THESE DELICIOUS CRAFTS ARE SO EASY AND FUN IT’S SCARY
This fall, my children and I conjured up some super easy Halloween treats that are sure to give you the “heebie-jeebies!”
This is one of my favorite things to do with my kids during the holidays. These are simple enough for little ones to do themselves, and suited for toddlers whose favorite phrase is, “No, I do it!” The best part is these tricky treats are completely MESS-FREE, making this a perfect activity to do with little ghouls and goblins.
That’s right! You don’t need to fire up the oven, and there are no dishes to wash, sticky counters to clean, or aprons/bibs required in the making of these crawly sweets. When you are a parent, it’s a total “win” when doing hands-on activities with your kids that require minimal adult assistance. The focus is on the fun and memories made!
These little treats also only take a few minutes to make, so you will be done in no time. When you are dealing with small children who can only concentrate on something for so long, I find that a quick and rewarding activity is best. You’ll all be gobbling up these irresistible treats before you know it.
First, get yourselves in a festive mood by dressing in a spooky t-shirt or some Halloween pajamas. Then, get those jittery little hands busy while you put on your favorite Halloween playlist and light a pumpkin spice candle.
At our house, we made “Scary Spider Pops” and “Wicked Witch’s Brooms.” The “Scary Spider Pops” make perfect treats to pass out for Halloween since they stay wrapped. These are great for trickor-treating, classroom exchanges, or Halloween gift basket trading with friends. The “Wicked Witch’s Brooms” are wonderful for Halloween parties, or just a fun after-dinner dessert for the family during the month of October. I hope you have as much fun as we did making these simple spooky treats!
• Lollipops (you can use any kind of round lollipops. I recommend Dum Dums or Tootsie Pops)
• Pipe cleaners (choose some spooky colors)
• Googly eyes
• Glue (hot glue or craft glue works best)
• Blunt-tip scissors (best to use with littles)
1. Cut two pipe cleaners in half with the blunt-tip scissors. Then line the pieces up together, horizontally.
2. Place a lollipop slightly off-center of the pipe cleaners — about a third of the way — and tightly wrap the longer end around the base of the lollipop stick. Pull the ends nice and taught so the “spider” is secure and it doesn’t slip off the lollipop.
3. Spread the pipe cleaners apart on each side of the lollipop. You will have four “spider legs” on each side.
4. Bend the ends of each pipe cleaner “spider leg” downward at a 90-degree angle to create creepy crawly feet.
5. Glue on two ghoulish googly eyes in the center of the “spider” where the pipe cleaners are twisted around the base of the lollipop, and you are all done!
These are so fun to make with your kids! My three-year-old son absolutely loved playing with these and eating them, too! I set up all the supplies on the kitchen counter and he was able to do pretty much everything himself. The only part he needed a little help with was wrapping the pipe cleaners tightly around the lollipop base. He can’t wait to pass these out to his friends for Halloween!
• 1 bag of pretzel sticks
• 1 bag of miniature peanut butter cups
• A cute plate or platter (bonus points if it’s Halloween-themed!)
1. Unwrap your peanut butter cups completely. Remove the outer foil and very carefully peel off the black paper on the inside. If the black paper is sticking, your hands or the chocolate may be a bit warm, especially in Texas weather. Place them in the refrigerator for a few minutes and you should have no trouble peeling off the paper.
2. Arrange them upside down on a platter.
3. Take a pretzel stick and press it firmly, yet gently, into the center of the peanut butter cup. You’ve just created a witch’s broom!
These scrumptious little treats come together faster than you can say “Double, double, toil and trouble!” My five-year-old daughter was really excited to try these… turns out chocolate, peanut butter, and pretzels are a favorite combination. These can easily be made ahead of time for a Halloween party, they probably won’t last long once the festivities start!

No, it’s not the end of the world. When the sky goes dark on an otherwise sunny day, it can definitely feel ominous. But a solar eclipse is really a normal, natural, and beautiful event. What is rare is that we get to see one so close to home. And on Saturday, October 14, one of these spectacular displays will move right through the skies over Boerne.
