tial as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Founded in McKinney in 1968 as the Boys Clubs of McKinney, it quickly expanded to encompass girls and all of Collin County in 1988. Currently serving more than 9,000 youth annually, each Club offers a safe place for children ages 5 to 18 to experience a variety of programs that speak to their emotional, educational, physical, and social development.
BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OFFER PROGRAM ACTIVITIES IN FIVE CORE AREAS:
• Character & Leadership- Leadership programs for ages 11–13 are offered in the Torch Club and for ages 14-18 in the Keystone Club. Both groups focus on community service and outreach programs.
• Education & Career- Power Hour provides 45 minutes of homework help and tutoring after school to
dents in investments, entrepreneurship, saving, and budgeting money.
• Health & Wellness- SMART Moves uses a team approach to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior. Healthy Habits promotes healthy lifestyles for the whole family with preventive screenings, nutrition, and exercise education. Triple Play is designed to address the body, mind, and soul through sports club activities, healthy habits and nutrition, and social recreation.
• Sports & Recreation- Participants learn athletic skills, values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, anger management, and discipline.
• The Arts- Development and appreciation of arts using photography, performing arts, and creative writing.
In addition to after-school programs, BGCCC also hosts an 8-week Summer

Camp which is offered across Clubs and sites throughout Collin County. Summer camps include arts & crafts, STEM/robotics, field trips, outside play and activities, and other enrichment activities for youth.
Programs are administered by staff and community volunteers and rely on financial and volunteer support from sponsors including Capital One, PepsiCo, Toyota, Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Dallas Mavericks, Coca-Cola, H-E-B, Texas Health Resources, and many others. Their financial investments and the engagement of partners across the community are making life-long impacts. In 2023, 8,921 students were served through the Clubs, providing 119,060 meals and snacks and 69,443 homework hours. Of those 8,921 children, 50% indicated their involvement in BGCCC saved their life, 100% were promoted to the next grade level, and 0 percent have been involved in the juvenile justice system. Additionally, 100% of actively engaged high school seniors graduate and go on to college, trade school, or military acceptance, or prepare to enter the workforce.
Given that there are over 200,000 youths enrolled in Collin County schools today, with over 35,000 of those from low-income families, the need is greater than ever. Collin County residents can support the efforts of the BGCCC through making a one-time or monthly donation, hosting a fundraiser, volunteering time, or supporting the organization’s special events like the upcoming Cirque du Soiree 20th Anniversary Chrysalis Ball on October 12th at the Omni PGA in Frisco with Title Sponsor Ryan, LLC. “A Curiously Unexpected Evening” gala promises to entertain and embody BGCCC’s commitment to the inspiring aspirations of their youth. Sponsorships and tickets help ensure more kids are served more often, allowing BGCCC to continue to offer nationally recognized programs. Join us in our mission to shape the future leaders of our community.
At the BGCCC, the ability to grow and serve more of the youth in Collin County will set the framework for hope and opportunity, shaping our future leaders.

Inspector Josephine Black and the Case of the Missing Mona Lisa By Niki Carbajal

Author Niki Carbajal

Inspector Josephine Black and the Case of the Missing Mona Lisa is a children's tale about a girl detective who cracks the case of the world-famous stolen artwork. In her search, she discovers the thief's motive is loneliness and wishes only to have a kind smile sent his way. It's a lesson in friendship while also demonstrating the consequences of our actions. The book is based on true historical events - a thief actually stored the stolen masterpiece in a case in his room!
Beyond the initial story and as an afterword, an introduction is made of the truest friend we have in Jesus Christ. Implied through Biblical principles of friendship, commitment, and loyalty throughout the pages, an explanation of who Jesus was and is provides an opportunity for further exploration.
The illustrations include works of art found in the Louvre Museum at the time of one of the historical thefts. The very creative illustrator and artist, Jose Portillo, meticulously studied details of the Louvre which are reflected in the book including the marble floors, wall paneling, and the placement of
art installations. Local to Celina, Jose and Niki worked closely on the development of Inspector Josephine Black as a "character next door" and placed an emphasis on diversity in the supporting characters. Jose heard the author's desire for texture and authenticity and history and created a world of detailed wonder. The book was written in response to the silly rhymes author Niki Carbajal made up while raising lots of kids. Other adventures with Inspector Black are rattling around in her head including, Tombs of the Pharaohs and the Great Wall of China. Focusing on history and fun to create lasting lessons is the focus of future books. In fact, the glossary of ....The Case of the Missing Mona Lisa includes reference pictures and artist details of every masterpiece found throughout the book. Both the author's and illustrator's desires are that readers will be inspired to study the featured art and will one day remember the book when visiting the Musee' du Louvre. [accent on first e]

