Cracked, Warped or Rotting Siding

These may be the most obvious signs that your siding is damaged beyond repair. Walk around your home for a thorough visual inspection.

Even small cracks could point to larger problem.

Poke around. Is the layer beneath solid, or does it give way if you touch it? If there’s more rot beneath the cracked or warped portions of your siding, it might be time to call in a professional.

Severly Faded Siding

When siding loses its color and becomes severely faded, this is a sure sign that its weatherproofing is on its last leg. This doesn’t mean your siding is suddenly useless, but it’s definitely a good time to consider upgrading your siding before more serious problems occur.

Insulation Issues

Is your home feeling draftier than it used to?

Are your energy bills skyrocketing? This can be a sign of underperforming siding. Check to see if you notice drafts near exterior walls, especially around electrical receptacles and windows. Feeling cold air sneak in? It may be time to replace your siding and upgrade with a layer of Styrofoam insulation.

Fungus, Mold or Mildew

Be wary of fungus, mold or other kinds of growth that appear on your siding, particularly near the seams. These kinds of substances grow wherever moisture is available, which means that their presence could indicate that water is penetrating your siding. While not all instances of fungus are cause for alarm, they’re certainly worth further investigation.

Paint Peeling Inside Your Home

Judy Derkson Better late than never, right? Our aim was to have this issue in your mailbox by the end of April, but as we know, things don’t always go as planned. Like so many other businesses in our area, we were delayed by supply chain issues. It’s hard to print a magazine when you don’t have any paper to print it on!

Thankfully, everything lined up and we were able to produce issue nine of Life in the Valley.

As the world tries to straighten itself out, we’re all trying to figure out how to do what we’ve always done. Often with a little less ease and a few more curveballs, we find ways to run our businesses, live our lives, and enjoy the time in-between. A reassuring sign of our community “bouncing back” is the number of new businesses we’ve seen popping up.

It’s great to see people putting down roots in the Pembina Valley, knowing that they see value in earning their livelihood here.

Summer was supposed to be our long-awaited distraction. A time to

get away, take our holiday time and unplug for a little while, but the rising gas prices really put a damper on that. Maybe a road trip doesn’t look quite as appealing now that you know what it’s going to cost every time you pull up to the pump. Hopefully that doesn’t stop you from taking a welldeserved break, even if that means Morden beach will be the furthest you’ll be driving. Something I am looking forward to is finally being able to attend our festivals! Summer isn’t quite the same without them.

Our winter felt particularly long this last year so I am planning on making use of every sunny day I can. I am one of those crazy people who would wish for +30 temps from June, straight through to September, I’ll also be wishing for a rainstorm here and there to keep the farmers happy.

Whatever you end up doing this season, I hope you have the chance to get out and do something you enjoy.

“O

ften, we just get stuck, and we need someone to help us move forward again,” says Paul Penner. After over 25 years as a counsellor at Pembina Counselling Centre (PCC), he’s seen the profound and lasting effect that professional help can have.

“When there’s anxiety or depression, or relationship issues, people usually try to help themselves.

But it can become overwhelming; they’re looking for hope. And that’s where we come in.”

PCC exists to help individuals who are struggling personally or in relationships, to gain direction and find lasting hope.

The not-for-profit organization began in 1993, with a vision to provide affordable, valuesbased counselling for

individuals across the Pembina Valley. They wanted to provide support that wasn’t funded by the government, so they could stay true to their Christian values and hold themselves accountable. The community supported this vision and definitely saw the need for this kind of service.

Paul joined the PCC team in 1997.

Along with a Master’s degree in counselling, he brought to the table 11 years of experience at a community outpatient centre in Ontario.

“Judy Heide and I were the counselling staff then, working out of a small office at the Buhler Active Living Centre,” he recalls.

“PCC was only four years old at the time and had been run by a steering committee. The newly formed board wanted an executive director as well as a counsellor, so that’s kind of where I came in.”

With 343 kept appointments that first year, the need for more space and staff soon became evident. The following year, they moved to an

area further down the hall, which offered larger offices and a more separated reception area and waiting room. “And with that space, we added more counsellors, too. Things were evolving. We were growing,” Paul says.

The areas of practice began to expand, as well. “Initially, it was much more general counselling, and specialties weren’t really established.

But we were reaching more and more people with problems they didn’t know how to resolve. They sought us out. We were building credibility in the community. We wanted them to get to know us and wanted feedback, too, to know if it was a good experience for them. It’s been a gradual growth ever since.”

In 2018, the centre moved to its current location, in the former Morden Hospital building on Stephen St. “We had five staff members at the time, and because we were sharing three offices at the Buhler facility, we couldn’t book as many appointments as we wanted to. It was limiting us, and it was time to expand. We had adequate funding to finish what we started, this was a great fit for us, and the community was totally on board with the move.”

With four counselling offices, the new space is quite adequate. Paul says they have paid special attention to how the new space is decorated and furnished.

“We want people to feel peace and serenity when they come here. We chose warm colours and artwork depicting peaceful settings. We want to avoid a clinical feel. We have big, comfortable armchairs, and we’ve

even been deliberate about the background music. It all adds to the ambience - a peaceful and private, relaxing, welcoming environment where they can feel safe and at home. I truly believe our clients sense joy when they come here.

There’s no intensity. There’s ease.

This is their space.”

In 2019, PCC moved their Winkler branch into a new space with two more offices. And more recently, they opened another office in Altona.

I want people to know there really is help and life can be normal again.

“It’s been a desire for us for a while to have an office in Altona. After all, we are the Pembina Counselling Centre, so we want to serve the whole Pembina Valley at large. We were already getting many clients from Altona, so we wanted to serve them in Altona,” says PCC Executive Director Chris Derksen.

“We’re hoping to expand our space and presence there, and we’re looking to get a female counsellor going to Altona, as well.”

Today, PCC employs 13 staff members: six counsellors, three administrators, two part-time receptionists, a bookkeeper, along with an executive director.

The centre supports clients from communities across the Pembina Valley and the South Central region,

including people from Winnipeg, Morris, Portage la Prairie and Killarney.

Their team of experienced, Master’s-level counsellors support their clients through a number of areas of practice, including marriage counselling (joint and individual), anxiety, depression, anger management, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), abuse, stress, parenting, counselling for teens and children, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), phobia, and attachment disorders.

“We have two male counsellors and four female counsellors, whose services cover everything from anxiety and depression issues to relationship struggles or parenting concerns. We want people to feel comfortable with whoever they identify to join them on their journey. So, we ask people if they have a preference. We encourage them to go to our website and read their bios and find the one that is right for them,” Paul says.

Paul is a relationship counsellor and also dedicates one day a week to people dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. “I have specialty training in that area. I want people to know there really is help and life can be normal again. I’ve worked with a lot of people. It’s a good thing to get help. Sometimes people feel stuck because it can replay for years.

And then I would say come and see me.”

Chris took on the executive director role in December 2019.

Along with university and college training in marketing and business, he has years of experience in paraministry, from managing summer camps at Calvary Temple, to nearly 10 years of walking alongside those struggling with addictions at Adult and Teen Challenge.

