Keeping It In The Family
In just about every aspect of our lives, we see that change is inevitable. The business world is no exception. Employers hope that the good ones stick around forever, but the reality is that people come and go through our lives. The best we can all do is try to create a healthy work environment, and enjoy the time we have working with them.
We have had the absolute pleasure of working with Kailey Beuerlein for the last two years as our Editorial Director. Kailey recently was hired account executive at a production agency in Chicago and we know she is going to accomplish great things! As we prepared to fill Kailey’s role, we didn’t have to look far. We are thrilled to announce that Kelsey Huffer, who has been a key part of our creative team for the last eight years, has accepted the role of Editorial & Creative Director. Not only is Kelsey an accomplished photographer, but she has an amazing eye for layouts and unique story ideas. Her kindness lights up the room and nothing has her frazzled, even when the publisher turns in these welcome letters so close to the deadline that there isn’t a minute to spare!
Kelsey was recently recognized at the City Lifestyle Annual Conference for the “Best Cover” award, out of 190 magazines in our company. While much of Kelsey’s work with us is behind the scenes, we want to make sure she is recognized for her incredible talent and professionalism. We couldn’t do it without her!
We hope you enjoy the work Kelsey and our team put into this beautiful, May issue.

INNOVATIVE SCULPTOR
KEVIN BOX'S PROFOUND
PARTNERSHIP WITH BOULDER'S SMITHKLEIN GALLERY
ARTICLE BY TONY FIRESTINEPHOTOGRAPHY BY BOX STUDIO
With its rich history, diverse array of contemporary works and unwavering commitment to fostering artistic dialogue, SmithKlein Gallery on Pearl Street stands as a cornerstone of Boulder's artistic landscape. As the gallery celebrates its tenth year under its current ownership and looks forward to commemorating 40 years in Boulder, the partnership with sculptor Kevin Box stands as proof of their enduring devotion to promoting artistic innovation, meaningful relationships and community engagement.
Starting with a fascination with Kevin Box’s unique approach to translating works of origami to sculpture, SmithKlein Gallery saw in him not only an exceptional artist but also a kindred spirit in their dedication to creating important alliances within the artistic community. Nathan and Ann Klein, SmithKlein Gallery’s owners, maintain a philosophy of nurturing essential relations with the artists they represent. "I recall seeing his work up at Loveland and being very intrigued with the idea of making bronze, steel, and aluminum look like paper," reminisces Nathan. This initial intrigue blossomed into a profound partnership and friendship, as they invested in Kevin’s work and embarked on collaborative ventures that transcended mere business transactions. "What we look for is not only talented artists but artists that we have a really strong connection with,” underscores Nathan. “Ultimately, in our business, these artists become our dear friends. They become like family." It is through these deep-rooted connections and collaborative efforts that SmithKlein Gallery continues to thrive as a guidepost of creativity in the Boulder art scene.
Kevin Box explains the evolution of his artistic vision and the techniques he employs in his sculptures as an intentional design approach. "I definitely approached my work early on with a design/graphic problem-solving mind," says Kevin. “My uncle had a graphic design company that I interned at for a number of summers, and he introduced me to team problem-solving—attacking a visual communications problem with a group of designers… When seeking my creative voice as an artist I approached it in a similar way, trying different aesthetic approaches to tell similar stories, until I found the strongest one—the one you see now.” With collaboration lying at the heart of Kevin's artistic process, he goes on to explain that his art is a team effort from start to finish. "When I first pioneered the technique of casting paper
into bronze," Kevin explains, "I was really pleased with my results... I also saw my own limitations and realized I wasn’t going to become an origami master overnight." Embracing this association, Box reached out to origami masters like Robert Lang and Beth Johnson among others, initiating partnerships that have yielded stunning works of art over the years.
ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN, the monumental outdoor sculpture exhibition, stands at the forefront of Kevin's artistic repertoire, a testament to his collaborative spirit and innovative vision. Inspired by his wife Jennifer's dance education background, Kevin and Jennifer sought to expand beyond traditional gallery spaces, envisioning a
traveling exhibition designed for botanical gardens to reach a broader audience. This ambitious endeavor, which showcases larger works not intended for sale, has graced over 20 botanical gardens across North America, inviting viewers to explore themes of transformation and interconnectedness through the beauty of origami. Coordinating such a vast exhibition poses logistical and creative challenges, yet for Kevin and Jennifer, the collective rewards outweigh the difficulties. With meticulous planning and hands-on installation, each step underscores the importance of teamwork and shared vision. Transforming origami into durable metal sculptures fit for outdoor display requires a delicate balance of artistry and craftsmanship, a challenge that Kevin embraces passionately.
