SATURDAY APRIL 12, 2025 10AM-5PM
Investment, by definition, is the act of devoting time, effort, energy, or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We can invest in a lot of things, such as our community, our relationships, our finances, and our health, with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact. We can invest in our community by supporting our local businesses, schools, and organizations. We can serve the community through volunteering and investing in future generations. On a larger scale, we can participate in public surveys and stay educated and involved with future city planning. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meet long-term financial goals, and secure our retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives who mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact not only on ourselves but also on those closest to us.
Time is the most valuable resource we have. Unlike money, talents, or materials, time cannot be regained once it is spent. So, how are we investing it? Are we prioritizing ourselves, our families, and our communities? Just as we budget our finances and talents, we should also budget our time. As we reflect on the importance of investment this month, it’s a good time to consider where our time is truly going. By focusing on what matters most—personal growth, relationships, faith, and giving back—we invest in a future that is both meaningful and fulfilling.
In this issue, we wanted to share some of the ways we can invest in our community, finances, homes, health, property care, and the people we love.

HOW MEYER MUSIC AND BAND OF ANGELS ARE CHANGING LIVES THROUGH THE LOVE OF MUSIC
For decades, Meyer Music has been more than just a place to buy instruments—it’s been a cornerstone of the Kansas City music community, fostering a love for music in students and families alike. What began as a vision by Ted and Betty Meyer has flourished into a lasting legacy, with their children—Tom, Mike, and Mitzi— continuing to serve musicians of all ages.
At the heart of Meyer Music is an unwavering dedication to making music accessible to all. Through their commitment to nurturing talent and breaking financial barriers, they empower students to develop skills that last a lifetime, proving that music is not just an art, but an invaluable investment in the future.
“My parents founded Meyer Music as a small retail shop,” Tom Meyer reflected. “It has since grown into a dynamic business offering piano sales, rentals, private lessons, and instrument repair.” Beyond serving musicians, Meyer Music supports music educators by providing a recital hall, complete with two grand pianos, at no charge. Their mission has always been clear: to ignite and nurture a lifelong love for music in every student who walks through their doors.
Meyer Music’s passion for music education extends far beyond the walls of their business. In 2010, in partnership with FOX4, they founded Band of Angels, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating financial barriers for students who dream of participating in school band and orchestra programs. Since its inception, Band of Angels has:
• Collected 12,000 donated instruments
• Matched 4,000 students with instruments
• Sent 600 students to summer music camps
• Shipped instruments to 20 states “Numerous success stories come to mind when thinking about the Band of Angels,” Mike Meyer shared. “One of the most inspiring is Destiny’s. As a young student, Destiny had a passion for music but lacked the means to afford a quality instrument. Through Band of Angels, she was provided with a trumpet, opening the door to countless opportunities. Destiny excelled in her school’s music program and earned a college scholarship. Today, she serves as the Student Liaison for Band of Angels, guiding other young musicians on their own journeys.”
Band of Angels does more than distribute instruments—it provides comprehensive support. Through its Beyond the Match program, students receive private lessons, upgraded instruments, financial assistance for band fees, performance opportunities, and access to scholarships for camps and college programs.
“Meyer Music has always believed in the power of collaboration,” Tom Meyer shared. “Working with organizations like the National Association of Music Merchants amplifies our voice in advocating for arts education.” This belief stems from Ted and Betty Meyer, both educators before

founding Meyer Music. Their commitment to music education extends beyond individual students, supporting school programs, and collaborating with national organizations to champion arts education. Meyer Music also sponsors workshops and luncheons for local piano teachers, fostering a community that uplifts both educators and students.
As Meyer Music approaches six decades of service, their mission remains strong—bringing the joy of music to future generations. Band of Angels continues to expand with ambitious goals, including new chapters in select cities. “At the heart of our efforts is a steadfast belief,” Tom Meyer shared, “No student should be denied the opportunity to pursue music because of financial barriers.”
The community plays a crucial role in keeping Meyer Music and Band of Angels thriving. Meyer Music isn’t just about selling instruments—it’s about creating a community where music is accessible to all.
If you have an unused instrument gathering dust, consider donating it to Band of Angels. Each instrument is either repaired and given to a student in need, or transformed into art through the Art That Blows fundraising event. Every contribution helps provide a child the opportunity to discover the life-changing power of music.

