As much as you may love your house at move-in, the reality is that it won’t stay perfect forever. But deciding whether to renovate or move to a new home is not always straightforward, especially because of the emotional component.
After all, it’s not easy to uproot your family from where close relationships with your neighbors and community have been forged or where family members are just a stone’s throw away.
So whether you want something more comfortable and livable or you need more space to accommodate an older parent moving in, you’ll need to determine what your long-term goals are and what your budget can support. Use the following tips to help you weigh all the factors associated with renovating and moving and, ultimately, make the best choice for you and your family.
If you’re considering a move, you’ll need to research whether home values are increasing or decreasing in both your current area and any areas you’re interested in relocating to. Knowing this information can help you decide what you can feasibly afford and whether it’s more cost-effective to renovate or sell. A real estate agent is a great resource to help you get the answers to these questions.
Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, but your decision will ultimately come down to your specific needs, finances, and desired lifestyle.
Why renovate? Renovating is a great option if it will allow you to reasonably accomplish your goals. Whether you want to add an extra bedroom or office to increase your home’s square footage, extend the size of your kitchen, or reconfigure the layout to create a more open floor plan, this may be the best way to get precisely what you want. Some of these projects can, of course, get a little pricey, but if you’re committed to staying in your home for the long term, it might very well be worth it for you to renovate.
Why relocate? There are several reasons why relocation may be a better option for you. For example, perhaps you want to increase the size of your current home but are unable to because of property-line limitations. The expected return on investment (ROI) of a renovation project may also not be as great as you initially thought, or your list of desired changes may cost more than buying a new home. Or maybe you simply want a bigger house with modern amenities situated on a larger plot of land. Whatever your motivation, moving can often be a simpler and more effective way to achieve your goals.
Both moving and relocating can be huge expenses, so you’ll need to look into all of the costs associated with each to determine which works best for your budget.
Construction expenses: Because the price tag of a renovation hinges on the size of the project, it’s important to consider the scope of work you want to have done. For example, do you want to remodel your home fully or just do a handful of minor repairs? Once you have your vision in mind, seek recommendations from friends or family for a top-notch general contractor who can help you determine if the renovation is affordable and cost-effective and whether you want to, or can, do any of it yourself to lower costs. But even if you can save on labor, you’ll still need to account for the cost of materials and equipment, such as lumber, roofing materials, paint, concrete, insulation, or machine rentals, that you or the contractor will need to complete the renovation.
Moving expenses: On top of the cost of purchasing your new home, you’ll have to factor in the price of moving, whether you’re tackling it yourself or hiring a moving company. This expense will depend on factors like the distance of your move, the size of your home (a two-bedroom will cost a fraction of a four-to-fivebedroom home to move), the weight of your belongings, and any specialized crates needed for artwork or other fragile items. And, of course, don’t forget about travel expenses to your new location.
operated.
In addition to the typical costs of renovating, there are ancillary costs that may pop up.
Permits and architectural plans: Depending on the type of renovation, you may need to hire an architect to plan the design. Also, any excavation, plumbing, electrical work, or structural alterations you want to make to your property will require you to apply and pay for the necessary permits through your local building and construction department.
Living accommodations: If your renovation is extensive, you may be displaced for some time; therefore, you’d need to find temporary housing while the work is being completed. While this situation may be unlikely, factoring it into your total costs will prevent it from becoming an unexpected expense.
There are plenty of reasons to renovate or relocate, including wanting a larger space or more modern amenities or being interested in a more prestigious neighborhood. Each option is likely to be quite expensive, so it’s essential to take the time to evaluate not only the financial aspect but also the lifestyle you desire and the social and emotional impact either decision will have on your family.

The cherished home of almost a million people—843,843 according to 2020 U.S. Census Data— Ventura County was inhabited by the Chumash people over 10,000 years ago. The state’s 26th largest (in area) county was established in 1873. In the 1500s, Spanish explorers arrived with active occupation beginning in the 1700s. Mission San Buenaventura was founded in 1782, spurring population growth in the surrounding area. Acres of land were given out to Mexican Californians, Californios, as payment for their service and to encourage land settlement. In the 1830s and 40s, these ranchos raised cattle and increased agriculture interest in what is now Ventura County.
