Goldilocks' New Beginnings

Howdy!

Your resident Goldilocks here! After 8+ years of trying on just about every role at the magazine, from staff photographer to creative director, I think I have found the one that fits juuuust right! That’s right, it is about time that I tried being your editor on for size, as well.

Sometimes in life, you find people that fit into your life seamlessly, as you both are here with the same intention, and that is what I have been lucky enough to find with the Manz Family. At the core of everything they do is spreading goodness and finding the heart in the things around them, whether that be a morning run-in with a neighbor at the coffee shop or in the way we choose to tell stories of those in our community. They exude a welcomeness of creating family everywhere they go, which is what I experienced about eight and a half years ago at my very first shoot for the magazine. Katie showed up with newborn baby Copeland strapped onto her chest and the rest is history; I have been working with the magazine from that day forward.

This month feels like a great, well-rounded reminder of all of the incredible things I have gained from being a part of the Boulder Lifestyle team over the years: cultivating community shown by our Boulder Icons story, learning of the events and immense creativity of the people all around us shown in our Summer Music round up, and staying in the know about what’s new around town with our sneak peek access to Parkway Food Hall.

As we celebrate the Summer Solstice this month, allowing us to all feel a new sense of beginning, embracing change and really soaking in every last minute of sunshine, we are reminded countlessly of all of the reasons we love to call this place home.

This was a major renovation of a beautiful 1910 home. It’s in a historic neighborhood, so we kept the front looking much the same. The interior and back, where we added on, is more transitional and updated. We extended the vaulted tongue and groove fir ceiling from the master out to the porch. Even though the interior and exterior finishes would be different, as part of the design we really wanted a seamless color match. We put it to Tami to figure out. I’m not sure how, but she did that beautifully. The Maurer crews did such a great job overall. Sam was my head painter. MAKE A TRIP OF IT

Hit the road to hear live music in one of these rarefied destinations:

Drive 30 minutes into the hills west of town to listen to live music in a 100-plus-year-old log cabin at the Gold Hill Inn,  or depending on the night, out in its sprawling backyard beer garden. Head up the road to the Gold Hill Store & Pub for more tunes and a post-show snack. GoldHillInn.com, GoldHillStore.com

Take US-36 45 minutes northwest to the Rocky Mountain Folks  Festival in Lyons, August 9-11 to see names like Brittany Howard, The Watson Twins and Bonny Light Horseman, among others. Bluegrass.com/Folks

On August 9, if you head one hour south, you can catch Boulderbased musician Trevor Hall in concert with the Colorado Symphony and Valerie June at Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater, a summertime must. RedRocksOnline.com

An hour and a half north, The Mishawaka offers the chance to catch a variety of acts, like Old Crow Medicine Show or MOE., along the banks of the Cache la Poudre River. TheMishawaka.com

Pack an overnight bag and make a road trip out of the four-hour drive to Marble, where MarbleFest offers the chance to hear the music of the mountain town’s locals on August 6 and 7. Aside from great tunes and stunning views, you can also expect food trucks, a kids’ carnival and art vendors—all in a woodsy setting. Instagram.com/MarbleFestCO

Finally, end summer by heading six hours west to the Moab Music Festival, which offers two weeks of chamber, jazz and Latin music performances in one-of-a-kind desert settings, like canyons, farms and even aboard an open-air river boat. MoabMusicFest.org

Finally, an abundance of venues, from concert halls and recording studios to breweries and bars, make it easy to catch live music almost any night of the week, with no planning required:

Pop into Beyond the Mountain Brewing in Gunbarrel for an open bluegrass pick every Wednesday hosted by members

of the Sweet Lillies, or take a stroll on Pearl Street to catch Bands On the Bricks every Wednesday evening. Later in the week, Mountain Sun Pub plays host to a rousing show every Friday. And be sure to check the calendars of venues like Stone Cottage Studios, eTown Hall, The Velvet Elk and more to see what’s new in Boulder’s ever-growing music scene.

