Stylish retreats for inspiring timeouts

Since 2001 we have been searching for the new, the aesthetic, the inspiring. Looking for places, experiences and people that broaden our horizons, appeal to our senses and inspire our thoughts. When we find what we are looking for, we come to rest. Then we have discovered one of the hotels that we would like to introduce to you as a Lifestylehotel.

Lifestylehotels™ takes you to places where you are allowed to unfold. Not only discover new places, but also discover yourself. The world we would like to take you to, is a world of allowing and mindfulness. Mindfulness is more than a buzzword in many of our member hotels. Farmtotable concepts, the support of local artists, a particularly resourceconserving operation and handling of the hotel, or the meditative experience of nature are just a few examples of the innovations of our member hotels. The demand for aesthetics and quality is and remains central to our vision of a modern hotel industry, but more mindful and sustainable in the sense of the new spirituality.

Behind all this are ideas and above all people our hoteliers who create something unique with their honest efforts. We want to understand their vision in order to continue telling their stories. At some point, we start searching again, put out our feelers and activate our sensors, because new things are always being created and existing things are changing.

GROSSARL | AUSTRIA

Hotel Nesslerhof

Experience genuine hospitality and wonderfully spacious interiors at this design hotel. 86 rooms & suites, some with private spa combine cosiness with alpine charm: wood from local forests, loden, leather and breathtaking views of the Salzburg mountains create a welcoming and homey atmosphere.

Treat yourself to time in the spa and relax in one of the 8 different saunas or in the 3,000 sqm gardens and sunbathing lawns while enjoying the breath-taking views of the alps.

The 1.300 sqm “Wasserwelt” (“waterworld”) has an indoor pool with panoramic view, an outdoor pool, a salt water outdoor pool and a 800 sqm natural swimming pond. Six different quiet rooms offer plenty of space for all guests.

The hotels own butcher’s shop stands for quality, craftsmanship and passion, combined with the highest-quality Austrian ingredients and seasoned with fresh herbs and spices from the Grossarl region.

Experience ultimate convenience with ski-in, ski-out access thanks to the new 10-seater Kieserlbahn cable car, taking you directly from the Hotel Nesslerhof to the stunning Skylounge Wolke 7.

"A insider tip in the Austrian Alps, where modern comfort harmonizes with untouched nature. At Nesslerhof, every moment is a breath of fresh air."

"N" for nature and Nesslerhof

Or is it N for Nesslerhof? We’re happy to go with both. The Neudegger family has redesigned the garden at their wellness hotel in Grossarl and turned it into a natural and productive place of abundance and harmony – with fruit for the kitchen, wormwood for the bar, water for refreshment and flowers for the soul. Sounds like a modern-day Garden of Eden? That it is!

"N" for new beginnings

Is it really possible to avoid being happy when you see beautiful flowers? Hardly. That’s why in the new Living Garden at the Nesslerhof, they bloom all summer long, so all manager Tina Neudegger has to do is go to the garden to collect stems for arrangements. Planted in groups, verbena, lady’s mantle, echinacea, hydrangeas, lavender and day lilies blend with yews pruned to resemble clouds and single old Austrian pines. If you were a bird and could fly over the Nesslerhof grounds, you’d be hard pressed to spot an inch that hasn’t been planted. There are even sedums and a natural flower meadow on the roof.

"N" for Not your average kitchen

garden

The grounds are encircled by fruit trees, whose produce is used in the kitchen. Red, tart fruits are then made into jam, for example, and served with breakfast. The herb garden is well tended and looked after by Tina Neudegger. She is particularly proud of the wormwood plants, which are served at the bar as wine, as well as at the Garden Bar, which

is just as inviting as the inside for watching the day go by, playing chess or reading. The new swimming pond will always be within view. It’s a large pool at 800 m2, up to three metres deep and crystal clear. The water comes from the property’s own well. It can also be enjoyed in winter as an ice bath and is the ideal complement to the 25-metre heated outdoor pool.

"N" for neighbourly love

Now, how do you go about planning a leisure area in a hotel? Preferably in a way that means it aligns with your philosophy. At the Nesslerhof, the focus is the link between joy and nature, which the Neudegger family has implemented in partnership with landscape designers Nentwich. Did they decide to work together because of their common initials? Maybe. But what is certain is that it’s also because of their shared affinity for natural aesthetics.

The entire area covers 30 hectares. There are no neighbors here, unless you refer to the forest inhabitants as such of this hideaway.

The hotel with chalet village and bathing pond has grown organically from an old farm. Many natural materials and earthy colors underline the natural character: linen, loden, gnarled old wooden beams. The Heaven Spa is based on the power of nature. And the natural cuisine also focuses on unadulterated food.

It is becoming increasingly popular to experience nature by bike. There are several opportunities to do this around Puradies. Although that is an understatement. The Saalfelden-Leogang bike region is one of the largest and most diverse in the country. Here you will find mountain bike world champion routes as well as idyllic cycle paths in the valley and the famous Epic Bikepark.

Refugium Lunz

Dive into the lake of naturalness.

The Refugium is located directly on the church square in Lunz am See, the Ybbs and the Gothic parish church from the 15th century to the side. The history of the house with its 23 rooms also goes back 5 centuries.

The owners, Joachim Mayr and Heinz Glatzl, felt obligated to this history when remodeling. They did not want to create just another design hotel, but rather a tender coexistence between old and new, a place of contemplation and refuge, precisely the Refugium.

The vision of a place where the desire for new things and the appreciation of the past find common expression has taken shape with the Refugium. Heart and soul, dedication and the clear aesthetic concept are reflected in the design of the rooms. It is a skillful play with textures, structures, shapes and colors. The commitment to authentic craftsmanship and attention to detail can be seen and felt throughout the hotel.

