Chasing the Sun

There’s something about July that calls us outdoors— to soak up the sunshine, gather with friends, and remember that life is best lived unhurried.

This month’s Summer Fun issue is a celebration of summer at its finest. I’m especially excited to share a personal story close to my heart: a look back at my childhood memories on Center Hill Lake. Those days were simple and sweet—boat rides under blue skies, cannonballs off the dock, grilled meals shared with laughter and sunkissed cheeks. Lake life taught me early on the value of slowing down, unplugging, and letting the water wash away the noise of the world.

It’s a rhythm we could all use a little more of I believe.

So whether your idea of summer joy is casting a line at sunrise, sipping something cold on the patio, dining al fresco under the stars, traveling with family or simply chasing fireflies with the kids—this issue is for you. Inside, you’ll find beautiful ways to explore in style with your family, a delicious BBQ recipe and frozen treats around town you should test out, a local resource for fresh veggies, and even ways to glow smart this summer with new cosmetics from The Refinery we love.

Let this be your reminder to step outside, recharge, and embrace the slower pace that summer so kindly offers.

Here’s to sunshine and soul rest!

January Shares Memories Growing Up on Center Hill Lake

ARTICLE BY LINDSEY HICKMAN & JANUARY ALEXANDER

For our publisher January Alexander, some of life’s sweetest memories were made dockside, cruising calm waters, or laughing with family on a houseboat at Center Hill Marina and Yacht Club. With decades of cherished moments spent on Center Hill Lake— first as a child and now as a mom—January reflects on the timeless magic of lake life, the power of storytelling, and why those sun-soaked summers continue to shape her work and worldview. From bologna sandwiches to Alan Jackson sightings, join us as she shares her heart for the water and the community that made it unforgettable.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR EARLIEST OR MOST VIVID MEMORIES OF SPENDING SUMMERS AT CENTER HILL LAKE?

My parents raised my three sisters and I on the lake… several actually, since we live near many great lakes, but Center Hill Lake

(CHL) has always been my favorite. We had a houseboat at Center Hill Marina and Yacht Club (CHM) for almost 20 years, so you can imagine lots of weekends and summer fun was had there. I remember beach combing for treasures, crates of food Mom packed for us to grill and snack on, and that feeling you get as the boat first takes off. The breeze, the sunshine, the music playing—just that overwhelming feeling summer had arrived. My parents were big entertainers, so our boat was always full of friends and family making the laughs, the fellowship, and the fun priceless.

WHAT DID A TYPICAL SUMMER DAY AT THE MARINA LOOK LIKE FOR YOU GROWING UP?

It started with early morning sounds—ducks quacking, fish jumping, footsteps on the dock. The lake doesn't allow for sleeping in. Everyone’s up early. The morning fog on the water was always beautiful. I loved the slight morning chill and the calm of dawn. Mom would cook us a huge CONTINUED >

breakfast—she owned a catering business—so we’d eat and then beg my Dad to hit the water to kneeboard, cruise, tube, and explore. She packed thick-cut bologna sandwiches, Fritos, French onion dip, Cokes, and watermelon. We loved cruising by Alan Jackson’s house, hoping to see him... Mom adored his music. Funny story—he often came to The Coppertop restaurant at CHM and would say hello. He drove this little wooden boat called Chattahoochee and once even gave my mom a small wooden replica of it. I still have it displayed in my bathroom.

WAS THERE A SPOT ON THE LAKE THAT FELT LIKE YOUR HAPPY PLACE  OR HELD A SPECIAL TRADITION?

CHL always settled my nerves and was an escape. The water comforts me, and I see

the same in my son. Center Hill Marina was special for us, as was Goo Goo Cove off the river in Lebanon. We’d gather there with family and friends—music, food, laughter, swimming. Another special place is my fiancé Scott’s family cabin in the Ozarks. It’s peaceful and reminds me a lot of CHL.

HOW HAVE THOSE SUMMER EXPERIENCES SHAPED HOW YOU VIEW COMMUNITY, NATURE, OR EVEN YOUR WORK AS OUR PUBLISHER?

Hugely. Growing up on the lake—tying boats together, socializing, sharing meals—created a deep sense of community. It feels like home. I also loved listening quietly to my mom and her friends—their stories, laughter, struggles. I never wanted to play with other kids as much as I wanted to hear the adults talk. That love

for stories and connection definitely shaped who I am today as a publisher. I find joy in helping others share their voice.

TELL US ABOUT HOW YOUR LAKE ADVENTURES CHANGED OVER THE YEARS.

