LIFE + CULTURE WITH STACY KEIBLER, KIMBERLY VAN DER BEEK, JAMIE LYNN SIGLER, GEN PADALECKI, BECCA TOBIN AND ODETTE ANNABLE
This is my 40th issue of Austin Lifestyle and perhaps my favorite yet. Although, I have said that before and when I look at all of the phenomenal humans we’ve had the opportunity to feature these last 40 issues, my heart swells because I love them all so much.
This issue is special for many reasons. It was one of those times I had a vision and had the great privilege of seeing it materialize, even bigger than my imagination. But, beyond the pretty pictures photographer Brittany Dawn Short captured of gorgeous cover stars Gen Padalecki, Kimberly Van Der Beek, Odette Annable, Stacy Keibler, Becca Tobin and Jamie Lynn Sigler that appear on the pages, these women epitomize female friendship life goals. Being able to capture a bit of that during a day where everyone prioritized time together for our shoot at The Menagerie in Fredericksburg was the real magic.
The theme of strong, authentic women is a thread throughout this issue where we speak to Krystal Patel, winemaker and owner of Meierstone Vineyards, about her transition from tech to wine and the tapestry of her rich family history. We chat with Y7 yoga founder Sarah Larson Levey on her expansion into Austin and get some thoughts on Austin from award-winning chef and owner of Diner Bar Mashama Bailey, whose next endeavor has taken her to Paris. Speaking of Paris – have you been to the Sezane pop-up store on South Congress yet? Our cover star Gen Padalecki hosted a cocktail party to celebrate its new location in Austin, where it’s set to stay until at least September! Loreal Sarkizian and Camille Styles also hosted fashionable fetes we share in this issue (with additional photos in the online story).
Enjoy! See you back in June for the Men's Issue. And, If you have any feedback, my inbox is always open.
Cheers,
PS: This month’s editor letter photo is from a mini bluebonnet session I did with Jeff Heyer @deeperstillphotography. The buds should bloom through the first couple of months of May and getting a few photos while breathing in the state flower’s intoxicating perfume is a great way to capture some memories.

Balmain & esby apparel host fashionable day and evening celebrations
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BIRNBALMAIN
Balmain brought high fashion to Austin during SXSW week. The radiant Loreal Sarkisian donned two looks while hosting a beautiful ladies luncheon at Lutie’s followed by shopping and bubbles in a room at The Commodore Perry estate. She was back for an intimate dinner that evening, this time striking in black and red, where she was joined by Olivier Rousteing, the designer for Paris fashion house since 2009, who earlier was the featured speaker at a session titled, “Melding Heritage and Innovation.”
ESBY APPAREL
Also during SXSW, esby apparel, a line of sustainable clothing and accessories designed in Austin, had a dinner hosted by Casa Zuma founder Camille Styles at Cross Cabin to celebrate the brand’s 10th anniversary. Guests dined on a delicious menu courtesy of Holiday on 7th, complimented with LALO Tequila cocktails. The festivities continued the next day during esbyfest where the lineup included panels and performances. Find additional photos from both parties at https://citylifestyle.com/austin.
Stylist Stephanie Coultress O’Neill brought racks of pretty dresses, pants, feminine blouses, shoes and jewels from her store estilo; Quenton Barnett and Kelsey James set up hair and makeup stations respectively in The Temptress Suite; Hill Country Herb Garden dropped off picnic baskets with a farmto-table lunch; OroBianco Italian Creamery set up a gelato cart by the pool; Cynthia Aguillón Bernard , aka ATX Yoga Girl, arranged crystal bowls in the backyard of the A Little Bit Alexis bungalow for a sound bath; Meierstone Vineyards owner and winemaker Krystal Patel set up a wine tasting. Johnny Was bags
were packed with goodies like gift certificates to Sage Restaurant and Slow North candles for the girls to take home. The stage was set to host a beautifully curated day away at The Menagerie in Fredericksburg for best friends Jamie Lynn Sigler, Becca Tobin, Genevieve Padalecki, Odette Annable, Kimberly Van Der Beek and Stacy Keibler – busy moms and creatives who welcomed the time to be present with ones they love. We caught a few wondrous moments on camera, and spoke to the women about the meaning of quality friendships, lessons they’d like to teach their daughters (where applicable), things they enjoy doing with their girlfriends in Austin and more.
