Now after almost a decade living in Shanghai, Lorna has settled in Tettenhall where she has founded STUDIO MERIAN and is currently renovating her own family home.

STUDIO MERIAN is an interior architecture and design practice creating homes with soul and character. Each project is a reflection of the individuality of the client and their home.

Balancing functionality with a fluid sense of space, STUDIO MERIAN curates interiors that feel collected rather than composed. Weaving together much loved furniture and personal treasures with carefully sourced objects, distinctive lighting and contemporary art. Christmas is just around the corner, and what better way to get into the spirit but to start preparing your home with lots of cosy seasonal décor. I’ve listed my favourite up and coming Christmas styling trends for 2025 and tips on how to style them. Enjoy!

1. EARTHY, WARM & “MOCHA MOUSSE”- INSPIRED COLOUR PALETTES

Soft browns, rich warm neutrals: Mocha, taupe, caramel. Tones that feels grounded and comforting. Related to Pantone’s Mocha Mousse.

Mixed with natural greens (olive, cedar) and accents in muted gold, bronze rather than bright, harsh metallic’s.

2. MOODY ELEGANCE

Deep, dramatic tones: Burgundy, dark charcoal, forest green, moonlit silvers. Image: highly saturated, darker colour schemes that feel luxurious and a bit dramatic.

Velvet, rich textures and mixed metallics (burnished/ aged gold, silver) to add depth.

3. NATURE, SUSTAINABLE & ORGANIC ACCENTS

Use of natural materials: Wood, pine cones, dried florals, moss, and real evergreen branches.

Sustainability is important: more people choosing ethically sourced, reused and recycled décor rather than plastic/glitter where possible.

4. MIXED METALLICS & SOFT SHINE

Warm

Metallic

5. TEXTURE & LAYERING

Soft, tactile fabrics: Velvet, faux fur, Sherpa, heavy knits. These add warmth in colder months. Layers in décor: Layered rugs, throws, cushions, mixed materials. Also layering in the tree / garlands: Combining wood, fabric, metal, light.

6. MINIMALISM & CLEAN SILHOUETTES, CURATED LOOKS

A counterbalance to “more is more”: More people want spaces that feel peaceful, uncluttered, curated.

Think fewer ornaments but better quality / more meaningful items; natural greenery, simple but elegant; whitespace.

7. ELEVATED OUTDOOR / ENTRANCE DECOR

Greater emphasis on exterior presentation: Premium wreaths, strong lighting, weatherproof ornaments, projecting lights etc.

The front entry becomes part of the “wow” moment.

HOW YOU CAN USE THESE TRENDS

Start with your base palette (walls, larger furniture, main tree) then add accent colours based on trend.

Mix materials/textures: e.g., a velvet cushion + a wooden ornament + metallic candle holder = richness.

Use lighting to enhance mood: Soft warm LEDs, fairy lights, candles. In moody palettes, lighting contrast accentuates the drama.

For outdoors / entryways: Pick one statement item (wreath, door garland, lighting) rather than trying to “decorate everything.”

Reuse what you have where possible: Add touches that fit the season rather than overhaul completely. Vintage pieces + heirlooms are in.

Be intentional rather than “festive clutter”. Sometimes removing rather than adding gives a more chiselled, stylish look.

Leaks

We caught up with Ben Gamble of Cuttlestones Auctioneers & Valuers about his career, his most memorable moments in the saleroom, and life beyond the gavel.

Q: What first drew you into the world of antiques and auctions?

A: It was really the challenge of identifying and selling one-off, unusual items. No two days are the same, and you never quite know what’s going to come through the door.

Q: Do you remember the very first lot you ever sold under the hammer?

A: I do – it was a child’s green Raleigh bicycle, which sold for £18. It might not sound like much, but I still remember the buzz of that first sale.

Q: What’s the most unusual or surprising item you’ve ever seen come through the saleroom?

As I’m getting older, the furniture’s only getting heavier –memorabilia is much kinder on the back!

Q: If you could take home one dream item from history, what would it be?

A: Without a doubt, an Alberto Giacometti bronze sculpture. His work is just incredible.

Q: Have you ever had a “sleeper” lot?

A: Yes, early in my career we had a painting estimated at £100 that ended up making £10,000. That sort of surprise keeps you on your toes.

A: A tribal club that looked, to most people, like nothing more than a stick. To our amazement, it went on to sell for over £5,000!

Q: Do you have a personal favourite category of items?

A: It used to be furniture, but these days I’d say memorabilia.

Q: What’s the most exciting part of auction day for you?

A: The fall of the hammer on the final lot. There’s such a sense of completion and energy in the room.

