Whether you’re living in your forever home or settling into a new space, staying current with your interiors is a constant dance between what’s timeless and what’s trending. As we step into 2025, it’s clear some design choices that once felt fresh and modern, now anchor our homes in the past—not in a charming, nostalgic way, but in a “please renovate me” sort of way.

The truth is, interior trends evolve—and some faster than others. While enduring design principles always have a place, certain out-dated elements are making even the most well loved spaces feel a little tired. If your home is clinging to any of these designs “icks”, it may be time for a refresh! Please be sitting down whilst reading, as you may be guilty!

1. THE ERA OF GREY IS OVER

Grey had a moment—an entire decade, in fact. But the reign of Millennial Grey is now firmly in the rear view mirror. Originally adopted as a clean, modern alternative to beige, this cool tone has saturated everything from walls to floors; leaving interiors feeling flat, cold and a little too reminiscent of early 2010s builder-grade finishes.

Cool-toned greys are out. They lack the warmth and personality that today’s interiors crave.

Instead, we’re heading into the rise of colour drenching, bold and vibrant colours and cosy, character-rich palettes—think warm woods, earthy browns and creamy neutrals that create depth and invite you in.

2. SAY GOODBYE TO MATCHY-MATCHY FURNITURE

Remember when matching furniture sets were the pinnacle of put-together? In 2025, that uniform look reads more catalogues than curated. Identical pieces from big-box stores often strip a space of its soul, replacing personality with predictability.

Matching sets feel uninspired. A thoughtfully mixed collection—layering different textures, finishes, and styles—makes a home feel collected, not copied.

The modern aesthetic is layered, personal and often includes vintage, custom or artisan-made pieces that speak to the individuality of those who live there.

Homes that feel overly staged or try too hard to follow every trend feel flat. Design today is about the storytelling of the owner, not styling.

3. PLAIN COUNTERTOPS PASS

For years, neutral countertops—solid white quartz, speckled granite and basic laminate—were the go-to for a “timeless” kitchen. But in 2025, these safe surfaces are being left behind in favour of bolder, more expressive materials.

Cold sterile countertops are out. Instead, we’re embracing natural stone and quartz with movement—veining, texture and variation that make a statement. Think dramatic marble, honed limestone or richly patterned quartzite. These materials bring life to a kitchen, elevating it from functional to fabulous. After all, your countertops are one of the largest visual investments in your kitchen—why settle for something forgettable?

Design isn’t about chasing every trend—it’s about creating spaces that reflect who you are now, while still honouring what makes a home timeless.

4. “LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE” – AND OTHER DECORATIVE DIRECTIVES WE’RE LEAVING BEHIND

One cardinal rule of elevated interior design? Never let your walls tell you how to feel.

While the infamous “Live, Laugh, Love” vinyl decal has become something of a punch line in design circles, the sentiment behind it lingers—migrating from cursive wall stickers to framed prints that command everything from “Bon Appétit” in the kitchen to “Ciao Bella” in the hallway.

Yes, we see the appeal—these phrases are well intentioned, playful and seemingly harmless. But in 2025, this style of decorative signage feels more generic than joyful. It lacks the nuance and individuality that today’s interiors demand. Your home isn’t a coffee shop or an Airbnb—and it shouldn’t be styled like one. Instead of leaning on mass-produced affirmations, designers are steering clients toward original artwork, family heirlooms or pieces that evoke feeling without spelling it out.

If you want your space to express warmth, personality or humour, let your materials, colours and textures do the talking. Handcrafted ceramics, layered textiles, vintage finds or even a well-curated gallery wall will tell your story far more beautifully than a scripted command to “gather”. Bottom line? If your walls are shouting at your guests, it might be time to ask them to quiet down!

5. BOUCLÉ OVERLOAD – TIME TO GIVE THIS TREND A BREATHER

There’s no denying bouclé had a moment. Soft, textural and impossibly cosy, it quickly became the choice of furniture fabric seen on Instagram feeds everywhere.

From curved sofas to accent chairs and ottomans, the nubby fabric found its way into just about every modern living space. But like all trends that go from fresh to formulaic, bouclé has officially hit saturation point.

What once felt tactile and luxurious is now starting to feel… predictable. Bouclé was beautiful in moderation, but when every piece in a room is wrapped in the same fuzzy texture, it flattens the overall design. There’s no contrast, no story.

