Established in 2007 by Donald Peace

Donald’s love of surfing began one afternoon in 2005, when he was supposed to be going skateboarding with some friends, but instead of the Skatepark, they unexpectedly headed to the beach for a surf. Even though Donald couldn’t swim, or even float well at the time, he jumped in at the deep end and caught his first wave. From that point on, Donald realised that surfing was what he was meant to do.

He learnt to swim at the local leisure centre, gave up his job as a gardener, and then travelled to Cornwall and achieved his Surfing Instructor and Beach Lifeguard qualification.

Soon after qualifying, he started up his own surf school, ‘New Wave’, which in the early years was a mobile venture that saw Donald travelling along the Moray Coast to run lessons.

Born of a desire to share a passion for surfing, to earn a living, and to create a life balance

that meant both Donald and his wife, Kerry, could ensure spending as much quality time with their children (Hayden, Emily and Oliver) as possible, the surf school was a venture that provided everything that the young family needed for a contented and connected lifestyle.

Fast forward to 2021, the surf school is now a permanent fixture in Lossiemouth, and the whole Peace family are involved in the day to day running of it, from assisting with lessons, to washing out wetsuits and helping hire out equipment.

Since deciding to focus all efforts on their hometown of Lossiemouth, the surf school has gone from strength to strength. After securing the old hut at Gregory Place car park, Donald emptied it out, cleaned it up, repaired the roof and door, and built board racks and changing rooms inside. Despite the unassuming, old building that it runs from, the positive energy of the place is glaringly obvious.

NEW WAVE SURF SCHOOL 2

In the summer months especially, the surf school is not just a destination for holiday makers raring to try their hand at an exciting activity, or for locals to book their regular summer treat. It is also a place where people just pop by to say hello and chat for a while, sometimes sharing coffee and cake and stories of times gone by. There is a history to the surf hut, which some claim was an old ice house, and others remember as a store for canal dredging equipment. Regardless, the unique and mysterious building is a landmark that many passersby can’t help but fantasise over.

From this building, a small, friendly community of locals who are learning to surf has been created, where connection, fun, and wellbeing are at the forefront of the sessions that the Peace family provide. Local schools also enjoy the surf school as part of their Health Weeks, and many different community groups and individuals return time and time again for the feeling that only surfing can give - the Stoke!

Despite competing for Scotland as part of the Scottish Surfing Team over the years, both Donald and his eldest son, Hayden, are more inclined to soul surf, where the art of surfing and the connection to the ocean are a higher priority than scores. Competition is fun and gives an

opportunity to get together with other surfers from all over the UK, but it isn’t the driving force of surfing for the Peace family, or the focus of their inclusive surf school. Being in the water, surfing with the Moray Firth Dolphins, catching waves that glisten in the sunlight, and cheering on friends and family is what makes surfing such an immersive and joyful experience.

This is the vibe they hope to create and share with others who attend for lessons.

2020 saw New Wave’s busiest year yet for surf lessons and hire, despite the iconic Lossie Bridge being out of action. The surf school has been one of only a few opportunities for people to get across to the East Beach and spend time in the sea and on the beach itself, which has added to the charm and appeal of its presence.

2021 is looking to be just as busy as last year, with the new addition of Sup hire and Skateboard lessons, so there is now even more fun to be had!

“Do not book summer holidays”, warns Grant Shapps – So should we ignore his advice?

The subject of holidays – be it summer or winter – has been at the forefront of media attention for months now, and its fair to say the Nation is quite divided.

While many people are taking the view that international travel is irresponsible, many more are insisting that even the idea of an indulgent break is helping them to remain positive in an otherwise negative situation.

Whatever your situation, there are some points you should consider.

DIY v Travel Agent OK, I am a little biased here, but if the pandemic has highlighted anything, its that good, old fashioned high street travel agents were a customer’s secret weapon when it came to amending holidays, claiming refunds or even just for some advice. I personally know

TRAVEL
6

of many DIYers who are still waiting on an acknowledgment of a refund on a holiday that was cancelled back in April 2020!

Usually your travel agent will be comparable with online pricing, but even if it is a little more, the peace of mind, and financial protection you get pays dividends. Especially when something goes wrong.

Your local independent travel agent is also extremely well versed in things like travel entry requirements, visas, covid testing etc, and will have all of the answers so that you don’t have to worry about trawling the pages of conflicting online opinions to get yours.

When to book

There is little doubt that prices – once we are told we can travel – are going to rocket. With a large number of hotels and airlines now closed or bankrupt, there simply isn’t enough supply to fill demand. Despite media frenzy, it is not illegal to book a holiday. So why not take advantage of the prices while they are still relatively low, in the knowledge that your money is protected should you not be able to travel?