The Texas Hill Country is a prime location to see this exciting phenomenon this year. Everyone from avid astronomers to casual sky watchers will make their way to a swath of the Lone Star State to watch the Sun play hide-and-seek with us.
So we’ve put together a handy guide to help you prepare for the light show and get the most out of your eclipse experience this year!
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun's light. This celestial dance creates a mesmerizing spectacle, turning day into night for a brief moment. They’re actually pretty common, with a total eclipse taking place roughly every 18 months. What is less common is one taking place while the Sun is over land where people could see it — remember that 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water.
An annular eclipse is a type of solar eclipse where the Moon covers the central part of the Sun, leaving a glowing ring ("annulus") around its edges. This happens when the Moon is slightly further away from us so its apparent size doesn’t cover the Sun’s entire disc. Unlike a total eclipse, the Sun's bright corona remains visible during an annular eclipse, giving it a unique and awe-inspiring appearance.
Fortunately for us, the eclipse will be visible over a pretty wide area around us, but the closer you are to the center of the path, the longer the period of annularity will last. In Boerne, we should see almost four minutes of annularity, starting just after 11:51 a.m. If you ventured a few miles southwest of Bandera however, you could see a full extra minute of maximum darkness.
Ideal spots for observing this cosmic show around Boerne include open fields, parks, or elevated viewpoints away from city lights. Consider scenic locations like Joshua Springs Park and Preserve or Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area. Embrace the unique charm of Boerne's landscape as you watch the Moon delicately envelop the Sun, or celebrate in a more festive fashion at Main Plaza as the "ring of fire" takes over the sky.
Even when it’s behind the Moon, it’s never safe to look directly at the Sun. Make sure you’re using certified eclipse glasses — regular sunglasses do not count. Look for reputable sources and make sure your glasses meet recommended safety standards. If you're using telescopes or binoculars, use proper solar filters to avoid eye damage. Don’t like things on your face? You can still watch the eclipse using an indirect viewing method like a pinhole or box projector. These can be easily made in advance. Finally, always be mindful of your surroundings – choose safe, open spaces away from traffic and hazards.
So what if you can’t see this one? Or heaven forbid it turns out to be a cloudy day? Or maybe it’s so beautiful you just want more? Amazingly, eclipse watchers in the Boerne area won’t have to wait long because an actual total eclipse will grace our skies in just a few months' time. Yes, we’ll get to see a total eclipse on April 8, 2024. So hold on to those eclipse glasses and pinhole cameras because you’ll be putting them to use again soon.
While the annular eclipse this year is expected to be a big event, next year’s total eclipse will be even bigger. The city expects more than 50,000 visitors to flock to our town for the spectacle. Book your viewing spots now!
For more information on eclipses and how to view them, check out NASA’s eclipse page at solarsystem.nasa.gov/ eclipses . A Comedy Night Fundraiser You Won’t Want to Miss
Do you need more laughter in your life? Do you love helping worthy causes? This month, you're in luck with the perfect event that combines both: a star-studded comedy show that benefits a local company's charitable foundation. "Laughter is the Best Medicine" is coming soon this month!
Window World is a national company based in North Carolina whose CEO Tammy Whitworth started the Window World Cares Foundation with her late husband in 2008. They chose to partner with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital when their oldest child was born prematurely and spent extended time in the hospital. Through that experience, Whitworth became acutely aware of how taxing concern for a child's health can be on a family.
Local company franchise owners, Martin and Debbie Bomba, who operate locations in San Antonio, New Braunfels, and Corpus Christi, lead the local charge to raise funds for this cause and have had some incredible success over the years through various means.
Martin and Debbie have been in the business for over 30 years and have owned their Window World locations for over two decades. For 11 of those years, they held an annual golf tournament at Canyon Springs Golf Course to raise funds for the Window World Cares Foundation. Then two years ago, they heard about an alternative idea from some friends of theirs in Cincinnati, Ohio who had held a comedy night as a fundraiser that had proven to be popular and successful.
