G

rowing up in Plum Coulee, Peter Loewen enjoyed the carefree lifestyle the local area offered. With an itch for adventure and the need for a change of scenery, in his late teens and early twenties he took to travelling the world. However, Peter didn’t travel the way most do, he did these tours on a bike. While biking through places like Germany, Vietnam and the east coast of the United States, he was always sure to visit the local bike shops. He loved how they seemed to offer a sense of community. Something he began to appreciate more about his hometown every time he went abroad.

Country Cycle was started by Henry Klassen in 1980. The shop was located just south of Winkler in the village of Chortitz.

In 2009, when Peter returned to the area, a chance meeting with Henry began the process of taking over the business. Peter was taken under Henry’s wing for a year as he learned the ins and outs of the bike shop. Equipped with a deeper knowledge of bikes, Peter took what he experienced in other shops around the world and created what Country Cycle is today.

While the first years of bike shop ownership were hard work in and of themselves, the fifth year brought about a major event that would change the course of the story. A fire due to arson completely burnt Peter’s shop to the ground. “When faced with a situation like that, you have no idea what do next. It’s completely overwhelming when something you’ve put so much of yourself into is just suddenly gone,” Peter recalls.

That next day, Sunday, was scheduled to be the day

of Country Cycle’s biggest organized community event, “The Back 40” mountain bike race. Instead of cancelling Peter decided to go ahead with the event.

“The Back 40” is one of three races Country Cycle organizes in the area and hosts on the Manitoba bike race calendar. “When you face a loss like that, you need to feel like you are a part of a community.

Cancelling the race was not an option,” Peter said.

The race went off without a hitch but Monday morning inevitably came around and the reality of the situation started to sink in. Where do you go when your world suddenly gets turned upside down? Do you simply start the rebuilding process when you’ve just come out of the hardest five years of your life? He wasn’t left pondering that question for long, by mid-morning the phone was ringing off the hook. Peter got calls from dozens of local businesses wanting to support and encourage him to keep going.

They saw the value in what a small business like Peter’s shop provided for the community. By afternoon, the local CO-OP had offered him a space to use til he was on his feet. Other businesses started a Go Fund Me campaign that raised an unexpected amount of money to help with the rebuilding process. The community rallied around Country Cycle, proving that the Pembina Valley is all about lifting each other up, especially in the hard times.

With the opportunity to rebuild, Peter partnered with a local designer to create a space that felt like the bike shops he had seen and experienced around the world. It’s a dream space for Peter. “When you come in, it’s an experience,” he says. For new bikers or

those interested in starting this hobby, they can come in and have all of their questions answered in one place, including where to ride. For those already passionate about biking, they can get the quality bikes and parts they need to continue their hobby.

With Covid changing the way the bike shop could operate, an ecommerce site was created and online shopping became an option. “I think this is a great way to expand beyond our local market. It’s amazing how many Canadians have found us online during this pandemic,” says Peter. It’s also his hope to draw bikers from outside our local communities. The Morden Lake Trail, Tinker Creek and Thorn Hill are all trails offering beauty that rivals places Peter has been to around the world. “We live in one of the major bread baskets of the world and our landscape is beautiful,” he shares. “We have amazing trails right in our backyard!”

Biking is for everyone. Whether your kids need a bike or you need one to keep up with them, maybe you want to exercise in a fun way or just be able to cruise around, there is a perfect bike for each activity. In a year where the world and our community has been filled with angst, stress and hard things, everyone could use some peace and calm. To feel the joy of the wind in our hair and the fresh air bringing that life we have been letting pass us by. Peter shares why he bikes, “When you get on a bike, you forget all the things that are divisive and hard in the world. You get some perspective and you just get to feel like a kid again.” Happy Trails.

Picture this: 25+ temps, sitting on a lounger, toes in the sand, drink in hand (the contents of said drink can be left to your imagination), and the only worry on your mind is where to pick up take-out for dinner. That is pretty close to my definition of paradise, whether it’s in Manitoba, Mexico, or one of my favourite spots south of the border. I will be aiming to fit as many days like that into my summer as possible – this summer though, Manitoba beaches will have to do. Often that leads into an evening of spending time around a campfire with people I love and I really couldn’t ask for anything more. As I picture this scene in my head, my heart explodes with gratitude.

Things will never be perfect, plain and simple. If that is your goal, you will never be satisfied. Can things be better? Sure. There is nothing wrong with striving for better, but where you might run into trouble is when better is all you think about. That mindset will ruin every good thought you have and

leave you feeling bitter. I can’t think of a worse or more unhappy place to be than dwelling in resentment and dissatisfaction. Let’s choose not to.

Usually, I try to connect this First Word to some form of current events, but to be honest, I’m taking a break from those for the time being – you could call it a summer vacation for my brain (and sanity).

The world, and all its problems, will still be there when I resurface but I believe it’s important to take some time just to focus on what is immediately around you.

Choosing gratitude does not mean being complacent, it doesn’t mean forgetting, and it certainly doesn’t mean plastering on a fake smile every day. Gratitude just allows you to see what is there rather than what is not. I urge you to look closer, to see what is there.

Happy Summer, friends! Give yourself permission to take a break and soak up this season that we have so little time with.

Through the generations, plants have provided for humanity. They have supplied the human body with the oxygen and fuel that it needs to thrive.

We do not expect different plant varieties to grow at the same rate or under the same conditions. Rehabilitation is the same way. People progress at different speeds and under a variety of treatment plans. Each body is unique and each body will progress at its own rate.

Now when we think of injury rehabilitation, plants do not generally come to mind.

However, they may provide us with some valuable lessons to benefit our physical health.

PLANTS REALIZE THAT SMALL GROWTH IS STILL GROWTH.