The 150 days of celebrating Ventura County’s 150th anniversary include the following events:
The exhibit opened in Ventura and moved to Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza in September, where it will be displayed through the fall.
Curated by Focus on the Masters, 150 artists’ portraits will be on display, along with a select number of artworks by FOTM-documented master artists. The exhibit will include an extensive

“We
our clients’ homes to look elegant, timeless and beautiful and speak quality.”
Style is more than a “look.” It’s a deep understanding of one’s own unique likes and dislikes, needs and preferences, blended with the aesthetics of form and function.
For some, style is developed by environment and experiences. The way we interpret style comes down to our desire for authentic connections with the spaces we’re in and the experiences clients have with the product. From the sleek profile of a designer roller shade to the soft folds of a vignette roman shade; the ability to morph and shape a room with light and shadow is exclusive to each person.
Skyline designers help bring style to clients’ homes by working with them to say “I love the organic look of a woven shade, but I need room darkening function. How can I achieve both?” It can definitely be overwhelming to choose window coverings even if you’re 100% dialed in on what your personal taste is. Having that professional next to you who can point out subtle differences in fabric drape, finishes and use cases is one of the best ways to get exactly what you need out of your shades.
Recently, we’ve seen homeowners trending toward the pillars of contemporary design. This directly translates to how they bring window treatments into their spaces. When we work with clients, we help bridge the gap between what the vision for the space is and how shades, blinds, or drapery fit into that narrative. Each designer brings with them a very strong understanding of industry style along with the product knowledge to make clients feel comfortable with their choices.
Creating an oasis with color, hidden detailing, and a strong bend towards functional design is what we strive for each time we’re working with a client. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned veteran years into your style journey, the ability to craft a compelling storyline in a space and infuse it with your own personality is something we love seeing come together. Skyline Window Coverings’ collaborative window treatment showroom located in the heart of Westlake Village is designed to provide the most innovative features, fabrics and operating systems from Hunter Douglas. Offering the full collection of Hunter Douglas shades, shutters, blinds and draperies, Skyline Window Coverings is “an experience center—a place for clients to feel inspired, to envision custom window treatments in their own homes.” Showcasing today’s most popular features, the showroom provides a hands-on approach to choosing custom window treatments. See and touch the fabrics and experience each and every type of operating system. The showroom includes Smart Shades, intentionally placed so you can play with all of the innovative features and gadgets offered with today’s automated shades.
“Creating an oasis with color, hidden detailing, and a strong bend towards functional design is what we strive for each time we’re working with a client.”

No longer can a living area or space be considered “in style” based solely on luxury or price. Style is subjective and defined by an individual’s experience. An individual’s style is something that simply makes one feel warmth and comfort.

Their direct relationship with product manufacturers allows WDC to be well-informed of all the latest styles, trends and product features available in the kitchen and bath industry—not just styles and features of today, but those that will be available in years to come. WDC’s five interactive showrooms are frequently updated using current fashion trends and styles designed by local artisans and interior designers. When customers walk through the kitchenettes and bathroom vignettes, they view the products in a lifestyle setting, which inevitably sparks their own creativity. SMILE is short for Small Incision Lenticular Extraction. SMILE Laser eye surgery is a game changer in laser vision correction. Dr. Khanna is experienced in the use of the only FDA approved laser for SMILE, Visumax. Dr. Khanna is experienced in the use of this laser to carve a sliver of tissue in 30 seconds within the cornea. Cornea trained surgeon Dr.Khanna, skillfully and painlessly removes this thin tissue through a small opening. The recovery is quick with patients returning to work and sports in a day or two. The absence of the cornea flap causes less dry eye. Flapless also makes it safer, as there is less chance of the flap getting displaced. Therefore, even people who could not have Lasik, like surfers or those engaged in contact sports can SMILE.
Lasik has a flap which can get displaced or allow debris, cells or bugs to creep in. There is no flap in SMILE making it safer.
The healing in PRK is slow and painful while that in SMILE is painless and fast.
Only highly competent Lasik eye surgeons, like Rajesh Khanna, MD who are certified by Zeiss can perform SMILE laser eye surgery.
