Investment by definition is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We can invest in a lot of things such as our community, our relationships, our finances, and our health with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact.

We can invest in our community by supporting our local businesses, schools and local organizations. We can serve  the community through volunteerism and investment in future generations. On a larger scale, we can participate in public surveys and stay educated and involved with future city planning. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meets longterm financial goals and secures our retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact to not only ourselves but to the people closest to us.

While investing in ourselves, relationships, community and finances can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives are done with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields results. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the ways that we can invest in our community, our finances and with those that we love.

We hope you support, shop and eat local.  Our local businesses in Celina are the heart of our community and are worthy of our investment. Did you know that 74% of licensed agents did not sell a single home in 2024? It’s truly a scary thought that almost three quarters of those in the industry aren’t even selling at all. I’ve always heard that there is an 8 out of 10 failure rate in real estate. That’s an eerily similar stat to those that venture into the restaurant business. One thing is certain, neither career path is for the faint of heart. But how does that relate to you, the consumer? Well… simply put, the difference is in dollars.

As a buyer, it is critical that you know the true value of the home you are purchasing. What is the real cost of home ownership? Some things to consider are the property taxes, MUD or PID fees, HOA dues, future assessments, utility costs, homeowners insurance, floor plan faux pas, the age of the home, and more. When you are ready to make an offer on a house, did you know there are other ways to entice a seller to choose you that does not necessarily equate to a higher sales price? This is not something you can learn via google alone. It requires the knowledge and expertise of a well-versed agent that understands all aspects of what matters to a seller and believe it or not, sales price is only part of their decision.

If you are selling a home, it is every bit as important to make sure you are working with an agent that has first-hand knowledge of your city and community. Not only does the agent’s experience matter but which brokerage they hang their real estate license with does, as well. Being aligned with a forward-thinking company that invests in making certain my clients have the best real estate experience is paramount to me. The Celina Independent School District Board of Trustees named two new schools at the February 24th board meeting. Margie Moore Vasquez Elementary will open Fall 2025. Willard Middle School will open in Fall 2026. Margie Moore Vasquez served 22 of her 44 years in education as the principal at Celina Elementary School. Willard Middle School honors the Willard family’s impact on the community.

Fighting Hunger One Bowl at a Time in McKinney

The mission of Empty Bowls is to hold an annual community event featuring local artisans and food purveyors that raises money and awareness to support nonprofit organizations that directly address hunger in our community. This annual McKinney event showcases handcrafted bowls made and decorated by professional and amateur artists. There also are larger bowls that are part of the silent auction and raffle. Each bowl has a card inside that reads: “This bowl is a reminder to pray for those in the world with empty bowls due to hunger.”

The 2025 event will take place April 25 from 6-8 p.m. in Downtown McKinney.

Proceeds of the event go to Community Lifeline Center to help provide food for their Community Lifeline Market and mobile food distributions, to Community Garden Kitchen to serve hot meals to anyone in need with no questions asked, and to The Little Free Pantry of McKinney, where people can find food anonymously as they need.

WEALTH ANSWERS IMPORTANT QUESTIONS REGARDING FAMILY FINANCE

For local DFW resident Homer Ramirez, helping clients build their family wealth was rooted in his own family’s trauma. “I was not given education about money or wealth from my parents.  My mother sold out of the market at the bottom of the tech bubble in 2001, and my father failed to invest in equities in his 401k at all.” But this was just the start of his story, not the end. Despite his own financial missteps in his twenties, Homer was able to support himself through college.

As he matured, he was intrigued by financial markets and financial planning. “I vowed to become financially savvy and teach my family how to build and manage family wealth so I could provide opportunities to my kids that I never had,” Homer recalls. In his practice, Homer has a big mission: “Empower families to live their best lives in retirement and build generational family wealth through education, an integrated wealth management process, and a handholding service model.”

To share his knowledge, Homer answered a few questions to help educate others.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON INVESTMENT MISTAKES YOU SEE, AND HOW CAN THEY BE AVOIDED?