And with many companies now offering holidays as far away as 2023, you have plenty of time to save up for that holiday of a lifetime.

Flexibility

Many operators are offering extremely flexible booking conditions, with some allowing free cancellation or amendments as close as 30 days before travel. This means that should your own circumstances change, or should covid still be wreaking havoc, then again, you really have nothing to lose.

Check with your travel agent, as not all operators are offering such flexibility.

Refunds

A most contentious issue during the first wave, however the legal requirement is that in the event of the holiday being cancelled, the operator is required to provide you with a refund within 14 days.

This comes under the Package Travel Regulations 2018.

However, in real terms, these regulations were written to ensure that rogue operators couldn’t string their customers along – it was not designed for refunds on the scale that we saw in 2020. In any normal time, the operator would simply be able to refund from cashflow, however when every booking is being cancelled, this is physically not possible, especially when the money is being held by airlines or other suppliers.

So should you find yourself in the position of requiring a full refund, just be aware that although fully financially protected, the circumstances that the industry face mean that it’s very likely you will need to have a little patience.

In summary, if you are a keen traveller, you should consider getting your holidays booked, or at least planned asap – even if you don’t plan to go until 2022/2023, as you will be afforded the best prices, and most flexible terms.

PORTSOY BOAT FESTIVAL

Scottish Traditional Boat Festival Moves Online to Celebrate the Year of Coasts and Waters

Organisers of one Scotland’s leading celebrations of maritime heritage are delighted to reveal ambitious plans for a virtual offering in 2021.

The Scottish Traditional Boat Festival at Portsoy in Aberdeenshire will shift from a physical event a to digital festival due to the uncertainty that remains regarding the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions – with the backing of EventScotland as part of the Year of Coasts and Waters 20/21.

With public safety and protecting the local community their primary consideration, the boat festival committee have been working behind-the-scenes on innovative plans to stream a collection of bespoke video content to showcase the many facets of the flagship event which regularly attracts 16,000 to the North-east coastal town.

This virtual event will go live over the weekend June 25-27 . It is being flagged as a preview for next year’s showcase, with that the hope that the festival will return to Portsoy on June 17-19, 2022.

It will be the second year in a row that the festival has been postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

However, a virtual festival provides a different way to share the festival with a wider audience, both at home and abroad, as an opportunity to share some of the special elements which collectively make the festival unique.

Festival chairman David Urquhart said that the digital festival would shine a light on Portsoy and the wider area to viewers across the globe, as well as maintaining the festival’s reputation as a leading Scottish maritime event.

This year’s festival has been awarded funding from EventScotland as part of the Year of Coasts and Waters 20/21, and the creation of a truly memorable virtual festival will celebrate Scotland’s coasts and waters in a format which will shine a spotlight on these vital elements of our landscape.

The two-day boat festival began back in 1993, initially as a one-off event to mark the 300th anniversary of the historic Portsoy harbour. Since then, it has become a mainstay of the Scottish events calendar, attracting an international audience.

In 2019, it was crowned winner of the Best Cultural Event/Festival category at the Aberdeen City & Shire Tourism Awards. It was recently named festival of the year by Prestige Awards.

2020 was a challenging year for Portsoy Community Enterprise. In addition to cancelling the boat festival, its Salmon Bothy museum which annually attracts 3,000 visitors remained closed. Popular cultural festivals normally held in the Bothy’s upstairs meeting space were also called off due to restrictions.

The digital boat festival will showcase the area’s many assets to people both at home and abroad, seeking to inspire them to visit Portsoy and the Aberdeenshire coast once travel restrictions lift.

to Light the North

Local charity Clan Cancer Support is looking to Light the North this Autumn with an art sculpture trail. The sculpture trail will draw people to explore communities across the north-east and the northern isles to see 50 2.5m tall lighthouses designed by some of the UK’s most talented artists.

The trail starts on 9th August for ten weeks and also features 76 smaller lighthouses designed by schools and community groups. At the end of the trail, the 50 large lighthouses will be displayed and auctioned off to raise funds for the charity.

Fiona Fernie, Clan’s Head of Income Generation and Business Development, said, “We’re delighted to bring Light the North to so many communities throughout

CHARITY Local charity aiming
12

the north-east and Northern Isles. We’ve often heard our clients and people affected by cancer describe Clan as a ‘light in the dark’ during their cancer journey, making the symbology of lighthouses the perfect fit for our sculpture trail.”

