Discover the new season garden furniture at Leekes
With longer days and warmer weather ahead, now is the perfect time to transform your outdoor space. At Leekes on Great Bridge Road in Bilston, they’re excited to unveil the latest collection of garden furniture, offering a wide range of styles, materials, and sizes to suit every home. Whether you have a compact balcony, a cosy patio, or a spacious garden, our carefully curated pieces will enhance your outdoor living experience with both comfort and elegance.
How to choose the perfect garden furniture
Selecting the right garden furniture is essential for creating a stylish and functional outdoor space. Here are some key factors to consider before making your choice:
1. Assess your outdoor space
Before investing in garden furniture, take a moment to measure your available space and think about how you plan to use it. A small patio may benefit from spacesaving solutions, while a larger garden can accommodate more substantial seating and dining options.
Compact areas: Opt for bistro sets, foldable chairs, or stackable furniture to maximise space.
Medium spaces: Consider modular sofas, four-seater dining sets, or sun loungers for versatility.
Large gardens: Spacious areas can feature full dining sets, large sectional sofas, or even garden daybeds for ultimate relaxation.
2. Choose the right materials
The material of your garden furniture plays a crucial role in durability, maintenance, and overall aesthetic. Here are some of the most popular choices:
Rattan: A timeless, low-maintenance option that blends seamlessly into both modern and traditional gardens.
Aluminium: Lightweight, rust-resistant, and contemporary, perfect for a sleek, minimalistic look.
3. Prioritise comfort and functionality
Comfort is just as important as style when it comes to outdoor furniture. To create a space where you can truly unwind, look for:
Deep-cushioned seating for maximum relaxation.
Adjustable or reclining chairs for flexible seating arrangements.
Extendable tables for hosting gatherings with ease.
Weather-resistant cushions that provide comfort while withstanding the elements.
4. Consider storage and maintenance
To keep your garden furniture looking its best for years to come, think about storage solutions and maintenance requirements:
Use weather-resistant covers to protect against rain and UV exposure.
Store cushions indoors when not in use or invest in an outdoor cushion storage box.
Opt for low-maintenance materials if you prefer hassle-free upkeep.
5. Explore leading brands at Leekes
At Leekes, we take pride in offering a carefully selected range of high quality garden furniture from leading brands, including Bramblecrest, Hartman, and Kettler. Our latest collection combines style, durability, and practicality to suit all outdoor spaces.

As spring 2025 approaches, interior design trends are embracing a blend of comfort, sustainability and bold aesthetics. Here are some key trends to consider for refreshing your living spaces.
WARM TONES AND RICH COLOURS
Designers are moving away from cool neutrals, introducing warm hues like burnt orange, moss green and deep burgundy to create inviting atmospheres. These colours can be incorporated through wall paints, textiles and accent pieces.
TEXTURED WALL TREATMENTS
Adding depth to interiors, textured wall treatments such as lime-wash, plaster and decorative panelling are gaining popularity. These elements provide a custom look and enhance the tactile experience of a room.
BOLD PATTERNS AND STATEMENT RUGS
Incorporating bold patterns through statement rugs or wallpapers, can infuse energy into a space. Geometric designs, floral and abstract motifs are particularly on-trend, offering a dynamic visual appeal.
MAXIMALIST TABLESCAPES
Elevate dining experiences with maximalist tablescapes, featuring layered textiles, mixed patterns and vintage-inspired tableware. This approach creates a rich, curated look that encourages personalisation. Need a special occasion tablescape arrangement? Please contact Jennifer for a quote.
INTEGRATED OUTDOOR LIVING
Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces remains a key trend. Incorporate elements like large windows, natural light and indoor plants to create a seamless connection with nature.
CURVED FURNITURE AND ORGANIC SHAPES
SUSTAINABLE AND NATURAL MATERIALS
There’s a continued emphasis on sustainability, with a focus on eco-friendly materials like reclaimed wood, natural stone and organic textiles. These materials not only reduce environmental impact but also add a timeless quality to home decor.
Furniture with curved lines and organic shapes continue to be favoured, offering a softer, more inviting aesthetic. Pieces like rounded sofas, circular coffee tables, and arched decor elements contribute to this trend.