As we move into 2025, interiors are gravitating toward richer, more varied textures—and none are making a bigger impact than jewel-toned velvets. Emerald, sapphire, amethyst and ruby hues in plush velvet fabrics are stealing the spotlight. Not only do they lend a sophisticated, high-design edge, but they also elevate vintage silhouettes and create a sense of layered opulence. While bouclé still has its place (a single occasional chair, a cosy throw), designers are now advocating for balance and diversity in materials.

Texture is crucial—but it needs variation to shine. It’s time to let bouclé rest and give your interiors a tactile richness they truly deserve. Pairing natural linen, leather, velvet and wood creates a far more engaging and enduring space.

NEW SUMMER FABRIC COLLECTIONS OUT NOW - BEAUMONT TEXTILES, PRESTIGIOUS, CHATHAM GLYN, BELLFIELD HOME

6. ALL-WHITE WALLS – A BLANK CANVAS THAT’S LOST ITS CHARM

Once the hallmark of minimalist, gallery-style interiors, all-white walls are quietly exiting the design scene in 2025—and not a moment too soon. While white offered a clean, airy backdrop for years, today’s homes are craving more warmth, more soul and a whole lot more personality.

White walls can feel sterile and forgettable; I’ve always gravitated toward colour and texture—elements that bring individuality and depth to a space. A completely white room can often feel unfinished, like a canvas waiting for a story.

2025 interiors are pattern-rich wallpapers, moody paint tones and layered finishes that create intimacy and character. Wallpaper, once considered out-dated, is having a renaissance—think botanical prints, textured grass cloth, hand-painted murals or bold geometrics that instantly elevate a room. Whether you use it to define a dining nook, add drama to a powder room or bring life to a dull hallway, wallpaper offers a level of artistry that plain white simply can’t compete with.

Walls are no longer just backdrops—they’re becoming focal points. It’s time to trade in blank white expanses for walls that speak, inspire and express who you are. But hold fire, don’t just order a wallpaper online, contact Jennifer to open your eyes to a world of luxury quality wallpapers and think of pairing the woodwork and ceilings to all work in harmony.

DESIGNING FORWARD: THE END OF OUT-DATED TRENDS

As we leave behind these once popular but now-tired trends, one thing is clear - interior design in 2025 is all about intentionality. The days of fast décor, overly coordinated sets and design-by-algorithms are behind us. In their place, we’re embracing homes that reflect personality, warmth and depth—spaces that feel not just styled, but lived in and loved.

Whether it’s swapping sterile grey for earthy warmth, replacing word art with meaningful pieces or trading bouclé overload for sumptuous velvets, the common thread is character. Design today isn’t about following every trend—it’s about curating a home that tells your story, layered with thoughtful textures, colours and pieces collected over time. So if your home still leans on a few of these outdated choices, don’t panic. Design is an evolution, not a one-time event.

Start small. Repaint a wall. Rehome a mass-market piece. Add bold wallpaper or invest in a unique vintage find. Each step moves you closer to a space that feels truly and unapologetically you. Because in the end, great design isn’t just about what’s trending—it’s about what endures.

keeping your pets cool this summer

As the summer heat arrives in full force, it’s more important than ever to think about the safety and comfort of our furry companions. Dogs and cats can quickly overheat during warm weather, especially during walks or time spent outside. July and August often bring high temperatures, and just like us, our pets need extra care to stay cool and hydrated.

When heading out on summer walks, always avoid the hottest parts of the day—early mornings or late evenings are ideal. Pavements can become scorching and burn your dog’s paws, so if you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog to walk on. Hydration is key, and never leave pets in parked cars, even for a minute.

Pet Stop provide a whole range of products you need to help your pets stay safe and cool this summer. From dog water bottles which are perfect for keeping your pooch hydrated while out and about, and even cooling mats which offer instant relief at home or in the garden. Whether you’re heading off on an adventure or relaxing in the shade, these summer essentials are ideal for keeping your pets comfortable.

Always ensure your pets have access to fresh water and plenty of shade, and watch for signs of overheating such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. With a little planning and the right products, you can keep your pets happy, healthy, and cool all summer long.

The practice invests heavily in state-of-the-art technology and ensures all staff engage in regular continuing professional development (CPD), so that your pet is always benefiting from the most current and effective veterinary medicine.

2. Empowering Owners Through Education

Great care doesn’t stop when you leave the consulting room. At Connaught, educating clients is a key part of the treatment plan. The team takes time to explain conditions, preventive measures, and lifestyle advice.

