Welcome to the Ladies Issue!
This is one of our favorite issues each year and for good reason. It’s a celebration of the women who are the heartbeat of our community—those who lead with strength, create with passion, inspire with action, and love with unmatched ferocity.
Personally, when I think about the most important women in my life, many come to mind, but one woman stands above the rest—my Mom.
Thank you Mom for all you did, and still continue to do for me. Your unconditional love and support have always allowed me to know that I am braver than I believe, I am stronger than I think, and I am smarter than I know.
As you flip through these pages, you’ll meet women who are trailblazers in their industries, mentors in their communities, and caregivers in their families. You’ll read about their dreams, their challenges, their victories, and the quiet moments in between. Each of their stories is a powerful reminder that there’s no one way to be a woman—and that every journey is worth honoring.
In Chattanooga, we are lucky to be surrounded by so many incredible women— from business owners and educators to artists, athletes, and advocates. They make our city vibrant, innovative, and inclusive. Their leadership, courage, and resilience continue to move us forward, and this issue is dedicated to them.
This month, we’re excited to bring you our annual "Local Women You Should Know" feature, spotlighting six remarkable women in our community: Julie Edwards, Olivia Reeves, June Scobee Rodgers, LaShon Carter, Kristen Davis, and Misty Bolt. In our "Local Eats" segment, we take a trip to Spice Trail and dive into owner Sujata Sighn’s passion for her craft. We also explore Acceptance Alchemy, the business of Mirilena Lee, which focuses on empowering women. Amy Clinton and Ashley Clinton, the dynamic mother-daughter duo behind Tennessee Awning Company, share their story. We also gain valuable insights into women's health in a conversation with Dr. Erin Westner of The Pelvic Method. Finally, we explore Erlanger’s plastics and reconstructive offerings.
While we celebrate public achievements, we also want to honor the often unseen and unspoken work that women do every day—holding families together, lifting others up, and showing up for their communities without expecting recognition.
Cheers!

As the producer and host of Local 3 Plus You, Julie Edwards welcomes members of the community daily and helps share their stories and passions with the people of Chattanooga.
“As a teenager, I remember wishing I could have a job where I could just host people. At the time, I had no idea what that even meant, but here I am and that’s what I do… host people every day,” she shares. “I really enjoy that I never have a bad day. I talk with probably 10 guests each morning and I’m met with smiling faces every day. I hope I give the smile back.”
As a mom of two daughters, Julie shares the same advice with them that she shares with others. “Look for
the positive in situations, learn to listen to your gut, and don’t be afraid to live your life in your own way,” says Julie. “Also, be patient and know that a little step that seems like a little step can become a series of little steps that become a great, big one at the end.”
Julie also loves spending time outdoors and during covid when she felt stuck inside, sought out the Ooltewah Nursery as an outlet for working outdoors. She still spends a few hours there each week and declares, “I’m happiest when I’ve got a little dirt under my fingernails.”
Join Julie daily on News Channel 3 at 11:00am and follow her on Facebook @Local3PlusYou . CONTINUED >
As a teacher, author, and speaker, June Scobee Rodgers inspires others to aim high, keep learning, and pursue the next adventure. “There is no one on this earth created as uniquely as you are, so use those skills and talents that God has given you to be yourself,” she encourages. “And accept your problems as challenges. If you run across a problem, think of it as a challenge and go with it.”
June’s advice reflects how she has lived her life. As the widow of Challenger Space Shuttle Commander Dick Scobee, June set about sharing the legacy and passions shared by Challenger’s crew members through establishing the Challenger Center and many related hands-on educational programs.
“The families of the Challenger crew joined me and we poured out our hearts for wanting to make a difference for children who are still waiting for their lessons from space,” shares June. “We wanted people to remember how they lived, not just how they died, and the mission of the Challenger Center shows them that they can fly a mission, just like my husband did.”
June later married Lt. Gen. Don Rodgers and it was his encouragement that led her to write books and continue to champion various learning opportunities for children. “I have loved all the opportunities that I’ve been given, and I have been very loved by two wonderful husbands, my children, and grandchildren,” she shares. “I’ve truly loved this life.”