As Kevin Box’s work continues to captivate audiences across the country, he remains committed to spreading his message through his art. "You will see that peace is a common and repeated theme,” Kevin reflects. He goes on to explain the significance and importance behind the “unfolded” works that he creates to show alongside the “folded” sculptures, describing that he always requests two models from the origami artists that he works with “to reveal the sublime and mystical beauty discovered only by deconstructing the work.” Kevin explains further, “The complexity and beauty we see on the outside is eclipsed by what is found in
the invisible realm of the inside. In life and origami. The mandalas, stars and otherwise spiritual imagery found in the unfolded origami is the most profound imagery to me. It more accurately represents the beauty found hidden within each of us and everything in this mystery of life we share."
From his early days as a graphic designer to his current status as a renowned sculptor, Kevin Box's journey has been marked by a relentless pursuit of artistic excellence and pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic mediums. Through his innovative approach and his unwavering commitment to collaboration, Kevin continues to inspire audiences with his captivating creations, inviting viewers to explore the boundless possibilities of artistic expression. In describing his wishes for the viewers of his work, Kevin states, “We hope it’s beautiful to begin with, interesting to learn about along the way and inspiring in the end.”
Experience Kevin Box’s work at SmithKlein Gallery in Boulder. For more information visit SmithKlein.com
Kevin and Jennifer Box’s ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN book release will be held at SmithKlein Gallery in Boulder on May 25, and the ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN exhibition will be held at The Gardens on Spring Creek in Fort Collins from June 1 –November 3. Carley’s Compassion
The Legacy of Carley’s Closet & The Rutledge Cancer Foundation
ARTICLE BY KAILEY BEUERLEIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY POPPY & CO. BY KELSEY HUFFERThe news traveled fast. 15-yearold Carley Rutledge had stage IV Ewing sarcoma, an aggressive bone and tissue cancer.
How could they have missed it, coming from a family of doctors? Carley was a healthy, happy, soccer-loving teenager with what doctors thought was a sports injury. She was prescribed multiple rounds of physical therapy, a lift in her shoe and medication, but nothing seemed to help—her pain would not go away. Almost a year after her first doctor visit, a family member suggested an MRI, where Carley’s cancer was discovered. By then, it had advanced to stage IV and she was given a less than 20% chance of survival.
The Rutledge family and their friends soon learned that this devastating path to diagnosis was all too common. For the 89,500 teens, adolescents, and young adults (AYAs) who are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. each year, this is a familiar chain of events. Oftentimes no one, not even doctors, suspects cancer—and that’s exactly why the Rutledge Cancer Foundation (RCF) was founded in 2011.
When Carley’s friends and family learned that teens and young adults had the lowest survival rates among all cancer groups, they decided to create change for Carley and the others who fight cancer at such a pivotal time in life. Early detection of cancer in all ages is crucial, but especially in children, teens and young adults. When cancer is caught in the early stages, survival and longterm health are achievable. RCF is proud to be the
first organization in Texas to recognize and assist the AYA cancer population, and now they’re coming to Colorado.
Carley called Colorado her home after spending six years at the University of Colorado Boulder, getting an undergrad and master's degree, before moving to work in Denver. She loved everything about Colorado and Denver; her job, her friends and especially the parks; she and her beloved dog, Juno, were regulars at Sloan’s Lake, Cheesman and City Park, most likely training for her next half marathon. Friends and family share stories of the light that Carley held, lighting up themselves when they talk about her. To the residents of Cherry Creek and Denver, Rutledge Cancer Foundation’s mission is personal: easing cancer’s impact, raising survival rates and finding a cure for teens and young adults with cancer.
RCF supporters, friends and family are a Charity Partner at the Denver Colfax Marathon, their 2024 goal being to raise enough donations to fund the opening of the first Carley’s Closet at the Colorado Children’s Hospital. Born from Carley’s enthusiasm and passion for making the lives of other young cancer patients better, the Carley’s Closet program aims to provide new diagnosis resources and comfort items for teens and young adult cancer patients. “No one should fight cancer alone,” says Laura Rutledge, executive director of RCF, and Carley’s mom. “Especially a teen or young adult.”