SEASONAL FLORALS
If you’re looking for seasonal spring faux flowers, here are some popular and realistic options to brighten up your space
CHERRY BLOSSOMS
Delicate and airy, faux cherry blossoms bring a soft, romantic touch to your decor. They look great in tall vases or branches arranged in large containers.
TULIPS
A spring classic, faux tulips come in a variety of pastel and vibrant colours. High-quality silk tulips look incredibly realistic and are perfect for dining tables or entryway decor.
PEONIES
Peonies are lush and elegant, making them a great choice for spring arrangements. Opt for soft pinks, whites or corals for a fresh seasonal look.
RANUNCULUS
DAFFODILS
Bright yellow faux daffodils add a cheerful vibe and are ideal for welcoming spring indoors. They pair well with other spring flowers like hyacinths and tulips
HYDRANGEAS
Full and voluminous, faux hydrangeas in shades of blue, white or lavender can create a fresh and elegant look, perfect for centrepieces or large arrangements.
With layered petals and vibrant hues, faux ranunculus flowers bring a delicate and natural look, often mistaken for real blooms.
LILACS
Faux lilacs add a touch of cottage charm and can be arranged in rustic pitchers or glass vases for a simple yet stunning spring display.
FORSYTHIA BRANCHES
Known for their bright yellow blossoms, faux forsythia branches add height and a dramatic seasonal statement to mantels and entryways.
ANEMONES
With their striking dark centres, faux anemones are great for modern and minimalist floral arrangements in spring decor.
Would you like suggestions on where to buy high-quality faux flowers or how to style them for your home? Look no further… I have a fantastic selection of faux stems and can make, to order, your seasonal displays. Please contact Jennifer on 07977330011 for a quote.

keep the ‘spring’ in your pets step
With the lighter nights and sunnier spring days, comes more fun for your beloved pets. Time to play in the garden, go for longer walks, day trips or simply bask in the sun and breath in the beautiful spring air. But with Easter just around the corner there are a few things that you need to be aware of to keep your furry friends safe.
Hot cross buns can be dangerous to pets, grapes, sultanas, raisins and currants are highly toxic to dogs and cats, a very small quantity can lead to kidney failure. Chocolate is also dangerous for dogs, cats, rabbits and many other animals too, it contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to them and can actually be fatal. The darker the chocolate the more dangerous it is, so keep those Easter eggs out of reach and ensure that your children don’t share their chocolate goodies with their pet siblings.
Sweets are also a popular Easter treat but these too might be dangerous for your pets, some sweets contain an artificial sweetener called Xylitol, just a small amount can be toxic. In fact, this sweetener is also found in some nut butters, cakes, jams and ice cream too.
Why not make your pets some of their very own Easter treats, there are plenty of recipes for pet treats on the internet. You could get the kids to help you come up with
names for them and make them in different Easter shapes. You could even play a pet friendly version of an Easter egg hunt with your furry one, I’m sure they will sniff out those home-made treats in no time at all.
Many of you may have daffodils and lilies in the house over Easter, please take care because they are very dangerous to pets. Daffodils are toxic to dogs and cats; the flowers and leaves can be harmful if ingested. Lilies are highly toxic to cats, it only takes a small amount to be ingested for them to be poisoned. All parts of the plant are toxic, pollen may fall from the flower on to the cat’s coat and be ingested later when they groom themselves, they may eat a petal or even have a drink of water from the vase, this can lead to kidney failure. Kittens are particularly at risk as they explore their environment and can so easily ingest part of the lily. Certain varieties of lily are also dangerous to dogs and rabbits. Rabbits will try anything, so you have to be especially careful what you have in their environment.
Keep the ‘spring’ in everyone’s step and enjoy the lighter nights and warmer days!!!
Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

chicken thigh porchetta
stuffed with n’duja served with roast fennel salad
INGREDIENTS:
FOR THE CHICKEN PORCHETTA
6 large chicken thighs (about 200g - bone removed, skin-on)
2 shallots, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
100g N’duja
1 tsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped
1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves
Zest of 1 lemon
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for frying)
100ml dry white wine
150ml chicken stock
Butcher’s twine
FOR THE FENNEL SALAD
1 large fennel bulb, cut into wedges
A wedge of parmesan
Half a red onion
Marinated artichokes
A few fresh basil and Italian parsley leaves
Extra virgin olive oil
TO SERVE
Slice into thick rounds
Sourdough bread
Extra virgin olive oil
Optional sides: chilli butter, pesto, or tapenade
EQUIPMENT
Skillet, oven proof frying pan or sautee pan
Stirring Spoon, heat proof spatula
Chopping board
Raw meat chopping board
Cooks knife
Measuring spoons
Mixing bowls
Scales
Measuring jug
Butchers twine
Potato peeler
METHOD:
PREPARE THE CHICKEN THIGHS
Check the chicken thighs for any small bits of bone. Using a sharp knife, butterfly the thighs by cutting along one side of the flesh without piercing the skin, opening them out to double their size. Lay them skin-side down on a clean surface and season generously with salt and pepper.