Over the last year, Olivia Reeves accomplished several impressive milestones. Not only did she graduate from University of Tennessee Chattanooga with her undergraduate degree in Sociology, but she also brought home a gold medal from the 2024 Olympic games in women’s weightlifting.
From a young age, Olivia’s parents encouraged her to participate in extracurricular activities and sports. She enjoyed being active at her mom’s CrossFit gym, but when Olivia discovered
strength training, she realized that it appealed to her in a way other sports and workout routines did not.
“I decided to start weightlifting in September of 2015, and in less than a year I stopped doing CrossFit and decided that this is my sport. Ten years later, it ended up being the right one,” shares Olivia. “I absolutely love the sport and how it makes me feel. I love the idea of being strong and having that autonomy and capability be a part of my identity.”
Being part of the weightlifting community has allowed Olivia to see the benefits that go beyond what most people see on the surface, and she encourages others to give it a try. “Strength is a thing that should be part of everybody’s life, regardless of age or gender. It’s a valuable skill and builds character,” she says. “It’s also a really great skill to have and a base for any sport because being strong also builds speed, and those two together can make a really good athlete.”
As the owner and director of Tiny Tigers Learning Center, LaShon Carter works to change the narrative that childcare simply serves as a babysitting service. She is on a mission to provide a safe, positive, and education-focused environment for children ages birth to 5 years old while also equipping their families with essential skills and resources.
“I don’t just educate the students, I educate the teachers and parents,” she shares. “I host classes and seminars, not just furthering the staff’s trainingbecause we have training mandated by the state of Tennessee - but also include parents on some of this training.” Topics for seminars include first aid/CPR, budgeting, and information LaShon gleans from Child Development Associates and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. She also runs the EDU Station, a school supply store that provides affordable educational resources for families who want to help their children excel academically.
LaShon’s faith, positive outlook on life, and sense of humor help her easily relate to children, staff, and parents. She also shares that having a support network to provide mentorship and learning opportunities has been invaluable in her career. “I encourage women to build a community of mentors through places like the Urban League and the Chattanooga Chamber,” she says. “Once you build that community, you’re able to lean on them on days when you need encouragement and guidance.”

Whether through her previous career as a collegiate volleyball coach or in her current role as Sales and Marketing Coordinator at MurMaid Mattress, Kristen Davis strives to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
She and her husband, Taylor, have the unique opportunity of being the third generation of Kristen’s family to continue the legacy of serving Chattanooga through MurMaid Mattress. “Seeing how this company started with my Mimi and Pap and how my parents have grown it into what it
is today is inspiring to me,” shares Kristen. ““Working with my parents has been both an incredible learning experience and a unique challenge. I’ve had the opportunity to see all aspects of the company, gain invaluable knowledge from my parents, and navigate the dynamics of mixing family and business—all while getting to work alongside my husband.”
Because MurMaid is locally owned, the company has the freedom to partner with local organizations and give back to the community in unique ways that Kristen loves. “Making a difference in our community and helping others is what drives me every day,” she says. “Growing up, I never fully understood how mattress could change someone’s life, but when we get a call that children are sleeping on the floor and we have the opportunity to help, even in a small way, that is what brings me the most joy in this field.”

Opening a restaurant was never on Sujata Singh’s radar. When the Chattanooga community started embracing her scratch-made Indian cuisine, the path became clear.
Singh hails from the Bihar region of northeastern India. She and her husband landed in Chattanooga for her husband’s job upon finishing his fellowship. Over time, she grew weary with the limited, less impressive Indian food options.
“I didn’t grow up with dishes like chicken tikka masala. That’s not traditional Indian food, but many think it is,” Singh says. “So many new restaurants were opening, but none were Indian.”
So, she took matters into her own hands. In June 2019, Singh hosted her first multi-course pop-up dinner, serving authentic Indian cuisine and her personal favorite dishes. Each event drew more guests and built more buzz, eventually selling out and creating a loyal following that would one day become her restaurant’s regulars.