“It was providential. I had just finished with Adult and Teen Challenge in August 2019 and was considering counselling. I called Paul. He told me he was stepping down from the executive director position. He told me about the job and said the word ‘fundraising’.

I said, ‘I can help with that!’ So I applied and here I am.”

Originally from Winnipeg, Chris married Lois who grew up in the Pembina Valley and feels right at home in the community. His first impression of PCC could not have been more positive. “What I saw was a fantastic team, from the counsellors to the administrators.

People see the comradery and the joy that we have coming to work. It’s a team, and there’s a level of support here that is rare to find.”

Chris is also impressed with the PCC board of directors. “We’re community based. We have a community board. And we have a good board. Our working relationships from the top to the bottom have been very positive and we’re grateful for that. It’s made up of community members and businesses who do all they can to support this organization.”

As a charitable organization, one of their mandates is to make counselling affordable to everyone.

“Our model is 50 percent of our income comes through client fees, so those are the people who can pay and people who have insurance and so forth. The rest of the money comes from grants and donations from local businesses, organizations, and individuals. What that allows us to do is charge on a sliding fee scale.

So, we have a conversation with the client. If they need assistance, we work together and narrow it down to a price they can afford. We don’t want the cost to be a factor in whether someone gets help or not.

Counselling can be expensive. Not everyone is in a situation where they can afford it.”

We can ally with anybody that has outcomes they value in life, that don’t hurt them or others.

He adds, “We are so grateful for the generosity of the communities across the Pembina Valley. We would not exist without their support. But thanks to them, we’ve been able to expand and grow our ministry to continue to serve, and also serve more.”

The majority of their clients are referrals from other organizations, including corporate, government and other ministries. “They are our friends. We’re not in competition with anyone. It’s all-hands-on-deck.

We’re all doing good work here and we love them and bless them.

There’s more than enough work to do and we’re just doing what we’re called to do.”

Just months after Chris joined the team, the pandemic hit. Pembina Counselling Centre was deemed an essential service, so their offices remained open. “Counselling is an

intimate service, so by and large, people still wanted to be here. They wanted face to face meetings.

So, we sanitized and followed all the protocols. And for those who preferred, we provided phone and video counselling by request,” Chris says.

They also facilitated workshops with small groups so they could voice their concerns and interact with each other in a controlled setting.

“We encouraged them to share their stories and gave them homework to do every week. It became quite a hit, and we felt it was very important work. Through the last few years, there have been a wide range of emotions from fear, anger and anxiety, to pain, loneliness and loss.

Now I feel our mission is to help heal and reconcile.”

The emotional toll of the pandemic becomes evident when you look at the increasing number of clients.

In 2020, there were 2,200 kept appointments. That rose to 3,400 in 2021. And this year, if the numbers stay consistent, they’re on track for close to 4,000.

Addressing a few stigmas, Paul says while they are a values-based counselling service, they would never impose their values or beliefs on their clients.

“We are not here to proselytize. And we don’t want to answer questions that aren’t being asked. We will go wherever people want to go, if it’s significant to them. If it’s personal to them, we’ll go. If it’s a matter of faith,

we’ll go there with them, too. We’re not closing the door on anything.

We just want to respect the agenda of the people who are asking us to journey with them.”

He adds, “We can ally with anybody that has outcomes they value in life, that don’t hurt them or others.

When it’s going to hurt them, we want to challenge them. We ally with what’s good for people. And sometimes they don’t even see that it’s not a good thing. But we hope we can build a relationship where they can ask the questions and see for themselves. Moralizing is using truth to manipulate or pressure people to change. We don’t want to moralize; we want them to see. But you can’t do that if you don’t have a relationship. You have to build that connection with them first.”

He compares it to a dance. “We let them lead and step where they want to go. And we don’t want to be judgmental. To be judgmental is to communicate to people that they’re not worthy of our caring involvement. We don’t want to send that message. We want to send the opposite. That you are worth knowing and understanding.”

He also believes that the language needs to change. “The popular words ‘mental health’ should be replaced with ‘personal wellbeing’ and ‘emotional wellbeing’. They are different words with different inferences and I think they’re better.

‘Mental health’ makes people think there’s something wrong with their thinking capacity. That’s not usually

the issue. Emotional wellbeing is the real issue. They’re conflicted within themselves, or they’re in conflict with another person’s values. They value that person, so they want to sort that out. That’s not mental health.

That’s relational. Psychiatric disorders on the other hand, where there’s a neuro/biochemical feature to it, that’s different. I think because we call it mental health, it pulls people into that rubric and then we feel like, ‘Oh, that’s not me.’ That’s the stigma.”

He says, sometimes, just having someone to listen is all you need.

“Years ago, before I became a counsellor, I told my grandpa I wanted to hear his story. ‘Could we go to the park, and you tell me about things that were important to you?

Things that influenced your faith journey and your life.’ So we did. And we talked for three hours. And later, he said, ‘I never learned so much in all my life!’ and I was the one listening!

I think that’s true for people. They discover things that make sense to them because they’re putting feelings together with words. And the context when they’re talking about it - that’s like connecting the dots with lines.

“People should talk about things with people they can trust, and who care about their concerns. A professional is trained to handle more stuff than the average person. Finding people who care, matters. But when you’re stuck, it’s good to see a professional who listens well. And I think you will find that here.”

The longevity of any exterior finish hinges on the effort spent preparing your wood surface. Following the tips below will help to ensure the success of your outdoor painting or staining projects.

FUNDAMENTALS OF EXTERIOR FINISHING

For early spring and late fall paint/ stain projects, keep in mind that freezing temperatures may damage your freshly applied paint or stain.

The first week of any freshly applied exterior finish is very vulnerable to the weather elements.

Your wood surfaces should always be dry prior to priming, painting or staining.

Low to the ground wood structures are subject to premature failure of your paint or stain and ultimately wood decay.

When painting or staining in warm temperatures, avoid applying in direct sunlight. You may need to start early or work late to avoid the direct heat of the sun.

Benjamin Moore's oil based stains need to be applied wet on wet meaning you DO NOT allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat. It's best to roll your stain on using a 20mm pile roller onto 2 or 3 boards, then roll on again a second time, then back brush once working the stain into the wood surface. This may require working in small sections and/or with multiple people.

Take note that fog and dew fall can also contribute to damaging freshly applied paints and stains and will also be contributing factors as to when you can begin your project in the morning or how late you can work in the evening.

Always take a look at weather conditions prior to painting or staining. If precipitation is in the forecast, it is best to hold off as rain can damage your freshly applied paint or stain.

When priming exterior wood surfaces it is best to use an oil based primer. Oil based primers offer better adhesion, better stain blocking abilities and deeper penetration.

When painting or priming exterior concrete or brick surfaces it is best to use a water based primer or paint system which offers more breathability and is therefore less prone to peeling.

When applying white or pastel colours of solid colour stain onto raw wood, it is best to prime the surface with Benjamin Moore's 366-00 stain blocking primer to prevent tanin bleed.

