When I was growing up, I heard a lot about what it means to be a man. The messages were everywhere—on TV, in music, at church, at school, and at home. But the ones that meant the most were the ones I heard from men I looked up to and loved—my dad, friends’ dads, teachers, and coaches. Some definitions were definitely more helpful than others, but I’m thinking about them often as I prepare to become a father this month.
We’re blessed that our community is full of great men like the ones I knew growing up, and we’re excited to introduce you to some of them in this issue. Former pro baseball player and brewery co-founder Jeremy Affeldt is an ace who loves creating spaces for men to be honest and vulnerable—while sharing a cold one, of course (“Vulnerability, Community, and the Buffalo Spirit,” p. 34). You can stay in style with sophisticated looks featuring some of the leaders of our community (“Most Interesting Men,” p. 58). And we’ll pause and think about our lives as we consider the advice we’d give our younger selves (“Dear, Me (Men’s Edition),” p. 42).
I’m grateful to have many men in my life who share their lives with me. From my father to my brothers, from teachers and coaches to bosses and mentors, from many friends to those few trusted confidants… there isn’t enough room to list every man who has impacted my life, but they know who they are.
When I think about authentic community and relationships between men, I will always think of my friend Michael. He passed away suddenly last year, and his absence is still acutely felt. Among the many things he left behind is wisdom in the form of poetry. So I raise a glass and hold on to this segment as advice I wish I had known when I was younger and as wisdom I hope to live out every day as a new father, a partner, and a man.
Sometimes, the only perspective we need is our own.
I am gloriously whole.
My heartbeat is the rhythm of the universe. Each star’s last incredible breath mirroring each exhale from my own lungs. Here is all I need.
Now is the only time that matters.

A gentleman is not defined by the content in his wallet or the cut of his suit. He is defined by his manners and the content of his character.
This gentleman. This husband. This father. This friend. This brother. This uncle. This son-in-law. This disciple. A true follower of Jesus Christ. He is my biggest support in my real estate career and the reason I believe in myself again. I am blessed. Pray for the men in your lives.

I always love my time spent at Horeshoe Bay. The “Ram Rock,” “Slick Rock,” “Apple Rock,” and “Summit Rock” courses make for a golf experience that is almost unparalleled in Texas. “Ram Rock” has long held the distinction as one of the toughest tests of golf in the state, and it is still my favorite. I also find “Slick Rock” very enjoyable and a great experience. “Summit Rock” is the private course in the quartet and has fairly limited play relative to the other three. Even the putting course is amazing and offers something fun to do as a family, even for the most novice golfer.
Omni Barton Creek | omnihotels.com/ hotels/austin-barton-creek
There are four eighteen-hole courses at Barton Creek: “Fazio Foothills,” “Fazio Canyons,” “Coore Crenshaw,” and “Palmer Lakeside.” For the most part, the topography at Barton Creek is very undulating which results in some really unique design and architecture on all of the courses. My personal favorite is “Fazio Canyons.” The Omni Hotel at Barton Creek is also wonderful. The resort offers something for everyone—an amazing spa, great dining options, and outstanding golf instruction and practice facilities.
The new shining star in the golf world is Fields Ranch in Frisco. Omni Resorts and the PGA of America have joined forces to build one of the more incredible golf complexes in the country. Fields Ranch East and Fields Ranch West will host 25 major championships over the next eleven years. Additionally, the practice facility, academy, club fitting, and training facility are second to none, and a great short course and putting course round out an incredible experience. The Omni PGA Frisco Resort offers great rooms, a number of really good dining options, a few really good bars, and an incredible spa.
My favorite golf course in the world has to be Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey. You have to be a member or invited by one to play, and I’ve been very lucky to have played it more than fifty times. Every time I go back, I can’t help but be excited for what I know awaits. It boasts some of the truly greatest golf course architecture in the world, incredible fellowship, and world-class conditions that make it simply the best. Pine Valley is very private and requires all players to walk the golf course and use a caddy. It really is a special club in the world of golf, so if you ever get the chance to play here, be sure to take it.

When one talks about distilling in Texas, the conversation understandably usually revolves around whiskey and tequila. But, just like the Lone Star State, the spirit landscape is diverse. That’s especially true in the Hill Country. So, in rounding up area distillers of note, we intentionally included spirits other than those mainstays. Some may be well known, while others have more recently popped onto the radar. No matter how extensive or storied these creators may be, we hope you enjoy exploring the deep history and developing future of the spirits scene in our state—a history and future as bright, broad, and beautiful as the Texas sky.