In 2021, when the former Subway space at Miller Plaza became available, Singh seized the opportunity to open her first storefront. She launched a retail shop offering home goods, spices, teas, grab-and-go meals, and snacks,

eventually expanding into lunch service. As her business grew, so did her vision. After thoughtfully transforming the space into a warm, intimate dining room, Singh debuted full dinner service at Spice Trail in September 2024.
Starting with the retail shop gave Singh the chance to learn the ins and outs of the restaurant and hospitality world before fully committing. “Everyone starts somewhere,” she says. “I’m lucky I had friends who were willing to help me learn.”
The Spice Trail menu is Singh’s vision come to life: a curated selection of her favorite regional dishes and Indian specialties. One standout is the Bihari Chicken, her mother’s recipe and a childhood favorite. Other dishes, like the Chicken Makhni, may not be strictly traditional but celebrate the bold spices and flavors that define Indian cuisine. Every dish is thoughtfully chosen to fit the scale of the kitchen and ensure everything is served fresh and intentional.
The menu offers something for everyone: from guests new to Indian cuisine to those looking for bolder, regional flavors. Singh recommends starting with the samosas, a beloved staple across India and a guest favorite at Spice Trail. These golden, flaky pastries are filled with spiced potatoes and peas, making them the perfect way to kick off any meal. Another appetizer she suggests is the Paneer Pakora, crisp-fried bites of Indian cheese that deliver a satisfying, savory start.
For those easing into Indian flavors, the Chicken Makhni is a natural choice. While not classically Indian, Singh says it’s flavorful, comforting, and approachable for first-time diners.
Adventurous eaters might gravitate toward the Champaran Lamb. The stew is slow-cooked for four hours until the meat is tender and fall-off-the-bone, resulting in a rustic, deeply spiced dish that feels like a warm hug.
Singh also encourages guests to pair their meal with a glass of wine. While wine might not be the first thing that comes to mind with Indian food, she believes it’s a natural fit. The restaurant’s robust beverage menu offers plenty of pairing options, and Singh and her staff are always happy to make recommendations.
Just a few years ago, opening a restaurant wasn’t even on Singh’s radar. Now, she takes pride in how far the journey has taken her.
“I’m so proud of what we’ve built,” she says. “My staff is wonderful. They put their heart and soul into this place. It’s amazing to see, and incredibly fulfilling.”

Empowerment, to me, is the ability to choose my story—and therefore, my experience. When I do this, I become the creator of my life instead of being a victim to it. Too often, unconscious beliefs shape our lives, keeping us from stepping into who we want to be. My greatest power is to choose what I believe about my life and experience.
Acceptance Alchemy helps women uncover these patterns and reclaim their power to choose. Using tools from personal growth, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), and energy work, we guide women toward greater self-awareness, empowerment and transformation.
At Acceptance Alchemy, every circle, class, or workshop begins with an invitation to approach the experience with non-judgment and curiosity, ensuring every woman feels safe, supported, and free to explore her journey.
Question your story. Especially the one that tells you that you’re not enough. These beliefs feel real because we’ve repeated them for so long, but they are not truth—they are patterns.
A common misconception about victim consciousness education is that taking responsibility for our story means self-blame. This couldn’t be further from the truth. It teaches women how their thoughts shape their experiences and shows them they have the power to shift their perspective. Rather than focusing on blame, this work offers choice—the choice to be the hero of your story rather than feeling trapped in “victim consciousness,” or feeling at the mercy of the world around you. NLP helps us recognize how our unconscious mind influences our reality and empowers us to shift limiting beliefs to create the life we truly desire. This work is not therapy—it’s education.
If I could give one piece of advice to every woman, it would be this: question your story—especially the one that tells you that you’re not enough. These beliefs feel real because we’ve repeated them for so long, but they are not truth—they are patterns. The moment you begin to question them, transformation begins. Acceptance Alchemy offers tools and education to help women rewrite these narratives and reclaim their wholeness, to question their stories one at a time.