The UPS Store
Celina Community Spotlight

Our local neighborhoods are the heart of Celina. Andy “Hop” Hopkins, owner of The UPS Store, is highlighting one of many of Celina’s finest communities on a monthly basis.

COMMUNITY: GREEN MEADOWS
LOCATION: Located on Punk Carter Parkway just west of the Dallas North Tollway, Green Meadows is perfectly situated to take advantage of Celina’s Historic Downtown as well as quick and convenient access to Prosper, Frisco, Plano, and all the northern employment and entertainment centers.
OVERVIEW: In addition to being a well-appointed master-planned community with access to some of the best shopping, restaurants, and entertainment in North Texas, Green Meadows is zoned for Celina ISD schools which has rapidly developed a reputation as a “Destination District.” Excelling in academics, athletics, and strong extracurricular programs, the district is perpetually “Paving The Way For The Future.”
AMENITIES: The amenity center sports a resort-style pool with not one but two 30-foot water slides as well as pool space for the little ones! For those looking to exercise but avoid the summer heat, a state-of-the-art fitness center features prominently within the 10,000 square foot clubhouse that also features party rooms, event spaces and a kitchen.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: With scenic hike and bike trails throughout the community, there is plenty of space to fit in some biking, running, or strolling with your friends and neighbors. Additionally, the on-premise community gardens encourage young and old alike to find their green thumb.
SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS: Green Meadows features a first of it’s kind managed bee hive! Teaming with Alvéole, the community named the queen “Queen Meadows” in a contest last year. Besides producing honey for the local community, bees play a pivotal role in our ecosystem. Green Meadows and their beekeeper, Caroline Batson, are helping educate the community at large about this incredible resource.
From our doorstep to yours, the UPS Store Celina with Andy Hopkins is connecting neighbors. We are looking forward to meeting you in Green Meadows!

BOOGIE THE RIDING LONGHORN
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CIRCLE 25 RANCH

“Boogie” is a 6-year-old Longhorn by breed, but a Fightin’ Texas Aggie and Celina Bobcat by heart. He lives in Celina, Texas at Circle 25 Ranch owned by Matt and Lauren Douglas. However, he feels like everyone in the community is family.
What makes Boogie special is his extremely laid-back disposition, intelligence, desire to please, and love for social activities. He enjoys being rubbed and brushed and will go out of his way to seek attention. Boogie has accomplished a lot in his short life including riding in parades, participating in school events, graduation parties, corporate events, rodeos, commercials and photo shoots, and posing for magazines. Anything with people, he enjoys.
Boogie has a horn length of over 85 inches and weighs roughly 1,850 pounds. At home he has a best friend, who is also a longhorn, named Gus. Gus’s horns are much larger at 100 inches in length and he weighs over 2,000 pounds. Boogie has a nose ring and his reins connect to this ring. This ring is used to steer Boogie. He loves to be rubbed under his chin, chest, back, and ears. However, he does not like to be tapped on the forehead or nose.
Matt and Lauren Douglas both graduated from Texas A&M University where Matt was a football letterman. Both Matt and Lauren participated in Aggies For Christ and met at church. They have two little girls named Harper (9) and Madison (7), who, like their Mom, Dad, uncles, aunts and cousins, plan on attending Texas A&M. The Douglas Family takes so much joy from seeing kids light up when they see Boogie up close. They are always thankful when they hear stories about stuffed animals being named “Boogie,” drawings that kids give them of him, or seeing kids wear a t-shirt with Boogie’s picture on the back. See more of Boogie at Circle25Ranch.com

