Happy May!
All things seem possible in May. The world’s favorite season is spring; with the re-emergence of bright colors and the Colorado sunshine feeling stronger day by day, I can’t help but feel inspired and excited. I think spring gives us all the opportunity to take a step back and reconnect with ourselves, and allows us to move into the warmer months feeling refreshed. "May, more than any other month of the year, wants us to feel most alive.” — Fennel Hudson, A Meaningful Life . I’d say Fennel is onto something with that, and it's best we take his word for it.
With all the warmth and joy that the month brings us physically, we feel it’s also important to highlight all the fabulous and strong and irreplaceable women in our lives that make us feel the way spring does, but internally. Of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… but it’s not just the biological mothers we celebrate, rather the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring their love into our lives—making themselves unforgettable.
Let’s join together to celebrate all of the special women in our community that make it what it is. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers—both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way. And they’re so easy to adore.
May the warm things ahead fill you with joy!

IN DENVER, THREE CERAMISTS, EACH WITH THEIR OWN UNIQUE APPROACH, PROVE MAGIC HAPPENS WHEN A MAKER FINDS THEIR MEDIUM
ARTICLE BY KATHERINE OWENconnected to each piece and have greater control over creating more organic shapes. I often use coil-building techniques to make larger and more substantial forms which allows each piece to be slightly different and unique.”
Adriann’s work also frequently incorporates other natural elements, like horsehair or leather, and she says she aspires to incorporate metal and wood into her sculptural work in the future.
“I’m always looking to expand my skills in any medium and have dabbled in wood, metal smithing, fiber and charcoal,” she explains. “I never want to restrict myself to one medium or be constrained by materials, which is why I love mixed media and combining materials together in an interesting way.”

Adriann Leigh
Adriann Leigh originally went back to school with the intention to study interior design. Then, she found ceramic arts. “Ceramics acted as a physical outlet away from computer design where I could work with my hands,” she says. “I ended up enjoying this more than interior design and shifted my focus to ceramic arts and sculpture.”
Working with her hands has become a key theme in her work, which primarily utilizes the hand-building method: “I want my work to have the appearance of something made by human hands with small variations that show the mark of the artist,” she explains. “… Hand building makes for a slower production process, giving me time to get intimately
Natalie Legg
Artist Natalie Legg knows a thing or two (thousand) about mugs. “I used to thrift obsessively back when I lived in Chicago, and I would always buy vintage mugs or just odd unique mugs,” she recounts. “So I guess you could say I have quite a collection. Not sure exactly what my fascination is with them but even after creating probably over 2,000 of them, I could still come up with a different version.”
A quick glance at Natalie’s line, Void Form Ceramics, proves it. Inspired by everything from “nature to mid-century design to plain, child-like exploration,” Natalie’s work showcases a cleanlined, minimalist yet natural aesthetic.
“I want the clay body itself to be seen on all my work, so you are reminded that it did come from the earth,” explains Natalie. “And the glazes I typically use are all neutral or earth toned so they can blend into any environment and are reminiscent of a landscape.”
Made in her home studio, her work—largely taking the form of funky but highly functional mugs—go on to be a part of everyday life for customers.
“That is my intention for making mugs,” she explains. “I want it to be your go-to mug everyday. I want it to be a part of someone's daily routine. Something they want to have out on their desk, coffee table or counter almost as a statement piece or a piece of art, not to be hidden away in a cabinet.”

Kim found ceramics while pursuing a degree in graphic design, and has honed her skills for nearly two decades in studios everywhere from Denver to Southern California to Japan. Now, inspiration can come from anywhere: “It could be as simple as laying in bed staring at my wall, collecting rocks, working in the studio or looking at shadows.” Her work also includes other forms, like mugs, bowls, teapots… “pretty much anything functional for your home,” she says. “I just love making anything that people can use in their daily lives.
“I see homes as personal art galleries,” she continues, “so I’m honored and super grateful when someone chooses to bring my work into their space.”

