Here's to all you Ladies!

Unlike my mother, I was raised when girls were told we could have it all. They left out the part about what having it all might cost, mind you, we just set out to do it. Come to find out, having it all is defined differently by each and every person asked to define it. So this issue is for any lady who toils to bring a dream to life, loses sleep to care for a sick child, or tries to walk that thin tightrope between home and work.

Our pages this month are power packed. We set out to profile our woman judges. But in fact, so many women are distinguishing themselves on the bench in Montgomery County we don’t have enough pages to feature them all in print. So we are extending our coverage to our website to ensure we can still bring you the stories of ladies in other professions that also deserve recognition.

This recognition includes two women ahead of their time blazing trials through Conroe and beyond since the early fifties to become legendary, each in her own right. And they are not done yet. Mary McCoy is now in the Guinness Book of World Records. She and Lyn Hawthorne Howard do it all with the poise and grace of a bygone age.

This month too, we share the story of a mother helping her daughter be a warrior against the unseen foe of chronic illness. Lupus is a terrible disease, not a war you want to fight alone. We also highlight example after example of ladies bringing their dreams to life. From designing Barndomeniums and jewelry to developing a winery, they won’t let anything get in their way.

Conroe City Lifestyle then draws attention to Notable Women in the community by asking them to share some advice learned from their own experiences. And since Conroe comes from rough and tumble roots, we thought it is only fitting to offer up a unique pair of Girls’ Night Out ideas that starts out being physical but ends on a softer note.

Happy reading, and to those to whom it applies, Happy Mother’s Day!

Mary McCoy in the Records Book!

A HOMETOWN TREASURE AND RADIO PIONEER ACHIEVES THE ULTIMATE RECOGNITION IN HER INDUSTRY.

What a delight to speak with Mary McCoy just after she took a call from London. Reporters in Canada and Australia have contacted her as well, all because of her record-setting career in radio.

No other woman has been in radio longer than Mary, and it’s earned her a spot in the Guinness World Book of Records—71 years and 357 days. On February 15, 2023, she was officially verified as “The World’s Longest Serving Female Radio Presenter/DJ.”

Mary gained acclaim as a singer, an on-air personality, and for remaining true to the music she loves. In 2010 she was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. In August 2021, Texas Monthly published “Mary McCoy Keeps Texas Country Radio’s Golden Age Alive.” She was surprised by a recent mention on Live! With Kelly.

“I was getting ready for work and overheard Kelly Ripa saying something about an 85-year-old lady who’s been in radio for over 71 years,” recalls Mary. ‘“Hey, that’s me!’ I told my daughter Kim.”

Mary takes the attention in stride and focuses on “The Larry and Mary Show” at K-Star Radio.

For 25 years, she’s featured country classics on weekdays from 10 am to noon and compares co-host Larry Galla to Elvis Presley due to their similar personalities.

“I knew Elvis when we were young and unknown,” says Mary. “He was the kindest, sweetest, most mannerly person, and we shared the stage on the Louisiana Hayride in 1955.”

Mary yodeled at age three, sang on stage at age six, and won her first talent contest at age 11. The following year she performed at a KMCO talent show and was asked to play guitar and sing during a 15-minute radio segment. Then she was offered her own DJ show at just 12 years old. Her first record, “Mary McCoy And The Cyclones—Deep Elem Blues,” debuted in 1965 and can be found on YouTube.

“Look real close at my mural on Main Street in downtown Conroe, and I’ll wink,” says our friendly, approachable hometown hero and radio pioneer.

ECHO HUTSON

COUNTY COURT OF LAW 4 CRIMINAL MISDEMEANORS/DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COURT

As an undergrad at the University of Alaska, Judge Hutson worked as a legal assistant at the U.S. Attorney’s office. “The Criminal Division Chief told me, ‘You were born to be a prosecutor. Go into criminal law,’” says Judge Hutson.

She worked with a joint-task force to solve a cold case later aired by Dateline NBC. “Community members at the funeral wanted closure, and that perspective changed everything for me,” says Judge Hutson. “I wanted to help those without a voice.”

She was hired by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office in early 2009. She became the Domestic Violence Chief and wrote a grant in 2011 to fund the county’s first dedicated domestic violence prosecutor.