So Martin and Debbie decided to pursue that avenue and in 2022, they held their inaugural comedy night, titled "Laughter Is the Best Medicine." It was such a huge success that they raised double the amount of money for their best year of golf tournaments. That convinced them they were headed in the right direction and decided to continue the show this year.
It is going to be an evening you won't want to miss with Cleto Rodriguez hosting comedians Roman Garcia and others. In addition to the laughter, there will be wine tastings, an exciting live auction, and silent auction items up for bids. In the event you aren't able to make it, you can still join in on some of the fun and take part in bidding on the auction items from the comfort of your own laptop through their website.
"The most enjoyable part for Debbie and I is just giving back to our community. We are committed to this children's charity, St. Jude, because of the remarkable work they do with children with cancer and other catastrophic illnesses at no cost to the families. In addition, they have made amazing strides in medical research that they willingly share with other entities to help others." One hundred percent of St. Jude's funding comes from donors so they are free to focus on saving lives. Every child that goes to St. Jude, regardless of race, ethnicity, or economic status is treated at no cost. To date, Window World Cares Foundation has donated over $14 million to St. Jude's Research Hospital.
The heart of Martin and Debbie Bomba shines through all of the work they put into raising funds to help others. “Debbie and I love serving others and we are committed to continue helping others because we love our great nation.”
The future of Window World is looking bright as they will be visiting with everyone that makes it out to the Comal County Fair as well as having a brand new line of windows out this month available at all three of their locations.
Giving back isn't anything new to Martin and Cindy at Window World either. They take part in fundraising for Veterans organizations as well and their most recent fundraiser was with the All Veterans Group, an organization that helps members of the community tandem skydive. As part of the AVG's Hometown Heroes program, one
of the few remaining World War II veterans from Lytle, Texas took part in a tandem jump as part of his 100th birthday celebration. This event was used to raise funds for the Veteran's Airlift Command, an organization that assists veterans and their families with private flights to get needed medical care or to see family members at no cost to the veterans.
"Laughter is the Best Medicine" will be held this coming October 21, at Pedrotti's Ranch in Helotes. To reserve tickets, visit windowworldtx.com/funny.

• 4 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tablespoon baking powder
• 3/4 cup sugar
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt
• 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
• 6 large eggs, separated
• 3 cups whole milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
directions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
2. Whisk together melted butter, egg yolks, milk, and vanilla in a mixing bowl until combined.
3. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and whisk together. Batter should remain lumpy.
4. Whip the egg whites until they reach medium peaks.
5. Gently mix half of the whipped egg whites into the batter with a large rubber spatula. Then gently fold the remaining half into the batter. Batter should remain lumpy and have large parts of egg whites not fully incorporated.
6. Preheat No. 14 Comal griddle on burner over low heat and lightly coat with butter.
7. Drop a cup (~4 tablespoons) of pancake batter on the griddle and cook to set. When bubbles start to form on top, lift pancake halfway up to see if it’s golden brown and crispy on the edges. If ready, flip pancake.
8. When pancake is golden brown on both sides remove with spatula.
9. Serve warm with maple syrup.

Boerne may seem like a small town, but you can find a world of flavor if you know where to look. These five restaurants all stand out for their commitment to tradition and dedication to producing the highest quality food from all over the globe. Before you book a ticket to South America or Europe in search of authentic Salvadorian pupusas or mouth-watering Italian wedding soup, you may want to try them just down the road.
Good ol’-fashioned American comfort food is home at The Dog & Pony. The menu has all the classics: burgers, hot dogs, and favorites like chicken fried steak and meatloaf. Heather, one of the managers, speaks highly of the catfish plate and loves how relaxed the restaurant environment is. With an expansive outdoor space that features a playground, basketball court, and performance stage, there’s something for the entire family to enjoy. You’ll leave with your bellies full and a yearning to come back soon.

