Art in the High Desert is BACK in BEND at Riverbend Park across from the Old Mill District
AUGUST 23, 24, 25 - 2024
SHOW STARTS FRIDAY AT 5PM
Summer’s finally here! Time to slow things down and soak up the sun. Here in Central Oregon, our beautiful rivers play a big part in our summer fun—whether floating the river, kayaking, rafting, flyfishing or hiking alongside one.
This issue spotlights a few local organizations closely tied to our rivers—Central Oregon Flyfishers (COF), their subgroup, Wild Women of the Water (WWW), and Loot the Deschutes. COF and WWW are dedicated to helping people learn and experience the sport of flyfishing. Members of Loot the Deschutes dive for lost treasures and attempt to reunite found items with their owners. Along the way, they help keep the river free of debris and make room for new vegetation to grow.
Whether you choose to grab a flyfishing rod or kick back and float, I hope you find time to enjoy our rivers in the coming months.
Here’s to a fun and adventurous summer!

Central Oregon is undeniably a yearround Mecca for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. For many locals and visitors alike, flyfishing is a favorite pastime and passion. “Some people might not realize that we live in a flyfishing paradise,” notes current Central Oregon Flyfishers (COF) President Fred Cholick. “There are 50 places to fish in a 90-minute circle around Bend, so you have tremendous opportunities for fishing, and most are suitable for flyfishing.”

“IT’S VERY SELFREWARDING. PEACE, TRANQUILITY, CHALLENGE, JOY… IT’S WHAT DREW ME TO FLYFISHING,”
—FRED CHOLICK, PRESIDENT OF CENTRAL OREGON FLYFISHERS
Flyfishing is an ancient form of angling, or fishing, that has been around since the second century A.D. and was brought to North America by Europeans in the 1600’s. Flyfishing uses a special rod, reel, line and an ultra-lightweight artificial fly that mimics small flying or aquatic insects. “Flyfishing is challenging in many aspects, but in my opinion, it’s the purest form of fishing,” states Cholick.
If you are exploring ways to slow down, enjoy the outdoors and keep your mind engaged in learning new skills, flyfishing might be the key. “It’s very self-rewarding,” Cholick notes. “Peace, tranquility, challenge, joy . . . it’s what drew me to flyfishing.”
Fred Cholick, President
A local nonprofit organization founded in 1989, Central Oregon Flyfishers (COF) is committed to the sport of flyfishing and “broadening the public’s knowledge and understanding of Oregon’s aquatic resources.” With almost 250 members, COF is an active group of men, women and youth that works hard to fulfill their mission of promoting “preservation and conservation, for future generations, of Central Oregon’s watersheds and its fisheries through education, the practice of stewardship and the art of flyfishing.”
Cholick recalls his first time flyfishing with his dad along the Deschutes River when he was 14 years old. “I always say I hooked my first fish –and the fish hooked me on flyfishing.” It was this experience that led Cholick to dedicate a great deal of time in retirement to passing on his passion for flyfishing to younger generations. “I think