My sisters and lots of girlfriends tagged along together on lake weekends as teens, we also loved the lake and being together. Those experiences were so fun and special that I carry them on with our own kids—boating, fishing, and exploring the gifts of being outdoors and on the water. Now that I’m a mom and bonus mom, I love spending time on the lake and sharing those childhood stories. I think getting kids on the water early is great for them. They learn about nature, boating, wildlife, and water safety—but most importantly, they make priceless memories.

DO YOU STILL GET OUT ON THE LAKE NOW, AND IF SO, WHAT’S DIFFERENT—AND STILL THE SAME—ABOUT CENTER HILL MARINA TODAY?

Absolutely—as much as we can. We bought another boat a couple of years ago and go to CHM often. It still feels the same to me—even after 40 years— but it also has so many great updates. New cabins, a new ship store, upgraded rentals and amenities... Growing up we would gas up and get supplies at the marina and we would eat dinner at the old dock restaurant called The Coppertop. Now I'm taking my family to Center Hill Marina's newly renovated Mexican food restaurant, El Lago, so it's a full circle memory.

Each year, it gets better.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO FAMILIES ABOUT MAKING LASTING SUMMER MEMORIES TOGETHER—ON OR OFF THE WATER?

Be present. Take videos, capture moments, unplug. Be adventurous, be a kid, be free. These are the good old days—live them.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE READERS TO KNOW?

I’m so grateful for partnerships like ours with Center Hill Marina and Yacht Club. Reconnecting with them as an adult and working with them now is really special and full circle for me. They offer so many incredible ways for families to have fun...pontoon rentals, cabin rentals, houseboat rentals, a great shipstore, restaurant and place to visit. A dock for a kid can be a great childhood memory and I am so grateful for mine. Our kids, I hope, will cherish their memories we are building as well.  I love sharing local places and experiences for our readers to enjoy, too. We are truly blessed CHM is just right down the road from Lebanon...a pretty drive full of fun ahead. I hope to see you all on the lake this summer visiting our friends at CHM. Book that cabin, you won't regret it!

DIGGING DEEP

SUMMER GARDENING TIPS FROM A LOCAL FAMILY GROWING WITH A PURPOSE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KENDAL MILLER

When Alex and Shené Scott planted their first seeds over a decade ago, they had no idea they were laying the foundation for something far bigger than a backyard garden. What began as a way to support their son’s health after a Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis has grown into a mission— one rooted in wellness, education, and a deep love for their community.

Today, the Scott family—alongside kids Kirra and Alex Jr.—is cultivating more than produce at A & S Farm, just outside Lebanon. They’re growing connection, knowledge, and access. “We wanted space to grow food not just for ourselves, but for others,” Shené says. “This farm gives us the opportunity to serve the community while also supporting our nonprofit, Vine Branch Fellowship (VBF).”

The Scotts' journey started small—raised beds, tower gardens, and a dream. Now, their farm features a hoop house, greenhouse, herb and fruit gardens, and even a cheerful flock of chickens. A & S Farm is where you’ll find seasonal heirloom produce, fresh from the soil, grown with care and no chemicals.

But it’s the educational work through VBF that sets their mission apart. From school gardens and classroom towers to BeHealthy Kids Summer Gardening Camp at Fiddlers Grove, their impact reaches every generation. “We want kids to know where their food comes from,” Alex says. “Gardening is hands-on, healthy, and fun.”

GARDENING IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE: TIPS FOR OUR ZONE 7B

If you’re gardening in Lebanon, you’re in luck—our long growing season offers a bounty of opportunities. Here are three summer-smart tips from the Scotts:

• Know Your Sunlight  Some crops love full sun, while others need partial shade. Be sure your plant is in its preferred light zone for maximum growth.

• Water with Intention In our warm summers, soil can dry quickly. Keep seeds and new plants moist at the surface so roots establish well—but avoid overwatering.

• Test Your Soil  Healthy soil is the key to healthy plants. Get your soil tested through UT/TSU Extension to understand what nutrients you may need to add.

“Gardening is what we love—growing food and growing community go hand in hand for us.”

Their advice for July planting? Try kale, beets, radishes, lettuce, or collards—all great fall crops that thrive when planted now and harvested before frost.

Want to support their work? Stop by the farm at 653 Jennings Pond Road for weekend produce sales Saturdays 10a–2p, Sundays 1–5pm, and follow their growing journey on Facebook (A & S Farm) and Instagram @raisedbedfarming.

FIREFLIES AND FRONT PORCHES

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDSEY HICKMAN

EXPLORING WILSON COUNTY HOSPITALITY WITH YOUR LCL EDITOR

Summer is the perfect time to explore our bountiful region. Quick staycations, family in to visit, or couples looking to reconnect can find countless options, and we found one for the top of your list. Whether you’re watching a summer thunderstorm or fireflies dancing in the expansive meadow, Kellie and Kenny’s farm stay off Cole’s Ferry is a picturesque place to stay. With a firepit on the balcony overlooking the lake and field where deer gather and frolic, as well as a cozy covered porch swing, it doesn’t matter what unpredictable weather comes your way—no matter the reason for your visit.