MAKE THE N’DUJA STUFFING
Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced shallots, cooking until softened (about 5 minutes). Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute. Add the N’duja, breaking it up with a spoon as it melts into the mixture. Mix in the fresh rosemary, thyme, and lemon zest. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
ASSEMBLE THE CHICKEN ROLLS
Evenly spread the N’duja mixture over the seasoned chicken thighs. Roll each thigh as tightly as possible without squeezing out the filling. Secure with butcher’s twine, tying at 1-2 inch intervals to prevent them from opening during cooking.
SEAR THE CHICKEN
Heat 1-2 tbsp olive oil in an oven proof skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the chicken rolls on all sides until golden brown (about 8 minutes). Deglaze the pan with white wine, scraping up any browned bits, then pour in the chicken stock.
ROAST IN THE OVEN
Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven. Roast for 35-45 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 75°C (165°F). Once cooked, remove from the oven and loosely cover with foil. Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes.
PREPARE THE FENNEL SALAD
Toss the fennel in olive oil and roast for 12 minutes at 180˚C. Season with salt and pepper and then mix with fresh sliced red onion and the marinated artichoke pieces. Toss with a little olive oil and lemon juice and carefully arrange on your plates and shave some parmesan all over using a potato peeler.
SERVE
Slice the rested chicken rolls and arrange on the salad. Serve with basket of sour dough bread and butters, tapenade and pesto.

INTRODUCTION
Being that we’re indulging in Italian flavours, why not complement the meal with a boozy Italian dessert? This rich and indulgent Amaretto Affogato is the perfect way to finish—a luxurious blend of creamy vanilla gelato, bold espresso, and the warm nuttiness of amaretto. Simple yet utterly decadent, it’s Italy in a glass.
METHOD:
PREPARE THE GLASSES
Scoop one generous portion of gelato into each serving glass. If you have room place these into the freezer while you prepare the espresso.
BREW THE ESPRESSO
You need one shot minimum per person. An espresso machine is good but I’d invest in a large stove top Italian percolator. Failing this you can use a French press or filter coffee machine. It’s just not as good.
ADD THE AMARETTO
Pour 1 tbsp of amaretto over the gelato.
POUR THE ESPRESSO
Pour the espresso over the gelato whilst piping hot, this will melt the gelato creating a rich creamy blend.
GARNISH
To finish off your masterpiece crush amaretti biscuits over the top and shave the dark chocolate using the potato peeler. Move quickly so the gelato doesn’t melt too much. (You can prep the crushed biscuit and chocolate shavings in advance to save time when serving)
CHEF’S TIPS
For a non alcoholic version you can use an almond syrup. Experiment with other liqueurs like Frangelico with is hazelnut or Baileys Irish cream. Freeze your serving glasses before hand to keep the dessert cooler for longer.

an exciting year ahead for wrekin college
Sporting successes across multiple disciplines will see dozens of pupils from Wrekin College head to regional and national finals this year as musicians also tune up to bid for national accolades.
The string of notable achievements comes as the school gears up for an ambitious 2025 with several landmarks, anniversaries, new projects and new chapters packing the calendar this year.
Wrekin College will celebrate the 50th anniversary of welcoming girls to the school while also marking 100 years of York House.
It will also build on its historic relationship with Old Hall School which becomes Wrekin Prep in September.
The months leading up to the end of the academic year are peppered with sporting finals, music and drama performances and whole school events with an emphasis on maximising every opportunity for pupils.
proud that Wrekin had stepped up its determination to provide varied and ambitious opportunities for its pupils.
“I look ahead to 2025 and it is inspiring to see how much commitment there is among both staff and pupils to really push for their best and to believe that they can and will achieve amazing things,” he added.