Connaught helps pet owners play an active role in keeping their companions healthy and happy. Whether it’s understanding nutrition, spotting early signs of illness, or knowing how to manage a chronic condition, the team is always ready to support and inform.

3. A Team That Grows Together

Behind every great veterinary practice is a great team - and Connaught invests deeply in theirs. Every staff member is encouraged to pursue ongoing training and development, ensuring the group not only keeps pace with advances in veterinary medicine but also leads the way in client care and service. Cannaught also has four certificate holders with interests in surgery, cardiology, feline medicine

PORTIONS MINUTES HOURS 4 30 3

Try this next Sunday if you fancy a bit of a change to your usual lunch. Yorkshire puddings are great with this dish.

METHOD:

1. Heat up a little olive oil in your casserole pot and brown off all sides of the ribs. Remove from the pot and set aside. Place the carrots, onion, garlic and celery in the pot and brown off a little then add the ribs back to the pot. Make the beef stock from OXO cubes or Knorr jelly pots, or make your own. (Although very time consuming)

2. Pour the beef stock and wine into the pot until it comes half way up the sides of the beef. You do not want to submerge the beef as it will fall apart. Place on the stove and bring to the boil then turn down, add in the tomato paste, thyme leaves and rosemary needles (chopped finely).

3. Season with salt and pepper, add 1 star anise and 1 tbsp of coriander seeds and simmer for about 2.5 hours checking occasionally to ensure the liquid is not reducing too much. Add a dash of water or left over wine and beef stock if any remains. Gently squeeze the beef and if it feels very tender remove it along with the carrots from the casserole and continue reducing the liquid. Keep the beef warm under parchment paper and a tea towel or in a warmer if you have one.

4. You can either leave the onions and celery in chunks or blend until smooth and return to the liquid pssing through a sieve first. Reduce the liquid until it coats the back of a spoon. If it looks as though the sauce is splitting a little simply add a dash of cold water.

5. While the beef is cooking bake the potatoes until soft. Scoop out al of the potato flesh and smooth in a mixing bow with the back of a spoon. Add the butter to melt and stir in then season with sea salt.

6. Place the beef and carrots on a baking tray and heat until the beef and carrots have browned. (About 12-15 minutes on 180oC)

7. Steam the cavolo nero for a few minutes and serve everything in a large pasta bowl if you have them .

8. Serve with a glass of red wine.

the heart of early years: educare in action

The early years of a child’s life are a time of extraordinary growth—physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. These formative years lay the foundation for all future learning, and at the heart of a truly nurturing early years environment lies the principle of educare: a seamless blend of education and care.

At its core, educare recognises that young children thrive when their developmental needs are met holistically. High-quality early years settings don’t just prepare children academically; they provide a safe, loving, and stimulating environment where curiosity is sparked, relationships are nurtured, and every child feels valued.

Children learn best through play and exploration, supported by adults who understand their individual needs. A strong educare approach ensures that children develop not only early literacy and numeracy skills but also confidence, resilience, and empathy—skills just as crucial for success in life.

At Newbridge Preparatory School, our Early Years setting reflects this philosophy. With small class sizes, experienced practitioners, and a warm, inclusive atmosphere, we take the time to truly know each child. Our outdoor learning spaces invite discovery and adventure, while our tailored curriculum introduces key skills in a meaningful, age-appropriate way.

Parents often say they chose Newbridge because their child is seen, heard, and supported every step of the way. And for us, that’s exactly what educare means: putting the child at the centre of everything we do.

Because when care and education go hand in hand, children don’t just learn—they flourish.

A DIARY OF EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES

spring diary

Catching up with the ever-dynamic Nick & Royston is always a highlight, and this spring, they’ve been busy making memories, attending glittering events and sharing some fabulous moments with friends. Here’s a peek into what they’ve been up to lately—and who they’ve been spending their time with!

THE BIG FINALE: A MILESTONE CELEBRATION

After a decade of unforgettable moments, The Real Housewives of Cheshire closed out its 10th season with a spectacular finale. To mark the occasion, many of the original housewives returned—including the alwaysglamorous Ampika Pickston. Having left the show in 2017, Ampika re-joined the cast for a special reunion, celebrating the iconic series’ incredible journey.