Set to be one of the first major events in the north-east since the start of the pandemic, the team at Light the North hope that the trail can bring people together and allow people to rediscover communities across the region.

Fiona continued, “I think we’re all ready to get out and explore after a tough year, and we want Light the North to not only help to raise funds for Clan but to bring us all a little closer together. The trail takes you on the journey throughout the communities that Clan serves and celebrates fantastic artwork by professional artists from across the UK and local school children. The lighthouse trail is a great way to get out there to support a cherished local charity and reconnect with the wonderful people and communities we have across the north-east and Northern Isles.”

Light the North will shine a light across the north-east and Northern Isles helping to spread awareness and funds for Clan’s professional cancer support services. You can keep up to date with the trail by visiting: www.lightthenorth.co.uk

CATERING Fly Cup – It’s More Than Just A Cuppa…

Fly Cup Catering has established a reputation as one of the best places in Inverurie to enjoy a fly cup and a fine piece, but it is also something much more.

The organisation provides training and employment opportunities to adults with learning disabilities in the catering and hospitality sector. Started as a small project in 1995, and evolving to become a registered charity in 2000, Fly Cup has grown considerably since, and now operates as a well-developed catering establishment.

The facility now encompasses an industrially equipped bakery and kitchen, café, office and meeting and conference rooms, providing trainees with a range of opportunities to build their social skills, confidence, self-esteem, independence and ultimately their employability.

Trainees are often taken on as school leavers, and as such, the organisation also gets the privilege of assisting these young people on their journey into adulthood. This allows the gaining of both trust and a real insight into how to create a personalised training plan to support each trainee.

The charity is overseen by a Board of Trustee volunteers, who bring a wealth of experience across various business disciplines and a knowledge of adults with learning disabilities. The Board is supported by a team of hardworking staff, and a pool of local volunteers who assist with day-to-day operations, fundraising initiatives and more.

New volunteers are always very welcome to get involved and are encouraged to get in touch with the organisation to find out more about the roles available. Everyone involved has committed to the ethos and aims of the charity, and ultimately to the trainees, taking great reward from their efforts.

The organisation celebrated its 21st anniversary earlier this year, taking the opportunity to mark this significant milestone and its achievements with a virtual afternoon tea party which was enjoyed by trainees, staff, volunteers and friends past and present.

Fly Cup’s afternoon tea collection and delivery service has become an extremely popular additional offering by the organisation, introduced as lockdown restrictions forced a rethink of catering service options and new ways of working. Offering free afternoon tea deliveries in Inverurie and deliveries outwith for a small fee, Fly Cup has established a new and much sought after service, which has continued post lockdown.

A daily takeaway lunch service, and a meal collection and delivery service on Tuesdays and Thursdays were also introduced, with regular customer deliveries being made. The service is

16

set to continue, with menus posted on the Fly Cup Facebook page weekly in advance and new orders welcomed.

The outside catering service which was in place prior to lockdown has also resumed and orders are welcomed for events, functions and celebrations, with a variety of catering options available, including buffets, homebakes and celebration cakes. The trainees bring enthusiasm and creativity to their work, enjoying the challenge and results of creating a variety of produce and bakes.

The popular café recently underwent significant refurbishment, finally reopening its doors in May after the temporary Covid imposed lockdown restrictions, much to the delight of its customers. The refurbishment was made possible through securing available funding from the Community Recovery Fund, as well as by the generosity of a number of local companies and tradesmen who donated both time and materials, including Hendersons Ltd and Craigmile Contractors, and also Howdens, who offered competitive pricing options. Dolphin Drilling has also showed recent support with a donation of £4000 towards the purchase of a new oven in support of the traineeship programme. A reflection of the special place Fly Cup holds with many in the local community.

The café is now open Monday to Friday from 9am-4pm, offering breakfasts, fly cups, homebakes, snacks and lunches. Fly Cup is also keen to hear from customers their views on additional opening times and services, so if you have any feedback please do get in touch. Our friendly staff look forward to welcoming you very soon!

Rosie Barron is The Tidy Coo, a Professional Declutterer and Organiser, Certified KonMari Consultant and Photo Manager based in the North East of Scotland.

Books are an emotive category for many people. I’m an absolute bookworm, I love to read and often read over 100 books a year. However, there is no denying that physical books take up a lot of space and once a book is read, it’s often placed on the shelf never to be read again, that is if it is even read at all.

It is not unusual for me to go into people’s homes and find piles of books that haven’t been

read but which are piling up in corners. Some people buy books seeking the excitement of owning something new and the momentary euphoria that comes with that, but then rarely read all the books that they have bought.

