Guidance “I highly recommend your selection of David to be your builder. Such selection early in the process will enable him to provide input into the design, and manifest his construction experience to help you achieve a smoother, more accurately and holistically planned and executed construction project.” -Boulder Architect

Trust “We are in the process of building our dream home and have added many complicated elements to the project along the way. David, and Ellis Construction, have been very easy to work with throughout the project. Whenever we have asked them to research complicated details for the project i.e. an elevator, photovoltaic solar system required by Boulder County, fire suppression system and outdoor fireplace, he has thoroughly researched the items and provided us with thoughtful, high value solutions. David has shown professionalism and dedication to respecting our budget throughout the project and the addition of our extra work. I would not hesitate to recommend Ellis Construction; they are an honest, dependable and reliable builder.” -Boulder Clients, New Home

Relationship “As we come to the end of our “project”, I’d like to reflect on the process of not only building a home, but also developing a relationship of appreciation, mutual respect & continuous support & understanding with our builder. We believe this relationship, along with, his level of knowledge in the field was key in creating an atmosphere where superior workmanship stands out. Our home is GORGEOUS!” -Boulder/Michigan Clients, 2nd Home Remodel

Quality “We had worked with other builders initially (and had to fire them for poor work and poor communication) before finding David and it was night and day. Building a house is a tremendously complex process where there are constant choices to be made by the owner and if the builder can’t effectively explain those choices in a timely manner and also layout the overall itinerary of the build, it can go badly and be more expensive in the end.” -Boulder Clients, New Home

Value “We hired David Ellis to add a second story to our home and to update the existing space. We were very pleased with the quality of work and high level of professionalism from Ellis Construction. At the outset, David went well beyond the other prospective builders in doing due diligence on the house in order to present very realistic costs and time frame. The six-month construction project was completed on time and on budget.” -Boulder Clients, Renovation

The Difference “If you join forces with this reputable builder, you should have a pleasurable and successful outcome and be ensured that there will be no shortcuts or big charge variations. I always felt Ellis Construction was looking out for my best interest and getting the job done swiftly and correctly and treated me like family. I couldn’t be more sincere in my recommendation.” -Boulder Client, New Home

Bidding Adieu to the 2016-2017 Ski Season

T

en years ago, if you told me that I would only get ten days on the hill, I would have thought that was a slow two weeks. After logging exactly “zero” days on my pass last year, my stoke level to get ten this year was pretty high. My season kicked off in an unexpected, yet awesome fashion, in Telluride. Although it was only a one day trip in early December, we savored every second. There is nothing like Telluride... especially when you get a direct flight from Mountain Aviation out of Broomfield. My next ski experience took place at our “home base” of Eldora. My kids were delivered new skis and boards by Santa this year, so we immediately started taking day trips up the canyon. With the recent purchase of Eldora by the Powdr Corporation, this also brought the Woodward ski/ride kids program that has been so popular at Copper Mountain. Eldora has long been known for their great children’s lesson programs, but adding Woodward to the mix made a good thing great. January marked another milestone for our family, as my wife Kate took her first ski lesson at Eldora. Her instructor was none other than Harvey Hine, from HMH Architecture + Interiors here in Boulder. When Harvey isn’t designing award-winning homes, he can indeed be found up at Eldora, where he and his wife Gail love visiting their quaint cabin. In February, myself and four other guys headed to Vail for a dudes weekend. Say what you will about dealing with I-70, but to steal their own tagline, Vail is “like no place on earth” when it comes to the vast amount of skiable terrain. I guess I’m also biased as I called Vail home for a few seasons in the mid-2000’s. As usual, Vail did not disappoint on this trip. March opened up with a family trip to Crested Butte. Coined as “Colorado’s last great ski town,” it’s hard to argue their point. One could certainly make a case that if you are going to drive four hours to ski, you minds well be looping through scenic byways, rather than sitting in traffic. The kids loved the ski class so much that they literally cried as we left town. If you go, make sure to hit up The Eldo, for great apres ski and live music. To close out the season, my wife and I escaped to Aspen for exactly twenty-two hours to celebrate our anniversary. We were lucky enough to stay at The Gant, which is a condominium hotel located near the base of Aspen ski area. Our room walked directly out to the hot tub and heated pool. That evening, we took in The String Cheese Incident’s show at the famed Belly Up. With a capacity of just 450 people, we felt like SCI was playing a private show just for us. Pure magic! While Colorado may not have had the record snowfall as our neighbors over in California did, we certainly feel blessed to live in an area with multiple ski world-class ski options, all within a day’s drive. Wishing you a great start to your spring!