RETAIL THERAPY ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA

No one needs an excuse for a trip to the South of France, and Nick & Royston certainly didn’t hesitate when the opportunity arose to join friends Joanne and Malcolm Bridgwood for some much-needed retail therapy. With a family wedding on the horizon, Joanne was on the hunt for the perfect outfit and Nick & Royston were more than happy to offer their expert styling advice.

Their weekend was spent in the luxurious surroundings of the Carlton Hotel, Cannes, where they soaked up the sun, savoured the stunning views and indulged in some high-end shopping. After a successful shopping spree, the friends unwound at the magnificent GrandHotel du Cap-Ferrat. With panoramic views stretching from Nice to Monaco, Michelin-starred dining, a world-class spa and vibrant outdoor cabanas by the pool, it was the ultimate destination for relaxation and rejuvenation.

It was a weekend to remember—one that perfectly combined glamour, luxury and laughter.

BIRTHDAY BASH: A NIGHT IN BLACKPOOL

When close friend and former team member Nick Tucker was in London to style Gemma Collins and Claire Sweeney for a celebrity wedding, Nick & Royston seized the opportunity to plan a surprise birthday celebration. Welsh Nick had always dreamed of experiencing the iconic Funny Girls show in Blackpool, so they made it happen—turning the birthday weekend into an unforgettable trip.

True to Blackpool’s reputation, the night was filled with fun, laughter and plenty of new friendships. The weekend was a massive hit and the next trip to Blackpool is already in the diary!

WEDDING OF THE YEAR: A SPECTACULAR CELEBRATION

Nick & Royston have attended their fair share of weddings over the years, but the nuptials of Akaash and Alisha Sharma was truly something special. Invited by close friends Yogash and Bulvinder, the pair travelled to the stunning Dallas Burston Polo Club in Warwickshire to join over 400 guests for this epic celebration.

Set across 600 acres of idyllic countryside, the venue was the perfect backdrop for the bride and groom’s grand entrance—by helicopter, no less! The day was packed with show-stopping entertainment, including fire-eaters, acrobats, live bands and DJs, keeping guests entertained well into the night.

It was a day full of love and pure magic—a perfect beginning to a lifetime of happiness for the newlyweds.

24 hours in oxford –the city of dreaming spires

Founded in the eighth century, Oxford is an enchanting city of towering spires, renowned for its intriguing history, university, and colleges reflecting hues of gold beside the sedate river. The city was once walled and served as the border between the warring Vikings and Saxons and during the English Civil War it acted King Charles I’s capital whilst Oliver Cromwell and the Parliamentarians held sway over London. Located on the convergence of the rivers Cherwell and Thames, Oxford attracts hordes of visitors from all over the world and there is much to explore.

On arrival, I checked into The Store, a rather lovely hotel situated on Broad Street, in the historic Boswells department store, which was once located on Cornmarket Street and began trading in 1738. The current property has retained many period features, whilst reflecting modern, charming touches, which are sympathetic to its history. After a swift and efficient check-in my luggage was whisked away and I was escorted to the Balliol College Suite measuring 39 square metres. Wrapped around the corner of the property and on the first floor features include dual aspect windows, panelled walls, parquet flooring and high ceilings emphasising the space and light. I was delighted to discover that the large bathroom featured a rainfall shower, a free-standing bathtub and a generous selection of bath and body products, which I intended to make full use of.

After relaxing on the plump sofa and sipping on a piping hot cup of Nespresso espresso I had a spring in my step and I was ready to venture outside and headed posthaste for the Ashmolean Museum, a short stroll away on Beaumont Street.

Founded in 1683, Britain’s oldest museum is a must for art lovers and houses one of the most impressive collections of art and archaeology in the United Kingdom. Highlights include the world’s largest display of exquisite Raphael drawings, a fascinating collection of pre-Dynastic Egyptian material, Anglo-Saxon collections and exhibits of modern Chinese art.

I must confess that I should have kept an eye on the time as I spent some hours mesmerised by an enormous array of fabulous pieces including the magnificent Alfred Jewel, an Anglo-Saxon work made of quartz and glittering gold. Discovered in 1693 it dates back to the 9th century, during the reign of Alfred the Great. Another piece of huge interest is the stunning violin, the Messiah Salabue Stradivarius, made by Antonio Stradivari and dated 1716. I also stood transfixed as I gazed upon an Arab ceremonial gown owned by Lawrence of Arabia, one of my heroes.