Khanna Vision Institutes has an advanced diagnostic machine to detect the shape and curvature of your cornea and eye. Dr. Khanna uses this information to decide if he will do SMILE surgery for you. Therefore, he offers a free consult to find out if you are a candidate for this latest procedure.

Attendees of all ages admiringly looked on in awe as she entered the foyer at the City of Malibu Art Gallery. Exuding her ageless, ethereal beauty, Malibuite Jane Seymour smiled broadly and shared vignettes about her storied career, her love of the sea and her works of art recently showcased at the gallery.
Aptly titled “Expressions,” the exhibit featured her fine art open heart bronze sculptures—the signature symbol of the charity she co-founded, Open Hearts Foundation—that warmly embraced the space, as well as her colorful watercolors and warm oil paintings that evoke the delicate sensitivity of impressionists Mary Cassatt and Claude Monet.
Seymour’s artwork captures simple scenes— one of a small child holding a red bucket on a
beach, entranced by and enamored with ocean waves, another of a lady bedecked in a red gown and matching hat immersed in a garden, her flowing garments fluttering in the breeze. The pieces masterfully capture fleeting scenes, celebrating nature’s purity.
Seymour’s art gallery in Westlake Village, Coral Canyon Publishing & Gallery, is open to the public by appointment and displays her permanent oeuvre, as well as fascinating memorabilia and ephemera from her many movie and television roles.
There, one can appreciate Seymour’s introspection—her intricate floral images that explore the delicate anatomy of a flower—as well as her perspectives of everyday, fleeting occurrences that deftly delve
JANE SEYMOUR’S LEGACY OF LOVE, EMBRACING CHANGE AND OPTIMISMbeyond the patina seen in an initial glance. Not to be missed is her Circus Suite, a delightful series of original watercolors, celebrating the muscular ballet of trapeze artists, the colorful and daunting feats of a fire eater and the commanding authority of the ringmaster. A viewer feels drawn into the circus, mesmerized by its enchanting magic.
There is, as her fans know, a depth to Seymour that is as enchanting and intriguing as her many roles throughout the years. A tour of the gallery is delightful and includes a rare sight. When a viewer looks at one particular painting, she leans in and looks more closely, eyes wide and wondering, “Is that really Jane Seymour depicted in the Norvegienne Boat at Giverny? Is that really her on the famous bridge in the Claude Monet garden?”
Yes, confirms Susan Nagy Luks, Seymour’s longtime gallery director and curator, that is, indeed, her sitting in the famous boat.
“She was able to briefly sit in the boat and to paint in the garden and the lily pond,” shares Nagy Luks.
A multiple Emmy and Golden Globe-winning television and film star and recipient of the Officer of the British Empire (OBE), bestowed upon her by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace for her services to drama, Seymour is most known as the mysterious Solitaire starring alongside Roger Moore in the James Bond movie, “Live and Let Die” (1973); as the star of the 1990s American television series, “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and its telefilm sequels; and as a beguiling seductress in “Wedding Crashers.” Both on and off screen, she is a master of many skills, most notably her ability to constantly change in response to her life’s varied vicissitudes. Seymour has also received many accolades for live theater appearances.
In 1980, she played the role on stage of Constanze in Peter Shaffer’s play, “Amadeus,” which ran on Broadway for 1,181 performances and won five Tony Awards. That same year, returning to film, she played a young theater actress—Elise McKenna—in the period romance, “Somewhere in
Time,” an experience that marked the start of her friendship with co-star Christopher Reeve. She’s even played Marie Antoinette in “La Revolution Française,” filmed in both French and English, and she is fluent in French.
Origins
Seymour’s path to fame started humbly. She and her sisters grew up in a loving, yet simple family in Middlesex, England. Her mother, Mieke, was a Dutch-born protestant and a Japanese concentration camp prisoner of war in Indonesia during WWII. Her father, John Benjamin Frankenberg, an obstetrician, was an English Jew whose family was from Poland.
Seymour has, in a phrase, charted her own path, deftly maneuvering past any obstacles and outmaneuvering twists of fate. For 5 decades, she has worked assiduously at all of her many, multifaceted endeavors. When young, she aspired to be a professional dancer and trained at the Arts Educational School in Tring, Hertfordshire, London. She dreamed of appearing in Russia’s renowned Kirov Ballet. However, she only appeared there once. Unfortunately, she sustained a serious knee injury in that performance. She had to adjust to the fact that a career in dancing was not in her future.
