WINKLER SPECIAL OLYMPICS The idea of holding The Special Olympics first entered the public mind in 1968 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver held the very first event at Soldier Field in Chicago.

From there, engagement with the idea grew around the world to offer those with disabilities a chance to train, compete, and ultimately have a place to belong in the world of organized sports and recreation.

Sharon Dueck is the head coach of the Winkler Wizzards Special Olympics Club and has seen the tremendous benefits of the organization within the community over the last thirty three years. It’s an opportunity for people with disabilities to enjoy opportunities to have fun, compete, travel and most importantly, have a place to be accepted and build genuine friendships.

The first Special Olympics Club came to Winkler in 1986 through Sharon Dueck and Marlee Wiebe, with help from a group of young adults and high-school students who came together as the first coaches and volunteers.

Sharon worked with special needs students in the school system and had always been passionate about seeing people with disabilities be given opportunities to reach their full potential. One day, when a letter came through the school from the head office of The Special Olympics, she took immediate interest. “I just saw the letterhead and asked if I could read that letter” said Sharon, who was consequently informed about a regional meeting that was coming up. She saw that this was a way to provide those people with disabilities who

are no longer in school a place to participate in recreational activities, as at that time there was nothing designed for them. Sharon and Marlee recruited their friend groups and together started the Special Olympics Club. “The first year was a track and field program and a basic gym program” said Sharon. “Right off the bat we had between thirty to forty athletes sign up” With the dozen coaches who also signed up, the program gained immediate traction and the message was sent that there were many people in the community who were interested. “Since then, we’ve expanded to providing competitive opportunities in Track and Field, Bocce, Basketball, Snowshoeing and Baseball .” More recently, the Club has added Rhythmic Gymnastics within a recreational setting. The school division has provided the club with the Winkler Elementary School gym, along with its gym equipment for the last thirty three years. As a thank-you, the Club participates in a walk-a-thon fundraiser every spring, donating the proceeds to the school’s gym program.

“We’ve had strong community support” said Sharon, as parents of athletes took the initiative in raising funds for the program, along with Gateway Resources and local businesses continually helping out when there was a need. “To this day, if we ever need anything we just need to ask” said Sharon about the continued support the Club has received throughout their history, of which they are incredibly thankful for.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT More clubs would branch off or start in the community following suit including a Ten-Pin Bowling Club, and a Golf program, while other communities who have started clubs include Altona, Carman and Morden with varying sports being offered.

A core group of volunteers has helped lead the Winkler club from the beginning, including Sharon and her husband Don, Connie Driedger and Glenn and Anna Wieler, along with other volunteers, many who have been involved over the last decade. The core group has also passed on this love to their kids, as each of them now have kids of their own involved in helping lead the Club. “I always say that if you come in to volunteer, you should expect to stay a while, as people don’t want to leave” said Sharon, “They really enjoy spending time with our athletes.”

While Covid-19 has put a stop to current activities, they would normally run a gym night on Mondays out of Winkler Elementary School, a place to train for competitions, starting with the regional event, then moving up to provincials, nationals and finally the international stage. While competitions are held each year, there is a summer games held every four

years which serves as the qualifying round to move up to the national games. “We’ve had numerous athletes that have competed nationally and internationally with success.”

For many athletes, the freedom of not having to keep up or fit in with others makes the events extra special, as it is a place where they can simply be themselves, and be celebrated for who they are. “So many times’ we see the parents wiping tears because their kids are being successful” said Sharon “The love at those events is very real.”

The Club is looking forward to meeting again when possible, even if it is only in a casual setting to play Bocce or Baseball in the summer. REBECCA DYCK editor Spring is here...no it’s not… oh, wait, here it comes again! No one is surprised with these Manitoba-like fluctuations, we take it as it comes and just make the best of it. The same can be said about life in general, really, we take it as it comes and cross each bridge as we get to it.

I think a connection can be made between the season of spring and the current world “situation” we are in right now. It feels as though it is a time of “the in-between”, almost as if we are suspended in mid air, anticipating, waiting for the season to change. For many, this time can be really uncomfortable. We wait for rain, and we wait for change, both are needed to move forward but both are beyond our control.

Although it may be out of our control, we are not helpless, there is work to be done in the in-between.

In this season, we prepare for the seasons ahead. If the work isn’t put in now, there will be no crop to harvest. A farmer will relate to this in a very literal sense, but the rest of us can determine what this looks like in our own lives. Whether

that may be our business life, our personal life, or our spiritual life, are we are putting in the work needed to grow, and taking the steps to improve?

Our hearts are still going out to the businesses struggling right now, to say that this is “an uncomfortable time” for them would be an understatement. Let’s continue to rally around them, supporting them in any way we can. Our local businesses are the backbone of our community and without them, we could not flourish.

BUHLER ACTIVE LIVING CENTRE Situated in the heart of Winkler’s downtown, stands the Buhler Active Living Centre, the fulfilment of a dream.

The need for an independent housing complex was necessary within the community. With this need recognized, the Buhler Active Living Centre became a reality. The vision was reached to provide our seniors a place where they could maintain their independence, and develop a sense of community; where relationships thrive, offering everything needed to live a safe and comfortable lifestyle, all in one building.

The purpose was to create a community where relationships are built, and everyday life is shared. At the same time, it means freedom to live in your own home, while receiving the services needed to maintain a sense of purpose and independence.

A group was created in partnership with Manitoba Housing who helped with the cost of construction to keep suites within the building affordable. The goal was to work together with people looking for affordable suites at a lower cost as well as more spacious suites.

The Winkler Senior Centre was the original partner with BALC and offered the land required for the project.

Meetings for the proposed plan were met with positive response from the City and the surrounding communities. After several meetings, it quickly became apparent that the senior community required more than just housing. This is how the Not-for-Profit Buhler Active Living Centre was established. BALC is governed by a board of directors which consists of government, business, and community representation.

Buhler Active Living Centre is a meeting place for senior’s activities in Winker, which involves not only the community of Winkler, but also surrounding areas. This was made possible with the partnership of the Winkler Senior Centre. Walter and Linda Siemens were involved from the beginning of construction in 2014 to when BALC doors opened in June of 2016. With the resignations of Walter and Linda Siemens, Mike Chute was elected as Executive Director. After three and a half years, Mike Chute resigned as Executive Director providing the opportunity for Ryan Hildebrand to become BALC’s current Executive Director.

The second floor of the Buhler Active Living Centre, in partnership with Silver Lining Care, has created a care community known as The Villages. The Buhler Active Living Centre is an independent living community and as an individual ages, the need for more personal care becomes essential. Silver Lining Care provides the essential 24/7 care to residents/tenants who are in need of this continual care. For those wanting more information regarding The Villages, you are able to request a consultation to assess your individual needs.

With the necessary services provided by Silver Lining Care, the move from BALC to The Villages is a smoother transition which allows loved ones to remain in the same building and stay connected.

The Buhler Active Living Centre provides residential suites on floors 3 to 8. A variety of styles and sizes of suites are available to meet your individual needs. They offer spacious open-floor plans which includes the option of one or two-bedroom suites or one-bedroom suites with a den. The suites feature nine-foot ceilings, a complete kitchen, storage room and an individually controlled thermostat. Amenities included are garbage and recycling, meal credits to be used in Café 86, light housekeeping which includes laundry service. Each floor also offers complimentary laundry facilities.

Underground parking is also available if required.

Services such as utilities, insurance, maintenance, key-pad entry access, etc. are included in your monthly rent plan.

Currently, BALC has available one bedroom and one bedroom plus den suites. These suites offer affordable housing options at its finest.

SHOPPING FOR YOUR NEW HOME

The purchase of a new home may be the largest investment you make in your lifetime.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRICE Four areas to consider in determining the right price for you are: • Down Payment Available • Monthly Mortgage Payment • Other Debts • Price Range of Suitable Homes DOWN PAYMENT A minimum of 5% of the purchase price of the home is required.

When a home is purchased with a down payment between 5% and 20% of the purchase price, this is referred to as a NHA Insured Mortgage or a “high ratio” mortgage. Mortgage loan insurance is required for this type of mortgage. A down payment of 20% or more, along with an appraisal, is usually required to qualify for what is called a Conventional Mortgage. Mortgage loan insurance is usually not required with 20% down. Examples of non-traditional sources of a down payment are: Personal loans, lines of credit, credit; any source that is arm’s length to and not tied to the purchase or sale of the property.