Boulder's Second- hand Icons

Stories from the Heart of the Buy-Sell-Trade Community
CONTINUED > 57 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER JUNE 2024

I find it immensely comforting to walk down Pearl Street and encounter the same warm, familiar faces year after year. One of the things I love most about the Boulder lifestyle is the sense of intimacy in this community. Growing up in Boulder, I took this for granted—and I had to move away, then return, to understand how meaningful the felt sense of community is here. It was a motivator for creating a business that relies on community collaboration to thrive.

In (dun-dun-dun) 2020, when both Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange closed, I was heartbroken. Yes, it was devastating that I’d have no secondhand stores to buy, sell and trade with. Yet mostly I was struck by the tragedy that I’d have little to no exposure to beloved characters in the community that are as committed to the secondhand lifestyle as I am.

Feeling a kinship with these folks made me feel less alone. I felt I had allies in my devotion to slowing the climate crisis. I felt my artistry as a stylist, reflected in their enthusiasm for their own stylistic expression. I saw their resourcefulness as a reminder of my calling to champion ethical consumption. Grief flooded me as I was struck by the fact that I might lose this sense of belonging.

The alchemy of this heartbreak, and my hope for the future of our planet, was the catalyst for creating Apocalypse. My intent was to create a communal space where people could come experiment with their creativity and connect with others who were also exploring identity through their wardrobe. Recycling old outfits, ultimately old parts of ourselves, to try on a new look that’s fresh and expansive. A place to reincarnate our past selves and our old clothes simultaneously.

Here we are in 2024 and our resale community in Boulder is stronger than ever. Three buy-sell-trades have opened up within blocks of Apocalypse over the past two years! Our local secondhand economy is thriving because of this collaborative community, who are co-creating a future worthy of our descendants. One that is centered on inclusion, remedying the climate crisis through conscious consumption, and expressing our creativity through all aspects of our humanity.

So, I want to introduce you to some folks in this community who inspire me! They’re secondhand mavens and magicians, lifelong devotees of personal expression. Some I met 10 years ago in the checkout line at Common Threads, and some I’m just getting to know in the aisles of Apocalypse. They are fixtures in the community, style icons, thought leaders, change-makers and joy bringers. I hope you’re as inspired as I am by their creativity, resourcefulness and iconic sense of style!

PAVANJEET

How has resale guided you in finding your personal style?

“At 15, my first trip to Thrift Town was a revelation. Giant 70s glasses, $5 Dior cashmere, vintage tees and dinosaur broaches! I’d found a goldmine deep in the heart of boring Texas. The uncurated hodgepodge let me build a style from whatever caught my eye—combining eras, high and low, and genders, with all things grandma. I’m still holding onto some of those early finds today!”

Tell me about your journey to finding your personal style?

“Well, it hasn’t always been pretty! As a teenager, I dressed sexy in that Y2K, Paris Hilton kind of way. When I moved to SF to go to fashion school I did a complete 180 and went super masculine. I would wear 5-panel hats and sneakers to the club! It was a rebellious response to feeling objectified by the culture. Now I’ve found an aesthetic that’s more authentic than either of those extremes. I love both feminine and masculine influence and will lean in either direction depending on what I need to accomplish on a given day.”

What are your favorite resale stores to shop and sell at and why?

“Apocalypse always, because of everything they are and stand for. I’ve found some of my favorite, most-reached-for pieces there. I love to sell my vintage pieces to become someone else’s treasure. Common Threads too, for sure. I consign there a lot to be able to purchase designer pieces that I wouldn’t otherwise treat myself to. It’s been a really good blend between the two for me and my wardrobe! Also Arc thrift, flea markets and antique stores for my most special pieces.”

How has secondhand played a foundational role in your life?

Goldsm i th, Lapidarist , JewelryDesi

“Every summer my cousins and I would get together at our grandparents’ house and play with a huge chest full of costume jewelry. My granny, Jean, acquired the box at an estate sale and I remember all of us dancing around decked out in goldplated chains and clip-on imitation emeralds. Every time we went through the box it felt like we had our hands buried in treasure. I still get that giddy feeling when I shop secondhand like there are literal ‘gems’ waiting to be discovered.”