Numerous partners, from the Formdepot cooperative founded by Joachim and Heinz, were involved in the remodeling and furnishing of the hotel. Formdepot is an association of craftsmen, architects and designers based in Vienna Ottakring.

Salzburg meets Venice

Italian influence in Salzburg began in the 16th century, when Venetian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi was comissioned with the planning of a new city layout. In cooperation with his successor Santino Solari, he created the look for which the city of Mozart today is world-famous. The connection of Salzburg and Venice is emphasized with an innovative concept.

Located in one of Salzburg’s top locations, the hotel is dominated by the colour blue: blue as the lagoon and the heaven. Thanks to this colour scheme an unique atmosphere and style have been created that convey an incomparable lifestyle experience.

In 56 exclusive rooms, that show exceptional attention to detail, new standards have been set. These can also be found at the hotel’s rooftop location on the 7th floor - with an outstanding view of the city.

Located on the hotel‘s 2nd floor, the Honeymoon Suite offers a breathtaking view of the Fortress Hohensalzburg as well as the Salzach. The suite itself is absolutely made to fall in love with, but its eye-catcher definitely is the historically protected stucco ceiling, which is one-of-a-kind with its beauty and opulence.

"At

Hotel Stein, the light dances differently— filtered through exquisite Venetian glass chandeliers, handcrafted Murano lamps, and shimmering details that transform this Salzburg icon into a living work of art."

"The beauty of Salzburg lies not only in its baroque architecture but in the way the city’s spirit is perfectly intertwined with the breathtaking landscapes that surround it."

BERLIN | GERMANY

Wilmina Hotel Berlin

From a former women's prison to a tranquil hotel oasis

In the heart of Charlottenburg, the Wilmina stands as an extraordinary hotel with a rich history. Originally a courthouse and women's prison, the protected architectural ensemble was transformed by architect duo Grüntuch Ernst into a welcoming space. They initiated and manage the project.

The classical façade along Berlin's Kantstraße hides a hidden idyll – a newly designed hotel offering 44 unique rooms and suites, a restaurant, and a multidisciplinary art and culture space amidst red brick buildings and lush courtyards.

Built in 1896, the structures served as a courthouse and prison until 1985. After a decade-long sustainable transformation by Grüntuch Ernst Architects, the result is a contemplative refuge blending historical and contemporary elements, featuring bright rooms with diverse layouts and unique touches.

Guests can enjoy stylish rooms, enchanting garden views, and amenities like a library, fireplace lounge, spa, sauna, and gym. The Lovis restaurant, adorned with artistic lights, and the Amtsalon hosting art and design projects, offer a unique urban escape. An open history book and a retreat for relaxation and exploration.

Adjacent to the hotel reception, the in-house bakery Wilmina Brot offers handcrafted sourdough bread, baked with time and care. Meanwhile, the LOTTA day bar serves a curated selection of wines, aperitifs, and cocktails, along with homemade sweet and savory snacks, best enjoyed in the summer garden.

"Wilmina’s architectural alchemy turns Berlin’s raw history into a lesson in quiet elegance—brick, glass, and greenery in perfect dialogue."

Wilmina Hotel Berlin: A Hidden Retreat in the Heart of the Capital

Berlin, known for its relentless energy, vibrant creativity, and historical diversity, is a city that never rests. Among the bustling streets, endless cultural offerings, and the city’s fast-paced rhythm, finding a peaceful haven may seem impossible. Yet, in the Westend district of Berlin, there lies an unexpected refuge: the Hotel Wilmina.

Housed in a former women’s prison, built in the 19th century, the Wilmina has transformed the historical architecture into a tranquil oasis. Surrounded by lush gardens, serene courtyards, and quiet terraces, it feels like a microcosm of calm, shielded from the noise and hustle of Berlin.

An Architectural Transformation

What sets the Wilmina apart from other hotels is its seamless conversion of a historic building. The high walls and the almost cloister-like atmosphere of the former prison naturally provide a sense of seclusion. The focus of the architectural design was to preserve the original structure while integrating modern, comfortable elements. The result is a space filled with natural light, where elegant minimalism creates an atmosphere of peace.

The rooms are deliberately simple, avoiding unnecessary decoration. Natural materials, soft colors, and clean lines foster a calming aesthetic. Large windows offer views of the gardens, allowing guests to enjoy the lush surroundings—a refreshing contrast to the urban landscape of Berlin.

A Sanctuary for Body and Mind

The Wilmina is more than just a place to stay; it’s a space for slowing down. The lush gardens surrounding the hotel invite

guests to take a stroll, read, relax, or meditate. Here, far from the city’s noise, you can sway in a hammock or simply listen to the birds chirping.

For those seeking deeper relaxation, the hotel offers a wellness area with a sauna and a small pool. These facilities are designed to provide intimacy and tranquility—perfect for calming the senses and escaping the pressures of everyday life.

Conclusion

The Wilmina Hotel is a true retreat in the heart of Berlin’s fast-paced urban core. With its harmonious blend of historic architecture and modern design, peaceful gardens, and calming amenities, it offers a rare oasis of tranquility and rest. For travelers seeking to escape the pulse of Berlin without leaving the city, Wilmina is the perfect refuge—a place where time slows down, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: your own well-being.

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN | GERMANY

Seegut Zeppelin

Surrounded by silence and beauty – a retreat that opens the heart and mind.

The new Seegut Zeppelin, which opened its doors on 6 May 2024, is located in the middle of an old landscaped park directly on Lake Constance. The hotel buildings clad in glazed spruce wood around the Villa Gminder in Friedrichshafen-Fischbach are just 50 metres from the shore. The modern solitary buildings blend discreetly into the protected park. Inside, the surrounding nature is impressively restaged through wall-high windows. The furnishings are based on natural materials and high-quality design; the cuisine is based on an innovative concept with a vegetarian focus. The name of the hotel is Seegut Zeppelin.