MONTHLY MORTGAGE PAYMENT The general rule of thumb is to allow approximately 32% of your gross household monthly income (before deductions) to cover your monthly mortgage payment (including reduction of property taxes, heating costs and 50% of condominium fees).

The 32% guideline is known as the Gross Debt Service (GDS) ratio. (Allowable GDS/TDS may vary based on mortgage type and reviewed on a case by case basis). This calculation will assist you in determining what you can afford.

This 40% guideline is referred to as the Total Debt Service (TDS) ratio.

PRICE RANGE By knowing the amount of your down payment and your maximum payment (taking into account your other monthly payments and the amount of the property taxes), you can determine the maximum price range of homes that you can look at.

WRITING THE OFFER When you make an offer, you should have the full amount of the down payment available as well as a percentage of the purchase price to cover your land transfer tax (typically between 0.5% and 2%). In addition, you will need funds available for legal fees and adjustments for prepaid property taxes, utility bills, etc.

MORTGAGE OPTIONS Open - Gives the borrower the option to repay any amount of the balance owing, at any time, without penalty Fixed - Gives the borrower peace of mind because their mortgage payment and interest rate will remain unchanged for the term chosen. It allows the borrower to repay portions of the mortgage amount through extra payments called “prepayment privileges” without an interest penalty.

Closed - Does not allow extra payments or early repayment.

Interest rates are usually lower on closed mortgages.

Variable - Potential for significant savings of interest costs and improved flexibility. The interest rate varies during term of mortgage.

A capped variable rate mortgage means the payment is fixed based on an agreed rate and term. The interest rate is based on the prime rate and fluctuates with rate changes, however, your payment remains unchanged. The rate cannot exceed a maximum rate which has been agreed upon (the capped rate). The borrower has the advantage of the lower interest rate and the mortgage is paid down sooner as their payment does not reduce.

An adjustable or uncapped variable rate mortgage means that the payment amounts fluctuate in direct correlation with changing interest rates. In both of these products, the borrower, generally, has the option to lock-in to a fixed mortgage at any time.

Home Equity Line of Credit - is a collateral mortgage whereby a line of credit is secured with a property, unlike a conventional mortgage. This is not popular with first time home purchases, but is often used for borrowers who want to use the equity in their home. Sch n e ll I n dustri es The story of Schnell Industries is a perfect example showing how the biggest breakthroughs in life often follow the greatest disappointments. It’s a story of incredible changes in momentum, while following the very relatable journey through the joys and hardships that come from taking a risk and pursuing the dream in your heart.

Fred Dueck founded Schnell Industries with the hope of creating a better life for him and his family through taking his expansive mechanical understanding and answering the call for help when it came knocking. His first working experience came from the oil fields of both Oklahoma and Texas, a job he pursued after he moved with his family from Mexico to Oklahoma. While Fred fell in love with his work, he was willing to lay it down to move to Canada and marry his girlfriend Dolores. For Fred, this meant looking for a new line of work when he moved to Arborg, Manitoba in 1981. He found a job building barges and ferries on Lake Winnipeg, where he would work for the next four years, until the work

started to dry up. During this time, he had begun dreaming of starting his own business in the realm of machining and manufacturing. However, being convinced that Arborg was not the right location for his future business, Fred looked elsewhere to move his growing family, and re-located to the Plum Coulee area.

He found work at local manufacturing companies in Winkler, although the shift-work was not ideal while raising a young family. Throughout the years, he would continually be reminded of his dream to become his own boss, and in 1994, nine years after moving to the Plum Coulee Area, Fred felt ready to leave the security of his position and see what he could accomplish on his own, even if it wasn’t everything he had hoped for in the past.

“My initial vision setting out was only to do repairs for farmers” said Fred, believing that this was the only work that the area could support. He worked out of a rented bay in a building on Peters Street in Plum Coulee, a workspace not much bigger than a single car garage, with a table in the corner for a desk.

Though the small garage lacked size, it more than made up for it in location, which was a real key for getting Fred’s new business off the ground. “We were right between the post office and the coffee shop” explained Fred, as all three locations were in close proximity to each other. “The senior farmers would go to pick up mail and go for coffee. To do this, they would have to walk right by my shop.” On the way, the farmers would stop in and chat with Fred, who they deemed to be a likable guy. With this favourable set up, he received all the free advertising he could have asked for.

The new business was birthed that year under the name Dueck Machining, and with the support of his wife Dolores, Fred’s dream was becoming a reality.

After four months, they hired their first employee, and being equipped with the attitude of never saying no to a job, no matter how small or dirty it seemed, Fred was able to build trust with the farmers in that area. They knew that no matter what hour of night it was, Fred was willing to come on location and do the repairs needed on their equipment, which was especially necessary during harvest season. Fred also recruited the services of a bookkeeper who had worked just down the road, someone who was instrumental in bringing a real business vision to the company while also helping them become organized. Dolores played a crucial role in the company moving forward, as she eventually took over the books and was an insightful business partner besides her responsibilities as a wife and mother of four.

The young company had been built upon a foundation of values that Fred and Dolores were persistent in sticking to, with the unwavering belief that God was the source of their success and that doing business which pleased God was of first priority. This showed up through always looking to go the extra mile for customers and keeping the bills paid and accounts current. The culture of the business was based on the golden rule of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you; a belief that did not leave room for unacceptable behavior or unethical business practices.

Like any successful venture, timely help and some favorable circumstances are usually needed in order to survive and grow. This story is no different. There were many instances that could have gone one way or another, either bringing the young company to its end, or propelling them on to greater things. One such incident came early on when a combine was brought to Fred for repair, only there was no yard or space on which to park it, and it certainly did not fit inside. “I had to work on the street” said Fred, “everything from cutting stuff apart to welding it together.” The town of Plum Coulee was lenient and helped them out by giving Fred permission to do repairs on the street, as long as the machines did not stay there overnight. Not only did this serve as entertainment to those passing by, but it allowed Fred to work on combines and equipment that would otherwise never fit on their small property.

This would go on for three years, until they bought their first shop, a building just down the road that was four times their initial space.

It was at this time that the demand for edible beans had started to take off in Southern Manitoba as a replacement to the sugar beet crop that farmers had depended on for years. This meant that many modifications and new equipment needed to be developed to accommodate the fragile bean crop. In 1998, a local bean farmer approached Fred and asked him

to develop an unloading conveyor for his combine that would not crush or smear the beans like the traditional augers did. Fred had always enjoyed innovation and happily accepted the job of designing and building such a product. The innovative idea caught on and soon many farmers were placing orders for a Schnell unload conveyor. This period was marked with a wave of growth for the family business and would set in motion a true direction and identity for the company, as they now entered the realm of production and product lines. Along with this new step, Fred had gained a reputation for being able to do customized specialty projects for farmers, while continuing to provide the customer service and repairs that he was known for. “I never wanted to go away from local service opportunities” said Fred of their continued support of the local farmers, despite new found success in manufacturing.

The growth that came with their line of conveyors forced the company to move to their third location in 2002, a shop located just across the tracks from their previous building. It was also around this time that another product line was birthed when a farmer came to Fred about a problem he needed solved. He had upgraded to a larger planter, however, the planter was of no use to him yet, as his tractor did not have a hitch compatible with the piece of equipment. The farmer wanted a new hitch built with the mechanisms required to make it more versatile and compatible with his

existing machinery. Again, Fred was up for the challenge and designed a conversion hitch, thinking it was only a one-time project. At that same time they had started to build their website, and needing content to fill it with, Fred uploaded a picture of the new conversion hitch along with a short description.

The first year brought very little interest and after a long period of time with no inquiries about the product, they received a call from Russia, as a farmer had somehow come across their website and was in urgent need of three hitches in fourteen days. He had imported planters from America, only to find out they were not compatible with his tractors, leaving him in a helpless situation with seeding time right around the corner.

Fred and his team were up to the challenge and, “on the fourteenth day, he was driving from the airport to his farm, with his new hitches” said Fred. “This confirmed to us that there must be a demand for this product” said Fred’s daughter Vinita, “our website wasn’t good, and it was almost by fluke that he even found us.” They decided to take their new product seriously and patent and market it. After putting in the effort to get the word out, the hitch has now become their most consistent source of revenue over the years.

I The boom of agricultural conveyor sales had come upon the company quickly in the late nineties, but was starting to wane following their move in 2002, until sales seemed to disappear altogether. A large number of employees had to be laid off as everything had been ramped up for the steep demand. The business had officially fallen on hard times and Fred was in the place of owing money which he could not repay, a reality he was painfully aware of, as every day seemed to go by without a sign of work.