So, as she would so many more times in life, the undaunted Seymour pivoted. Born Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg in Wimbledon, when she was 17, the star assumed the name of Jane Seymour, also the name of King Henry VIII’s third wife who, like the actress, stands out amongst her colleagues for her bright personality and ingenuity.
Seymour is generally known for her long, brown hair. However, when one looks closely, they’ll see that her left eye is emerald green, but her right eye is brown, a condition known as heterochromia. She once told a journalist that English filmmakers found that presentation to be “off-putting,” and that early in her film career she was fired because her eyes were different colors.
“Through remarkable changes, life inevitably becomes remarkable.”
Although that rejection was difficult to accept, remaining positive and moving forward as she always does, Seymour kept both eyes on the ball. She later commented, “That taught me that when life deals major blows and you think they’re impossible to overcome, like the loss of someone, a death or dealing with a medical issue, out of it, comes a gift.” One of the several books she’s penned, appropriately entitled, Remarkable Changes, shares one of the primary mottos describing Seymour’s outlook on life: “Through remarkable changes, life inevitably becomes remarkable.”
That approach to change has carried Seymour through the ebbs and tides of vying for and winning roles in movies and television shows, through four marriages, divorces and her devoted mothering of her four children, including twin boys she had later in life, in addition to two stepchildren whom she considers her own. In
addition to being an attentive, loving mother—and now, a doting grandmother to three children—Seymour is a serial entrepreneur. She is well known for her wearable art clothing line and is a self-described “scarf-aholic” and “textile-aholic,” creating gorgeous scarves through her company JS Designs depicting stunning, brilliant colors that her fans lovingly collect, as well as for her home collection line, and a production company. She is a prominent spokesperson for Crepe Erase, one of the leading Guthy-Renker brands in the skincare space.
Always sanguine, often when facing very difficult circumstances, Seymour is intuitive, imaginative and innovative. “In life, when stuff happens, the instinct is to close off your heart,” Seymour says in one of her books discussing her Open Hearts Jewelry Collection. “By leaving your heart open, it leaves room for someone else to come in.”
“By
In Remarkable Changes, she discusses the true value of life transitions, from marriage and divorce to career changes to milestones in the lives of one’s parents and children. She posits that whether we initiate the change in our life, or it is thrust upon us by circumstances beyond our control, we should stop “dealing” with change, but instead actively incorporate it into our lives by employing the hard-won wisdom gained through such experiences.
An avid traveler, Seymour often posts messages such as “reveling in the serenity of Iceland’s pristine beauty, where the blue skies meet the crystal clear embrace of nature’s reflection—let’s spread some positivity!” Whether zip lining in Costa Rica or immersing herself in rugged Ireland, Seymour is, at heart, an adventurer, curious about what life will offer next.
Sporting a beautiful swimsuit and sans makeup, the ever-youthful Seymour recently posted, “The warmth of summer’s arrival is like a gentle breeze whispering hope into our souls, reminding us that amidst life’s uncertainties, there’s always room for joy.”
She’s also very philanthropic. In 2010, she co-founded the Open Hearts Foundation, a charity that empowers small and emerging nonprofits through its grantmaking and volunteerism programs. Today, more than 60 charities across the United States and hundreds of volunteers across the world are a part of the Open Hearts
Movement and everyone is welcome. The Foundation recently hosted a 2-day Gala celebration in Malibu, raising a significant amount of donations that are immediately being put to work in the Foundation’s latest grant cycle. Seymour continues to serve by volunteering on the Foundation’s board and remains one of its largest benefactors.
Her advice to others? “Love yourself unconditionally, let go of judgment toward yourself and others and shine brightly—you will inevitably inspire others to do the same.”
For her part, Seymour is always reviewing scripts and assuming new roles. Seymour stars as Dublin-based retired literature professor Harriet "Harry" Wild who stumbles into a second act as a private investigator solving crimes with her literary expertise and young, streetwise sidekick much to the consternation of her son, a detective in the Dublin police. The series, which is filmed on location in Ireland and airs in numerous countries around the world, returns for its second season on Acorn TV in the fall of 2023. Look for her in 2024 in Netflix’s rom com, “Irish Wish,” where she plays Lindsey Lohan’s mother in the film.
