As the summer months are approaching fast, outdoor living spaces are becoming more than just an extension of the home - they’re a true reflection of our lifestyle and design style.
In 2025, we’re looking to other cultures for cues on how to live graciously, which means we’re swapping our hot tubs for cold plunge pools and going all in by entertaining in outdoor kitchens.
It is so important that we value time with family and friends, living in our landscapes - dining alfresco, cooking together, strolling through meadows and watching butterflies collecting nectar. Nature provider, the magic that makes life better.
Whether you’re revamping your backyard or simply looking for inspiration, here are outdoor living trends that will define porches and patios everywhere this year. Get ready to elevate your outdoor space to a whole new level of easy living.
• Warm neutrals, terracotta, olive green, rust and sand tones.
• Inspired by desert landscapes and Mediterranean aesthetics.
• Matte finishes are in - especially for stone, ceramic and outdoor fabrics.
• Large glass doors, retractable walls, and covered patios that make outdoor spaces feel like extensions of the home.
• Outdoor kitchens, fire features and entertainment systems, bring the indoors out.
• Wicker, recycled wood, reclaimed stone and sustainable rattan or bamboo.
• Solar lighting, rainwater harvesting features and permeable paving.
STATEMENT PIECES
• Oversized planters, sculptural fire bowls, dramatic lighting.
• Curved shapes and tactile surfaceslike boucle or woven rope details.
OUTDOOR WELLNESS ZONES
• Think yoga decks, cold plunge tubs, saunas and meditation gardens.
• Soft lighting, natural scents (like lavender or eucalyptus) and privacy-enhancing landscaping.
MAXIMALIST PLANTING & WILD GARDENS
• Layered textural plantings, native plants and pollinator gardens.
• Wildflower meadows and edible landscaping (e.g., herb walls, citrus trees) are huge.
MODULAR & MULTI-FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE
• Pieces that adapt - like seating with storage or daybeds that turn into dining benches.
• Weatherproof performance fabrics that look like indoor upholstery.
TECH-INTEGRATED SPACES
• Smart irrigation, app-controlled lighting and built-in speakers.
• Discreet tech that doesn’t interrupt the nature vibe.

Think comfort colour and character!
In 2025 we are saying goodbye to boring outdoor fabrics and furnishing. We still want weather resistant fabrics but that doesn’t have to mean that they are not stylish. For upholstery, bold hues, tone-on-tone combinations and contrast piping create a polished custom appearance.
Particular popular looks are navy and white or earthy terracotta with beige. Also bold striking striped patterns inspired by the beach clubs of the Amalfi coast.
It’s all about creating a sense of escape in our own backyard and making your outdoor space feel like a sanctuary that anyone would want to jet set to.
Indoor and outdoor scallop edging is hot on the scene Playful yet elegant, wavy designs bring a sense of fun, movement and whimsy to outdoor spaces appearing on patio umbrellas, seat cushions and even planters and furniture. Scallop introduces a lovely touch of vintage charm, while feeling super fresh and contemporary.
Colours are in! Monochrome is out!
For years monochrome design has dominated outdoors, offering a sleek modern look. In 2025, designers are encouraging homeowners to look in favour of richer, earthier colours, texture and pattern!
So by choosing less black finishes and more earth tones, richer colours, this will keep your style less dated and more designer feel.
Try thinking outside the box for the best-decorated gardens and if you’re looking for unique furniture and accessories for you outdoor space, consider contacting Jennifer to elevate your garden style in 2025!

Were almost at the turn of the season once again and it’s an ideal time to make sure your beloved bunny is fit, healthy and ready to bounce in to Summer.
Flystrike can be a problem for rabbits in the warmer weather, many flies are harmless but some, such as the bluebottle will lay their eggs on poor bunnies’ fur. When the eggs hatch the maggots begin to eat the rabbit’s flesh and sadly this can cause shock and death in a very short amount of time.
Flies are particularly attracted to soiled or damp fir around bunny’s bottom. It is good practice to check your rabbit daily throughout the year anyway, but especially in the warmer weather to ensure that they are clean and healthy. Pay particular attention to their behind, keep this area well groomed, clean and dry which will help minimise the risk of Flystrike and ensure that any issues are dealt with immediately. Should you notice any problems, ensure that you contact your Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible.