One day, Fred went to visit a business friend of his whom he owed money, now needing to buy more parts on credit. “I told him I was prepared to head out to Alberta to check out the oil field and hopefully bring back work” said Fred, as there was an oil boom going on at the time.

The hope in going would be to bring some work home with him. It just so happened that his friend had recently received an email inquiring about a conveyor to be built for frac sand, a crucial component in the oil industry.

“He pulled up a picture and asked me if I could build it” said Fred. The shop would be just long enough to build the conveyor inside, although he foresaw a problem in getting it out of the narrow building, since the overhead doors were on the side of the building. “I figured even if we had to knock down a wall in order to get it out, we had to take the opportunity” said Fred. While they didn’t need to take out any walls, they did have to coat the floor in dish soap, while lifting up one end with a fork-lift, and skidding the other end towards the opening of the door.

“It was almost like giving birth” said Fred’s son Brenton, who described the great effort it took to get that first conveyor out of the shop. All things considered, this has proven to be the most appropriate metaphor to explain the outcome of that event, as their willingness to go through this difficulty not only saved their company, but propelled them to their highest level yet in the world of business. The door had been opened to building many conveyors like this throughout the oil industry, prompting them to expand their building and enjoy

a time of incredible growth and prosperity like never before. The name of the business was also changed at that time, from Dueck Machining to Schnell Industries Inc, matching the name of the business with the name of their product line. And while some would look at the fortunate timing of events and be tempted to call it a fluke or good luck, Fred and his family are very aware of the role that God has had in their success. “We give God the glory for any success we’ve had” said Fred, as the family has continued to put their faith in God during both the good times and the hardships that have come.

The sudden growth of the company prompted the company to make plans for building a new shop; however, it was becoming more and more clear that there may be some risk involved, as the once roaring oil economy was fading. “We knew that we had all our eggs in one basket” said Brenton, explaining the lucrative contract they had agreed to which had demanded all of their efforts go towards building the frac sand conveyors. The foundation for the new building had already been poured when their work almost completely dried up. “We were facing the question of whether we go ahead and build” said Vinita, as they had laid-off almost everybody and did not have work to justify building their largest building yet. In 2013 it was decided that they had already gone too far in the process to turn back, and continued building their new shop, this time located in the industrial park of Winkler. The state-of-the-art shop would allow them to take on any project, with its high ceilings and built in crane system, as well as more than adequate size at 20,000 square feet.

An added difficulty during this time was the tragic news that Dolores had been diagnosed with ALS, a severe neurological disease, prompting doctors to give her only two more years to live. Fred chose to prioritize time with his wife, and spend some time travelling while health still permitted, leaving Brenton to run the day-to-day affairs of the business. “There were some really tough

I n dustri es years in there” said Vinita, who recalled the exceptionally stretching time for the family, as they fought to keep both Dolores and their business alive. Brenton was forced into the position of leading the company, despite his own admission of having little experience in business management. It was a huge level of commitment for him to learn everything that was required, but with no other options, and his family depending on the success of the business, he drew from his many years of experience at the company and the lessons he learned from his father and did whatever it took to stay afloat. Vinita had been working outside the family business for a few years, but eventually decided to re-join to help ease the load of financial management from her parents’ shoulders.

Slowly the business began to make a comeback.

The goal moving through the difficult years had been simple; create a healthy diversity of work, return to their original product lines and the servicing of local farmers and their machinery, while also being prepared to take on the custom projects that come up. They developed a rail car to truck transloading conveyor, which is used mainly in the frac sand industry but also to move high volumes of other granular products as well. In 2016 they bought Turfmaster, a local company that was building heavy duty lawn sweepers. They rebranded the product as Sweep-All and built up the product line. Today there are units world wide, with the US being the largest market. Selling steel to local farmers and businesses has been another example of diversifying and has become a big part of what Schnell Industries has to offer. This process of refocusing on their original identity has paid off greatly and brought balance into all areas of the business.

Through all the ups and downs, the dedicated team at Schnell Industries has been able to gain tremendous experience in multiple fields of manufacturing, putting them in a position to design and build just about any custom project imaginable through their combined expertise in design, hydraulics, machining, and 3-D printing. In the last few years they have added CNC forming, plate rolling, and robotic welding equipment to

the production floor in order to be able to offer a wider range of services and to accommodate their growing product lines. They also utilize the excellent network of laser cutting shops and powder coating facilities in the area as well as the outstanding work force available, making it possible to be competitive in the industry. “We have large companies coming to us and asking us to help them design and build new concepts. We are big enough to offer a wide range of expertise in manufacturing and design services, but yet small enough to pay attention to detail and get their concepts off the ground quickly,” Brenton says. They also excel at modifying existing equipment, which offers a cheaper alternative to buying something new. “We’ve now had multiple years in a row that have been much more stable” said Brenton. “We still cater to the oilfield industry but we don’t rely solely on it, so we haven’t had the crazy up and down swings of previous years.” This success could not have happened without the excellence and dedication shown by the members of the team at Schnell, all of whom are deserving of recognition.

Today if you walk into the Schnell Industries office you will most likely be greeted by Vinita at the front desk, and she will be able to direct you to the team member who can best help you with your repair job, custom build, or metal purchase. Brenton is busy managing the company, and while other staff are doing most of the customer service these days, he is still happy for a chance to say “hi” and help the customers who are a big part of the Schnell story. Dolores has also continued to pull through, now on year eight since being diagnosed with the terminal disease, and greatly defying the initial expectations for her life. Fred has returned to having a larger role with the company, getting to do what he loves best in designing and prototyping new products, while also preparing his family for the day that he fully hands over the reins. Now, after starting at the very bottom, Fred and his family can look back on their hard work and realize that they really did have a dream worth fighting for.

Here are a few ways you can help your dormant shrubs and trees bounce back after winter.

• Give your plants time in spring to wake up.

Some stay dormant longer and trick people into thinking they are dead when they are not.

• To check if your deciduous trees and shrubs have life in them, scratch the bark starting at the tips and work your way to the trunk/base to see if it is green underneath. If it is green, the plant is still alive, so give it time!

• Anything on the deciduous trees and shrubs that is brown is considered dieback and should be pruned. Dead, damaged and diseased wood should always be removed and be pruned at any time it is seen.

• Pruning will stimulate sap flow and will often force out new growth.

• Do not hesitate to cut a plant back quite far, they will often regrow beautifully. Early spring flowering shrubs, such as lilacs, produce flower buds in the fall and should be pruned once they are finished flowering.

• The lack of rainfall over the last couple of years, and very little snow cover this past winter, may affect how we see our plants perform this spring. Make sure, in the absence of regular and sufficient rainfall, to give all your plants a good soak to replenish the deep moisture they are missing.

• Early spring is a great time to transplant when the plants are still dormant. Once the new growth starts to emerge you want to leave them in place as they are actively growing.

SUPERIOR SEAMLESS EXTERIORS MERGER WITH NCD ROOFING Superior Seamless Exteriors has been providing the Pembina Valley with their premier exterior products since 1986 and have made a commitment to continually improve their services to the communities around them. This last year has brought big and exciting changes to the company as they have moved into their new, expanded location, while also merging with a well known company in the area, NCD Roofing. The partnership has proven to make the two companies stronger together, complimenting each other’s strengths and has produced a more complete overall product and a better customer experience.

In 2006, Bill Fast along with his business partner, decided to start a small construction company together with the initial goal of offering the services of building, renovations and roofing. It didn’t take long for them to realize that trying to do everything

was too much, and decided that they needed to specialize in an area. Focusing on roofing became the logical choice and the young company shifted its focus to a more manageable endeavour. The second year saw Bill and his business partner go separate ways, and with jobs starting to roll in, it left him in desperate need of help. “I had all these jobs lined up for spring, but I didn’t have anybody to work for me” said Bill. One day while out for coffee, Bill asked some acquaintances at the coffee shop if they knew anyone looking for a roofing job. It turned out that one of the men there had a nephew who was looking to get hired on to a roofing crew. Within the hour Bill had hired him. He turned out to be the gift that kept on giving, as he also had a friend who wanted a job, and the three of them were able to keep up with work coming in.