SAVING LEWIS

OWNERS OF BUFF CITY SOAP IN CELINA ADOPT DOG FROM SOUTH KOREA
Lewis, the golden retriever of Natalie and Ryan Imhoff, owners of Celina’s Buff City Soap, has an out-of-the-normal adoption story. Lewis was born and raised in the South Korean meat markets.
On July 4th, 2022, Natalie lost her beloved golden, Murphy, too soon. He was young but was found to have cancer and died shortly after the diagnosis. Natalie felt strongly that instead of purchasing her next Golden from a reputable breeder, she wanted to honor her dog Murphy by rescuing next. After doing a lot of research and going down some rabbit holes, Natalie started learning about the horrific conditions in

the South Korean meat markets. She discovered that dogs were being rescued and brought back to the United States. Natalie knew this was something that would take a lot of patience and many unknowns, but she was willing to put in the work no matter what.
Through hours and hours of internet searching, Natalie found Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas (RRLV). It was founded in Las Vegas, NV, by Danielle Roth-Lapolla and Jon Lapolla in 2019 and focuses on International Rescue Retrievers. RRLV’s goal is to save dogs in terrible situations overseas. The more Natalie learned about the rescue and the dogs they rescued, the more she knew this was the route she wanted to take. She completed the application and interview process but was turned down. Natalie soon learned that RRLV only places dogs within 100 miles of the foundation. They do not want any of their rescued dogs placed in a shelter again, so they must be close enough to collect them if necessary. After some back and forth, it was determined that the adoption manager’s sister lives in the Gunter area so a compromise could be arranged.
Soon, Natalie received news that a male golden, about three years old, had been rescued from a slaughterhouse. He was quickly moved to the Retriever Rescue Lodge, which was started by RRLV. The Lodge has everything a dog needs to survive while getting healthy and waiting on their freedom flights to Las Vegas. After being rescued, they offer everything they can including a safe place to lay their heads. The Lodge provides 24-hour security cameras inside and out, suites for

each rescue, an indoor and outdoor playroom, a bathing station, food, and constant love!
In February 2023, Lewis made his freedom flight from South Korea to Las Vegas. The rescue team coached Natalie through the first few days of adjustment for Lewis. Natalie needed to be the first person who opened his travel crate, to be the one consistently by his side, and to be sensitive to the abuse and trauma he had faced.
Natalie would spend one night in a hotel in Las Vegas. She went in through the back door to limit Lewis’s exposure to the lights and sounds of a casino. Natalie knew she was doing the right thing when the hotel security guard who let them in was also named Lewis. The next day, Natalie and Lewis boarded a JSX Charter flight to allow him to travel with her in the cabin to Dallas. Although he had his own seat, his seat of preference was her lap or the aisle floor at her feet.
After arriving home, Lewis had a long recovery ahead of him. He was still undergoing treatment for worms. It was found that he had a broken tail and a cracked tooth. Because he had always been on a grate floor and in a crate, he had nerve damage in his paws and minimal muscle tone. It has taken time for him to develop the strength to jump on the bed or couch, climb the stairs, or even walk down the street and back. Natalie confirms that he is her constant companion, and she is his person.
In July 2023, Lewis was given a buddy. Golden Retriever number two was rehomed to the Imhoff family. Nash was a six-month-old Golden full of all the energy and crazy you expect from a puppy. Nash has been great for Lewis, teaching him how to behave like a dog
Lewis will always carry some trauma from his past. He does not like anyone to touch his feet or loud noises. He does not want people to walk behind him or to walk through doors when someone is standing nearby. He is shy and reserved around people he does not know. But, Natalie shares how you can also see his natural Golden Retriever personality coming to the surface. “He is so loving and perfect for our family,” Natalie says.