The Seegut Zeppelin is one of the few hotels on Lake Constance that is located directly on the shore and has its own access to the lake. Generosity, space and outstanding interior design characterise the four modern stand-alone buildings that surround the listed Villa Gminder.

"Where Lake Constance tells stories in waves, and every sunset paints a masterpiece." Seegut Zeppelin is more than just a sanctuary of comfort – this is where you rediscover yourself."
"In the Bodensee region, nature whispers through every wave, and history lingers in every stone— it's a place where past and present dance together."

Nature flying high at Seegut Zeppelin

Some people collect stamps – others collect special plants. The story of the garden surrounding Seegut Zeppelin begins in 1907, when the former textile manufacturer Gustav Gminder had a villa built on the shores of Lake Constance as a summer retreat. As far as we know, he was not fond of stamps, but exotic trees from all over the world –including a sequoia from California. And because the property has always been in careful hands over the years, we can still admire this diverse stock of trees today. And much more besides. Because the Fennel family is now respectfully continuing this legacy.

A garden with a lake view

When we talk about a garden here, we actually mean a 4-hectare landscaped park. It is characterised not only by its seclusion, the 200-metre-long shoreline and the breathtaking view of the lake and the Alps, but also by its varied design, always with a view to what is good for nature, the environment and ultimately also for people.

Meadows, trees and so much more

You can probably guess from this that it is not just a simple meadow with a few trees. Even back then, the garden was characterised by its unusual and varied design. There is a densely wooded area, a park-like area with inviting paths and wild flower meadows, an avenue of lime trees, a meadow orchard with wild shrubs that produce cornelian cherries, pears and sea buckthorn, bee colonies, raised beds with herbs for teas and cut flowers for decoration, a natural nursery with wild flowers, herbs, bees and bumblebees, as well as a lawn with large steps and antique bathhouses.

Never monotone

No two places are the same and every angle reveals its very own view. The overall picture is so varied and changes with the time of day. And yet it radiates a harmonious tranquillity, naturalness and aplomb that is directly transferred to you. It is in harmony with the buildings, with the surroundings and with the people who care for it so lovingly and those who value it.

Das Graseck certainly lives up to its slogan „my mountain hideaway“: It is the perfect retreat, only accessible with the hotel’s own cable car or, in exceptional cases, with the hotel shuttle. One highlight is the preventive medicine centre which adjoins the hotel. The centre provides a complete range of check-up and preventive medicine services.

Quite apart from the centre, Das Graseck is committed to its guests’ health. The spa is a treat for body and mind, with its biosauna, steam „grotto“, different quiet rooms and two different pools. Guests can also sample the delicious, healthy, natural cuisine at the hotel’s two restaurants and a great mix of sport and relaxation out of doors.

TIMMENDORFER STRAND | GERMANY

Barefoot beachlife under northern lights

Along the seven kilometres long sandy beach of Timmendorfer Strand in Lübeck Bay you can find the Baltic Sea lifestyle hotel, SAND. The boutiqe hotel is only 50 m from the beach with numerous beach bars and the Sea Life Centre situated in the direct vicinity.

The philosophy “Sand Aspires Natural Design” is reflected in the natural products that have been used in every area of the hotel from the interior to the kitchen. Natural materials and accessories made of items that have been washed up on the beach, in combination with clear colours and fine design, create a unique atmosphere for moments of relaxation.

The furnishings in the 72 rooms and 3 suites are made of recycled teak and the bedding of pure natural materials, offering sophisticated living in a relaxed atmosphere.

Perfect relaxation can also be found in the SAND feel well-area on the hotel’s rooftop: an outdoor sauna, ergonomic sun loungers and an outdoor sleeping beach chair offer best preconditions to enjoy some calm hours.

The SAND late riser breakfast offers fresh and regional delicacies and the environmentally-friendly use of geothermal energy to cool and heat the floors in the rooms with heat pumps. This natural atmosphere makes it easy for guests to relax and enjoy their holiday to the fullest.

Searching for the Smiling Whale

The SAND is just a few steps away from Timmendorfer Beach and stands for individuality, the very highest quality, sustainability, and closeness to nature. If you are very lucky, you might catch a glimpse of him during a walk along the beach near the Boutique Hotel SAND: as elegant as a dolphin, the porpoise surfaces to catch its breath, seemingly smiling good-naturedly. This impression is due to the slightly raised corners of his mouth. Harbor porpoises are the only whales native to the North and Baltic Seas.

"There are hardly any whale or dolphin species that are so inconspicuous. You have to be really lucky to see them."

SAND - Protecting the Porpoise Life has not been easy for the porpoise in recent years. Fisheries, noise, pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction pose serious threats. The Hotel SAND has been committed to whale conservation for many years and is proud to be a pioneer in sustainability at the Baltic Sea.

"We are certified according to the German Sustainability Code and live up to this aspiration wherever we can.",
Marion Muller, hotel manager at Hotel SAND

SAND supports the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) through a corporate sponsorship. Guests who book directly via the hotel’s website can contribute € 1 per booking to porpoise

conservation. In 2024 alone, guests donated € 812 to this important cause.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything at SAND—whether through furniture made of recycled teak, beds with purely natural materials, accessories crafted from stranded goods, or eco-friendly energy solutions such as geothermal heat. The hotel deliberately goes one step further, minimizing plastic waste and implementing environmentally conscious practices.