As the season went on, a powerful hail storm would make the company busier than they expected, as claim after claim was made and work became non-stop. “These two guys asked their other friends if they would also come work for us” said Bill, as the second year marked a steep growing period for NCD. “After that year, I never had a problem getting workers” said Bill as the company became a desirable place of employment.

“We were mainly focused on roofing at that time” said Bill, whose goal has always been to offer quality work delivered in as short a time as possible. “A lot of people like our services because we don’t take long to do a project” said Bill, who explained that the more time it takes being up on the roof and walking on the fresh shingles, the more damage it does to the new roof. Bill can thank the constant hail storms of southern Manitoba for his continued growth, as they

brought more and more work each year. “Almost every year our growth had something to do with hail claims” said Bill. After a few years of the company concentrating on roofing, Bill figured out that he would need to expand his services if he wanted to keep getting jobs from hail claims. “When people wanted quotes for a job, they wanted the roofing, eaves troughs, siding and whatever else was damaged to also be done at the same time” said Bill. “If we only wanted to do roofing, they would hire someone else who would do everything.” This propelled NCD to further grow towards being able to complete the whole exterior in order to keep up with the industry.

NCD has also been able to work with many different insurance companies over the years and would become a trusted name when recommending a company to complete the work for a claim.

By 2011, NCD became in need of a permanent home, and were able to find a suitable shop on Cargill Street in Winkler. After a few years they realized that the location was getting too small when they could no longer fit their increasing number of trucks and trailers on the parking lot, and began looking for something that would fit their growing business.

“The old Manitoba Hydro building came up for sale during this time” explained Bill, “we put in a bid and were lucky to get it.” The building was in an ideal location on Manitoba Road, just off of Hi-way 32 on the south side of Winkler and enough size to fit growing demands. The business continued to expand, as they bought more equipment and ramped up their complementing exterior services beyond roofing.

By the year 2020, Bill had come to a fork in the road with regards to future plans for his business. He had gotten to a place where the operation was becoming too big for just him to operate. He was faced with the

decision of either needing to make the jump to the next level of expansion, including hiring more office staff, or sell the business altogether.

“One day I had to hire Superior to do an eaves trough job” said Bill, as his machine wasn’t big enough to handle the job. NCD was no stranger to working in partnership with Superior, especially in the early days of NCD, when part of their initial momentum came from receiving jobs from them. “When I came in to pay the bill, we started talking business, and I told them that I’m in the place of either expanding or looking to sell.” Talk would continue between the two businesses and the decision was made that Superior Seamless Exteriors would take on NCD Roofing, resulting in a win-win situation for both businesses. “The question always on our mind is how to grow in a way that plays to our strengths” said Travis, the owner of Superior. “When we started talking with Bill, it was like a hand in a glove, we knew it was going to work.”

While Superior is used to working with sub-contractors to complete large projects, there are some categories where having their own staff on site to do the work is vital in order to get the job done exactly to the customer’s specifications. “This way we have better customer interaction and a better handle on quality” said Travis, who acknowledges NCD’s reputation for quality work which has been built over the years. The company is also known for their Master Elite Certification with GAF shingles, a premier brand in shingles, allowing them to offer the highest level warranty to their customers. The longevity of any exterior finish hinges on the effort spent preparing your wood surface. Following the tips below will help to ensure the success of your outdoor painting or staining projects.

FUNDAMENTALS OF EXTERIOR FINISHING

For early spring and late fall paint/ stain projects, keep in mind that freezing temperatures may damage your freshly applied paint or stain.

The first week of any freshly applied exterior finish is very vulnerable to the weather elements.

Your wood surfaces should always be dry prior to priming, painting or staining.

Low to the ground wood structures are subject to premature failure of your paint or stain and ultimately wood decay.

When painting or staining in warm temperatures, avoid applying in direct sunlight. You may need to start early or work late to avoid the direct heat of the sun.

Benjamin Moore's oil based stains need to be applied wet on wet meaning you DO NOT allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat. It's best to roll your stain on using a 20mm pile roller onto 2 or 3 boards, then roll on again a second time, then back brush once working the stain into the wood surface. This may require working in small sections and/or with multiple people.

Take note that fog and dew fall can also contribute to damaging freshly applied paints and stains and will also be contributing factors as to when you can begin your project in the morning or how late you can work in the evening.

Always take a look at weather conditions prior to painting or staining. If precipitation is in the forecast, it is best to hold off as rain can damage your freshly applied paint or stain.

When priming exterior wood surfaces it is best to use an oil based primer. Oil based primers offer better adhesion, better stain blocking abilities and deeper penetration.

When painting or priming exterior concrete or brick surfaces it is best to use a water based primer or paint system which offers more breathability and is therefore less prone to peeling.

When applying white or pastel colours of solid colour stain onto raw wood, it is best to prime the surface with Benjamin Moore's 366-00 stain blocking primer to prevent tanin bleed.

When painting stucco it is best to wet down the stucco with water the night before you plan to paint.

This assists in keeping the surface cool and prevents the paint from penetrating too deep into the stucco.

Katie’s Cottage From a young age, Katie was already committed to making a difference in the lives of others.

She was creative and intelligent, someone with a great sense of humour and a big heart. Her passion was to live life to the fullest and knew what it meant to be fully herself, being just fine

with others seeing her as different from the crowd. She was known for befriending kids who were out on the fringes or even seen as outcasts, not caring about reputation or status, but seeing all people as worthy of love and acceptance as her friend.

Katie had always been an active, healthy child, consistently involved with sports and activities. This made her cancer diagnosis at the age of thirteen all the more shocking. “I would have never thought in my wildest dreams that Kaitlyn would have cancer” said Katie’s mother, Ruth Reimer, as there were no signs or cause for suspicion regarding Katie’s health. Katie and her family would experience the fight of their lives following that day, a day that would change their lives forever. Katie initially experienced a seven week hospital stay followed by Chemo therapy. It was during this initial stay that Katie’s eyes were opened to the extreme practical difficulties that came with being sick, realizing that not everything is provided or covered by Medicare, and that there were gaps in the system that could be filled. Then there were the traumatic scenes of children suffering greatly that deeply pulled on her heart. “She saw something so incredibly sad and horrific while in the hospital” said Ruth, “a little girl had been badly beaten, from head to toe and front to back. She said to me and her dad that she wanted to make a difference.”

It was early in her battle with cancer that Katie’s wheels were already turning, and in her mind she was creating ways to give back and help other children who are sick in a tangible way. During her year of Chemo, she managed to go to school and live as normally as possible. That year, Katie was able to speak at multiple elementary schools, sharing her story and how she was currently dealing with it, while encouraging kids to not give up when facing hardships.

After a year of treatment, she was diagnosed cancer free.

Four months later, the cancer came back. “It was angry and came back with a vengeance” said Ruth, describing the aggressive form of cancer that Katie was experiencing.

After her initial diagnosis, Katie started to put plans down on paper for creating a charity called Katie Cares, with the specific goal of supporting children in their medical journey while helping families stay close together during this difficult time by building a respite home where they could stay. She even came up with a slogan for her charity, See It Believe It Achieve It, which came out of her hopeful

and optimistic attitude despite the challenges she was facing.

Katie had a stuffed animal which was greatly important to her throughout her battle with cancer, a stuffed dog which she could always take with her during procedures when her parents couldn’t join her. This was something she wanted to make sure other kids were able to have for their hospital stays. “We promised her we would try to carry out her dreams for Katie Cares” said Ruth, “but at that time we needed to focus on her, and not her charity.”

Katie passed away on May 20 2012, leaving her family and countless friends mourning the loss of a truly unique human being. True to their word, Ruth and Randy, along with family and friends set out to pursue Katie’s dream and attempted to build the charity which she had already created in her heart. “We had zero dollars in the bank for this project” said Ruth, “but during October of 2014, going by faith, we announced our vision for building the cottage publicly.” The year 2015 was a year for creating a plan, writing letters, grants, and approaching potential partners. “It was a very unexpected response” said Ruth, as they raised just shy of seven hundred thousand dollars that year. The money allowed them to build Katie’s Cottage, a respite home for those who have a loved one staying at one of the following facilities: Boundary Trails Health Centre, Eden Mental Health Centre, Salem Home, or Tabor Home. Morden Nurseries heard of the vision and generously donated an acre of land sitting directly across from Boundary Trails.

The cottage was beautifully built by Grandeur Housing, and is now a welcoming place to stay for those who have a loved one in a nearby health centre. Ruth never imagined a place so beautiful and peaceful to offer those who needed a contrast to the disruption of their lives. “I wish I had a picture of every person who has walked through the doors and says, Wow, because it’s not what most people imagine when coming to a respite home.”