“Wedge, weigh, make, trim, attach, refine, dry, bisque fire, wax, glaze, glaze fire, sand, clean, write notes, pack and finally ship. Phew! Done—then repeat.” That’s artist Kim Hau’s process, or the short form of it at least. But what her systematic process belies is Kim’s unique perspective—and products.
Take a glance at Kim’s Etsy shop (KimHauCeramics), and you’ll see one distinct design steals the show—a soap dish that’s both attractive and innovative, designed to drain right back into the sink.
“Lately the soap/sponge dish has been my bread-and-butter,” Kim explains. “It blew up a while back when someone from GQ ordered a dish and loved it so much that they invited me to be included in an article; the same happened with Buzzfeed.”
These Three Brunches Are Perfect for Mom on Her Day—And Any Other Weekend of the Year
Out To Brunch
Denver is very much a brunch town. We love ourselves some piles of pancakes, ladles of Hollandaise and mimosas that just won’t quit. Permissive and indulgent, brunch is a sovereign meal unlike any other. So what better time to celebrate mom than at brunch o’clock?
Whether it’s Mother’s Day or an ordinary, non-matriarch-focused Saturday or Sunday, these three woman-owned restaurants guarantee you the brunch you want—nay, the brunch you deserve. Here’s where to treat mom and yourself for the meal that’s so good, it straddles the a.m. and the p.m.
Bistro Vendôme
ARTICLE BY ALLYSON REEDYWhen Bistro Vendôme announced it was leaving its longtime home in Larimer Square after nearly two decades, people were understandably panicked. Would they forever lose their favorite omelet and fresh-baked pastries? But after saying a brief au revoir at New Year’s Day brunch,
Bistro reopened in Park Hill in February, debuting a fresh menu and a fresh look.
Chef/owner Jennifer Jasinski and Executive Chef Jeremy Wolgamott created new items for brunch, like the pillowy souffle pancakes with blackberry syrup and creamy lobster bisque—all best washed down with a white cranberry or blood orange mimosa. Moody velvet banquettes, stenciled floors and stunning, drop-your-lemon-crêpe-worthy wallpaper, add to the wow factor and have devoted customers cheersing to another 20 years.

The Bindery
Beautifully melding both style and substance, The Bindery is a decidedly chic LoHi brunch destination whose food might taste even better than it looks. (And it all looks pretty darn amazing.) Like the hybrid market/ restaurants popular in Europe that the restaurant is modeled after, The Bindery combines creative, fine dining dishes with a grab-and-go style bakery that you’ll want to make repeat trips back to. Meaning you have to somehow make your way past the mouthwatering cinnamon rolls and
chocolate croissants in the pastry case if you want to linger over duck confit hash and vanilla bean and rum Dutch babies.
A mom herself, Chef/Owner Linda Hampsten Fox drew inspiration for The Bindery from her daughter Emma, even naming a brunch dish after her. La Emmabella is a nod to one of Emma’s favorite childhood dishes—because yes, this child liked quail eggs in brioche with truffle butter at age six. “I named that dish after her when we opened and she had just left for college,” Linda says. “That way I could hear her name all weekend long—it’s my love letter to her.”

Le French
When a Michelin-starred baker moves to Denver and opens a Parisian-style bakery and bistro, people take note. And take note they have of Le French, the Belleview Station restaurant from Senegalese French sisters Aminata and Rougui Dia, which has been charming south Denver brunchers since it opened in 2019.
With loads of brunch offerings on the menu—we’re talking everything from crêpe Suzette with citrus marmalade and mascarpone Chantilly cream to classic steak and eggs with bearnaise aioli and peppercorn sauce to a roasted pork belly benedict in brioche—it’s
impossible to leave here hungry. But save room for (or take home) one of the deliciously flakey croissants, gorgeous macarons or mini tarts—or better yet; all of the above.