Rabbits teeth continuously grow throughout their lifetime, so it is vital that your rabbit is given the correct diet to ensure good dental health. Hay and grass are very important for a rabbit and should account for at least 80% of their diet, fresh hay should be available to them at all times. Good quality hay from a variety of sources is essential, as well as keeping the teeth healthy it also helps prevent boredom, keeps the jaw strong and maintains a healthy gut.
Dandelion have a lot of health benefits as they are high in fiber, antioxidants and a good source of minerals as well as vitamins. Rabbits absolutely love Dandelions and they can eat the leaves as well as the flower, these along with twigs can be mixed into the rabbit’s hay and be hidden to make his or her life more interesting. In the wild rabbits would forage for a large percentage of their time. Something for bunny to safely chew on would also be a good source of amusement as well as playing a valuable role in helping to keep their teeth growth under control.
Take care with Rabbit Mixes as they can cause bunny to feed selectively, picking out their favourite bits and not eating others that contain vital nutrients. Pellets on the other hand are full of fibre and have an even spread of nutrients to prevent selective feeding. Don’t let bunny fill up on too many pellets though, they need to eat enough hay to help keep their teeth healthy.
It’s a good idea to get an annual check-up with the Vet to ensure that your bunny stays in ‘tip hop’ I mean, tip top condition and keeps bouncing all year long!!!
Important always check that your garden plants are non-toxic for rabbits and that vegetables and herbs given to them are clean and not sprayed with chemicals. Do not feed your rabbit lawn mower grass cuttings. If you are ever concerned about your pet always consult your veterinarian.

The word wheel is made from a 9-letter word. The challenge is to find the 9-letter word and then create as many other words as possible using its letters. The rules are simple: each letter can only be used once per word, and every word must include the letter in the centre of the wheel.

6
METHOD:
1. MARINATE THE CHICKEN
Soak the dried pepper in hot water until soft. Finely chop the garlic cloves then mix with the paprika, cumin, lime juice, olive oil and sea salt. Take the stem and seeds out of the pepper, remove any skin then mash the flesh with the spiced chopped garlic paste. Butterfly the chicken breasts and cover with the chipotle mash. Leave for 6 hours. Cook on the grill for 5-6 minutes on both sides then set aside to rest under foil while you get on with the other jobs.
2. GRILLED FLAT BREAD
Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl until a dough forms. Knead for a few minutes then separate into 6 balls. Roll into thin rounds like flour tortillas (or buy flour tortillas to skip this step). Grill the breads just before you’re ready to eat so they are fresh and toasty. Double the quantity if you like a lot of bread.
3. ROASTED CORN RIBS
Quarter the corn cobs length ways with a large cooks knife. Be careful doing this. Melt the butter with the fennel seeds, salt and pepper. Toss the ribs in the melted butter and place on a roasting tray. Roast for 20 minutes at 200˚C turn over after 10 minutes or grill on the BBQ.
4. CUCUMBER SALAD
To make cucumber ribbons simply peel the cucumber all the way through with a potato peeler or mandolin, toss with the sugar, vinegar, mint leaves and coriander. Slice the red onion as thinly as you can with a knife or carefully on the mandolin. Toss into the cucumber mix and serve.
SERVE
Mix the zest of one lime with chopped coriander leaves into the crème fraiche and stir. Put everything together on a large platter with wedges of lime and pickled chillies and serve in the middle of the table for everyone to get stuck in.

A Shropshire independent school has enjoyed a hugely successful spring term with various sporting and musical achievements combined with fundraising, innovative classroom projects and external trips keeping every pupil active and engaged throughout.
Old Hall School in Wellington, soon to be renamed Wrekin Prep, has seen several sporting successes including the U11 boys’ and U9 girls’ football teams being crowned Telford winners and the U11 girls’ football team making its way to the Telford finals. The U11 boys are county hockey champions for their age group, qualifying for the regional finals. The U11 mixed tag rugby team were also Telford winners, and the U9 girls’ netball team have been unbeaten all season.
Individual pupils have also enjoyed county success in a range of sports including swimming, cross country and cricket.
Meanwhile the school has staged an end of term concert featuring no less than five ensemble groups including woodwind, strings, brass, a rock band and orchestra.
Miss Jade Harris, Director of Music, said they were very proud of the children adding that lunchtime rehearsals had produced fantastic and ambitious pieces performed to an audience of parents and other pupils.
“Being part of a group like this is really enjoyable but it also teaches vital lifeskills including collaboration, leadership and resilience,” she added.
The Chapel Choir (one of four choirs at Old Hall) and solo musicians wowed audiences at a lunchtime concert at St Chad’s Church in Shrewsbury as part of a series which featured popular professional musicians.