Those who come in exhausted have a quiet place to rest and be refreshed by meals, snacks and drinks that are offered.

“Are there tears here? Absolutely,” said Ruth, but we also have really joyful moments as well, such as families who are having a baby born.” While Ruth and her staff do not profess to be counselors, they do have big hearts and are always ready to listen to those who need to talk through the hardships they are being forced to deal with. Ruth and Randy know from experience the difficulties that come with fighting for a loved one’s health and desire to meet every need that they possibly can, hoping to make the journey just a little bit easier.

The 4200 square foot cottage sits on a well kept one acre property, and contains eight rooms which can be rented for $45.20 per night, while day visits to the cottage are completely free of charge. Each room is furnished with two double beds, a mini fridge, wifi, satellite T.V. along with a private bathroom and shower. There is also a wheelchair friendly room and bathroom, along with a donated wheelchair at the cottage for those who need it.

There is a full sized kitchen where continental breakfast is served, and homemade baking and snacks are provided for

the guests. Since opening, they have housed guests from ninety different communities in Canada, with 2019 being a peak year as 947 rooms were rented.

Extreme care is taken to clean each room used by guests, whether they rent a room or just stay for the day. “People should be able to feel very comfortable in coming here” said Ruth, “we have a very clean facility, and follow every protocol that is in place due to Covid.” Parts of the cottage have been transformed into Covid rooms, secluded spaces for people to be alone. There are also spaces outside to enjoy, such as in the gazebo, the pergola covered deck, and other seating spaces to relax on your own.

The gazebo and pergola are examples of the ongoing projects that take place at Katie’s Cottage to better meet the needs of their guests, which is the highest possible priority in operating the respite home. A current project which is almost complete is the installation of a full service coffee bar, stocked with dishes and a microwave oven.

This will give guests more freedom and independence for preparing meals and drinks on their own as the kitchen has been more restricted due to Covid regulations. These

projects are able to be completed through grants that have been afforded to them and through the gifts of generous donors who are recognized throughout the cottage by way of plaques. Katie Cares is operated on the foundational principals of integrity, transparency and honesty, using any money that comes in to continually meet the needs of cottage guests and those staying at health centres.

Katie Cares is able to keep operating through donations and fundraisers and is a registered non-profit organization; as all donations over twenty dollars are eligible for a tax receipt. For Katie’s family, the charity and cottage have been a way to find some closure in losing Katie, as there is a sense of satisfaction from being able to accomplish the many dreams she had of giving back. It’s a way to celebrate Katie’s life, someone who experienced more in her few years than some will experience in a lifetime. And while the hole that she left can never be filled, the cottage has given Ruth something meaningful to pour her life into. “Katie’s Cottage has been my therapy” said Ruth, “I don’t know where I would be today without it.”

For almost twenty years, Koolers has been the trusted name in refrigeration and HVAC services throughout the Pembina Valley and beyond, while their dedication to constantly growing, learning and adding to their repertoire of services has allowed them to take on any job in the industry. Over the years, owners Bruce Ashton and Bill Friesen have worked to instill a team-first mindset that has created a tightly knit group and a working environment where employees enjoy showing up and are able to offer their ideas and experience to those around them. The story of Koolers illustrates how it’s never too late to learn something new, and the value of being a student for life.

Bruce had already been in the refrigeration business for over thirty years when he, along with a few financial partners, saw the opportunity to start something together. They bought out Southern Manitoba Mechanical in Winkler, and got to work servicing industrial refrigerators, air conditioning units and heating systems in the area. Bruce had already built a reputation with past clients which gave him immediate work, and the customer base would grow through word of mouth and referrals from their financial partners. Gaining trust with clients was an important aspect of the job, as they would need to respond to service calls no matter the day or hour of the night, should a breakdown occur.

One of the partners on board with Koolers was D.A. Loewen Electric, who were also able to provide them a space in their own building when the initial garage could no longer house them. Koolers continued to grow, forcing an addition to be made to the side of the building which they currently call home.

While Koolers started out being limited to service and repair work, they would soon expand into installation as well. Growth in the Pembina Valley gave them the opportunity to meet the installation needs of many new or expanding businesses such as grocery stores, restaurants or farms that were in need of greater storage space. The overall push for a better product in agriculture meant higher quality storage, and Koolers was relied upon to offer this. Better air control in factories was also becoming a concern at this time, and the amount of work that was available prompted growth to another level, adding multiple vehicles and employees to the team. “By watching other companies, we learned the principal of never saying no to a job” said Bruce, which gave them confidence to venture out into new found territory and expand their abilities. “DA Loewen continued to help us out, offering man power when we were short in order to get the job done.”

Bill was hired on in 2005 after needing a change from his previous work in farming. “I started out with very little knowledge of how refrigeration or anything mechanical and gas related works” said Bill about the position he was in early on, venturing out completely fresh in the industry. While he didn’t have any experience, Bill was willing and eager to learn and did not mind going back to trade school despite being the

oldest student in his class. “Most people go to trade school in their early twenty’s” said Bill, “I was thirty seven.” At work, he had gifted teachers surrounding him in Bruce, as well as Gary and Daryl Berg from D.A. Loewen who were able to teach him the electrical components of his job. This made all the difference, as Bill learned quickly, enabled to excel under all the guidance and instruction he was receiving, resulting in him performing servicing jobs on his own within a year’s time.

As the company expanded into gas fitting and propane, Bill took the plunge again, going to Class-A Gasfitter School at the age of fifty, certifying him to work on anything related to the Gas Industry. It is this love of learning and improving that has propelled the company forward, as Bruce and Bill along with their team decided to never stop learning. Due to their growing experience in the area, the team has now been asked to help install the largest privately owned propane storage facility in Manitoba.

The culture at Koolers has become one of family that gets along really well together and looks after one another, despite being somewhat unique in that the company is not family owned. With Bruce not having any relatives in the area, the team at Koolers has become his family and he has therefore treated them as such. “We take care of each other, and have each other’s back” said Bruce. This looks like checking in to make sure someone made it home safe from working out of town, or ensuring that people are able to get to appointments or other obligations outside of work.

Every morning starts with a meeting to check on how different jobs are going and any problems that have come up are discussed. “We always discuss problems as a group” said Bruce, as this means no one person needs to carry the weight of issues going on at the job site.

“It’s always a team effort on all aspects of work, from the quotes to the work to the service.”

Two years ago, a conversation started about Bill taking over the company as sole owner, since Bruce was looking to step down. With the added time on his hands, Bruce is excited about pursuing other passions of his such as making use of his pilot’s license and getting in more flying time, while also taking advantage of the summers by getting away for camping. Of course, he will never say no to an invitation to drop in to say hello to his old friends at Koolers and is always willing to lend a hand if needed, or share some experience from his almost fifty years in the industry.“The more you are in the trade, the more you enjoy passing on knowledge and experience to the younger guys” said Bruce, “it’s satisfying to see them excel to where they are better than you are.”

Bruce is more than happy to see Bill take everything he could learn and do exactly that, excel. It is a feel good story of a man who was looking to make a career change later on than most, and ended up becoming the owner and leader of the team that he started out at. “By all accounts I would say that Bill surpassed me” said Bruce, who is fully confident in Bill’s ability to lead Koolers into greater things to come, and continue to serve the community in a way that has gained their trust.

Our residents enjoy the outdoors in summer, just as we all do. It has been many years since the Cottonwood Patio has seen upgrades and it is not the pleasant, peaceful space that it could be. The residents have enjoyed the wheelchair accessible lawn swings that have been placed in the other areas and now we want to place one in the Cottonwood Patio as well. A new concrete pad to replace the old bricks and some trees and other plants will make this an inviting place for residents to enjoy relaxing and reminiscing on the swing. Your donations will bring much happiness to the residents of Cottonwood.

PF Exteriors Ltd. is an exterior construction company and retail supplier, combining years of experience in exterior finishing as well as building construction. Recently, the company has entered into a new era, with a larger building featuring a showroom to walk you through your buying needs.