A visit to Britain’s first public art collection at the Christ Church Picture Gallery is also absolutely essential and a short walk from the Ashmolean Museum. The collection, most of which was bequeathed by John Guise in 1765, includes spectacular paintings by Van Dyck, Tintoretto, Carracci, Frans Hals, Filippino Lippi and drawings by

Leonardo, Michelangelo and Rubens. The collection of 18th century English glass is impressive and the Russian icons and old master prints are quite simply breathtaking. With my intense scrutiny of the arts cut short as evening approached I headed out in search for a dining experience and came upon The Ivy Oxford, located on the High Street. The main restaurant features Art-Deco details, marble floors and comfy banquettes. I settled in immediately and ordered the Ivy’s classic shepherd’s pie accompanied by a glass of Cabernet Franc, which were served with aplomb and just the ticket. I could not resist ordering the strawberry and elderflower trifle and I did not feel the least bit guilty at the time but afterwards I took a very brisk short walk back to my hotel!

Up with the larks I ventured outside, bound for the Bodleian Libraries within the University of Oxford. Many of our prime ministers, Nobel laureates and high profile celebrities including Oscar Wilde, JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were members of Oxford’s Bodleian Library. I strolled around the 17th-century quad taking in the splendour of the architecture and reflected on the history of my surroundings. Founded in 1602 by Sir Thomas Bodley, the Bodleian Library is one of the oldest in Europe and the university’s main research library with millions of printed items.

As I emerged from the quad I stood outside the splendid Palladiun style Radcliffe Camera, designed by James Gibbs and completed in 1749. Alas, the building is not open to the public but of course many a visitor will pause outside to admire its imposing exterior. Close by, I spotted another small gathering of people taking photographs of the Bridge of Sighs. Completed in 1914, it is a skyway linking two sections of Hertford College.

Another of Oxford’s treasures is only a short walk away and I hurried along to Oxford’s Botanic Garden, which was founded in 1621. Crammed with more than five thousand plants, the garden’s main focus is for research.

Beside the River Cherwell, this haven is the perfect spot to relax.

As my visit to Oxford was coming to an end I had one more treat in store and hopped into a taxi for the short trip to the Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant located by the river Cherwell opposite the biggest and most popular punt station. The location is exceptional, a tranquil haven surrounded by beautiful scenery. I ordered the succulent Chana Masala, followed by the Pimm’s jelly and a chilled glass of Chardonnay and as I watched people embarking onto the punts I held my glass aloft in admiration for Oxford, the city of dreaming spires.

‘Top tip’ Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, is only a short drive from Oxford city-centre. A Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the UK’s grandest stately homes, it was completed in 1722 and reflects the magnificent baroque style. For more information visit blenheimpalace.com

vibrant weddings at mill barns

The Mill Barns with its neutral colour palette and large beamed ceilings, was the perfect backdrop for this vibrant wedding. Being a handpicked supplier to this amazing venue, we have styled it many times. When the couple opted for colour we had a good idea how incredible it could look.

Located in Alverley near the lovely market town of Bridgnorth, this venue definitely allows a large scope of ideas and options are virtually unlimited.

Set overlooking its own lake and in beautiful landscaped grounds, the venue inside is full of light framed by large glass windows showcasing the glorious landscape.

make it pop

So much colour was used throughout the wedding. The guest tables had mixed vibrant coloured gin bottles full of various wild flowers - and even the confetti embraced the colours.

Lots of florals where selected for this wedding such as Anemone, Ranunculus, Craspedia, Delphinium, Freesia, Scabiosa, Hyacinths and so many more.

capturing your expectations

The ceremony table display was designed to create a floral border in a garden. Having a grown on presentation displaying the couples selection at varying heights, really captured the full extent of florals and colour.

After the ceremony their eye catching display was placed along the top table and continued to be admired.

“We wanted to say a HUGE thank you for all the love and support Jo and the team gave us throughout our magical journey to becoming Mr & Mrs Gunnell. From the build-up to the big day itself – the whole team were simply amazing. Fantastic!

We’ve been inundated with beautiful messages and comments about our gorgeous wedding flowers - especially my beautiful, colourful bouquet! We couldn’t recommend Jo and the team enough; they really believed in our vision, and made our dreams come true. The support and attention to detail was fantastic - we wouldn’t change a single thing!”

keep it steady!

Did you know that your ears do so much more than allow you to enjoy the sounds of the world around you?