When painting stucco it is best to wet down the stucco with water the night before you plan to paint.

This assists in keeping the surface cool and prevents the paint from penetrating too deep into the stucco.

Stir Fry Here’s a recipe that uses some ingredients you more than likely have at home already. Food costs are on the rise, but that doesn’t mean you need to stop creating at home. Eating healthy doesn’t need to take that much time or money. Here is a quick, simple and inexpensive dish that I’m sure your family will enjoy.

Time: 30 minutes Serves: 2 adults, 3 kids INGREDIENTS: 1 tbsp butter (or canola oil) 1 small yellow onion (diced) 2 stalks of celery (chopped) 1/2 red pepper (chopped) 5 small sweet peppers (sliced into rounds) Optional. Use full red pepper instead if you want.

1 garlic clove (minced) 2 chicken breast (cubed) 398 ml can of green beans (1/2 can. Save the other half for another recipe).

398 ml can of peas (1/2 can. Save the other half for another recipe).

350 teriyaki 4 tbsp soy sauce (divided) 1/2 tsp ginger powder Salt and pepper 1 green onion As many noodles as you desire. Use Mr. Noodle. Kids love it.

Melt butter over medium-high heat Add onions and celery and cook until translucent Add the peppers and cook until tender.

Add the garlic. Add here so you don’t burn it. Cooks faster than onions etc.

Turn down the heat to medium and add salt/pepper and ginger.

Add chicken and cook through.

Add the peas and green beans.

Add the teriyaki and 1/2 soy. Mix well.

Turn heat to low and leave it until noodles are done. The beans and peas will be cooked by then.

Bring a large pot of water to a slow boil.

Add your noodles and cook as per instructions.

Strain and return to the pot. Mix in the remaining 2 tbsp of soy and mix well.

Plate and enjoy!

SUPPLYING YOUR CLEAN DRINKING WATER SINCE 1991!

I

f you had never heard of the Pembina Valley Water Cooperative (PVWC) (no it’s not a new avant garde band) prior to 2020 you can be forgiven.

Tasked with the treating and distribution of water throughout the Pembina Valley region, the PVWC’s mission is “to maintain and enhance the quality of life for PVWC member

residents by providing reliable and affordable water that meets or exceeds the Canadian drinking water standards.”

The PVWC is owned by the 14 municipalities with one board member from each. The current cochairs are Don Wiebe, Reeve of the RM of Rhineland and George Grey, RM of Dufferin.

The regional organization responsible for treating and distributing water to approximately 62,000 people across more than 9,000 sq. km. has been quietly going about its business for more than 30 years.

Then in 2020 and 2021, an intense drought hit southern Manitoba

...it was a severe drought in the late 1980s that began the conversation... thrusting PVWC into the news and highlighting the foresight its founders had back in 1991.

Prior to 1991, individual municipalities and RMs were responsible for their own water infrastructures but the pain of the drought had shown local leaders that by working together, they might find efficiencies and be better prepared for such a circumstance if it came again – and

boy did it come again.

“If you want to know the main reason for the Pembina Valley Water Cooperative being formed, I would say that you need look no further than this past year’s serious drought,” said Sam Schellenberg who was the first CEO of the PVWC and instrumental in its creation. “That’s what we experienced in the late 1980s. For several years, the level of the lake at Morden and the level of the aquifer in Winkler were a serious concern, as was the level of the Red River, Dale Hoffman, who was at that time the mayor of Morris, walked across it. It was a very serious drought in all areas of the valley.”

They say necessity is the mother of invention and few regions are more inventive than the Pembina Valley. Schellenberg was part of the Pembina Valley Development

Corporation at the time and noted that the water conditions at the time forced the region to work together to resolve the issue.

“This was a real concern not only for the welfare of our residents, but it was a real blockage to

Eventually, the work of the task force would lead to the creation of the PVWC and an initial membership of 18 communities throughout the Pembina Valley region of southern Manitoba (which became the current 14 after provincial amalgamation efforts).

The good news is, the work of the PVWC over the years under the leadership of Schellenberg, Gord Martel and now Greg Archibald, has meant that, while difficult

and logistically challenging, they were able to meet the demands of the recent drought and in some ways exceed them by assisting communities like Morden. In addition, Winkler went beyond their historical partnership level while striking new arrangements that will allow for the storage and movement of water during future times of need.

“We are all about maintaining the infrastructure, to ensure adequate water flow and water pressure is provided, so we don’t have to put citizens into a boil water advisory,” said CEO Greg Archibald.

“PVWC is the best kept secret around because when things are operating the way you want them to be running, then nobody’s really

hearing anything - you’re providing water and the cooperative is doing its job meeting capacity issues.”

We are all about maintaining the infrastructure, to ensure adequate water flow and water pressure is provided...

The substantial growth in the region since the start of the PVWC means that not only was the infrastructure built to defray the impact of drought and low water concerns but

also to meet the increased demand of growing residential population, agriculture sector and industry.

“In the last 30 years, the growth in this region has been amazing,” said Archibald who noted the number of system upgrades that have had to occur to stay ahead of demand.

“We’re just going through planning processes right now and updating our 20-year plan.”

The PVWC pays for expansion with revenue from water rates which are set every five years and approved by the province’s Public Utilities Board.

This means the PVWC has to have a good idea of growth rates and water needs well in advance, because it does not fund projects through taxation.

Adding to this complexity is the fact that there are numerous jurisdictions overlapping in responsibility for PVWC water sources. This includes federal, provincial and in the case of the Red River which flows into Manitoba from North Dakota, even international. Within each jurisdiction there can be numerous ministries involved, requiring decisions that need to be worked on well in advance of implementation, making staying ahead of the curve as much an art as it is a science.

In terms of infrastructure, the PVWC owns and maintains water treatment plants at Stephenfield,

Morris and Letellier. The combined water production of all three plants is 820 million imperial gallons (3.727 billion liters).

Most recently the Stephenfield plant was upgraded to meet 100 percent of Carman’s water needs pumping out up to 60 liters per second to Carman and surrounding municipalities from the Stephenfield Lake. The Morris and Letellier plants draw water from the Red River.

Morris has a potential capacity of 100 liters per second while Letellier is rated for 86 liters per second.

Every plant is connected to customers via a complex monitored network of pipes, booster stations and reservoirs, through a control system.

It’s an impressive arsenal of equipment staffed by a knowledgeable crew who were able to meet the double whammy of Covid and a severe drought headon and continue to provide water through what has likely been the most difficult two years in its existence.

One of the municipalities who is supplied water by PVWC, said to Archibald. “15 to 20 percent of the milk production in Manitoba comes from our area”. Archibald said, “We had to maintain their water supply last summer or otherwise it would have had milk production impact...

Over 6% of the nine agricultural municipalities water usage for the entire year goes out in 3 months for weed control spraying alone.