The time to read a book is when it first enters your home.

Piles of unread books cause overwhelm and can decrease the amount of time you actually spend reading. Often when people release their enormous pile of unread books, they actually read more! Therefore, even for someone for whom books Spark a lot of Joy, I would still encourage you to audit your collection, however small or large.

Historically, books have been incredibly hard to get hold of. Initially copied by monks, they showed social status and were held in a sacred regard. Even up until more recent times, books were still expensive – something that you saved up for and

DE-CLUTTERING

certainly not something that you discarded when you were finished. As almost the only way to pass information between generations, they were, rightly, venerated. Now though, we live in the Information Age with access to everything at our fingertips on the internet, and yet there is still a cultural panic at the thought of letting books go - almost as if by letting the book go, you let the knowledge, or the fact that you read it, go. The books you read only contribute to who you are, they do not define you.

They are not your memories and releasing the book does not mean that the knowledge you gained will suddenly dissipate. Remember that someone, someday, will eventually be tasked with tossing your books. It is also worth remembering that even Libraries let go of books and publishers will regularly pulp books when they have too many.

The Key to this category, as with every category, is to Handle Everything. The books need to come off your shelves in order to be properly checked. I like to tell the story about my client who said that she was keeping all the Horse books in her collection, but as she handled every one, she actually decided that she didn’t need a 5th of them, and that one of them made her so angry that rather than let it go to a charity shop and risk someone picking up information that she considered inaccurate, she actually burned it. No one needs that kind of negative energy on their shelves!

Just like in every other category that we will cover, there is no right or wrong number of books that you should keep.

Things to consider when you are de-cluttering.

• Be wary of dust!

• Be careful handling large numbers of books and climbing up to get them.

• Consider your comfort – it may be worth putting them on a table.

• Small documents may be wedged in the book – check before discarding.

• Keep a notebook for interesting titles.

Initially, don’t worry about how you are going to discard the discards, just focus on what you are

keeping. As you check your books, you can ask yourself the following questions.

• How does it make you feel? What feeling or emotion will it be enhancing if it stays on your shelves?

• How long have you owned it? More than 6 months and you are unlikely to read it.

• Has it fulfilled its purpose? Will you read it or refer to it again?

• Are the contents current? Particularly with travel or text.

• How hard would it be to find again?

• Is it worth the real estate? How much space are you willing to give over to the storage of books?

• Does it reflect who you are right now rather than who you were in the past?

Once you have decided what to keep, you need to decide what to do with the ones you

are releasing. The sustainability page on my website www.thetidycoo.com has suggestions for places that you can sell or donate books.

In the future, think about your book buying. Make a note of titles that you want to read so that you have a note of them when you want to read them, rather than just buying them for the sake of it. Remember that there is a limit to the number that you can read at any one time. Consider using the library (can you set up a Mini Lending Library?) or digital versions. I know that many people do not like e-readers, but they have really improved recently. I have a paper-white which doesn’t hurt my eyes to read it.

An appointment with Michelle Williams is akin to two hours of the highest quality therapy. Initially I thought that an appointment to have my eyelashes done would be something that would cause me the utmost discomfort. First of all, there is the fact that you have to lie quite still on your back for the duration of the appointment; your eyes have to be constantly closed as Michelle works on your upper lashes; your lower lashes are kept in place

22
BEAUTY

by under eye gel pads to ensure that they do not become entangled and you are conscious of the fact that you really should not blink.

Not a recipe for comfort. But how wrong can you be? First of all, Michelle makes you very comfortable indeed on a specially designed couch (with a heat pad for my back) and – if you suffer from any back pain – she will always ask you if you need a break from lying still. The thought of having your eyes closed for two hours whilst someone affixes the best part of 500 small separate lashes leads you to believe that there is no way you will not be blinking at the rate of knots, as this is a procedure that dictates that you must blink – surely? But no. Amazingly so, the urge to blink away madly does not enter my head as Michelle painstakingly and very, very carefully separates the individual lashes from the strip and, with a delicate touch, a pair of tweezers and a dab of NovaLash’s award winning adhesive, affixes a ‘fan’ of several lashes to each and every one of my upper lashes. It may have helped that I had followed Michelle’s explicit instructions to refrain from any caffeine or sugar fixes for a couple of hours before my appointment. Who knew caffeine or sugar made your eyes blink!