BACK TO BACK TO BACK STATE CHAMPS
Celina High School Girls Soccer Team Are 3-Peat UIL State Champions And Making History

ARTICLE BY SHARLA DAVENPORT PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY
Webster’s Dictionary defines dynasty as “a powerful group…that maintains its position for a considerable time”. Celina’s dynasty in sports is notorious, and the newest power group belongs to girl's soccer.
Last April, Celina High School (CHS) Girl's Soccer won their third consecutive state championship becoming the second girl's soccer team in Texas to pull off a historic “3-Peat” (also District Champions three consecutive years). CHS has appeared yearly in the state championships since 2021.
Head Coach Alexander Adams knew the 2024 season would be tough after being undefeated in 2023 plus graduating nine seniors. “The odds were against us,” says Adams. During a non-district tournament, the Bobcats lost to Grapevine, a 5A school and defending state champs. They later tied in two games to other 5A schools. People began to doubt Celina could win state again, especially with a young team -- over half were freshmen or sophomores.
Coach Adams and the players, however, knew different. “Once we got into district games, the belief came back,” he notes. Adams kept the team motivated, and the girls responded by improving each game, allowing only eight goals all season and winning their last nineteen games. Clearly the team overcame their obstacles.
The season was successful in part due to Sammy Quiroz and Ryleigh Stifflemire scoring the three goals in the championship game. Proud father and Bobcat supporter, Todd Brantley, reports goalie Kaitlyn Gustafson, defender Makenna Brantley, and center back Brookelyn Babb had key roles too.
Reflecting on her Celina career, Makenna Brantley says, “Playing Celina girls soccer has meant the world to me. Helping be part of three state championships will always be special.” She continued, “I personally believe the reason for our success is that we had so many great players who work well together and put the team first. We all cherish the State Championships more than any award we received individually.” Brantley will play at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs this fall.
CHS Girls Soccer’s accomplishments are more impressive considering the program has existed less than a decade. Celina graduate, Haley Berg, played on the first team in 2016. Berg then played for University of Texas earning All-Big 12 Conference (three times) and now plays professional soccer. She recently signed to play for Dallas Trinity FC.
“My time playing soccer for Celina was definitely special, especially because it was the first time Celina had a soccer team,” recounts Berg. “We made it to the second round of playoffs our first year! I cherish these times playing with friends and girls from childhood. I am very proud of where the program has gone since then,” she continued.
By 2021, Celina earned its first appearance in the state semifinals, unfortunately losing to Midlothian Heritage. However, CHS player Taylor Zdrojewski was named Dallas Morning News Player of the Year for scoring a record 114 goals in a single season. Ashlyn Vana also set a record with fifty-one assists.
Coach Adams joined Celina the next season. “Based on that last loss, I made some tactical decisions to give the ball to others,” he recalls. More players scored as a result creating an unstoppable offense. In the championship game, the Bobcats avenged their previous loss beating Midlothian Heritage. Todd Brantley notes, “That was arguably the CONTINUED >

greatest state final in high school soccer!” Adams agrees as Celina came from behind to win the school’s first championship via a shootout.
Having only graduated two seniors, 2023 was destined for greatness. Adams said, “It was exciting to know we were bringing back almost all of the championship team.” With players like State MVP, Lexi Tuite, the Bobcats were undefeated. Tuite earned a state record for the most goals in a championship game, including three goals within the first fifteen minutes. Celina remains one of only three teams in Texas to have a perfect season.
2023 graduate, Tuite, remembers her time as a Bobcat, “I loved playing at CHS. It’s a stronger sense of pride playing for your school alongside your friends. It will always be a part of me,” she states. Tuite currently plays for the University of Northern Colorado.
CHS Girls Soccer’s success is sure to continue. Coach Adams asserts many did not realize Celina’s talent during the infant stage. “Doing so well so early in the program’s existence opened people’s eyes,” he says. Youth soccer players now realize Celina has a foothold on girl's soccer. Families see Celina as a good place where their daughter can be a part of a growing dynasty.
It was the talent, the “top-notch” facilities, plus the legendary athletic department that drew Adams to CHS. His pride over the last three years is evident. “The girls give up so much to compete. Each of them, not just starters, train hard and give it their all,” he boasted. “We have a culture of knowing what needs to be accomplished, what needs to be done.”
For example, the 2024 Seniors have been to the state championships every year in high school, having won the last three. Sammy Quiroz also won two state Cross Country championships, thus having five state championships under her belt so far. “Hopefully we’ll get her a sixth,” remarks Coach Adams. Obviously, that’s the next “goal” for The Bobcats – to be the first soccer team to win four consecutive years - never accomplished in forty years of Texas soccer.
While championships are great, it’s the relationships that Coach Adams appreciates the most. “We have such good kids in Celina and amazing community support,” he says. He’s amazed how Celina takes care of its people, doing what’s best for everyone. He believes that’s why he has such a good coaching staff, and why the schools retain good teachers. “People without daughters on the team come to watch a game, which doesn’t happen often in girl's soccer,” he says. “Each time we won state, the town rallied behind the girls coming out in massive numbers (not just families) including a police escort and fire department waterfall.” He appreciates that the team can create such pride and achievements for Celina.