Who first championed your connection to secondhand?

“My parents! They were incredible at finding treasures in thrift stores. We stopped at all the yard sales and got secondhand clothes from the mosque. My dad found a rocking lion once. When you pressed its ear, it roared. They inspired a sense of adventure in the hunt!”

What was your earliest influence that led you to the secondhand lifestyle?

“I grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and frequented a secondhand music store in Detroit called Car City Classics. A bunch of us young punks would scour the vinyl section looking for Misfits records or some obscure Japanese print of Miles Davis—the discovery was pure elation. In terms of fashion, I would see these distressed jeans, flannels, Converse, or broken-in loafers in a Ralph Lauren ad, and I realized I could only find that look secondhand.”

Who first inspired your connection to fashion?

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt a connection to fashion. My reselling business, Ricky’s Closet, was inspired by my father who passed away when I was four years old. He was a very sharp, well-dressed man, with impeccable style. I think it’s safe to say that he handed his sense of style down to me. Like my dad, I like finding clothes that stand out, instead of blindly sticking to trends.”

“When I was a junior in high school I bought an opera coat from a senior. It was vintage then, made out of black velvet with purple satin lining. It’s been my protective companion through many storms and adventures since I was 15 years old, and it’s still hanging in my closet amongst my purple/velvet collection. I’m greatly comforted by its warmth and softness.”

For Tommy Dill, founder of Soundularity, it started with a singing bowl. A professional musician working in LA doing music for TV and advertising, Dill was looking for an outlet for stress and a modicum for healing. He started playing bowls and other simple instruments for the pleasure and power of the sound. Years later, after finding his way to Denver, he now offers sound journeys as his full-time gig.

These journeys range in time and content but the goal is to take participants on a trip.  Using a 432 hertz tuning system, attendees are surrounded by rich lush frequencies—harps, synthesizers and guitars, but also rattles, rain sticks and the enchanting hand pan.

The sounds elicit different emotions and invite everyone to travel inward to see what’s there. Dill sets a sign in front of his instruments during journeys that says: Eyes closed, heart open .

Pavanjeet Nikola, another local treasure, offers many sound bath opportunities in the Boulder area. His main instruments are gongs of all different sizes. Pavanjeet offers the following about sound therapy:

“Sound baths are adult naptime but better! They’re a deep cleanse without soap and water. Instead, we use vibration to re-tune the body and mind to peak performance. In the process, we can shed nagging thoughts, stuck emotions and old stress.

Our bodies intuitively know how to heal from stress, loss and disease but we need time in rest. The powerful sound of the gongs helps to quiet the mind and relax the body. Gongs are one of humanity’s oldest musical instruments and the sound invokes a primal knowing.”

There are no prerequisites for attending a sound bath. No experience with yoga, meditation or even mindfulness is needed. Each of his sound baths starts with stretching and deep breathing to prepare everyone to lie down. Then all one needs to do is relax. If you’re not great at relaxing, the vibrations of the gongs will help.

These are great experiences to share with a friend, the spaces are lovely and the feeling after is one of grounded floating.

You can find these upcoming yoga, breath-work and gong events with Pavanjeet at Pavanjeet.com/Events:

BREATH WORK FOR YOUNG PEOPLE:

Life can be stressful and growing up requires a lot of flexibility!

Events such as starting a new school year, taking a major math test, going through body changes or getting into an argument with a friend or parent can often feel overwhelming for young people. Social media can cause even more strain; fueling unrealistic expectations and allowing peer pressure to follow kids everywhere. Stress can make our hearts race, muscles tense and tie our tummies in knots.

Luckily, deep breathing can help us relax and get back to ourselves.