Troy Johnson never expected to end up running a pest control company, but life had other plans. Originally a dog trainer in Arkansas, Troy’s career path took a sharp turn when he became a bed bug dog handler for a large pest control company. His work allowed him to travel the country, meet experts in the field and gain hands-on experience in pest management. Within a year, Troy was promoted to branch manager and later oversaw multiple locations in Kansas City. But corporate life wasn’t for him.
“There was a better way to treat employees and customers,” Troy explains. “My stepdad always said, ‘If you don’t like the way something’s done, go do it yourself.’ So we did.” That philosophy became the foundation for Local Guy Pest Control , the small business Troy runs with his wife, Sarah.
Launching a business was no small leap of faith, but the Johnsons were ready for the challenge. During Troy’s non-compete period, he worked in foundation repair, which gave him a new perspective and even proved helpful in learning pest prevention. By May of their second year, Local Guy Pest Control became a full-time venture.
Local Guy Pest Control stands out by offering what many national companies don’t—flexibility, honesty, and a personal touch. While many competitors lock customers into subscription-based services, Troy believes in giving people options.
“We offer pay-as-you-go services,” he says. “We’re not going to push customers into something they don’t need. If it’s snowing in February, we’re not coming out just to check a box. We’ll come when it makes sense.”
The company’s core services focus on preventing issues before they arise. “If you have a problem, we’ll solve it,” Troy says. “But we’re also going to get to the root cause— why do you have ants every summer? We aim to be proactive, staying a season ahead to prevent problems before they start.”
Their mosquito control service, which also helps prevent fleas and ticks, is a gamechanger for families with pets. Troy shares that the service became a priority after learning from a neighbor that mosquitoes can transmit heartworms to dogs. “We realized how important it is to protect not just your home, but also your pets,” he says. “If you’ve got kids and dogs running around your backyard, mosquito control makes all the difference.”
Running a family business has been one of the most rewarding parts of Troy’s journey. “It’s a true family effort,” he says. Sarah works alongside him in the business, their son helps out on jobs, and their 8-year-old daughter even pitches in. “She went around the neighborhood and her school, selling pest control without being prompted,” Troy said.

“FOR US, CUSTOMER SERVICE ISN’T A POLICY - IT’S A CORE VALUE.” —TROY JOHNSON
While Local Guy Pest Control is still a small operation, Troy and Sarah have big plans for the future. “As we grow, we’ll hire people from our community—people we know and trust,” he explains. “We’re deeply rooted here in Blue Springs. We love the schools, we love the people.”
For Troy, owning a business has given him the freedom to build something the right way. “I’ve always liked business,” he says. “But more than that, I wanted to create a company that’s customer-first. For us, customer service isn’t a policy—it’s a core value.”
Troy encourages homeowners to get ahead of the seasons as they approach.
“Every year, we get last-minute calls for weddings, parties, and Fourth of July celebrations,” he says. “The key is to be proactive. If you wait until you’ve got ants or mosquitoes everywhere, it’s harder to control. Start early and stay ahead of the problem.”
For Troy and Sarah, Local Guy Pest Control isn’t just about getting rid of pests—it’s about building something meaningful for their family and their community. “We’re doing it our way,” Troy says. “And it’s working.”