Kokanee Karnival / Next Cast
Through a partnership with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), COF helps facilitate the Kokanee Karnival, which began in 1996 and is geared toward fourth and fifth grade students across 30 Central Oregon schools reaching over 1,000 students, teachers, and parents annually. Topics and classes include caring for fish eggs through hatch and release, water quality and conservation, outdoor safety, and hands-on fishing experiences like tie flying, casting, and more.
Next Cast is a three-day flyfishing camp offered in cooperation with the Redmond Area Park & Recreation District. Youth ages 10-17 receive instruction on outdoor and water safety, bug identification, knot and fly-tying, casting and fishing to prepare youth to become proficient in flyfishing.
it’s our responsibility to develop the next generation . . . we have to instill that love of the outdoors and environment and I happen to use flyfishing as a tool,” states Cholick, who serves as co-coordinator for the Kokanee Karnival and coordinator for the Next Cast program, working with local youth in middle and high school.
“The joy of seeing the excitement and watching these kids catch their first fish is incredible. Just like you learn in leadership, that it’s the responsibility of the leader to develop the next leader, I believe it’s up to us to develop the next generation that enjoys being outside, and perhaps loves to flyfish,” Cholick says.
To find out more about flyfishing, Cholick recommends visiting a local fly shop to ask questions and find gear. He notes that YouTube is also an excellent resource as well.
“People think it’s expensive to get into flyfishing, but it doesn’t have to be. All you need is a rod, reel and line, flies, a net, a hook removal device, waders, and boots.” In the summer, Cholick says he wears shorts and shoes and “wet wades” to fish. As a reminder, just don’t forget the insect repellant and sunscreen, essentials for flyfishing in the high lakes and streams.
“One word that might describe what this sport offers is ‘fellowship,’” remarks Cholick. “One of the keys to fellowship is having a common denominator, and with COF, it’s that we all love to fish and that creates an environment for fellowship, friendship and community.”
Sue Coyle, Head of Wild Women of the Water
A member of COF for about ten years now, Sue Coyle heads up COF’s subgroup, Wild Women of the Water (WWW). “I joined COF before I even moved to Bend in 2015,” noted Coyle, who worked in end of life care with St. Charles for ten years. “I knew my move would mean a big life change for me, so when I found COF and Wild Women of the Water, I called one of the women, we talked for a bit and I joined right away.”
There are currently 74 women in WWW, which began about 15 years ago. “Women are the fastest growing demographic in many outdoor activities right now, the fastest growing for COF and, according to 2022 statistics, women from mid-20’s to 30’s are the fastest growing demographic for flyfishing,” states Coyle.
“THEY MIGHT FIND THAT FLYFISHING OPENS A WHOLE WORLD THEY NEVER KNEW EXISTED,”
Coyle has always enjoyed the outdoors and was introduced to flyfishing over 15 years ago by her son. “For me, flyfishing is restorative. Working in end-oflife care, I found the sport to be a form of self-care. Even if I don’t catch a fish, a day flyfishing is a spectacular one.”
WWW members stay busy gathering socially, fishing and camping together, visiting local fly shops, volunteering and even traveling together. Coyle also organizes regular outings and educational opportunities for the women.
“When I drive out to my favorite flyfishing spot on the Metolius River, my blood pressure lowers, my breathing slows, everything shifts,” Coyle explains. “It’s the anticipation of it, the rhythm of it all . . . it’s that first step down into the river, you breathe deep, pause, look around . . . your whole body responds to that. If you are lucky, you catch a fish, you are always careful to release it well. It’s a magnificent experience that I now share with my grandkids. We fish and we talk about everything without knowing we are –you are – introducing them to nature and having a wonderful generational experience.”
“Central Oregon Flyfishers, including Wild Women of the Water, are delightfully inclusive and very collaborative clubs with an amazing group of people who really put their efforts where they matter,” states Coyle. “If someone is feeling like this might be something they want to do, they should reach out to local clubs or visit local flyshops and ‘stick their toe in the water.’ They might find that it opens a whole world they never knew existed.”

Exploring Smart Solutions for Your Home's Outdoor Living Space
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI
PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATALIE STEPHENSON
Solution Screens are available in sizes up to 32 feet wide with a 20-foot drop making them a great option for your outdoor living spaces.
Chris Healam spent almost 10 years working for Tucson Rolling Shutters & Screens in Tucson, Arizona, an opportunity that allowed him to explore the products they offer, getting to know them inside and out. “A stereotypical start with sweeping floors which evolved into manufacturing to shipping,
“Using these products provides a great opportunity to create your four-season patio,”
receiving, installations, troubleshooting, research and development, and speaking with dealers across the states,” he says.
Last year, Chris founded Custom Shade Solutions, LLC, in his hometown of Redmond, in order to offer these innovative products to people living in the area. “I returned to Oregon, where I grew up, and pursued my Journeyman Electrical License, and now I'm applying for my Supervisor's Electrical License, which will complement the product install perfectly. I'm at a very good point where everything is coming together, and I'll be able to offer these products as a complete package.”
The products, which include full tension retractable solar screens, known as Solution Screens, rolling shutters and motorized SkyShades, are quite unique in the market. Each product is custom made to meet the requirements of each window, door or patio
opening and the needs of each client with a wide range of color options, fabric options, methods of operation (from manual to motorized to automated) and size.
“With the solar screens rolled down over a window, the privacy gained is incredible. You retain your view to the beautiful outdoors, but there is virtually no visibility from the outside into your home,” Healam notes. “And, then there are the energy savings as the heat that your home collects throughout the day is drastically diminished.”
Another great benefit is the UV protection for both people and their home interiors. “The fabric that the manufacturer uses blocks up to 99% of UV rays, and helps protect floors, furniture, and other items such as artwork. It's a multifaceted product for sure.”
Rolling shutters are another product offered by Custom Shade Solutions. These shutters are insulated