Q: Do you get nervous when you’re on the rostrum?

A: Not at all – in fact, it’s my favourite place to be!

Q: What advice would you give to someone attending their first auction?

A: Definitely view the sale first, get a feel for the items… and then go and bid like mad!

helping nervous pets and wildlife through firework season

November and December bring festive celebrations, but for many nervous pets and local wildlife, these months can be a time of fear and stress. From Bonfire Night to New Year’s Eve, the loud bangs, bright flashes, and crowds of fireworks create a challenging environment for animals who find noise overwhelming.

Pets such as dogs and cats often show anxiety by hiding, barking excessively, or trying to escape. Wildlife including hedgehogs, birds, and bats can be easily disturbed from their natural habits which disrupts important activities like feeding and finding shelter during these crucial months.

Fortunately, there are ways to help. Creating a calm, secure space indoors for your pet is vital. Closing curtains and windows can reduce noise and block flashes of light, while playing soft music or white noise helps mask disruptive sounds. Pet Stop offers a range of special calming products designed to ease anxiety in pets, including pheromone diffusers, calming collars, sprays, and natural supplements. These can be a great addition

to your pet’s comfort plan but just remember to check with your vet for the best option.

During fireworks, avoid forcing pets outside or punishing fearful behaviour. Instead, offer gentle reassurance and stay calm yourself, as animals can sense our emotions.

Wildlife also needs protection. Avoid lighting bonfires near known hedgehog or bird habitats and always check leaf and wood piles before starting a fire. Providing fresh water and food in quiet, sheltered spots supports animals disrupted by the noise.

Community awareness helps too. Encourage neighbours to share firework plans and consider quieter displays or set times to reduce prolonged distress for animals.

With thoughtful preparation and kindness, we can help nervous pets and wildlife navigate the fireworks season with less fear, keeping them safe and comfortable until the celebrations settle.

connaught house vets

Vomiting and diarrhoea are common clinical signs in cats and dogs. They can range from mild clinical symptoms to life-threatening issues. For owners, that makes knowing the correct course of action difficult. There are a few red flags to be aware of: inability to keep water down, blood in the faeces or vomit, a swollen belly, unproductive retching, collapse, persistent vomiting, and any suspected toxin ingestion. If any of these are noted, immediate veterinary advice should be sought.

At the other end of the spectrum, some very mild cases can often be resolved with conservative care at home. Dogs and cats with vomiting should have a short period of starvation, not more than 24 hours. Those with diarrhoea should continue to be fed, but the frequency should be

Wolverhampton 01902 424725

increased and the volume reduced. A bland diet should be chosen ideally a commercial gastrointestinal diet, though boiled chicken (and a little rice for dogs) will do in a pinch. The lining of the intestine is often damaged during diarrhoea episodes, and supportive feeding offers nutritional support to aid healing. All rich treats should be stopped, and a probiotic can be started.

If conservative treatment doesn’t resolve the clinical signs within 48 hours, or if they worsen, then veterinary intervention should be considered. Treatment usually focuses on correcting fluid losses and providing medications to reduce nausea, while investigations are carried out to identify possible causes. Many serious illnesses can initially present as vomiting or diarrhoea, so vigilance is always important.

apartments are for those who follow the sun. With Floor 1 already sold out SSTC on this side of the building, homes on the upper floors are high in demand.

Apartments 19, 20 and 21 on Floor 2 enjoy elevated views across the rooftops of Coleham and long afternoons bathed in golden light. Pricing starts at £429,000. It’s the perfect setting for sunset lovers and anyone who enjoys lounging in the warmth of early evening.

And if you really can’t choose, head up to the newlylaunched Penthouse level with corner-plot apartments that boast panoramic views. From the luxury interiors and the generous balconies, you’ll appreciate the unique and uninterrupted vistas in every direction.

WICKED: FOR GOOD

DIRECTOR: JON M. CHU

Starring: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande

The land of Oz is about to change forever in Wicked: For Good, the breathtaking finale to one of the most beloved musicals of our time. Cynthia Erivo soars as Elphaba, the misunderstood witch whose journey from outcast to legend still grips the heart, while Ariana Grande shines as Glinda, balancing charm with newfound depth as the ties of friendship are tested. Expect goosebumps, tears, and the kind of show-stopping numbers that will linger long after the credits roll. This isn’t just Oz, it’s an event you’ll never forget.