Carley’s Closet focuses on the AYA cancer population (ages 11-39) and Pediatric Sarcoma families in both children’s and adult medical centers. The new diagnosis bags for patients include important resources and care items that help them navigate their cancer journey. They also include items like beanies, games, headphones, Bluetooth speakers, journals, gift cards and other age-appropriate items. Soft blankets, coloring books and other items make their stay in the hospital as comfortable and home-like as possible. In ten Texas Medical Centers and soon to be in Denver, Carley’s Closet is a unique program that helps young patients know, and hopefully feel, that they are not alone.
Abby Anderson, an inpatient occupational therapist at Children's Hospital Colorado and a close friend of Carley, saw how Carley's story impacted other young cancer patients without her ever even meeting them.
"Not only was Carley a close personal friend, but I was able to use her story to inspire the oncology patients I work with on a regular basis," says Abby. "Without having ever met Carley, one
For over 13 years, RCF has served young cancer patients and their family members through Carley’s Closet's new diagnosis bags, RCF patient outings, oncofertility preservation programs, therapeutic exercise and most importantly, research for more effective, less toxic therapies that allow young patients to live longer, healthier lives after cancer. Since 2011, RCF has served over 15,700 AYA cancer patients and their family members and has donated over $1,700,000 to pediatric cancer research.
“Because of RCF’s generous donors, more and more of our children and young adults will have a healthier future,” says Laura.

young patient was so moved by her story that she felt compelled to create something for Carley; a beautiful necklace made from assorted beads to represent Carley’s interests and life journey… threaded together as a symbol of solidarity. This patient, amid her own cancer journey, gained a sense of hope and connection through Carley. In stringing together symbols of Carley, I was able to ground into my own grief, seeing yet another way that Carley, in who she was and how she lived, impacted someone for the better."
Tragically, Carley died from her cancer in 2021 at age 27, from relapsing after eight years of being cancer-free and waiting to join a promising clinical trial. Carley’s legacy is felt every day through her friends and family’s efforts to increase awareness and cancer survival for the vulnerable AYA patient population. Beyond that, Carley’s passion for life and the people she experienced it with is a testament to the miracle of the human spirit - something that continues to leave us all in awe.
Join the Rutledge Cancer Foundation in Denver on May 18-19 and Raise The Survival Rate for teens and young adults with cancer at the Colfax Marathon & Races. Rutledge Cancer Foundation is proud to be returning for a 3rd year as a participating charity. Once registered, become a sponsor or make a donation to help support RCF’s mission.

A Day Out with Mom, Mile High Style
Stephanie Kelley has lived in the Denver area for over 30 years. She is a wife, mom-of-three and self-proclaimed coffee connoisseur, with an immense love for meeting and connecting with people. Stephanie is a social media strategist and content creator, and she created Hi from Denver in 2023 as a way to feature all of her favorite places in the Mile High City.
This year on May 12, we’ll be celebrating our moms and maternal figures for Mother’s Day. I have been a mom for 21 years, and since my kids are now in their 20s and teens, Mother’s Day looks quite different from when they were younger. We’re able to get out of the house and hit the town, without having to worry about nap times, eating schedules and the occasional tantrum. As a person who values quality time over gifts, my ideal Mother’s Day looks like getting to spend time with my family, and also being able to visit a few of my favorite Denver places. I’ve compiled a list of Mother’s Day ideas that can be easily customized to fit the interests of the mom that you’re celebrating, and they can also be easily done with or without your kiddos in tow.
Hi From Denver's Stephanie Kelley Shares Top Picks for a Memorable Mother's Day
ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE KELLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY POPPY & CO. BY KELSEY HUFFER1/ Hearth
I’m a firm believer that the best way to start any day is with a good cup of coffee. One of my favorite coffee spots in Denver is Hearth Coffee and Bakery located in RINO. This corner shop serves up quality coffee and tea drinks along with drool-worthy pastries, made in-house. My go-to order at Hearth is an oat milk latte and one of their raspberry white chocolate scones.
2/ Petals and Pages
After coffee, head over to one of my favorite bookstores in Denver. Petals and Pages is not only a bookstore, but also a flower shop and community space. They also sell beautiful home decor items and delicious treats. It’s the perfect spot to browse books and purchase a bouquet of flowers, and you’re even encouraged to stay awhile and do some reading if the mood hits you.