The following breathing exercises are easy to use in everyday life and help ground us in the moment. You can find a quiet place to sit and try these:

Belly Breathing

Put your hands on your belly, and inhale slowly and deeply for four seconds.

You should feel your stomach moving out as you suck in the air. If your breath is still in your chest, it’s too shallow.

Hold the breath for seven seconds, then slowly release it over eight seconds.

If that feels too hard, try this one:

Smell the Rose, Blow Out the Candle

Picture yourself holding a rose in one hand and a candle in the other. Take a big breath in through your nose to smell the sweet scent of the rose. Next, slowly blow through your mouth to put out the candle.

Shawn Neer’s Journey from Racing to Entrepreneurship

Growing up in the backwoods of California’s Humboldt County, Shawn Neer discovered his love for biking at an early age. With few distractions and a spirit of independence, he spent his days riding through the trails, paving the way for what would become his life's passion. It was a journey that led him from the serene landscapes of California to the bustling mountain biking community of Colorado.

Reflecting on his transition, Shawn recalls the pivotal moment when he traded his BMX bike for a mountain bike. The sense of camaraderie in mountain biking resonated deeply with him, offering a stark contrast to the aggressive atmosphere of BMX racing. “I felt there was this sense of community and just this friendly vibe that I really loved about mountain biking,” says Shawn. “BMX is eight people wide on a gate. It's just very aggressive and in mountain biking, you're racing against the clock.”

For Shawn, racing was not just about winning; it was the conduit to a world of opportunities. Exploring creative endeavors like making videos and taking photos, he immersed himself fully in the culture. He quickly gained sponsorships and started doing photoshoots, but it was racing that served as the gateway to his professional career, opening doors to new opportunities and experiences. Turning pro in 2017, Shawn placed significantly in several EWS (Enduro World Series) races in the late 2010s and his pro career culminated in a first-place 2019 EWS Trophy of Nations win alongside his USA teammates.

However, Shawn's journey took an unexpected turn when losing a close friend to a battle with cancer shifted his perspective on life. The grief served as a catalyst for him to reassess his priorities and redefine success on his own terms. With a newfound clarity, he made the decision to step away from competitive racing, recognizing that his passion lay beyond the finish line. “I realized that I wasn't hungry to win races anymore. I was just doing it because I loved it,” says Shawn. “It was a really quick exit, but I don't regret it at all. It's allowed me to pursue different passions… it's cool to still have that same drive that I had for racing, now in a different vein.”

His passion for storytelling and filmmaking led him to establish a production studio Moniker, where he began curating content for brands like Yeti Cycles (one of his first pro sponsors) and WTB. Some of his latest films include Cafe Americano & Dust to Dust (both easily found on YouTube). He’s now expanding his film and visual production services to include brand creation, social media management and marketing strategy development for companies within and beyond the bike industry. Through his digital marketing boutique (NeerConcepts.com), he dove into the world of marketing and brand development and he draws upon his experiences as an athlete to offer unique insights and perspectives. His ability to bridge the gap between creativity and business strategy set him apart, allowing him to forge meaningful connections with brands and audiences.

“Every brand has a story to tell and community to build,” says Shawn. “My mission is to turn those stories into vivid experiences that resonate deeply with audiences. My background as an athlete taught me the power of perseverance and clear vision—qualities that I now bring to every project I undertake. Whether it’s through the lens of a camera or a strategic marketing plan, I’m committed to bringing authenticity and innovation to the forefront of everything I do.”

Embracing his entrepreneurial spirit and an obsessive search for the perfect espresso, Shawn looked to the world of coffee. The Espresso Forge offers a unique experience of handcrafted espresso machines designed for those seeking quality and precision. He started as an aficionado of the durable, steel-forged, manual machine and took full advantage of its portability during his racing career. When the opportunity arose to acquire the company with his partners, he jumped at the chance. Espresso Forge has not only served as an opportunity to grow a business, but it

has also solidified his growing passion for building a thoughtful, strategic approach to marketing. He’s excited to share what he’s learned through building the Espresso Forge Brand and his other start-ups. The key lesson according to Shawn: “When you take the time to build marketing content and strategy from a thoughtfully crafted brand, you can make meaningful connections with your audience. And that’s success.”