FIRE & ASH

DIRECTOR: JAMES CAMERON

Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña

James Cameron once again expands the frontier of cinematic imagination in Avatar: Fire & Ash, the next epic chapter in Pandora’s saga. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña return as Jake Sully and Neytiri, whose family faces its most devastating trial yet. As fiery conflict erupts and an enemy forged in loss rises from the shadows, the battle for Pandora becomes not just a fight for survival, but a meditation on grief, resilience, and the power of unity. With groundbreaking visuals and an emotional core that burns brighter than ever, Cameron transforms the screen into cinema’s most ambitious odyssey.

THE RUNNING MAN

DIRECTOR: EDGAR WRIGHT

Starring: Glen Powell, Josh Brolin

Visionary filmmaker Edgar Wright reimagines Stephen King’s futuristic nightmare with pulse-pounding energy and razorsharp style. Glen Powell stars as a man forced into a deadly televised game where survival means outrunning not only brutal “stalkers” but also a society addicted to violence-asentertainment.Strap in for an infusion the high-stakes chase with biting social satire, whip-smart visuals, and relentless action. A thrilling cocktail that feels as timely as it is terrifying.

THE CHORAL

DIRECTOR: NICHOLAS HYTNER

Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Roger Allam

A sweeping, heartfelt drama, The Choral tells a story where music becomes both sanctuary and resistance in the shadow of war. Ralph Fiennes commands the screen as a stoic, haunted conductor who arrives in a Yorkshire town, reluctantly drawn into leading its struggling choir. Both he and the townsfolk he eventually bonds with navigate grief, hope, and the transformative force of song in a story that crescendos toward both heartbreak and triumph. With soaring performances and a stirring score, The Choral is a moving reminder that sometimes the strongest defiance comes not from silence but from harmony.

small school, big impact

At Newbridge Preparatory School, being small is our strength. In an environment where every child is known by name, we are able to offer something truly special — a tailored, nurturing education where pupils feel valued, understood, and empowered.

Our small class sizes mean no one gets lost in the crowd. Instead, each child receives the attention they deserve, allowing their talents to shine and their challenges to be met with support and encouragement. From the very first day, our children are seen — not just as learners, but as individuals with unique personalities, interests, and potential.

We stretch and challenge our pupils in the best sense of the word — encouraging ambition, resilience, and a love of discovery. Whether it’s diving into a gripping novel, solving a complex maths puzzle, or exploring the natural world in our expansive grounds, every

moment at Newbridge is designed to spark curiosity and confidence.

But academic success is just one part of the picture. We believe in developing well-rounded children who are kind, thoughtful, and ready to take on the world beyond our gates. Specialist teaching, holistic learning, and a strong sense of community ensure that Newbridge pupils leave us not only well-prepared for their next schools, but for life.

Small School, Big Impact, is not just a phrase — it is a promise. When children are truly known and inspired, their potential is limitless.

Come and see for yourself by booking a personal tour — we are proud of all that Newbridge has to offer and would love to show you how it could be the beginning of your child’s journey to confidence, curiosity, and success.

A DIARY OF EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES

autumn diary

Autumn has been a season of celebration for Nick and Royston. Still in the midst of renovating their beautiful home, their calendar has been packed with special events, milestone birthdays and opportunities to support causes close to their hearts.

Marking its fifth anniversary, the KMC Ball once again delivered a dazzling evening of glamour and generosity. Held at The Boathouse, Aston Marina, the ball raised vital funds for two incredible causes – the James Bulger Memorial Trust and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Nick and Royston were joined by their dear friend Claire Caudwell as guests enjoyed a champagne reception, a sumptuous three-course dinner and a line-up of sensational entertainment. Headlining the night was soul icon Beverley Knight, a highlight that made the evening especially meaningful for James’s mom, Denise, who is a devoted fan. Beverley’s passion for these causes shone through, making it a night to remember.

THE ENDEAVOUR PROJECT

The Midland Hotel in Manchester played host to a vibrant fundraising Friday in aid of the Endeavour Project. Hosted by the fabulous Boy Gorgeous, the event invited guests to step Back to the 80’s

Nick and Royston joined a lively crowd of supporters, including celebrity guest Tricia Penrose, to relive the decade’s bold fashions and infectious music. A daytime disco brought everyone to the dancefloor, with the celebrations continuing late into the night at the legendary New York, New York afterparty.

A SPECIAL CELEBRATION AT GRANTLEY HALL

When it came to celebrating the 60th birthday of their dear friend Julie Millard, Nick and Royston searched for a setting as special as the occasion. They found it at Grantley Hall – a breathtaking 17th-century estate on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.

Blending stately grandeur with contemporary elegance, the venue proved the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable celebration. After a pampering session at the hotel’s luxury spa, guests were treated to champagne and canapés, followed by a night of entertainment, DJ sets and dancing. The festivities carried on into the cocktail bar for an afterparty that capped off a weekend to remember. Nick and Royston have already vowed to return.