A BIG LEAGUE PRO’S JOURNEY FROM ISOLATION TO CONNECTION—AND REALLY GOOD BEER
“I played with 750 millionaires, and more than 80% of them are unhappy.”
Walk into Free Roam Brewing Company on Main Street, and you immediately sense it’s a place that is different from your ordinary craft beer pub. There’s a sense of history in the space that includes a 100-yearold well. There’s also a sense of community among its patrons that draws you in and makes you feel like you are experiencing something far more satisfying than a good pint of beer. For CEO and co-founder Jeremy Affeldt, that’s all by design, and it’s a design that began on the diamond of Major League Baseball.
During his days as a pitcher for the San Francisco Giants—a career that included three World Series championship rings—Affeldt recognized a void in men’s lives that wasn’t being addressed. "There are 750 guys in Major League Baseball, and the average salary is $3 million," Affeldt explains. "So, I played with 750 millionaires, and more than 80% of them are unhappy. You have guys buying cars for every day of the week, and they're buying big houses and boats; they look for the models and the actresses. They have all of these things they can't satisfy themselves with because they're just empty."
That emptiness was worsened by insecurity and isolation, and Affeldt realized the challenges he witnessed in professional baseball extended to men from all walks of life. "We're all very insecure because we have to perform every day, and we know we can't," he says. "Over the course of time, they build up these walls. And it's not because they're bad people. I've just learned that men, in general, build up this wall. They don't know if they can do it, and if they do, they don't know if they can maintain it. They don't know if they can be good husbands, fathers, or providers."
He came by these realizations honestly: "When I was going through my divorce, I started learning about myself. I started looking around and saw that men have a hard time being vulnerable not only with their wives or kids but with each other." So, Affeldt decided to do something about it—for himself and others. "What I learned was that healthy relationships do not function without vulnerability. You have to let people know who you are," he said. "My buddies, my close circle of men, cannot protect me if they don't know what they're protecting."
From the beginning, Affeldt has envisioned his brewery as a safe space for men to be open and honest about who they are and what they face. Free Roam's logo combines an image of hops and a buffalo head, an image that "is a homage to our spirit animal, the mighty buffalo. A creature built for the storm, the buffalo symbolizes inner strength, perseverance, and a love of freedom."
The buffalo's instinct is to run into, rather than away from , an approaching storm, which, Affeldt says, inspires him. "I was starting to learn about the buffalo mentality and how buffaloes charge storms,” he elaborates. “That's how I have to get men to look at life. It's not hiding from or running from storms and putting up this facade that says, 'I'm tough.' It's about being present with the storm, admitting you have a storm, and then being man enough to take on that storm."
Affeldt also challenges the stereotypical understanding of a "warrior mentality" by turning it on its head. "It's not saying 'Nothing's wrong. I'm good.' That's not a warrior mentality. That's a coward mentality because it's not good. You're hiding, you're scared, and you're running," he said.
It’s not saying, ‘Nothing’s wrong. I’m good.’ That’s not a warrior mentality. That’s a coward mentality. “ ”
As he ruminated on this idea of vulnerability as the foundation for inner strength and the buffalo’s approach to life's challenges, he started to see community as the framework for connection. He also knew exactly how he would achieve his dreams.
In the Bay Area, Affeldt was invited to speak at a church’s men's night in 2019. The event was on a Saturday night, and he assumed it would be at the church. He knew that a Sunday school room was the last place men wanted to be on a Saturday evening and was not shy about letting the pastor know. To his surprise, the pastor agreed.
"’Yeah, I know. That's why I didn't want to offend you,’" Affeldt recalls him saying. "’I'm putting it on at a brewery.’" Affeldt spoke to 250 men that night. "The men start coming in. I order a beer, light my cigar, and guys start leaving," he recounts. Affeldt and the pastor wondered why a cigar might offend the men. What happened next caught them both by surprise. The men returned with cigars and cigarettes. Affeldt turned to the pastor and commented, "It's called 'safe place.'"
Affeldt spoke to the men that night about vulnerability and the buffalo mentality. "I cried. They cried. And that's when I realized this is the vulnerability I'm looking for.
I want to get to the hearts of men where they can be real." As he drove back to San Francisco, he says he felt God directing him to create a place where this could be a regular occurrence.
The following year—as the world reeled and the COVID pandemic raged—Affeldt saw a perfect opportunity to apply the buffalo mentality and charge head-first into the storm by launching Free Roam with guys he got to know at that brewery, manager Brandon Phillips and head brewer Jaron Shepherd. Many called him crazy, but Affeldt remained steadfast. "I'm not nuts. I know why I want to do it. I'm not just wanting to open a beer hall. I have a passion for community and a passion for men. My thought is if I can create an environment where men can be real, get together, and have a brewery, yes, but almost like a pub where you go in, and guys are sitting at tables, and they're hanging out."
And he has seen people form genuine connections. "Be as vulnerable and transparent as possible," he says. "You need to be transparent with everybody and vulnerable with a few. Transparency is just about who I am. If you don't like me, that's fine. I won't play the game of charades and become what you want me to be so I can hang with you. And then there's another circle; they know my deepest, most intimate frustrations and thoughts. Those are the guys that give me wisdom."
What was born out of a commitment to create a safe place for men has expanded its scope to be a place where everyone can be honest, and Affeldt hopes that becomes the legacy of his brewery and his life. "I've seen men cry. I've seen women cry. I've seen marriages hashing out arguments in the corner. I've seen guys figuring stuff out. I've seen business deals. That's life."