Your local hearing experts at Hear in Hagley, Hear in Wombourne and Hear in Rubery, understand that hearing health means so much more. It’s linked to your overall well-being, including your balance and stability. Research highlights a significant connection between hearing loss and an increased risk of falls, a concern we want to address proactively for our community.

How does hearing impact balance?

Your inner ear plays a crucial role in maintaining balance. Alongside processing sound, it houses the vestibular system, which senses movement and helps you stay oriented. When hearing is impaired, the brain has to dedicate more cognitive resources to processing sound, potentially leaving less attention available for balance control. This can make you more susceptible to losing your footing, especially in challenging environments.

Studies have shown that even mild hearing loss can triple the risk of accidental falls in older adults. This risk increases as hearing gets worse. Several factors contribute to this link. Reduced spatial awareness due to difficulty localising sounds can make navigating obstacles more challenging. Furthermore, the social isolation often associated with untreated hearing loss can lead to decreased physical activity and muscle weakness, further impacting balance.

The consequences of falls can be significant, ranging from minor injuries and reduced confidence to more serious fractures and hospitalisations. Addressing

hearing loss isn’t just about improving communication; it’s about safeguarding independence and quality of life.

There are 5 million falls reported each year, with 25% of those over 65 years old, 50% over 80 years old.

How can we help?

At our Hear In clinics, we take a holistic approach to your hearing health. Our comprehensive hearing assessments not only identify the extent of any hearing loss but also allow us to discuss potential implications for your balance. Several studies prove that hearing aids improve our balance & stability by improving spatial awareness and reducing the cognitive load on your brain, potentially contributing to better balance.

So, if you know someone that is not hearing so well and are not as steady on their feet, why not encourage them to take proactive steps and have their hearing checked.

A simple hearing assessment can be the first step towards a steadier and more confident future. Let us help you stay on your feet and continue enjoying life to the fullest. Remember, your ears are for more than hearing, they are integral part of your overall safety and well-being.

COMES COMES SUMMER SUMMER

if you are in your 50’s – is it time to get your plans for retirement in order?

For many of us in our 50s, retirement has shifted from a distant abstraction to a very real horizon. The career years that once seemed endless are now giving way to a new chapter — one filled with possibility, freedom, and a little reinvention. But how do you ensure that the retirement you imagine is the one you actually live?

The answer lies in deliberate, strategic preparation. And there’s no better time to begin than right now.

The Advantage of the Present Moment

If you’re in your 50’s and envision stepping away from full-time work within the next 10 to 15 years, the clock is very much ticking. In financial terms, a decade passes in a blink. But here’s the good news: this is a golden window — a time when your earning potential may be at its peak, your responsibilities more manageable, and your vision for the future much clearer.

Early retirement planning is often discussed in terms of decades, but even a well-crafted 10-to-15-year plan can make all the difference. What matters most is not how early you start, but how intentionally you act now.

Beyond Numbers: Designing Your Future Life

Retirement planning is not simply a numbers game — it’s a lifestyle exercise. What do your days look like once the routine of work falls away? Are you travelling in Europe in your motorhome? Restoring a vintage classic car? Thinking of getting involved in voluntary work?

Perhaps it’s about family time, a new garden, or writing a novel that interests you.

They are important factors that affect how much income you’ll need and how you’ll want to structure your finances. When planning is driven by purpose, the numbers start to serve the life — not the other way around.

Your Financial Starting Point

The first step is clarity: where are you today? Take stock of all your pensions, savings, and investments. Understand how much you’ve accumulated so far and what that might translate to in terms of income later. Many people find this exercise empowering.

Once you know your current position, you can begin to map out what’s required to bridge any gaps if there are any. Perhaps you need to boost pension contributions, restructure investments for growth or income, or reduce unnecessary expenditures. A professional financial adviser can help distil these choices into a realistic and achievable roadmap.

Building Your Retirement Road Map

Your retirement plan should fit your lifestyle, aspirations, and personal circumstances. A Retirement Road Map doesn’t just track savings or returns — it connects the dots between your financial assets and the kind of life you want to live.

It takes into account key milestones: when you plan to stop working, whether you want a phased transition,

your desired retirement income, and contingencies for healthcare or family support. It also considers legacy goals — do you want to pass wealth on, or spend freely while you can?

A great plan isn’t rigid. It evolves as your priorities and financial landscape shift. What remains constant is the need for visibility and control.