“The positive drive and determination is across various disciplines and from both individuals and team efforts which is exactly what we want to see. It all helps to hone various skills and invaluable outlooks from leadership and confidence to resilience and a can-do attitude.
Both hockey and netball teams across the age ranges are celebrating county wins with a number now progressing to regional and national finals.
The school’s Concert and Jazz bands will be heading to Manchester in April to perform at the National Concert Band Festival finals hoping to come away with yet another prestigious national award.
This term has seen pupils busy in rehearsals and performances of A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen and putting the finishing touches to a much anticipated Musical Theatre Showcase.
Young entrepreneurs will run a pop-up market later this term with the chance to win a session on their own stall at Wellington Indoor Market.
Headteacher Mr Toby Spence said he felt immensely
“We started this year like every other encouraging our pupils to recognise the potential for them to develop their interests and their talents alongside their academic results and to never miss a chance to get involved.
“Personally I really relish seeing how they take on that challenge and I know that encouraging a lot of events where year groups are mixed and widely celebrating all effort sees a ripple effect of positive energy that joyfully sweeps up everyone and everything in its path. It is very much in the Wrekinian spirit.”
For a chance to find out more about what 2025 has in store for Wrekin College and take a tour of the facilities which include a 25m swimming pool, Business School, Music School, Dance Studio, two artificial playing surfaces, tennis courts and extensive playing fields visit the next open day on Saturday, March 29.

The British Hair Awards are the pinnacle of the hairdressing industry, celebrating the finest talents across the country. This year, the legacy of Nick and Royston - three-timewinners - continued as three finalists who began their careers at Royston Blythe vied for the top spot.
Among them was Nick Tucker, who moved from South Wales a decade ago to work alongside Royston at the Shrewsbury salon. Under the expert mentorship of Nick and Royston, he honed his craft building a reputation as a sought-after stylist working with numerous celebrities.
Following lockdown, Nick made the decision to stay in Wales and, with the unwavering support of Nick and Royston, he launched Nicholas James. Their bond remained strong and when Nick decided to enter the British Hair Awards, his mentors were honoured to support him.
The excitement peaked at The Grosvenor, where Nick and Royston joined his team for the grand final. When it was announced that Nick had won Wales and Southwest Hairdresser of the Year, the celebration was electric! An incredible achievement and a proud moment for all who have worked with him at Royston Blythe.
BALLS TO CANCER: A NIGHT OF GLAMOUR AND GIVING
Since its inception in 2011, Balls to Cancer has been a beacon of hope, offering vital support to those affected by cancer and also their families. Their annual charity ball has become a much-anticipated event, raising crucial funds and elevating awareness.
This year’s glamorous gathering took place at the stunning Grand Station, hosted by Mark Richards. Guests indulged in a decadent seasonal three-course dinner, with a dazzling line-up of celebrities and spectacular entertainment.
Among the famous faces asked to support the event were Nick and Royston, the legendary Bobby Ball and fan favourites The Malones from Gogglebox, all contributing to an unforgettable evening of generosity and celebration.
With next year’s tickets already secured, the countdown to another magical night has begun!
THE HALLS: ROYSTON TAKES CENTRE STAGE
This year saw Royston return to the spotlight in Snow White and The Seven Drag Queens. The Northeast Adult Pantomime embarked on a nationwide tour and invited Royston to make a special guest appearance at The Halls, playing the hilariously cheeky Magic Mirror.
Sharing the stage with an all-star cast, including Celebrity Big Brother winner David Potts and a lineup of RuPaul’s Drag Race queens, Royston delivered a show-stopping performance. His trademark wit and playful humour had the audience roaring with laughter.
Verdict? One night simply wasn’t enough! Encore, please!
JOANNE’S 60TH: A BIRTHDAY TO REMEMBER
Celebrating a milestone in true style, Jo Bridgwood marked her 60th birthday with an unforgettable weekend at the Old Vicarage, Worfield.
The festivities began with a champagne reception welcoming family and closest friends, including Nick and Royston, to the elegant black-tie affair. Jo looked breathtaking in a classic black evening gown, setting the tone for a night of sophistication and celebration.
The evening commenced with a heartfelt tribute from Nick, honouring their lifelong friendship, followed by an exquisite gourmet dinner and entertainment.