Judge Hutson was sworn in as a judge on January 1, 2023. In 2022, Sam Houston State University published a study of Montgomery County’s specialized domestic violence Court, comparing it nationally and in Australia and the UK. The study concluded, “Montgomery County’s DV Court is one of the national high performers with a good success rate due to these efforts.”

PATTY MAGINNIS

435TH DISTRICT COURT, CRIMINAL/DRUG COURT

Growing up, Judge Maginnis had three career ideas: high school teacher, prosecutor, and veterinarian. She became a high school teacher at an American school in Mexico and then went to law school. She became a prosecutor in Montgomery County in 1997 and has five dogs, three chickens, and two cats— the closest she’ll come to becoming a veterinarian.

Judge Maginnis served fourteen years as a prosecutor and seven years as a defense attorney. In 2002, she prosecuted during the day and held municipal court at night, and knows most of her colleagues on the bench. “Many of us worked together on either side, and that’s the reason we work so well together in the judiciary.” But unlike the role of an attorney, she compares being a judge to a home plate umpire, watching the whole game unfold without the tunnel vision of a lawyer—impartial and unbiased.

“Our judicial system is about providing a fair venue for both parties,” says the judge. She sees people on their absolute worst days in Criminal and Drug Court and wants defendants to know they can walk into her courtroom and get a fair hearing.

As for handling the most difficult cases, “First responders, trauma surgeons, and perhaps criminal court judges learn to compartmentalize. A friend shared a little trick that helps. She takes off her lanyard and hangs it on a hook when she walks into her home. There it stays along with all the day’s activities so that she can happily interact with her family,” says the judge. KATHLEEN HAMILTON

359TH DISTRICT COURT CRIMINAL COURT/VETERANS COURT

Judge Hamilton was raised Catholic, loved the nuns who taught her and wanted to be one when she grew up. Instead, she got her M.A. in French and taught high school French. At the age of 32, she decided to go to law school.

As a law student at the UH Law Center, she was President of the Student Bar and edited the Law Center’s 16-page monthly newspaper while parenting her six-month-old and four-year-old and commuting from her home with her husband in Conroe to Houston. She interned at the Montgomery County Attorney’s office and was hired as soon as she graduated. She served ten years as a prosecutor and became First Assistant District Attorney. She then went to work as Managing Attorney for the Montgomery County Women’s Center for five years, focusing on protective orders and family law. She was elected judge in 2002.

Besides a full load of felony criminal cases, she presides over four specialty courts in the evenings. Her newest initiative came in 2015 with the Veteran’s Treatment Court. It is a 15-month program for veterans who have been charged with criminal offenses and have PTSD or Traumatic Brain Injury. She also presides over Adult DWI Court, Adult Drug Court, and Juvenile Drug Court. “The adult courts all begin in the evenings so that participants can keep their jobs during the day,” says the judge.

This is Judge Hamilton’s 21st year on the bench. In addition, she’s on the Board of the Conroe Symphony Orchestra, serving as President, on the Board of the Dispute Resolution Center, and on the Advisory Board of the Assistance League of Montgomery County. She is part of a team that teaches newly elected Texas judges each year in Austin.

KRISTIN BAYS 284TH DISTRICT COURT

Judge Bays earned a B.S. in English and Education from Baylor University in 1990 and completed a Juris Doctor (J.D.) at Baylor Law School in 1993. “I loved law school,” she says. “It was all about figuring out where the puzzle pieces fit. Learning the advanced rules and strategizing how to win was a lot like playing chess.”

She decided the next level of chess was becoming a judge after practicing law for 25 years, first with a law firm and then in private practice with her husband, Randy Bays, and also serving as president of the Montgomery County Bar Association.

“I’ve always wanted to be a judge, and I love what I do,” says Judge Bays. She presides over civil cases only. “When people sue each other, it presents a challenge. Attorneys and judges must know the law, be prepared for changes in direction, and expect surprises. The public is welcome to visit the court anytime and watch the proceedings. It’s a constitutional right and an open courts provision, so come see what’s happening.”

CLAUDIA LAIRD

COUNTY COURT OF LAW 1, PROBATE/GUARDIANSHIP

Judge Laird’s childhood dream was to attend the Air Force Academy and become a jet pilot. However, doctors and attorneys were revered in her small town, which influenced her to go into law. After 12 years on the bench, her motto is, “Work hard and never stop learning.”