I’m excited to share two upcoming opportunities for women ready to step into empowerment:
The Womb Within: Transforming Grief into Grace—September 4-7 at Hiawassee Acres, Is a retreat dedicated to honoring pregnancy loss, offering a safe space for mourning, connection, and transformation. Early Bird & VIP pricing is available until June!
Acceptance Alchemy LIVE—our monthly women’s circle for ongoing growth, support, and self-discovery. Each month, we explore concepts of Acceptance Alchemy such as personal empowerment, radical acceptance, forgiveness and to offer a container to reconnect with our inner wisdom.
If you’re ready to rewrite your story and embrace the wholeness that has always been yours, Acceptance Alchemy is here to guide you. For more information, to schedule a free consultation or to learn more about courses and programs, visit QuestionYourStory.com
Tennessee Awning Company, a business with roots dating back to 1905, is now thriving under the leadership of Amy Clinton and her daughter Ashley Clinton. Together, they are not only continuing the company’s legacy but also breaking barriers in the traditionally male-dominated construction industry.
Amy’s journey into ownership was unexpected but serendipitous. With a strong background in construction, she initially joined Tennessee Awning Company to assist with measurements and quotes. What started as a part-time role soon evolved into a full-fledged ownership opportunity—a challenge she embraced wholeheartedly.
Ashley, on the other hand, took a different path before joining her mother. After earning a degree in marketing and sales from Georgia Southern University and starting a career in recruiting, she felt the pull to return home to Chattanooga. The chance to work alongside her mother was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. Now, she handles sales and estimating, bringing fresh marketing strategies, including a stronger social media presence, to the business.
Working as a mother-daughter team has its advantages. Their deep-rooted connection allows them to collaborate seamlessly, balancing responsibilities while supporting each other. While the construction industry often assumes women are there for administrative roles, Amy and Ashley break the mold by handling everything—from measuring and quoting to project management.
As Ashley prepares to take over the company in the future, she is inspired by her mother’s success in growing the business. Together, they encourage other women to enter male-dominated fields with confidence, emphasizing the importance of expertise, smart hiring, and continuous learning.
For Amy and Ashley, success is about more than just business—it’s about family, resilience, and paving the way for future generations of women in construction.

In a world where aesthetics, health, and self-confidence intertwine more than ever, women seeking plastic surgery are looking for more than just procedures—they're searching for trust, expertise, and thoughtful guidance. At Erlanger Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, they find all that and more.
Founded in 1958, Erlanger Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is Chattanooga’s first and largest plastic surgery practice. With a legacy of excellence spanning over six decades, this highly specialized team of board-certified, fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeons—and orthopedic hand specialists—brings not only skill, but heart, to every procedure. These physicians also serve as faculty members at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine – Chattanooga, where they train the next generation of surgical talent.
The team’s surgical expertise covers the full spectrum—from trauma and cancer reconstruction to cosmetic enhancements and pediatric craniofacial surgery. Erlanger Hayes Hand Center, part of the practice, also leads the region in reconstructive care for traumatic hand injuries. But as comprehensive as their care is, what truly sets them apart is their patient-centered philosophy.
“There’s a deep level of trust involved when someone seeks reconstructive or cosmetic surgery,” one provider shares. “Particularly with our reconstructive patients, we value that trust and strive to be that thoughtful, reliable friend during what can be one of the most vulnerable moments in their lives.”
The same ethos carries over to their cosmetic patients. With each consultation, patients can expect an honest, candid evaluation—no hype, no hard sell. Instead, the team emphasizes creating safe, realistic, and personalized treatment plans, always with longterm wellbeing in mind.
A growing trend in the field, especially among women seeking subtle but effective improvements, is the blend of surgical and non-surgical treatments. Combining procedures can optimize outcomes while minimizing recovery time. Erlanger is leading the way
by integrating cutting-edge technology with artistic precision, ensuring results that are as natural-looking as they are transformative.