Alberto Amaya brought himself out of retirement in 2022 to reopen his restaurant Casa Amaya Pupuseria & Taqueria and give Boerne a taste of authentic Salvadorian cuisine that’s hard to find without traveling to Central America. Alberto’s favorite item is the pupusa, a traditional dish made by stuffing corn tortillas with beans, meat, and cheese. They are incredibly soft, flavorful, and downright irresistible. Casa Amaya also serves other regional specialties like Honduran fried chicken and Guatemalan garnachas. The chefs cook as if they are cooking at home and pour love into every dish. The colorful dining room serves as Alberto’s office so he can greet each guest and share the love. If you’re looking for a restaurant that offers more than just a meal, be sure to stop by Casa Amaya.

In early 2022, I was sitting in the back of Cibolo Creek Brewing with my two best friends, Shelly and Olga. I picked up my cell phone to show them what I had created on Facebook the night before: a page called “Craft Beer Girls of Boerne” (CBGB). I had talked a lot about doing this for over a year, and — after Olga blasted it out on social media — the group took off.
Initially, I thought CBGB would only appeal to a handful of regulars, but, oh, how I was wrong. Our gatherings quickly grew, and it was eye-opening that there were so many women who had just moved to Boerne and were looking for ways to get out in the community and connect with others. CBGB now has over 400 members and every meetup results in new friendships.
There’s also a page called “Where’s Laura?” where you can check out all of the local places I go. But now, come along as we tour Boerne’s amazing craft beer scene!
Free Roam is on Main Street in the old Green Bull Jewelry building. After reading their story before they opened in 2022, I knew we were about to get some good beer in town. The “Low Fence Lager” is the top-selling beer, but I have had some great IPAs, DIPAs, stouts, pale ales, and even a cream ale. Out back are food trucks and Lupe’s Mex Tex is usually open. Free Roam also hosts live music and events like the 5K Run Club on Mondays and trivia on Tuesdays.
Cibolo Creek Brewing just celebrated its seventh anniversary. The atmosphere is very friendly, and they usually have several house beers on tap. My favorite is their “Creekside IPA.” They almost always have small-batch brews on rotation too. The food is also great: The BEST Burger on Potato Roll is highly recommended and it comes with the best fries in Boerne. You can sit out front for a view of Main Street, or head back to the beer garden with a stage for live music.
Hamby’s is back as the newest brewery in town. Once a restaurant in the 1970s and ‘80s, it was reborn this summer. They specialize in smash burgers, ice cream, and milkshakes, but the most exciting thing to me is the beer. They have around 11 brews on tap that do not disappoint. My favorite so far is the “Hazy Weekend Pale Ale” and the “Nitro 48ers Porter.” You can even grab a beer to go or pick up a few cans to enjoy at home.
Opened in 2002, the Dodging Duck is Boerne’s very first brewery. My favorite thing — other than the beer — is their vegetarian/vegan options for food. They have a vegan burger and bratwurst, but my go-to is the chopped plate with a portobello mushroom and a side of sauerkraut. If you like a good salad, the Dodging Duck makes the “Heart of Boerne Salad,” which is the best in Boerne. There are usually six craft beers on tap, and you can enjoy anything from IPAs, Belgian-style ales, doppelbocks, red ales, and stouts.
Tusculum Brewing is in the historic H.O. Adler Building where Bergmann Lumber operated for many years. Most weekends there is live music inside when it’s hot and in the huge beer garden when it cools off. There’s great food featuring sandwiches, sharables, and salads. My most recent favorite beer has been the “Lucky 13 Stout,” but watch out — the ABV is 13%. Also give the “College Try,” an American dry-hopped lager, a go. I heard it was a beer they messed up, but it ended up tasting great!
28 Songs Brewhouse + Kitchen is on the far north end of Main Street and opened this past April. Along with a great guest tap selection, they have a few of their own beers on tap and it has been a lot of fun trying them. My favorite beer so far has been the “Juice Sesh” which is a session IPA. I also really enjoyed the “Phainopepla Porter.” The food is delicious, and there are a lot of TVs, so it is a great place to watch sporting events.
Dog & Pony Grill is on the far south end of Main Street. They aren’t a brewery, but the owners are very passionate about the craft beer scene. They serve brews from all over the world, including rare beer selections that you can’t find anywhere else around. I was just at their Anchor Brewery event where they were serving the last Anchor keg in the state of Texas. They have a full menu, and the outdoor area is awesome with its shaded deck, picnic tables, and playground. Dog & Pony also hosts a lot of live music.