As we did for women last month, we want to give the men in our community a chance to pause and reflect on their lives. After all, “What do you wish you’d known when you were younger?” is a question men face too. Still, it can be a struggle for guys to take the time to consider. But as James Castro of Conscious Health & Wellbeing, PLLC says, “The future is really only the next breath away.”
To begin the exercise of reflection, Castro suggests homing in on your purpose, which serves as a foundation for the rest of our work. “Purpose provides the frame of reference for perpetual reflection and intentionality,” he says. “It becomes the lighthouse, the barometer, to measure most things in our life, showing us the way to view events, thoughts, and feelings.”
If one struggles with painful memories or emotions along the way, Castro offers this encouragement: “The past doesn’t have to equal the future. Life is really full of so many positive possibilities… Everyone has resiliencies; learning how to access them and use them helps overcome hard things!”
We extend a heartfelt “thank you” to the many men in our community and networks who were willing to pass along their wisdom. We’re especially thankful to the guys of Morningside at Menger Springs and to those who attended a recent “Men’s Night” at Free Roam Brewing Co. for being honest, transparent, and vulnerable and living out the truth that we all thrive when we charge the storms of life together.

For years, Pauly Tamez has been a student of the outside. He’s been trying to translate the environs and vistas of Texas to canvas since he first put paint to paper as a child. Now an adult and full-time artist, Tamez revels less in capturing a scene and more in discovering it. We sat down with the Boerne master to learn more about his inspiration, his vision, and the joy that he finds in being a man who makes art.
[Responses edited for length and clarity]
I discovered I could color drawings with water-based paint around age seven when I got one of those inexpensive watercolor paint sets with a single brush. I've painted with several mediums since then and pretty much grew up expressing myself with one medium or the other. I had a couple of great mentors who influenced my work and encouraged me to develop a passion for painting. The late Bill Zaner helped me develop the discipline of painting quickly and consistently. David Caton helped me develop my skills as a fine artist by exposing me to other historical painters and encouraging me to study color and composition.
Certainly, my environment—be it the Hill Country, West Texas, the Gulf Coast, or anywhere else I travel—is an inspiration for landscapes. But ultimately, it is about reaching people. I am a servant, a giver, a teacher, and a life-changer. I give away as many or more paintings as I sell. I love to teach, and I know my painting changes the lives of each person I see, meet, or engage with. I see paintings in everything, everywhere. Sometimes I wake up thinking of my next work. I relate to Vincent Van Gogh when he said, "I dream my painting, and then I paint my dream."
When I paint landscapes, florals, or representational works, I use an impressionist style: loose and colorful, representing subjects with shapes with little detail. My abstract work is very expressionistic. I paint bold colors that flow and move. I love painting something that different people see in different ways. It's my expression, and the viewer's interpretation, but color, shape, composition, and perspective all come into play.
I agree that it's a stereotype, but it's not accurate. I have yet to find a man who is not, at some level, appreciative of fine art. I've related to all sorts of men through my art— professionals, craftsmen, country boys, outdoorsmen, veterans, tradesmen, and service workers. Art is emotional, and it reaches all men on some level, even if they don't like it. We all see things differently. Of course most men have an appreciation for fine art!
DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR YOU AND YOUR ART?
When I retired, I was able to merge my passion with my purpose. I determined I wanted to paint the rest of my life. I work every day to get better—emotionally, spiritually, and as an artist. I don't want my paintings 10 or 20 years from now to look like they do today. I'm always trying new things, techniques, styles, and colors. I want to be a better artist, and I am purposely working toward that. And that purpose is wrapped in service, giving, teaching, and changing people's lives.
You can find Pauly Tamez’s work at venues and galleries around Boerne, San Antonio, and the Hill Country. Learn more at ptamezart.com