Today, Shawn's days are filled with the dynamic rhythm of entrepreneurship. Amidst the hustle of building marketing strategies, dreaming up the next filming location and curating social media accounts, he remains grounded in his commitment to pursuing joy and inspiring others to do the same. Looking ahead, Shawn envisions a future defined by purpose. By channeling his focus, he’s building brands with the same dedication and attention that found him success on his bike. Shawn’s journey is about transforming passion into professional excellence, ensuring every brand story he touches is told with unparalleled authenticity and strategic insight.

Small Adventures, Close to Home

For those of us who call Boulder home, we are all familiar with endless opportunities for grand adventure in the Rocky Mountains. From skiing in the Arapahoe National Forest to summertime camping high in the Indian Peaks, there is a lifetime of exploration right in our backyard. But what about those smaller, often less Romanianized, adventures literally out your backyard? While seemingly less intense and wild, there is a certain gratification that comes from lacing up your shoes or hopping on your bike and leaving out the backdoor…

I find there is self-governance and creativity uncovered in these self-powered outings. No loading up the car, no coolers to leak on the back seat, no forgetting the firewood—just you and your shoes or your bike or whatever self-powered device fits your fancy. There are endless backyard adventures to be had if you can find a more challenging creative way to do things. Check out YouTuber Beau Miles for some inspiration. In the meantime, here are some ideas for summertime:

BIKE TO BUCKINGHAM

I love the Boulder Creek. Grew up in it. But sometimes it’s a bit too busy. On those days, pack up a picnic—lots of cheese and bread and some fruit—hop on the bike and head to Buckingham Park. I prefer going Broadway-Lee Hill-Old Stage-Left Hand to avoid riding on 36. Bring a bathing suit.

RUN/HIKE EBEN G TO CHAUTAUQUA

Starting from the house, of course, run or walk over to Eben G. Fine Park. For those that live a bit further away, hop on the bike to get to the park! Head up the viewpoint trail to the Flagstaff overlook. Cross Flagstaff and hop on the Panorama trail. Continue and hang left when the trail splits to follow the Flagstaff trail down to the baseline. Here you can decide to continue up Chautauqua or cruise back down. Consider a pit stop at the farmers market if it’s a Wednesday or Saturday.

there is a lifetime of exploration right in our backyard.

GOLD HILL RIDE TO MUSIC

Hop on the bike and head up for some music on Friday/Saturday night at the General Store or Inn. Head up Sunshine and go straight up until you hit Goldhill. Or mix it up and head over Poorman Rd. and head up Fourmile. If you’re all in for a night of dancing and picklebacks, bring a tent and camp out on the Switzerland Trail. Pack a light and some water.

BIKE TO RUN/ SKI OVERNIGHT

If you’re looking for a little more adventure and to push the limits a bit, a fun backyard mission is to bike up to Eldora and run or ski—depending on the time of year (last year there was still some snow in late May)— up the Jenny Creek trail. Check out the Arestua hut located 6 miles back from Eldora for a warm place to sleep. There is a Google Calendar to reserve space. You’ll want to get an early start for this one, partly because of the time it takes but also because of the traffic going up Boulder Canyon. While a steep climb out, jumping on the Magnolia can provide some reprieve from the busy Canyon. Once in Nederland, and after a second coffee, head up the last stretch to Eldora. Lock the bike up and throw on the running shoes or skis. Starting by the Nordic Center, Head up the Jenny Creek trail winding behind the resort. The Hut can be a bit deceiving to find but stay on trial and you’ll find it just through a clearing and over a small hill. Bring some good food to cook up. The Hut has cooking equipment so no need to lug all that up on the bike! Wake up and cruise down, or continue the adventure over to the James Peak Wilderness…

A CONTEMPORARY TRANSFORMATION WITH TECTONIC DESIGN BUILD

Resplendent Reinvention

At the base of Mount Sanitas, just off North Boulder Park, lies Newlands House, a stunning example of the transformative power of contemporary design. Once an outdated Tuscan-style dwelling, this family home underwent a remarkable metamorphosis with Tectonic Design Build at the helm. From outdated to clean and contemporary, the Newlands House project exemplifies Tectonic's commitment to elevating everyday living experiences through thoughtful design and meticulous craftsmanship.