PLANTS ARE ADAPTABLE. Plants come to life in the spring, soaking up the sunlight to make and store food. By the end of the season, they become frugal with their resources to withstand the harshness of winter. It is this ability to adapt with changing seasons that allows the plants to thrive. Like plants, the human body has an equal ability to prosper through change.

If you stare at a saplings progress from one day to the next, it is difficult to note any change at all. However, if you find this same young tree one year later, the change is staggering. Small changes over time produce growth.

In rehabilitation, changes can be difficult to notice.

However, even if it is moving a bit more, lifting a heavier weight, or walking a bit farther, these small victories are the building blocks of success. Your physiotherapist will be sure to celebrate these incremental achievements with you!

With injury, the body may have to recalibrate but it can adapt. Broken bones can heal. Weakened muscles can get stronger. Rehabilitating an injury through physiotherapy illustrates the body’s amazing capability to adjust and accept new challenges.

PLANTS ALLOW THEIR STRUGGLES TO MAKE THEM STRONGER. When a tree is thrashed by relentless winds, it digs in its heels and grows thicker roots and a more robust trunk.

Likewise, when an injury hammers the body, it also can come back stronger and sturdier. Rehabilitation is an opportunity to build a firmer foundation for a healthier future.

As the sun moves across the sky, plants turn to face the sun and take in its bright rays. Nourishing the body with the energy that comes with a positive attitude has equal benefits in rehabilitation.

A positive outlook can aid the body’s healing process.

In fact, it has been demonstrated to reduce length of recovery and improve overall outcome!

Plants need occasional pruning. Dead branches cause extra stress to a plant and hinder vitality. Once they are removed, more energy and nutrients can allow the rest of the plant to flourish.

ede-Made Noodles is building the foundations for the start of a noodle empire in Western Canada.

Originally founded in 1998 by Pete and Eva Redekop in a garage near Plum Coulee, the family started Rede-Made Noodles (a catchy play on words for ‘Redekop made noodles’) simply because they kept receiving requests for their homemade pasta. Each year the family would make a little extra for family and friends who wanted to buy noodles instead of undergoing the labour-intensive process of making homemade noodles and the flour mess that comes with it.

The two-car garage was sectioned off and inspected by food and safety before commercial production began. Three short years later, Rede-Made outgrew

their humble beginnings and built a 1,200 sq. ft. shop in Winkler near Superstore. In another four years, they expanded again to a 4,000 sq. ft. facility on George Ave. Current owners Abe & Denita Fehr and parents Dave and Tina Fehr would buy the business in 2012.

While Fehr says he never had the ‘noodle dream’ (a rite of passage from the animated movie, Kung-Fu Panda, a subconscious sign that an apprentice was ready to take on the family noodle business), Fehr did see how his experience in manufacturing and production, as well as a restauranteur, had uniquely qualified him for operating Rede-Made Noodles.

“I had no idea I would end up in the food industry,

though in high school I worked at the local Dairy Queen, and was a supervisor there for pretty much all of high school, running the place 3-4 evenings a week.

Then, straight after graduation, I started at Lode King Industries, right at the bottom, cleaning up or whatever needed doing, and I worked my way up until I was team leader of 30-40 guys. I did that for 12 years, but I like a challenge and eventually I didn’t see any room for advancement, other than guys retiring from key positions.”

Looking for his next career, Fehr says his dad called one day wondering if he’d be interested in buying a restaurant. While many would consider being an entrepreneur the same as “being your own boss,” he sees it as “every customer is your boss.”

“Sure, it does come with perks, but really if you own a business, you just have a lot more bosses. Every customer that walks in the door is your boss that you’re trying to serve to the best of your ability.”

However, little did he know, soon noodle and perogy customers across Canada would become some of his many bosses.

“My parents knew the Redekops from way back, and at that time we actually owned and operated Del Rios Restaurant here in Winkler. We always made our own soup noodles, but whenever our noodle machine would break, we’d buy parts from Rede-Made,” he says. “Eventually they were looking to get out of the business, so we decided to jump in.”

“I didn’t have the ‘noodle dream’, but it was a healthy business with a great customer base, so we decided to buy it.”

While a “handful of years younger,” Fehr says they initially attempted to run both the restaurant and the growing noodle factory. However, two years later he began to see the strain taking a toll on himself and his family.

“I think I lasted about a year and a half, not quite two years, and I was just on a road to burnout. My family wanted to see more of me, and I wanted to see more of my wife and two kids, so we decided to sell the restaurant.”

Now, freed up to focus entirely on Rede-Made Noodles, Fehr says they began looking at how to grow the brand beyond Southern Manitoba.

In 2016, Rede-Made launched their first perogy line and was blown away by the response. To keep up with demand, they added a 2,400 sq. ft. expansion.

“Noodles are a cyclical product. We find the majority of product is sold from September to March. Once you hit that first zero-degree day, it seems like everyone wants to eat noodle soup.

Then, when you hit minus 15 degrees you hit another spike. When you get a stretch of minus 30 then you can barely keep up… just seems like the colder it gets, the more people look forward to a bowl of soup,” Fehr explains. “However, in summertime there’s more camping and outdoor cooking, so it’s very cyclical. That’s why we added perogies, to fill out those production days in the summer.”

Along with the new product, Fehr also had his eyes on growing beyond the borders of Southern Manitoba.

“They had their noodles in a lot of stores and restaurants already, but my vision was to get into a grocery chain and get into their warehouses and distribution.”

Originally, Fehr set his sights on Federated Co-op, gaining coveted shelf space across Western Canada Coop stores.