As someone who has stayed at more than 25 Airbnb properties in the past two years, I can attest that this barndominium was furnished with comfort in mind. It’s no wonder this listing has nearly 60 perfect five-star reviews. Instead of skimping on decor, Kellie has chosen pieces you’d want in your own home—oversized sofas, a king-sized memory foam bed, plush throw blankets, and thoughtful extras throughout.

But this wasn’t always the plan. Kellie and Kenny bought their 18-acre property in 2016 after spotting it on Zillow. Back then, they lived in a 1934 home in downtown Lebanon and didn’t know they were both secretly browsing for land. While on a flight to Austin, the truth came out—and as soon as they returned, they toured this plot backing up to Old Hickory Lake. “We honestly didn’t look at any other land,” Kellie says. “It just felt like home the moment we drove down the long, winding driveway.”

They sold their house in town and started building a barn to live in temporarily. With no kids yet and no strict timeline for building their future home, the barn offered a simple, serene space—and the couple did much of the labor themselves, memories captured in a photo memory coffee table book, moving

in March 2017. Their daughter Madison was born the following year, and with the help of Stewart Knowles Construction, by December 2019 they were moving into their newly built home.

At first, the barn was reserved for family visits, but that changed in July 2021 when Kellie listed it on Airbnb. It booked instantly and hasn’t slowed down since. The majority of guests are couples looking for peace and quiet, some traveling from as far away as California. There have also been music videos filmed here by country stars Dylan Scott and Noah Thompson, along with stays by travel nurses and even locals seeking a staycation.

Their story is rooted in Lebanon, where Kellie was born and raised. She played collegiate golf at Samford University before earning her nurse practitioner degree from Vanderbilt. Kenny moved from Louisiana to Lebanon as a child, eventually playing football at Cumberland University. The couple met one summer while Kellie was home from college and married in 2013. Now parents to three young children (ages 2, 5, and 6), they still find time to travel, play golf and tennis, and enjoy life on the lake.

Their professional lives evolved in tandem with their personal journey. Kenny left his job as a teacher and coach to earn his real estate license in 2017. Kellie followed after a brief return to nursing post-motherhood. By 2023, she had earned her broker’s license, and together they founded Sallis Realty Group, based in the historic Lebanon Square. Alongside their growing team, they’ve renovated several downtown buildings and invested in real estate projects ranging from flips to longand short-term rentals.

Their Airbnb portfolio now includes five properties: a renovated beach house on Florida’s 30A, a Center Hill Lake home, a Lebanon Lake House, a riverfront condo in downtown Nashville, and of course—the original barn. Their approach? Buy where they love to spend time and find properties that need work to build equity from the start.

But for Kellie, it’s never just about the investment. “Hosting allows me to blend my two passions: travel and beautiful homes,” she says. “I love helping guests plan the details of their trip—where to eat, what to do. I always told Kenny my dream was to be a travel agent and a realtor. In a way, I get to do both.”

Guests celebrating special occasions often arrive to find a bottle of wine or s’mores kits waiting. Families with children are greeted with bubbles and goldfish crackers. These small touches speak to Kellie’s heart for hospitality and her joy in creating spaces where others can slow down and reconnect.

Whether you're planning a last-minute escape or searching for a serene space to reconnect with nature, the Sallis family's farm stay offers more than just a place to sleep—it’s a little slice of Tennessee peace, thoughtfully prepared and waiting to welcome you.

WHERE ROAD Trips Begin

SUMMER FAMILY FUN IN A BATES FORD

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY BATES FORD

When it comes to making the most of summer, there’s nothing quite like packing up and hitting the open road. Whether it’s a weekend getaway to the lake or a cross-country adventure, choosing the right vehicle can make all the difference. At Bates Ford in Lebanon, Sales Manager Billy Mullinax says Ford has families covered—combining comfort, technology, and capability for unforgettable road trips.

Two of his top picks? The Ford Explorer and Ford Expedition.

“These models offer incredible seating and cargo space, powerful towing capabilities, and cutting-edge technology,” Mullinax explains. “They’re built to handle family adventures with ease.”

Both SUVs feature Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system, available rear-seat entertainment, and multiple USB ports to keep everyone connected and entertained. For parents, Ford Co-Pilot360 provides peace of mind with features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

But Ford doesn’t stop at function—it’s about making the ride enjoyable. “Families love the smooth ride quality, optional adaptive suspension, and smart storage throughout,” Mullinax adds. “You’re traveling in comfort, even on the long haul.”