RESIDENTIAL
HOW LUXURY, MODERNITY AND CONVENIENCE COMBINE IN DENVER’S STUNNING NORTH POINTE TEN
ARTICLE BY LISA VAN HORNE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY NORTH POINTE TENART
Cherry Creek North is Denver’s most preeminent residential neighborhood, at least in the opinion of Liv Sotheby’s brokers Deviree Vallejo, Liz Richards and Josh Behr, who are selling the prestigious North Pointe Ten residences.
“Cherry Creek North is special because it has such close proximity to hundreds of the city’s finest boutiques, restaurants, fitness options, art galleries and more,” says Deviree. “There is no other location in Denver with this abundance of retail right out your front door. It is also very exciting right now with its renewed business and energy, which has boomed since the challenges of the pandemic.”
CONTINUED >
Nestled in this sublime Denver locale is North Pointe Ten, a stunning residential oasis that embodies the contemporary glamor and natural connections that are synonymous with luxury living in the Mile High City.
“North Pointe Ten was built with extraordinary features that set it apart from others,” says Liz. “It’s a vision that’s unique to Cherry Creek and to Denver as a whole.”
The genesis for the North Pointe Ten development was in 2018 when the availability of a large vacant lot in Cherry Creek North was brought to the attention of Michael Fancher, CEO of Iconic Investments. Along with capital partner Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic fame, the pair set out to bring their vision of, as Michael puts it, “a residential development designed as a work of art” to life.
“This was originally inspired by European row homes and villages,” says Michael. “We wanted this to look like a collection of homes that have evolved over time and relate to one another rather than being exact copies.”
The award-winning Alvarez Morris Architecture Studio was brought on for the project’s design. It’s a firm that was uniquely matched to this distinct vision. As Michael notes, the firm’s prowess includes the team’s ability to create timeless design through a modern lens and incorporate modernity harmoniously with organic materials—all of which spoke to the vision for the development.
The result is an immaculate set of urban residences—ten paired homes that are comprised of a set of key design elements yet distinguished and unique as well. Each home has a luminous main floor open layout that facilitates seamless flow. A guest suite, entertainment area and wet bar make up the units’ finished basements. Meanwhile, the third floor boasts a bedroom and indoor/outdoor living area that opens to an expansive rooftop deck ideal for relaxation, entertaining and enjoying the inimitable Rocky Mountain and Pikes Peak views.
This connection to the outdoors is embodied throughout the homes’ designs, as floorto-ceiling walls allow for unobstructed views and invite in abundant sunlight. Large bi-fold doors on the main level—connecting to the patio and courtyard—and third floor help residents naturally maximize the volume of their living spaces.
Effortless luxury is the foundation of North Pointe Ten in both its design and convenient amenities. Exquisite considerations and finishes imbue elegance throughout, from the immaculate kitchen to the spacious primary suite and marble-laden primary bathroom. Meanwhile, advanced smart home technologies and an a la carte menu of home services from Align Lifestyle Management—which includes dog walking, flower delivery, gardening and more—make the development ideal for people seeking lower maintenance living.
“These homes allow for a true lock-and-leave lifestyle and appeal to a wide variety of city dwellers,” says Deviree. “This is especially helpful for snowbird buyers and travelers with multiple homes.”
Even with their elevated luxury and openness to their natural surroundings, the homes of North Pointe Ten still retain a cozy, private quality. The welcoming front brick entries include two modern gasfired lanterns or torches ready to greet occupants and usher them into their abode.
In North Pointe Ten, what began as a purposeful, artful vision has been translated into a one-of-a-kind Denver living opportunity. For more information, reach out to Deviree, Liz or Josh, or visit NorthPointeTen.com.
“CHERRY CREEK NORTH IS SPECIAL BECAUSE IT HAS SUCH CLOSE PROXIMITY TO HUNDREDS OF THE CITY’S FINEST BOUTIQUES, RESTAURANTS, FITNESS OPTIONS, ART GALLERIES AND MORE.”