in-depth look at the evolution of homebrewing over the past 35 years, as well as exciting recipes from some the country’s finest brewmasters. In conjunction with the book, there will also be an episodic web series in which six featured brewers will visit Dogfish Head, brew an extreme beer with Calagione, and discuss the finer points of beer on camera. Before he teamed up with Dave Query (founder of Big Red F Restaurant Group) and Smith, Selders ran the beer-making at Dogfish Head for nearly a decade, during which time he earned a reputation for unique, extreme and notoriously “off-centered” beers. “Extreme beer is brewed outside of convention,” says Selders. “It's thoughtful and thought provoking. It is more than throwing a bunch of stuff against the wall to see what sticks. Successful extreme beer delivers new flavors and experiences to drinkers while demonstrating a brewer's technical skill and ability to execute fresh concepts in a way that is delicious and satisfying.” While his brewing at The Post is rooted in American tradition and focused on drinkability and simple enjoyment, he emphasizes that balance and depth of flavor—rather than wild technique or eccentric ingredients—are at the heart of Extreme Brewing.

Trend Setter

THE GOLDEN LATTE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY e love trends. Log onto Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter and you’ll see suggestions of ‘in the now’ headlines ranging from

political events to the latest Kardashian fad. Some trends are welcomed and revered (hello avocado toast!), while others sit quietly in the corner while we grapple with the idea of pushing them straight out the door (I’ll let you draw your own conclusions). Currently trending on Pearl Street is the turmeric Golden Latte, the prim-

rose-pigmented drink of 2017. When it comes to evolving trends in the holistic world, all that glitters is gold. So much in fact, that according to Google, turmeric tops the list of rising food trends from 2015 to the present. I sampled one for myself at one of my favorite Pearl Street namesakes, Wonder Press. But first - facts. The Golden Latte refers to the non-caffeinated cousin of the beloved morning muse, espresso: turmeric, honey and (typically) a nut milk. Many drinkers see the this blonde beverage as both a feel-good and a great tasting alternative to the morning caffeine binge. Unlike some herbal and superfood remedies, turmeric has the bite to back up its bark. The orange root tastes like a slightly bitterer ginger. It lends its canary color reminiscent of a picturesque Colorado sunset to the warm, steamy Golden Latte, making it not only healthy but vibrant and inviting too. Turmeric boasts anti-inflammatory properties and is a part of Eastern Ayurvedic medicine, a holistic approach to health that includes the use of all-natural ingredients such as herbs and roots. The barista, Andie, pours me the first Golden Latte of the day. As someone who relishes that morning java, I was a tad apprehensive. The earthiness of the turmeric, however, is counteracted by the savory milk and sweet honey. I’m hooked. So is, apparently, everyone else. I see at least three more Golden Lattes before I’m off into the morning. Though the Golden Latte has soared to the top of 2017’s trending topics, Wonder Press co-founder Robyn Knowlan sees this menu item holding strong. She remarks on the “When a food is beautiful, delicious, simple and very nutritious I think it can outlast any trend.” Now that’s a Midas touch. 38

+ A DIY MODERN STOOL +

ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL | PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL RAINERO | STYLIST KATELYN HUTSONÂ

42

Boulder Lifestyle | April 2017

We're in love with Ben Uyeda, creative director/genius of #HomeMadeModern. He has an entire website (HomeMade-Modern.com) full of modern design projects that don't break the bank. Here's one of our favorite, a simple stool. Perfect for any room in the house, durable and affordable. Music to our ears.