A truly special evening for a truly special lady. Cheers to Jo!
dubrovnik, the pearl of the adriatic
By Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist
Dubrovnik, in the southern region of Croatia and the Dalmatian province, borders the Federation of Bosnia Herzegovina and the Republic of Montenegro and is encircled by the Elaphite archipelago. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, this enchanting medieval city offers visitors a tantalising opportunity to take a glimpse into its rich and colourful tapestry of culture and history.
As a consequence of the break- up of Yugoslavia, Dubrovnik was besieged by Serbian and Montenegrin forces in 1991 and the city endured substantial damage caused by continuous shelling. Restoration and repairs projects, carried out under the direction of UNESCO, were sympathetic to the original styles and successful in preserving the character. To learn more I made my way up Srđ, a low mountain at a height of 1,352 feet, and headed for the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence located within Fort Imperial, which was built in 1810 during the Napoleonic Wars. Exhibits include a wide range of documents, photographs, weapons, explosive devices, maps, military equipment and video recordings including international news reports.
For brave souls keen to experience a new perspective of the city and beyond, the nearby cable car station is popular. Soaring high in the air you are sure to spot Lokrum, the 180 acres of wooded island where, it is said, Richard the Lionheart was shipwrecked and cast ashore in 1192.
I prefer to remain on terra firma and after appreciating the view of the Lawrence Fortress, which was built in the 11th century, and known as Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar, I headed back down the Srđ towards the Sponza Palace. Constructed between 1516 and 1522 the palace houses the national archives and one of the many striking features of the property is the ornate atrium, which was once a gathering place for traders. Luža Square, in front of the palace, is the site of the opening ceremony of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, which began in 1950 and is held from July 10th until the 25th August. More than 70 open-air theatre, opera and dance performances are held on the city’s squares and terraces and in fortresses, churches and palaces. One of the most popular events is the performance of Hamlet at the Lawrence Fortress and of course it sells out fast!
Whilst strolling around the meandering streets of the city I constantly admired the imposing walls, which are 1,940 metres high. During the 14th century, the walls were strengthened by 15 forts and again in the 15th century, to deter the Turks, additional forts were built until the entire town was encased. For an outstanding panoramic view of the city and eager to view the bright Croatian sunlight flooding over the terracotta roofs I made my way to the top terrace of Fort Minčenta, located on the highest point of the city walls. This fort, which was once square, was built in 1319 and in 1464 it was modified to form a circular shape. Fort Minčenta recently featured in the popular HBO series Game of Thrones and it is quite simply mesmerising.
Making my way to the Church of St. Blaze, another popular site, I stopped to admire Orlando’s Column,

which features the armoured knight bearing a sword and shield. Carved in 1418 by Antun Dubrovcanin, a local master, the statue is a symbol of Dubrovnik’s freedom and the celebration of the raising of the flag takes place here to mark the opening of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
The Church of St. Blaise is an outstanding example of the Baroque architectural style. St. Blaise, is the patron saint of the city and this dazzling church, was built in 1715 by Mario Gropelli, the Venetian sculptor and architect. The elaborate features on the façade include four magnificent Corinthian columns and a free standing statue of Saint Blaise and the interior of the church is ornately decorated and very detailed to enrapture the viewer.
Wandering around the cobbled stoned streets outside I decided to visit the 360 Restaurant, which is a short stroll away on Ul. Svetog Dominika. Recipient of a Michelin Star, this restaurant features a lovely terrace, which stretches along the medieval walls and the fortress of St John. The dining room, which features a kitchen encased with glass, allows diners to view a bevy of chefs creating two five course tasting and a la carte menus. The cuisine is inspired by local and Mediterranean flavours and ingredients and this is an exceptional dining experience. I opted for the succulent octopus and the flavours of the lime ravioli and fish soup were sublime and accompanied by a glass of the fresh and smooth Malavazia Istriana the flavours were enhanced perfectly.
Following my arduous explorations and feeling rather guilty after indulging in too many delicacies throughout my visit I hailed a local taxi and headed for the Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera Hotel for a leisurely lap or two in the gorgeous outdoor pool followed by a snooze on a comfortable sun lounger. Later in the evening I wondered around the verdant gardens leading down to the beach and after the hustle and bustle of the city this calm and relaxing retreat was just the ticket.