SOLIHULL GAY PRIDE – LOVE IS LOVE

History was made in Solihull as the town hosted its first-ever Gay Pride weekend, aptly themed Love is Love. The two-day celebration brought together thousands of visitors from all ages and backgrounds, creating a joyful showcase of LGBTQ+ pride and culture.

Nick and Royston were honoured to serve as special guests for the occasion. Royston proudly led the vibrant parade, dancing through the streets of Solihull for a mile alongside a rainbow of colour and energy. The weekend was filled with live music, laughter, and love, leaving the community already counting down the days to next year’s Pride.

discover goa

Goa is India’s smallest and wealthiest state attracting more than two million tourists annually, drawn to its beautiful beaches thronged with swaying palm trees, the sedate pace of life and World Heritage architecture.

Goa, ruled by the Portuguese for nearly 500 years, offers visitors a fascinating insight into a rich and vibrant culture and a colourful history.

To discover Goa’s historical Portuguese influence I visited the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site and an outstanding example of baroque architecture. Located in Old Goa, the basilica is the final resting place of St. Francis Xavier, a Basque Roman Catholic missionary who co founded the Society of Jesus. Known as the Apostle of the Indies he is considered one of the most notable missionaries and pilgrims from all over the world visit this site to view his elaborately decorated silver casket. The Basilica, consecrated in 1605, is recognised as a landmark of Christianity and I was enthralled.

The Sé Cathedral, the largest church in India, is also located in Old Goa. The cathedral, completed in 1619 was built to celebrate the victory of the Portuguese over a Muslim army, which resulted in the capture of Goa. This spectacular building reflects the Portuguese –Manueline architecture and features an impressive Tuscan exterior and a magnificent Corinthian interior, where several elaborate paintings are displayed and the baptismal font, dating back to 1532, was used by St. Francis Xavier.

Panaji, the capital of Goa, lies on the banks of the Madovi River and on the main square is another striking example of baroque architecture. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, surrounded by tall palm trees, features an ornate white façade with a large church bell, which was installed in 1871. This beautiful church was once a chapel, built by the Portuguese in 1541. Panaji, at that time, was the first port of call for Portuguese vessels sailing from Lisbon and the ship’s crews would frequent the chapel. The church was rebuilt in 1691 and is one of Goa’s main attractions.

For nature lovers, an early morning visit to the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, offers the ideal opportunity to admire the feathered residents and to hear the spellbinding birdsong. The sanctuary is located on the western tip of Charao Island and can be reached easily by taking the ferry from Ribandar Wharf, which is a 15 minute taxi ride from Panaji. This lush mangrove swamp covers 1.8 square kilometres and a wide variety of migratory and local birds including western reef heron and striated heron, little bittern, black bittern, red knot and jack snipe are attracted to this area. Flying foxes, jackals and crocodiles have been spotted and the watch-tower is the perfect spot to survey the beautiful surroundings.

To view another example of Mother Nature’s beauty and to experience an unforgettable adventure I made my way to Dudhsagar Falls, located on the Mandovi River, 60 kilometres from Panaji.

Although the site is not easy to get to and involves some arduous trekking for the inexperienced, you will be richly rewarded with a wonderful view of four tiers of cascading water tumbling down from over 300 metres.

Visitors are welcome to take a dip in the cool waters but should beware of the inquisitive local monkeys who are keen to examine the contents of unattended bags!

Goa offers an extensive selection of exotic beaches including Baga Beach, known for its crowded parties, enthusiastic nightlife and an abundance of beach shacks serving fresh seafood dishes. The popular water sports and dolphin cruises attract the hordes and national wind surfing competitions take place every year from September to November. For those seeking uninterrupted relaxation, Miramar Beach in Panjim is the ideal spot as there are no beach shacks and a more laid back vibe. After my extensive exploration I was keen to take a nap in the lap of luxury and headed to the Taj

Exotica Resort, which covers 56 acres and is located at Benaulim, a one hour drive from Panaji. On arrival, I was escorted to the check-in desk in a flash and I selected a luxury suite measuring 115 square metres. Located in the resort’s main building this sumptuously furnished suite, facing the Arabian Sea, consists of a separate living room with plush seating and a dining area and a bedroom featuring a large double bed swathed in cool, crisp linens and plump pillows. After a comfortable and deep slumber and a soothing bath in the luxurious tub, I headed for the Sala Da Pranzo for breakfast. I ordered the delicious homemade pancakes with maple syrup and a piping hot cup of tea and studied my itinerary for the day, which suggested a visit to the Benaulim or Vaddi beaches or a visit to the Jive Spa or activities including tennis, badminton, cricket or golf. I decided to head for the hotel’s pool and I selected a comfortable sun lounger. I ordered a glass of iced fresh orange juice and held my glass aloft to make a toast to gorgeous Goa and then I swiftly embarked on a wonderful snooze.