ON QUALITY FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS It means I get to be my most authentic self and I am going to be heard, understood, and then given honest support and advice. They are the people I can be all my versions of myself with.
FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH GIRLFRIENDS IN AUSTIN is go out on a boat.
FAVORITE PART OF THE DAY AT THE MENAGERIE was getting to have a day
with some of my best friends, getting dressed up together and celebrating our friendship, what’s better than that?
OF THE GIRLS AT THE SHOOT I’ve known Stacy the longest , 22 years! But, all of these women have multiple avenues that could have connected us. That’s how I know they are my soul sisters. I love the many versions of ourselves there are and that we can have compassion for all of them.
ON QUALITY FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS It’s like having a partner in crime, someone who lets you be your true self. Like Mark Twain says, ‘Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.’
FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH GIRLFRIENDS IN AUSTIN is walking Lake Austin Trail, having coffee at Better Half, a beer at Idle Hands, a bite at The Well. Although the best ones are usually hangouts on my girlfriend’s couches lounging in sweats.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BEING A WOMAN IS embracing all the intricacies, challenges, and beauty it entails. It’s about
embodying strength, grace, femininity, grit, compassion and vulnerability.
I HOPE TO TEACH MY DAUGHTER to embrace who you are and where you are. Don’t apologize for being you. Be kind, but be strong. Listen, but also be heard. And run with the wolves. Own your wild. I love this quote from Women Who Run With Wolves ‘The way to maintain one’s connection to the wild is to ask yourself what it is that you want. This is the sorting of the seed from the dirt. One of the most important discriminations we can make in this matter is the difference between things that beckon to us and things that call from our souls.” Do not be afraid to listen to yourself. CONTINUED >
ON QUALITY FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS SHE SAYS I was raised by women who celebrated other women. The women in my family taught me that it is absolutely necessary to have female friendships, for they will teach you the most valuable lessons in life. I learned by example and have cultivated the most beautiful friendships that I treasure and protect and would most definitely call some soulmates.
FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH GIRLFRIENDS IN AUSTIN would have to be spending a day on a boat on Lake Austin and making a pit stop at Ski Shores for a boozy lunch with the girls. There’s nothing better than that to me.
THE DAY AT THE MENAGERIE, I truly enjoyed every bit of the well-curated day.
I love interior design and walking into the Menagerie for the first time was a visual feast. I spent time in each room admiring how thoughtfully designed each space was. I could have spent hours and hours just gazing at the interiors alone. Add my best friends with wine, sound baths, delicious food and ice cream? Dream Day.
SOMETHING I LOVE ABOUT BEING A WOMAN IS our complexity is never lost on me. I am fascinated by women and their stories and how capable we are. Of anything.
A TRAIT I HOPE YOU CAN TEACH MY DAUGHTERS IS resilience and the gift to not take yourself too seriously.
*Don’t forget to tune in to see Odette on Walker! Its fourth season started April 3!
ON QUALITY FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS Sisterhood means the world to me. Having friends that you can dance in this experience of life with, share a cup of tea and time in the garden with are a treasure. Life is such a journey and there are there during the highs and lows. I love that my children also get to benefit from a circle of women that I trust and have unique perspectives on life.
FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH GIRLFRIENDS IN AUSTIN I enjoy tea ceremony,
gardening and the occasional swing through Sunlife Organics.
THE WOMAN AT THE SHOOT I’VE KNOWN THE LONGEST is Stacy Keibler. We go back to our pre-baby eras.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BEING A WOMAN is being a mother.
I HOPE TO TEACH MY DAUGHTERS to trust your instincts.
ON QUALITY FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS Having girlfriends who are like sisters provides me with unconditional love, empowerment, and support for personal growth. My girlfriends enrich my life in so many ways and I don’t know where I would be without them!
WHEN I HANG OUT WITH MY GIRLFRIENDS some of our most cherished moments happen right at home. The best part is that our kids all get along so well. It’s been fantastic seeing them grow up together – some actually met back when we lived in California, and they were thrilled to reconnect here in Austin. The kids have a blast, playing games and keeping each other entertained and we can truly relax and enjoy each other’s company.
ON THE DAY AT THE MENAGERIE There’s something so special about being able to do a photo shoot like this with strong women who you admire—and who are also your best friends. We have fun no matter what we are doing, but I loved ATX Yoga Girl giving us a sound bath together,
followed by the 100% grass-fed buffalo milk gelato from OroBianco!