Judge Laird’s court focuses on probate, guardianship, and mental health cases. “We are committed to checking in on our wards at least once a year, the majority of whom are disabled and/or vulnerable,” says Judge Laird. “We have a court investigator and also rely on community volunteers in our Adult Guardianship Assistant Program, who help immensely.”

The program is ahead of its time. The Governor may be signing legislation this month that statutorily mandates such a system. Judge Laird had the forethought to implement the reporting and accounting component before it was required. “This is kind of a new thing for our county and a good thing,” she says.

CONROE BUSINESSWOMAN PUSHES AHEAD WITH LUPUS

When Andrea James and her mother, Linda, were on a road trip traveling back from Canada, Andrea started to feel bad. She was experiencing various symptoms, from vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and mouth sores. She also had no appetite and was extremely tired.

Linda, a nurse by trade, knew Andrea needed medical attention, so she drove 15 hours straight to get home.

Within a week, her doctors had a diagnosis: Andrea had lupus, an autoimmune disease that attacks the body’s organs and tissues from the inside out. The condition is unpredictable, often misunderstood, and challenging to live with and treat.

Andrea’s lupus progressed quickly. Her doctors immediately prescribed steroids and a host of other medications to help control the symptoms. But her diagnosis wasn’t that simple and it required and still requires the support of the entire family.

Unfortunately, that is the case with most Lupus Warriors. Andrea had also developed lupus nephritis, which occurs when lupus autoantibodies affect structures in your kidneys that filter out waste. The condition can cause the kidneys to become inflamed and impair their function.

After learning she had lupus, Andrea knew she had a choice: to feel sorry for herself and be a victim of a cruel disease or learn to live with and enjoy life to the fullest.

Andrea chose the latter, despite having to live with many uncomfortable symptoms, including joint pain, anxiety, and an inability to handle the cold. According to Linda, Andrea “takes her meds and goes on.”

By all accounts, this is an accurate statement. The 25-yearold owns Weddings by Andrea in Conroe, a successful wedding planner business, and works at Bentwater Country Club as an event coordinator. This summer, she is walking down the aisle to marry the man of her dreams.

“She doesn’t complain and is a real trooper,” said Linda. “I’m extremely proud of her and how she has handled the diagnosis and managed the condition to the best of her ability. Some days she really surprises me with how resilient she is.”

Since her original diagnosis, she’s remained on every medicine prescribed except prednisone and now takes more. Once a year, she visits the nephrologist to check on her kidneys, and every six months, she sees the immunologist.

She and Linda have also gotten involved with the Lupus Foundation of America – Texas Lone Star Chapter and participated in several walks. They look forward to the day when they can help the Gulf Coast Chapter by coordinating a walk in The Woodlands/ Conroe area, so they can become more active in raising awareness.

LUPUS WARRIOR, ANDREA JAMES TAKES HER MEDS AND MOVES FORWARD

“I DO WHAT I CAN TO CARE FOR MYSELF AND LISTEN TO THE DOCTORS. I HAVEN’T LET LUPUS STAND IN THE WAY OF MY HOPES AND PLANS,” SAID ANDREA. SHE WENT ON TO EXPLAIN THAT SHE BECOMES SHY WHEN TALKING ABOUT HER LUPUS AND DOESN’T “WANT TO BE SEEN AS A VICTIM.”

“With lupus, there is always something – some strange ailment or symptom that comes along with the condition. We need to do more so that people know exactly what Lupus Warriors endure,” said Linda. “Andrea’s condition opened our eyes to the number of health disparities among people with lupus who are not as fortunate as she is to get the healthcare they deserve.”

Anne-Marie Blacketer, CEO of the Lupus Foundation of America – Texas Gulf Coast Chapter, could not agree more.

“With the support of the lupus community, including Lupus Warriors like Andrea, we can and will make a difference for people living with this devasting and life-changing disease. We encourage everyone to share the facts and information about lupus to help increase awareness so that one day we can find a cure,” she said.