The Chapel Choir will also be taking to the stage again
next month with Wrekin College at an ambitious VE Day Concert. The newly formed Lower School Choir recently performed at a class assembly and the Concert Choir made their debut at a Performing Arts showcase for Year 3 and 4 children.
All pupils have also been involved in dedicated art, science and Shakespeare weeks including visiting speakers, workshops, competitions and the opportunity to dress up in keeping with a theme.
“Our pupils never cease to amaze me when it comes to not only what they are capable of but their endless enthusiasm for trying something new, engaging with opportunities to get involved and in encouraging others too,” said Headteacher Mrs Anna Karacan.
Mrs Karacan said the pupils were also looking forward to a packed summer term starting with residential trips in May with all children from Year 3 to Year 6 taking part. A number of adventure day trips have been planned for all the Lower School pupils and the Easter holidays saw a ski trip for Year 5 and 6 pupils.
“It is so valuable for children to be given as many opportunities as possible. We really do try and ensure there is something to help every child reach their full potential.”

At Newbridge Preparatory School, we believe in the power of individualised education to nurture and inspire children to achieve excellence. Our role as a preparatory school extends far beyond simply preparing pupils for the 11+ exams; we focus on equipping them with the skills, confidence, and love of learning that will serve them throughout their lives.
One of the cornerstones of our approach is our small class sizes. This allows us to create an environment where every child is known, valued, and supported. Small classes mean our dedicated teachers can tailor the curriculum to suit each child’s unique strengths, interests, and areas for development. This personalised approach allows every pupil to thrive, building confidence and inspiring a genuine love for learning.
At Newbridge, we define excellence as striving to be the best version of ourselves, rather than competing against others. Success can often be seen as a comparison, but excellence is a personal journey. Our aim is to help every child discover their potential and reach it - whether that is mastering a new skill, excelling in academics, or finding joy and achievement in sports, music, drama, or art.
Our holistic curriculum reflects this philosophy. We offer a wealth of opportunities for children to explore and grow, from specialist subject teaching to outdoor learning in our expansive grounds. Whether it is investigating nature, creating art, performing on stage, or taking part in team sports, our pupils are encouraged to embrace a wide range of experiences. This breadth of choice allows every child to shine in their own way, developing both skills and passions.
At Newbridge, we understand that childhood is a precious, fleeting time. Our mission is to make those years as rich, fulfilling, and joyous as possible. By nurturing every child’s individual potential within our supportive, close-knit community, we prepare them not only for the next stage of their education but for a lifetime of excellence.
Children only have one childhood. Choose the best childhood—a Newbridge childhood.

Cheshire’s elite came out in full force to celebrate the 50th birthday of Sule Cooper, the wife of the founder of travel retailer On The Beach. The event was held at her breathtaking Alderley Edge home, where Nick and Royston joined 150 of the region’s finest guests to mark the milestone in style. The luxurious venue, complete with an indoor bowling alley, set the stage for a night to remember.
The party was held in a private underground nightclub, where champagne and canapés greeted guests upon arrival. With cocktails flowing freely and DJs spinning tunes all night, the dance floor was packed. A night of fun, laughter and dancing made it a birthday celebration to cherish!
Supporting local charities have always been close to Nick & Royston’s heart. So, when asked to support an event in aid of raising awareness for Medullary Thyroid cancer and fundraising for Heather Johnson, they were more than happy to help.
Held at The Mount Hotel, the guests were served afternoon tea and champagne. Nick & Royston enjoyed a catch-up with friends with Royston helping to kick off the auction. The day was a roaring success raising over £4000, with loads of fun, laughter and all in a great cause.
Wishing the very best for Heather on her journey.
With the return of ITVBE `The Real Housewives of Cheshire`, Nick & Royston are busy filming the latest series with all the gang. After a full day of recording with co- star Lauren Stone, a night out was called for with friend Donna Johnson.
A favourite restaurant of Nick & Royston’s is Cibo in Hale with its renowned roof terrace, where eating under the stars makes it the talk of the town. A celebrity hotspot, it is always busy with a great vibe, offering the finest Italian cuisine. After enjoying the delightful food, the evening continued back to the bars of Alderley Edge and then on to a nightclub in Wilmslow. There’s no slowing down for these socialites - just another night out with plenty of energy and style!