This lady must have the patience of a saint, I muse, as she is sitting very still in the same position throughout the appointment while the lashes are put in place. It is patently obvious that Michelle has the utmost pride in what she does. She is such a perfectionist – is it any wonder that she has won so many awards in the relatively short space of time that she has been doing this. All the while she will talk about each step of the procedure so that her client (who must live in a dark world for two hours) is totally aware of what is happening. There are jokes, there are anecdotes and, all the while, this calm voice is informing me of what she has done, is doing and will be about to do.

Two hours fly by and there are no back twinges! It is with no small sense of trepidation that I look

in the mirror. Oh goodness – what a difference. Where before my eyes would tend to melt into my face they now are very much in evidence. But they are not sporting the kind of lashes that would create a force ten gale every time you blinked, no more are they the kind of lashes that are so very obviously not nature’s own creations – they look extremely natural and to say I am thrilled would be an understatement.

I leave Michelle’s salon feeling like a million dollars, with her carefully explained instructions on how to care for my new best friends ringing in my ears. Do I feel as if I could conquer the world? You bet!

Moray Concert Brass looks forward to a bright future

Moray Concert Brass has been a mainstay of the local music scene in Moray for almost 30 years, and despite the difficulties of the last year are looking forward to a bright future of music making and raising money for local charities.

The band was for many years part of Moray Council’s music instruction service and in that time, hundreds of young people benefited from the joy and discipline of playing in a band while also being active within local communities across the region doing regular concerts throughout the area and raising money for many local charities.

Last year, the band’s founder and musical director, Glenn Munro took early medical retirement, following ongoing cancer treatment, from his position as a musical instructor at the Council, so the band was developed as a local community band and gained charitable status in March 2020.

Prior to Covid I’m sure many of you enjoyed their concerts in Elgin Town Hall where

they played a variety of concerts like ‘An Evening of Rock and Pop’ which included tunes like Proud Mary, Mr Blue Sky, I Would do Anything for Love, Let Me Entertain You and Angels. Maybe the ‘Movie Concerts for Kids’ was the one you enjoyed with tunes such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Frozen, Star Wars and Flashdance.

You may have also heard ‘The Big Band Style’ which was also part of their repertoire including Sway, Birdland, My Way and MacArthur Park.

The band also travelled extensively and performed their concert tours in France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and Italy. I’m sure their music was much appreciated and is being missed. Hopefully they will be able to return in the not too distant future.

The band has not been able to meet in person since the first covid lockdown but they have not been idle and are currently having zoom rehearsals on Thursday

evenings, during term time. Mr Munro

We hope that we will be able to return to in person rehearsals in the Autumn, but until then we are meeting up online, with players able to play along to pieces and enjoy making music together all be it remotely.”

“Now we are a community band we would like anyone of any age, who would like to join us to get in touch. Although we are predominately a youth band, we have members of all ages and everyone is welcome. If you use to play but no longer have an instrument we may be able to lend you one. Even if you have not played for a while or are fairly new player there is a place for you in our band, some come and join us.”

The band currently has a membership of between 40 and 50 and the age range is from 10yrs old to over 60, the oldest at the moment being 68, but I’m not supposed to tell you that. Members are from across the whole of Moray. It is a great testament to the band that even those who leave to go to University etc come back during holidays and help out playing in concerts.

There is a wonderful selection of instruments in the band, trumpets. cornets, flugelhorns, tenor horns, baritones, trombones, euphoniums and tubas. There is also a percussion section with, drum kit, glockenspiel, xylophone, bass drum and timpani.

As the band is no longer part of the music instruction service it can no longer access the council’s musical instruments, but a generous grant of almost £7500 from The National Lottery Community Fund, made possible thanks to National Lottery players has allowed them to start their own collection of instruments, which will enable people to join the band and borrow an instrument.

Musical instruments are very expensive, a tenor horn can cost between £500-£900 and a BBb Bass Tuba, for example, costs in the region of £4400 so the band is still looking to buy more instruments so that they have a full range of instruments to lend. They therefore are looking for local sponsorship and if anyone local business or individual would like to help they would be delighted to hear from them.

The band can’t wait to get back to playing together and performing for you, the public, once again.

They are planning to bring their Brass for Hope concert which had world class soloists from London and USA performing, as soon as Covid restrictions allow.

With more great plans in the pipeline like another Magical Moments movie concert for kids as well as their 2022 Scottish Tour to Skye and Oban, it’s obvious Moray Concert Brass haven’t let Covid dampen their enthusiasm.

Mr Munro concluded by saying,“After the last difficult twelve months, making and listening to live music is, we think, a great way to help everyone rediscover the pleasure of living and help people to reconnect with their local communities. We look forward to welcoming the people of Moray to our band and to our concerts in the not too distant future.”