I LOVE BEING A WOMAN BECAUSE I get to experience the transformative experience of pregnancy and motherhood, which leads to personal growth, self-discovery, and a deeper understanding of myself. I also appreciate the strong bonds and connections I share with other women through these shared experiences.
I HOPE TO TEACH MY DAUGHTERS first and foremost to practice self-love. I am already trying to teach them the importance of compassion, kindness and generosity towards others. I hope to encourage self-confidence and to believe in themselves, their abilities and their worth. I also want to teach my daughters how to bounce back from setbacks, failures, and disappointments. I want to them to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. I hope I can help them grow into confident, compassionate, and resilient individuals who are empowered to thrive in all aspects of their lives!
ON QUALITY FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS Having quality female friendships means having a deep sense of security. I know that whatever happens in life, good or bad, I have a support system that will carry me through all of it.
FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH GIRLFRIENDS is going to one of our houses in sweats and no makeup to catch up, play games and eat delicious food.
IF I HAVE A DAUGHTER ONE DAY I’m going to tell her to always remember that no matter what messages you are receiving from society, there’s ALWAYS room at the table for everyone. Competing with other women instead of uniting with them will always make life harder.

1&2. JAMIE LYNN SIGLER NOT TODAY PAL AND MESSY
Jamie co-hosts “Not Today Pal” with her former “Sopranos” sibling Robert Iler, recorded locally at YMH Studios. The podcast centers around two best friends who are completely different finding common ground on various topics. The result, hilarious. Mid-March Jamie premiered MeSsy with Christina Applegate, sharing not often discussed details of living with MS as well as often raw, emotional and vulnerable conversations with celebrity guests and amongst themselves. These two powerhouse women are strong and funny so despite the levity of some of the topics, the tone is inspirational, educational, relatable and generally upbeat.
Kimberly co-hosts this podcast with her best friend Peggy Rometo, literally from the bathroom cabin of her property. The pair wanted to create a safe space to bring on guests to have real conversations, conversations many people are self-conscious or afraid to have in public, conversations that often happen among women in the bathroom.

Krystal Patel shares why she left tech to take the reins of the family farm
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BIRN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRITTANY DAWN SHORTKrystal Patel is a striking blond who exudes Texas charm and hospitality. The seventh-generation Texas native had a successful career leading strategy and operations for a tech company before going into the family business, as owner and winemaker at Meierstone Vineyards. Although they seem worlds apart, she explains, “My love for cellular and molecular microbiology and chemistry earned me an undergrad degree, after which I transitioned to business with an MBA, and later a Certified PMP layered with lean six-sigma training. Starting Meierstone Vineyards was a serendipitous culmination of all that knowledge, and it’s been fulfilling bringing it together through winemaking.” As the vineyard’s owner and winemaker she says “my actual duties range from janitor to cutting down mesquite and spraying cactus, to monthly legal reporting and accounting” but she adds she loves it because, “Aside from winemaking, which is truly a blend of art and science, I enjoy being on the property, sharing our story and introducing people to Texas wine.” Here’s more from our chat with Krystal on wine and her family’s rich history in Fredericksburg.
THE NAME MEIERSTONE VINEYARDS
My grandparents’ last name was Meier. They had an only child, my mother, who married and became a Stone. I, too, was an only child and married out of my last name, so I thought joining these two final, generational names would be a way to honor the family.
ON TRANSITIONING FROM TECH TO THE FAMILY BUSINESS
It was a post-COVID epiphany of the YOLO mantra and to stop putting off your dreams. It was about doing meaningful work every single day and enjoying the journey instead of reaching a destination.
Running remote global teams and sitting on Zoom calls all day found me retreating to our family farm near Fredericksburg on the weekends to unplug, recharge and reset for the week ahead. My grandparents passed a few years prior and the farm needed increasingly
more attention and management…So, I quit my job and jumped in with nothing more than determination and hope.
I’m a proud Texan and love all aspects of wine and how it connects people universally. My 20’s and 30’s were spent visiting numerous countries for agritourism. I grew up making wine with my grandmother, Dora Meier, in the farmhouse basement, and we’ve been making wine in my family for 7 generations here in Texas, so it seemed natural to keep the tradition going. The biggest reward for me is sharing the same inner peace I feel when I’m on the farm with others. There is something magical watching the cattle graze in the distance with the wind blowing over the crops like an ocean while sipping on a good glass of wine.