a red, white & cream christmas wedding dream

WINTER WEDDING MAGIC AT PENDRELL HALL FOR SYMONE & DAVID

There’s something truly magical about a winter wedding — the crisp air, twinkling lights and a festive warmth that only the season can bring. And for Symone and David’s December wedding at the breathtaking Pendrell Hall, magic was exactly what was delivered. With a stunning palette of classic Christmas red, crisp winter white and soft creamy touches, this wedding was the epitome of festive elegance.

vision to life

We had the absolute pleasure of bringing their floral vision to life — and as a handpicked supplier for Ensarb (the wonderful team behind Pendrell Hall and its sister venues... The Mill Barns, Foxtail Barns, The Ashes Barns, Hanbury Barns and Whistle Barn), we always feel so at home styling such a beautiful space, working alongside their fabulous event staff.

showstopper

The bridesmaids carried smaller versions of Symone’s bouquet — equally enchanting and full of that Christmassy charm. The groom’s buttonhole featured a single white rose with a dainty minicluster of florals and foliage to echo the bridal bouquet, carefully crafted to be light and refined. Groomsmen wore simplified versions, and for younger members of the party, we offered a magnetic option — no pins needed, making things easier for little suits and small hands!

Symone’s bridal bouquet was a true winter showstopper — a hand-tied posy that perfectly balanced traditional romance with seasonal charm. We combined velvety red and pure white roses in equal measure, interspersed with gold hypericum berries, white skimmia, nestled amongst soft layers of eucalyptus, parvi, ruscus, and wintery spruce to form a lush “underskirt” of foliage. Finishing touches included delicate gold accents for that festive sparkle and the bouquet was elegantly bound in ivory satin ribbon for a polished, timeless look.

One of the standout floral installations was the civil ceremony arrangement, a 3ft-wide front-facing display that felt loose, natural and grown-in, like a secret winter garden blooming just for the occasion. Designed in keeping with the bridal bouquet, it was later moved to the top table — giving it a second life during the wedding breakfast and framing the couple beautifully as they dined and toasted their new life together.

The drinks reception was also given the floral treatment with a large, festive hand-tie presented in one of our elegant glass vases (available to hire), complete with seasonal stems and a flourish of red panicum grass for a touch of texture and height. This arrangement mirrored the entrance flowers, offering guests a cohesive floral experience from the moment they stepped into the venue.

Everything about Symone and David’s wedding was full of heart, joy and the kind of magic only a Christmas wedding can bring. From the scent of fresh spruce to the glow of golden accents, it was a celebration that felt like a warm embrace on a frosty day.

To any brides dreaming of a cosy, romantic winter wedding, let this be your inspiration. Whether you’re envisioning classic reds and whites, shimmering golds, or rustic seasonal touches, we’d love to help bring your dream day to life. With the Ensarb venues providing the most beautiful backdrops and our passion for floral storytelling, your winter wedding could be just as magical.

It will soon be time to think about party season, how much do you like to dress up? Whether you love fringing or plunging necklines, fabulous jumpsuits or a tailored trouser suit the choice is endless, animal print is still key, just add a pair of sassy boots, the trench mac is a wardrobe staple & this season look out for leather like this gorgeous mac from M&S, gold hardware is on trend, buttons, belt buckles & statement jewellery . Protect your spine when you cook. When lifting heavy dishes and trays out of the oven, use both hands and make sure to bend your knees and hips – not your back. Take short breaks so that you are not standing for long periods of time to avoid putting strain on your spine.

the sounds of christmas you shouldn’t miss

Christmas and winter are full of sounds that bring joy –the laughter of family, the sparkle of festive music, and even the simple crunch of snow or frost underfoot. But if you live with hearing loss, some of these moments can feel muted or even missed altogether.

Busy family gatherings often mean background chatter that makes conversation harder to follow. Carol singing, Christmas films, the excited rustle of wrapping paper or the quiet crackle of a fire may not sound as clear as they once did. This can lead to frustration and a sense of being left out of the celebration.

The good news is there are ways to make the season easier to enjoy:

• Check your hearing aids – make sure they’re working properly before the festivities begin. Fresh batteries or a thorough service can make all the difference.

• Use assistive listening devices – TV streamers, remote microphones, or phone apps can help you hear more clearly during noisy events.