WHAT YOU NEED

TOOLS

• Quikrete 5000 Concrete Mix

• Paint (Pick a color, any color)

• 1 ¼" Diameter Wooden Dowel 48" long

• Painter's Tape

(A single 48” dowel is all you need to make

• Paintbrush

three sturdy legs. 1” diameter and 1 ½”

• 120 Grit Sandpaper

diameter dowels would also work just fine.) • 5 Gallon Bucket (Look for a bucket with a smooth bottom.) • Clean Tap Water CONTINUED >

April 2017 | Boulder Lifestyle

43

DIY

(CON TI N UED)

01 CUT THE LEGS

Cut the 48" dowel intro three pieces 16" long each. This step is where power tools come in handy, or your friendly neighborhood Home Depot or Ace Hardware associate will help you out with a perfect cut. Make sure the bucket is clean and dry and put 3" of concrete mix in the bucket. Add clean tap water slowly. Be careful not to add too much water or else the concrete will be weak and crumble. 02 MIX IT UP

Thoroughly mix the concrete so that every grain of the mix is wet. The mix should be the consistency of cookie dough. After mixing, there will be air bubbles trapped inside. Shake and tap the bucket to bring the air bubbles to the surface. 03 PLACE THE LEGS

Once the concrete has settled, place the legs in the bucket. Stick the legs about 1 1/2 " past the surface of the concrete and let them rest against the side of the bucket. Wait 24 hours then remove. Bend the sides of the bucket outward a few times in each direction to loosen the concrete; then pull the stool out by the legs. Use the sandpaper to smooth the edges. 04 DIP DYE THE LEGS

Measure how much you want to dip dye the legs of the stool. For our stool, we measured 4" from the bottom. Mark with a pencil and place painter's tape at the markings. Paint on the color of your choice, remove the tape and let dry.

ori Fleming is the woman behind local catering company Wildcraft Kitchen. Educated in herbal nutrition, Fleming

decided to branch out a year ago and start her own business. The

name is fitting considering the dictionary definition of wild·craft / ˈwīldkraft/ (verb) is to gather herbs, plants and fungi from the wild. That's precisely what Fleming strives to do with each recipe artfully prepared with solely foraged and locally grown ingredients. For example, rhubarb is a vegetable that can be easily foraged in the Boulder Foothills and is featured in one of the three clean (and simple) recipes Fleming shared with us. Up next on Fleming's agenda is finishing her own greenhouse so she can grow unique vegetable varieties and heirlooms but for now we're enjoying her three beautiful and delicious creations. NONPROFIT VIA MOBILITY SERVICES OFFERS TRANSPORTATION TO THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST.

This situation isn’t rare. Perhaps you’re recovering from surgery, and the doctor says you can’t drive yourself to your appointment. Maybe your mother had a fall and needed help getting her prescriptions, but you work when the pharmacy is open. If you or someone you know is simply unable to drive, Via Mobility Services offers a level of independence we all deserve. With Via meaning “by way of,” this nonprofit’s goal is to provide mobility for life. They aim to promote self-sufficiency for those with limited mobility by administering customer-focused transportation opportunities. Just last year in 2016, Via was able to serve in the neighborhood of 3,000 members in 19 of our communities, spanning five Colorado counties. They operate on donations and a social enterprise business model, meaning the profits from Boulder’s Hop shuttle, Access-a-Ride and Call-n-Ride help keep Via running. “Via needs awareness of the services, in the broader sense, that we offer,” says Frank Bruno, Via CEO. “We need local companies and local governments to hear the message of the service we offer, and how that enriches their business, their communities and most importantly, the individuals we serve who might otherwise become fairly isolated in life.” The heart of the operation, Via Paratransit, provides driver assisted, door-to-door transportation. This is an on-demand, call-in shared ride service from and to any destination within Via’s service area. Trip requests can even be made online at any time. Fares range between two and six dollars, depending on whether the trip spans between communities or stays within. Those with incomes that qualify may even have reduced rates. Via also provides Travel Training, where they will help teach individuals how to safely and independently use public transit. Additionally, they provide Mobility Options, supplying information and referrals to help quickly access transportation information and services in English or Spanish. “What I want to do is to elevate Via Mobility Services and the team here,” says Bruno. “There truly are many elements to the soul of Via, the people we serve, the joy in helping someone feel connected, or reconnected to the community has an energy that is palpable each day around here." “When I have the opportunity to speak with our clients or the families of those we serve, I thank them—they could choose to address their needs in several ways, and yet, they have placed the life of a loved one in our care."