Nick and Royston were invited to attend the prestigious Aldridge-Brownhills Annual Dinner at Aston Wood Golf Club for a black-tie event that combined delicious dining with an auction to support charitable efforts. The evening featured distinguished guest speakers, including The Rt Hon Robert Jenrick and Hon Wendy Moreton MP, who entertained guests with insights into the world of politics.
Always eager to expand their social circle, Nick and Royston had a wonderful time meeting new people and enjoying an elegant night out. The evening proved to be both entertaining and meaningful, making it an unforgettable experience.

The Republic of Namibia, in the south of the African continent, borders the South Atlantic Ocean, Angola, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa. A German colony during WWII, the country was occupied by South Africa and administered as a mandate until the end of the war when the territory was annexed.
The war of independence began in 1966 and in 1988 South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with the United Nations peace plan leading to independence in 1990. With a rich history and an intriguing culture Namibia, the most sparsely populated country in the world, offers a unique experience for explorers.
Namibia was the first country in the world to incorporate the protection of the environment into its constitution with 14% of the land protected, including virtually the entire Namib Desert coastal strip. The Namib Desert, the oldest in the world, stretches along the western coast, while the Kalahari runs along the south-eastern border with Botswana. I was keen to embark on an exciting adventure and I was simply enchanted by the outstanding beauty of this wonderful country.
My first stop was Windhoek, the capital, and it is a charming, cosmopolitan city with excellent accommodation options. I chose to stay at the enchanting Heinitzburg Hotel, which was commissioned in 1914 by
Count von Schwerin as a home for his fiancé Margarethe von Heinitzburg. The hotel, a stone castle, sits high on a hill with breath taking views across Windhoek. Many of the rooms are wood-panelled and tastefully decorated with works of art by popular Namibian artists. As one would expect in luxurious surroundings, the service is excellent and the cuisine, which is served in the main dining room, is superb.
After a deep slumber and a hearty breakfast I was eager to start my journey into the heart of the country. As my schedule was tight the best way to travel long distance is by private charter and my next stop was Sossusvlei, an ephemeral pan in the centre of the Namib Desert. I was overwhelmed with the mesmerising sight of the world’s tallest dunes towering over 1000 feet above the surrounding plains. It is a truly humbling experience to observe Mother Nature at her very best and I took the opportunity to scan the horizon searching for springbok, gemsbok, cape fox, polecats and aardwolf, all surviving in these harsh conditions. The unique fauna and flora against the panorama of colours is a simply magnificent sight and I was utterly captivated.
The 7,000 hectare private Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp provided me with the highest degree of comfort after the dusty desert safari. The camp, built using natural materials, offers privacy and exclusivity and each room has its own private plunge pool, bliss! Also, this site offers the ultimate romantic al fresco dining experience under the brilliance of twinkling African stars.
A short flight from Sossusvlei to Swakopmund and then a quick transfer by road to Walvis Bay Lagoon and I embarked on a boat cruise, which was the perfect spot to unwind, taking in the magnificent scenery and a spot of bird watching. I was fortunate to see a pod of playful dolphins frolicking in the sea and with the salty air in my nostrils I reluctantly disembarked. I was then whisked away to the Hansa Hotel, which is the ideal location to investigate the desert. This property offers a taste of old world charm with spacious and comfortable accommodation and excellent service. The site is situated four hundred yards from the beach and I was easily persuaded to take a late afternoon dip.
The following morning I opted to transfer by air to the privately owned Ongava Game Reserve, which covers 30,000 hectares and is on the southern border of the Etosha National Park. This game reserve is a premier wildlife park providing the ultimate African experience with great concentrations of game and spectacular views of the salt pans, which dominate the centre of the park. I stayed at the Ongava Lodge and on arrival I was warmly welcomed and escorted to my rock and thatch en-suite chalet, which was the ideal spot to relax and recuperate.
The camp’s waterhole is viewed from the main lounge and dining areas and the anticipation of seeing African wildlife so close by is thrilling. Ongava has both white and black rhino residing on-site and I was most fortunate to see both.
Nature walks and night drives are permitted in this area and I highly recommend this experience. This is indeed an explorer’s paradise.
One last air transfer and I arrived at Okonjima in the Omboroko Mountains, part of the Namibian Waterberg
Plateau and situated 225km from Windhoek. A visit to the Africat Foundation is a must and provides an unforgettable opportunity to learn a great deal about lion, cheetah, leopard and puma.