The first mistake is investing without a plan. Financial plans that align investments with your goals can help take emotions out of investing and help you to avoid buying and selling at the wrong time.  Focusing on the timeline of the goal helps investors stick with their investment plan through the ups and downs of the market. This keeps you from chasing returns and changing your investment to what did good last year.

The other mistake is not diversifying. After all, diversification is the holy grail of investing. Diversification means not picking one stock or one sector.  Instead, make sure you invest across multiple asset classes, industries, and geographic regions that are uncorrelated or have low correlation.  Picking 30 different stocks that would all perform poorly if interest rates rose or if a certain policy was passed is not diversifying your risk because they’re all positively correlated, meaning they all go up and down together.

Finally, you can’t ignore fees and tax drag. Fees and taxes can eat into your investment returns which, over time, can mean less wealth accumulation.  Working with a professional that is an investment fiduciary, meaning someone who has a legal obligation to act for the beneficiary’s benefit--not their own--can help educate you on the fees and tax impacts that may not be apparent at first glance.

HOW DO YOU HELP CLIENTS NAVIGATE THE COMPLEXITIES OF TAX PLANNING AS THEY APPROACH RETIREMENT OR PASS WEALTH TO THE NEXT GENERATION?

I help by ensuring my clients understand their taxes. Texas is a community property state, which means married couples can benefit from a full step-up in basis on certain appreciated assets.  Knowing the tax laws and working with a wealth advisor and tax professional who does can help with titling assets appropriately to take advantage of this huge tax saver when transferring wealth to family.

I also help my clients consider charitable giving. Giving feels good and helps our communities while also giving us a tax benefit. However, there are more options to gifting than just writing a check. By utilizing some lesser known strategies like donor-advised funds, philanthropic goals and wealth creation can both be accomplished.

WHAT ROLE DOES ESTATE PLANNING PLAY IN YOUR INVESTMENT ADVICE FOR YOUR CLIENTS?

Estate planning is the foundation of every financial plan, and yet it is commonly overlooked.  For wealthy families, poorly executed estate plans, or no plan at all, can cause a burden to others.  We ensure that when passing on wealth, there will not be surprising negative outcomes. GET GARDEN READY WITH SHADES OF GREEN NURSERY + LANDSCAPE

Many Celina residents are ready for winter to be over and eagerly await the arrival of spring. It is a time for warmer temperatures, kites, sunshine, rain and new beginnings. This is especially so for springtime gardening. As the winter weather leaves the area and the warm spring rains arrive, it is a great time to prepare your gardens for Spring and Summer. Local gardening experts can provide excellent advice for preparing your gardens for beautiful summer blooms and bountiful vegetable harvests. It is essential to realize that a successful garden can happen by starting with some crucial steps.

One thing that is important is to get your garages or storage sheds in order. Having the right tools and equipment can make a big difference in whether your garden succeeds or fails. Ensure your gardening tools are in good repair, and perform the recommended maintenance. Oiling hinges and sharpening your blades will make a world of difference as you begin to work in your garden. Sharp blades on shovels and trimmers mean you can cut and dig more easily.

Another item to check off your list is to ensure you are stocked with essential supplies. Having ample fertilizers and soil amendments before you start will help you be prepared for when you begin your spring plantings and garden maintenance. Have some extra soil ready to fill low spots and to level problem areas.

Pruning trees and shrubs at this time is a good idea to prepare for those that bloom. Late winter and early spring are great times to prune. Make sure to sterilize your pruners by wiping them down with isopropyl alcohol and a clean towel. This precaution will help avoid any plant diseases.

Preparing your soil and setting up your beds and planters can also be done in the spring. Soil preparation will also make your gardening easier. Remove and clear out weeds, old mulch and any debris that has gathered in the winter. Tilling or turning over your soil is a good idea and an excellent opportunity to introduce some nutrient-rich compost or mulch once the soil is prepared. Test your soil pH and nutrient levels and know what kind of earth you are working with. Here in Celina, our clay soils can grow a variety of wonderful native and adapted varieties of plants, trees and shrubs.