Kati has lived in Boulder for 24 years. As a nurse and mother, she frequently drove

her own car or took the bus around town. When she was 68, her life suddenly changed

in an instant. After suffering a pulmonary embolism, she

could no longer drive or even walk to the nearest bus stop. “I felt my life was over,” says Kati. “I couldn’t bear

asking for help, but I had no choice.”

It was 20 years ago that Kati began using Via’s services.

“I had such a strong resistance to being helped, and when I got on

that Via bus, I would sit in the back feeling sorry for myself,” says Kati.

It wasn’t long before Kati discovered a kinship with her fellow riders. She says she found a little community within the Via bus she wanted to explore.

“I needed help from Via and I got it, but I’ve still felt independent,” says Kati “Every single person at Via cares about my well-being. I feel safe. I feel cared for. And I couldn’t live the life I live without Via.”

AMANDA Q. AGE 30 SCOTT L . AGE 34

Friends since meeting on the Longmont Special Olympics basketball team, Amanda and Scott are also co-workers and neighbors as well as teammates. Despite intellectual challenges, with Via’s help, they are both able to participate in their favorite activities, staying active and pursuing interests and hobbies. In addition to basketball, Amanda enjoys volleyball, softball and track and field, while Scott likes bowling, gymnastics and swimming.

Thanks to Via, they are both able to attend a day program that offers classes,

Scott’s mother and Amanda’s father are both thankful for the Paratransit services available to their children each week. Via

uch like our Publisher likes to throw a good party, we'll take any excuse to pull together a styled shoot. In anticipation of the upcoming fifth-annual Boulder Lifestyle Derby Days, we got to do just that. Insert design and style

dream team from La Dolce Events, Todd Reed and two of our favorite local boutiques, Willow and Eleanor and Hobbs (plus many more creative contributors), and you get a modern chic Colorado Derby captured by the talented Ashleigh Cropper of Red Aspen Photography. We'll leave the rustic theme to our Kentucky friends down South. So how do you create an edgy derby? We combined bourbon-toned neutrals and darker, moody pieces with tai-

lored custom hats from Royal Stag. If it happens to be the one time of year you want to break out classic seersucker, we showed the print a nod with a slit blue seersucker-inspired pant and a subtle striped button up. Now, let's talk florals. It's not a Derby party without flowers. Fiori Flowers inspires us to never use fake plastic flowers as hat decor ever again. There's not a better way to celebrate spring with fresh florals and a classic mint julep. A hugely talented group of vendors, beautiful weather and location and two very cooperative horses named Lirico PT and Piernass de Listo helped create one of our favorite shoots to date. CONTINUED >

OR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, I’VE ALWAYS LOVED FINDING AN EXCUSE TO GET ALL MY FRIENDS TOGETHER FOR A GOOD PARTY. WHILE THIS MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO MY UNDERGRADUATE TENURE LASTING SIX YEARS, THE PRO’S CERTAINLY HAVE OUTWEIGHED THE CONS.”

Fresh after moving my family to Boulder in late 2012, I was looking for different ways to embed myself in the community. After launching Boulder Lifestyle Magazine in early 2013, we concluded that our new publication needed a signature event to help put us on the map. We also felt an obligation to use our media presence to support local non-profits. In May 2013, we held the first “Derby Days” event at the Goldbranch Estates development in Niwot. Leah Colby, president of La Dolce Events, and her team worked tirelessly to put all the logistics in place. To our surprise and delight, the event sold out. Realizing that this was event was going to grow, we moved the location to downtown Boulder in 2014. If you’ve ever driven down historic Mapleton Avenue, you are familiar with the “wedding cake house,” 66