• Plan your environment – choose quieter corners or try to sit with your back against a wall for conversations or turn down background music when people are chatting.

• Let others know – friends and family can help by speaking clearly, facing you, and reducing interruptions.

By taking a few simple steps, you can reconnect with the sounds that make Christmas so special. Don’t let hearing loss stop you from enjoying every laugh, carol, and festive cheer this winter.

Tips to Care for Your Hearing and Hearing Aids This

Christmas:

• Keep them dry: Be mindful of rain, snow, and steamy kitchens. Store your hearing aids in a dry, safe place overnight.

• Watch the batteries: Carry spare batteries or ensure rechargeable aids are fully charged before events. Remember a 20min charge during the day can give upto an additional 3 hours of use!

• Clean regularly: Christmas cooking and dusty decorations can clog your devices — clean them gently each day. Remember to change the filters regularly

• Travel smart: Pack a hearing aid kit (batteries, cleaning tools, charger) when visiting family or going away.

• Don’t be afraid to ask: If you’re struggling to hear in a noisy room, ask others to speak clearly — people are happy to help!

Book a hearing check with us today and make sure you don’t miss a single sound this festive season. We can have you hearing again within a few days – just in time for Christmas!

Take care of your hearing — it’s one of the best gifts you have.

inheritance tax: planning ahead before the chancellor calls time

The Chancellor’s Autumn Budget on 26 November is expected to put inheritance tax (IHT) firmly back on the political agenda. For families who have worked hard to build wealth, the subject is rarely welcome.

Yet with speculation that allowances will remain frozen or reliefs reduced, it has never been more important to understand the rules and plan accordingly.

Understanding the Thresholds

Inheritance tax is charged at 40 percent on estates above the available allowances. At present, the nil-rate band is £325,000 per person. This threshold has been unchanged since 2009, despite a sharp rise in property values over the same period.

On top of this, there is the residence nil-rate band (RNRB), introduced in 2017, which provides an additional allowance of up to £175,000 per person when a main residence passes to direct descendants.

Combined, a married couple can currently shelter up to £1 million from inheritance tax, assuming their estate includes a qualifying home.

Beyond these thresholds, everything is taxed at 40 per cent. With average house prices across England and Wales now standing at over £280,000, many families find themselves caught in the IHT net without ever thinking of themselves as wealthy.

Why Do We Need To Think About This Now?

The freeze on allowances until at least 2028 means more estates will become liable each year through “fiscal drag.” Meanwhile, rumours swirl that the Chancellor may restrict key reliefs such as Business

Relief or introduce other measures.

For families, waiting until the rules change may not be the best approach. Acting early gives you more flexibility, more choice, and more peace of mind.

Practical Steps to Mitigate Liability

Inheritance tax planning does not need to be overly complex. A number of strategies exist to reduce exposure. The right solution will depend on your family circumstances, your time horizons, and the type of assets you own.

1. Make use of lifetime gifting

Each individual has an annual exemption of £3,000 per tax year. If unused, this can be carried forward for one year.

Small gifts of up to £250 per person per year are also exempt.

Regular gifts made from surplus income are immediately free from inheritance tax if they do not reduce your standard of living.

2. Consider larger gifts

Substantial gifts are known as “potentially exempt transfers.” If you survive seven years from the date of the gift, the value falls outside your estate.

Taper relief applies to reduce the tax due if you survive between three and seven years.

3. Trusts for control and protection

Placing assets into a trust can reduce the taxable value of your estate, while allowing you to retain some control

over how and when beneficiaries inherit.

Discretionary trusts can be structured to meet specific family goals, though careful professional advice is essential given possible future rule changes.

4. Life insurance

For some, the most straightforward solution is to take out a life insurance policy written in trust to cover the expected IHT bill.

This does not remove the tax liability, but ensures your beneficiaries have the liquidity to pay it without needing to sell assets.

5. Business Relief and agricultural assets

Shares in certain qualifying companies and agricultural property may benefit from 50 per cent or 100 per cent relief from inheritance tax.

This is a useful tool for people who have funds available to invest.

6. Charitable giving

Any legacy left to charity is free from inheritance tax. Moreover, if at least 10 per cent of your estate passes to charity, the IHT rate on the remainder is reduced from 40 per cent to 36 per cent.

Lifestyle and Legacy

Inheritance tax planning is not simply about reducing a bill. It is about deciding what legacy you want to leave, and how you want your family to benefit. Passing on wealth in a structured way can help children onto the housing ladder, support grandchildren through education, or create opportunities for the next

generation that might otherwise not exist.