One of the first things we recommend is to mix in expanded shale when planting. Our soil is dense and this helps to lighten and loosen it up. It also helps to capture water and hold it to give plant roots an opportunity to absorb the water.”

Julie enjoys sharing her excitement about gardening and landscaping with her customers. “There is so much to learn about gardening here, and we can walk our customers through every step. We can help you find the perfect plants for your home. Whether trees, shrubs or flowering plants, we have what you are looking for. Texas native plants are best, of course. They have a great success rate since they can be found growing wild locally. You can start to plan your garden with us. Perennials usually bloom in the summer and are great for your home. Most people don’t realize they are great for erosion control and foundation protection. I like to say that perennials take a nap when they go dormant and wake up by blooming.”

Some of the shrubs she recommends are Indian Hawthorne, sunshine ligustrum, and Texas sage. Texas ash and redbuds are some of her favorite trees. Planting in the spring is essential, according to her. “The sooner you can plant, the better. Getting the roots to start growing is important because we want the plants to be able to make it through our hot summers. We appreciate all of our customers. It is with great pleasure to announce the Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month as selected by the Celina Independent School District (CISD) Athletic Coaching Team. This month’s selection is Ethan Rucker.

Ethan is a senior at Celina High School (CHS) and a receiver on the Varsity Football team. Ethan started out playing flag football when he was 5 years old and moved on to tackle at the age of 7 years old. This year, Ethan set a new record for Bobcat receivers - five games with over one hundred yards receiving. In addition to this new record, Ethan also received many honors for his performance this year including First Team All District Receiver, All State Championship Team, First Team All State Receiver, and the THSC Super Elite Team.

Ethan would like to thank the coaches at CISD for believing in him and seeing his potential. He feels blessed to have been a part of the team and community. He thanks the community for their

support as well. He appreciates the support and guidance of every one of the coaches that have been a part of his journey. Ethan built really strong bonds with these coaches and is thankful for all the opportunities that have been given to him. They not only taught him how to work hard and be dedicated on the field but also how to be a leader in life.

In addition to playing football, Ethan also runs track in which he participates in the relays and long jump. When he is not competing, Ethan is working at The Forge and likes to fish and hang out with friends during time off. After graduation, Ethan will continue his football journey at Emporia State University. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for him! Congratulations to Ethan Rucker and his selection as the April Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month!

Ask anyone what initially drew them to Celina; nine times out of ten, the answer is the people and the feeling of community you get when shopping, dining, or attending an event on the square in Downtown Celina. Current residents and visitors to Celina are blessed with the foresight of the community founders, who established a rich historical legacy of farming families who raised wheat, cotton, corn, and livestock dating back to its founding in 1879.

Anthony Satarino, Executive Director of Celina’s Economic Development Corporation, shares, “In recent years, Downtown Celina has experienced significant revitalization, fueled by new development projects that have spurred the growth of small businesses and entrepreneurs. The influx of new residents has created an increased demand for services, driving the expansion of retail and service-oriented businesses.”

Lined with a mix of historic and new buildings, “The Square” is a central gathering place and entertainment hub for Celina residents and visitors alike. However, it is a sense of community that draws residents, new and old, to Celina. Being known for its tight-knit community, neighbors genuinely feel like family. Traci and Andrew Miller, owners of Terramania, a Boutique Inspired by Nature, opened their store on Pecan Street in 2022 because they wanted to “be in a community where they could be connected and connect with others. Natalie and Ryan Imhoff, owners of Celina’s Buff City Soap, opened in 2020 after remodeling a historic building on the south side of the square. They are passionate about bringing the community together and regularly host Birthday Parties, Ladies' nights, Bath Bomb Parties, Soap-Making Classes, Fundraisers, School Spirit Nights, Business Meetings, and community festivals in their Celina Store.  Apricot Lane Boutique owner, Jennifer Nairn, who opened her second store in Celina, says, “The community and the mission of Apricot Lane Boutique in Celina are well aligned. In 2019, Toasted Walnut Table and Market opened its doors on the square, offering a unique dining environment and food made with the freshest ingredients. The restaurant has grown and changed but remains a staple in the community. Audrea Weimer, co-owner with Amy and Brett Hager explained how businesses in the Downtown area collectively support the community through the schools and various charities and have aided residents who have experienced floods, fires, and tornados. As much as they want to grow a successful business, they are also committed to giving back to the community.