owned by Rudy and Kathi Harburg. For over forty years, the Harburg’s have been a pillar of generosity in the Boulder community, and graciously let us throw a 300-person party on their lawn for two years in a row. In watching the weather forecast before “Derby Days” 2016, we saw that heavy rains were predicted for the day of our event. Fortunately, our friends at The Rembrandt Yard helped us pull a last-minute audible to move the party indoors. In this case, the weather reporters were correct, and the heaven’s opened up for a downpour that lasted most of the day. In spite of the foul weather outside, spirits were certainly not dampened inside. Nearly 400 guests sold out the gallery, mint juleps in hand. To accommodate even more growth, we are excited to announce that the 2017 event will be held on Saturday, May 6th, on the lawn of the Historic Highland Building and City Club in the heart of downtown Boulder. In the last four years, guests of “Derby Days” have contributed over $40,000 to support TRU Care Hospice, Attention Homes, and There With Care. THE CALM BETWEEN CONTROL AND CHAOS SELF-TAUGHT ARTIST PETER BUREGA, WHO WILL SHOW APRIL 20-21 AND OVER THE MONTH OF JULY AT THE SMITHKLEIN GALLERY IN BOULDER, HAS BEEN CREATING EFFUSIVE AND VISCERAL WORKS FOR 20 YEARS

O

pting for trowels, scrapers and knives, artist Peter Burega’s abstract expressionism of moments in places are precisely textured pieces

that inspire feelings of strange wistfulness, where the exactitude of the plot is scaled back by the mercurial nature of each picture. The appeal of Burega’s work is to both the right and left brain. In painting the unevenness of a giant vista, for example, Burega hems together bits and pieces of the subject through a series of lines, grids and squares. In some ways it tames the image with context, allowing the eyes to drift endlessly over each detail while the brain is calmed with order. On the first Saturday of July, Burega will open his third monthlong show at the SmithKlein Gallery in Boulder. It will be called, In the Morning Light. Before that, Burega will be at SmithKlein on April 20-21 showcasing three to five works that have not yet been revealed. Here, Burega discusses the Caribbean trip that inspired the work that will be shown in July, his evolution as an artist and his contributions to society as a creator.

Artist’s Palette

(CON TI N U ED)

JOHN: AT 52 YEARS OLD AND 20 YEARS INTO MAKING ART FULLTIME, WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOU AS AN ARTIST? PETER: I think that, as a person and as a painter, I truly follow

my heart. If something comes along and it takes me in a new direction, I go in a new direction. I don’t paint the same thing year after year and over and over. Every place I go infuses me with new energy and gives me new insight into human nature. JOHN: CURRENTLY, A LOT OF YOUR WORK FOCUSES ON WATER, WHICH IS SOMEWHAT PECULIAR FOR AN ARTIST THAT LIVES IN SANTE FE. TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING JULY SHOW AT THE SMITHKLEIN GALLEY IN BOULDER AND HOW YOUR TRIP TO THE CARIBBEAN INFLUENCED THE PIECES THAT WILL GO ON DISPLAY? PETER: I’m fascinated with the way water meets the earth. I was

drawn to the Caribbean because of how the humidity and wetness causes a complete saturation of color in the light. It is so different than the yellow world of Santa Fe. When I was on the islands, we had a series of serious tropical storms. The sky would change from a paradise-blue to a dark and stormy black, and it was like these huge rolling eclipses coming in from that type of untold vista you get on a beach. There was such lushness in the light and color. JOHN: HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PAINTINGS AND THEIR EVOLUTION OVER TIME? PETER: I’m inspired by very few artists and try not to spend much

time looking at other work so that I can stay individual. Two people I am really influenced by are Turner (J. M. W. Turner, an English Romanticist landscape painter 1775-1851) and an influential painter from Mexico City named Victor Hugo Zaya (still living, known for his complicated textures). I spent the first seven years learning who I was as a painter and went through a couple of developmental iterations of what I wanted my work to look like. My surfaces have gotten very complicated and obsessive. Every painting now takes weeks of adding and scraping away hundreds of layers of paint. The technique has been all trial and error, but the subject matter has always stayed abstract, landscape and expressionist. JOHN: HOW, THEN, AS A PROCESS-ORIENTED ARTIST, DO YOU KNOW WHEN SOMETHING IS FINISHED? PETER: When I feel that balance has been reached. There is a

point where I feel the movement and energy are matching what I need it to in terms of control. JOHN: WHAT ROLE DO YOU FEEL YOU FILL IN SOCIETY AS A CREATOR OF ART? PETER: When I first started painting, I just wanted to make

things that were attractive. Now, I think of it as my commentary, which is finding the beauty in the things that are not necessarily attractive anymore. 76