Archibald estimates around 30 percent of our total water flows from PVWC goes into agriculture so it’s huge.”

agriculture can be a challenge but it’s one understood by PVWC board co-chair George Gray who started his involvement with the cooperative 15 years ago as the Dufferin representative on the board. Gray represents a number of different demographics – he’s the Reeve of the RM of Dufferin, a former councillor and a local farmer. Gray understands water from a variety of perspectives and brings that valuable insight to bear.

“Before rural water was available, we had a 1,500-gallon cistern in the basement of our farmhouse,” said Gray. “When I was growing up, the eaves troughs diverted the rain off of the roof to the cistern. We filled a cream can with water for drinking and cooking from our neighbour’s well in Graysville because we could not get a well to provide water to us.”

in rural Manitoba speaks to the importance of water to running a farm and to agriculture as an industry. His family had to haul water at least once a week. His experience mirrors much of rural Manitoba’s and contributed to Gray’s understanding of the importance and value of a unique initiative like the PVWC. Decades before the PVWC came into being, Gray recalls a trip through North Dakota where he noticed white poles with signs reading ‘rural water’ which got him wondering.

“I asked someone what did the words ‘rural water’ mean,” Gray said.

“They responded that North Dakota farmers were hooked up to potable water that was provided by pipelines.

“Oh my, I thought – would we in Dufferin in the rural area ever dare to dream of that?”

Gray’s and other rural farm resident’s dreams came true with the inception of PVWC in the 90s and the impact was huge.

“No more hauling water just turn on the tap,” said Gray. “That was the single greatest improvement to quality of life any rural ratepayer could dream of. People also have the option to hook up a line to water cattle, hog barns, dairy farms. The advantages of rural water provided

by PVWC are endless in a rural setting.”

As a political representative and a farmer, Gray has come to understand the importance of water to the growth of the region.

It’s an importance he is eager to communicate as the Pembina Valley has been one of the fastest growing places in Canada over the past two decades.

“PVWC is the hub that virtually all economic development has to depend on,” said Gray, noting the rapid expansion of industry in the region. “Without a safe,

guaranteed water supply, economic development would be very limited.

PVWC has done and will do its utmost to satisfy water needs and further economic development in the area.”

As Gray noted, the region is constantly expanding and now with Covid slowly fading into the past and a spring that has come with plenty of water, Archibald and PVWC staff

have redoubled their efforts to seek the resources required to continue to grow infrastructure to meet demand.

Along with demand growth climate change has definitely become a factor lending even greater importance to the work of the PVWC. As we move into the future, southern Manitoba needs to prepare for more years of spring flooding and summer/fall drought.

This requires an infrastructure that

can capture and store water in the spring to be able to use it in the lean summer and fall months as well as to move it under pressure to where it is needed most.

Like a circulatory system, the PVWC is building infrastructure that keeps people and business alive and growing throughout southern Manitoba. While we all understand the need for water as individuals and families (drinking, cooking, cleaning, recreation etc.) the significant business needs– when not met – could force business and industry to move or consider other locations.

This is why planning for growth continues. Recently $17.2 million of funding was approved to further enhance the Letellier plant.

needs. He is the Manitoba Board Member on the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association. He also serves as an executive board member of the Red River Basin Commission and provides leadership for the Water Supply Working Group as part of Basin Drought Planning.

“Advocacy is a big part of the role,” said Archibald. “I have to work with municipal, provincial, federal, and state resources. By knowing what is going on across the country, this helps me understand the impact of things in advance.”

While the complexities of administration and growth keep him busy, Archibald says the logistics of managing a complex infrastructure’s needs and meeting client demand could not be done without the tireless efforts of PVWC’s welltrained staff.

“I’m a people person and this is all about people,” said Archibald who stressed the importance of connecting with the highly trained staff. “Our operators, engineers, admin and finance people help wherever they can – they are experts at what they do.”

It’s that expertise Archibald hopes member municipalities leverage.

“The 14 municipalities own us- why wouldn’t you take advantage of our expertise?” said Archibald. “That is all part of living in a cooperative – helping each other out and collaborating. We’re a community.”

When you turn on your tap for a drink of water take a moment and consider the significance of that simple act. You are a part of that community. When you run water for your hogs or cattle you are taking part in a complex, collaborative effort of people, infrastructure and technology that stretches over 9,000 sq. km and links you to more than 62,000 others in the Pembina Valley – all thanks to the PVWC, the staff there now and the vision of those that came before.

MANY HANDS Rising inflation, skyrocketing gas and food prices… the compounding effects are especially being felt by those facing poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity.

T

he initial discussion group on food security and the first Many Hands formal board, were all people in professions where they saw the poverty in individuals and families that may not be obvious to other community members. “People would be shocked. We see a significant need, and we feel like we can’t walk away, we have to address it.”

It’s the reason the Many Hands Resource Centre has made itself a refuge in the city of Morden since 2012.

Board member Brenda Klassen says that since the beginning, the founders were keenly aware of the silent struggles of many families in Southern Manitoba.

“We really see every situation that you would see in Winnipeg, people struggling with addictions, mental health, people out of work for a variety of reasons.”

More than 50 families come every week to the food bank and the need is growing.

But the resolve and good work at Many Hands Resource Centre is also growing.

People would be shocked. We see a significant need, and we feel like we can’t walk away, we have to address it.

“It’s great to work with a team of people who are all passionate about the work that we do, and to know we’re making a big difference in our community,” Klassen says.

The growing team of volunteers from all walks of life has allowed Many Hands to kickstart more projects, buoyed by the enthusiasm of local leaders and the generosity of local residents. The organization runs completely on donations, grants, and volunteer hours.

Some volunteers have also experienced need themselves and are now helping improve their neighbours’ lives.

“They feel it’s their life’s mission, and they’re dedicated,” Klassen says. “Some volunteers come every single week and give their all into the relationships we’re developing with the people of Morden, just making sure that the support that Many Hands needs is there… we really could not do what we do without them.”

Board Chair, Dr. Daniel Klauke, initially became involved with Many Hands near the beginning of the

RESOURCE CENTRE pandemic through his church as they looked to identify gaps in the community. With a need for board members at Many Hands, Klauke says he was interested in getting involved.

He says the community meal continues to be an effective way to meet people where they’re at.

Nothing brings people together like sharing a meal. It’s an opportunity to build relationship, get to know someone, and also meet a tangible need.

At first, he was nervous to take the role of board chair, but Klauke says the team of staff and volunteers were so supportive, it was really a joy and an honour to take the helm.

And since receiving Non Profit of the Year in 2020, the vision and momentum behind Many Hands has only accelerated. Program Coordinator Tracey Krause says as part of the strategic planning that next year, the need for a larger space was identified. That vision would soon lead to their new drop-in at 500 Stephen St.

Now, people have a comfortable space to stop in, have a cup of coffee, rest and relax and have a conversation.

So far, the response from the community has been overwhelming, and interestingly the comment they’ve heard most is people feel a sense of dignity when walking into the beautifully renovated space.

One of the hidden consequences of not having food in your house is it keeps you from inviting a neighbour over. Food insecurity creates a cycle of isolation and loneliness.

The 500 Stephen St. location is a way to break out of that cycle.