Audrea shared, “Our companies are in these old buildings we have lovingly restored. We are caretakers of our community's history. Today’s businesses, shops, and restaurants are the future of this community. When our kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids experience the Celina of the future, we want them to know we have invested well and nurtured Celina's spirit through this explosive season of growth.”

It takes a little more effort to shop and support the businesses in Downtown Celina. Parking is challenging for now; one-way streets and road construction can make it hard to navigate, but when you step into one of its Downtown businesses, you support the community's heart and soul. Celina is fortunate to have so many small business people invested in the community who support the vision of its citizens for the future. While Celina cannot stay a small farming town forever, in this one section, the Downtown corridor and square can continue to be that taste of both the past and the future.

As a business owner, I’ve found that efficiency and organization are critical to managing workload and leading teams. Over the years, I have tested over 100 different tools for managing my businesses. In doing so, I’ve implemented a basic set of tools that work together to streamline operations and communication and improve project management. But these tools aren’t just for business; several can be used to simplify your personal life, particularly Dropbox and Evernote. When used properly, these two tools alone can change how you organize your digital life.

1. EVERNOTE: YOUR DIGITAL NOTEBOOK

Evernote is my go-to tool for capturing ideas, meeting notes, and to-do lists. It’s like having an organized notebook that’s accessible anytime, anywhere.

Why I Use It:

Evernote helps me quickly jot down ideas and keep track of essential discussions or plans. Its robust search functionality lets me find notes from months ago in seconds. Although you can attach PDFs and other files to notes, I do not. I find Dropbox much better for organizing and storing files. When necessary, I simply link from Evernote to a stored file in Dropbox.

Best Features:

• It syncs across devices, so you always have access to your notes.

• Integration with other tools like Slack and Dropbox for seamless workflows.

• There are options to add attachments, links, and even voice recordings to your notes.

Pro-Tip: Pairing Evernote with the methodology outlined in David Allen’s book, Getting Things Done, skyrockets Evernote to a different dimension.

2. DROPBOX: YOUR DIGITAL FILING CABINET

Dropbox is the backbone of my document storage system. I use it to store digital copies of tangible items like contracts, project materials, and digital media assets.

Why I Use It:

It keeps all my critical files in one place and makes sharing with my team or external partners a breeze. Plus, it ensures that my documents are safe and backed up.

Best Features:

• Cloud-based storage that’s accessible from any device.

• Easy sharing and collaboration on files with team members.

Pro-Tip: So many come to mind that picking one is hard! I’ll start with this; Dropbox is your digital filing cabinet for essential files. Plan, plan, plan and then outline your folder structure on paper first, set it up, and stick to it. It shouldn’t take an act of Congress for you to add or edit your folder structure once you’ve started.

3. MONDAY.COM: YOUR PROJECT MANAGEMENT HUB

Managing multiple projects simultaneously can get chaotic, but Monday simplifies the process. This visual project management tool helps me keep tasks organized and deadlines on track.

Why I Use It:

Monday provides clarity for my entire team. Everyone knows what they’re responsible for, and we can easily track progress in real time.

Best Features:

• Customizable workflows and boards to fit any project.

• Automation that saves time on repetitive tasks.

• Insights and reports that help track performance and productivity.

Pro Tip: For this tool, I recommend hiring someone to help you get started or at least planning some time to immerse yourself in training videos. It’s very easy to find yourself fizzling out once you start only because you don't understand the depth and breadth of this feature-rich business tool.