Leighton Penner is the owner and co-founder of PF Exteriors, and started the business in 2012 with his father, John, and his brother-in-law, Mike. At the time, Leighton was working for a construction company, when he got a seemingly random text from his dad about an eavestrough machine being for sale. “It was out of the blue and I didn’t know why he would think to text that to me, but I could tell he was interested in it” said Leighton, who went along with his dad to have a look. The interest from John would grow and he suggested that his boys buy the machine with him. Leighton and Mike were the ones interested, and the three of them started a side business. As the demand for their work increased, they were forced to decide on the future of their small start up. “We had a choice to make” said Leighton, do we go full time into eavestroughing or do we sell the business?” The decision was made to continue Penn Flow Seamless Eavestroughs, which would grow and branch out into exterior work such as siding, soffit, and fascia. At this point, Mike would sell his shares to focus on his previous work, leaving John and Leighton to continue building the business.

Soon after the eavestrough machine was bought, Leighton left his full time position and launched L.A. Homes, his own building construction company. It was an especially demanding season for Leighton, who credits his wife Ashley for helping him juggle all the responsibilities of starting two companies while also teaching part time and raising a young family. “There was a lot of work she had to put in to make sure I could run the business” said Leighton.

A big shift would happen in 2019, as the family business rebranded as PF Exteriors and made the move towards joining a buying group and becoming a supply and install company. This would allow them to offer a showroom, equipping them to be a retail supplier of

exterior products. Changes would continue over the next year as John would sell his shares, leaving Leighton to continue the family business and run both companies. This prompted an amalgamation under the name PF Exteriors Ltd., while at the same time moving into their new location at 835 Roblin Blvd. East in Winkler. “People can come here and get what they need” said Leighton, “whether it’s a role of tape or we’re helping you decide what kind of shingles you want on your roof.” PF Exteriors offers a variety of products in siding, shingles, metal roofing, soffit and fascia, eavestroughs and garage doors. They also offer specialty products such as Sagiper, often used as a siding accent piece, and even stone. While they may not have the size of other large retail stores, PF Exteriors offers many years of experience to better help customers find the right product for their project, while also offering installation services. “We want to be the first point of contact and offer our knowledge and expertise in the industry” said Leighton, “our desire is to help our clients make the best choice on purchasing products and assist with installing it properly.” This could mean installing the product for the client, or teaching the proper technique and direction for the client to successfully complete the installation on their own. “It all starts with a conversation based on what the client wants” said Leighton, “we listen, show them options, and go on location to measure up their project.” Their goal is to offer a personal, customer centered approach and go a step further than larger suppliers can offer in their customer service. This includes a 3D view of what the product looks like on the house or project, allowing the customer to make a more informed decision.

PF Exteriors is always looking for ways to improve and offer better products and services, with each year bringing a different topic to the forefront. “Developing leaders has been our focus from day one” said Leighton, “we want our employees to be fully prepared and ready for every area of their work.”

Investing in his employees has been very important to Leighton from day one, a practice which has included conferences, seminars and resources to equip his staff to handle the unavoidable challenges that come up. “I always say that that being a leader is not just giving orders at a job site, but also building relationships with employees, clients or suppliers that we are working with.” Both leadership and overall personal development is a major part of the culture and success of PF Exteriors, and is something Leighton desires to continue pursuing. “I saw that I could create a platform for my employees to grow as people, in their faith, and in the industry.” Consequently, the employees have played a huge role in building the company in to what it is today and is an example of what investing in people can do.

This has always been the goal for PF Exteriors, to not simply make a profit, but to impact people along the way. Leighton’s dreams for the company include giving back by offering a positive place to work for people who may be trying to turn their life around and need the extra support and encouragement. “For people going through a rough time,

maybe we are a stop on the way for them to complete their journey.”

While the vision for PF Exteriors is to grow and expand their services to more people, the importance of keeping a small time, personal approach that brought them to where they are today will always be a priority. Leighton wants to thank his Dad, Mike, and past and present employees for being a major part of their success.

WITH BROWN BUTTER LOBSTER MUSHROOMS, CELERIAC & CARROT PURÉE

With so many local cow / calf operations, we truly live in a very blessed land. One of my favorite things to do is take a visit out to farms. I love to ask questions and learn about how they do things. I enjoy the small things, and this lends itself to the local food system as well. Our local farms share a passion with me. A passion for bringing quality food to our dinner tables. Working closely with local farms has been an excellent learning experience for myself and I highly encourage you to get engaged with the local food system if you have an opportunity. Learning about how it works, where the food comes from, what they do and how they do it is a great start in the shift towards a reimaged food system as a whole.

For this recipe I have included several local components including the wild Canadian Lobster mushroom . In my opinion it is one of the Cadillacs of the foragable foods.

Foraging takes some "know how" and experience. This is where businesses like Wildland Foods come in. They are a specialty food business with a mission to bring the unique flavours of the Canadian forests to your table using the most ethical and sustainable harvesting methods.

‘ C EL ERIAC PUREE INGREDIENTS :

METHOD:

1 celery root - peeled and given a rough chop 3 cloves of garlic - minced 1/2 yellow onion - diced 3 c chicken broth 1/4 c butter 1/4 c cream 2 tbsp white cooking wine juice of 1 lemon 1 tsp dried thyme or 2 tsp fresh leaves salt & pepper

1) Bring chicken broth to a slight boil and add the celery root (cook until tender to the fork) 2) Meanwhile In a separate saucepan melt and brown the butter over medium heat.

3) Add in the onions and saute until translucent 4) Add in the garlic 5) Season with salt / pepper and the thyme. Stir 6) Add in the white cooking wine and lemon juice and reduce heat to low.

7) Once the celery root is tender, strain and add to the second saucepan.

8) Now transfer it all into a blender or vitamix.

9) Add the cream and pulse.

10) Blend until smooth. It should be a nice smooth, silky purée with no clumps.

CARROT ‘ P UREE INGREDIENTS : 6 medium sized carrots - rough chop 1/2 yellow onion - diced 2 c water 1 head of garlic 1/4 c butter 1/4 c cream 2 tbsp b. sugar 1 tsp olive oil dash of cinnamon salt and pepper

METHOD: (pre- heat oven to 400 F ) 1) Peel some of the garlic. Just the outer layers.

2) Cut off the top 1/2 “ to expose the cloves 3) Drizzle with olive oil and wrap in aluminum foil 4) Transfer to a baking sheet and place in the oven for 30-40 minutes 5) Meanwhile get a pot of water boiling.

6) Add the carrots and onions.

7) Boil until carrots are tender to the fork.

8) Strain.

9) Once the garlic is done, remove from the oven and let cool slightly.

10) Remove the cloves from the peel. They should just squeeze out.

11) Add the carrots , onions and garlic into a blender.

12) Add the butter, cream, sugar, cinnamon and blend until smooth. ( add a touch more cream if the purée is thicker than you like).

STEAK & BROWN BUTTER LOBSTER MUSHROOMS

INGREDIENTS : 1 beef filet mignon 1/4 c dried lobster mushrooms 1/4 c butter 2 tbsp canola oil salt and pepper a pinch of dried thyme METHOD:

(rehydrate mushrooms for 15-20 minutes in hot water. reserve the liquid for use as a soup base or an addition to sauces for an earthy element)

1) Heat canola oil over medium - high heat in a frying pan or cast iron pan.

2) Rinse and pat dry the steak . Season the steak with salt and pepper (liberally) 3) Place the steak in the hot oil. (do not use olive oil here. It burns a lot quicker than canola oil) 4) I like my steaks medium rare, so I will only cook them for a few minutes on either side.

5) After a couple minutes, flip the steak and repeat. (You’re looking for a nice brown crust and you need some higher temperatures to achieve this.

The surface of the meat must also be dry.)

6) Reduce heat and add the butter slightly before you are ready to remove the steak. The butter will melt quickly. Spoon it over the meat repeatedly.

7) Sprinkle some dried thyme over the meat and remove when you are satisfied with the doneness of the steak . Because I like my steak pink - red, my beef is done here, but if you want a more medium steak, transfer the meat to an oven safe pan and place in the oven already set to 400 F for a few minutes. Remove from the oven and set the steak on a cutting board to rest for 10 minutes (Steak must rest before slicing. Feel free to tent the steak a bit).

8) Return the original pan to low heat on the stove top. At this point your butter will be browned off , but not burnt. Turn the heat down slightly so as to not burn the butter.

9) Add your rehydrated mushrooms to the brown butter and cook on low for a couple minutes.

10) Remove from heat.

Have fun with your plating. Spoon out a nice layer of celeriac purée and place the steak over top of it. Now you can have some creative freedom with the carrot purée. I used a piping bag in the picture, but feel free to just lay it on the plate. Top the steak with the brown butter mushrooms and serve. The purées can be done ahead of time and reheated when you are ready to serve.