Meanwhile, the Morden Community Food Bank runs Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We’ve come a long way from the first wheels used more than 5,500 years ago, to what Sunvalley Tire sells and services today.

Not only that but you have magazines like Tire Technology dedicated to the space and industry events like Tire Technology Expo for instance that will showcase 73 different types of trends and technologies affecting tires. There’s even an intelligent tire that comes complete with a premounted sensor that constantly monitors pressure and temperature of the tire and transmits the information in real time.

If you are running a fleet of 100 semis the ability to quickly, and easily access critical information about the tires without having to run around to each and every one of them on every vehicle saves an enormous amount of time and what saves time, saves money.

It may sound like the stuff of science fiction but it makes sense when you consider that we trust the tire, more than any other component, with the safety of our families, as well as the commercial drivers of semis and agricultural equipment.

With 30 years of experience under their belt, owner/founder Ken Hildebrand and his 38 staff will tell you nothing could be further from the truth. Like any good tool you need the right tire for the right job and that’s where Sunvalley Tire comes in.

The business was started originally in Morden on Thornhill Street back in 1992 where a small crew of five worked diligently growing the business and providing the best customer service they could offer.

“I’ve been here about 28 years,” said Harry Fehr. “We were only in the Morden shop for about one or two years before we outgrew it and moved to a larger shop in Winkler.”

and part of the next generation, recollects growing up in the business and the earliest days in Morden.

“I remember playing around the shop as a kid,” said Hildebrand who

No longer that kid who spent time playing in tires, Hildebrand has been working full-time at Sunvalley for more than 16 years, not counting

time spent as a teenager working for the business.

These days Hildebrand spends his time working alongside the rest of the crew doing whatever needs to be done, helping the clients and ensuring the business continues to grow in the 16,500 sq. ft. facility they opened in 2014.

“It’s not big enough anymore,” notes Ken’s sister Marion Peters who also commented on the growth of staff.

“I’m glad they wear name tags. There was a time when I knew everybody but you cannot keep up, the growth has been so strong.”

Fehr agrees.

“I remember having a discussion with Marion when we were thinking of building the new facility and having to reassure ourselves that this would be good.”

It was a big step up from the older building and a huge investment but one Ken and the team felt was necessary to better serve

customers and continue to grow as the region grew. They were right.

Today even at more than 16,000 sq. ft., three times the size of the older location, Sunvalley has multiple storage facilities to manage their ever growing inventory.

Not only does Sunvalley have extensive operations in Winkler, they have also operated a location in Altona with four staff since 2008.

“To me it’s unbelievable,” said Ken’s brother Marvin Hildebrand, voicing what many feel when they have been a part of a successful and thriving business for years.

The larger facility means’ Sunvalley has six bays to service cars, SUVs and pickup trucks, two larger bays for semis and a large area for work on agricultural vehicles whose tires can run as much as $10,000 each –with some tractors needing up to eight. That’s $80,000 in tires.

With that kind of investment it’s no wonder so many have relied on Sunvalley to do the work right.

In the older building, it was a struggle just to get a semi into the bay without hitting the building and sometimes the door wouldn’t close which made for some cold work in the middle of winter.

At this point, discussion starts lingering on stories from the old days of having to tarp around the back of semis that

didn’t quite fit to keep the cold out and the ingenuity applied by staff to make sure the work was done well.

“The growth was there to warrant a different shop,” said Fehr. “The truck bay was too small and one truck bay was limited.”

Anyone in business knows it takes more than a growing market to make a successful operation. You have to know when to invest to stay ahead of the market and continue to offer the best service. This is an area that all staff agree – Ken has excelled in allowing Sunvalley to move from once cramped quarters to where they are now.

“I don’t miss my little office,” said Peters with a laugh. “The growth of trucking and agriculture in our region definitely grew the business.”

That’s one of the things you notice about Sunvalley Tire. There’s a friendly camaraderie that pervades the environment. It’s as though they managed to maintain that family business mentality even as the business grew to where it is today.

Fehr agrees that Sunvalley is family to him. It’s what’s kept him at the business all these years and it’s a trait they share with numerous other businesses in the region that have managed to not simply survive but thrive.

“I didn’t know how long I was going to be working for Sunvalley, but I didn’t think I would still be here 28 years later,” said Fehr. “It’s a good place with good people and I haven’t had any reason to leave.”

Fehr represents a rare breed of employee these days – one who stays and commits over the long term.

With staffing becoming an issue for companies not just in the Pembina Valley but across the country, maintaining an environment that keeps them around is more and more a critical part of remaining successful.

“Harry may not be part of the family

but he has become part of the family,” said Peters who noted – “I just came to help file and I’m still here too.”

Ken’s wife Glenda Hildebrand, who has also worked for the company, reflected on where the company has grown from its humble beginnings in Morden and the kind of character required to see the success Sunvalley has seen.

“Ken was 18 years old when he started in the business,” said Hildebrand who noted he spent 10 years working for others before striking out on his own. “He liked being able to make his own decisions and you can’t do that in a lot of places so he started his own company.”

When the new location was opened in 2014 Ken Hildebrand reflected on what it took to get to where Sunvalley is now and some of the challenges along the way.

“We made do with what we had,” Hildebrand said. “It was tough but we did it - before when we had two vehicles and a semi in the shop it was

pretty much full. Now we can get six vehicles, two semis and a tractor. We can do a lot more at one time.”

Staff credit the region’s growth and great customer base with Sunvalley’s success and you can see this in the demographics over the years.

But no matter how large the shop and no matter how well you keep up with changes in the industry, success comes down to two key factors – great clients and great employees offering the best customer service they can.

In 1992 when Sunvalley started the population of Winkler was just 6,500 people. Now it is closing in on 15,000 – that’s well over double in 30 years, a growth rate a lot of businesses would struggle to serve but Sunvalley’s vision has meant an ability to keep pace and thrive.

“You have to be able to adapt to keep up with the competition,” said Fehr.

“You never really 100 percent know what is going to stick in terms of change and new technology so you have to be ready, willing and able to provide what the client is looking for.”

In the early days of Sunvalley, a lot of work was done on passenger vehicles like cars, SUVs and pickup trucks. These days, staff estimate as much as 70 percent of the business is now focused on commercial

It’s a sentiment Harry and the others agree with wholeheartedly. You cannot take customers for granted if you still want to be in business 30 years after you start out.

If you experience one or a few of the following points, maybe it’s time to update your tired BBQ or smoker 5 Signs You Need to Upgrade Your Grill FOOD ISN’T FLAVORFUL Grease buildup, broken components and other aspects on your old grill can give your food a bitter, unpleasant or gaslike flavor. If this is happening, it’s probably time to upgrade to a new model. One of the coolest things about grilling is that you can dramatically impact the flavor of your food, depending on the grill itself. For example, a burger cooked on a charcoal grill will have a much more charred, smoky flavor than one cooked on a gas grill. The same goes for smokers.

Be sure to consider flavor differences when considering a pellet smoker vs. a charcoal smoker.