It is also about lifestyle. Thoughtful planning can allow you to help loved ones during your lifetime, rather than leaving them to inherit after your death. With careful structuring, you can support family now while still maintaining the financial security you need for the rest of your life.

The Need for Advice

The rules surrounding inheritance tax are complex, and the political landscape is shifting. This article should not be regarded as specific financial advice. Always seek professional advice based upon your individual circumstances before taking action. The value of investments can rise and fall and you may not get back what you invested.

Looking Ahead

Whether the Budget on 26 November brings wholesale reform or subtle adjustments, one point remains clear. Inheritance tax is no longer a levy reserved for the very wealthy. It is a mainstream tax issue affecting a growing number of families.

The sooner you take action, the more options remain open. With allowances frozen and potential reforms ahead, the time to think about inheritance tax planning is now.

winter is the perfect time to get your affairs in order

As the year draws to a close and winter settles in, many of us find ourselves reflecting on what truly matters. The quieter months are often a time for family, conversation, and tying up loose ends which makes it the ideal season to get important affairs in order.

For everyone making or reviewing a Will is one of the most valuable steps you can take. A well-drafted Will provides clarity, ensures your wishes are respected, and spares your loved ones unnecessary stress at an already emotional time.

Good planning goes beyond a Will. Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) allow someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf should you become unable to do so.

Winter often gives us the space to focus on these

important tasks. With fewer distractions, setting aside an afternoon to get everything in place can bring lasting peace of mind.

Don’t leave things to chance. Without a valid Will, the law decides who inherits, which may not reflect your intentions. By acting now, you can step into the new year knowing your affairs are organised and your loved ones are protected.

Take control of your future today. Our friendly, experienced advisors are here to guide you through every step, making the process easy and stress-free.

love, law & letting go: what cohabiting couples need to know when they split

It’s the modern love story: you meet, you click, you move in — no rings, no fuss. But when romance fizzles out, cohabiting couples in England and Wales often face a harsh truth: the law doesn’t recognise “common-law marriage.”

Living together doesn’t give you the same legal rights as a married couple — no matter how long you’ve shared your life, your Netflix password, or even your children. And when the relationship ends, the emotional heartbreak is often matched by legal confusion.

Take the family home, for instance. If it’s in one person’s name, the other has no automatic right to a share. That’s where TLATA 1996 steps in — the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act. It allows a person to apply to the court for a Declaration of Ownership or an Order for Sale, forcing the sale of a jointly owned property when one party won’t cooperate. But it’s no quick fix — and proving your financial stake can be tough. Children? Parental rights and child maintenance remain —

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS FOR OVER 150 YEARS

but they’re handled separately.

So what’s the smart move? Planning. A cohabitation agreement can set clear terms from day one — from who owns what, to what happens if things fall apart.

Because while love may be priceless, break-ups can come with a bill — legally and emotionally.

Thinking of moving in?

Think legally too. When love ends, make sure you’re not left out in the cold to obtain legal advice relating to your current situation or find out more call Lisa Ridge on 01902 313311 or contact via email lisaridge@ thornessolicitors.co.uk.

vauxhall mokka

The market place is awash with SUV vehicles, I can’t think really of any manufacturer that is not represented in this particular category. Your choice is huge and for the discerning buyer I would suggest you have a look and check out Vauxhall and the new Mokka, writes Bob Hickman.

This latest generation is crisper, and a stylish vehicle, the re-designed front with the integrated lighting and angular look makes it a stand out vehicle. It has a very interesting aerodynamic shape and low drag factor which suggest economy at all times.

To make it easy for the buyer Vauxhall have really cut back on the number of variances. There is a Design, GS, and an Ultimate, therefore 3 choices to make. In the engine department there is 1.2-litre engine producing 136ps with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 130ps 1.2-litre turbo engine with auto box.

Interior space is more than adequate especially for the driver and front seat passenger, but let’s not overlook this is not a huge SUV, this is one of those in the mid-range so there is sufficient room in the back for a child seat and passengers, but only for the shorter journey. Boot space at 350 litres is more than adequate for most of your needs.

The Mokka proved able to deal with all the bumps and pot holes on our road system. In and around town the light steering and smallish dimensions always gave you a reassuring feeling, parking spaces were not too difficult to manoeuvre into. Whilst being an SUV it has a slightly raised suspension and a taller body which can equate to slightly better visibility but certainly nothing to get too excited about.

The Mokka is a reasonably quiet car to drive, long motorway journeys are therefore less stressful with no wind or tyre noise to give you a headache.