As families prioritize versatility, Ford continues to evolve— offering hybrid and plug-in models, Wi-Fi hotspots, and flexible seating configurations. “It’s about giving families room to grow, move, and make memories.”

Bates Ford has been proudly serving Lebanon since 2008 and recently opened a state-of-the-art facility with expanded amenities, pickup & delivery, and mobile service for maximum convenience. “We make it easy for customers near and far to buy the perfect vehicle,” Mullinax says. “Just be honest about your goals and let our team do the rest.”

And don’t forget the Bates Ford motto, “We’ll trade for anything that don’t eat!”

This summer, the road is calling. And at Bates Ford, the ride to fun begins with the perfect Ford fit for your family.

Glow Smart This Summer

At The Refinery, skin health is never an afterthought—it’s the foundation of beauty. That’s why their latest skincare and makeup offering, Colorescience, is a game-changer for summer routines. This dermatologist-recommended, mineral-based line is designed to protect and perfect at the same time— without compromise.

“We’re always looking for smart, safe, effective products that align with our mission,” co-owner of The Refinery, Annie White shares. “Colorescience stood out because of its clean ingredients and science-backed formulations that blur the line between skincare and makeup.”

It’s a perfect fit for summer, when sun protection is essential but beauty routines often get scaled down. Colorescience products—like their tinted mineral sunscreens—offer broad-spectrum SPF with skin-loving ingredients like antioxidants, peptides, and hydrators. The result? A radiant

finish that shields against UV rays, pollution, and environmental stressors.

“Summer can be tough on your skin,” she explains, “This line doesn’t just cover— it cares. You get clinical-grade protection and correction in one beautiful formula.”

Unlike over-the-counter makeup and sunscreens, Colorescience is medical-grade—meaning higher concentrations of active ingredients, fewer fillers, and real results. Whether your goal is preventing premature aging, calming redness, or evening skin tone, there’s a targeted product ready to work with your skin, not against it.

“We believe beauty and skin health are inseparable,” Annie adds. “With Colorescience, we’re giving our clients something that’s as intentional and unique as they are.”

MILES OF MEMORIES

There’s something special about summer on the open road—rolling pastures, campfire sunsets, and waking up wherever your heart leads. At National Indoor RV Centers (NIRVC) in Lebanon, that spirit is brought to life through a one-of-a-kind luxury RV experience grounded in passion, service, and community.

Mike Drudge, RV Lifestyle Specialist and longtime RVer, knows the road well. “My wife and I have been RVing for over 25 years—we’ve owned just about every type of coach,” he says. “So when I work with

customers, I’m not just selling—I’m sharing what I’ve lived and loved.” That personal touch is the heartbeat of NIRVC, where every sales associate carries the title “RV Lifestyle Specialist,” and helping families find the right coach is the top priority.

But NIRVC’s local roots run even deeper. The company’s owner lives full-time in a Class A motorhome himself, and his passion for the RV lifestyle is matched by his commitment to community and customer-first values. Headquartered in Dallas, NIRVC chose Lebanon

Luxury RV Life with National Indoor RV Centers in Lebanon

as one of its newest locations for good reason—Middle Tennessee offers a rich blend of Southern hospitality, outdoor beauty, and fast-growing RV interest.

Since opening, NIRVC has jumped headfirst into community engagement—sponsoring the Tennessee State Fair, providing mobile support for events like the Iroquois Steeplechase, and even offering free coffee and donuts at local campgrounds to introduce more people to RVing.

Their Lebanon facility is not only a showroom—it’s a hub of support, offering full service, repairs, indoor storage, and concierge-style trip prep through their “launch pad” service. Whether you're gearing up for a weekend at Center Hill Lake or planning a cross-country adventure, your coach is ready—washed, prepped, and waiting.

And if you’re lucky enough to join the NIRVC family, you’ll gain access to their AIM Club, a national RV rally experience with all-inclusive events, excursions, and entertainment—making lifelong memories with fellow RV enthusiasts.

“We believe the journey should be just as exciting as the destination,” Drudge says. “And we’re proud to bring that philosophy—and this lifestyle—to Lebanon.”

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.

A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.

SOMETHING SWEET

This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.

SOMETHING TANGY

Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.

SOMETHING SPICY

This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.

SOMETHING LIQUID

It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.

SOMETHING TOMATO

You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.

THE SPICE COMBINATION

This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.

HOMEMADE

BBQ SAUCE

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups ketchup

• 1 cup water

• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

• 5 tablespoons brown sugar

• 5 tablespoons sugar

• 1/2 tablespoon  black pepper

• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder

• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard

• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

DIRECTIONS

In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.