Accommodations include spacious and contemporary furnished one bedroom executive suites measuring 45sqm, which are located on the higher floors of the property. The separate lounge and bedroom both feature spacious balconies; the perfect spot for a pre or post dining tipple, and the floor to ceiling windows ensure that the areas are flooded with natural light.
In-house dining options include the Leut Restaurant, which serves a wide range of international and local dishes with an impressive wine menu. The extravagant buffet breakfast is first class and as I devoured a juicy slice of water melon and gazed upon the twinkling waters of the Adriatic I reflected on the words of George Bernard Shaw who visited the city in 1929 …. ‘If you want to see heaven on earth, come to Dubrovnik’.
‘And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make’.

will the changes in the rachel reeves budget affect you?
In the evolving landscape of UK taxation, recent developments following Rachel Reeves Budget on the 30th October 2024, without doubt necessitate a thorough reassessment of retirement and estate planning strategies. Notably, changes to Inheritance Tax (IHT) regulations concerning pensions, an uptick in financial gifting, and revised pension withdrawal approaches are at the forefront of these considerations.
Inclusion of Pensions in Inheritance Tax from April 2027
Historically, unspent defined contribution pension funds have been excluded from IHT calculations, allowing these funds to be passed to beneficiaries without incurring tax liabilities. However, commencing on 6 April 2027, this exemption will cease to exist. Any unused pension funds and death benefits will be incorporated into the value of an individual’s estate for IHT purposes. Consequently, if the total estate value surpasses the IHT threshold, beneficiaries could face a 40% tax on the excess amount.
This policy shift is anticipated to significantly impact estate planning. The Treasury projects an initial £640 million in revenue in the first year, escalating to over £6.2 billion by 2047! Given these substantial figures, individuals with defined contribution pensions should proactively review their estate plans to mitigate potential tax burdens.
Escalation in Financial Gifting Amid IHT Concerns
In response to the impending IHT changes, there has been a marked increase in individuals making financial gifts to family members. This strategy aims to reduce the
value of estates subject to IHT, leveraging current rules that exempt gifts from IHT if the donor survives for seven years after the gift is made.
Under existing regulations, each individual can gift up to £3,000 annually without any IHT implications. This is known as the annual exemption. Additionally, smaller gifts of up to £250 can be made to any number of individuals, provided they have not already received a gift from the donor’s annual exemption. It’s important to note that if the donor passes away within seven years of making a gift exceeding these allowances, the gift may become subject to IHT, with the tax rate tapering depending on the time elapsed since the gift was made. Given the potential for policy changes, such as extending the seven-year rule to ten years, individuals are increasingly motivated to make much more substantial gifts sooner rather than later. This pre-emptive action seeks to capitalise on the current regulations and minimize future tax liabilities.
I am already seeing some of my clients gifting substantially more than the £3,000 annual gift allowance to their children.
Re-evaluating Pension Withdrawal Strategies
The forthcoming inclusion of pensions in IHT calculations has prompted retirees to reconsider their pension withdrawal strategies as well. One approach gaining traction is the early withdrawal and utilisation of pension funds to minimize future tax exposure. By accessing and either spending or gifting pension savings during their lifetime, individuals can reduce the portion of their estate subject to IHT. However, this strategy requires careful
planning. Withdrawals from pension funds are typically subject to income tax, and substantial withdrawals could push individuals into higher tax brackets. Additionally, depleting pension funds prematurely may affect longterm financial security, especially considering potential longevity and future care needs. Therefore, it’s crucial to balance the desire to minimize IHT liabilities with the need to maintain sufficient resources for one’s retirement years.
Strategic Considerations Moving Forward
In light of these developments, it would be prudent to undertake a comprehensive review of your financial and estate planning strategies. Your financial adviser can help provide a personalised guide tailored to your circumstances. Potential strategies that you could consider include:
Use your Annual Gift Allowances: Regularly making use of the £3,000 annual exemption and the £250 small gift allowance can incrementally reduce the value of one’s estate over time.
Establishing Trusts: Trusts can be an effective tool for managing the distribution of assets and may offer certain tax advantages, depending on their structure and the assets involved.
Life Insurance Policies: Taking out life insurance policies written into trust can provide beneficiaries with funds to cover potential IHT liabilities, ensuring that the estate can be passed on as intended.