ON HER FAMILY’S LONG HISTORY IN TEXAS HILL COUNTRY…
Seven generations. In 1846, my triple-great grandfather, Jacob Brodbeck, immigrated from Germany and settled in the little town of Luckenbach, TX - just a few miles from our family farm. He was an inventor and watchmaker back in Germany and had a dream to fly like the birds he saw flying overhead his ship coming to America. So, he created a flying machine he called an “airship” to be flown by an “aeronaut” (himself) and drew up blueprints. He built and flew this biplane right here in the Texas Hill Country in 1865, almost 40 years before the Wright brothers. My grandfather, Albert Meier, only received an 8th grade education but read relentlessly every night. He invented a peanut harvester at age 16 and made a land-clearing device out of a giant steel ball and chains, which he used to develop farmland and clear Fort Hood military base. I love sharing Texas history through wine, so both inventions have wines named after them - the Airship and Wrecking Ball red blends.
ON LESSONS LEARNED FROM HER GRANDPARENTS…
They taught me the value of hard work and to be generous. Giving back to their community
was a constant they did regularly and discreetly. Grandpa also showed me that anything is possible with education and determination.
My grandmother was an avid winemaker! She made wine with the wild grapes growing on the farm as well as many types of fruit wines. She converted the farmhouse basement into her wine cellar and was known for her sweet and strong wines! I left her barrels and equipment intact just the way she left it and enjoy descending the squeaky, wooden staircase for moments of self-reflection.
Meierstone Vineyards wines are small batch, made by hand, 100% Texas, and rooted in history. I joke our wines are made “the romantic way” because we don’t have expensive, automated machinery and thus rely on muscle and faithful volunteers for bottling.
MEIRESTONE’S BEST-SELLING WINES
It’s a close tie between our two “wines with a story” - the Airship and the Wrecking Ball red blend. The Airship won “Top Texas Wine” at the 2024 Houston International Wine Competition and sold out within weeks, but the next vintage is now available and is even better!
The goal is to stay small and focus on producing high quality wine, provide an intimate experience for our guests, and do good in the community.
Meirestone wines can be enjoyed in their tasting room, located at 573 Meier-Stone Rd, Stonewall, TX 78671 or purchased online. They currently ship to 38 states.
Two-time James Beard Award-winning Chef Mashama Bailey achieved critical acclaim with her restaurant, The Grey, in Savannah, Georgia. Two years ago she opened Diner Bar in Austin where her Southern fare is served from the ground floor of The Thompson Hotel. Most recently she set her sights on Paris, home of her newest restaurant.
CHEF
MASHAMA BAILEY’S ON AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNEY ARTICLE BY DOMINIQUE BEJARANOWhile her career is layered, its start was simple. She tells Austin Lifestyle, “Acts of service is what drew me into cooking,” and says her inspiration was from moving to New York as a child and being exposed to several cultures all at the same time. “It had a heavy impact on my palette,” she shares, adding, “My food is noticeably international due to this experience. Moving to New York is when I realized how much I really liked the experience of setting the table with my grandmother, shopping, preparing, sharing. It all started to make sense to me. It gave me a sense of warmth.”
In her episode of Netflix “Chef’s Table,” Chef Bailey’s connection to her Southern roots shines as she explores the diversity of Savannah, from its everlasting Southern live oaks and vast African American history to scenes of the chef fishing for oysters in the marshes and preparing communal meals. These experiences highlight her integration of diverse and local flavor, all set against the backdrop of The Grey.
Expanding to Austin she says was “pure coincidence,” yet notes, “it felt really familiar like Savannah. We loved the college vibes, the music, food and comedy.” Visiting The Diner Bar, guests can indulge in a hearty burger, Southern grits or savor fresh oysters, reminiscent of Savannah’s coastal charm.
Charting a path for herself through the south in Georgia to New York’s bustling streets, Austin’s vibrant scene, and now the arrondissements of Paris, Chef Bailey is further cementing her legacy as a global culinary trailblazer.
Soothing earthtones, organic textures, and contemporary lighting are among the many carefully curated elements in this newly redesigned kitchen that showcase Alyssa Rome Design’s signature transitional style.