4. SLACK: YOUR TEAM COMMUNICATION TOOL

Slack is the digital equivalent of a lively office environment, minus the interruptions. It’s the primary tool for interoffice communication in my business.

Why I Use It:

Slack organizes our conversations in one place, organizing them by channel for specific topics, projects, or teams. It minimizes email clutter and speeds up collaboration.

Best Features:

• Direct messaging and group channels.

• Integration with tools like Dropbox and Monday for instant updates and file sharing.

• Video calls and huddles for quick team discussions.

Pro-Tip: Use automation to eliminate repetitive tasks and keep your projects on track. Automating reminders, task assignments, or status updates can save you time and reduce errors.

5. UPWORK: YOUR ON-DEMAND TALENT POOL

Even with these incredible tools, there are times when I come across tasks that are outside my expertise or simply

require more time than I can dedicate. For those moments, Upwork is my go-to platform for finding skilled freelancers.

Why I Use It:

Upwork connects me with experts who can handle anything from graphic design to data analytics, allowing me to focus on my strengths. It is especially helpful for one-off projects or specialized tasks where adding an employee would not make sense.

Best Features:

• Access to a global pool of professionals with diverse skill sets.

• Flexible options for hiring hourly or by project.

• Tools for communication, tracking progress, and secure payment, all in one platform.

Pro-Tip: Clearly define your project scope and expectations upfront. This is critical for a successful experience. A detailed project description will help identify the right talent and ensure a smoother collaboration. The up-front investment in time to properly outline your objectives and deliverables will significantly increase your chances of success.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I encourage you to consider each of these tools seriously but don’t overwhelm yourself by attempting to implement them all at once. If I were to pick one to start with, it would be Dropbox, followed shortly thereafter by Evernote. I find these to be the foundation, and when combined and used correctly, they can create a powerful ecosystem that helps you stay organized, improve collaboration, and run your business more efficiently.

Pecan Creek Strawberry Farm In Pilot Point

Do you want a fun, family outdoor activity? It’s strawberry season, and Chris and Kylie Demases love it this time of year. Why? Because, with pun intended, they “love seeing the fruits of their labor,” they proudly say. As the owners of Pecan Creek Strawberry Farm, the Demases wait all year for strawberry season, happening right now.

Pecan Creek Strawberry Farm, located in Pilot Point, is a fifth-generation family-owned farm where customers can pick delicious, beautiful strawberries. The popular farm often has long lines and frequently sells out of strawberries,

so don’t wait to join in on all the fun. In addition to the strawberries, the farm also sells homemade jam and strawberry lemonade.

Chris Demases grew up farming Texas produce year-round. One year, the Demases hosted a pop-up stand of pre-picked strawberries at Chris’ family farm on the side of the road, causing a major traffic jam and thus generating a “big lightbulb moment.” Chris and Kylie decided to plant and focus an entire strawberry farm on the backside of their Pilot Point property behind a body of water named Pecan Creek, ergo, the farm's name. The plants are rooted in October and tended for all fall and winter, waiting for the ripening season’s arrival. “Seeing families, friends, and customers come to our farm with their baskets enjoying themselves picking

berries is the absolute best,” says Kylie Demases. “We love watching the returning customers and their family traditions, memories, and milestones. It just brings us so much joy,” she continues. Strawberry season is limited. Once the strawberries are gone, they are gone. Parking is free, but you are required to purchase a reusable bucket. The farm opens at 10 am and closes when they sell out. It’s first come, first served with no picking limit, but it's also not guaranteed. DIRECTION 61:3

AGING OUT FOSTER YOUTH THRIVING AS ADULTS

Direction 61:3 is a faith-based program focused on helping young people in foster care transition into thriving adults. Established in 2017 and later licensed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Direction 61:3 engages foster youth who are aging out of the foster care system by addressing life skills, career preparation, and building and maintaining lasting relationships. Working through a series of programs, staff assists the young adults with career placement, negotiating affordable housing, and owning their first car. Creating a village of support for participants is imperative to the mission and building relationships with youth prior to aging out is important for their success in the next stages of life. The goal is

for youth 14-24 to discover God’s specific purpose for their lives while being supported through Direction 61:3’s programs.