A NOURISHING PRACTICE KAIUT YOGA ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE | PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY

A

chieving physical fitness so often has a rigorous connotation. We often feel like if we

aren’t pushing our bodies to their physical limits and beyond, we aren’t working hard enough to get to that pinnacle of optimal health. Even yoga, an activity many turn to for relaxation and relief, often has this extreme sport slant and competitive edge. Kaiut Yoga is a style of yoga practice popular in Brazil that has gained a loyal following at Yoga Loft in South Boulder. It’s a universal practice that promotes the joy and peace of improving mental and physical health by starting with the most basic of bodily functions, from circulation to blood pressure to joint health. Kaiut Yoga aims to nourish our bodies, not deplete them. Jeff Bailey, owner of Yoga Loft in South Boulder, notes that the intensity of many styles of yoga is not the true intent of a healthy yoga practice. “Yoga should do no harm,” says Bailey, “and Kaiut

Bailey opened Yoga Loft as a sanctuary for those eager to practice yoga but who didn’t quite fit into other classes they’d tried. Meant to be a safe space where people could take part in accessible yoga practices, Yoga Loft was an ideal place to introduce Kaiut Yoga after Bailey began practicing with Kaiut Yoga creator Francisco Kaiut. “We must learn to practice in a way that generates the movement we want, not what the body thinks it is limited to,” says Kaiut. The Kaiut practice is both relaxing and active, simple and powerful. Focusing on purposeful movements and poses, it’s not flashy or fancy but is instead rooted in simply getting healthier from the inside out. And the health benefits of Kaiut Yoga are immense. From discharging tension to using the muscles to bring healing attention to the joints, Kaiut Yoga breaks the patterns instilled in our bodies through our daily activities and reinvigorates them with mobility and youthfulness, allowing them to age gracefully, as it’s a sustainable practice that gets easier with time. Kaiut Yoga’s popularity continues to spread, and this July will mark the beginning of the inaugural Kaiut Yoga teacher training at Yoga Loft, a class which has already garnered massive interest in the yoga community. To learn more about Kaiut Yoga, stop by Yoga Loft for an enriching, nourishing yoga experience.

rom humble beginnings in small ski town bars to consistently selling out Red Rocks Amphitheater, The String Cheese Incident continues to reinvent themselves as they roll