3/ Leven Deli
When your stomach starts growling, head over to Leven Deli in Golden Triangle. Leven not only offers fantastic food and drinks, but the space is an absolute stunner with tall, open ceilings and an abundance of beautiful plants. Don’t skip their famous pastrami Reuben on freshly baked rye bread.
4/ La Lovely Vintage
After lunch, enjoy a long walk on Broadway, and stop into the shops to browse vintage, books and vinyl. I always pop into La Lovely Vintage when I’m in the area. They have a great selection of women’s and men’s clothing and a huge denim section. You’ll also find plants, candles, jewelry, metaphysical supplies and other unique items.
by Poppy & Co. by Kelsey Huffer5/ Ti Cafe
To wrap up the day, you might be craving a sweet treat, or an afternoon pick-me-up, so I highly suggest heading into Ti Cafe. This Vietnamese coffee shop features delicious drinks like Vietnamese Egg Coffee, Pandan Matcha Latte and Salted Caramel Espresso Kem. Be sure to grab a Taro Mooncake or Red Bean Sesame Ball to pair with your drink.

Jim FranciscanParticular Tile
A product that tells a story while making a positive impact? We’re sold.
Founded by Christopher Caskey, a climate scientist with a Ph.D. who transitioned into entrepreneurship, Particular Tile was born from the hunt to solve a local problem on Colorado’s western slope. Aside from their extensive and impressive sustainability practices, their tiles are also exclusive to the owner—made by hand, and completely one of a kind.
Chris grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona, where his parents taught him and his siblings a love for the outdoors and to care for the environment. “One time my brothers and I found an abandoned mine with an old mine cart on the tracks,” says Chris, which, you'll see shortly, is a bit of foreshadowing. “They hopped in the cart, and I pushed them down the tracks in the darkness. But only a short distance, because we knew how that ends in the movies.”
Particular Tile creates handmade terracotta tiles out of red clay, unique to the American West. And their products pay homage to just that: the American West. Everything the Particular Tile team does is authentic to true Western
ideals and lifestyle, from their unique upbringings to the reason why they do what they do.
The day-to-day team consists of Chris, founder; Nancy Ihlenfeldt, director of brand, sales and marketing; Nina Steigele, director of operations; Holly Williamson, project director and Montrose local Jordan Lobush working as production specialist. These people are literally bringing in the mud from outside of your house and making it into something extraordinary. “And it does not get more Western than that,” says Nancy Ihlenfedlt.
“It’s cliché, but when you live here and you see the red mountains, and you see Red Rocks, you see how tactile it is. That’s
where our designs come from. It’s authentic and as pure as it gets,” says Nancy.
The creation process is no easy feat. With nine steps, which I’m sure have been whittled down to be more digestible to us laypeople, we start with step one: mud collection. By collecting mud that is clogging their local reservoir, Paonia, their team excavates truckloads of mud to create a little more space in the reservoir for water storage. In turn, this water is used by farms, ranches and vineyards in need of irrigation. But not just anyone can go around digging up mud; Particular Tile has collaborated with a number of stakeholders for permits and permissions, including the Bureau of Reclamation, Fire Mountain
Canal and Reservoir Company, Army Corps of Engineers and Gunnison County.
After step one, is naturally, step two: clay preparation, followed by clay extrusion, and tile cutting and shaping (steps four & five), kiln firing, glazing and then a little more kiln firing. The finished product is beautiful, colorful, intentional and again, one of a kind. Their products serve a purpose. Nancy shares that people are often awestruck by the finished product, musing how it feels like it was made just for them. “That’s because it was— handmade, just for you,” Nancy says.
In addition to their clay work, Particular Tile is also in the process of planning their own methane—a dangerous greenhouse
gas—capture facility, captured from abandoned coal mines near the reservoir (foreshadowing!). Engaged in a number of coal mine methane capture projects, Chris and his wife Holly now live in Paonia, where they just purchased a coal mine that they estimate leaks over 750 tons of methane per year. By purchasing this coal mine, they’ll capture this methane and use it not only as a heat source for their kilns but to eventually power their facility as a whole.
