The Kids & Pets Issue

Start shaping your child’s future!

Kids today have a plethora of opportunities to get involved in, from early childhood playdates to after-school programs including organized sports. Activities contribute to healthy social skills, friendships, personal development, and new skill sets. By staying engaged outdoors and indoors, children of any age can foster a love for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, setting in motion the idea of keeping active for the rest of their lives.

Pets can also play a significant role in our children’s lives, offering companionship, teaching responsibility, and providing unconditional love. From traditional pets like puppies and goldfish to more unique ones like chickens, horses, and longhorn steer, kids today have the chance to learn about many different animals, their lifestyles and habitats, and how to care for them. Pets enrich the lives of their owners in many ways, making them a beloved part of the household, while offering our children a chance to see if life around these endearing animals is their field of dreams.

If your child’s future desires include becoming a chef, let them start developing their skills with the Little Kitchen Academy. Or if they want to bake, Regina at Noble Delights Bakery will be happy to let them apprentice with her and showcase their talents. Perhaps fashion is in their future, so consider checking out Austin School of Fashion Design’s Academy for Young Designers, where they can really get creative. And for those more daring and bold at this youthful age, explore the field of aeronautics and experience what it is like to become a pilot by taking a ride into the skies with the EAA and the Young Eagles Flight School!

We hope our Kids & Pets Issue will give your family a glimpse of what the future may hold for your youngsters. Whatever their desires, let them start today!

As we dip back into the school year, we hope you have an amazing end to this summer! There is still plenty of sunshine in Cedar Park, so enjoy August for all it’s worth.

And remember, you’re never too old to start something new yourself! Pursue your dreams!

I’ll see you around town!

TAKE TO THE SKIES

Nearly 2,384,000. That’s the number of youth ages eight to 17 who had taken part in the Young Eagles program as of June.

The only program of its kind, Young Eagles has spent over three decades conducting flights, offering STEM activities, and teaching aircraft building and restoration. Across the nation, you will find Young Eagles chapters of aviation enthusiasts who aim to inspire the next generation of pilots. This is all thanks to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), an organization that supports affordable pathways to aviation.

“I grew up in a big city with few financial resources and certainly no hope of getting in a big airplane, never mind a small one,” says José Soltren, President of EAA Chapter 1607 in Lago Vista. “Doing Young Eagles is a way to give back, to pay the favor forward. I try to bring a fresh perspective and fresh attention to our events.”

No matter whether you attend an event in Lago Vista, Georgetown, Rockdale, or beyond… The most important thing to the coordinators and pilots is to give a fun but educational experience that Young Eagles will remember for the rest of their lives.

Chapters like Soltren’s are run by groups of volunteers who work to demystify general aviation. This means making flight more understandable and accessible, while sharing how small airports across the country contribute to search and rescue, patient transport, and so much more.

“Pilots are often looking for opportunities to increase public awareness and opinion of small planes, and to fly missions that are a little outside of the norm to expand their skills. As an airplane owner, when EAA 1607 put out a call for volunteer pilots, I thought this would be a great way to share my hobby

Watch your kids and teens discover the spirit of aviation with Central Texas Young Eagles chapters

and my airplane with young people,” says Soltren. “I’ve flown something like a dozen Young Eagles flights.”

During these flights, Soltren notes that passengers will often ask questions through the headsets or simply be quiet. However, an experience that has especially stuck with him was when three siblings, boys ages eight, 10, and 12, were on board. The wonder and amazement in their voices as they talked amongst themselves, pointing out landmarks and trying to find their house, made a special impression on him.

For every Young Eagles participant, whether that be a prospective pilot or a professional volunteer, there is a lot to gain from the program. While they all come from different backgrounds, these aviators share a common passion for the skies.

“Flying is not like anything else. I would come with an ‘empty cup,’ expecting to learn,” says Soltren. “We always want people to feel that the flight should have been just a little longer instead of just a little shorter. We want them to come back and bring their friends. We want them to fly for us one day!”

Are your children interested in tasting the freedom of flight? Head to eaa.org to read more about what you can expect from the Young Eagles program and find the right chapter for your family.

Your Young Eagles coordinator wants to know…

• What grade are you in at school?

• Are you excited about math or science?

• Do you have goals of becoming a pilot one day?

BAKING Dreams INTO Reality

Make your child’s experience with baking a cut above the rest with custom desserts from Noble Delights Bakery

When Regina Noble first transformed her baking hobby into a business, she kept creating sweet treats from her home. In July 2023, she opened her storefront, marking a tremendous milestone. A year later, Noble Delights Bakery is going strong.

For about eight years, Regina has shared her passion for dessert artistry with our community. Growing up, baking served as therapy for her, and she thrived in the kitchen where her imagination soared. Today, when faced with off-menu requests like Swedish princess cakes or German buttercream, she excites in taking her work to the next level.

Regina also enjoys imparting her industry knowledge to young adults. Partnering with the Texas Workforce Commission and their SEAL program, Leander ISD’s LIVE program, and Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, Noble Delights Bakery offers students valuable workforce experience.