IT’S N OT GETTING HOT EN OUG H Size isn’t the only thing to consider when thinking about upgrading. You also want to think about cooking power. When shopping for grills, look at the British Thermal Units (BTUs). BTU is a way to measure heat. Typically, gas grills put out about 100 BTUs per square inch of cooking surface. Don’t obsess over BTUs, but consider going to a higher output if your current grill isn’t getting hot enough. Note that other factors contribute to the heat output of your grills, such as the construction and overall size. Sturdy construction and thoughtful design can boost heat power without a high BTU. IT DOESN’T DO ANYTH ING BESID ES GRILL Single-use grills are great for beginners, but as you advance and get more comfortable with this style of cooking, you might want to expand your portfolio and learn other cooking styles. For example, you might consider advancing to a pellet grill to learn smoking techniques in addition to grilling. If you want the ability to smoke food with charcoal or pellets, consider the kamado grill for your next cooker. You may also want to try a gas grill that also has a griddle feature because who doesn’t want to whip up diner-style breakfast food on the patio in the morning?

CRACKED HOSES AND CONNECTOR S Replacing a cracked gas hose is a safety must. Do the bubble test: Mix a bit of dishwashing liquid and water in a spray bottle, then spray over hoses and connections to the gas tank. Bubbling is a sign of a leak.

GAUGES AND CONTROLS ARE BROKEN If your goal is to grill steakhouse-worthy ribeyes or smoke award-winning briskets, you simply can’t work with a beat-up appliance. Broken, inaccurate gauges can be a recipe for disaster and leave you with tough, overcooked meat (the horror!) or undercooked messes. Broken knobs and controls will also hold you back from reaching the precise temperature required and prevent you from making essential adjustments as you cook. Replace, repair or upgrade your grill if you’re working with damaged gauges and controls.

When you dig long enough you usually uncover things. In the case of the Letkeman family, what they uncovered was a thriving business – Winkler-based Triple L Excavating.

The story goes that founder and family patriarch John C. Letkeman got tired of the grind hauling asphalt and gravel taking him away from the family. Eventually he had enough and got down to business – literally – stepping into the role of an entrepreneur.

“He was told he was needed to work on Sunday one weekend,” said his son Bob. “He said he wasn’t doing that, so they fired him. They called him to come back to work on the following Monday and he said ‘it’s too late, I bought a backhoe’. That was about 1978.”

At the time Bob and his younger brother Rick, now partners in Triple L, had no plans to be in the excavation business. Bob spent the first seven years after school working in agriculture for local farmers.

It wasn’t until 1986, after their father had a massive heart attack, that they bought into the business and christened Triple L Excavating, after the three Letkemans. Up until that point their father had been taking small jobs locally fulfilling his desire to stay close to the family.

The Letkemans spent the next several years developing the business alongside their father excavating 78

basements, preparing housing and industrial developments and eventually growing the business to do asphalt road work but in the early days the jobs were smaller.

We want to have a good reputation and if there’s issues they know we’ll work through them.

“We just did basements, sewer and water,” said Rick who noted that the types of jobs and the business grew as the region grew.

Things ticked along at a reasonable pace until 1998 when John Letkeman passed away at the young age of 60 leaving his family to carry on the business legacy that he had started 20 years earlier.

“Dad left us a good name,” said Bob. “He was well known and respected by a lot of people. He would be in the coffee shop and someone would say ‘come do this for me next week’ or they would phone the house and he would just get things done.”

John Letkeman’s solid reputation combined with the rapid growth of the region and southern Manitoba (one of the fastest growing in Canada for the past 20 years) helped to accelerate the business of Triple L and ensure a steady stream of revenue and work.

“Dad built the reputation that we now try to uphold. We try our best to do good and professional work to keep our customers happy” said Bob. The longevity doesn’t hurt either - it’s been 44 years since John Letkeman decided to run his own business and things don’t show any sign of slowing down.

Running an excavating business in 2022 is very different than in 1986. The pace of development has translated to higher expectations and shorter deadlines. There’s more competition and more of an instant gratification mindset when it comes to home building.

“There’s a lot of pressure to get stuff done these days,” said Bob. “The way they put up a building now is very different. When the road is done the shingles are already there for the house and everything just keeps moving.”

The pace is just one of the things that

has changed over the past several decades. A business unable to keep up with the change will not survive.

The market is very different today compared to 30 years ago.

other regular get-togethers where the temptation to blend work and pleasure can be high but the Letkemans have found a way to make it work.

“Back then a subdivision would go in and the lots would sell a year or two later,” said Bob. “Now you have to hurry up because some of the lots are already pre-sold. It’s a faster pace now compared to then. You didn’t have cell phones, you waited until lunch for people to get a hold of you and make a decision.”

“It works for us to separate the jobs,” said Bob. “I stay in the office and Rick goes out into the field and takes care of things there.”

These days, Bob spends most of his time in the office while Rick continues to operate equipment and work in the field on various job sites along with other staff. Their sister Karen also helps with the accounting and books and Bob’s son Jason has been developing an interest spanning the business across three generations.

“He’s 19 years old and likes to do a little bit of everything,” said Bob. “He helps mostly on the paving crew and can operate a loader and an excavator.”

Working with family always brings unique challenges as any familyoperated business person will tell you. There’s family gatherings and

While business can definitely change the family dynamic another thing that has changed in the decades since Triple L began the excavating business is the equipment. On the outside, the average backhoe or pay loader may look very much like they did 30 years ago, but don’t let looks deceive you.

“There’s a lot of technology in the machines now if you want it,” said

Rick who noted that otherwise the machines were essentially unchanged.

One of the new pieces of technology is the addition of Global Positioning Systems or GPS in backhoes.

According to Construction Equipment magazine “GPS-based grade control on excavators provides the exact position and orientation of the bucket to achieve grade faster without stakes.”

GPS can assist the operator in accurate 3D positioning of the bucket in relation to coordinates provided by an engineer for large scale projects like subdivision development preparation. It can also be applied to grading, trenching and dredging.

GPS excavator systems have in-cab operator displays that are designed to be intuitive and simple to use, maximizing operator productivity and allowing even those who claim to be ‘technology challenged’ to be more productive and proficient in a short period of time.

Of course additional benefits include security because the addition of an onboard GPS can allow for the tracking of stolen equipment and even allow you to setup geofencing that designates a zone the equipment is expected to stay within.

With technology like GPS contributing to things like speed and accuracy, a business like Triple L can spend more time taking on more jobs and not just in the Pembina Valley either. Triple L has expanded to take on jobs throughout southern Manitoba.

“We’ll go anywhere we’re needed,” said Rick who noted they have completed jobs all over the province including near Brandon, and in Niverville which has seen enormous growth over the past 5 years.

For the past six years, Triple L has expanded from the traditional excavation business and has been 80

doing road work and related contracts as well.

Rick recalls learning how to use the backhoe from his father John.

“We had an opportunity to purchase the equipment from another business and take on ashphalt patching,” said Bob. “We thought it was something we could use. If there is a road that needs paving we can do that or even small patches, driveways and sections.”