Smart tips for spring renovations that boost value and enhance your space
Spring has a way of sneaking up on us—longer days, warmer breezes, and the urge to open the windows and start fresh. Around here, it doesn’t just mean blooming flowers and backyard barbecues; it signals the start of house project season. Whether updating a room, tackling long-overdue repairs, or finally bringing a dream design to life, this time of year makes us eager to roll up our sleeves and invest in our homes.
When it comes to investing, few things pay off quite like your home. Whether you’re planning to sell in the near future or simply want to enjoy an upgraded space, putting money back into your property is one of the smartest moves you can make. Chris Berry, owner of Berry Group Construction Company in Grain Valley, knows this firsthand.
“We’re about building,” Chris says simply. “I have always been a hands-on guy. I saw a gap in the market for quality, reliable work that’s done right, and I knew we could fill it.”
“Berry Group Construction specializes in turning houses into dream homes, offering services ranging from kitchen and bathroom remodels to decks, pergolas, fences, and full home renovations,” Chris explains. “These projects aren’t just cosmetic updates—they’re true investments that increase both the value and comfort of your home.”
When it comes to upgrades with the biggest return, Chris quickly points to kitchens and bathrooms. “Modernizing these high-traffic spaces is always a win, and creating open concept layouts continues to be a popular way to boost both functionality and resale value.” He also reminds homeowners not to overlook the power of curb appeal. A fresh coat of paint, new siding, and updated windows can completely transform a home’s first impression.
Chris emphasizes that while major renovations tend to take the spotlight, some often-overlooked improvements can yield impressive returns. Finishing a basement to add usable square footage, enhancing your garage with storage solutions or climate control, incorporating smart home features to appeal to modern buyers, and opting for composite decking are all upgrades that boost both functionality and value.
“Berry Group Construction turns houses into dream homes, offering renovations that boost both value and comfort, making them true investments, not just cosmetic updates.”
In today’s market, outdoor living isn’t just a bonus—it’s expected. “Decks, pergolas, fences... they extend your living space,” Chris explains. “A well-designed outdoor area adds curb appeal and creates that ‘wow’ factor buyers are looking for. People want a place to relax, entertain, and enjoy life at home.”
As for current trends in outdoor spaces, Chris has seen a significant shift toward more expansive features. Outdoor kitchens are becoming more elaborate, moving beyond the standard grill to include full cooking setups. Fire features like built-in fireplaces and fire pits are in high demand, adding ambiance and enabling year-round enjoyment. Multi-level decks and patios help define distinct spaces for dining, lounging, or play, and low-maintenance materials are favored for their durability and lasting beauty. Smart tech integration, such as lighting, sound systems, and even outdoor TVs, is becoming more common in today’s outdoor living spaces.
When it comes to maximizing your remodeling budget, Chris offers some straightforward advice. “Planning is key—going into a project with a clear scope and minimizing changes along the way can prevent costly surprises.” He stresses that prioritizing high-impact areas like the kitchen and bathroom helps ensure your investment is worth it. And while it’s tempting to chase the lowest bid, Chris recommends gathering multiple quotes and making sure the contractor you choose is the right fit for your vision.
“Berry Group Construction isn’t just about chasing the next job,” Chris says. “We’re focused on building strong relationships and delivering work people can count on. At the end of the day, it’s about creating spaces people love—and making sure the investment pays off.”
HOW IMOVE PT KC’S ONE-ON-ONE CARE AND INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY HELP YOU STAY ACTIVE, PAIN-FREE, AND INDEPENDENT
When it comes to investing, we often think of finances, careers, or even our homes. But what about our health? Unlike material possessions, our bodies are the foundation that supports everything else we do. When we prioritize our health today, we’re building a future with more freedom, less pain, and greater independence. Dr. Craig Lee, founder of iMove PT KC, is passionate about helping Kansas City residents make that investment through personalized, high-quality physical therapy brought directly to their doorstep. After witnessing traditional clinics prioritize volume over quality, Dr. Lee knew there had to be a better way. “Many clinics expect therapists to juggle two to three patients at a time,” he shares. “I wanted to deliver one-on-one, high-quality care without the chaos — and do it in a way that also saved our clients time.” That idea sparked the creation of iMove PT KC, a fully mobile physical therapy practice that meets clients where they are most comfortable — at home, the office, or wherever life happens. 1
Many people think of physical therapy only after surgery or an injury. But Dr. Lee encourages people to shift their mindset and see physical therapy as a proactive investment. “We all invest in something — our jobs, hobbies, families — but we often neglect our health until we’re forced to act,” Dr. Lee shared. “Making small investments now, like staying active and addressing minor aches before they become major issues, can pay off later with better mobility, fewer injuries, and a higher quality of life.”
It’s that focus on longevity that drives the team at iMove PT KC. “Who doesn’t want to be active with their grandkids or even great-grandkids?” Dr. Lee asks. “Life is physics. Objects in motion stay in motion.”
Beyond proactive care, iMove PT KC is also leveraging groundbreaking technology to redefine recovery. One of its most innovative tools is the Neubie device—the only one of its kind currently available in the Kansas City area. Unlike traditional therapy tools, the Neubie uses direct current (DC) stimulation to help reset faulty movement patterns and accelerate recovery.
“It’s a game-changer,” Dr. Lee explains. “This technology doesn’t just mask pain. It works with your nervous system to retrain muscles, reduce inflammation, and improve strength. It’s especially beneficial for post-surgery patients, older adults, athletes recovering from injuries, or anyone managing chronic pain.”
From sports injuries to post-surgical rehab and neurological conditions like stroke or MS, the Neubie allows patients to see faster results and lasting improvements without the added wear and tear on their bodies.
Investing in physical therapy today can save significant time, money, and discomfort down the road. Early intervention can help prevent surgeries, reduce the need for medications, and avoid repeat injuries — all leading to major healthcare savings.
Dr. Lee encourages people to view their health as a lifelong priority. “If we thought about our health the same way we think about our finances, we’d all be better off,” he says. “It starts small — a daily walk, parking a little farther away, taking the stairs. Movement is medicine.”
As iMove PT KC continues to grow, Dr. Lee and his team are committed to bringing the latest in physical therapy innovation directly to Kansas City’s doorsteps — helping the community stay active, independent, and thriving for years to come.
Beyond the convenience of avoiding drive time and waiting rooms, mobile PT provides a unique advantage: real-world problem-solving. “When we treat patients in their own environments, we see exactly what challenges they’re facing,” Dr. Lee explained. “Whether it’s navigating stairs, getting in and out of bed, or working safely at a standing desk, we create solutions tailored to their daily life — not just what works in a clinic.”