“We love mentoring and helping students achieve their dreams, or being a stepping stone toward achieving their dreams,” says Regina. “They get to delve into hands-on experience, from the day-to-day operations of an actual bakery to experimenting with different kinds of cakes and decorating techniques.”

Although every cake starts with looking for inspirational photos and discussing what someone is looking for, doing so with kids is particularly special to Regina. With designs ranging anywhere from Alice in Wonderland to dinosaurs to unicorns, it’s incredible for her to see children engage in the process, drawing concepts to be turned into completely custom 3D versions.

“Kids are into so many different TV and internet shows, books, and video games. It keeps us on our toes with researching the cake design subjects,” says Regina. “When the parent brings the child along to pick up the cake and I see their positive reaction, it warms my heart. There’s a piece of my heart that I put into each design.”

Whether your occasion is big or small, Noble Delights Bakery has you covered with customized confections that are sure to bring the party! Request a quote online at nobledelightsbakery.com or head over to 2091 N US Hwy 183 Suite B, Leander.

Where Fashion Futures Begin

Austin School of Fashion Design is renowned for teaching the art of garment creation. But beyond technical skills, ASFD’s dynamic classes and caring instructors guide young minds through the entire fashion process.

When designer Ilonka Soto-Pelyvas moved to Austin in 2010, she was captivated by how much the city burst with creativity. With music ever-present in the air, Soto-Pelyvas found her new home to be fun and cosmopolitan, the perfect place to evolve her fashion career.

“I hardly believed back then that Austin was in Texas,” says SotoPelyvas. “I got myself involved with all opportunities to showcase my creative work as a designer—Art Bra, Fashionably Austin Pink Runway Show,

“BE REALISTIC ABOUT HOW MUCH WORK AND DEDICATION YOU NEED TO PUT INTO THIS, BORN IDEALLY FROM A GENUINE PASSION.”

Austin Fashion Week, and many other nonprofits and private clients. From there, my adventure started.”

Almost nine years ago, Soto-Pelyvas was proud to take over as owner and director of ASFD. Fueled by her own experiences from time spent in the world of fashion design, she has continued to emphasize to her students the importance of recognizing how hard work goes a long way in gaining success.

“The young children especially will experience an exciting journey from becoming best friends with the sewing machine to walking the runway showcasing their first creations. They get acquainted with fashion sketching, the designing process, cutting, and even pattern making,” says Soto-Pelyvas. “It’s a complete experience that helps them discover their passion.”

Whether a child enrolls in the intensive Academy for Young Designers program or attends a class for their birthday party, ASFD offers a nurturing environment where imagination can flourish.

Observing the success stories of students who started their fashion careers at ASFD is deeply fulfilling for Soto-Pelyvas. Some of those students now pursue their dreams at prestigious fashion schools in London and New York City. Others hold fashion jobs across the United States and Europe.

“A solid foundation and a calling discovered as a child has paved an exciting professional career for these young individuals,” says Soto-Pelyvas. “One extremely touching thing is to see my first Academy for Young Designers kids from when I just started the program in 2016 graduating from high school this year. It’s a milestone that shows me what a big part of the Austin community our school has become.”

Launch your backyard chicken farm project with Chicken Tenders ATX

Growing up near her grandparents’ dairy goat farm, Chelsea Combs gained a practical perspective on the natural world. That experience equipped her to teach her own children about the values of gardening and how the food web affects everything in life.

Hands-on farming was made difficult by living in a neighborhood, but after a chicken-keeping class in Austin, Chelsea and her husband, Patrick, decided to start their backyard brood. Now, the Combses assist others in constructing their perfect coops through Chicken Tenders ATX.

“I love helping families learn how to build a more sustainable world right in their own backyard,” says Chelsea. “Everyone can learn so much about nature and connecting with the earth by having a few chickens. It doesn’t have to be a whole lot of land and a farm.”

Chelsea occasionally brings chickens to schools to educate students on that aforementioned sustainability. She explains that chickens help with food waste, go hand-inhand with composting, and reduce problematic insects.

This knowledge translates into her business, working with city dwellers to foster their farm-living dreams. With every coop project the Combses navigate, they show families what it takes to care for creatures who provide for us.

“An amazing part of my job is meeting the other chicken people of the world,” says Chelsea. “I must say, honestly, I’ve never met a ‘chicken person’ I didn’t like!”

Tender Loving Care

“I love the idea of children understanding where their food comes from, both eggs and chickens. Although we don’t eat our chickens because they are our pets, the chicken comes from somewhere!”

From planning to budgeting to choosing the right chicks, Chicken Tenders ATX guides you from the very beginning as you develop a bond with your “gals” (and roosters). But they also provide chicken sitting through CombsCare, ensuring your flock stays healthy and happy while you’re away. Let’s Cook Up Confidence

ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LITTLE KITCHEN ACADEMY

A more educated, capable, and healthy society—that’s what Little Kitchen Academy strives for. In part, they accomplish this by sharing over 900 recipes, such as fan favorites like seasonal kolache and pineapple fried forbidden rice.