It’s widely recognised that the two most stressful events in life are getting married and moving home. Yet we often hear talk of that ‘dream wedding’ or ‘dream home’.

RE/MAX Elite are estate agents, so no surprise then that our focus is on the latter of those two events.

Working with the pandemic has of course had its challenges but it has been an amazing time to be an estate agent.

Not because the market has gone through the roof, though that certainly has been the case. No, the reason that this has been such an awesome time to be an estate agent is because like many other industries, we have been forced to adapt to survive. We have had to think outside the box to find new ways of doing business in an environment where health and safety has had to be our number one point of focus and this has led to some major improvements for our clients and their buyers. Whilst being in lock-down created pent up demand for a change of home, it was not something that was widely predicted. What was considered was that many people would be reluctant to list their home for sale because of the risks involved with having complete strangers wanting to view. The government

gave strong guidelines having considered home moves an essential service after the first lock-down and we had to make sure we not only followed these, but were seen to be doing so.

Another consideration was that even if we did have buyers wanting us to sell their homes, what could we do to minimise the risk of catching and spreading Covid 19? Masks and hand sanitiser were the obvious answer but it couldn’t stop there because of the risks involved, for example writing up and signing contracts. Our solution was simple, go digital, so the first major change was to scrap written contracts and produce electronic documents sent by email for e-signature, thus cutting down the amount of time spent in our client’s homes doing paperwork and the associated risks of transmission.

The next obvious issue was viewings, how could we do these and keep everybody safe?

Again there are government guidelines. These include the obvious wearing of face masks and use of hand sanitiser, restricting the numbers viewing at any given time and having the home owners out of the house and of course buyers had to have some sort of online viewing. At first many agents took video footage of houses, a simple solution that ticked the box but didn’t really help anyone.

28 PROPERTY • RE /MAX Elite

At RE/MAX Elite, we were already offering virtual tours, so we spent the time during the first lockdown learning how to improve these. Adding more content to help buyers with their research making it easier to buy by turning the virtual tour into an interactive property brochure with video content, packed with all the information buyers need to consider in order to make an offer.

There are several benefits of our virtual tour. Firstly, all buyers can view a home straight away without having to book an appointment. This saves a lot of frustration and makes looking for a new home easier. Buyers won’t view a home in person if they don’t like what they see in the virtual tour. This saves everyone time and cuts down on the number of unnecessary disruptions for our clients. Taking fewer physical viewings is also good for the environment as it cuts down the amount of traveling to and from various properties.

Our clients benefit greatly from this new way of doing things. No one really wants great swathes of people coming to view their personal space and there is nowhere more personal than your own home. Every time a viewing takes place, there is a panic to make sure everything is as it should be and home owners can get quite stressed. Now that nosey acquaintance, who just wants to snoop, gets to do so without you knowing or having to go to too much trouble. Those folk, who do visit, are much more likely to

want to buy your home so the disruption is more worthwhile.

The biggest benefit by far that we have seen though, is that there are folk who will view a property through one of our virtual tours and armed with a copy of the home report as back up, have made an offer to purchase a home without actually going to the house at all.

When the internet was first invented, we laughed at the thought of buying goods online, little did we know that one day, folk would use it to buy houses.

So how much do we charge for a virtual tour? It is after all, an amazing tool helping us to sell more homes, much faster and due to the increased number of buyers they attract, at higher prices!

The answer is that at RE/MAX Elite we took the decision that to charge extra, especially through a pandemic would seem mercenary. A brick layer doesn’t charge for his trowel, a mechanic doesn’t charge you for his tools either. So no, we do not charge for what looks like being a fantastic tool that will help attract more qualified buyers and help us get the best price for your home.

Make a Will for peace of mind

In 2020, the number of people looking to put their affairs in order by making a Will rose significantly. The global pandemic made us all think of our own health and what might happen if the worst occurred. Despite that, more than 50% of people in the UK do not have a Will. One of the universal truths in life is that death comes to us all. Why is it that we don’t put these arrangements in place?

There are likely many reasons, but, apart from our unease at considering our own mortality, the main one is cost. People believe that putting a Will in place is expensive, getting legal advice from a solicitor to put a Will in place, even more so. And yet, the costs of sorting out an intestate estate, when someone dies without a Will, or dealing with the unintended consequences of a do-ityourself Will, can cost far more than the legal advice to get it right in the first place.