Back in Windhoek and prior to my departure I was fortunate to have some time to visit one of the exclusive purveyors of diamonds. Namibia produces 8% of the world’s diamonds and a tax refund applies on departure. Alas, my budget was depleted but I intend to return to explore more to this wonderful country and perhaps splurge on something that glitters to remind me of Namibia’s carpet of stars.
Visit Namibia for an adventure of a lifetime.

Recently honoured with a Royal warrant, Deborah Mitchell’s Heaven Skincare offers a range of transformational treatments at its award-winning flagship salon in Shifnal.
Offering a raft of amazing treatments for the face and body, what really differentiates, is the range of results-driven therapies, and incredible pamper spa days, that start from as little as £25. Where else could you come along in a couple, or with friends, and spend the whole day in beautiful surroundings, enjoy a complementary lunch, whilst being pampered with award-winning, age-defying treatments.
A Celebrity Favourite and an ‘Incredible Treat for the skin’!
The famous BEE STING facial, not only makes your skin feel amazing and generates an overall sense of a healthy wellbeing, but it actually makes you look visibly younger. Just check out the feedback from celebrities like the Minogue sisters, and Strictly’s Arlene Phillips.
‘I can honestly say I’ve never experienced anything so amazing, I could not believe the radiance and glow. I looked instantly younger. It’s an incredible treat for the skin’
Heaven’s Nettle Sting facial is an amazing rejuvenating skin treatment, that leaves you feeling younger and more radiant. Then there is the Collagen facial, which resurfaces the skin, and involves taking an internal supplement, together with collagen based products, to achieve incredible results.
‘A natural look’ not artificial.
Deborah Mitchell is entrepreneurial, believing passionately in a completely natural and holistic approach to beauty.
This is why she introduced her range of aesthetics treatments into the mix, launching her internationally renowned training academy, which
mentors therapists, to understand and administer more invasive procedures, in a completely holistic way. Her mantra is clear, to retain that all-important ‘natural look’. This belief actually enabled Heaven’s trademark ‘Synergy Facelift’.
This treatment simply tweaks, turning back the years, with gentle lifts here and there, achieved by a combination of fillers and botox, to reveal better cheekbone definition, and fewer lines in those tell tale areas. This is the facelift, whereby everyone is amazed by how you look, but nobody suspects. They just see you looking fabulous, and can’t quite tap into the secret!
Another is the ‘Baby B anti-wrinkle treatment’, which deals effectively with those problem areas, such as the neck, mouth and eyes. Here, small amounts of product are deposited, to smooth fine lines and ageing, transforming your ‘look’. It is a safe, low-risk, affordable, and effective alternative to surgery.
The range of body treatments are extensive, and include fat busting therapies, that go hand in hand with hydrating and smoothing treatments, that refine the contours of our body, and increase the suppleness of our skin. It is a complete synchronicity of our wellbeing and glow.
First up, the incredible ‘Lymph Drainage Body Massage’, which creates real change from within, and allows you to lose pounds. Results are clearly visible immediately, however a minimum of 3 is recommended, for longer lasting results. This is a great massage to do whilst dieting, because it smooths and firms.
Then we have the ‘Salt Glow Spa’, which exfoliates and hydrates, to release damaging toxins, and purify the skin from the inside out, through precise massaging techniques, which puts the body into an osmosis, in order to revitalise and replenish.
Try to tan and slim simultaneously…
….with Shifnal welcoming its first ‘Collagen Sun Bed’. This gives you a tan without any ageing side effects, and actually makes you look visibly younger. Rich in collagen and vitamin D, whereas conventional sun beds
Offering natural filler to vegan facials and everything in-between with Heaven’s unique techniques, treatments and products.
often irritate pigmentation, this delivers a seamless colour. Moreover, you can tan or not, and it is completely safe for the skin, with infrared power, to give a slimming effect to the body. The treatment is also UVB not UVA. Try ‘a tan and slim treatment,’ which includes full body massage, slimming treatment, and collagen sun bed, from as little as £50 a session!
Heaven also offers fantastic ‘fat dissolving treatments’. So why not try another Heaven trademark, the ‘Lipolis 7’, which identifies cellulite, then lifts/smooths problem areas, to eliminate fatty cells, by breaking them down, never to return. After just one treatment, the results are staggering (minimum 3 recommended). Fat dissolving delivers quick, long lasting results.
So Heaven is always changing, and improving, to bring us the very best. Staff will help navigate your skincare journey, with the most transformational treatments, that are specifically right for you.
Organic and sustainable vegan skincare is also available.