Topher Straus Talks About His Painting Process, Where He Finds Inspiration and Expanding Into Galleries
ARTICLE BY JESSICA MORDACQ PHOTOGRAPHY BY POPPY & CO. BY KELSEY HUFFERASK THE EXPERT
Topher Straus paints iconic landscapes in a bold and colorful way, beginning with reference photos, often taken from personal outdoor experiences. Topher isolates the best colors in these images with a stylus and uses contour lines to describe the horizontal, diagonal or vertical quality of a landscape.
When the painting is completed, Topher prints it on special paper with dye, then transfers it onto a large aluminum sheet. The result is a luminous image that allows light to reflect through to the base metal. Finishing two pieces of artwork a month, Topher has over 100 of his paintings on his website and displays dozens in Colorado galleries.
Before becoming a professional painter in Genesee, Colorado, you had a film career in New Zealand. Why’d you decide to move back where you grew up and dedicate yourself to your art?
I wanted to raise my son, Oliver Viking, CEO of my company, in the place I grew up and really adore. I’ve lived all over the world—New Zealand, London, L.A., New York—and everywhere I went, I carried a Colorado flag with me, dreaming of moving back when I’m successful. But it took me moving back here to find my success.
What’s Oliver's role as CEO?
He’s the catalyst for me sharing my art. For 30 years, while I was making video games and directing films, I was secretly producing art. It took me going through a divorce and my son saying, “Papa, it’s time for you to share your work” for me to decide to open up.
He gives me amazing feedback, through the eyes of a child and the pure essence of what’s important. My work is really free, and he helps keep it free. His desk is right beside my desk, so he does his homework while I’m painting. His easel for his art is right beside my easel. We’re two peas in a pod.
He also helps out with social media: My Instagram account @CreativeTopher has over 100,000 followers. And I’ve got a team of people helping me out, so I’m able to focus solely on my art. All I do all day is paint happy little trees; it’s awesome.
Besides landscapes, where else do you find inspiration?
In addition to my ever-growing National Park series, which is more than halfway done, and painting Colorado ski areas, I find inspiration in everyday details of life. There is beauty in everything, and it’s all about the perspective in which we see it and appreciate it.
Last year, Breckenridge Gallery put about 15 of your works alone in a separate permanent gallery space. How has reception been and what’s on your horizon?
It’s been amazing to have my own gallery space. There’s been explosive growth. In Colorado, I now have my work in Aspen Art Gallery, Topher Straus Gallery by Breckenridge Gallery, R Gallery Art Bar in Boulder, Slate Gray Gallery in Telluride, Uptripping in Winter Park, Vail International Gallery and Meyer Gallery in Park City, Utah. I have a bunch of skithemed paintings coming soon.
In my wildest dreams, I could have never imagined that things would have turned out this way. With that comes the responsibility to give back to my community. I’ve raised $75,000 in the last three years for various charities and organizations throughout Colorado. I’m always open to collaborating with nonprofits and helping out my community.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

FINDING HEALTH AND VITALITY IN THE THIRD ACT
The focus on women’s health is often centered around birth control, fertility and pre/post-partum care—all vitally important to provide and protect. However, we have been overlooking a large portion of women searching for insight and treatment for peri and postmenopausal symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disturbances, anxiety, mood swings and brain fog, among others.
There has been a recent uptick in information and conversation around this formerly taboo phase of women’s lives, as Susan Dominus of the New York Times discussed in one of her recent articles, hormone therapy, popular in the 90s fell into ill repute based on a single imperfect study, leaving many women hesitant to try this type of treatment or even to discuss it with their doctors. To be clear, there can be risks associated with HRT (hormone replacement therapy) but the fact that so little research has been done and so many women are suffering, highlights, as professor Rebecca Thurston said in the aforementioned article, that “we have a high cultural tolerance for women’s suffering, it’s not regarded as important.”
It is time to change that.
Actress Naomi Watts, who recently founded a femme-centric wellness line
called Stripes, says she created it because “women deserve support, solutions and the space to figure it all out. Because while menopause may be part of midlife, midlife is a lot more than just menopause.” Many other brands are following suit with products designed to meet women where they are and boost energy, confidence, health and libido, like Pause, Tabu, local favorite LarkLove, Kindra, and Joi, a digital health clinic for women, which offers personalized prescriptions.
Just like any other type of health care, it can be harrowing to decide what kind of treatment is right for you.
Of course, speaking with your regular healthcare provider is a good place to start but if that conversation doesn’t provide you with the breadth or depth of information you are wanting there are many additional local avenues available.
Carrie Ballas at Boulder Integrative Health offers functional medicine solutions for hormone imbalance, sleep disorders and other associated symptoms that focus on your biochemical individuality to create tailor-made solutions.
Karen Kaufman at Kaufman Health and Hormone Center has a passion for providing personalized and comprehensive care to her patients using a combination
of conventional medicine and her functional medicine training. She is a fount of knowledge, and often uses a combination of hormone replacement and supplements to find balance for her patients.
Acupuncture and nutrition are also super helpful tools to have in your kit. Cameron Delaney at Solstice Health is a gifted healer that specializes in women’s health at all stages of life. Julie Pelaez and her partner, Jo Schaalman, are guides to eating cleaner and the founders of the Conscious Cleanse, which is good at any age—but can be particularly helpful for boosting energy if you are feeling depleted.
Some women breeze through menopause and their normal routine is enough to keep things on track but many, many others need guidance, information and a wide array of treatments to feel like their best selves in this transitionary time. As singer and philosopher Erykah Badu, 51, posted on her Instagram, “I miss the thought of lil babies in my belly and periods and womb stuff like that, BUT I AM NOW ABLE TO SHARE MY WISDOM AND JOYFULLY GROW INTO THE GLITTER DRIPPING PHOENIX CREATED THRU FIRE.”