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN
98

Tectonic Design Build, founded in 2019 by husband-andwife team Dylan Ochala and Kelsie Michelson, embodies a commitment to environmental stewardship, bespoke craftsmanship and innovative design. Dylan's expertise as a general contractor led him to pursue better building standards beyond conventional codes and Kelsie's role as COO has propelled the company's growth through strategic leadership. By emphasizing transparency, collaboration and fostering enduring partnerships with their clients, Tectonic is reshaping industry norms while setting new standards in design and construction, driven by a passion for excellence and a commitment to community.

"Transforming a family space from outmoded to clean and contemporary means elevating their everyday experience and offering more possibilities for what’s to come," says Kate King, Lead Interior Designer at Tectonic.

The journey began with a vision to reimagine the home's interiors, emphasizing light-filled spaces and an open-concept floor plan conducive to seamless living. Tectonic set out to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living by taking advantage of the home’s location beneath the foothills and capitalizing on the breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains. Expanding windows, a neutral color palette and contrasting wood tones were carefully chosen to complement the natural landscape and flood the interiors with warmth and airiness.

Maximizing space and light was paramount in the design process. Tectonic's approach involved collaborative architectural and structural planning to actualize spaces that didn't previously exist. Additional rooms, including a wine

bar and a new en suite bedroom, were seamlessly integrated into the floor plan to accommodate the family's lifestyle and preferences. Walls were removed to create fluidity between communal areas, enhancing the sense of togetherness that the family cherished.

“We integrated a sleek and modern Ortal fireplace in the sitting room with floating millwork extending from the modern hearth,” shares Kate. “We collaborated with the Denver-based luxury brand, Vonmod, for all custom cabinetry that provided a functional beauty to each space.” High-quality materials, such as sintered stone countertops and book-matched slabs, were chosen for their durability and timeless appeal, ensuring a high-performing home that feels as good as it looks.

But the true essence of Newlands House lies in its celebration of artistic collaboration. Recognizing the wealth of talent within their local ecosystem, Tectonic Design Build invited a host of female-led businesses to contribute their expertise to the project. "Our recent remodel at Newlands House was the perfect stage to shine a light on the brilliant designers, stylists and female founders whose work we so admire," says Kelsie, reflecting on the collaborative effort.

In collaborating with local businesses like Süti & Co. for their Scandinavian-inspired homewares, Incrementum Co. for their knowledge of biophilic plant design, Boulder Bloom for floral artistry and Jones & Co., a modern mercantile born from a passion for conscious living that prioritizes ethically-made, high-quality goods that minimize the environmental impact, the renovation of Newlands House pays tribute to the collective influence of women in the realm of design. “Together, we wove a story of modern elegance infused with the personalities and artistic thoughtfulness hand-delivered from each of these female-led businesses,” emphasizes Kelsie.

In their commitment to sustainability, Tectonic employs ecofriendly practices and materials throughout the renovation process. From diverting construction waste from landfills by partnering with Boulder’s Resource Central and Perks Deconstruction to using zero VOC paint and sourcing natural materials whenever possible, every decision is guided by a dedication to environmental stewardship. Electric appliances are prioritized to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, while plumbing selections adhere to WaterSense or Calgreen certification standards.