AS WE GLIDE DEEPER INTO SPRING, AND PREPARE FOR THE SUMMER, WHY NOT TRY A COMPLIMENTARY 10-MINUTE COLLAGEN SUN BED TO BOOST YOUR SKIN

Hearing loss can affect anyone, at any age, and for a multitude of reasons. At Hear In Hagley and Wombourne, we believe that understanding the causes of hearing loss is the first step towards effective management and prevention. While some causes are unavoidable, many can be mitigated with proper care and awareness.
Age-Related Hearing Loss (Presbycusis)
This is the most common cause of hearing loss, affecting millions worldwide. As we age, the delicate structures within our inner ear naturally deteriorate, leading to a gradual decline in hearing sensitivity. Typically, highfrequency sounds are the first to be affected.
Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
Exposure to loud noises, whether from machinery, concerts, or even everyday activities like using power tools, can damage the hair cells in the inner ear. This type of hearing loss is often preventable by wearing appropriate hearing protection.
Earwax Buildup
While earwax is a natural protective substance, excessive buildup can block the ear canal and impair hearing. Avoid using cotton swabs or other objects to remove earwax, as this can push it further in. Our clinics offer safe and effective wax removal services.
Ear Infections
Infections of the middle ear can cause temporary hearing loss and, if left untreated, may lead to permanent damage. Children are particularly susceptible to ear infections.
Ototoxic Medications
Certain medications, including some antibiotics,
chemotherapy drugs, and aspirin, can damage the inner ear and cause hearing loss. It’s crucial to discuss potential side effects with your doctor.
Genetics and Heredity
In some cases, hearing loss is inherited. Genetic factors can contribute to various types of hearing loss, including congenital hearing loss (present at birth).
The Importance of Professional Audiology Assessment
If you’re experiencing hearing difficulties, it’s essential to seek professional help. At Hear In Hagley and Wombourne, our experienced audiologists can conduct a comprehensive hearing assessment to determine the cause and extent of your hearing loss. We’ll then work with you to develop a treatment plan, which may include hearing aids, assistive listening devices, or other interventions.
Understanding the causes of hearing loss empowers you to take proactive steps to protect your hearing. Whether it’s wearing ear protection in noisy environments, managing underlying medical conditions, or simply being aware of the potential side effects of medications, you can play a significant role in preserving your hearing health. Don’t hesitate to contact us at Hear In Hagley and Wombourne for expert advice and support.

When someone passes away, what they leave behind isn’t just a house full of memories and old recipe books. Sometimes, they leave something quieter — a letter, not written on paper, but folded into the lines of a clearly drafted will. Every item, every decision, carries a quiet message: I thought of you. I wanted this to be easier.
Too often, we see wills as cold legal documents — sterile, transactional, best left to lawyers. But in truth, a will is one of the most personal things you’ll ever create. It’s your voice, carried into a room you’ll never enter — a room filled with the people you love most, facing one of the hardest days of their lives.
And yet, so many people never write one. Out of fear. Out of superstition. Out of the belief that death is distant,
or that their lives aren’t “complicated enough” to need a plan. But here’s the truth: writing a will isn’t about expecting the end. It’s about protecting what matters — and offering peace when you’re no longer here to give it in person.

1. Over half of the adult population does not have a will. Without a will there is a bigger chance of disputes arising when a loved one dies
2. A will is not the same as a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). A will is used when a person dies, an LPA is used to help a person during their lifetime.
3. Animals can’t be beneficiaries! You can leave gifts to animal charities of course.
4. You can use your will to appoint guardians for children under 18 should both parents die.
5. If you divorce or remarry you should change your will
6. If you die without a will, your spouse is not entitled to the whole of your estate and if you are not married or in a civil partnership, your loved one may not be entitled to anything.
7. If you do not make a will and you have no surviving relatives, your estate passes to the Crown.
8. If you have debts when you die, your estate will have to pay them, they don’t disappear upon your death. If you haven’t got a will, consider these facts and then why not contact the team at Thornes.
In the October 2024 UK Budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves introduced significant reforms to the taxation of pensions, notably bringing unused pension funds and death benefits within the scope of Inheritance Tax (IHT) from April 2027. This policy shift has profound implications for all of us thinking about the passing of wealth to the next generation. This underscores the renewed importance of IHT planning and has prompted many to start thinking about strategies to mitigate potential tax liabilities.