Planning for Income, Not Just Wealth

A common mistake is focusing too heavily on asset accumulation and too little on income sustainability. Retirement is not just about how much you have, but how reliably that wealth can provide for your lifestyle.

Work out how much you’ll need monthly and annually. Factor in inflation, rising healthcare costs, and discretionary spending like travel or hobbies. Will your income be drawn from pensions, ISAs, property, or other sources? How tax-efficient is the drawdown strategy? These are the questions that will shape your financial confidence in later life.

The Emotional Side of Retirement

A fulfilling retirement is not just financially secure — it’s emotionally rich. Many people are surprised to find the transition from career to leisure more challenging than expected. The loss of structure, purpose, and social interaction can be disorienting.

The best antidote is a plan that accounts for what you’re retiring to — not just what you’re retiring from. Build a vision that includes identity, community, and contribution.

Retirement can be one of the most rewarding phases of your life — if it’s designed with intent.

In Summary: The Time is Now

Your 50’s offer a rare convergence of wisdom, resources, and opportunity. While it may feel like there’s still time, the truth is that every year from here on counts.

The sooner you begin creating a thoughtful and comprehensive retirement plan, the greater your chances of crafting a life that feels not just secure — but deeply satisfying.

So don’t wait. Begin the conversation, run the numbers, and start shaping your future today. Your best years could very well be ahead of you.

what is a “handbag divorce”? a glamorous spin on break-ups

You might have seen the term “handbag divorce” pop up in the tabloids or social media. It’s not an official legal term, but it’s become a catchy way to describe short-lived, highdrama marriages—often involving the rich and famous— where the split becomes all about designer handbags, flashy cars, and luxury lifestyles.

In the UK, when a couple divorces, everything they own— yes, even that £15,000 Hermès bag—is potentially up for discussion. The law doesn’t care whose name is on the receipt. If it was bought during the marriage, it’s likely to be considered a shared asset.

But let’s be clear: courts don’t usually spend hours debating who gets the handbags or the artwork. Instead, judges look at the whole financial picture—homes, pensions, savings— and aim for fairness. Still, in high-net-worth cases, luxury items can take centre stage, either because of their value or the emotions attached.

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS FOR OVER 150 YEARS

Sometimes, the real fight isn’t about the handbag at all. It’s about what it represents—status, control, or a sense of identity. And when emotions run high, even the smallest item can spark a legal tug-of-war.

The takeaway? If you’re heading into marriage with valuable personal items, a prenuptial agreement might save a lot of hassle down the road. And if you’re going through a split, remember: it’s the big picture that counts— no matter how glamorous the details may seem. honda zr-v

Honda already have 2 vehicles in the SUV category, but they have decided to enter a third in to this very competitive category the ZR-V. It sits between the somewhat smaller HR-V and the larger CR-V, so they are really covering all the options, writes Bob Hickman.

Honda have now really capitalised on the hybrid system, the ZR-V is only available with a 2-litre petrol engine. This is pared to a CVT automatic transmission and it develops 184bhp, sufficient to give a 0-60 gallop in just under 8 seconds and a top speed for those interested of 108mph. It being a hybrid the combined CO2 figures is on the low side at 131, of course where this type of vehicle scores heavily is on fuel consumption and after a week in company with the vehicle and nearly 400 miles I managed to achieve 51.5mpg which for a vehicle of this size, I think is wonderful and commendable.

The vehicle is one that will adequately transport 5 adults although I suppose it is better 2 adults in the front and 2 children in the rear. There is quite a decent amount of space in the rear, although 6 footers like myself will probably struggle for headroom, the kneeroom however is very good. Boot capacity is not over generous with the 380 litres but it has a great shape.

What I like about Honda’s hybrid system is the electric motor which works in conjunction with the petrol engine, and it does a lot of hard work. You never ever know when it swops between electric power and petrol, such is the smoothness, just a little green symbol on the dashboard indicates that it is in EV mode.

The suspension was good and in and around twisty B roads it handled as a SUV should do, it is never going to be a sports car in performance but it certainly did not give any concerns with any degree of rock and roll. In the green mode the electric motor really is a bonus, it has super smooth linear acceleration and it has to be experienced to be appreciated.

From the driving perspective there are large windows all around, so the driving visibility is excellent. The A pillars at the front are on the small side to enhance visibility, I love, there is a rear facing camera which aids parking, in addition there are also front and rear sensors.