SANDtaste – A New Breakfast Concept SAND has redefined its culinary approach, now focusing entirely on breakfast for late risers. Two breakfast chefs prepare fresh and regional delicacies daily, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable start to the day. Guests can indulge in the SANDtaste breakfast until 1 PM—with organic eggs from local farms, homemade bread, and delicious jams such as marzipan-strawberry or mango-mint, which have become popular souvenirs.

Sustainable Growth with Perspective

The SAND story continues! Expanding its portfolio, the brand now shines with a second boutique hotel on the North Sea—Hotel SANDglow in Husum, a radiant retreat in the heart of ever-changing coastal nature.

Soon, guests will have the unique opportunity to explore both porpoise habitats, the Baltic and North Seas, on eco-friendly bamboo bikes. But these aren’t just any bikes—both SAND hotels have teamed up with myBoo, a Kiel-based brand that crafts handmade bamboo bicycle frames in Ghana, creating jobs and funding a local school. Ride with purpose, embrace sustainability, and maybe, just maybe, catch a glimpse of a smiling porpoise along the way.

Dexamenes Seaside Hotel

Rough luxe experience in converted concrete wine tanks

Dexamenes Seaside Hotel is located on one of the most unspoilt coastlines of the Western Peloponnese, on Kourouta Beach. The former winery, located directly on the sea front, consists of wine tanks, which have been minimally restored to retain their original industrial appearance, and are laid out in two parallel rows of concrete blocks with an extension in steel frame construction. The renowned Athens architecture firm k-studio was commissioned to redesign the former wine factory. From the outset it was clear that the strong history and raw beauty of the existing buildings should not only be preserved, but be showcased in a design that would breathe new life into their walls. The new design compliments their brutality with elegant interventions and transform their austere functionality into a place of calm, comfort and relaxation. A complimentary palette of concrete, steel, timber and engineered glass ensures that new construction elements tread lightly, leaving the existing buildings relatively untouched and retaining their strong presence.

34 industrial chic suites in converted former wine tanks and 2 former ChemLabs dating back to the 1920s are available for design-loving guests to enjoy an exceptional stay from April to October. Many of them have a wide covered terrace overlooking the Ionian Sea. The patina of exposed interior concrete walls contrasts with engineered glass partitions and polished terrazzo floors while elements of timber add dashes of warmth in a nod to the area’s nautical history. Dexamenes is an architectural slice of Greek trading history on the mainland’s western Peloponnese coast.

In addition to its architectural roots, the luxury resort also focuses on regional culture and local experiences. Considering that the Peloponnese peninsula has more vineyards and grape varieties than any other region in Greece, it is not surprising that local specialities and viticulture play an essential role at Dexamenes Seaside Hotel. The kitchen prepares a variety of choices from breakfast to dinner that vary from degustation menus to hyperlocal meals with traditional references, putting in high priority the dietary preferences of each guest. Guest can indulge in Greek cuisine at the taverna or enjoy a drink at the beachfront bar-lounge.

Peace and relaxation can be found in an ex wine Silo Tank converted into a contemporary sanctuary where therapies such as yoga, sound healing and massage treatments take place.

AMALIADA

"Dexamenes unique architectural charm beckons travelers seeking an offbeat escape. Nestled along the sandy shores of Kourouta Beach, this idyllic spot offers a serene vista of the golden sands and the shimmering Ionian Sea, with Zakynthos island on the horizon."

"Cycladic simplicity, at one with the earth that surrounds them. Designed with intimacy, serenity and elegance in mind, Gundari is the epitome of understated luxury."

Gundari Resort at Folegandros: Mindfulness and Luxury in Harmony with Nature

Hidden among the more famous Cycladic islands like Santorini and Mykonos lies Folegandros – an island that, despite its unparalleled beauty, remains off the beaten tourist track. Here, where rugged cliffs plunge into the crystal-clear Aegean Sea and picturesque villages dot the hilly landscape, you can experience the authentic Greece in its purest form.

The essence of Folegandros lies in its tranquility, its authenticity, and its untouched nature. The island is a haven for those seeking peace and seclusion. Around every corner, whitewashed houses with blue domes radiate timeless beauty, while the narrow, cobbled streets echo the deep history of the Cyclades. But what truly sets Folegandros apart is its ability to foster moments of inner reflection – far from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Enter the Gundari Resort, a luxurious sanctuary that blends seamlessly with the island’s landscape. The resort combines modern design with traditional architecture to create an atmosphere that soothes both body and soul.

The Gundari Resort is in harmony with the natural environment of Folegandros, designed with sustainability and mindfulness at its core. The architecture mirrors the island’s shapes: minimalist, cube-like white buildings that gracefully nestle into the rocky terrain. Large windows and expansive terraces offer breathtaking views of the endless sea and dramatic cliffs – perfect for enjoying the beauty of the surroundings without disrupting them.

Each of the resort’s rooms and suites is a space of relaxation. Natural materials, soft colors, and carefully chosen design pieces create a harmonious ambiance. Instead of technological distractions, the Gundari focuses on simplicity and balance, helping guests fully immerse themselves in the present moment.

Mindful Experiences

Mindfulness is woven into every aspect of the Gundari Resort – from the architecture to the activities. The resort offers daily yoga and meditation classes, often held on the cliffs with views of the sunrise or sunset. These serene and reflective spots make it easy to clear the mind and rediscover one’s balance.

Culinary mindfulness is also a priority at the Gundari. The cuisine pays homage to local traditions, using only seasonal, organic ingredients from the region. The dishes are not only light and healthy but also reflect the rich flavors of Cycladic cuisine. Guests are invited to savor their meals mindfully and slowly – a moment to pause and appreciate.