May is Lupus Awareness Month. To learn more about the disease and how to get involved locally, visit the Chapter’s website at lupus.org/texasgulfcoast

“IN HINDSIGHT, ANDREA’S DIAGNOSIS MADE SENSE. EARLIER, SHE HAD DEVELOPED A BUTTERFLY RASH ACROSS HER FACE – A TELL-TALE SIGN OF LUPUS. EVEN SO, THE DIAGNOSIS TOOK US BY SURPRISE BECAUSE THERE IS NO KNOWN HISTORY OF THE DISEASE IN HER FAMILY,” SAID LINDA.

NOT YOUR ORDINARY GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT

WAX AND ROLL

If one more night at book club holds the same excitement as reading the phone book, it may be time to shake up your Girls’ Night Out plans. There’s no shortage of things to do in the Conroe area, but for a real change of pace and a night to remember, you’ve got to go all out!

No one understands that better than Michelle Nunez-Demet and her group of gal pals. Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, they get together at the Rainbow Roller Rink, tie on their skates, pad up, and become the Conroe Cutthroats Roller Derby Team. Teachers, nurses, artists, moms, and students, ages ranging from their twenties into their sixties, come to skate, laugh and cheer each other on. Considering that the goal is to be the toughest girls on wheels, they are the warmest, most welcoming, friendliest group of women you’ll find.

“Absolutely, bring your friends and come out,” encourages Michelle. “Don’t have friends? Make them here, friends that will last a lifetime. We’re all open arms.” She points out that you need no experience on skates. They embrace the wall-huggers, too. “Only do what you’re comfortable doing. We can teach it all to you,” she said. The team also loans any necessary gear to those who want to come and try it out.

The rink doors open at 6:30 pm, and practice runs from seven to nine pm. Some just come for the exercise and the friendship, choosing to be non-contact participants, and some have been skating together for over a decade. Only 15 make the roster for the monthly games during the season that runs from March through October, while others will act as non-skating officials. The team plays by Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rules against teams around Texas and the surrounding states.

“We’re a very competitive team, but we’re still here for fun,” said Michelle, who is called by her derby name, Taz (short for Taz Maimya), whenever she’s at the rink. “Anyone is welcome to just show up at practice by themselves or as a group but reach out to let us know to look for you and to make sure that practice isn’t canceled for an event at the rink.” They can be messaged through their Conroe Cutthroats Facebook page or their website ConroeRollerDerby.com

WICK AND WINE

After kicking off the skates, Kernita Heard, owner of Almost August in downtown Conroe, has everything you need to relax with friends and create your own perfect spa experience. Her Wick & Wine candle-making parties are pleasantly paired with a wine tasting for the escape every woman wants.

Curated at her elegant shop that opened last August, Kernita guides groups of ten or fewer through her fragrance menu to combine all the right notes for the perfect scent. After a container is chosen, all the candle elements are skillfully combined for each unique creation. “There are a few tricks of the trade, like how much fragrance for the wax, but I love sharing that and making it fun,” said Kernita, who started making candles and soaps at home as a hobby.

While the wax hardens, pre-selected wine flights and charcuterie await a short walk away in the Blue Room at BE Winery’s The Lounge on Main. Candles are then bagged to take home with a handwritten note. “It’s a different experience than just going out for drinks. At the end of the night, you have something special to keep,” she said. “And I like being able to partner with other local businesses.” She is also able to coordinate bigger groups at other downtown locations.

If your group would rather stay closer to home, Almost August can come to you. Kernita brings everything necessary to light up a shower, birthday, corporate event, or Girls’ Night In. “You provide your own wine, and my husband is there to pour and let you enjoy your time with your friends,” she said.

Later this year, Kernita’s Almost August plans to partner with her daughter Safiya St. Rose to add classes for potting decorative plants. For now, availability for her light-hearted, unrushed classes fills up quickly, and reservations can be made online at AlmostAugust.shop. However, a visit in person to browse her handcrafted soaps, scrubs, body butters, candles, and linen sprays is highly recommended.

So, the next time the girls decide to get together, throw the book out and think outside the box for a much more exciting group adventure with skates or wine & candles!

A CONROE TREASURE, LYN HAWTHORNEHOWARD

the very next flight, like getting back in the saddle after being thrown from a horse. Instead, I was given a week off, and still, to this day, I get white knuckles during any turbulence,” says Lyn. After she left flying, she became a sociologist for Gladewater ISD.