“A lot of it was just sitting back and watching him,” said Rick. “That’s where I learned most of my stuff from. He always liked it when we were around.”

Triple L had noticed that a lot of the roads contracts were going to out-oftown companies because there just wasn’t a lot of local capability. By expanding the business to take on paving and patching Triple L has kept the service local.

Through all of the growth and expansion Bob and Rick continue to appreciate the lessons their father taught them along the way and credit him for a lot of Triple L’s success and longevity.

“He taught me about patience,” said Bob. “I remember digging for something at this guy’s house once and we couldn’t find this certain hose and it was getting late and he said ‘we’re better off to shovel here by hand than if I hit it with the backhoe because then we’ll be here all night’.”

The kind of patient teaching that informed the early days of Triple L and shaped Bob and Rick’s careers continues to have an impact on the business as they look to the future and consider the next generation.

“I know Jason would like to continue to have a lot to do with the business nd hopefully it can be something he will carry on” said Bob who still sees himself involved for a long time to come yet. “I haven’t had a plan to stop at 65 and retire.”

Today, Triple L is definitely a different business than it was when it started back in 1986. Back then they had built up from the original backhoe bought in 1978 to two backhoes and a tandem truck. They were still operating on the family farmyard out of a small 1,800 square foot shop which was made by purchasing and moving part of the old Valley Bakery building from Winkler to their property in Reinfeld.

“Now, the little 1,800 square foot building seems like a little backyard shop compared to the 6,000 square foot space they own in Winkler. Even that space has constraints as they rent additional storage space for some equipment.

“Our thing is not having a big shop,” said Bob chuckling. “If the guys are all in the shop working, we’re not making any money. Although, having a little bit more space would be nice.”

Today Triple L operates five excavators, five pay loaders, one backhoe, three skid steers, 10 trucks, a paver, two packers and a grader – a long way from the early days and a testimony to the hard work and ability of the family.

While they made it through the past two years of Covid with minimal impact on their business and with a better than average year shaping up, the future’s only constraints is securing and keeping trained staff.

“The biggest headache there is, is finding employees,” said Rick who noted that the seasonal nature of the business where staff may not be working in the winter makes it challenging to sustain a good, welltrained workforce. “We have good

year round staff now and usually find additonal staff when things get busier, but it is challenging around this area since there is so much opportunity out there,” explains Bob.

Dad would be in awe... he would be proud of us.

The journey from a business that started so that a man could spend more time with his family to an operation more than 40 years later that still provides for that family and a new generation is one they think would impress John.

“Dad would be in awe,” said Bob. “He would be proud of us. At the time he was just trying to make a little money.

He wanted to do better. That he would take the time to teach us as we grew up and leave us such a good name has helped get us where we are today.”

From the early days of a young father just trying to spend more time with his family to a the organization that exists now more than four decades later the business that John C. Letkeman started continues to thrive and serve the Pembina Valley and southern Manitoba under his son’s Bob and Rick.

It was then, with the help of a large donation to the community, that a group of visionaries came together to chart a new future and one important piece was the establishment of the Plum Coulee Community Foundation.

Plum Coulee was finding its new identity as a bedroom community as they transitioned from a farming community.

20 years later, the grain elevator still stands, renovated into The Prairie View Elevator Museum honouring the legacy of Plum Coulee. New walking trails have sprung up around the charming town, four downtown business blocks are refreshed, the Saidye Rosner Bronfman Town Square is developing with bright storefronts, and the inviting Sunset Beach still attracts swimmers all summer.

Where neighbours used to be excited to see one new home built a year, the community now sees many new constructions every year as the

town itself has grown to over 1,000.

And it all centred around the work of the Plum Coulee Community Foundation and its faithful volunteers with a passion for their community.

In 2022, the group looks back on its 20th anniversary.

“Our community has gotten very young, there’s something about having walking trails and beaches and things like that in your community,” local resident and Plum Coulee Community Foundation board member Heather Unger says, adding the average age is only 26 in Plum Coulee.

“So it’s a very young town and probably some of that contributing factor would be this downtown core work. I’m a business person in this community so it’s resonated with me to keep the core of our community strong and to try and keep a central gathering point. You know, here we are 20 years later, and reflecting back the community

is doing well. And I like to think the foundation had a lot to do with it.”

Unger has been part of the Plum Coulee Foundation since the beginning. She explains it all started with the generous gift of the Samuel & Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation (SSBFF) 20 years ago.

In 2001, the Plum Coulee Centennial History Book was being written and contact was made with the family of Councillor Rosner who served in 1900, and daughter Saidye Bronfman

of the SSBFF in Montreal. From that connection, together with the newly created Plum Coulee Community Foundation, they developed a five-year plan to flow through a generous $1 million gift from the SSBFF. The first year was a flurry of activity to channel the charitable funds.

Avery Schulz, a local teacher took a leave of absence to help set up the development corporation which would begin the work of revitalizing the core of the community.

The community quickly came together to create focused committees to rebuild the town including the revitalization of the downtown core, eventually saving the grain elevator which would house the local museum, and establishing the Saidye Rosner Bronfman Town Square. Even the old water reservoirs were made a priority. They were cleaned up and a beach was developed, along with a catch and release pond.

During a time when many businesses were being drawn out to the highway, the founding members knew the key to the long-term success of the town was creating a strong downtown core as they transitioned from a farming community to a bedroom community.

Then in 2008, the Plum Coulee Community Foundation switched focus to establish a community endowment fund with $100,000

from the SSBFF partnership and $70,000 from the closure of the Plum Coulee Co-op. A second fund, a $100,000 Prairie View Elevator Fund is also established from the SSBFF partnership, and together the interest from each fund is granted annually.

Since then, the PCCF has made it its mission to grow the funds with the help of local volunteers and donors, providing a boost to a broad range of projects and local causes, as well as the Citizen of the Year Award and the Community Builder of the Past Award.

In 2016, the Youth in Philanthropy was founded, tasking grade 6-8 students with granting out $3,500 every year to Plum Coulee organizations and initiatives, while also taking part in local communitybuilding themselves through collecting donations for the food cupboard, and writing thank-you cards to medical personnel.

Now the foundation stewards over $700,000. Last year alone they were able to grant out a total of nearly $15,000 to 11 local organizations that touched on literacy through the Imagination Library, water rescue equipment for the local fire department, as well as sports, flower planting for the downtown area, the Pembina Valley Humane Society and the Plum Coulee Pedestrian Bridge project.

“As a new foundation, we had to almost go to every committee meeting and say, “Hey, how can we help you?” It takes a while for everybody to kind of figure out what this big savings account for Plum Coulee is all about,” Unger explains. “With the interest every year we can spread the joy around 86

and we try really hard to spread it around to the seniors, kids, healthcare, and the arts, all the facets of the community.”

And while you always wish you had more, this year there’ll be $30,000 invested into Plum Coulee with special anniversary expenditures at the annual Plum Fest.

“So that’s a pretty nice little number that we’re able to spoil the community with.”

Born and raised in small town Manitoba, Unger believes if you want something new in town you have to put in the time and energy as a volunteer.