An Authentic Cycladic Experience

Folegandros itself offers countless opportunities for slowing down. Beyond relaxing days at the beach, with its crystal-clear waters, there are numerous hiking trails crisscrossing the island. These paths lead past hidden coves, small churches, and endless views of the Aegean. The island’s subtle beauty encourages visitors to discover nature’s small wonders and leave the everyday behind.

One of the island’s highlights is the visit to the charming main village of Chora. Perched on a hill, it offers spectacular views of the sea. The winding streets, lined with whitewashed houses and colorful flower pots, invite you to stroll and dream. In the evening, the small taverns come to life, where you can sip wine and listen to traditional music, feeling a sense of absolute freedom and contentment.

VILLAGE GADHOLI | INDIA
"A modernist masterpiece in the heart of the Himalayas, effortlessly blending sleek design with the spiritual essence of Kasar Devi."

The Kumaon and the Healing Himalayas

In the mountains of India, you’ll find the meaning of life, or so they say. Especially at Hippie Hill. The spiritual radiance of the Kasar Devi Temple extends all the way to The Kumaon, a design retreat with minimalist architecture by Pradeep Kodikara and Jineshi Samaraweera and plenty of space and tranquillity for the healing search for truth, wisdom and freedom. We scale the peak of regeneration with these five experiences, which make a stay at the remote resort so unlike any other:

YOGA AND MEDITATION

You can of course practise both of these almost anywhere. But nowhere does it feel anywhere near as natural as here in the place where it all started. At The Kumaon itself, there are daily sessions to enhance flexibility, strength and mindfulness. They take place outdoors in harmony with the surroundings. The Kasar Devi Temple is also a good yoga and meditation spot and has already captivated celebrities like Bob Dylan and Timothy Leary.

FIDDLEHEAD

No, we’re not talking about music. The vegetable just looks similar to the snail shape of the neck of the instrument. It comes from the Kumaon forests and is the perfect example of the flavour of the Himalayas, as well as being representative of the hotel’s farm-to-table concept. Ingredients from the surrounding area are transformed here into unique dishes using modern techniques, resulting in countless “mmms” and “ooohs”.

CHHOLIYA

The traditional Chholiya sword dance is performed during the dance shows at The Kumaon, with the dancers wearing garments in vivid colours and moving to the rhythm of drums and the sound of the Shehnai wind instrument. The vibrating movements symbolise the pride of the population and tell stories of the Himalayas. The upbeat rhythms and powerful presence of the dancers invites you to stop and consciously enjoy the moment.

BIRDS

The blaze of colour of the birds in the Himalayas is magical, their song is captivating. The feeling of freedom they convey when they float through the air, somewhere between the sky and the earth, is indescribable. You don’t need to be a passionate birdwatcher to feel their impact. The following species of bird with almost fairy-tale-sounding names are native to the area: Koklass Pheasant, Cheer Pheasant, Red-billed Blue Magpie, White-throated laughingthrush, Rufous Sibia, Grey-winged Blackbird, Great Barbet, Himalayan Woodpecker, Brown-fronted Woodpecker, Mountain Hawk-Eagle, Indian Black Eagle, Sparrowhawk, Indian Verditer Flycatcher, Grey-headed Flycatcher, Yellow-browed Tit, Green-tailed Sunbird, Black-throated Sunbird, Himalayan Griffon anScalybreasted Munia. And in winter they are joined by the migratory birds Whitecapped Redstart, Blue-capped Redstart and Common Rosefinch.

VIEW

During the day, it’s the majestic and snow-capped mountains and the lush forests of the Himalayas that help to cast your thoughts away into the distance and achieve a broad enough perspective. During the night, it is the clear, starry sky that tempts you to enter a dream world. With special guides, we discuss Indian folklore and myths relating to constellations, using the stars as nature’s map and observing planets like Venus and Mars using telescopes.

RIPOSTO | ITALY

Zash Country Boutique Hotel & Spa Design hotel in an acient palmento on a vulcanic island

Zash is a boutique hotel where guests rediscover a time where they live in another dimension, made of slow gestures, new visions and mysterious voices: zash, splash, cucù, crag, ciuf, druum, pluf - the instinctive and hidden sounds of nature. To be surrounded by the volcano stones and scents of orange blossom, then all is quiet. It is the pleasure of life.

The aim of the design concept of the architects Antonio Iraci and Carla Maugeri was that elegant historical fragments meet the contemporary. The 16 rooms which include 7 suites, bring out the physicality of nature respecting the traces of the past. The majesty of Mount Etna and the transparency of the sea are the two strong contrasts that join together in the micro territories of this splendid side of Sicily.

This concept is carried through to the culinary experiences of the hotel. The Zash Restaurant is located where time has stopped: a special cozy intimate space. Where wine was fermenting in the old days, guests can experience the slow dimension

of tastes, space and times. The Chef Giuseppe Raciti and his team mix creativity, tradition and territory to create the one star Michelin cuisine.

Sextantio

Albergo Diffuso

Culturally historical project that evokes the spirit of ancient rural life

Sextantio Albergo Diffuso is a fortified medieval village in the mountains of Abruzzo in the National Park Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. The hotel breathes life back into the historic castle village. With the help of the Museum “Genti d’Abruzzo” over 10 years has been tried to remain faithful to the ancient traditions and customs and to give the hotel as best as possible the original identity stamp of a medieval village. Travel through time, into another world and let yourself be enchanted.

The interior design of the rooms is inspired by pictures taken by the Swiss guide Paul Scheuermeier in Abruzzo in the 1920s. In order to preserve the unity of the aesthetic-affective interior design and avoid the excessive use of contemporary elements, native objects, as well as ancient and traditional local materials are used. The search for the archaic soul of these spaces has led to the preservation of the small windows, the subdued light, the uneven floors. Handmade soaps from olive oil and other products made strictly according to traditional methods are part of the thoughtful decoration of the rooms.

