An appointment with Michelle Williams is akin to two hours of the highest quality therapy. Initially I thought that an appointment to have my eyelashes done would be something that would cause me the utmost discomfort. First of all, there is the fact that you have to lie quite still on your back for the duration of the appointment; your eyes have to be constantly closed as Michelle works on your upper lashes; your lower lashes are kept in place by under eye gel pads to ensure that they do not become entangled and you are conscious of the fact that you really should not blink.

Not a recipe for comfort. But how wrong can you be? First of all, Michelle makes you very comfortable indeed on a specially designed couch (with a heat pad for my back) and – if you suffer from any back pain – she will always ask you if you need a break from lying still. The thought of having your eyes closed for two hours whilst someone affixes the best part of 500 small separate lashes leads you to believe that there is no way you will not be blinking at the rate of knots, as this is a procedure that dictates that you must blink – surely? But no. Amazingly so, the urge to blink away madly does not enter my head as Michelle painstakingly and very, very carefully separates the individual lashes from the strip and, with a delicate touch, a pair of tweezers and a dab of NovaLash’s award winning adhesive, affixes a ‘fan’ of several lashes to each and every one of my upper lashes. It may have helped that I had followed Michelle’s explicit instructions to refrain from any caffeine or sugar fixes for a couple of hours before my appointment. Who knew caffeine or sugar made your eyes blink!

This lady must have the patience of a saint, I muse, as she is sitting very still in the same position throughout the appointment while the lashes are put in place. It is patently obvious that Michelle has the utmost pride in what she does. She is such a perfectionist – is it any wonder that she has won so many awards in the relatively short space of time that she has been doing this. All the while she will talk about each step of the procedure so that her client (who must live in a dark world for two hours) is totally aware of what is happening. There are jokes, there are anecdotes and, all the while, this calm voice is informing me of what she has done, is doing and will be about to do.

Two hours fly by and there are no back twinges! It is with no small sense of trepidation that I look in the mirror. Oh goodness – what a difference. Where before my eyes would tend to melt into my face they now are very much in evidence. But they are not sporting the kind of lashes that would create a force ten gale every time you blinked, no more are they the kind of lashes that are so very obviously not nature’s own creations – they look extremely natural and to say I am thrilled would be an understatement.

I leave Michelle’s salon feeling like a million dollars, with her carefully explained instructions on how to care for my new best friends ringing in my ears. Do I feel as if I could conquer the world? You bet!