However, with any expansion, there comes a risk. First, solving the logistics of providing a huge amount of product to stock 300 grocery stores on top of their current demand. At the time, Rede-Made was in almost all the (close to 20) Co-op stores in Manitoba and servicing over 200 stores. Listing fees, special packaging, meeting minimum sell through requirements, and everything else that comes along with getting into a large company’s distribution channel, comes with risk, and for a small company to take a risk of fifty to one hundred thousand dollars was just too big.

“We know our market in Southern Manitoba, but we didn’t really know how Edmonton, Saskatoon, and all the other cities/towns would respond.”

With these questions in his mind, Fehr received a call from Federated Co-op’s head buyer in Saskatoon, would Rede-Made Noodles be interested in supplying product for their private label noodles?

Gone were the listing fees, instead, they would provide the noodles for Co-op’s in house ‘Pure’ brand, thanks to Rede-Made’s wholesome, natural ingredients.

“One of the main reasons they wanted Rede-Made was for the ‘Pure’ label. On our ingredients’ list, there’s nothing you can’t pronounce. Just flour, whole eggs, and salt. That’s what they want for the ‘Pure’ label, nothing artificial or chemicals you can’t pronounce.”

Fehr notes they accepted in April 2020 and shipped the first load in October 2020.

“It was a bit of a negotiation process, trying to make a deal that worked for them and for us, and designing new packaging with their team. The stores that carried our brand will continue to carry Rede-Made, alongside the Co-op brand, almost side by side,” he explains. “But this option really took all of that risk out of the equation for us. This got us into Western Canada.”

Since then, they’ve been busy filling orders, and expect to be able to keep up with demand thanks to their recent expansion.

While making new fans out West, Fehr says they do receive orders from all over North America, from customers in California, Alabama and Colorado.

When asked about their secret, Rede-Made recipe, Fehr says there’s no decades old parchment locked away in a vault or closely guarded spices.

“It’s just flour, salt, eggs and water, we just need to have the right mixture. The reason the business got started in the first place, and the reason we’re still in business, is people are very busy,” Fehr explains. “People just don’t have time to make their own noodles, it’s extra work and things can get quite messy because you get flour everywhere. And they take a while to dry, so that’s the problem we’re solving; you don’t have the mess in your house, and you don’t have to do the work.”

Instead, customers simply pop noodles or perogies into a boiling pot of water and have supper in minutes.

However, while there’s no coveted recipe or secret sauce, it doesn’t mean Rede-Made doesn’t have an edge over the competition; the team of experienced grandmas that hand pinch every perogy that leaves their plant. While there are machines that could put out hundreds of perogies an hour, Fehr says they’re vulnerable to jamming and often producers are forced to change the consistency of their mixture to compensate. In short, they could greatly increase production if they were willing to fundamentally change their perogies.

“There’s a lot of extra ingredients other companies have to put into their mixture in order for the machines to be able to handle it and it doesn’t get clogged up, and many of those ingredients have names you can’t pronounce, so we’d have a completely different product. Instead, we like to serve the niche market, where people want something that’s as close to homemade as possible.”

To Fehr, that goal of homemade goodness is

non-negotiable. Instead, their team of “grandmas” as they’re lovingly referred to, (there are younger members as well) carefully and expertly hand shape their cottage cheese pockets and preserve the “just like Grandma’s” motto.

Is the handcrafted product worth the price? Fehr certainly believes so and hopes their growing customers do too.

And despite the attention to detail, he says they’re still able to create up to 10,000 perogies a day.

But more than their business success, for Fehr the best part is building a team that enjoys working together.

“One of the most rewarding things I would say, is sitting in my office and hearing the laughter and friendly banter of the employees interacting with each other, hearing that all the way from here with all the machines running is always a highlight,” he says. “And when we have coffee break, sometimes they’ll apologize for getting a bit rowdy and say they didn’t mean to disturb me, but it’s like no, you just keep going, that’s a very good noise to hear. People laughing and joking around with each other means they’re getting along.”

For the most part, Fehr says he doesn’t even really consider himself the boss, “I’m just one of the team members, I may have a different role, but I can’t make this place run without them. Everything works much better when everybody is working in their role together as a team.”

And every time they purchase a new machine, Fehr says he has to be careful not to assume, “Ok, this is going to solve all our problems, and everything will be so efficient.”

“Because I’m not the one using that machine every day… one machine I tried and tried to get working and finally I just said, “I’m just gonna leave it with you.” And I came back an hour later and they had got it all figured

out, whereas I sat there for half a day trying to get it to work. It just takes a different set of eyes and a new perspective. I’m looking at things strictly for efficiency, but for someone else, it’s how this is going to fit into my day-to-day life.”

“Sometimes, as a business owner, you just have to get out of your staff’s way,” he says.

After first purchasing the business, one of the senior staff took him aside and suggested, “if you bring us the flour and the eggs, we’ll make the noodles. That’s all you have to do, go out and sell noodles, don’t worry about us here, as long as we have eggs and flour.”

“It’s become a kind of standing joke, but I truly believe sometimes you just have to get out of the way, but make sure your team has the tools they need and feel supported and trusted.”

And looking back across his working life, the common denominator between his multiple careers remains his ability to problem solve and build up teams.

“I definitely enjoy working with people, and I like solving puzzles. For us here, it’s always looking at improving and making the process more efficient. So you’ll get a bigger mixer so you can mix more at a time, but then it just moves the bottleneck to the next station. So, you’re just moving down the line problem solving and figuring things out, how we can improve and how we can make things safer for employees.”

The other highlight is receiving phone calls from customers. Recently, Fehr heard from an 84-year-old grandmother from Winnipeg. She had been buying Rede-Made Noodles for as long as she could remember.

However, she had just been found out. After years of putting her Rede-Made Noodles into her Tupperware containers, she’d forgotten to put one of the bags away and she’d been found out by her children and grandchildren.