A chat with Sarah Larson Levy, co-founder of the coastal favorite yoga studio that opened in Austin early 2024
Transplants from the West Coast may know Y7 from their two popular studios in Los Angeles. From New York? There are six locations there! In January Y7 opened its first in Austin – the city the co-founder and her family have called home for the last three years. We caught up with her to learn more.
WHY THE NAME Y7? The Y represents Yoga and 7 is for the seven chakras.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR FIRST STUDIO? We opened our first location in 2013, originally as a pop-up. I’d been super frustrated with the yoga experiences I was having and always left the classes discouraged and feeling bad about myself. Y7 is dark and candlelit, with no mirrors and we use infrared heating technology to really get the sweat going. By taking away all the distractions of a traditional yoga room, it’s designed to bring your focus inward and allow you to truly be free to move your body how you want without feeling judged.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOGA? I love that the practice is focused on how we move our bodies as individuals and are able to adapt the poses to what feels right for our own bodies. It’s one of the only
things that challenges me both physically and mentally.
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE TO EXPAND TO AUSTIN? It’s such an incredible city and we have so many friends, clients and community members who moved here over the past few years - I knew we had to bring our experience here.
DO YOU HAVE PLANS TO EXPAND TO MORE CITIES? Absolutely!
DO YOU THINK YOU’LL EVER FRANCHISE? It’s been on our minds for sure - we will see!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT AUSTIN? I love the community here – it’s such a welcoming and kind place, we could not be more grateful to raise our family here.
WHERE’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN AUSTIN? I love Junes - the artichoke, a side of fries, and a glass of rose is my ultimate.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? To manipulate time - there are so many moments I wish I could slow down.

The Magic Mushroom, a blend of tequila, cucumber, sweet pepper, lime, and ashwagandha-infused agave served in a smoky glass mushroom is one of a trio of The Guest House’s instagrammable Alice in Wonderland-inspired cocktails. Not necessarily as made for the gram, but exceptionally delicious is their Espresso Martini made with ‘croissant-washed vodka’ and a hefty helping of creamy foam on top. Beyond the cocktails, we’d go back just for the brioche feuilletee and spicy rigatoni. The DJ at this Las Vegas import kicks up the volume around 8pm, so if a quiet dinner is more your speed, we suggest making a reservation earlier in the evening.

These tiny hamachi tacos are one of a few canapes on the menu at Prelude, an enchanting high-end cocktail bar owned by Chef Mathew Peters, whose esteemed culinary history includes being the first American chef to win the Bocuse d’Or, a global cooking competition, and spending the better part of a decade working at three-starred Michelin restaurants French Laundry and Per Se. Prelude is itself a prelude to Maven, a fine dining experience that will open in the same location in 2025.
Melanie Jacobs and Haven Tibbetts are the entrepreneurial, creative and innovative co-owners of Deep Roots ATX. They also have Skin by Deep Roots and they renovate, rent and flip real estate under the moniker The Property Sistas. This summer they’re expanding the Deep Roots ATX umbrella and adding a co-op alongside their three Deep Roots locations. Melanie told Austin Lifestyle, “Deep Roots Co-Op will be a way to give back to our current employees who have worked really hard scaling their careers and career opportunities. It will be a way to stay with our leadership, support and guidance but try something new on the business side of things by owning and being responsible for their own spot.” She explains that
it will be different than current booth rentals or suites because “it offers a way to run your own business but not be on your own. We will continue to support, guide, manage and educate our booth rental stylists and they will feel that community and the culture we have created with the three flagship locations. It will also be a way for our educators to keep educating while owning their own chair.’ She says this will be the first of a few planned co-ops and they also plan to provide franchise opportunities to their employees, climbing that ladder with founder support.
The first location for Deep Roots Co-Op will be located directly next to their flagship Cedar Park location at 1310 E Whitestone Blvd #560 Cedar Park, TX 78613.

A one-of-a-kind feature, which holds within it an intricate world of cogs and minutely crafted parts. Made of some of the most refined alloys, the Oyster case is incomparably resistant to all sorts of external aggressions. Yet no object so hermetic, so immovable, has ever opened the door to so many
possibilities. With its original patented design consisting of a bezel, a case back and a winding crown screwed down against the middle case, it profoundly changed the course of watchmaking history and set new standards of waterproofness for all wristwatches. To this day, the Oyster case continues to protect our watches and our movements within them. It stands as undeniable proof of our constant quest for reliability.