For instance, Celina Girl’s Soccer has produced numerous accomplishments in less than a decade. To date, the program holds the following stats:
1 – Professional Soccer Player (Haley Berg, Dallas Trinity FC)
1 – Gatorade Player of the Year National Runner-Up (Taylor Zdrojewski)
10 – College commits
4 – State Championship appearances (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024)
3 – Consecutive State & District Championships (2022, 2023, 2024)
1 – Undefeated Season (3rd Texas team to have a perfect season, 2023)
2 – Dallas Morning News Players of the Year (Taylor Zdrojewski, Lexi Tuite)
1 – Texas Record for most goals in a single season (Taylor Zdrojewski, 2nd all time nationally)
1 – Texas Record for most assists in a season (Ashlyn Vana)
1 – State Tournament Record for goals (5 in state championship game, Lexi Tuite)
3 – State Tournament MVPs (Taylor Zdrojewski 2022, Lexi Tuite 2023, Grace Pritchard 2024)
20+ – Various All-State, All-District & All-Academic State, Area, Region and District Awards
The Bobcats have a tradition of successful sports teams. CHS Girls Soccer is no different building a triumphant era. Next year’s season brings new challenges with young players and new obstacles to conquer. This powerful group of dominant players are likely to make history keeping the dynasty alive and strong.

KIND OF A BIG DILL
Pickleball’s Popularity Making Its Way To Our Home

Although nothing quite beats the crunch and zest of a well-fermented cucumber, pickles are no part of this newly popularized sport. Born from two Washington families’ boredom, pickleball came to life on a sunny day in the summer of 1965. Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell were returning to Pritchard’s home after a day of golf and arrived to find their families were looking for a way to pass the time. The two dads were not going to let an old badminton court without enough rackets lead their loved ones to summertime blues. Instead, they improvised with spare ping pong paddles and a wiffle ball. When Pritchard’s wife Joan noted its similarity to the thrown together crew of a rowing “pickle boat,” pickleball found its name and became a sport that quickly gained traction in the Pacific Northwest.
Now, it is the fastest growing sport in America. Last year alone, more than 13 million Americans picked up a pickleball paddle. The sport’s takeover began in 2022 when participation grew by 86 percent but has proven that it may be more than just a fad, as participation climbed 52 percent over

SWIG Mega Mug Available at Honeysuckle Rose
Cambridge Crossing

the past 12 months of 2023. Not only this, but the sport saw a 111 percent increase in participants who played frequently enough to reflect a passion for the game.
As Americans have not been known for their health, activity, or passion in recent years, this rise in pickleball popularity could be a positive step for many. So, what is it that put the sport in such high demand?
The fast-paced, friendly, and enjoyable nature of the game are to thank. For starters, it’s affordable and easy to pick up. Whether using jerry-rigged or DIY supplies, the gear needed to start playing
can cost next to nothing. You can always upgrade your gear if you fall head over heels for the game, as so many Americans have.
Designed with family enjoyment in mind, it only takes a few tries to figure out the game. This is one way that the sport is accessible, but it also is played on a small court, as well as fastpaced and close enough to socialize.