At its core, Tectonic Design Build's Newlands House project is more than just a remodel; it's a celebration of exquisite design, sustainability and community. SOMETHING TO SUIT EVERY TASTE

Parkway Food Hall is Longmont's Newest Culinary Destination

Longmont’s brand spanking new Parkway Food Hall, brought to you by principal architect, Meridian 105 (the design team behind Boulder’s Avanti Food & Beverage) and food hall gurus/operating partners National Food Hall Solutions is the area’s newest culinary hotspot. With its grand opening this May, Parkway has redefined dining experiences in the region as Longmont’s first food hall concept. With its diverse array of chefdriven concepts, including sushi, ramen, pizza, tacos, barbecue and more, Parkway is poised to become the heart of Longmont’s food scene for locals and visitors alike. Here’s a breakdown of the impressive and diverse lineup of food vendors.

H3SH3R BBQ

A beloved whole hog mobile barbecue catering service and food truck, H3sh3r BBQ has made its first brick-and-mortar mark as a cornerstone of Parkway. Led by Chef Jeff Gebott, known for his commitment to quality barbecue, H3sh3r has brought its signature irreverent vibe to the food hall scene. Guests can indulge in a variety of offerings, from BBQ Nachos smothered in vegetarian green chili to the iconic Heavy Metal Sandwiches featuring prime beef brisket and pulled pork. Wing enthusiasts can delight in award-winning dry-rubbed and smoked beauties. Even if you’re vegetarian, an option like the Tribute Sandwich with smoked jackfruit, invites diners to experience the ultimate barbecue feast.

HIPPOPS

SPICE FUSION

Under the culinary guidance of Chef Ram Kumar Shrestha, Spice Fusion offers a captivating blend of Indian and Thai cuisine, a creation of the same owners behind Boulder’s esteemed Gurkhas on the Hill. Kalpana Gurung, the visionary founder of Gurkhas, brings a deeply personal touch to her culinary endeavors. Raised in Nepal, Kalpana’s roots in hospitality trace back to managing her family’s restaurant in her homeland.

HipPOPs is a pioneering mobile dessert concept born from the passion of Anthony (Tony) Fellows, boasting over 30 years of experience in the frozen dessert industry. Tony’s vision led to the creation of premium gelato-on-a-stick in which every detail reflects a commitment to excellence. In 2017, HipPOPs expanded to Denver, Colorado, and now Parkway. Choose from a base of gelato or sorbet for your pop, then opt for a chocolate dip and choose from an array of decadent toppings, including caramel flakes and salted pistachios.

CLEAVER & CO.

Renowned for its mouthwatering grilled burgers, Cleaver & Co. has landed in its second location at Parkway following the success of its venture in South Denver’s Junction Food & Drink food hall. Among its standout offerings is the Bacon Be Back burger, featuring bacon-habanero jam for a unique blend of sweet, savory and spicy. The loaded tots, topped with the same jam, hot sauce, cilantro crema and pickles, provide a crunchy yet creamy delight. Complementing these savory delights are thick and creamy milkshakes made with fresh fruit, offering a cool respite from the bold flavors.

BAA HACHI

“We’ve been wanting to launch our Japanese street food concept for over a year now, but the cuisine is a bit untested in Longmont, and this gives us a more affordable way to introduce the concept to the community,” says Lisa Balcom of the husband-andwife team behind Niwot’s Farow. Baa Hachi, one of two new concepts that the Balcoms have brought to Parkway, brings the vibrant flavors of Japanese street food. Drawing on his culinary expertise honed in Michelin-starred restaurants, Chef Adam Chan infuses each dish with authenticity and innovation. From the comforting warmth of Tonkatsu Ramen to the savory delight of Pork Belly Bao Buns, every bite underscores Baa Hachi’s commitment to quality and tradition with a twist.

CHILE CON QUESADILLA

“We were officially the first vendor to be welcomed on board the Parkway team,” shares Christina Richardson, part of the team behind Chile con Quesadilla. “Being a 3-time Top Taco Denver Champion, our flavors are sure to resonate with the diverse tastes of the Longmont community!” When asked about the inspiration behind their culinary concept and its alignment with the food hall’s vibe, Christina explains, “Our food is inspired by Colorado Latin roots with a creative American twist. It is not traditional; however, it has a nostalgic home-cooked feel. We pride ourselves on our slogan of ‘Love to cook and cook with love.’” As for the unique offerings, patrons can expect anything from traditional Birria Tacos to a Carnitas Mac ‘n Cheese Quesadilla.