metal slats that roll down over windows, a concept quite popular in Europe. Explains Healam, “They are kind of like a mini rollup door, but these shutters are geared more towards total light blackout, inclement weather protection, privacy, and security. It was recently brought to my attention that this product might also bolster your defensible space during wildfire season.”
Customers might also use these screens and shutters to enclose patios. “Using these products provides a great opportunity to create your four-season patio,” says Healam. “During the warmer months, the screens and shutters will create a barrier against the intense sunlight and heat and can also double as a great wind block. As we head into the cooler months, these same products can help retain heat from a patio heater and prevent the outside elements from entering, essentially creating a comfortable space to enjoy year-round!”
SkyShades are also amazing. “These have been a long time coming,” states Healam. “While you have your retractable screens that are well known for operating in a vertical plane—up and down—the SkyShade is made to be deployed on a horizontal plane.” They’re great for covering patios, pergolas, and any open-air ceilings.
“A lot of people build these patio structures, but they're torn between a permanent roof or not having a roof at all. The SkyShades alleviate that polarizing choice. Deploy the shade when you want to lessen the sunlight and retract them at the push of a button to have an open-air pergola. It's simple and convenient,” says Healam.

—Chris Healam, owner, Custom Shade Solutions, LLC
Consumers can also be confident that if anything goes wrong with either the products or installation, it will be taken care of right away. “You’re getting a lifetime warranty on your motor, and a five-year warranty on all the parts,” Healam states. “Mermet®, the manufacturer of the fabrics, offers a limited 10-year fade resistant warranty on select fabrics.”
Custom Shade Solutions now provides a five-year warranty on all labor and stands behind every product offered. Healam installs everything himself because, he explains, “You can have the greatest product in the world, but if you don’t install it
properly, it’s not worth anything. I put my name on it. I stand behind it 100%. You're not just another number on the books to me, you're a person, you're a client. I have that personal relationship with all my clients, so if you ever have a question, you know you can get ahold of me.”
“I just want to make sure that the customer has a product that they want and the experience they want, whether it's with me or another company,” adds Healam. “I believe I offer the highest quality products and I'll give them the highest quality install. At the end of the day, a happy client is the best client.”