DECORATED MILITARY DOCTOR BRINGS
BOTH FACIAL RECONSTRUCTION AND COSMETIC SURGERY TO LOCAL EYE PRACTICE
ARTICLE BY SONJA NIX PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDEDMore Than Skin Deep
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and Dr. Whitney Pafford believes the beholder looks back at you in the mirror.
Dr. Pafford’s unique set of skills as a Head and Neck Surgeon, medical residencies and fellowships, and combat field experience make her perfectly positioned to lead the new Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery department at Colorado Eye Consultants. Some might find it an unusual pairing, facial plastics at a medical eye practice, but Dr. Pafford believes it to be a great fit.
“It’s not common to have a Facial Plastic Surgeon in an Ophthalmology group but it is truly a brilliant collaboration,” Dr. Pafford says. “I think people still get a little confused that I’m a Facial Plastic Surgeon with a Head and Neck-ENT background
“This job is an incredibly unique opportunity to develop and grow your own practice within an already thriving group.”
and not an Oculoplastic Surgeon with an Ophthalmology background. There’s some overlap, but they are entirely different training pathways and different fields. I feel very fortunate to have found and been chosen for this unique and amazing opportunity.”
Dr. Pafford knew she wanted to practice medicine as a child. Following in her parent’s footsteps, she pursued junior ROTC in high school. Awarded both a full Navy and full Air Force scholarship before graduation, she accepted the Air Force scholarship at her dad’s alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, continuing in ROTC. As an undergraduate during 9/11 and the pursuant Afghan war, the war-zone injury stories she heard piqued her interest in facial reconstruction. Service people’s stories, such as that of JR Martinez, who was seriously hurt by an IED, and Kyle Carpenter, who protected his fellow Marines by shielding them. There is the story of Bibi Aisha, a local Afghan woman whose Taliban-supporting husband attacked her and left her to die. She managed to escape to an American military hospital in Afghanistan and was taken back to the states for reconstructive surgery on her face.
“These are the stories that made me so proud to have chosen the path of military medicine and the types of surgical cases I wanted to be a part of,” Dr. Pafford says.
Her focus on facial trauma began during her NYU-Bellevue Hospital residency and primarily consisted of treating prison fight wounds or pedestrians struck by traffic. Only a yearand-a-half out of her residency, she deployed to Afghanistan to treat combat injuries. Vastly different types of injuries than those she had treated stateside, they leave soft tissue defects and secondary thermal injuries as well as delayed healing and higher risks of infection.
“I learned two of the most important lessons in my medical career. One, when you are the only option, you learn to step past your comfort zone. You can accomplish anything in your scope of practice with a strong knowledge of anatomy and appropriate preparation and, two, the importance and value of mentorship past my residency years.”
Speaking about her new role at Colorado Eye Consultants, Dr. Pafford says, “This job is an incredibly unique opportunity to develop and grow your own practice within an already thriving group. The practice is amazingly run, supportive, and I love the camaraderie. The practice and the people that work there are really why I chose this position and to move to Colorado.”