FIRST WOMAN EVER TO OWN A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP

Lyn’s first husband, orthodontist Dr. Terry Noble was tragically killed, leaving Lyn to support her three daughters, ages four, five, and seven years old. She founded LDS, a competitor of Southwestern Bell, and was instrumental in breaking up the monopoly, later selling to Metromedia.

Meeting with Lyn Noble Hawthorne-Howard is a study in style and grace. There’s a lot to admire about this groundbreaking 80-year-old businesswoman whose motto is “God’s not finished with me yet.”

Below are some fascinating backstories about this twice-widowed mover and shaker, married to Carl Howard since 2010.

KILGORE RANGERETTE

Lyn was a Neiman Marcus and Jantzen bathing suit model who opened up the Dallas Apparel Market in 1964 in a white mink bikini. While attending Kilgore College, Lyn performed with the first-ever collegiate drill team, the Kilgore Rangerettes, majoring in education and sociology. “You might think the expression ‘Beauty knows no pain’ comes from beauty pageants. No, it was coined by the Rangerettes,” says Lyn.

SOCIOLOGIST AND STEWARDESS

Imagine balancing two early careers, one in education and the other as a stewardess.

While a part-time stewardess for American Airlines, Lyn encountered a July 4th crash during a flight from Washington DC to Love Field. The windshield shattered and knocked out the radar in a brand-new 707. “The airline should have put me on

Lyn invested in the Toyota dealership in Conroe in 1972. Unaware of Japanese culture, being accepted as the first-ever woman-owned Toyota dealership was a battle. With Lyn’s persistence and a bit of friendly intervention by Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Noble Toyota of Conroe was founded.

HONORARY ADMIRAL OF THE TEXAS NAVY

In 1983, Governor Mark White slated Lyn for the Yellow Rose of Texas Award. Due to the spelling of her name—Lyn, not Lynn—she was added to the list for the Admiralty of the Texas Navy instead. And yes, she was commissioned by the Governor as an Admiral, an honorary designation.

AUCTIONEER

Lyn loved auctions, and after selling her car dealership, she kept the land and established Classic Consignment and Auction in 2005. She became a Texas state-licensed auctioneer and enjoys assisting nonprofits at events, including Young Texas Artists Music Competition and the Greater Conroe Arts Alliance.

BEAUTY QUEEN

After competing in pageants as a young woman and winning crowns in Louisiana, where her family lived, Lyn reentered the arena with the approval of her grandchildren. She was named Mrs. Louisiana United America Elite 2012 and Mrs. United America Elite after that.

VATICAN ART COLLECTOR

Lyn, a Methodist, owns the largest collection of Vatican mosaics in the United States, falling in love with the centuries-old technique after studying in Italy. At first glance, the mosaics appear as paintings and are brought to life at the Vatican Mosaic Studio, located down the hall from the Pope’s private residence. Lyn’s favorites depict religious figures and scenery, and her interest has gained her direct access to the Vatican.

ISAAC CONROE HOUSE

Carl and Lyn Howard purchased the 1885 City of Conroe founder Isaac Conroe’s home on Avenue A, finished renovations, and hosted the inaugural Founder’s Day event in 2018. Later that year, they sold the house to the City of Conroe.

AND MORE!

Lyn, a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas with a 50+ Year pin, is a generous philanthropist encouraging others to follow suit. She sits on numerous boards, once owned a local newspaper in Conroe, and is a licensed Realtor. Her adventures could fill a book!

Stacie Lynn “The Barndominium Lady”

Brownlee Jewelers

Philip and Gina Whitley moved to the small historic town of Montgomery, Texas, 29 years ago; where they raised four children and now have eight grandchildren. Completing her degree at Conrad N. Hilton College at the University of Houston, Gina specialized in wine and spirits management. She decided to combine her passion for wine and her experience in quality management and production to venture into the wonderful wine industry. This journey began with a vision and a 1/3-acre vineyard in her backyard.  It has grown into a partnership involving her sisters, and a move to a new location with more land to her accommodate her dream.

Self-taught Barndominium designer, Stacie Lynn, offers designs, construction tips, cost-saving hacks, and decorating ideas to help her clients with everything from land selection to floor plan design. Made of metal, Lynn has seen a large demand for barndominium homes across the country due to the open space, energy efficiency, and low maintenance. She likes to blend everyday comfort with a little bit of everyday pizzazz.