But at the heart of it all is gaining confidence in the kitchen. With three-hour cooking classes offered to ages three to 18, LKA has patient instructors who challenge or take a step back when needed. This gives each child the ability to achieve their self-defined success.

“Cooking is our vehicle. It’s a beautiful, fun, entertaining, crazy, science and art vehicle,” says Bill Duffy, owner of the Austin Arbor Walk franchise. “But it’s secondary to our purpose. The purpose of what we’re doing is building that childhood independence, curiosity, and food literacy. It’s not just as simple as cooking.”

Everything at LKA points to a residential kitchen, giving students the most accurate picture of washing, chopping, and mixing at home. They gradually strengthen their skills with real equipment, including a five-level progressive knife set that teaches safety and responsibility. On top of creating recipes from scratch to consumption alongside their peers, these kids even clean their personal stations to get the full experience.

“Inside of a class, you watch a child go from hesitant, maybe even a bit scared, to blossoming to the point where they’re just overloaded with happiness and pride. Then, you watch the caregiver walk in and see the same thing. Some have actually teared up,” says Duffy. “We do anything we can to get people in the door just to feel it because once you do, it is so very palpable.”

Roaming the Roadside

Encounter the majestic beauty of our local Texas longhorns

When you think of Texas, what comes to mind? There are plenty of images that speak to our state, including the bluebonnets in the springtime, the Lone Star Flag, and—although not our official sport— football. But one symbol that stands out and stands strong is the longhorn.

You don’t have to just go to The University of Texas at Austin’s campus for a glimpse at a longhorn. Instead, you can make a short drive from your home and locate several of them peacefully grazing the day away in their respective fields. Just make sure to grab your camera because capturing their striking presence is a must!

• 11729 W State Hwy 29, Liberty Hill

Fact #1: The Texas longhorn steer with the record for the widest horn span measures over 11 feet from tip to tip.

Fact #2: Known for their high fertility, many longhorns live and breed into their 20s.

Fact #3: When the Texas longhorn population plummeted to near extinction 100 years ago, the United States government had to intervene to preserve the breed.

Fact #4: The most common cattle diseases are no match for longhorns’ natural resistance!

Fact #5: It wasn’t until 1995 that the longhorn was adopted as the Texas large state mammal, per a mock election with elementary school children.

Fact #6: Longhorn cattle are generally docile creatures that are easy to handle.

WILD REHABILITATION

GET TO KNOW HOW ALL THINGS WILD REHABILITATION HELPS CENTRAL TEXAS ANIMALS RETURN HOME

All Things Wild Rehabilitation promotes conservation by teaching children and adults about the beauty and value of our wildlife.

“We’re on track to take care of over 4,000 animals this year,” says board member and lifelong animal rescuer Christy Hullum. “Many animals that come in are found by kids while they’re out in their neighborhood.”

When sick, injured, orphaned, and displaced wildlife arrives at All Things Wild, the team works tirelessly to get them back to their appropriate habitat feeling better than before.

“Release days are joyful occasions because there is nothing more rewarding than seeing an animal get a second chance,” says Hullum.

RECOVERY & REHABILITATION

“Each animal enters the center and is evaluated by our medical team, then is either cared for at the center or by one of our specialized volunteers. The animals receive individual attention to help them recover from whatever trauma brought them in,” says Hullum. “They are provided with a species-specific diet and monitored until it’s time to go back to the wild.”

RELEASING INTO THE WILD

With habitat encroachment becoming more prevalent, All Things Wild encourages stewardship and appreciation of our native animal species. Every release is carefully planned to ensure that those critters have the best chance of survival. The team actively looks for sites with sources of water and landowners who are willing to put out food until the animals can forage on their own.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT

When you go to allthingswildrehab.org , you will discover how you can assist with daily operations as a volunteer (if you are 16 or older), join in upcoming events, or donate to help them get medical supplies and more. Be sure to put All Things Wild Rehabilitation’s Country Brunch fundraiser on your calendar for October 19th at Dale’s Essenhaus in Georgetown! 01

EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY

“Attending our education programs or ambassador events offers an amazing experience to meet a wild animal in person, and to learn about how we can help wildlife survive and thrive in the world around us,” says Hullum. “Ambassador animals are animals that due to some disability are unable to return to the wild. Children especially benefit from seeing them up close!”

KIDS AND POPSICLES ARE THE PERFECT SUMMERTIME PAIR

As temperatures rise, children race to the freezer for this frosty treat or wait anxiously for the approach of the musical ice cream truck. Making homemade popsicles is a fun, kid-friendly activity.

SPICED GRAPE POPSICLES

ingredients:

Makes 18 to 24

• 2 quarts Concord grape juice

• 1/2 cup sugar

• 12 whole cloves

• 4 cinnamon sticks

• 3 tablespoons whole allspice

directions:

Put all of the ingredients into a large saucepan. Bring the mixture to barely a simmer and let it cook for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and pour the juice through a cheesecloth-lined strainer into a bowl or pitcher to remove the spices. Allow the juice to cool to room temperature, and then refrigerate until well chilled. Pour mixture into popsicle molds. Freeze until firm.