In January 2021, the Law Society of Scotland introduced new guidance to solicitors on Price Transparency. Law firms are now being actively encouraged to put their pricing out there, so their clients, you the consumers, can see how much legal services will cost. There are

some difficulties with estimating some types of legal work, for example, court actions, where much depends on how long the case goes on for, and how complicated it is. However, with pieces of work like Wills and Powers of Attorney, most law firms offer a fixed fee arrangement, meaning you will know exactly how much it will cost to put these in place. Looking around at solicitors, comparing their prices with some of the non-legally qualified Will writing services, making sure there are no hidden, additional costs, is well worth the effort. Putting your Will in place using a solicitor, deciding yourself who you want to leave your money and belongings too, and being assured that will happen, is peace of mind and that alone is invaluable.

Yvonne Murray has turned a hobby of 25 years and a passion for teaching First Aid into a business.

Yvonne joined the British Red Cross after attending a First Aid at Work Course in 1998. The trainer was passionate, motivated, and committed to teaching. This inspired Yvonne to join the Red Cross as a first aider and attend events aiding individuals who found themselves injured or not feeling well.

Throughout her time volunteering Yvonne attended various events from Rock Ness, moto-cross, Highland Games, Olympic 2012 and Commonwealth Games 2014. Yvonne also volunteered with Keiran’s Legacy. This involved delivering lifelong skills of CPR and Defib training to young adults in Moray’s secondary schools.

Yvonne then started Pulse Training an approved training centre with Pro Training offering Level 6 First Aid at Work qualifications endorsed by SQA.

Under the First Aid (Health and Safety) Regulations 1981 employers have a responsibility to ensure that first aid provision in the workplace is sufficient according to their risk assessment.

The courses offered:

3 Day First Aid at Work course

An in-depth course enabling employees to take control of a first aid incident at work and manage it until the emergency services arrive. During the course you will develop an in depth understanding of CPR and the benefit of using a Defibrillator. Learn the importance of controlling bleeding, right treatment for a burn, how to recognise and treat a broken bone. Also learn about recognising a heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, diabetic emergencies. The certificate lasts for 3 years, the employee is then required to attend a 2-day refresher course.

FIRST AID
42

1 Day Emergency First Aid course

Suitable if the employers risk assessment states that they are in a low-risk work environment or for an individual who wants to learn lifesaving skills. This course covers the basic first aid subjects, CPR, bleeding, burns, broken bones, shock, stroke, and heart attack. It enables an employee to act in an emergency first aid situation until the First Aider at Work arrives. They do not have the same responsibilities as the First Aider at Work has.

Paediatric 1 Day Emergency and 2 day at work

Paediatric course

The Paediatric courses are suitable for individuals employed in a childcare environment. However, first aid is not just required in the workplace. Anyone can learn first aid as accidents happen anywhere any time.

K9 first aid

Whether you work with or just own a dog this could be for you

Safer people handling courses

This course is suitable for any individual working within the care environment where they are working hands on with people who have reduced movement. This course demonstrates safe handling techniques reducing the risk of injury to everyone involved. We cover the use of equipment including the use of a hoist, slide sheets, profile bed to name a few. This course is also suitable for informal carers who require a little guidance on how to move and assist their loved one after an accident or illness reduces their abilities.

Yvonne is an experienced RoSPA trained Safer People Handling trainer and a qualified occupational therapy assistant.

In the month of June

Yvonne would like to offer a free home visit to offer practical advice on moving and handling.

Pulse Training can deliver training at Unit 4 Tyock Business Centre, 36 Grampian Road, Elgin or the trainer will deliver on your work premises if you have a suitable training area.

Intricate DESIGNS

Maggi and George Dawson have been in business for number of years they opened their first shop in Cullen in 2018 at the top of Seafield St.

15th November 2020 saw them move into what was the old newsagents shop at the square after undertaking a major renovation. Unknown to them we were about to go into another lengthy lockdown.

Not to be deterred throughout lockdown they have constantly updated their shop window and continued to sell online.

Now the doors are open again and they are delighted to welcome everyone back.

There is an eclectic mix of products for you to view from the 36 crafters, including themselves, who are displayed throughout this beautiful shop.

From gorgeous scented candles, to intricately designed metalwork and woodwork and much more.

There is ample space for every crafter to showcase their products and for you to browse

safely following covid guidance.

All the crafters are local coming from between Banff and Elgin the furthest away is from Aberdeen.

Maggi and George originally opened the shop to sell their own woodwork. Once in and renovating the shop they realised that they could not make enough pieces to keep the shop and the large number of shows and events they normally attend at full stock. So they decided to invite local artists and crafters to come on board. This is a decision that has proved fruitful as they now have the type of shop they love shopping in themselves plus they have provided an outlet for many local crafters who can now make money from something they love doing.