You should have plenty of extra purée for later use.

Growing up, Ed was naturally curious about the elements of a constructed home. “I built my own room when I was thirteen years old” said Ed, who, in his eagerness to build something, decided that his own room was the perfect opportunity to satisfy this hunger for a creative project.

“As a kid, I was always looking for things to build, whether it was a tree house, a fort, or bridge across the creek” said Ed, who has never been afraid to tackle a project since. This led to a high school job at the local lumber yard where Ed was able to familiarize himself with building products and tools, seeing where they go, how they work and what everything was used for. “It was in 1993 that I got my start working at Canadian Lumber” said Ed, “I was able to work with trades people and started learning the ins and outs of the industry from them.”

A couple of years later he joined his first construction crew and instantly knew that this was what he was created to do. “I really enjoyed being outside and seeing things progress and be built” said Ed, who explains he always needs to be busy doing stuff with his hands. After several years of working for different building companies, Ed invested in further education to become a certified Journeyman Carpenter, and completed his apprenticeship in 2002. While he had the goal of one day setting out on his own, the journey to that moment came a lot quicker than he expected. “In 2004 I built my own home, most of it during evenings and weekends, and I kept having people stop in at my house with house plans asking if I could build them a house. And I would always have to say no.” These offers would plant a seed in Ed that would continue to grow. In the fall of that year, Ed was approached by his Level 1 building

instructor - who was the project supervisor at the Real Canadian Superstore being built in Winkler - to join their construction team. He saw this as good opportunity to take a short term job and make a plan to start out on his own. “My intentions were to work alone, doing renovations and small projects,” said Ed. However, Ed’s original intentions quickly turned into much more than he anticipated when he was contacted by a home builder in the area. “A turning point right off the start was when Burt Warms asked me to build homes for him in my first years starting out” said Ed. Burt was a well respected home builder who was known for building high-end houses, always with a strong focus on detail and quality.

The transition was a challenging one. Ed was now learning the new roles of overseer and teacher that came with being his own boss. At the end of the year, it was their commitment to working hard and doing the little things right which set the tone for Ed’s construction start up and would give him the momentum he needed. Over the span of that year, Ed and a team of rookie builders that he assembled, were able to finish eleven homes, a remarkable feat which gained the attention of the community.

“People recognized what we could do and it took off” said Ed.

This was on top of raising their two young children, which forced her to be creative in finding time to complete all the necessary bookwork. Mel stayed home with the kids which meant a lot of the work had to be shuffled around. Most of the book work happened during nap time or in the evenings. During those early years it would take an unwavering joint effort from both Ed and Mel to make the business work.

While Ed Penner Construction achieved their start through building high-end, custom homes, they were also founded on the ability to be diverse in their work, and were willing to take on a variety of projects that became available. By 2007 they had ventured into commercial work, and were renting a shop on Commander Drive in Winkler in order to store their growing list of equipment. “Our commercial work was growing at that time, and I started to see a hole in the community” said Ed. “A lot of companies can put up these smaller wood frame shops that you see in the industrial park, but these medium sized construction projects would often bring in companies from outside of town to build them.” Ed saw an opening in the market, a need which he was very interested in filling.

In 2010, Ed got his first opportunity to build a commercial steel building when Nu Steel approached him about putting up a building for them. The job went well, and left them with decisions to make about their future. Up until that point, EPC was fairly balanced in the jobs they took, half their efforts going towards building homes, and the other half focused on commercial. “I had spent fifteen years building houses” said Ed, “but it became clear that we had to make a decision on which direction we were going to go. It came down to either staying in our comfort zone of building homes or taking the leap entirely into the commercial market and focusing all our energy and resources there”. The continued growth and change of direction meant a large investment in equipment to make the leap.

“Personally, there has been a huge amount of dedication made to be able to do the jobs that we are doing” said Ed, who needed to buy more scissor lifts, telehandlers, trucks and overall bigger equipment to keep up with the size of projects they were hoping to build. They also needed to build their own shop at this point in order to have room for their growing fleet of equipment.

“One of the big jobs that put a statement out to the community was Sun Valley Tire” said Ed, “it was us showing the community that this is what we can do and what we are capable of.” EPC ran the whole project, taking their eye for detail, gained from building houses and applying it to their bigger projects. “We still drop a gridline for every building and know exactly where everything goes, down to the sixteenth of an inch” said Ed. “If something’s off by a quarter inch on a 450 foot building, we will get out the cutting torch and move it to where it’s supposed to be.” Since then, they have taken on other significant steel frame projects such as VBs Entertainment Center and the ICON Technologies building, with the considerable size of 105,000 square feet. “I’ve been asked how it is that we manage to build projects this large” said Ed, “I say it’s like a marathon, whether you are walking one mile or twenty six, you still have to take the same steps; there are just more of them.”

2017 would bring another season of transition for EPC, as they entered the agricultural market this time, putting up potato storage buildings for local farmers. Again, this took more commitment and a sizable investment to buy all the specific equipment needed to put up the large, arch shaped buildings used for storage. The investment has proved to be worth it as they continue to put up more buildings every season and see continual growth in the market. A key part of expanding the business has been hiring and training the right staff, people who share Ed’s passion for quality buildings.

Currently, EPC has eight journeyman carpenters on staff and are continually training and re-training their staff to be able to do the best work possible. The high level of experience on the team has allowed them to keep a level of variety in their work, as they still take on very diverse projects. From small to large jobs, wood or steel framed, they have the ability to build almost anything or renovate existing buildings.

After seventeen years, EPC is still a small company that is able to do big jobs. “Our goal has never been to be the biggest” said Ed, “but we have always wanted to be one of the best.” This focus has shown up in the way they do business, as EPC has always preferred to build what they sell over hiring sub-contractors to do the work for them. “Our hands are always on the project in some form” said Ed, “we’re putting in the screws and nails our self.” This commitment allows them to stay on top of the quality of work being done, and ensure the customer gets the very best. “We have to have a customer base that will trust us and our abilities” said Ed, who has spent his career working to build a business and reputation that customers can rely on. “We love being able to serve the area that we live in” said Ed, “it’s very important to us that we are able to do this.”

Looking back to the beginning, Ed’s career has grown into something he was not expecting. “It is way more than I thought” said Ed, who was content with simply making it on his own as a carpenter. All of the risks, investments, and hard work have made EPC what it is today. They are able to look back and see and appreciate the projects that they have been a part of, as a result of a growing successful business community. Each building will stand as reminder of what Ed and Mel and a dedicated group of employees have achieved together. Growth does not come without challenges along the way, but the future looks promising for Ed Penner Construction, whose goals are simply to keep doing what they love, providing a meaningful service for the community by constructing high quality buildings.

Using a toonie as a tread depth gauge is a simple way to do it.

Be sure to check all four tires in the exact same way and over multiple areas on the tire. First, take your toonie and check every single tire by placing the coin in a tread. If the tread reaches the paws of the bear, your tires are in great shape and most likely near new. If the tread covers all the silver part, it’s about half worn. Finally, if the tread is covering half of the letters, it’s time to start shopping.

At the mention of the term “physiotherapy”, what is the first image that comes to your mind? Maybe the term conjures thoughts of people engaging in exercise?

Perhaps it crafts images of individuals plagued with complaints looking for pain management?

Indisputably, physiotherapy is in the front-line answer to these physical health scenarios. However, what may be not so generally known is the benefits of physiotherapy in the realm of mental health.

The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being1. But the relationship between mental health and physical health is often misunderstood. The disconnection between “mind” and “body” creates the misconception that mental health is not connected with physical ailments and on the flip side, that a physical disease is not connected with mental health related symptoms. The reality is that both are intricately woven.

An investigation of published statistics validates this statement. In fact: • Canadians who report symptoms of depression also report experiencing three times as many chronic physical conditions as the general population.2 • Canadians with chronic physical conditions have twice the likelihood of also experiencing a mood or anxiety disorder when compared to those without a chronic physical condition.3 • One out of every two Canadians with major depression and a co-existing chronic physical condition report limitation in their day-to-day activities.4 So, if the relationship exists – what role does physiotherapy play?

PHYSIOTHERAPY ENCOURAGES MOVEMENT. Studies have shown that people with diminished mental health are more susceptible to inactivity and are at risk of a sedentary lifestyle. Additionally, prescribed medications to treat different mental health conditions can have side effects which result in the development of metabolic syndrome, obesity, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease5.