Pension Withdrawal Planning: Carefully planning pension withdrawals to balance income needs with
tax implications can help manage both income tax and future IHT exposure. Given the complexity of the tax landscape and the potential for future legislative changes, proactive and informed planning is essential. By staying abreast of policy developments and seeking advice, you can potentially navigate these changes effectively, ensuring that your financial legacy is preserved for future generations.
Conclusion
The increased complexity of financial planning, taxation and generational planning, means that taking action sooner rather than later is more important than ever. It is unlikely that waiting for change will be helpful. Better to understand what you can do now to alleviate the problem than delay for a later date.
This article should not be regarded as specific financial advice. Always seek professional advice based upon your individual circumstances before taking action. The value of investments can rise and fall and you may not get back what you invested.

Do You Have an Advance Decision/Living
Will? Why It Matters More Than You Think
Many people assume their loved ones will make the right medical choices for them if they become seriously ill. But what if you couldn’t speak for yourself? Would your family or doctors know your wishes?
An Advance Decision, also known as a Living Will, is a legally binding document that allows you to refuse specific medical treatments in the future if you lose the ability to communicate. It gives you control over choices such as life-sustaining treatment, resuscitation, or artificial feeding—decisions that can be incredibly difficult for families to make on your behalf.
This can be done alongside a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for Health and Welfare, which allows you to appoint someone you trust to make medical decisions on your behalf. While an LPA gives them the authority to decide, an Advance Decision ensures your specific
wishes about treatment are legally recorded. Together, they provide clarity and peace of mind for both you and your loved ones.
Anyone over 18 with mental capacity can create an Advance Decision. It must be clear, specific, and, if refusing life-sustaining treatment, signed and witnessed. Sharing it with loved ones and healthcare providers is crucial.
Planning ahead isn’t just for the elderly or unwell—it’s for everyone. Make your wishes known today.

protecting your assets during separation and divorce
When parties get divorced, they don’t always realise that all assets acquired during the marriage whether in their sole name or in joint names are classed as matrimonial funds, including their pensions. There are exceptions, for example, inheritance which a spouse can attempt to “ring fence” In addition to pensions which were acquired prior to the marriage. When parties contemplate divorce proceedings, they may consider moving their savings or transferring property in order to prevent their spouse obtaining a share. If you consider your spouse is likely to do this, it would be prudent to issue a divorce application rather than give your spouse the time to move assets. You can then make an application to the court for an Avoidance of Disposition Order or a Freezing Injunction which prevents your spouse from disposing funds.
If your spouse has already disposed of funds/property, the court can make an avoidance of disposition order. This allows the court to set aside a disposal. If the funds have already

been spent by the spouse, the court can order that the amount of funds disposed of be “added back” to the matrimonial pot and deducted from the disposing spouse’s share.
If you believe that your spouse intends to dispose of assets but has not yet done so, you can make an application to the court for a Freezing Injunction which is an order freezing the spouse’s assets until a financial settlement has been reached between the parties. mazda 2 hybrid exclusive-line
The Mazda 2 has received a mid-term makeover, nothing too adventurous or extravagant, bumpers, grille, the lights and rear tailgate but unless you are a purist you wouldn’t really notice it, writes Bob Hickman.
One of the biggest features however is the introduction of a hybrid version and for me this is the future. I am not an advocate of pure electric, but hybrids seem to tick all the necessary boxes.
The Mazda 2 is on sale with 4 grades, entry level is Centre-Line, my Exclusive is the second in the category, then there is the Homura and finally the top specification Homura Plus.
The vehicle had a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine producing about 116bhp, it also had the advantage of an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery to assist the engine and on a lot of occasions to take over completely and run-on EV.
Mazda claim a top speed of 0-60 in 9.7 seconds and a top speed of 109mph. When you combine the petrol and electric facility, they suggest 70 to the gallon could be achievable, but you always take these figures with a pinch of salt, certainly mid-50’s was what the computer suggested I had achieved during a week of very varied driving situations. CO emissions due to the electric assistance are very low at 92g/km.
The driving dynamics are of a very pleasant companion, it has a zippy engine and in and around town you can run on electric power. It holds the road really well with excellent steering and wonderful brakes, a comfortable all-round vehicle. The automatic gearbox made a smooth powerful delivery and it worked adequately and was not a problem.
If you do a lot of motorways driving you may notice a little bit of noise from under the bonnet, as the 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine does have a unique sound to it and perhaps a little more sound deadening insulation might have been a bonus feature.