“She had everyone believing she was making noodles from scratch, after all these years she forgot to dump

T

he next generation is guiding Border View Electric through its fourth decade of service.

Despite the challenge of taking the reins of a rapidly growing company, new owners and long-time employees Kevin Wall and Eric Unrau say very few challenges can shake them after helping navigate their father and uncle’s electrical service business through 2017, one of the most difficult and emotional years the company and its people may ever know.

Started in 1988, the company has been providing electrical service to the Pembina Valley for over 30 years. Founded by two partners without any employees, Border View Electric has grown to be one of the largest electrical contractors in the region with a staff of 25.

It was on a frosty January morning in 1989 that local electricians Jake Dyck and Stan Wall first took up shop in a small rented space on Main St. in Winkler.

Despite the humble beginnings, Jake and Stan quickly put their combined 20 years of experience to work, earning their place in the local electrical industry and building relationships that have served them well in the commercial, residential, agricultural and industrial sectors. The community is dotted with their handiwork including the local credit union, manufacturing facilities,

library, churches and schools.

No job was too small, as they put in the long hard hours of young entrepreneurs. Three years later, they would hire their first employee and in 1991, their growing business necessitated the use of a larger shop. Then in 1996, the partners built their ideal headquarters at 399 Manitoba Rd. The 4000 sq. ft. home has served them well and remains their headquarters today, only adding a 1,000 sq. ft. expansion in 2014.

Now, Stan’s son Kevin, together with Eric, Jake’s nephew, have shouldered the responsibility of shepherding the company their father and uncle built 33 years ago as young men themselves.

However, the responsibility of ownership was one the duo had once planned on sharing with another, the late John Friesen.

Together with John, Eric and Kevin bought into the business in 2013.

However, in early 2017 with Stan taking time off for a surgery, and the company in the midst of its largest contract yet, tragedy struck.

ELECTRIC LTD On February 9 at 8:50 p.m RCMP received word of an overdue aircraft that left St. Andrews Airport just after 6:30 p.m, but never reached its destination of Winkler.

Police and the Canadian Armed Forces Search and Rescue team found the wreckage shortly after 1:00 a.m near Brunkild. The accident had claimed the life of John, 41, and another Winkler business owner, Art Petkau.

The business community was devastated, and mourned alongside Border View and the Friesen and Petkau families.

Thankfully, both next generation partners had a long history with the company. For Kevin, his beginnings with Border View began in 1996 after graduation.

However, he moved to Winnipeg to finish his apprenticeship before moving back to Winkler in 2004 to start a family. His time in the city gave him new experiences with large commercial projects, a perspective he was able to bring back to the family business in Winkler.

Kevin explains John was close with many of the guys on staff, and was a mentor for both him and Eric.

His legacy is embedded into the fabric of the manufacturing hub of Winkler and surrounding area, Kevin adds, with his signature on inspection sheets in shops and factories all over the community.

“We learned a lot from John, he was a few years older than us, and he was kind of our leader as we came up through the apprenticeship programs. It was a big loss.”

John’s passing was not only the loss of a dear friend, but

“We had to step up and learn that side of the business pretty quick,” Kevin says. “There was a lot of weight on the two of us. So that was kind of the starting point for us taking on the business.”

“Right after high school, when I started, it was a job. And dad was pretty hard working. And so, he put me to work, that’s how I started,” he explains. “It was something that I never really wanted to do, because I saw how much effort he put into it. And he was not often home. So, I wasn’t sure if it was something I wanted to get into at the time. But you know, I needed a job, started working,

and as I learned the trade it became more interesting.

As I gained experience in electrical, I probably was more interested in the business side of it. I became an electrician so that I could get into this role.”

For Eric, his journey began in 2000, beginning in the co-op education program in high school.

“I like the variety of it, there was such a wide variety of things that we could do every day was different. I enjoyed that, it was challenging learning new things, pushing myself. But also a sense of accomplishment.

You have a problem that no one else can solve, and you figure it out.”

As the pair gained more experience they began to move into leadership roles and the original founders were able to build the business around the next generation of electricians and entrepreneurs. The company, too, began to expand as the surrounding communities grew and they took on increasingly larger projects, eventually securing new builds like Tabor Home and Pine Ridge Elementary.

“The key to building up a business like that is being able to financially carry a project that big, there can be a lot of costs along the way, and being a small business you can’t necessarily always do that,” Wall explains. “So that’s the first thing, Stan and Jake had built up the business to be able to do that. As well as the experience

needed to run those kind of projects. As the community grew, we were taking on larger and larger projects and gaining experience from each one.”

The duo are also childhood friends, and in a way mirror the partnership between Jake and Stan.

“We’ve known each other since we were kids, so there’s not a lot of surprises anymore,” Kevin says. “But I think we’re different enough that we complement each other.

We both have our individual strengths and weaknesses, but together, we make a great team. Eric is very patient and good at troubleshooting. He doesn’t get stumped easily, whereas my experience came from bigger commercial jobs, so we’ve been able to take our skills and transition them into the business.”

Another tenet Jake and Stan have shared with the next generation is the importance of respect.

“They always had a huge amount of respect for their customers, and being very honest and fair. You know, that’s their approach, it’s not necessarily all about the money, you make sure you provide good service, and do business honestly and fairly,” Eric says. “And that seems to get customers to keep coming back.”

“We aren’t family by blood, but we want to know what’s going on in staff members’ lives,” Kevin says.

And that interest extends to building roles around their staff member’s individual strengths.

“We want staff in areas they’re going to succeed. Not everybody is gifted in every area, but we’re going to put them where they’re skilled and find the best fit for them,” Kevin adds.

If employee retention is any indicator it’s working; many of their team have been long-time staffers.

When asked what made the Pembina Valley the perfect incubator for Border View and such a hotbed for economic growth, Eric explains it comes down to a homegrown sense of ingenuity, creativity and a “get er’ done” attitude.