The restaurant “Locanda sotto gli Archi” is dominated by two large stone ceiling arches and a central fireplace. All furniture is primitive, minimal and antique dark wooden furniture. The museum dedicated to the people of Abruzzo was the inspiration for the handcrafted plates and mugs used for all meals and drinks. All food is based on what would have been available and eaten back then. Local ingredients like native, locally grown crops are prepared into traditional dishes according to the original recipes.

SANTO STEFANO DI SESSANIO | ITALY
"All food is based on what would have been available and eaten back then. We use native, locally grown crops and recreate original recipes."

"Gran Sasso is where Italy’s wild heart beats strongest— a land of soaring limestone peaks, sun-drenched meadows, and villages frozen in time. It is a place for dreamers, wanderers, and those who seek beauty in its purest form."

The hotel interiors are a fascinating mosaic of styles that give each space a highly original and unique look.

Each of the 10 rooms is characterized by a precise identity. During the restoration, the history and traditions of Venice were carefully preserved, and are now enhanced by the modern design of the selected furnishings and fabrics. The interior of the rooms is a successful mosaic of different styles, which give each room its unique character. In many places in the hotel there are paintings by Julian Kohl, which the artist painted exclusively for the hotel. Genji Kyoto

A Tribute to Japanese Aesthetics

Located in a tranquil riverside neighborhood at the heart of Kyoto, GENJI Kyoto is a contemporary interpretation of Machiya townhouses, marrying traditional concepts with modern amenities. Inspired by the Japanese masterpiece Tale of Genji, the story of which took place in the vicinity, the hotel’s designers took motifs from the novel to create a wabi sabi world of beauty and harmony.

The building is modern, with Western-style rooms and beds. But the features, materials, details, ambience and space arrangements are Japanese. There is a Zen garden for contemplation, a rooftop garden for connecting with nature, and pocket gardens in and around the rooms. This is a very Japanese concept where gardens are created to blur the lines between inside and outside. Having access to nature and the seasons while being indoors has been a perpetual quest of the Japanese people, starting with the imperial gardens of the Heian period through the centuries to the pocket gardens in people’s townhouses.

The hotel’s walls are concrete, but the Japanese technique of imprinting cedar gives them the look and feel of organic wood. In the lobby there is handmade Washi paper incorporated into the windows, producing a stunning play of light and shadows that is a quintessential feature of Japanese design. Modern amenities complement the overall concept, achieving a perfect balance between tradition and innovation.

The rooms and suites at GENJI KYOTO are showcases of Kyoto artisanship. Custom-designed and handmade furniture, warm solid wood, natural fabrics, and Washi lamps create a Japanese ambience that is both modern and timeless. Expansive windows frame picturesque views of serene gardens or robust wildlife on Kamo River. Paintings by young Kyoto artists pay homage to chapters and themes of the Tale of Genji, said to be the oldest novel in the world. Each room has a tatami sitting area, writing desk, dining table, and soaking tub.

Dining at GENJI KYOTO is a relaxed affair. In a city of diverse culinary choices and distinction, the hotel’s seasonal menu of Japanese comfort food - Wagyu Donburi rice bowl, Japanese Curry Rice, Japanese Appetizer Plate and Matcha dessert - has come to be embraced by many a nostalgic traveller longing for respite and relaxation. The hotel also offers a complimentary Matcha-making session - an intimate alternative to the more formal and austere tea ceremony popular amongst tourists.

More than just a hotel, GENJI Kyoto serves as a cultural bridge between past and present. Amidst the vibrant city, it offers a sanctuary for relaxation and contemplation, inviting guests to experience Japan’s timeless elegance in a refined but cosy setting.

"Nestled in the heart of Kyoto, a serene garden sanctuary invites you to immerse yourself in Japanese culture within an elegant contemporary setting."

Hotel K5

The japanese Art of Subtle Boundlessness

The Hotel K5, located in Nihonbashi Kabutocho, is a striking blend of history, culture, and modern design. Originally constructed in 1923 as a bank, the building was transformed into a unique design hotel in 2020. Nestled next to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the K5 bridges traditional Tokyo with the trendy eastern districts. Its central location makes it ideal for exploring landmarks such as Tokyo Station, the Imperial Palace, and Ginza, all within walking distance.

The Hotel's design, envisioned by the Swedish architectural studio Claesson Koivisto Rune, revolves around the Japanese concept of Aimai, meaning "vague" or "ambiguous."

In Japanese culture, this term has a poetic and positive connotation, emphasizing openness and harmony.

This principle permeates the hotel's spaces: boundaries between areas are softened, and functions blend seamlessly. The library doubles as a bar, the café transitions into a lounge, and the wine bar merges with the restaurant. Materials like cedarwood, Japanese stucco, and concrete, paired with bespoke furniture nd calming indigo-dyed curtains, create an atmosphere of tranquility and balance

The lush greenery curated by Yard Works enhances this ambiance by integrating nature into the urban setting. Plants are thoughtfully placed throughout the hotel, transforming it into a green sanctuary amidst the concrete-heavy Nihonbashi district.

"At Hotel K5 traditional Japanese hospitality meets urban Tokyo cool."

BACALAR | MEXICO

Boca de Agua A poetic habitat at the Laguna de Bacalar

The fact that the small town of Bacalar, located on the Yucatán Peninsula, bears the title of "Pueblo Mágico" sounds promising. After all, Mexico's Secretariat for Tourism explicitly awards this distinction to towns that shine with their typical and well-kept character. However, Bacalar's surroundings with their tropical vegetation and the beautiful Laguna de los Siete Colores (Lagoon of the Seven Colors) are also considered "magical.