The driver benefits from a multi adjustable seat, the instrumentation is easy to understand and pretty useful. Driving the Mokka was simplicity in itself, aided by the electrically adjustable front door mirrors and adjustable multi adjustable steering wheel made driving the vehicle quite a pleasant companion, the automatic gear box worked very well anticipating my driving needs in all situations.

The interior has a twin screen set up with 2, 10” displays for the infotainment system and instrumentation. It does take some time to be able to get to know what does what but with the efficient steering wheel switches and dials, you need to think it through but if this is your purchase you would take the time to acclimatise yourself and become friendly with the Mokka. I was impressed that you get wireless Apple Play

and Android Auto, very useful to navigate in and around an unknown area.

The Climate control was also easy to find on the touchscreen but as regular readers will know, I am not a big lover of everything being controlled with the touchscreen.

My particular Mokka was the GS variant, this was the midrange vehicle and it incorporated an extensive amount of technological assistance for the driver. Lane Departure, traffic sign recognition, a driver drowsiness alert, forward collision alert, hill start assists and one of the features that you do really need, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

The GS Mokka with the 18” diamond cut wheels, high gloss front and rear bumper inserts and with the black roof, it really enhanced the overall external appearance.

I think if your budget for a SUV is reasonably sensible then the Mokka range start from just marginally over £20,000. The GS Mokka as tested, had an on the road price of £29,110, but the nice people at Vauxhall had added a 2-coat metallic paint at a further £650 making the price £29,660.

The Vauxhall Mokka has a 3-year or 60,000 miles warranty. I personally think you will be more than happy and content with this very stylish, lovely looking vehicle, that makes a statement and is to some extent slightly different from the plethora of other SUV’s.

toyota c-hr

There can be little doubt that the Toyota C-HR is a sleek, funky design, that not only looks a million dollars, it is also a fabulous car to drive and to be cocooned within, writes Bob Hickman.

Externally the C-HR has big headlights and small tail light and a wonderful 2-tone colour with more angles than you can count make it a stand out vehicle.

Interior space is excellent, the driver and front passenger can comfortably get themselves at ease. The high seats mean you get a great driving position with the driver getting multi-adjustment to the seat including the lumbar support.

I particularly liked the handling; the Toyota engineers have the suspension absolutely perfect. On awful quality roads, it just floated and when you took the vehicle on to a twisty “B” road it didn’t let down, so a bonus mark for the engineering work that has gone in to it. Sharp steering also aids the driving experience.

In and around town the C-HR really was in its element, the hybrid engine spent most of its time driving in electric mode, but breathe on the accelerator and the petrol engine kicked in without any discernible change in noise. At the end of a week in driving the C-HR and nearly 400 miles it was amazing to see that I had achieved 57mpg and another gauge indicated that in excess of 60% of its driving time had been in electric mode.

The GR Sport, as tested, had a flourish of extra items, the equipment included 20” alloy wheels, a wonderful head-up display on the windscreen to indicate speed and speed restrictions and a JBL audio system,

The infotainment system is controlled by a big screen in front of the driver, I like the factor that the controls for the heating were the good old-fashioned type, push a button and you didn’t have to detract the eyes to work it out. There was a tremendous amount of equipment on the steering wheel and your humble scribe does have to concede that this was just a little problematic working out which of the probably 11 buttons on the steering wheel actually altered the mode in which what you were trying to have a look at.

Android Auto and Apple Car Play were standard features on my vehicle and the Apple Car Play connected wirelessly to the i-phone and also if you left the i-Phone in the correct place it would charge wirelessly.

Rear seats for occupants were more than sufficient and the boot space for the size of the vehicle, I felt it was more than adequate for the vehicle.

The 2-litre engine produced 150bhp ally this to electric

motor and it is a powerful vehicle. With a 0-60 of 7.4 secs and a top speed of 112mph

Low CO emissions of 110g/km, means that it isn’t going to be horrendously expensive to run.

One particular feature was noticeable and if you look at the pictures carefully the door handles are flush, when you approach the vehicle and press the remote control the door handle then springs out and when you are on board and drive off there was a thud and that was all the door handles closing.

There can be little doubt that Toyota has a tremendous reputation when they build a car, they are long lasting, every new Toyota is eligible for the warranty protection of up to 10 years or 100,000 miles. This is made up of an initial 3-year warranty followed by 7-years of service activated. So, for the first 3 -years you can have it serviced at a place of their choice and when the new car warranty expires then an additional 12 months warranty if your vehicle is serviced at an authorised Toyota workshop. It may cost you a little bit extra to go down this route but the peace of mind of giving up to 10 years warranty really makes it checking out.

The Toyota C-HR vary in price from £31605, my GR Sport was £40960.