There are many handmade pieces available to buy in the shop but both George and Maggi and many of their crafters offer a bespoke service for that something special.

They offer a bespoke laser engraving service too with their small laser engraver.

Open 6 days Thursday – Tuesday 10am – 5pm, Closed Wednesdays.

See their website and social media for a good selection of their stock which is added to daily.

Is it naïve to think you can influence your baby’s birth?

You’re pregnant. You know that one way or another your baby will be born, but is it ridiculous to think that you personally can impact how that happens?

Perhaps you are dreaming of a water birth with quiet music playing and experiencing all contractions with ease. Or maybe you’re dreading the birth but expecting to clench your teeth and push through (one of the worst things you can do!).

Have you considered that you are influencing every minute of every day through your thoughts, actions and attitude? You are influencing every second to support what you do or do not want. When we feel fear we breathe less effectively, and during labour that has a negative impact that can make labour more painful.

Whilst no-one (sadly me included) can guarantee you your dream birth, acting in a deliberate, intentional way can massively stack the odds of a better birth in your favour.

Here are five ways you can influence your birth:

1. Create a birthing space that feels safe and secure (dim lights, soft music).

2. Know your options so if you do need to deviate from a straightforward vaginal birth you’re still the one making the decisions.

3. Routinely practice all breathing techniques in the weeks leading up to birth.

4. Actively imagine birth going the way you want it to and always see yourself acting in a resourceful way. Olympic athletes swear by this type of mental rehearsal.

5. Stay as calm and relaxed as possible so that you are giving your body all the resources it needs to birth with greater ease.

These things make a massive difference. Whatever kind of birth you want there is plenty that you can do to steer it in the direction you want it to go. You are always moving towards or away from the type of birth you want.

Birth preparation and planning (even if it all goes out the window) can support you to feel calm, relaxed and confident before, during and after labour. Don’t leave it to chance.

Sophia Hanson is a prenatal yoga and hypnobirthing teacher based in the Highlands. She runs an online sanctuary, The Prenatal Snug, so you can prepare for the best birth possible (sophiahanson.com/services).

BEING Moray Youth take a lead for wellbeing and peer-support

Lockdown has been challenging for everyone especially young people. However, the Young Champions at Moray Wellbeing Hub have been supporting each other and making a difference for others throughout.

Becky, the Young Champion lead, hopes more under 25s will join in and feel the benefit that she has of the support and opportunity.

“Having my own lived experience of mental health challenges, it’s hard at times to be able to support others but this is where the social movement has been such an important invaluable resource; I have been able to find support among other people with lived experience. I don’t feel alone in the challenges I face in life.”

Working alongside inspiring organisations like the Elgin Youth Café, Becky has delivered courses and helped build new resources. This includes keeping important tools like the “Discover Pathways to Wellbeing in Moray” website resource up to date by involving Young Champions as young as eight to hear their views. The courses she has helped lead are really making a difference, the impact being that it is led by young people for young people. As one participant explained, they now feel more empowered by attending this kind of session, “You have the power to speak up and say how you feel, if you feel different reach out and ask for help so you can become you again.”

During lockdowns direct contact as also been key to keeping young people from feeling isolated. Becky has been running online get togethers, as well as calling and text messaging others, whatever they prefer. ‘Thank you for reaching out I’m having a bad day today… I’m

just going online to my course then some home schooling.” “Really enjoyed taking the time to do activities to think about our own self-care.” Has been some of the feedback. She’s working toward training other young people to help out, including exploring delivery in schools such as Speyside High School who are keen to see young people leading change and enjoying the feeling that comes from being part of something together.

Any young person who has experienced any kind of life challenge is welcomed at Moray Wellbeing Hub, and if they want to find out

been involved with course delivery and building new resources. I’ve been able to support people in my community.

“One of the great opportunities I’ve had is to deliver training to young people around well-being and having discussions with them to empower them to know that they can be a supporter as well as supported. I love getting involved and I love being able to support myself and others in their well-being. If you know a young person who might benefit then please get in touch as I’m always happy to give a warm welcome.”

more Becky is always on hand to share her journey. They might even follow in her footsteps and end up with a formal role and even employment.

“I started by coming along to a support group at Moray College and progressed from volunteer to a paid member of the team. Within my roles I have had so many opportunities to grow as a person and really get out my comfort zone. I have been to national conferences to be part of the wider conversation around well-being. I have