One of the practice’s standout offerings is their integrated post-surgery support—especially vital after reconstructive work. For example, their in-house hand therapists are instrumental in recovery for patients who’ve undergone cancer or trauma-related surgeries. “They’re not just part of the team—they’re key to the outcomes,” a provider emphasizes.
Of course, plastic surgery still carries its fair share of misconceptions, especially when it comes to cosmetic procedures. Many assume that every surgery requires general anesthesia or a long recovery period, but that’s far from the truth. With today’s innovations and Erlanger’s conservative, education-forward approach, women can often find treatments that suit their lifestyle, comfort level, and goals without needing extended downtime.
Education is, in fact, a pillar of Erlanger’s approach. Whether a woman is considering a facelift, breast augmentation, or a non-invasive option like injectables or laser treatments, she’ll receive comprehensive information on the risks, benefits, and what to realistically expect. “The path to confidence looks different for every person,” a provider notes. “We’re here to help each patient find what’s right for her.”
When asked what advice they’d offer to a woman considering surgery for the first time, their message is refreshingly simple: “Come for a visit. No pressure, no gimmicks—just sound advice from experienced surgeons who take pride in their craft.”
In a world of filtered images and fleeting trends, Erlanger Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a beacon of integrity. Their team isn’t chasing clout on social media or making promises they can’t keep. Instead, they’re focused on delivering time-tested, beautiful results that honor each woman’s individuality and vision.
For women in Chattanooga and beyond, the choice is clear: Trust the team where experience meets empathy—and where your journey toward self-confidence is guided by nothing less than excellence.
“The path to confidence looks different for every person. We’re here to help each patient find what’s right for her.”
In a world of filtered images and fleeting trends, Erlanger Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a beacon of integrity. They’re focused on delivering time-tested, beautiful results that honor each woman’s individuality and vision.

For many women, pelvic health remains a taboo topic—one often shrouded in embarrassment and misinformation. However, at The Pelvic Method, breaking the silence is at the core of their mission. We learned more from Dr. Erin Westner, founder of the Pelvic Method, to discuss the importance of pelvic
“MANY
painful periods, or even constipation. However, these symptoms can escalate into more serious conditions like prolapse or chronic pain.
Pelvic therapy at The Pelvic Method isn’t just about symptom relief—it’s about empowering women to reclaim their bod-
floor therapy and how it can transform lives.
Sometimes, a career finds you before you even realize it. For the founder of The Pelvic Method, it was a professor who first recognized her potential for pelvic health specialization, leading her to an intensive clinical program at the University of Michigan. Through her work, she quickly saw how deeply personal and life-altering pelvic health issues could be. “Many women suffer in silence, feeling ashamed to discuss their symptoms,” she shares. “Being entrusted with their care is incredibly impactful.”
Dissatisfied with the limitations of traditional physical therapy settings, she created The Pelvic Method—an environment focused on personalized, holistic care without the constraints of corporate or insurance restrictions.
One of the biggest misconceptions about pelvic health is that it’s all about Kegels. “Pelvic floor therapy is so much more than that,” she explains. “We focus on tissue health, muscle relaxation, and full-body integration—not just squeezing your pelvic muscles.”
Women often ignore early signs of dysfunction, such as occasional leakage,
ies. From pregnancy preparation to postmenopausal wellness, their approach addresses everything from bladder and bowel concerns to sexual health and overall well-being.
A simple yet powerful recommendation? Walking. “Varying terrain challenges the pelvic floor in a healthy way,” she notes. Hydration, stress management, and recognizing personal needs are also key components of maintaining pelvic health.
Despite societal discomfort around discussing pelvic health, The Pelvic Method encourages women to seek the care they deserve. “You’re not alone,” she assures. “Find a provider who makes you feel safe and supported.”
Ultimately, she believes that when women prioritize their health, they uplift those around them. “When a woman thrives, so does her family, workplace, and society.”
For those ready to take the next step in their health journey, The Pelvic Method offers a safe space where women can heal, learn, and reclaim their confidence. Because every woman deserves to live without pain, fear, or shame.