“People aren’t scared of starting businesses here. We’re not afraid to take a chance. And when they do, they need buildings, that creates construction and that’s where we fit in. We’re very fortunate to have people like that in the community because that just creates work for other people. A lot of our customers would’ve started out that way.”

Kevin says they’ve been especially blessed to have been given a business with such strong foundations.

“Stan and Jake worked really hard at it, when they started they had to go out and find customers and develop relationships, now customers are coming to us,” Eric says. “We learned from them how to do it, from their character, their work ethic, and their sacrifices.”

Looking to the future, Kevin explains the goal is to continue to grow with the community into the next 30 years, while holding on to the values and characteristics that made Border View Electric into the company it is today.

“We don’t necessarily aspire to be the biggest company in Southern Manitoba, we just want to serve our customers well, that’s what it comes down to,” Eric says.

With those values and the support of their father and uncle, Kevin and Eric move forward, remembering the past, holding up the legacy of their mentor John, and continue the work of bringing light and electricity to the Pembina Valley.

COVER

RV tire covers are a simple way to protect your tires. Covering your tires will lengthen their lifespan, provide protection from extreme heat and cold, help provide blowout prevention and will protect wheels from rust. You put good money into your tires, why not protect that investment?

AIR

Do not go anywhere without first checking the air pressure of your RV or trailer tires. If the pressure is too low when you are driving, your tires can overheat and lead to a blowout. If the pressure is too high, your tires will wear unevenly and need to be replaced sooner.

CHOOSING THE CORRECT SHEEN FOR YOUR PROJECT What is sheen...it is the amount of gloss level in your paint or clear coat finish. Terms often used to express sheen in the paint industry are: flat, matte, eggshell, pearl, low lustre, satin, semi gloss, soft gloss and high gloss.

Typically, the higher the sheen the more washable the paint finish... however, Benjamin Moore has three products that challenge that standard. Benjamin Moore Aura Matte and Regal Ulti-Matte are certainly forerunners; however, Scuff-x Matte is a game changer.

Though not a dead flat finish, it certainly goes on very low in sheen with exceptional wipe ability especially for walls. Regal Ulti-Matte on a ceiling will offer exceptional hide with gentle wipe ability. So, if wash ability is so very important, why would you not just select a glossy finish? Everyone must consider that though a shinier surface is easier to wipe and clean, the shinier surface will also show

more imperfections. Here lies the challenge of finding the balance of beauty versus function.

Rule of thumb...the higher the sheen level of your coating finish, the easier to wipe and clean. The lower the sheen the less ability to wipe and clean.

So then why would anyone choose a flat finish? The lower the sheen, the easier it is to do touch ups. Surfaces with many imperfections will always look better when applying a flat/ matte finish. Large surface areas, especially ceilings, are applied in flat finishes to allow for better touch-ups and seamless looks.

Burnishing of a matte finish is all too common. Most matte (flat) finishes are not wipeable, however a quick tip is to always add a squirt of liquid hand soap to your water, no matter the finish, to lessen friction to your cleaning solution.

FRUIT ‘N MO

When you hear a business name like LG Transport and Fruit ‘N More you might think of trucking and groceries and move on with your day, but the reality is a whole lot deeper and worthy of your time.

This kind of connection speaks to the interwoven nature of community and relationship in our region – two things the Giesbrechts believe strongly in and thank for their success.

The key to this depth lies in the letters LG...

Lawrence Giesbrecht. The letters point to a man, and the man points to a family business that is three generations deep and working on the fourth.

Lawrence and his wife Margaret’s sons Al and Scott are a big part of the family business and have been since they could pick up a watermelon.

“Our whole business is all based on relationships,” says Alan Giesbrecht as Scott and Andy nod in agreement. “That’s all. That’s everything. Everything we do is relationship and relationship is important.”

It makes sense. The businesses are more than just about jobs…they’re about people and relationships.

Relationship is how the family business first got its big boost. Relationship and a willingness to take a risk.

There are a lot of Giesbrechts in the area but these are locally known as the “watermelon people”.

Anyone who loves watermelon (practically everyone around here) has probably crossed paths with the Giesbrechts directly or indirectly either in person at the store on 299 1st Street in Winkler, nestled between Albert Street and George Avenue; or through some other local produce retailer they sell to.

The roots of the business go back to 1966 when Lawrence started trucking. Having grown up on a farm and living in a farming and agricultural community, Lawrence decided to take up trucking to transport produce – potatoes back in the day.

Eventually in 1974 he struck out on his own and

started LG Trucking (now LG Transport). Giesbrecht would move produce like potatoes across the country to British Columbia. As anyone in the transport business knows, you are always looking for the next load. You don’t want to be driving anywhere empty.

It was this practice that led Giesbrecht from a trip to B.C. down to El Paso, Texas where a chance conversation in a coffee shop would spark the future of these successful local businesses.

“Somebody talked him into taking a load of apples from B.C. to El Paso,” says Al. “He was sitting in a

coffee shop in Texas where he met some guy that said his brother grew watermelons.”

Well, Lawrence knew the local appetite for watermelon and seeing an opportunity to head back to Manitoba with a full load, he arranged to meet the watermelon farmer and struck up a deal. He didn’t have the money to pay upfront for the produce but the farmer saw something in Giesbrecht he trusted and let him have it on credit. Before too long, the watermelon seed was planted for what would become Fruit ‘N More and a growing LG Transport.

It was his friendly, trustworthy, relational nature that led to Lawrence securing that first load. Not long after, a similar business from Gretna closed and Giesbrecht bought their scale and set about the business of developing the market for produce sales as a natural companion to the transport business.