“It’s a love letter to Ireland,” Producer Michael Damian says. “It’s a ‘be careful what you wish for’ story. Sometimes, you may not get what you want, but you get what you need.”
And, with her heart always, always open, Seymour continues to embrace change.

On Flag Day, June 10, an enthusiastic gathering of caring and patriotic Americans honored our flag as it should be correctly honored at A Salute to Our Troops event at Janss Mall. As stated by the group's founder, Linda Patterson, their mission is to raise the morale of our troops as high as the clouds. By sending packages to our troops and increasing community awareness of the positive effect these packages have on our warriors, it creates a bond of Americans supporting Americans.
Guests were also treated to an inspiring speech by Captain Charles Plumb, U.S. Navy Retired. On his 75th mission, just five days before the end of his tour, Plumb was shot down over Hanoi, taken prisoner, tortured and spent the next 2,103 days in North Vietnamese Prisoner of War camps. He was also a contemporary of Senator John McCain as a Prisoner of War. He now lectures on lessons learned from that experience.

Italia in 2012 with her husband, Fabio. “Italy is known around the world as the creator of the most sophisticated, most elegant and most colorful style—it’s all about beauty. We buy topof-the-line quality hides and work with Italian designers on the style—my husband is very, very picky and so nothing comes to the showroom unless it is beautiful and comfortable!”
Fabio’s passion for fine Italian leather stems from his roots growing up in Arzignano (Vicenza), Italy, a town known for producing the world’s finest authentic leather products and where his father owned a tannery. Drawing on their extensive experience in the leather industry and custom interior design, Yana and Fabio take pride in offering luxurious, stylish and comfortable home furnishings at affordable prices.

Supported in part by Keystone Sponsors City National Bank and HOPE (Housing Opportunities for People Everywhere), the Museum of Ventura County provided the perfect backdrop for this year’s 2023 Compassion Campaign theme, "HOME MADE: Fund It + Build It + Live It," which featured three museum-quality exhibits that immersed guests into a learning experience, which highlighted through sight and sound what it takes to fund, build, and live in safe, equitable, and affordable homes in Ventura County.
The evening was emceed by David Kohlmeier, president and chair of the Board of RAIN Communities, who shared his powerful story of finding himself and his then 5-year-old son homeless, even as he had a paying job. Now a proud homeowner, Kohlmeier credits organizations like RAIN and Housing Trust Fund VC for giving people like him and John a supportive hand up so that they can contribute to the collective prosperity of our community.
As the owners of The Sofa Guy, Paul and Holly Trent have made it their mission to provide a long-lasting, extraordinary experience for clients in a warm, friendly and knowledgeable environment.
“We started the family owned business with custom sofas and have evolved into a local interior design team helping our clients furnish their entire home—or homes, in some cases,” says Paul, whose business has been established for 2 decades in Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village.
“TSG Interior Design has taken off for us,” he emphasizes. “Why? People need somewhere to go for help, and one thing I hear over and over again is how very comfortable and relaxed clients feel the moment they walk into our showroom.”
Located at 2520 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., “our space is filled with beautiful pieces from all our vendors, as well as our own custom upholstery.” In this space, “we are passionate about serving, helping and solving problems. We have been doing it for 20 years with upholstery, so why not do it with all aspects of the home?”
Paul notes that “everybody uses the internet—it’s a great tool.”
Nevertheless, “we wanted to create an environment where people can go to actually touch the furniture…or have someone take the time to explain the ins and outs of all the options available. And have fun doing it.”
Take rugs for example.
“You may see the image online, but you can’t touch and feel it,” he says. “At our showroom we have over 500 samples of rugs for our clients to actually see and feel—and even borrow and bring in your home.”
One of the most popular services Paul offers is the old-fashioned house call.
“This service guarantees that any piece we make will actually fit the space,” Paul explains. “It also helps coordinate colors, gives us an understanding of our clients’ personal style and often leads to helping our clients complete the design of their space with rugs, coffee or end tables, lamps, artwork…which we offer through our TSG Interior Design program.”