With the arrival of warmer days, it’s refreshing to shed the winter layers for summertime favorites, from swimsuits and sundresses, to shorts and short sleeves. If you are exploring self-care options to get your skin ready for summer, waxing might be on your list. The process of waxing has a rich history, with origins dating back to ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilizations. As beauty standards evolved in the early 20th century, waxing became popular in Europe and the U.S.
One local luxury wax-only salon, Urban Waxx, opened its doors in 2023. Womanowned and founded by Shannon Beekman in 2007, their Bend salon is Beekman’s ninth location, with other salons located in Portland, Eugene and Vancouver.
“In 2020, my husband and I relocated to Bend from Portland with our four kids,” Beekman says. “We had been hearing for years that we needed to open a location in Central Oregon, and it quickly became apparent that Bend would be the perfect location for Urban Waxx. We are thrilled to be here!”
At Urban Waxx, a core value is “over-thetop” customer service. Before becoming an esthetician and founding Urban Waxx, Beekman worked in the food and beverage industry in New York City. Through this experience, she realized the importance and impact of the quality of customer service. “I believe excellent guest service can have a profound impact on people’s lives. Creating memorable experiences, fostering genuine connections, and making someone’s day brighter is incredibly rewarding,” explains Beekman.
The team of estheticians at Urban Waxx are highly trained professionals who prioritize guest comfort and care. “Our expert estheticians utilize high quality products in a comfortable, chic atmosphere designed to provide guests with a pampering experience like no other, actively listening to our guests’
needs and making sure each feels satisfied and valued. We also deliver special touches to enhance the overall visit, offering a beverage like a mimosa, wine or sparkling water and snacks in a relaxing, spa-like environment,” Beekman notes.
Waxing might feel a bit intimidating, but Beekman wants guests to be assured that their team is highly experienced and enthusiastic, and they love what they do. “We are here to answer questions and make the entire experience fun and empowering. We work hard to deliver an extraordinary experience for every guest, helping raise self-esteem and confidence with each visit.”
Before your first appointment, Beekman suggests letting hair grow out to about ¼ inch, the longer the better to get a good first result. “To prepare for your first wax visit, ensure your hair is long enough for the wax to grip. Exfoliate beforehand to remove dead skin cells and avoid moisturizing right before your appointment. Communicate openly with your Waxer about any concerns or preferences, and most of all . . . just relax!”
Along with smoother skin and longer lasting results compared to shaving, waxing can also lead to reduced hair growth and finer regrowth. If you have sensitive skin, Beekman notes that waxing can be beneficial by reducing irritation compared to shaving, as it removes hair from the root, leading to smoother regrowth and potentially fewer ingrown hairs. “We specialize in waxes formulated specifically for sensitive skin, and combined with proper aftercare, sensitive skin can respond very well to waxing.”
Urban Waxx offers full body waxing and sugaring for all genders, from eyebrows to underarms, legs, back, Brazilian and more. Across their nine locations, Brazilian waxing is the most popular and they do over 40,000 annually. “We are also experts in brow waxing and also offer brow laminations,” Beekman adds.

Luxurious skincare essentials are some of the carefully curated retail products that guests can find for sale at Urban Waxx. One product, Serious Serum, was formulated and developed by Beekman specifically for Urban Waxx. “Each item we sell is selected with consideration to beauty and mindfulness, whether skincare, candles, jewelry, or bath care. Self-care is our focus.”
Not only is Beekman passionate about excellent guest service, she is also committed to her team of employees. “I wanted to create a salon environment with a positive culture that empowers everyone to find their best, most authentic selves because I believe in the transformative power of support and encouragement,” explains Beekman.
“By fostering a culture of positivity and empowerment, we uplift the individual and strengthen our entire community. Every person who walks through our doors should feel confident, inspired, and supported to chase their dreams and embrace their unique beauty. For me, cultivating a salon environment that champions women’s empowerment is not just a goal, but a heartfelt commitment.”
Founding Urban Waxx was a dream come true for Beekman. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see an idea blossom into reality, to create something from the ground up that adds value to people’s lives. What truly warms my heart is the relationships I’ve cultivated – with my team, our guests, and my community. Owning a business isn’t just about transactions, it’s about connections and establishing a network of support and inspiration that extends far beyond the walls of our salons.”