Historically, pensions have been an effective vehicle for generational wealth transfer, as unused pension funds could be passed on to beneficiaries free from IHT. However, the forthcoming changes mean that from April 2027, most unused pension funds and death benefits will be included in the deceased’s estate for IHT purposes. Consequently, these assets could be subject to a 40% tax rate, significantly impacting the amount passed on the next generation.
The government’s rationale for this reform is to ensure that pensions serve their primary purpose—providing income during retirement—rather than being utilised as a means of wealth transfer. By subjecting unused pension funds to IHT, the government aims to discourage the use of pensions as a tax-planning tool for inheritance purposes.
The inclusion of pension funds in the IHT net necessitates a comprehensive review of existing estate plans.
Individuals who have relied on pensions as a taxefficient method of passing wealth to the next generation should reassess their strategies to avoid unforeseen tax liabilities.
We have seen an increase in clients seeking advice about their retirement and estate plans in response to the forthcoming changes.
In light of these changes, several strategies could be considered to minimize the impact of IHT on pension assets:
Use Your Pension Funds During Retirement: With the impending IHT charges on unused pension funds, retirees may consider drawing down their pensions more aggressively to fund their retirement needs and reduce the amount subject to IHT upon death. This approach aligns with the pension’s intended purpose and can help in managing the taxable estate size.
Gifting Assets: Individuals might contemplate gifting assets during their lifetime to reduce the value of their estate. Gifts made more than seven years before death are generally exempt from IHT. However, it’s crucial to consider the potential impact on one’s financial security and ensure that such gifts are made within the individual’s means.
Spousal Transfers: Transfers between spouses or civil partners are typically exempt from IHT. Therefore, ensuring that pension benefits are structured to pass to a
surviving spouse can defer IHT liabilities until the second death. This strategy provides more time for planning and potentially utilising other exemptions or reliefs.
Charitable Donations: Leaving a portion of the estate to charity can reduce the overall IHT rate. If at least 10% of the net estate is left to charity, the IHT rate on the remaining estate can reduce from 40% to 36%.
This not only benefits charitable causes but also serves as a tax-efficient estate planning tool.
Life Insurance Policies: Taking out a life insurance policy written in trust can provide funds to cover the IHT liability, ensuring that heirs receive the intended inheritance without the need to liquidate assets to pay the tax. It’s essential to structure the policy correctly to ensure that the proceeds are outside the estate for IHT purposes.
Reviewing and Updating Wills: Regularly reviewing and updating wills to reflect current wishes and take advantage of available exemptions and reliefs is vital. Properly structured wills can ensure that assets are distributed in a tax-efficient manner, potentially reducing the IHT burden.
Given the complexity of the new rules and the significant impact they can have on estate planning, seeking professional financial and legal advice is important.
The changes announced in the October 2024 UK Budget represent a significant shift in the treatment of pensions concerning Inheritance Tax. While the reforms aim to realign pensions with their original purpose of funding retirement, they also necessitate a thorough reassessment of estate planning strategies. By proactively addressing these changes and exploring various mitigation options, individuals can ensure that their wealth is transferred according to their wishes, with minimised tax implications.

The Nissan X-Trail has been on sale for over 25 years, and the latest generation from the mighty Nissan stable is a very practical and spectacular looking vehicle with a huge amount of technological equipment contained within its build, writes Bob Hickman.
As you would expect from the latest version, it is bigger than its predecessor and this adds to the interior space for all of its occupants. Bring in to this equation a hybrid and 4-wheel drive system that is operated by a motor to each wheel, and Nissan have really moved the technological goal post with the new X-Trail.
The hybrid system is complicated, suffice to say it does work quite well. The driving dynamics of the X-Trail were of a very pleasant companion. The driver has the ability to electronically select his seating position and when you come back to the vehicle press the start button, the seats automatically re-adjust itself to the position you had previously chosen. The automatic transmission was a pure delight, you dial in via a switch on the transmission tunnel the mode you wish. There is a choice between Sport, Snow with 4-wheel drive, Economy, or a standard setting.
The vehicle is equipped with a 1477cc 3-cylinder engine, this produced 142 CO2g/km of the naughty gases. Nissan suggests the combined figure of 44mpg might be possible but during a week of much varied driving I only manged to achieve, according to the computer 38mpg.
The X Trail is claimed to be able to do 0-60 in just over 7.2 seconds and has top speed of 111mph.