“If you ever went to the bank with a financial plan or business plan like this, they would probably say it just doesn’t seem like it should work,” said Al. “But it does work.”

It works because it’s all about heart. LG Transport and Fruit ‘N More are built on trust, service, community and relationships. All keys to the family business growing and developing to where it’s at today.

The Giesbrecht family credits a lot of their success to the community support they’ve always had, something they work hard to maintain with service and quality. In fact, up to 10 percent of their produce often doesn’t make it to the store floor for sale if it doesn’t meet their high standards.

With the watermelon business running solid in the summer months, the ongoing relationships that started in Texas in the 70s began to grow. By the 80s, it lead to additional loads of Texas citrus fruit in the winter.

Eventually, grapefruit, oranges and pineapples made their way onto the list; all of which was available in the transport garage on 1st Street.

Eventually, in 2009 the Fruit ‘N More store we’ve become familiar with was built and the growth continued.

As the business grew and the family grew and new generations became involved, what becomes apparent is that the business is an extension of that family and the values they hold dear are woven into it and taught through it.

When asked what one word defines the business more than any other Andy is quick to speak up - “Integrity,” he says without missing a beat. “Integrity would be the word that has got us as far as we are now.”

“When you have product that’s not perfect it’s just not good enough,” says Al. “We grade our product thoroughly so that our customers get the best product – it’s very important to us.”

And so, over the years, come rain or shine the Giesbrecht family, store manager Helen Bannman, and employees have worked to make sure they are able to offer the best products they can to the local community. The response to this level of customer service makes the Giesbrechts want to work hard. They often marvel at how dedicated and committed their customers are, considering all the other larger options they have. “The support that we actually get for just being the little, local guy is incredible,” they say.

Andy and Scott were both quick to point that during construction on 1st Street there were worries about whether business would drop off because of how hard it was to get to the store. It turns out their customers were more than dedicated enough to make it work and they never really noticed a difference.

While the interview is progressing, these words ring true of the Giesbrecht family – integrity, service, relationship, community and family.

Family is on the Giesbrecht’s minds a lot lately. Family matriarch Margaret Giesbrecht, known as Watermelon Margaret to many for her enthusiasm with customers in the business, recently passed away. Margaret is Lawrence’s wife, Al and Scott’s mother and Andy’s grandma.

They apologize for how things related to her passing had to delay the interview and in this they demonstrate another key family attribute that they never actually mention – humility.

Margaret is remembered fondly, although remembered is the wrong word. Her passing is so recent that she is still present to them and this is how they speak of her.

“I don’t think you’d be able to find anybody who would know more about watermelons in Western Canada than my mom, right,” says Al. “Well, that’s a good challenge right there.”

They speak of her as being critical to their success and key to corralling friends and family to help unload watermelon from recently arrived trucks. Back in the day those trucks were loaded full of watermelons stacked one on top of the other – no crates, just anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 watermelons on straw (and the occasional scorpion or black widow hitchhiker). It could take an hour or more just to unload them one at a time.

“I remember being at a get-together,” recalled Scott.

“Mum would call for help and friends, family… everyone would come to lend a hand.”

You would think after spending years dedicated to watermelon transport (among other things) that it would be easy to guess their favourite fruit, right? Wrong.

When asked the question answers come quick and without a lot of thought.

Nowadays the loads come 35 watermelons to a bin and the bins can be removed by forklift which makes unloading far easier but they still have to be

For Al, the obvious choice is pineapple. For Scott, it’s strawberries and for Andy, it’s peaches. A great mix

really and maybe not too big a surprise if you’ve been part of a business that’s moved 60 million pounds of watermelon over the years.

It turns out when your life is defined by things like watermelon you have to find other areas to focus on sometimes. For Scott, that means being a part of the pit crew on the drag racing scene because there’s nothing he likes more than repairing and maintaining things. For Al and Andy, they like to spend time on the dirt track and dirt bike scenes. The adrenaline and fast-paced atmosphere are great for clearing the head and having a little fun away from work.

“It’s nice to work with family but it’s nice to have something outside of business to be able to relax a bit,” says Andy.

From a quick decision to carry a load of watermelons, the business has come a long way. The Giesbrechts will tell you that there is a lot more than watermelon on the shelves. Today, you could go to Fruit ‘N More and find locally sourced products like rhubarb and various meat products like sausage, beef and pork.

Then there’s mangos, habanero peppers, aloe vera, cabbage, blueberries, apples, bananas, pears, onions, cucumbers and the list goes ever on.

While Fruit ‘N More continues to thrive, LG Transport is right there with it as it moves product for local businesses like Lode King and has grown from one owner-operated truck to todays 16. As much as the Giesbrechts have credited the value of honesty, service and the importance of the support they have received from the local community for their success, they are adamant that community is more than individuals but also the community of Winkler businesses working together.

“We do way better working together with other businesses than against them,” says Al. “Sunny Day sells our stuff and we’ve we sold their stuff. It’s all local small stores working together like a community. The big guys are always trying to run you over but with the local support you succeed.”

This is a big part of the reason they have strived to work with, and develop, locally sourced products – it’s all part of saying thank you for the help they’ve received over the years from other local businesses. Anyone could approach them with product and they would consider it for shipping or for the store.

Part of living and doing business in Winkler and the region is learning to adapt to change. Over the years Winkler has become one of the fastest growing communities in Canada. Immigration has brought incredible diversity as people from all over the world have come to make the region their new home.

With this diversity in people comes a new and diverse palate. New clients come in looking for new things and the Giesbrechts work hard to be able to offer whatever is needed be it ox tail, cow tongue, gluten free or organic options and any number of other requests.

It would have been easy to stick to watermelons and small-scale hauling but this just isn’t the Giesbrecht way. As they saw opportunity and needs to meet, they simply stepped out and met them head-on. They learned this from Lawrence and Margaret and continue to weave it into the business and new generations.