Flashback to 1996 when the Trents opened their first furniture store with a business partner in Venice Beach called Philip Paul Designs. From the original store in Venice Beach, they changed their name to Welcome Home Interiors.
“When we described what we do, people would say, ‘Oh the Sofa Guy!’” Holly recalls. “Paul got that so often we finally gave
in. We figured it’s simple, memorable and a little goofy; but then again, so is Paul. We embraced the moniker and today we are The Sofa Guy Inc.”
The couple moved their business to Thousand Oaks in 2003.
“I actually started out of my garage,” Paul remembers. “I would go to clients’ homes with fabrics and pictures, have my guys build the pieces and then personally delivered them in my pick-up truck.”
Throughout Paul’s business career, he has been inspired to elevate the purchasing experience of his clients.
“It has never been enough to design, build and create great home furnishings—I want to make sure the whole experience is blissful,” he says.
Above all, “I passionately believe in grace.”
“I believe, in these times, especially in the retail world, we crave authentic opportunities or moments to relate kindly with each other, to be considerate, thoughtful and helpful. To be human. I don’t want to be sold to, or to have to fill out a form, become a member, join some club or click on this to get to that— only to have to return it because of some glitch.”
The Sofa Guy is located at 2520 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd in Thousand Oaks. For more information, call 805.497.5217, email info@thesofaguy.com or visit TheSofaGuy.com.

Catherine Tirr’s affinity for art began in her early childhood.
“I’ve been painting all my life,” says Catherine, a Topanga Canyon resident of 28 years. “My father was a painter. He used to give me scraps from his studio to play with as a child. I’ve always been dabbling in something visual.”
Despite her father’s warnings about the challenges of pursuing art as a career, Catherine attended art school, eventually going on to attend Chelsea College of Art and Design in London to obtain a master’s degree in printmaking.
“He knew how hard it is, but I couldn’t help myself,” shares Catherine. Today, a celebrated painter herself, Catherine passes on her love of art as a teacher at Santa Monica City College and Pierce College, teaching classes in plein air drawing, acrylics, printmaking and studio watercolor.
“I really enjoy the social aspect of it; a studio practice is quite isolating, so it’s a nice balance. What I really enjoy about teaching is the enthusiasm of the students. All the classes I teach are in the adult programs, my students all really want to be there and are eager to learn—it’s not about credits,” says Catherine. “As a teacher, you always benefit from what the students bring. It’s a very happy environment, very conducive to relaxation and enjoyment. The plein air classes I find especially meditative.”
Much of Catherine’s own work as an artist is plein air painting centered around capturing the essence of the Malibu landscape and other picturesque areas across California, from Big Sur to Joshua Tree.
“I think the seascapes, the landscapes and the desert-scapes are all fascinating,” says Catherine. “I love going to places that are exceptionally beautiful. In my work, I’m not representing, not rendering, but absorbing how I feel about my surroundings; that's why they're somewhat abstract.”
Some of Catherine’s favorite locations to paint in Malibu include Zuma Beach and Point Dume.
“Point Dume is one of my favorites. I must have made at least 25 paintings there,” says Catherine with a laugh.
In addition to teaching college classes, Catherine also conducts private plein air workshops, bringing students along to paint on location. The most recent trip was to Big Sur and Carmel.
“The workshops are something I find very fulfilling. We’re fully immersed in the place. I find it very rewarding to teach on location. There is something about this full immersion, that is like jumping into a whole new language,” Catherine says.
She advises those interested in painting to sharpen their foundational skills, and above all, to be persistent.
“I would advise taking some drawing classes first. I think it's important to have some drawing experience; it's too daunting otherwise,” Catherine explains. “If there's a will, there's a way. It's not the skill of the man, it's the will of the man, or woman. The great thing about the adult programs at Santa Monica College and at Pierce College is that the classes are totally free, so there’s no reason not to pursue that passion.”
Catherine’s work is currently on view at Coast Gallery Big Sur and at Dacha in Manhattan Beach.
Learn more about Catherine at CatherineTirr.com or email catherinetirrstudio@gmail.com for more information.
Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be. “We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life.
Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type?