into their twenty-sixth year as a band. After forming in Crested Butte in 1993, the buzz around SCI on the Western Slope quickly spread to the front range. On December 11, 1994 the band played their first official gig in Boulder, at Mountain Sun Brewery. Shortly thereafter, the upstart musicians decided that being closer to Denver, Boulder, and easier access to I-70, was crucial to their growth. Bassist Keith Moseley, drummer Michael Travis, and mandolinist Michael Kang originally lived at a house on Jay Road with other notable musicians, Dave Watts (drummer for The Motet) and Tony Furtado. “There were no more bedrooms available, but I paid a little money each month to sleep on the floor,” said Moseley. “Back then, we were in between camping, and living in whatever communal situation we found ourselves in. I bought an old shorty Ford Bluebird school bus, put a stove and bed in it, and lived in that here in Boulder for a while,” said guitarist Billy Nershi. After playing 22 shows in 1995, the band exploded into 1996 with 167 shows played, and never looked back. Twenty-two years later, four of the six members still call Boulder County home. This July, Red Rocks Amphitheater will host SCI for a three-night run, which has become an annual tradition of sorts. Since 2002, the band has played 26 shows at the famed venue. Support for each of the shows, will be three different bands (Jyemo Club, Analog Son, Grant Farm) who like SCI, call Colorado home. “This was Travis’ idea to have all three supporting acts be from Colorado,” said Nershi. “We know what a special privilege it is to play Red Rocks, so we’re stoked to be the platform for these bands to experience that magic,” added Moseley. As a sharp contrast to playing a 9,000 seat venue, String Cheese recently performed a twelve show Winter Carnival Roots Revival tour that focused on small venues, up and down the Rocky Mountains. SCI kicked off the tour in their hometown of Boulder, with two intimate shows at the Fox Theater, a venue the band had not played since 2004. For those lucky enough to get tickets to the March 4th show, they were treated to SCI playing their live album, A String Cheese Incident, in it’s entirety. Adding an extra dose of nostalgia, was that 2017 marked the 20-year anniversary celebration of the album, which was recorded from a live show at the Fox Theater in 1997. On April 14th, The String Cheese Incident will release their seventh studio album, titled Believe. Produced by Jerry Harrison, (Talking Heads) the album was recorded and mastered at their recently purchased studio in east Boulder County. “Before we acquired Sound Lab, we would rent studio space, or post up at someone’s house - loading everything in and out each time. It really took valuable time and energy away from music,” said Moseley. Aside from adding auxiliary percussionist, Jason Hann, to the band in 2006, The String Cheese Incident has managed to keep their original lineup intact, which is quite impressive. While it’s not likely that String Cheese will be logging any 150+ show calendar years in the future, the passion and love for the music, and each other, is certainly still there. After having the privilege of catching several shows on their recent tour, I can definitely tell you that cheese with a little aging is certainly something to savor.

“IN A SENSE, PINK EVOKES THE MOST INFORMATIVE & STRUCTURALLY IMPORTANT YEARS OF MY LIFE. AS A PAINTER AND TRAINED COLOR THEORIST, PINK IS NOT A COLOR THAT MAKES ME THINK OF GENDER, RATHER— GOOEY LIFE, DRIPPING WITH PRINCIPLES, KNOWLEDGE AND FORM.”

I

n 2016, The Color Bureau was born, a brand design and social change concept founded by illustrator, paint slinger and brand

designer Neil Mackay. When first opening the yellow door to Boulder Creative Collective’s space, I was greeted by a few pups and hung paintings that made a pathway to Neil's creative space with “The Color Bureau” proudly visible by his desk. Paints, canvas and colors were visible from every angle of the room. “I come from a traditional painting background as you can see,” say Neil. “I studied painting in college and didn’t feel good at color theory. I aced drawing, failed painting, but now I've built my career around painting.” And colors. During the interview, Neil mixed and shared his favorite color, hues of coral pink and their complements. “Pink is such a beautiful color for me— it’s a color that I fell in love with in college, as we were exploring figure drawing and the difference between form & function,” says Neil. “Being a classically trained painter, pink is a color that imbues life and meaning into many of my paintings. Because it starts with red and ends with white, the ability to mix yellow and blue intermittently increases the warmth and/or coolness, like that of the nerves below our skin, or the reflective light between our folds.” After playing with paints, we sat down for a more in-depth interview about how Neil considers design and branding an art form and applying his own brand’s motto: from the inside out.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF?

I am an artist, first, a storyteller second and an artistic activist, third. I study people, objects, color, application and thought. The Myers Briggs test describes me as an ‘extroverted campaigner,’ which was news to my introverted ideals. I lead by example, breaking and bending rules one to two sentences at a time. HOW DID THE COLOR BUREAU START?

Take away the products and brands that define us, and we all seek the same necessities. When you’re hungry, don’t go to red and yellow, that’s bad for you. When you’re hungry go to green and Indian yellow, that’s humble and wholesome. Color naturally defines our lives; perhaps it’s time we understand why? Perhaps color defines your entire life? By working together, from the inside, out—color could define much more than an app or a post. It could help socialize us all— so, when did The Color Bureau start? It’s always been here, someone simply needed to define it. WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PROJECTS YOU’VE WORKED ON SO FAR?