If you somehow haven’t had the opportunity to see what everyone’s talking about, pickleball has made its way to our community with courts waiting to be broken in. There are already pickleball courts at the parks in downtown Celina, Mustang Lakes, and Cambridge Crossing. Wilson Creek Park, Celina’s next big park, will be a $50-million project across 100 acres with construction set to begin in the winter of 2025 and a projected completion date in fall of 2026. The best news for pickleball enthusiasts is that the new park will include lighted pickleball courts. Be sure that you don’t miss out on Fall 2026, but don’t wait until then to pick up a paddle. Catch you at the courts!

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”
Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “That, in turn, fosters an environment where the next time a family hosts Thanksgiving or has friends over, the owner and their dogs fall into the habit of obeying commands because of the confidence built through all the work put in beforehand.”
Even dogs with a troubled history can achieve improvement.
“We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.
• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it , but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.
• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.
DOG
SOCIALIZING TIPS:
• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.
• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.
• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.
• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.
• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.
• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.
HOW TO THROW A BIRTHDAY BASH FOR YOUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS:

Summertime is busy time, and that often means eating on the go. Whether you’re at constant baseball games or meeting up for a regular play date, you’re probably bringing food along with you to feed your crew. And there’s no meal that’s as on-the-go friendly as the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
And don’t get me wrong — I love a PB&J. But months of eating anything can get a little old, and this summer, I started to wonder if there was a way to zhuzh up the ol’ standby.
I was actually inspired by a sandwich at one of my favorite places to eat. All the restaurant’s sandwiches feature cheese. So color me surprised when I found that they had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the menu — with the addition of sheep’s cheese. And cue more surprise when I discovered that it was absolutely delicious.
IT’S PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME
CHANGE UP YOUR PB&J GAME BY DISCOVERING NEW WAYS TO ENJOY THE OL’ STANDBY
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE CURRID
All summer, I was craving this sandwich, a fresh PB&J sandwich on sourdough. I decided to try my own at home with what I had on hand, which was goat cheese. And it opened up a whole new world for me.
The PB&J with goat cheese started being my standard poolside sandwich this summer, and then I started talking to other people about it, spreading the gospel of the PB&J with cheese, and they would share their PB&J innovations with me. You could toast them! Put chips on them! Add bacon! The possibilities were endless.
The PB&J is so nostalgic and, yeah, sometimes, you just want a really basic one on white bread with grape jelly and creamy Jif like you had when you were a kid. But it’s also fun to be playful about it, which is nostalgic in its own way, too — being innovative and doing something a little weird or against the rules, just like when you were a kid.
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO CHANGE UP YOUR PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH:
Change up your bread: One easy way to liven up your sandwich is to use different bread. That sourdough you may have learned to make during the pandemic is a perfect bread to use, or you could opt for milk bread, a Japanese option that is fluffier and sweeter than white bread.
Get nutty: While most toddlers would balk at crunchy peanut butter, you’re an adult! You can try new things! If you don’t have the crunchy type on hand, you can also just add peanuts between your layers of peanut butter and jelly to get that crunchy fix.
Toast it: One of my favorite ways to make an “elevated” PB&J is to simply toast it. It’s really similar to grilled cheese — make your PB&J, and then spread some butter on the outside on both sides. Melt some butter in a pan and add your sandwich, flipping once browned. If you want to get really fancy, sprinkle some powdered sugar on before you cut into it. I promise it will be your new late-night craving.
Fresh fruit: This is probably the simplest way to up your PB&J game, since technically, you’ve already got fruit on your sandwich in the form of jelly. Try adding some smashed raspberries or cut strawberries to yours next time you make one!
Say cheese: As I said earlier, you’ve gotta try cheese on your PB&J. I’m a fan of goat cheese, specifically the honey variety, but plain versions or those with dried fruit are great, too. The trick is to set it out for 15-20 minutes before making your sandwich to soften it a bit, so it’s easier to spread on delicate bread.