I’m Laura White and love being a part of the Boerne beer community. I grew up in Boerne and graduated from Boerne High School in 1998. After finishing college, my family moved around with the Air Force and we ended up back in Boerne in 2014. A few years later, Boerne’s beer scene started emerging and with my love for craft beer, I knew I was living in the right place. You can find me on my Facebook pages: “Craft Beer Girls of Boerne” and “Where’s Laura?” If you want to connect, find us on Facebook and/or Instagram. We would love to meet and share a beer with you soon!
Ask Boerne attorney and bourbon enthusiast Shawn Lovorn when his fondness for the popular spirit began, and he's quick to respond, "I've been drinking whiskey all my life." What started as an observation of his grandfather enjoying the familiar and regal purple bag of Crown Royal and his father's preference for Canadian Club and Coke, Lovorn began his journey to develop an appreciation and understanding of his own.
As he remembers his dad's inclination for the rye of the Great White North, you can hear the smile in his voice, "That was the worst thing, but that was where my interest started. It got more refined as the years went on."
"I've been on this trend of liking really good bourbon, and I was in Kentucky a couple of years ago and went to Buffalo Trace Distillery. That's my favorite," he recalls. As he recounts
the memory of stepping into the barrel-lined heart of the facility, Lovorn's appreciation is evident, "That's the best smell in the world."
It's not lost on him that whiskey is a popular indulgence among the women and men of the legal community, but Lovorn forges his own path. "A lot of attorneys drink Scotch," he notes. "But, I'm a bourbon guy all the way. It's the holy grail, the unadulterated version of the spirit. I drink it neat or in an Old Fashioned."
After earning his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from St. Edward's University in Austin, Lovorn obtained his Juris Doctor degree from St. Mary's University School of Law. He was admitted to the Texas Bar in 2005 and founded the Lovorn Law Firm that year. With offices in Boerne and New Braunfels, the firm practices family, criminal, and business law and works in wills, estates, and probate. CONTINUED >
Several months ago, the Boerne offices moved into the iconic Carstanjen-Hall Mansion at 705 South Main Street. With a long history and multiple stories of ghostly encounters, Lovorn knew it was no coincidence that the building crossed his path.
"Our logo is a lion, and when we first walked up to the building, we saw a gold-plated lion's head as a knocker. Then we walked in and saw the bar to the right. That was the cherry on top. That bar is in our current client seating area."
The building houses the Lovorn Law Firm but also serves as a gathering place for social events, including a recent meeting of the local Bar Association. But, whatever the occasion, Lovorn is never at a loss for words regarding his love for whiskey, particularly bourbon.
So what does he recommend for someone wanting to dip their toe into the bourbon barrel?
"I would recommend not going by the mainstream because we're so influenced by marketing and what other people like," Lovorn explains. "Put six bourbons and do a [blind] tasting and see what you like. You're looking for consistency, unique flavor, and smoothness."
He explains his process for tasting whiskey: "You take a sip, swish it around your mouth for a few seconds, then swallow it. It will be spicy and it will burn, but then you take the next swallow to get a real sense of it."
While Lovorn prefers bourbon, one can try several types of whiskey. Although multiple categories and sub-categories exist, you can distill them into a few general types.
Bourbon whiskey is an American whiskey made from a fermented mash of grains — most commonly corn — and aged in charred oak barrels. It is named after Bourbon County, Kentucky, where it originated in the late 18th Century. Bourbon whiskey is required by law to be made with at least 51% corn and aged for at least two years. It is known for its sweet and caramel-like flavor profile and is often enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in classic cocktails such as the “Old Fashioned” and the “Manhattan.”
Scotch whiskey is a type of whiskey that is made in Scotland and aged in oak barrels for a minimum of three years. It is made from malted barley and grains and is known for its smoky, peaty flavor. Unlike bourbon whiskey, there is no legal requirement for the percentage of grains used in its production but it must be distilled in Scotland. Scotch whiskey is often enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to bring out its complex flavors. It also serves as the base for classic cocktails such as the “Rob Roy” and the “Rusty Nail.”