On the motorway the ZR-V was a quiet companion to be cocooned within, there was very little noise percolating back from the tyres or wind noise. The actual cabin of the vehicle, as previously mentioned, has plenty of room for the driver and passenger and a generous level of adjustment to the seats. If you choose the Sport or Avant,

you get the benefit of electric seat adjustments, again a bonus feature but one most people can manage without. If you carry a lot of equipment water bottles and bits and pieces, the door pockets are of a generous size and the cup holders in the front are reasonably large enough that the relevant cups or bottles can be contained.

The interior itself is quite simplistic and easy to understand, Honda have used synthetic leather in and around the dashboard and on other areas and all in all the interior of the cabin was pleasant. Climate control, is contained within the 9” infotainment screen, which was easy to use and also simple, it is nice to know that there are still a lot of equipment that is controlled from the steering wheel. I am not a lover of most of the controls features from the infotainment screen in the centre of the dashboard I think it detracts and is a potential safety hazard. If you have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto then the ZR-V ticks the boxes and you are able to connect to it.

As standard the ZR-V comes with a 5-year or 90,000 miles warranty and you can dip in to your pocket and pay to increase the guarantee if you so wish, and it also does include Roadside Assistance.

My particulars ZR-V Sport model had a on the road price of £41,745.

byd atto 3

Another vehicle manufacturer enters in to the hotly contested SUV electric range of vehicles a Company you probably have never heard of, but if you have a phone, tablet or a lap top it is quite probable that the battery is produced by this particular Company, writes Bob Hickman.

BYD, stands for Build Your Dream. The ATTO, 3 if you are looking for something quirky, then this is a vehicle you need to go and have a look at.

It has gimmicks in profusion and an interior that is mind boggling, it has a huge 15” infotainment screen in the centre of the dashboard, but at the press of a button it moves through 45 degrees from landscape to portrait. It took me 5 minutes to find the door handles and then found they were contained within a small speaker on the door. If you are a musician you are going to love the glove boxes on all of the doors, they have 3 guitar strings that are actually tuned and allow you to play a tune!!!

Gimmicks aside if you are in the market place for an electric vehicle then you really need to have a look at this particular derivative. it is bland, doesn’t particularly excite; the interior however is eccentric.

I found plenty of room for the driver and front passenger, the rear seats were more than adequate with plenty leg and headroom and a reasonable size boot to accommodate the luggage.

BYD suggest a range of 261miles but we all take that with a pinch of salt. Sadly, I suffer from range anxiety when I have an electric car and I am always paranoid if I am down to the last half or even a quarter battery capacity. What happens if Great Aunt Enid rings in the middle of the night having an issue and I need to travel the 70 miles to see her, can I get there and more important can I get back at that time of the day. I never really bothered about petrol when I had ½ or ¼ of a tank because I knew I could refuel.

The BYD has a large capacity 60.48kWh battery and can be charged by the mighty 150KWs machines if you can find one. BYD suggest a charging time of about 9 hours on a home charger or 44 minutes on the huge massive ones.

During a week in company with the ATTO 3 I managed to achieve 200 miles on a full charge.

The performance was adequate, it was nothing like previous electrics, acceleration was good but it didn’t have that kick in the back, almost rocket like performance that I had experienced previously with electrics. A 0-62 time of 7.2 seconds is not to be scoffed at and a top speed

of 99mph is more than adequate. There are 4 modes to the front wheel drive, Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow, I just put it in Eco and found it more than adequate. I did try the Sport to see if it altered the characteristics dramatically and yes it did a little, but nothing out of this world.

One particular feature that was brilliant is the graphics on the screen, the satellite navigation was superb, it was easy and the voice reminded you when you were close to a school zone and more importantly tipped you off in plenty of time for the dreaded speed or red lights cameras, a very, useful feature. A wireless phone charging pad is included.

It is gratifying to note that the ATTO 3 has gained a 5* safety rating.

Without doubt the BYD range are on a roll and it is interesting that in the first quarter of 2025, BYD sold more cars than in the whole of 2024.

The BYD ATTO 3 has a recommended price starting at £37,705, my particular top of the range Design model was on the road at £39,705.

BYD are confident in their products and give a warranty for the battery of 8 years or 125,000 miles This should give peace of mind to the purchaser, and allay concerns as to the longevity of the battery.