When asked to look to the future and talk a bit about where LG Transport and Fruit ‘N More could go it is Andy again who speaks up quickly.

“I think it will go as far as we let it,” he says. “The sky’s the limit you know. You’re limited by your own willingness to take it to where you want it to go.”

With the interview finished, we say our goodbyes and the Giesbrechts – Al, Scott and Andy, go back to where they’re most comfortable. They go back to family, to community, and to growing and running the businesses Lawrence and Margaret started - the places where they learned what matters most – integrity, service, and relationship.

The Giesbrechts and future generations of the Giesbrecht family look forward to serving this Community they call home for many years to come.

Spending a week at the cottage, going fishing or sailing, or just having fun in your backyard pool can make for a great summer. But water needs to be treated with respect or accidents can happen. By paying attention to certain safety rules and by knowing what to do in case of an emergency, you will greatly reduce your risk of accidents.

Unless your pool is deep enough, don’t allow diving.

Water should be at least 9 feet (2.7 metres) deep to permit diving from the poolside, and at least 12 feet (3.7 metres) deep if there’s a diving board.

Every year, we hear tragic stories of children who escape even watchful eyes and drown in a swimming pool, lake, or river. The sad part is that most of these accidents could have been prevented if certain safety precautions had been followed. These include:

If you’re having a party, make one adult responsible for the kids and the water area. Accidents have happened when people thought others were watching the children.

Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

People who like to dive find lakes and swimming very tempting, but diving can be dangerous unless the area is deep enough. A dive in water that’s too shallow can result in a broken neck or other serious injuries. Don’t assume that an area is safe, even if it’s been so in the past. Water levels in rivers and lakes can change, so always check first.

To dive safely, you need a minimum of 9 feet of clear, unobstructed water – more if you’re diving from an elevated position.

Jump in feet first before any diving to check it out and make sure it’s okay.

If you enjoy boating, don’t forget your life jackets – and wear them.

A boat can flip for many reasons, but if you’re prepared, you’ll probably be safe. Having a life jacket under the seats won’t prevent you from drowning.

A Glimpse into Genesis House, local women’s shelter When a woman is facing an abusive situation, Genesis House is the place she can go for help. Leaving an abusive home is often scary and complicated and something done with support and help from both loved ones and the community. With one in four women being abused, there is a great need for a safe place to recover and make decisions for these women and also ongoing care and help as they get back on their feet.

Abuse is the use of, or threat to use, physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, psychological, financial or spiritual means to force or coerce someone into doing what they don’t want to do, to maintain control in the relationship. If you or someone you know is being abused or you suspect abuse, please call the crisis line at 1-877-977-0007 to speak to a crisis worker who can offer guidance and next steps.

Genesis House was founded 36 years ago as a part of the support network for women being abused in the South Central Manitoba area. It provides shelter, counseling, classes, advocacy and support. With rooms available for when women need safety, the staff and volunteers are on call 24/7 with someone always there to help or listen.

When entering Genesis House, a woman and her children may feel unsure of what to expect. “Part of feeling safe is feeling clean” shares Executive Director

Angela Braun, “The first few days in shelter are about basic needs. Eating, sleeping, showering and if you need anything medical wise.” The average stay is 2 weeks and many women stay longer as they make significant changes in their lives. There is no pressure for women to make a decision as they process the trauma they are escaping from. Each woman in the shelter has their own room shared with their children.

The rooms are cozy, and beds are often made with quilts donated by community. Meals are prepared together and shared in the common living space. As women recover, they can be a part of helping the house function and stay clean and running.

Connecting and time to enjoy their children is celebrated and encouraged. An on site counselor is available to help children process and feel safe.

The first step in getting help if you are in an abusive situation is to become aware that you are being abused.

Often women have been so put down that they don’t even believe themselves when it is happening to them.

Abuse can be done in many ways that can sometimes be hard to identify, so if you think it may be happening to you, the next step would be to call the crisis line 1-877-977-0007 and talk to a worker at the shelter.

They can help you process what to do next and how to take the steps needed. Once you’ve talked to the crisis worker, who is on call 24/7 to help you, they will help

get you to safety or decide what your plan should be.

No one will know you are there unless you tell them.

You can trust the workers and volunteers at Genesis House to keep your story confidential and there is no judgement or shame for anyone they come in contact with. With counseling for you, and any children you may have, there is a listening ear to hear your story and help you sort out your feelings and fears in order to make informed choices.

If you are concerned someone you know is being abused, you can also call the crisis line and get advice from the crisis workers, but they do need to speak to the actual woman involved to be able to help them in person. Other ways to help someone in trouble include giving moral support, show her you believe her and reassure her she is not to blame. You can direct her to the Genesis House website or share the crisis number with her. Share Genesis House’s social media posts.

Maybe someone who needs it will see it. Talk about Genesis House with your friends and family. Being a supportive person who people feel safe sharing with is a key way to help someone in an abusive situation.

Wiebe was born in Russia to John N. Wiebe, a ‘bone-setter’ by trade, like Nick’s grandfather.

As a child, Wiebe travelled with his family from Russia in 1926, narrowly escaping before borders were closed on the heels of revolution. Along with eight brothers and sisters, the Wiebe family made their way through Germany, to England and eventually boarded a ship destined for Canada.

rief remains a universal and mysterious part of being human. But for the Directors of Wiebe Funeral Homes Ltd., the grief of their friends and neighbours means a solemn promise to maintain a 72 year legacy of compassion.

In the late 1940’s, the small Mennonite community of Winkler did not have access to modern funeral services. The only means of preservation prior to burial was fabric wrapping and ice. This added another hardship to families already beset with trials as many of them lost parents and siblings to illness and poor nutrition.