Designed by renowned Mexican architect Frida Escobedo and hidden in dense greenery, the Boca de Agua fascinates not only with its unusual architecture. That a place was to be created here that would contribute to ecological, social and cultural regeneration and offer visitors an equally regenerative, unique experience is palpable just by looking at it: the 26 accommodations are in tree houses resting on pillars. And what gives guests the extra feeling of virtually floating in the treetops also serves to protect nature. This leaves the ground undeveloped, which in turn reduces the environmental impact.

"At Bacalar, the lake isn't just blue—it's a kaleidoscope of color, where every shade tells its own story. From cerulean to turquoise, the waters shimmer like liquid gemstones, inviting you to slow down and soak it all in."

"Escape the ordinary with spacious and carefully crafted treehouses with all-out attention to detail."

At Sublime Comporta, days drift between salt-kissed breezes, organic gastronomy, and the effortless rhythm of nature’s quiet luxury."

STORY Alentejo and Comporta: A Paradise of Mindfulness and Sustainability

The Alentejo region, one of Portugal's most untouched areas, has been gaining more and more attention in recent years. In particular, the small coastal village of Comporta has become a magnet for travelers seeking the antithesis of mass tourism. Nestled amidst rice fields, pine forests, and endless sandy beaches, a new form of tourism is emerging here—one centered on mindfulness, sustainability, and slow living.

Comporta: The Luxury of Simplicity

Comporta isn’t a place of glitz or extravagance; instead, it embodies a kind of understated luxury that is rooted in simplicity, a deep connection to nature, and authenticity. Visitors come here in search of peace, seclusion, and the opportunity to slow down. Instead of massive hotel complexes or tourist hubs, Comporta offers charming vacation homes surrounded by natural beauty and tranquility.

A key example of this mindful approach is Sublime Comporta, a hotel seamlessly integrated into the serene landscape of cork oaks and pine forests. Sublime Comporta offers its guests an experience that goes far beyond conventional luxury—it is a place where environmental and social responsibility, an indelible gastronomic offer and superior service come together to make this a unique project, just like the region that hosts it.

Sublime Comporta:

A Symbol of Mindful Luxury

Sublime Comporta represents the new wave of luxury that emphasizes sustainability, mindful use of resources, and the beauty of simplicity. The architecture harmonizes with the surrounding landscape: low, minimalist structures

inspired by the traditional fishing huts of the region. Large glass windows open onto the surrounding nature, and the use of natural materials like wood, stone, and clay enhances the feeling of being at one with the environment.

Sustainability is at the heart of the hotel’s philosophy. Much of the energy used at Sublime Comporta comes from solar power, and the concept of locally sourced and organic food is central to the experience. The hotel’s garden supplies vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen, further strengthening the connection between nature, nourishment, and mindfulness.

Sustainability and Slow Living in Comporta

Tourism in the Alentejo region, especially in Comporta, is rooted in sustainability and slow living. Here, "slow living" is not just a buzzword but a way of life. There are no frantic tourist activities in Comporta; instead, visitors can enjoy long walks on the beach, birdwatching, or simply the peaceful stillness of nature.

Many who visit Comporta are seeking an escape from the fast-paced, noisy life of the city. It's about slowing down, appreciating the beauty of nature, and embracing a simpler way of living. Mindfulness plays a central role, whether through a conscious approach to natural resources or in the appreciation of local culture and community.

The Future of Sustainable Tourism in the Region

The development of tourism in Comporta and the wider Alentejo region could serve as a model for other destinations. Rather than focusing on quick mass tourism, the area is promoting a sustainable, slower, and more mindful approach. The challenge lies in maintaining this character as the destination attracts more international attention.

Striking a balance between tourism growth and preserving natural and cultural resources is key. Yet, Comporta shows that it is possible to create a place where luxury, sustainability, and mindfulness coexist, opening a new chapter of tourism—one that is designed not only for the present but for the future.

Connection with nature

Comporta and Sublime Comporta embody the spirit of slow living and mindful tourism. The Alentejo region, with its stunning natural landscapes and focus on sustainability, offers an ideal retreat for travelers seeking to slow down and engage in a respectful relationship with the environment. Here, guests find not only peace and relaxation but also the opportunity to experience a deeper connection with nature and themselves.

Santa Bárbara

Eco Beach Resort

Natural coastal landscape meets modern luxury

Overlooking the grand beach of Santa Barbara, Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort, the Azores’ first ecologically-friendly eco beach resort was opened in 2015. It began with a passion for the natural black beaches along the picturesque northern coast of São Miguel in the Azores. The unique, almost magical, green pastures and mountain hues that contrast with the azure blue oceans are the ideal backdrop for a calming resort retreat. The inviting natural coastal landscape, the elegance of the modern luxury spaces and the commitment to a full-range of experien es epitomizes the passion for the art of hospitality, nature and, above all, the Azores.

The resort is dedicated to sustainability: The architecture and luxury amenities, the Farm-to-Table supply chain, environmental support and energy/water efficiency programs were constituted to reduce the ecological impact, maintain the natural beauty and environmental balance of the coastal ecosystem.

The architectural design and the choice of materials were selected to blend harmoniously with natural surroundings. The minimalist architecture was adjusted to the morphology of the land, in order to minimize its impact on the natural landscape. This was enhanced by the use of natural building materials sourced locally or nationally, such as the islands’ cryptomeria, exotic bamboos and domestic cork that built on the simple natural setting.

Construction of the Santa Bárbara resort prioritized the use of natural materials, primarily the use of local wood (cryptomeria), cork and bamboo, and infused decorative elements that callback to traditional Azorean motifs and accents. Santa Bárbara’s furniture was designed and built exclusively for the resort. Other decorations were made from repurposed materials, such as lamps which were made from oil containers of an abandoned farm, and the restaurant chairs and tables which were made from reused iron and covered with vegetable fiber, using matting crafts.