A Local Physician Encourages Men to Take Charge of Their Healthcare and Stay Healthy for Life
“I’m here because my wife made the appointment.” This refrain—or something very similar—is one Ben Stahl, MD, hears all too frequently. He says that in his experience, he often encounters men who only seek medical attention at the behest of their spouses. Stahl is not alone in this; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in 2001 that men are 30% less likely to visit the doctor than women. Experts say the trend still holds, even though the data is a few decades old. While there is some debate around the reasons for this tendency, many medical experts say that it needs to change if men want to live longer, healthier lives.
Stahl attributes this phenomenon to men's focus on their careers and family responsibilities, often to the detriment of their own well-being. This tendency to prioritize external obligations over self-care can lead to delayed diagnoses and exacerbated health issues in the long run.
To combat this trend, Stahl encourages men to take a proactive approach to their health, starting as early as their twenties. He emphasizes the importance of regular check-ups, which gradually increase in frequency as a person gets older. By encouraging men to take an active role in their health
from a young age, Stahl says those practices will become lifelong self-care habits and can help reduce the need for more intensive care in the future.
This concept of patient empowerment through education and engagement is central to Stahl's approach. With each patient, he seeks to understand an individual's priorities and values, tailoring his care accordingly. He’s found this improves a patient’s motivation to participate in the process. Drawing parallels to financial planning, Stahl encourages his patients to view their health as an investment in their future quality of life. Just as they would consult a financial planner to secure their economic well-being, he urges them to proactively manage their physical health to enjoy the fruits of their labor in retirement.
CONTINUED >
A shift in perspective like this is often needed to get men to take their healthcare seriously, Stahl says. To address common concerns men may overlook—issues such as fatigue, mood disturbances, or decreased desire—he emphasizes the importance of routine screenings, including comprehensive blood work. By identifying potential underlying problems, such as low testosterone levels, he can offer personalized interventions ranging from lifestyle modifications to medical treatments like testosterone replacement therapy.
Stahl established Boerne Family Medicine in 2009, hoping it would be not just a healthcare facility but also a cornerstone of the local community. As a 1995 graduate of Boerne High School, Stahl's roots run deep in the town. Together with his wife and four children, he not only runs the practice but also actively contributes to the fabric of Boerne's life.
His dedication to his hometown reflects his commitment to providing personalized care that transcends your typical clinical visit.
As a family medicine practitioner, Stahl is driven by a curiosity for all aspects of health. His decision to pursue family medicine stemmed from a desire to understand and address the diverse array of health concerns that individuals face. In his view, no single area of medicine dominates; instead, every facet contributes to a comprehensive understanding of health and well-being. This philosophy is reflected in the approach he champions at Boerne Family Medicine, where patients receive care that encompasses the full spectrum of their health needs.
The clinic serves people in every stage of life, from infants to seniors, and typically sees between 500 and 600 patient visits each month. Stahl affectionately jokes that they see patients "from diapers to diapers," underscoring the practice's commitment to lifelong care. However, Stahl's vision extends beyond reactive medical interventions. Embracing a new approach he refers to as “Medicine 3.0,” he is committed to preventive care and lifestyle improvements as cornerstones of his practice.
At the core of Stahl's practice is a collaborative, honest, and goal-oriented approach to care. His goal is to empower each patient to become an active participant in their health journey. Through education, engagement, and proactive interventions, Stahl especially hopes to set men free from the constraints of preventable health issues and equip everyone with the tools they need to lead a vibrant, fulfilling life.

Opposite: Defender
The Range Rover is the standard-bearer of performance and sophistication. Available engine systems include a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and a brand-new all-electric option. Technology is fundamental to these vehicles, with a standard 13.1-inch touchscreen, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration. Add in Meridian Audio’s 35-speaker system with noise cancellation, and you’re in for one incredible ride.
The 2024 Defender pairs its iconic unibody design with a V8 engine or a range of hybrid systems, and the electronic air suspension guarantees a smooth ride. There is a wide range of trim packages to choose from so there are hundreds of ways to customize your vehicle to fit your wants and needs. Configurable Terrain Response is available so you can fine-tune your approach to any off-road environment you encounter.
Finally, the Discovery rounds out this year’s roster with impressive 4- and 6-cylinder (gasoline or hybrid) engine options. Dynamic Stability Control and the “Advanced Off-Road Pack” option provides All Terrain Progress Control that acts as a lowspeed cruise control feature for any road conditions.