“To me, that’s what builds my community spirit is you know, the more energy I put into my community the more I love where I am.”

“The community foundation movement in Manitoba is the strongest in Canada. I’ve attended every conference. I love it. I love the energy of the people that are involved in community foundations, it’s just a really fun organization to be a part of. We’ve all been a part of organizations where we beat our heads against the wall to raise money. Well, this was a wonderful one where we actually get to give some away so it’s a feel-good thing for sure.”

20 Years of

Plum Fest!

When the men building the railway through Southern Manitoba came across the Hespeler Drain area, they were struck by the plum trees that dotted the landscape along the railway line.

The name Plum Coulee stuck.

ince then, Plum Coulee has become known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere, vibrant business community, and tourist attractions like the museum housed in a renovated grain elevator, a popular beach, and its annual summer festival, Plum Fest.

After a two-year hiatus, the Plum Fest is back and organizers are going all-out for its 20th anniversary this August.

June Letkeman is a name many can associate with the thriving community. She has been spotted on numerous committees and foundations including Town Council. In her 27 years, she says Plum Coulee still holds her heart.

To promote healing and unity after the tumultuous pandemic that split families and communities, the Plum Coulee Foundation along with funds from the Plum Coulee Elementary Youth in Philanthropy committee, have secured an inspiring art exhibit and performance known as Six String Nation. The project is the brainchild of Canadian broadcaster Jowi Taylor; who created a guitar

Taylor conceived of the original idea in the aftermath of the 1995 Quebec referendum, another divisive time in Canada’s history.

“I’m very passionate about Plum Coulee, I think it’s the best community ever. The people that live there make the community, and I know when we moved in, they made us feel welcomed. It wasn’t long before it felt like home.”

A highlight for both her and the annual Plum Fest was hosting

the wedding of the decade. Plum Coulee’s favourite daughter and celebrated violinist, the world over, Rosemary Siemens and fiancé Eli Bennett invited the entire town to their celebration in 2017.

Letkeman recalls it was the biggest party Plum Fest had ever seen.

“It was such a wonderful weekend and she brought with her the most talented people you can imagine.

So, we had a show on Saturday and one like no other. It was so fortunate for us that she wanted to have the wedding there, we’ve never had crowds like that.”

committee has seen a lot of familiar faces bringing the event together, Letkeman says they’re seeing new volunteers and young voices stepping up.

While it was a massive undertaking for the organizing committee, Letkeman says it made such an impact on people. They still have visitors from across the country who return for the festival because they had such a wonderful time at the wedding.

“So, it’s going to evolve, and it’s going to be great.”

Along with her unforgettable Plum Fest wedding, Siemens recorded the album, ‘Plum Coulee My Home’ honouring her Southern Manitoba roots in 2016.

To say thanks, the community erected a sign in her honour at the entrance of town and revealed it at the summer festival.

Throughout the years, Plum Fest has been the highlight and connection point for the community.

“It’s just a wonderful thing for our community, and it brings people to our small town. It’s a lot of work. It takes a lot of people and we all work together.”

And while the organizing

The weekend kicks off with a fundraiser supper Friday night in support of the Plum Coulee Pedestrian Bridge project. The project is another initiative that Letkeman has devoted her own energy and time towards.

“We really need a bridge. It’s not a frivolous thing,” she says, adding it’s not only about the safety and convenience of pedestrians, but it would be a symbolic connection of unity in the community.

The Plum Fest activities cop off Friday night with a Street Dance from 7:00 p.m - 10:00 p.m.

The ever-popular Waffles and Crackles Breakfast tradition continues Saturday morning starting at 7:30 a.m, followed by the Parade and Duck Race.

The Street Market runs from 11:00 a.m - 4:30 p.m, alongside the bouncy houses and yard games.

While face painting takes place from noon until 2:00 p.m, and

the Reptile Show runs 1:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m. At 11:00 a.m Silas Presley takes to the main stage.

At 1:00 p.m on Saturday, Dale Maksymic takes to the Main Stage, at which time the Fireman’s Rodeo also begins at 1:00 p.m. Next, Matt Zimmerman performs on Main Stage at 3:00 p.m followed

by Winona Avenue at 5:00 p.m.

Saturday night also features a street supper. This year, chicken and beef brisket are on the menu from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m.

“And then we always have fresh corn on the cob, fresh salad and potatoes and everything else. It’s always very well attended as well.”

Cracked Egg Shells take to the Main Stage at 7:00 p.m and again at 9:00 p.m.

“And then of course for our finale show, we always try to have special entertainment. And then we have our fireworks. I love fireworks, it creates that festival kind of feeling.”

Plum Fest closes out on Sunday with an outdoor community church service put on by the local churches followed by a hot dog and home fries lunch, and entertainment

Things are kind of returning back to normal but not quite. It’s a strange weird kind of thing. It’s almost like it was but it’s not the same at all.

We’re coming out of a winter that seemed to have no end. We’ve gone from much too dry to much too wet.

Those kinds of weather things, while stressful, have always been there. Sit down and talk to anyone over the age of 10 and they remember better or worse times depending on the conversation. That’s not what I’m talking about.

We go for a walk and see hateful messages scrawled along the pathways around town. There’s a scary war in Ukraine that touches many of us uncomfortably closely.

A young man murders 10 innocent people in Buffalo just because they look different than he does. Another young man goes into a school and kills 19 kids. None of it makes any sense.

It seems that we’ve collectively lost any ability to consider anything that is not exactly the same as us.

LAST WORD

It doesn’t matter where you fall on any faith or political or lifestyles choice spectrum, we’ve decided that everything is about ME. My rights.

My ideas. My way. If you don’t think like I do, YOU are wrong. If you don’t look like I do, YOU don’t belong. If you don’t believe what I do, YOU are a bigot or worse. . . . and just when it all seems to be too much, we run into an initiative like Pay It Forward May and we are reminded again how great our community is when we stop thinking just about ourselves. People loving on people. Neighbour helping neighbour. People looking for ways they can to do something (anything) nice for someone else. It’s the simple stuff that makes the difference.

Some people bought coffee for the next person in line. Others mowed the lawn for someone just because.

Businesses and churches organized community fundraisers and cleanups and ‘free for everyone’ bbqs. People fell all over themselves trying to do nice things for one another. No one cared if you were vaccinated or not. No one cared what you believed (or didn’t believe). No one cared what your thoughts were around

mandates. No one cared how you dressed or how you looked.

That’s how we rebuild communities… by thinking ‘what can I do?’… and then doing it. That’s how we heal… by considering others before ourselves.

That’s easy to say but way harder to live out. In fact, it’s impossible to live out if we don’t interact with people.

It’s too easy to pass judgement if you’ve never talked to someone. Get together and listen at least twice as much as you talk and watch what happens. It’s way harder to hate someone after you’ve had a real conversation with them.

The sun is out and it’s finally warming up. Maybe we should get outside and visit with our neighbours and find out who they are and what’s going on in their lives. Let’s celebrate our differences rather than be scared of them.