“Perched above volcanic black sands and framed by lush cliffs, this Azorean retreat offers an ecoconscious escape without compromising on indulgence.”

ARTÀ | SPAIN

Es Racó D’Artà

A destination where you can reconnect with yourself through the Mallorcan way of life

On the edge of the National Park of the Llevant Peninsula near the town of Artà in northeast Mallorca, the proprietors; Jaime Danus, a well-known constructor and Toni Esteva, a famous architect, have created a wellness hotel in a class of its own - Es Racó D’Artà. A retreat full of color and texture, unique smells and tastes, sounds of nature, elegant art and minimalist architecture.

In addition to classic Mallorcan life, Es Racó D’Artà offers a variety of workshops from culinary, agriculture, handicrafts, meditation and yoga. Alone or in a group, guests can explore the surrounding area on foot, by bike, or on horseback. Afterwards, the spa and wellness area with whirlpool and sauna offers the perfect place to unwind.

The old Mallorcan estate from the 13th century is a great project of nature, culture and sustainability. On almost 200 hectares of land, in addition to the hotel complex, there are vineyards, orchards, wheat fields and beehives for its own honey production. A place to connect with oneself and one’s surroundings and to follow new spiritual paths.

The 31 rooms are spread throughout the grounds, some in the main building, some in casitas with private pools. Minimalist design and noble, natural materials characterize the interior and reflect the harmony with nature. Ecological and regional diversity can also be found throughout the grounds - in the hotel’s own restaurant in the form of traditional Mediterranean cuisine.

A Diary entry from the ES RACÓ D’ARTÀ in Mallorca

Bathed in the stillness of the morning, I took a conscious walk from the sublime Es Racó d’Artà up . The cool autumn air, the scent of pine trees mixed with the distant salty hint of the sea and the rustle of leaves under my feet were my constant companions. The stony path required my full attention. I felt my breath, quiet and even, and my steps adapted to the gentle rhythm.

Having arrived at the top, I was rewarded with a view that caused me to pause. The sweeping landscape of Mallorca lay in front of me like a painting, awash with autumn colours. On the horizon was the distant sea. Here, at this point, I sat down to meditate for a short while. The silence was deep and soothing, only broken occasionally by the soft rustle of the leaves in the wind. The sun gently warmed my face while I soaked up the tranquillity. The descent felt like a new beginning.

Back at Es Racó, I enjoyed a small, reviving meal before making my way to an intuitive painting session, where I let the pen glide effortlessly over the paper. Every application of colour became a quiet reflection of my inner landscape, which found its way onto the canvas in the silence. I was inclined towards the muted tones of autumn – terracotta, golden yellow and chestnut brown. How did it look in the end? That’s not important. How did it look to me? Beautiful.

Creatively recharged and liberated, there’s still the Es Racó Spa to close out the day. Doing nothing and feeling everything. This is how you could describe the spa experience. It’s unbelievable how spaces can exude tranquillity: the stone walls, white and beige tones, plants – is this heaven? It felt like being above the clouds, as if I’d been immersed in water and then received a Watsu massage, Zen Shiatsuinspired body work: weightless and free.

What a wonderful idea it was to spend time here during the magical Mallorcan autumn, to bathe in the soft, warm colours, to enjoy the gentle breeze and to be inspired by the season to let go of what no longer serves me and succumb to the magic of transformation.

STORY

Serra Nature

Eco Smart Hotel: An oasis of calm and conviviality, a heartbeat away from the bustling city life of Valencia.

Breathe in the scent of oranges and the sea breeze, enjoy the colourful buildings and colourful paella, visit modern and traditional museums, stroll through El Cabanyal and El Carmen: a trip to Valencia is varied and inspiring. And yet the city can sometimes be too much, like being overwhelmed in daily life. So it’s good when you know places that can help you to reconnect with yourself. Places like Sierra Calderona, a Mediterranean nature park to the north of the city where you’ll find the Serra Nature eco resort. Why not try doing things the other way round –a holiday in the oasis of tranquillity and a brief excursion to Valencia?

Serene

And breathe deeply among the fragrant pines and striking rock formations. There’s no sound, no appointments or other distractions that so often occupy us in everyday life. There’s also no museum, no bar, no markets. At Serra Nature, you’re simply immersed in nature, between the sky and the earth, in your own villa with an infinity pool and a terrace. Just for you. There’s no one to distract you here. In the vastness of the landscape, your soul can follow its own path and be gently guided by the natural sensations. Maybe we need a little of both: stimulation achieved through vivid experiences and stillness to process it all. Perhaps we need a reminder of the stillness every once in a while.

It’s no wonder that Valencia is one of the most popular cities in the world. The Spanish city by the sea is rich in culture and history, has a buzzing food scene and beautiful beaches. It smells of oranges and paella, the old town El Carmen is just as worthy of a visit as the El Cabanyal harbour area, and you’ll face tricky decisions like choosing whether to go to the Museo Fallero or Plaza de Toros. Guests of Serra Nature can explore the diverse city with a professional guide and allow themselves to get swept away by its exuberance, and then refocus entirely on the grounding experience in the breathtaking nature park.

Its approach encompasses local partnerships to reduce its carbon footprint, support local communities and participate in the region’s economy.

An interior passageway follows the hotel’s atypical zigzagging structure and connects the 50 rooms, varying into different categories, from the Valley Guest Room to the Signature Suite. The hotel also encompasses two restaurants, the Brasserie Le Gogant and La Table des Horlogers the gastronomic part, open to everybody. The clients can also an also enjoy a signature cocktail at the Bar des Horlogers.