LOCAL GROUP EXPLORES THE RIVER TO CLEAN UP AND RETURN LOST ITEMS
ARTICLE BY JUILE E. FURNAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ODEN TOFTE AND LOOT THE DESCHUTES
Ever wonder what happens to all the lost items at the bottom of the Deschutes River? With determination and a little bit of luck and river exploration, some items get found and returned to their owners, thanks to local organization, Loot the Deschutes (LTD). Connecting with people who are searching for lost items through emails and Instagram, LTD reunites valuables to their owners. Along the way, they’re also helping keep the river ecosystem healthy by removing trash and making room for new riparian vegetation to grow, which helps keep our river at a high-quality level.
"We really want to show people that a small group of friends having fun can make all the difference."
—Lutra Wong, Member of Loot the Deschutes
The core members of LTD all met while doing what they had a passion for, gathering lost items, valuables, and even small treasures along areas with high river traffic.
Lled Smith – originally from Port Orford, Oregon, dives in the floating channels and whitewater parks. Before LTD officially formed, Smith used to post the valuables that he found on Craigslist. When he found a diamond ring and reunited it with its owner who had received it from her late husband, Smith decided that Instagram would be a better platform to post pictures, check messages and engage with people in real time looking for lost valuables.
Other core members include Lutra Wong, who has lived in Bend for 18 years and usually dives for treasure from Farewell Bend to Riverbend, and Drake Park; Kea and Miranda Eubank, who fill up empty float tubes with items found on the surface and below, between Sunriver and Crooked River; and Bend native, Radley Clothier, who concentrates his dives at the surfing and floating parks around the Old Mill. With the help of other volunteers, the core members all work in unison, searching, gathering, posting, and reuniting.
“There’re a couple different ways we get items back to owners. We all post everything we find in the river whether it's trash or treasure’ and by this time, a lot of people know about us so when they lose stuff in the river, they’ll go and hunt through our Instagram page, hoping to find it in one of our posts. If they don’t see it in our post or know how things work, they’ll reach out to us because someone usually tells them about us when they lose something,” explains Wong. Once an item is identified, members ask the potential owners to give them an approximate location of where the item was lost, a description and pictures if necessary. Members then meet up with the owner and reunite them with their items.
One look at the LTD Instagram page and the wide range of items they’ve found is unbelievable. From countless smartphones, sunglasses, surfing gear, rings to historical items such as an old logging peavey, coins and more – there is almost nothing that this group has not found.
“I think sometimes when people see the pics of our loot, they get angry thinking that the river has been really trashed by floaters or other user groups,” says Wong. “But on the contrary, it is quite clean down there, especially these days now that the awareness is higher. I know I see a healthy ecosystem of fish, plants, crawdads, and other wildlife when I dive. We really want to show people that a small group of friends having fun can make all the difference. And I think the most important thing for people to know is that it’s not all fun and games. It is a river and should be respected as it can be dangerous. Every time you enter a river whether swimming, floating, surfing, diving etc., you do assume that risk,” states Wong.

In the moments between fishing in our pond and swimming in the pool, our family will celebrate birthdays and have outdoor parties. True to form, I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way. My beach ball garland is a spin-off of the traditional balloon garland. Everyone uses balloon garlands… so let’s make one out of beach balls instead! Everyone serves a birthday cake… how about one carved out of a watermelon for a crazy twist?? I hope you join me in the making of these fun additions to a party!
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEANN PARKER
Have you ever noticed that when blown up, beach balls have a little plastic loop that forms where they are blown up and sealed? It makes for the perfect place to string twine through and use as an outdoor “balloon” garland! String it up, add some extra beach balls to the pool or yard and you have all the party decorations you need!
Materials
• 2 packs of assorted sized beach balls (assorted 20”, 16” and 12” for a total of 36)
• 1 pack of mini beach balls (5” sized, total of 25)
• Thin rope or twine
• Air pump
Instructions
1. Using an air pump, blow up all the beach balls... It takes a while!
2. Arrange inflated beach balls in a line on the ground, alternating sizes as you go.
3. Starting on one end, thread your string or twine through the blow loop of each beach ball until you reach the end.
4. Tie each end of your beach ball garland to a post or tack to a wall.
A cake that you could eat for breakfast! Made only of fruit and (if you want to go real crazy) some fresh mint and whipped cream too. A few years ago we started making watermelon cakes for our summer birthday celebrations due to one of our little ones suffering from food allergies. In order to make a cake that even she could enjoy, the watermelon cake was born in our lives. Even if you don’t have family or guests with food allergies, this cake is a thriller and loved by all!
Ingredients
• 2 large watermelons
• Assortment of berries and fruit
• 4 wooden skewers
• Toothpicks
• Whipped cream (optional)
• Fresh mint (optional)
Instructions
1. Prep both watermelons by cutting off the rinds and sculpting to create a cylinder shape with a flat top and bottom. Make the bottom cylinder bigger and the top cylinder slightly smaller.
2. Stack your smaller watermelon on top of the larger using wooden skewers to support the center.
3. Use assorted berries and fruit to decorate the outside of your watermelon cake. For the sides of the cake, use toothpicks to help the berries stay in place.
4. Serve alone or with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.
“I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way.”