From a driving perspective there was plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel so even a 6-footer like myself could get really comfortable. The rear seats, were adequately accommodating especially for children or 2 adults at a push, although knee room was a bit on the tight side and headroom again isn’t tremendous, this is primarily a city car and with the ability to do a few journeys and take the family away if you so wish. The
boot space is not overly generous but it was useable and adequate.
Unless you opt for the top specification model you have to contend with a 9” touch screen, more than adequate for your needs, only the top specification has a builtin satellite navigation. If you have Apple Play or an Android Auto it’s not a problem, however, be aware the Mazda 2 is equipped with the new mini-USB port so an adapter is necessary to connect the older USB if you still have that type of connecter.
The level of equipment on this Exclusive, being the second level of this vehicle was, quite extensive. It has the stop/start facility, daytime running lights, I like the feature of automatic high beam switch which switches off in the event of traffic coming the other way, reversing cameras are now an essential, electric parking brake and auto hold. The air conditioning worked wonderfully, there is a choice of driving modes between normal, power, and eco and most regular readers of mine know I just put it into eco and hope for the best.
There can be little doubt that the Mazda 2 should be on your shopping list, the Mazda 2 hybrid 116ps Exclusive-Line had an on the road price of £25,390.
volkswagen passat
Time certainly flies, it is difficult to accept that the Volkswagen Passat is now over 50 years old. The 9th generation is now available but strangely it is only available as an estate car, writes Bob Hickman. It is strange in this world of SUV’s everywhere to have a conventional size vehicle, albeit as an estate model. It is a huge vehicle, easily accommodating 5 adults with ease and more importantly accommodating all their luggage that the 5 adults would wish to carry.
My test vehicle was equipped with a very, very frugal and economical 1.5-litre petrol engine, producing about 150bhp. The wonderful DSG gearbox, from the VAG Group, was once again a well-honed friend and at all times it seemed to anticipate my moods and driving style and the conditions that we were driving in. A 0-60 claimed as just under 10 seconds and a top speed were legal of 138mph, are the figures for those who like to know about performance. The CO2 emissions of 129g/ km gives a reasonable performance.
As you would expect in this day and age, the Passat has grown somewhat from its very early incarnation. The current model is a very stylish aerodynamic vehicle and it is has grown over 5.5inches longer than its previous model, and this equates to an extra couple of extra inches of rear legroom. As previously mentioned, the boot which is quoted at 690 litres can increase by up to 1920 litres when you drop the seats.
From a driver’s perspective once again, the manufacturers have gone for the huge touchscreen but this time it was actually easy to understand, not at all complicated, but I still am not a lover of averting my eyes too far on to a screen when travelling at motorway speeds. In the defence of the Volkswagen Passat there was a plethora of buttons within the steering wheel and on the stalks of the steering wheel to operate all those commands that were necessity and necessary to utilise at all times. So, it is a compromise, one that I appreciated.
There are 3 trim levels of the Passat badged as Life, Elegance and R-line. My entry level was the Life model and had 17” alloy wheels, LED headlights, and as previously said, the huge infotainment system. Elegance had sound insulation, heated front seats, and a sunroof and the top spec R-Line had an extravagant exterior
design with 18” wheels, and various mode selections for drive and sport seats. However, the Life model really does tick all the buttons that I would need.
The Passat is a big car to drive, in and around town, manoeuvring wasn’t a problem the steering was light and responsive and with the addition of the reversing camera it was always easy to find that space that was a little bit larger than you would normally look for, but you don’t have to worry when you have a camera.
The system also had an automatic parking system and I have to concede I didn’t try this particular feature out.
One particular feature that was quite astonishing was the range of the vehicle, the fuel tank at 66 litres is quite on the large side, when it was delivered the onboard computer suggested a range of 700 miles could be possible. The quoted combined figure from Volkswagen is given at 51.8mpg and at the end of a week in company with the vehicle, having done a variety of mileage, but predominately in and around town, the computer suggested 47.8mpg had been achieved which for a vehicle of this size and carrying capacity, I think it is absolutely outstanding.
Volkswagen Passat offer a 3-year or 60,000 miles warranty, a 3-year paint and a 12-year body protection warranty and a 1-year Volkswagen Assistance is also included.
The basic on the road price for the Life is £37,400.