Their sustainability efforts are just the cherry on top of their extraordinary and special creations. It’s evident that people are drawn to Particular Tile because it not only is handmade, but it looks handmade. Not one tile is the same, and two tiles that undergo the exact same process can come out looking different. “It has all the hallmarks of a handmade product,” says Nancy. “Variation, in color, depth and warmth.” Each tile is particularly unique. Get it? And although they have a large array of shapes, they’re happy to custom design pretty much any other shape you can imagine. They’re original works of art.
Beyond creating beautiful, artisan and long-lasting products, Particular Tile strives to be an example to others in that manufacturing. “We’re trying to show other manufacturers that it’s possible to be a for-profit business that can not only cause less harm but one that can actually reverse an issue,” says Nancy. “We want to show that you can solve a problem by creating a product. Less harm is good, but solving a problem is better.”

A REALM OF POSSIBILITY
ARTICLE BY LINDEN BUTRYMFrom Intimate Gatherings to Larger Events, This Denver Venue Offers a Perfect Canvas for an Elevated Experience
Nestled within York Street Yards just south of I-70, Realm is a hybrid photography studio and event space where any vision can come to life. Co-founded by EB Combs, Jonathan Combs and Rachel Nichols and designed with versatility in mind, the venue offers the 1,600-square-foot Open Space, 700-square-foot Sun Room and 190-squarefoot Loft furnished with mid-century modern furniture and décor brimming with crisp daylight. Book the Open Space for a more intimate event, or book the full venue for all of Realm’s indoor and outdoor spaces—it all depends on your event needs.
As more brides and mothers-to-be look for a place where they can host expertly curated bridal or baby showers and receive superior service, Realm is establishing itself as a go-to venue. Clients are coming to us for more elevated showers,” EB says, “and there are so many fun ways to leverage this space and play it up.” Here, EB shares what makes Realm special, how clients can make the space their own and why showers are an essential part of life’s celebrations.
YOUR VISION FOR REALM
warehouse. We were able to build out our section of the building entirely how we wanted. It has clean lines, lovely neutrals and really great natural light everywhere. When you walk through the doors, Realm allows you to feel like you’ve arrived somewhere entirely different.
Before we opened in 2019, Jonathan, Rachel and I noticed that many venues in town weren’t accessible to creatives. We come from a background in design and photography and wanted to create a place that serves as both a photography studio and a beautiful event space. We are part of a larger complex that was a World War II military medical
BENEFITS OF HOSTING A BRIDAL OR BABY SHOWER AT REALM, INSTEAD OF AT HOME
Getting out of your home makes it much easier. Our staff handles the cleaning, so you’re not spending time sweeping and wiping down tables. Realm makes people feel comfortable; it has that living room aesthetic. And scale is really important. Our clients can host a custom shower event for up to 50 in the Open Space or up to 130 with the full venue. The space lends itself to curiosity, imagination and play, which really supports the festivities of showers.
CREATIVELY CUSTOMIZING AN EVENT
Jade did a butterfly release on the patio, which was really sweet. Sydney had real tattoos at her wedding shower. Balloon installations are a popular trend, and we’ve also seen coffee carts and bounce houses. Our moveable walls can create different vignettes within the area. It’s very fun, playful and energetic. Realm leans towards the unexpected and allows people the ability to do something true to them. Our hope is that our clients never feel like they have to fit in a box.
REALM
“From the moment you first tour the venue to the day of your event, we maintain high standards to deliver an experience with human solutions.”
VENDOR FLEXIBILITY
Our clients can work with any food vendor they’d like for delivery. For catering that operates on-site, we have a stacked vendor list to choose from. Live music and DJs are welcome; from spinning vinyl to live quartets, we’ve seen quite a variety come through our doors. Clients have the ability to source their alcohol from wherever they please—it just needs to be served by an insured bar service.
HOW YOU ELEVATE A CLIENT’S EXPERIENCE
Our space is well-maintained and cared for. From the moment you first tour the venue to the day of your event, we maintain high standards to deliver an experience with human solutions. We want to support our clients throughout pre-production. During all events, we always have a venue manager on-site for support as it’s needed.
REDEFINING THE IMPORTANCE OF SHOWER CELEBRATIONS
It’s so special to have a space where you can take beautiful photos with your people–especially with the generational component of events like these. Moments shared with those we love are so important to capture because life, after all, is fleeting. Baby and wedding showers are such important moments to be celebrated. I think what stands out about the events we’ve seen take place at Realm are the hosts who dream up something that is true to them. Everyone’s take is wholly their own. Realm is simply there, waiting to be reimagined.