Engagement in movement can help reduce these effects!

With physiotherapy being a profession rooted in the encouragement of activity – it is a brilliant fit!

PHYSIOTHERAPY CAN ASSIST IN THE REDUCTION OF PAIN. Researchers once thought pain, anxiety and depression resulted from psychological rather than biological factors.

The experience of pain is depressing and likewise depression may feel physically painful. But researchers have learned more about how the brain works and how the nervous system interacts with other parts of the body. They have discovered that pain shares some common biological mechanisms with anxiety and depression. The positive news is physiotherapy can greatly reduce or eliminate physical pain, which in turn can decrease emotional duress.

PHYSIOTHERAPY CAN INCREASE CONFIDENCE AND SELF ESTEEM. Low self-confidence is often closely tied to reduced mental health. Therefore, building this is crucial. Physiotherapists can assist by creating plans that set achievable goals, helping and encouraging the reaching of these goals and aiding in seeing results. The research has shown that this formula has been proven to boost morale and self-esteem!

As outlined above, physiotherapy can be used as an integral part of a healthcare plan designed to heal the whole person.

Clorissa

She grew up hearing that she would become a tattoo artist. It became a running joke that followed Clorissa after she constantly found herself filling up her friend’s arms with pictures and artwork during breaks at school or throughout time at summer camp. Fast forward a couple of decades, which included her becoming a wife and a mom of two kids, and the fate spoken over Clorissa turned out to be accurate, as she is now the proud owner of Body Art by Clorissa Penner. Here, she provides a variety of services, including Tattoos, Piercings, Permanent Makeup, Micropigmentation and Paramedic Micropigmentation. These are performed in a clean and welcoming environment, which helps clients relax and enjoy the creative experience.

While she has always been artistic, becoming a tattoo artist was never a serious thought for the longest time. It wasn’t until a local tattoo artist, a friend of a friend, offered to take Clorissa under his wing and give her an opportunity to learn the trade and test out her abilities. It all looked really promising, until after six months when he would move away, taking her opportunity with him.

It was sometime later, while at home after the birth of her second child, that Clorissa began to intentionally decide on what she wanted her future to look like.

“I started to stir the pot on the idea of either going back to school for something or taking some courses to get out of the regular nine to five.” She followed her

passions and became certified in Permanent Makeup, Micropigmentation and Body Piercing, with the hope to be her own boss in the industry. “It just so happened that as I was doing this, an old classmate of mine was starting up a space for her business, and was looking for renters” said Clorissa. She was able to get a spot right away at Nikki’s Beauty Bar and built up a clientele quite quickly through referrals and support from Nikki and her community at the salon.

After a few months of working under a commission based agreement, Clorissa felt ready to commit to operating her own business within the salon. “With each service completed I felt more and more comfortable and confident” said Clorissa on the process of building her business and developing her own identity as a body artist. “It also helps having a graphic designer as a husband” she said, as Clorissa and Ed run the business as a team, with him taking the lead in social media, photography and helping with other components related to the business side of things.

The start-up date was set for January 2020, with all the preparation and hard work culminating to fulfill her dream. While everything appeared to be right on track, incredible adversity would immediately hit their infant business when Covid 19 forced her to shut it down completely. “This was not the typical business start-up” said Clorissa, “we faced difficulties that

even well established businesses struggled to navigate.”

It was an incredibly unnerving time, hoping and waiting for even a glimmer of good news that might give them clarity about their future. “It was a time of constant questioning” said Clorissa, “will people even have money to spend on luxuries or will I just have to quit?” After lots of questioning and pursuing creative ways to keep her business alive, they got the green light they had been waiting for. “When we finally re-opened, it was exactly the opposite of what I was afraid of” as she booked up immediately and saw the support of her community like never before.

Building this trust has been an incredibly rewarding and exciting journey, involving the development of further technique and doing the research to keep honing her craft. This includes a mentorship under her own personal tattoo artist which has proven to be incredibly helpful.

Social Media was able to play a huge role in bringing in clients, as the business has been able to showcase their greater focus on piercings and tattoos. “I think the tattooing part has really shined lately” said Clorissa who has continually grown in confidence and skill while gaining the trust of clients, many who have come back for additional projects. “I focus on black and shading, while also having a real attraction to thin lines and delicate work such as floral and script” said Clorissa, with memorials and family representation also being very popular. “It definitely makes a person emotional” said Clorissa about her work, “it’s amazing how from start to finish, you really get to know a client.” The story behind a project is always intertwined with the piece of art, and the relationship that is created helps to add depth and

Paramedic Micropigmentation has become somewhat of a passion project for Clorissa after seeing people in her life go through cancer treatments. It is an amazing way to help people feel good about themselves and rebuild self-confidence by either camouflaging scars, blending skin spots caused by Vitiligo or helping to restore the appearance of breasts that have been operated on.

Work can also be done on the scalp to make thinning hair appear fuller and thicker and give balding heads the appearance of having a shaved haircut.

One of the more important reasons for visiting a certified body artist is the peace of mind in knowing that the environment and equipment being used is safe and sterile. One of the main areas it is noticed and appreciated is in Body Piercing, where the use of a hollow needle is much safer than a piercing gun. “Piercing guns use blunt force to push the jewelry through the ear” explains Clorissa, “this makes jagged edges in the ear and creates a place for bacteria to accumulate.” The method also takes longer to heal, making it overall more susceptible to infection, especially considering the piercing gun is not able to be sterilized. The hollow needle used by professionals is discarded after each use and creates space for the jewelry to sit. This method results in smooth edges in the skin and an overall quicker healing time.

Clorissa’s journey to becoming a body artist and business owner may look different than some and has definitely had its challenges; but it is one that she has no regrets taking and has come to absolutely love the career she has pursued. “I love that my job is consistently inconsistent” she said in describing her day to day work, which is made up of a variety of projects with every day being different from the previous. “The number one thing about my job is getting to know my clients and building relationships with them” said Clorissa, “being able to hear the stories behind the artwork and build connections is the most important thing for me.”

It took a final leap of faith in the face of fear and second guessing to go back to school and then again to create her own business. The Minnewasta Golf and Country Club is located in Morden, Manitoba on the edge of the beautiful Pembina escarpment. The CFDC is home to thousands of marine fossil specimens representing more than 20,000 fossils, including Bruce, the Guinness Records holder as the largest exhibited Mosasaur in the world! In 1974 Bruce was discovered north of Thornhill within the Pembina Member of the Pierre Shale Formation. A summer is not complete without a selfie with Bruce!

Henry Siemens publisher I really wish we could write a Last Word about our covid experience and move on with celebrating everything that this magazine is about. Instead we’re again talking about new public health orders and tightening restrictions and more uncertainty.

I can think of a few Last Words to describe the past fourteen months. how about WEARINESS? Everything is different and everything has to be re-learned in a whole new context. Businesses are slow (or closed) when they should be busy and busy when it’s normally slow. Nothing is as it was and that reality can be very tiring when you go through it every single day. or SCARED? Many people are scared of getting covid, others are scared of the vaccine, or scared of the third wave, or scared of losing their freedoms. There is so much to be scared about that, unless we’re solidly grounded, we literally become scared of everything. or GRACE? We have to remember that when this is over we will have to live and work with each other again. If all we have done is show frustration and anger with those who don’t think like we do, we won’t have easy relationships.

Whether we agree or not, we have to find grace for the other viewpoint. The greatest tragedy of all would be if we allow covid to tear apart our communities.

LAST WORD or UNDERSTANDING? We will never learn more than when we earnestly engage in respectful dialogue with someone we strongly disagree with. or OPTIMISM? As I talk to business and community leaders the most consistent message I get is a sense of optimism.

Customers, suppliers and staff have made tremendous sacrifices as they’ve made it this far.

From here, the skies look brighter ahead. Like the feeling you get when the sun peeks out of the clouds after a dark storm there is hope and optimism that better days are ahead. that leads me to FAITH. I believe that’s the best Last Word to describe where we are right now.

We need to dig deep and find the courage to step forward in faith. People build houses in the faith that they will have a job to make the mortgage payment. Farmers have faith that they can put seeds into dry soil, that the rain will come and they will harvest a crop. Businesses hire employees, make investments in equipment and technology in the faith that the sales will be there to pay for it all. Nothing happens without faith and we continue to need a whole bunch of it as we strive to get through this.