SHAWARMA SHACK

Parkway also marks the second location for this beloved Mediterranean concept. Specializing in traditional shawarma wraps, fresh salads and bowls bursting with flavor, Shawarma Shack offers a diverse menu. Guests can indulge in a variety of meats accompanied by pickled vegetables and creamy tahini sauce, or opt for healthier options like hummus, falafel and tabbouleh. With an emphasis on authenticity and quality, Shawarma Shack brings the vibrant flavors of Mediterranean street food to Longmont, ensuring a delightful dining experience for all, including those seeking vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

PIE DOG PIZZA

Pie Dog Pizza, also from the Farow team, has undergone a remarkable evolution from its origins as a ghost kitchen concept at Farow to its current status as a standalone culinary destination within Parkway. Starting with a special blend of fresh milled, organic heirloom flours from local baking wizards, Moxie, the dough undergoes a three-day fermentation process to achieve optimal flavor and texture. The sauce, made from organic Bianco Dinapoli tomatoes, exudes simplicity yet packs a punch of flavor. With ingredients like locally sourced sausages from Buckner Family Ranch, organic roasted vegetables and premium pepperoni, Pie Dog pizzas promise an unparalleled pizza experience.

At Alpine Bank, Giving Back Isn’t Just a Footnote in the Corporate Handbook—It’s at the Very Core of Their Operations

Community and philanthropy have been at the center of Alpine Bank’s business model since it was first founded in Carbondale, Colorado in 1973. Today, more than 50 years later, the company has grown to 40-plus locations—including Boulder, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year—but has stuck to those same values.

“As we continue to grow, we keep asking, ‘How do we make sure that our giving grows with the bank?’” explains Chris Maughan, Boulder County Market President, who’s been with the company for 21 years. To answer, the company has woven philanthropy into every aspect of business—from employee culture to customer benefits.

For example, since 2006, all bank employees have received 24 hours of paid volunteer time each year. (This year, they’re rallying all employees to take full advantage of the benefit, with their “24 in ‘24” campaign.) Also, with every swipe of a customer’s loyalty debit card, Alpine Bank donates a dime to causes in either the community, education, arts or environment category, as chosen by the customer. In 2023, this program alone raised 2.5 million for Colorado causes.

Efforts like these—among many, many others— have made the bank a top philanthropist in the state. According to data compiled by the Denver Business Journal, Alpine Bank ranked second for cash contributions to charities among Coloradobased businesses and ranked fifth among all companies in 2022.

But for Alpine Bank, their commitment to giving back is fortified by another equally important core value: Independence.

“We put all the corporate philanthropy and giving decisions in the hands of the local market presidents and/or regional presidents. So, it really is the local team that's making decisions as to how we allocate those dollars,” Chris says.

In Boulder, that translates to many nonprofit partnerships, among other programs.

“I'm probably most proud of our nonprofit partnerships here in Boulder,” Chris says. “For example, Play Boulder [Foundation]. We're very proud of our affiliation with them. We also are big supporters of Growing Gardens; we help them with their banking and act as their lead financial partner. I also serve on the board of Via Mobility, and we're excited to support them in their 45th anniversary this year.”

Along with its many partnerships and community events, the Boulder branch also boasts a conscientious home base at Canyon and Folsom, which is LEED Gold certified. Because the company is employee-owned, they were able to prioritize meeting such standards.

“Our employee ownership group has had some pretty wide-ranging impacts on how we do business over the course of the last almost 20 years, and I’d say a big one is our Green Team and our environmental management system,” Chris explains. “Our employees really put forward this idea because they live and work in these communities, and they want to make sure that the company that they were working for is also a good steward of where they live.”