Rye whiskey is made from at least 51% rye grains. It is typically aged in charred oak barrels for at least two years, although many rye enthusiasts prefer a longer
aging process. This whiskey is known for its spicy and robust flavor, often attributed to rye grains' use in the distillation process. It is a popular choice for cocktails like the “Manhattan” and the “Sazerac,” but can also be enjoyed neat or on the rocks.
Irish whiskey, as its name implies, originates in Ireland and is aged in oak barrels for a minimum of three years. Like Scotch whiskey, it is made from malted barley and grains but is known for its smoother and less smoky flavor profile. Irish whiskey is distilled three times, which contributes to its distinctive taste. It can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks and is also a popular ingredient in cocktails such as “Irish Coffee” and “Whiskey Sour.”
Japanese whiskey dates back to the 1920s. While similar to Scotch and Irish whiskey in that it is made from malted barley and grains, it is also known for its unique flavor profile, often including hints of fruit and spices. Japanese whiskey is typically distilled twice, which contributes to its smoothness. It can
be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or as a cocktail component like the “Japanese Highball” and the “Whiskey Sour.”
Blended whiskey combines different types of whiskey, typically a combination of malt and grain. The proportion of each whiskey can vary depending on the brand and the desired flavor profile. Blended whiskey is often aged in oak barrels to give it a smooth and mellow taste. It is a popular cocktail choice but can also be enjoyed neat or on the rocks.
Closing the conversation, Lovorn notes one particular common misconception about whiskey: he quickly pointed out that it's not just a man's drink. "I know a lot of females, and their go-to is bourbon."
As writer and whiskey enthusiast Reid Mitenbuler puts it: "Bourbon is a comfort food. As the world becomes more complex, bourbon remains simple… Bourbon connects us to a past that was somehow less complicated, and we've turned to it for relief from modern confusion."
“I'm a bourbon guy all the way. It's the holy grail, the unadulterated version of the spirit. I drink it neat or in an Old Fashioned."

Apples are the trademark fruit of fall, and with the many varieties to choose from, there is an apple that is sure to please any palate. They can be included in both sweet and savory dishes and are delicious and incredibly healthful. We all have heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” While they aren’t a cure-all, apples are packed full of polyphenols, antioxidants, vitamin C, B vitamins and fiber. Make the most of autumn’s best produce and the flavors of fall with these simple recipes.
Easier than pie but with all the same textures, this gooey warm dessert is sure to please. For simplicity, this can be made with a premade crust.
Crust:
• 1 1/2 cups flour
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cubed
• 1/4 cup iced cold water
Filling:
• 2 apples, peeled and sliced into thin slices
• 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
• 1 1/2 tablespoons flour
• 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• Caramel sauce
• Optional: 1/4 chopped walnuts or pecans
Crust:
(Note: If running short on time, store bought crust works great, too.)
Mix flour, salt and sugar together in a bowl. Cut in the butter. Add water and mix until moistened. Lightly knead the dough and then form into a ball. Next, flatten dough into a thick circular form and refrigerate for one hour.
Filling: Mix the apples, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar together in a bowl.
Assemble and Bake:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough into a circle and set on parchment paper. Arrange apples in center of dough, leaving about one inch of space for the edges. Fold crust over the apples and press to seal edges. Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with pecans or walnuts. Bake for 35 minutes. Serve with caramel sauce and ice-cream.

Exosomes are similar to stem cells in terms of their healing & regenerative properties, but they don't have the growth factor that can be harmful to some people.
Exosomes are taken from a portion of the placenta & the umbilical cord after birth & are then extensively tested for contamination or disease
The resulting complex contains the portion of the stem cell that is full of messengering RNA, which signals the body to ramp up healing & cell repair
Exosomes also contain tumor suppression cells.
When given intravenously (by IV) the body intelligently routes them to the area most in need.