Is it lame to say all of them? Each project presents a new set of challenges and way of thinking. I’ve studied and built complex visual brand systems for apocalypse preppers, an abortion clinic, virtual reality companies. I’ve worked at the global and local level and realized that people just want to connect and make an impact. WHAT DOES YOUR PROCESS LOOK LIKE WHEN STARTING A NEW PROJECT?

It all starts with research, but not in the conventional form. I do field research, yes, observing the client or staff at hand, asking question after question to myself. Most times, however, I sit in my favorite local coffee shop, a place that teems with ideas and thought, Boxcar. This environment drips with new and untapped ideation and perspective. How can I apply this public engagement to a gym? A social community? A women’s right movement? My work starts with social sciences and quickly bleeds into a visual understanding— one that forms the function of the wants and needs of a client and their customer. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE AND USE OF COLOR?

I actually don’t feel like I have a style, that’s my style. I’m like a creative chameleon, I can blend into any environment I am placed in. I know 25 traditional mediums, application styles and ways of getting there. I taught myself the digital medium to make a buck— brand design simply was the end result of narrative structure and diverse application styles. Style, to me, without sounding to pompous, is boring. Style is one way of thinking, why not learn every way? Color, too. 98

Forest in Fourmile Canyon ARTICLE JOHN O'NEILL

JOSHUA ONYSKO AND HIS COMPANY, PANGEA ORGANICS, HAVE PARTNERED WITH ONE TREE PLANTED TO HELP REGROW FOURMILE CANYON’S PINE AND HELM FOREST LOST TO WILDFIRE IN 2010.

C

all it a company’s social responsibility or a personal desire to affect change in the environment, but, no matter what, on April

22, Earth Day, Joshua Onysko, founder of Pangea Organics, and a team of up to 500 people are going to stick 20,000 trees in the ground. This reforestation effort, led by Boulder-based Pangea Organics, is meant to be a start in mending the 8,000-acre burn scar from the 2010 Fourmile Canyon Fire. Onysko, who lives on 20-acres in the canyon, had taken to replanting trees on his property noting the slow-to-no natural revitalization over the last seven years. It was then he decided to include his company and expand the effort. “People have thought that the forest will regrow itself, but with climate change that isn’t really the case,” Onysko says. “Burns from the early ‘80s haven’t come back yet because it is really dry now. A lot of fires, including the one in Fourmile Canyon, came from humans. Now it’s up to humans to stimulate growth in the burn areas.” Pangea Organics is partnering with a Boulder-area nonprofit, One Tree Planted, which creates a matching system for donations to buy trees. But here’s the thing about having a bunch of trees: you have to plant them.

“My grandpa used to say that you can’t grow trees in your mind – you have to get them in the ground,” Onysko says. “Right now we have about 250 volunteers and we’re looking for about 500 total.” 102

Boulder Lifestyle | April 2017

There is a Facebook page called “Pangea Organics Earth Day Tree Planting!” if you want to help out. The 20,000 trees Onysko and One Tree Planted have acquired from a tree nursery at Colorado State University are expected to cover 100 acres. Keep in mind, these aren’t trunked out 10’-tall trees that take the Paul Bunyan-type to plant; they are six-inch seedlings. The project this year won’t revitalize the entire burn area of Fourmile Canyon, but Onysko hopes the efforts of his company will snowball into an annual act of tree planting supported by other businesses in the Boulder community. Already, The Kitchen Community, Whole Foods Market and Big Red F Restaurant Group are forming teams to help plant, and Whole Foods will be providing a picnic lunch for all volunteers. “The part of the canyon we’re focusing on is the most visible part of Fourmile with thousands of people driving and riding their bikes up the canyon,” Onysko says. “We have beautiful mountains, wildlife and trees. As residents of Boulder, we need to become stewards of the land. Acting locally makes a big difference.” All it takes is a push, and the initiation of this project by Onysko and Pangea could have exponential effects as seedling grows to a tree, a tree makes a pine cone, the pine cone makes another tree and so forth until, finally, the pine and helm forest of Fourmile Canyon once again stands tall and green.