The level of creature comforts, safety and security is quite outstanding, I like the factor you just touch the door handle and the vehicle will open and you don’t have to fumble for your keys. It also had a plethora of intelligent driver features, anti-collision, lane departure warning, a device to indicate when you are exceeding the speed limit. I love the cameras both front and rear. This is a big vehicle and at all times I felt comfortable and secure using the facilities to park the vehicle. The manufacturer has realised that not everyone has Type C USB and it was equipped with the brand-new Type C and the more conventional one that we are more used to, the bigger one, so you could actually plug in and utilise Apple Play or Android Auto if you so wish.
The interior was a further delight, the leather steering wheel, on my derivative was heated, the dual air
conditioning at the front, allowed different settings for the driver and front seat passenger. An excellent feature for rear seat passengers was that the rear seats had electric heating elements built in, also those same rear seat passengers had their own heating controls. Head and shoulder room was more than adequate and I would have easily been persuaded to a long journey sitting in the rear of the X-Trail. A bonus is dropping the rear seats, slide them forward and 2 more seats, in what would normally be the luggage boot area, are able to be utilised, making the X-Trail a full 7-seater, albeit the last 2 seats are only really suitable for smaller stature people or children. In addition, the rear seat backs recline making for even more comfort for rear passengers.
With the X Trail you are not buying a hot hatch, so you wouldn’t expect it to be grippy B road plaything, however the balance and poise was just right, the suspension and brakes were more than able to allow for relaxing drives on either Motorway, B and A roads or in and around the Town.
Prices for X Trails vary between £35,175 and £44,480. My particular version had an on the road price of £49,525.
All Nissans have a three-year 60,000 mileage warranty package.
The Kia Sorento has been around for quite some time, it is a large SUV with the capacity to accommodate 7 people and this is one of the big selling points of this particular vehicle, writes Bob Hickman.
The space within the vehicle really is incredible, a 7-seater as standard and there is ample room in all 3 rows of seats for adults. The very rear seats are tight but then again you are making a vehicle that will carry 7 people with a degree of luggage but not a huge amount.
The Sorento is available with 3 different equipment levels and they are badged as 2, 3, and 4. My particular 1.6 turbo charged 6-speed automatic was the entry level Number 2 and this had more than sufficient equipment for my needs and my requirements. There is a choice of a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a diesel powertrain. CO emissions can be as low as 37g/km and all of the engines meet the latest Euro 6 emission standards.
The interior is comfortable and practical. The front seats were heated and so was the steering wheel.
To drive the Sorento is pretty much where you think you will be, it is a large, heavy SUV so therefore it is never going to be nimble on country roads but it is a stable companion on the motorway. It is really on its own on long distance, or motorway journeys.
The Sorento was equipped with Apple and Android play, keyless entry, a wonderful reversing camera and even the 17” alloy wheels don’t look too bad. In and around the city it was quite easy to drive, very light and at times I felt perhaps over assisted power steering, the visibility all round is quite good and of course being that little bit higher makes visibility even better for manoeuvring.
As previously mentioned, the vehicle is a 7-seater, The third very back row, in what would normally be the luggage area is okay, they fold and slide out of the way. Whilst cocooned in the rear seats, 6 and 7, there was quite a bit of space, the main issue is that the floor is quite high so you will be sitting with your knees somewhat propped up not comfortable for big trips, but certainly okay for in and around and short journeys. It goes without saying, boot space when the rear seats are in place is somewhat limited. Fold them down and you get a very roomy amount of space, drop all the rear seats and you have almost a van-like proportion, with nearly 2,000 litres of space.
Driver information is contained within the 12.3-inch infotainment screen, my 2-model also had regular
instruments in another display. I did like the factor that certain aspects of the vehicle are controlled from the steering wheel and you do not have to avert your eyes to a big screen to even operate simple things like the heating system.
In the current situation that we live in there is a plethora of safety equipment fitted. Forward Collision avoidance, Intelligent speed, Lane follow. One of the features which is now common place if you go even a mere one or two miles per hour over the speed limit a bell will ring, this is a European controlled feature that we can do nothing about.
The vehicle had a 1598cc petrol engine, producing 212bhp. Kia suggest a top speed of 113mph and a 0-62 in 9.7 seconds. The fuel consumption was quoted on the combined mpg at 42.2mpg. During my week on quite a large amount of mileage and a mixture of lanes, towns and motorway, I actually achieved 46mpg which considering the size and the capacity of the vehicle, was exceptionally good.
Kia have continued with their excellent 7-year, 100,000 miles warranty with a 12 months Roadside Package incorporated as well.
The vehicle as tested had an on the road price of £42,995.