A PENNY SAVED IS A PENNY EARNED
Teaching Kids Good Saving Habits Leads to Greater Financial Stability as an Adult
ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER

According to a December 13, 2022, report by Urban Institute, "What Can Policymakers Do to Help Young Adults Cope with Debt?"
20% of young adults in the US aged 18 to 24 have debt in collections. Debt at this stage of young adults' lives can be especially difficult to manage not only because of their lack of experience but also due to limited incomes and higher interest rates.
We asked local financial expert, Ryan Merchant, to share some advice. Ryan says, "In the days of our youth we think we have all the time in the world; yet as adults, we realize how quickly time passes. Understanding that time is the most precious commodity a young person has, is a valuable lesson that will primarily impact their future when it comes to investing. The advantage of time and saving money consistently is a very powerful combination."
Ryan adds that "With students, I like to share the scenario about a young person who is offered a difficult job, working long hard hours every day for a month. The starting pay is only 1 cent a day, but then the pay is doubled every day for 30 days. Most of the time when I ask students if they would want to do this job, they reply with a resounding no. However, after one month of getting paid a penny a day and doubling it every day for a month, the hard work would have produced over $5 million dollars."
THE YOUNGER SET
Begin teaching your child the concept of money, including the values of coins, from the ages of 4 to 6. During this time, keep it simple. Allow your child to earn money to save in a piggy bank for small chores.
IT’S ALL ELEMENTARY
By the time your child is 7, an allowance is essential to learning about money and developing good habits. Familiarize your kids with banking. Open a savings account, so they can watch their money grow. Also, help them set
achievable goals, such as saving for a new toy or putting away for holiday gifts.
Keep in mind, many banks charge service fees unless a minimum balance is kept, and frequent trips to the bank may be impossible. As an alternative, set up your own 'family bank.' Give your child a spare checkbook ledger or savings passbook. Then copy blank savings deposit and withdrawal slips from your bank for your kids to use. Require them to fill out the slips and log transactions in the ledger. Also, give your kids monthly interest for their savings so they can experience the immediate reward of saving money.
THE TEEN SCENE
Designer clothing, entertainment, and car expenses are the most significant areas of teen spending. Some teens also put away for college. But few are prepared for the adult world. That's because most teens aren't primed for the responsibility of paying for food, housing, and health care costs.
Those teens involved with the family budget and who contribute to family expenses learn a valuable lesson. Opting to show teens the spending categories in which they have a direct impact on family expenses is helpful. Also, agree on a reasonable amount in which your teens can contribute to help cover those expenses. It'll go a long way toward preparing adolescents for adulthood.
Whether teens contribute or not, their working hours should be limited to no more than 10 to 15 per week. According to Cobb, researchers have found adolescents who work, especially 20 or more hours per week, are not as engaged in school as their nonworking peers. Based on various studies, this shortchanges students in the long-term. If you restrict your teens' working hours to ensure success in school, it's good to provide an increased allowance for clothing and personal needs. You can then help your teens to budget their money.
Still, there are many ways teens can learn the value of money and develop good habits.
In fact, limiting teens' funds may force them to be more selective and make wiser financial decisions.
TIPS YOUR KIDS CAN BANK ON
Help your child develop good saving and spending habits in the following ways.
Allow your kids to make some of their own spending decisions. Place reasonable limits. Then offer appropriate guidance while giving your kids opportunities to learn from their mistakes.
Don't loan your kids money every time they want it. But do offer occasional opportunities for them to learn the costs of borrowing and the experience of repaying the loan. When contemplating whether to give your child a loan and how much, there are several considerations. What's the purpose of the loan and their ability to repay the loan within a reasonable time?
Teach your child how to set financial goals. By the teen years, these may include those big-ticket items just mentioned. And don't overlook the importance of short-term goals, which offer your kids a feeling of accomplishment and a boost in self-esteem. Don't be totally secretive about family finances. Kids have few opportunities to see and experience the financial side of the adult world. This doesn't mean you need, or even should, disclose everything. But it's easier for kids to understand if they can see it in concrete terms. Develop a detailed household budget. Then explain it so your adolescent can see how your family spends and why.
Merchant recommends, "At any age, a person should set aside what they can afford every month and make it a habit. Even if it is a small amount of money, with the right amount of time and good investing you can benefit greatly."