Founded through relationships at a local church, leaders set out to address the “invisible” population of aged–out foster youth.  At the age of 18, foster children are no longer under the care of the state and make up 38% of homeless people in Texas. Direction 61:3’s first residential property, Oak Creek Place, was donated in 2017 and began to operate by offering a home environment with foster parents and volunteers. Today, as the need for residential care has increased, Direction 61:3 operates 8 homes spread across Denton, McKinney, Fairview, and Whitewright and can house 26 youth.

Direction 61:3 has acquired almost 5 acres of land called “The Farm” where a greater number of youth can be ministered to. Located near Myers Park in McKinney and in Celina ISD, The Farm is an $8.5 million project to build 17 homes including seven tiny homes with 2 bedrooms for older and independent young adults.  Younger kids will live in 4- or 6-bedroom homes with fulltime foster parents. The community will include a barn-event center, pickle ball courts, coffee shop, market, automobile shop, and an outside amphitheater. The event center and amphitheater will be available for community rentals and will provide large spaces for outdoor concerts and Sunday morning church services. The teens and young adults will staff the community center and on-site businesses.

Myron Wilson, the Executive Director of Direction 61:3, shares  “We turn down 4 to 6 youth per week. The more homes we can build, the more kids we can take care of, and the more kids we can save. We try to provide a home for kids who have been abandoned, abused, trafficked, and left unprotected”. Supporting the Launch a Legacy Capital Campaign can help transform the lives of some of the 1,200 foster care children that age out every year.

Direction 61:3 aims to be a family whose primary goal is to establish permanent belonging for all residents. All residents are considered family and are encouraged to engage in ongoing initiatives even once they leave the program. Residents are exposed to the culture of a healthy family through education, setting and achieving goals in the Kingdom Cars program, the supportive relationships of THRIVE, and special events like excursions to Rangers baseball games. A snapshot of some of these programs include:

Education Direction 61:3 focused on the facilitation of practical and academic skills.  Through partnerships with local colleges, trade schools, and businesses, each resident will have the support and resources needed to establish and pursue their career goals. Instructive services will include life skills training, tutoring, mentorships, and peer interaction. Opportunities for on-thejob training will be available in certain situations through local business partners.

Kingdom Cars is a program where cars or designated funds are donated to Direction 61:3 and the Kingdom Cars team prepares the vehicles for youth enrolled in the Kingdom Cars program. Once the youth have learned how to acquire a license, the car buying process, purchasing insurance, the understanding of car maintenance, etc.,  a car is awarded

to them with a contractual agreement to remain in the program for an additional year. The car enables the participant to gain further independence and security.

THRIVE is a weekly gathering that incorporates professional volunteers and leaders to provide opportunities for life skills training, mentoring, tutoring, spiritual teaching and study, and a fellowship meal. The group comes together as a Direction Family to enjoy dinner supplied by local businesses, church groups, or neighbors, that creates an environment of security and safety.

All programs are established on these core values:

• Family environment that promotes love and acceptance without judgment

• The realization of individual strengths and the celebration of goals attained

• A deep sense of belonging that permeates the life of every young woman

• The opportunity for young men and women to embrace and live in everlasting faith and relationship with Jesus Christ

As the temperatures rise, your HVAC system becomes essential for maintaining comfort in your home. A properly maintained HVAC system ensures efficiency, lower energy bills, and a longer lifespan for your equipment. George Kendrick, owner of KMI A/C & Heating for over twenty years, shares some crucial tips and tricks to make sure your HVAC system is ready for the summer heat.

1. CHANGE OR CLEAN THE AIR FILTERS

Air filters play a crucial role in ensuring proper airflow and indoor air quality. Over time, they can become clogged, reducing efficiency and making your system work harder. Replace disposable filters every 1-3 months or clean reusable filters regularly.

2. CHECK AND CLEAN AIR DUCTS

If your ducts are clogged with dust or debris, airflow can be restricted, making your system work harder. Consider having your air ducts professionally cleaned every few years, especially if you notice reduced airflow or excessive dust buildup in your home.

3. INSPECT AND CLEAN THE OUTDOOR UNIT

The condenser unit (outdoor component of your A/C system) can accumulate dirt, leaves, and debris over time, which can hinder its performance. To improve efficiency:

• Remove any debris around the unit.

• Trim plants or bushes at least two feet away from the condenser.

• Use a garden hose to wash off dirt buildup on the fins and coils gently.

4. CHECK REFRIGERANT LEVELS

Low refrigerant levels can reduce cooling efficiency and may indicate a leak in your system. If your A/C isn’t cooling as it should or you notice ice on the refrigerant lines, contact a professional to check and refill the refrigerant if necessary.

5. INSPECT AND CLEAN EVAPORATOR AND CONDENSER COILS

Have you ever pieced together an outfit for a special event or placed a collection of items on a shelf and then stood back and found that the pieces you pulled together totally worked or completely did not work? I used to think that I either needed a whole lot of talent or a bit of luck when it came to styling something beautifully. Turns out, there is no talent or luck about it at all. It all starts with a math formula. This formula is known as The Golden Ratio of 1.618. Discovered in the ancient world by mathematicians, this pattern can be found all over in the world of nature. This ratio creates patterns that can be found on the spines of a pinecone, seeds on a sunflower head, spirals on seashells, even the human form, to name only a few. And our eyes love to see it. Why our eyes like this particular pattern may remain a mystery but how to achieve it is no mystery at all. Fashion designers, interior designers, architects, photographers and artists have all been using this formula for centuries in order to achieve visually appealing compositions. And so can you!

LET’S MAKE A VIGNETTE!

In interior styling, a vignette is a small, curated collection of objects grouped together to create a smaller picture within a larger space in a room. Chances are, at some point you’ve put together a vignette without knowing it was one. What makes the difference between a purposefully styled vignette and a cluttered collection is all in the composition. The composition is most appealing when this amazing Golden Ratio is applied.

To get started on styling a vignette, first decide on the space you’ll place it. It could be an empty shelf, bedside table, or coffee table. Next, collect a few of your very favorite things that could be styled there. These objects could be a few books, a vase with flowers, a candle, a small clock, a plant, a few apples, the list is endless. Now that you have your space and objects to style, it’s time to assemble your vignette.

Where To Place Objects

In grid form, the Golden Ratio shows designers exactly where to place the most important objects in the composition for the greatest visual appeal. Known as Phi, this grid splits the space that you’re working with into thirds vertically and horizontally. Place the most important objects on the correlation grid lines. Even better, place on the points where the lines intersect. This will be more appealing to the eye than if the important objects are in the center of the frame or far to the sides.

In number form, the Golden Ratio helps us to know how many items to use when styling a vignette. This form is known as the Fibonacci Sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc.). The sequence grows as it adds together the prior two numbers to get a new number (for example, 3+5=8 and 5+8=13, etc) and repeats. Amazingly, all the numbers that you achieve by doing this are the exact same numbers of petals that are found on flowers. How amazing is that! To apply to styling a vignette, choose a number in the Fibonacci Sequence for the number of items you will use to style. Typically 3 or 5 objects work great for small vignettes.

The eye loves to see odd numbers. Odd numbers stop our brain from categorizing items into pairs which are less visually interesting. When styling a vignette, build a triangle shape of 3 points with the objects you are styling. To achieve this, vary the heights of objects to make a stepping down effect. If your items are of similar height then use books or a small object to lift one higher so that it appears taller than the others. To start, place the tallest piece in the back, medium piece in front and slightly to the side of the tall piece, then the smallest piece in front to create a stepping down effect. The Golden Triangle has angles of 72 and 36 degrees but any triangle here will do!