Nick’s brother Hank, who was born on route between England and Canada, would eventually become his right-hand man in the family business.

Nick enlisted with the RCAF in Brampton, Ontario as Canada entered the second World War. He served as a wireless air gunner, radioing in-coming planes. However, he was later honourably discharged after being injured in a flare gun accident. After his recovery, Nick

moved to Toronto and drove ambulances. Oftentimes he would be routed directly to a local funeral home. It happened so often the staff at Sherrin’s Funeral Home got to know Nick and eventually encouraged him to take an open apprenticeship position.

It was in 1947 that he began a four decade career in the funeral business, receiving his embalmers’ license in 1948 from the Banting Institute, Humber College.

It was the following year that Nick received a phone call that would change his life. His mother, Sarah, had died in Winkler.

In 1949, Nick and his wife Lorraine packed up everything they owned and moved to Winkler, borrowing $750 to buy a small building, a 1939 Henney Packard Hearse, and some basic equipment like a refrigeration unit, the same unit that was eventually sold to a local hotel where it cooled drinks for many years afterwards.

The original Wiebe Funeral Home building was moved from Main Street to Nick’s father John’s property on 4th Street and would go on to serve the community until 1960 when the existing funeral home was built on 8th Street.

Seeing the further need in the surrounding regions, Nick partnered with brother Hank to oversee funeral services in the Altona area beginning in 1951. Three years later Nick would buy out the funeral home in Morden and complete his territory of service. In those years, the Winkler funeral home received 30-40 calls each year, a few less in Morden, and a handful from the Altona area. In 1961, Nick’s brother John expressed interest in opening a funeral service and received training from Nick before starting Wiebe Funeral Home in Morris which operated independently and was eventually taken over by John’s son, Jeff.

In 1963, Nick realized a second dream, moving his Morden location from downtown to the funeral chapel on the hill on the west edge of town.

In 1971, Nick’s son Rick started full-time and worked alongside his dad until Nick retired in the mid-1980’s.

In total, Nick worked as a funeral director for more than 40 years.

Wiebe would eventually oversee the three funeral homes before later selling the Altona location to his cousin Terry Wiebe.

In the 1990’s Rick Wiebe hired three young men, Kiley Wilson, Joey Grenier and Jake Giesbrecht, who would eventually take over the business at his retirement in 2013.

Giesbrecht’s employment began at 23 years old. While working in a funeral home wasn’t many kids’ dream job growing up, he says it was the relational part of the job that drew him to the industry. And in a smaller centre, relationships don’t just end with the funeral.

“It began with just wanting to help people, I mean we spend those first few days after death with families. I look at it as we kind of start their grief journey together.

Those first few days are just taking a bit of a burden off the family with the details and inner workings of the funeral itself,” he explains. “We try to allow them their space and time to be with family, and they have faith in us to know everything is going to be taken care of.”

For Grenier, his work in the funeral business began in 1994, eventually joining Wiebe in 1999.

“At that point Kiley and Jake were already here, and Rick was getting older and looking to take on a lesser role in the business. Jake and Kiley were here in Winkler and Rick was looking for a guy in Morden, so I applied. I moved to Morden and the three of us pretty much from that point on worked for Rick for many years. He kind of always gave us that opening to be a part of ownership.”

Grenier explains when entering the industry, you begin an apprenticeship with a funeral home, receiving onthe-job training, along with studies in human anatomy, microbiology, as well as funeral laws and regulations.

“We study while working to get our licensing. It’s about a two year program to learn how to care and handle a deceased body, cleanliness and disinfecting,” he explains.

“And then the role of the funeral director is to arrange and conduct funerals, setting up the arrangements for the service, cemetery details… we basically walk the

family through all the steps, that’s our role.”

Now, over 20 years later, Wilson, Grenier and Giesbrecht are carrying the legacy of the Wiebe amily into the next era.

“I can’t recall if there was a specific time or event that made me think of becoming a funeral director, but I do remember attending funerals and watching our local funeral directors care for the families in a compassionate and professional manner. I was blessed to find employment with Doyle’s Funeral Home in 2005, and have truly enjoyed being able to meet and serve so many families over the years. And I have been working with Wiebe Funeral Home Altona for the last 7 years.”

“We’ve all worked together for over 20 years now, and we carry the traditions, values and reputation that the Wiebes worked so hard and so long to build,” Giesbrecht explains. “Being independent owners you know the community and the families you’re serving, and it gives us the flexibility where we don’t have to answer to anyone but ourselves, it gives us the capability to help families if there’s a true need.”

Bringing the business full circle, Terry Wiebe recently sold the Altona location back to the three owners.

Grenier notes they plan to complete a major renovation to the Altona location. Long-time funeral director, Trevor Groening will continue to operate the branch.

Groening grew up in Morden, and says from a young age

He notes the most gratifying part of his job is hearing how his work helped a family through a challenging time.

“It’s an honour to be able to walk alongside a family in the beginning of their grief journey and to assist them through the funeral process. For many families, losing a loved one can be a very difficult experience. I very much value and appreciate the trust families place in us to care for their loved one.”

“He brings a lot of experience to the table as well,” Grenier says. “During busy times, we are able to help each other out, and just continue that level of service people have come to expect.”

And having a strong connection with Wiebe Funeral Homes in Winkler and Morden can only benefit the families they serve, Groening adds. “They have a wealth of knowledge and experience that is a great resource for the Altona firm. Since the change of ownership in Altona we have undergone a major renovation to our facilities.

We hope our facility will offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere where families can feel comfortable and at home.”

Together, the owners have nearly 70 years of experience, and with that experience a deep understanding of grief and the measure of grace they can extend to those walking a difficult journey.

“We worry about the little things, the little details, and make sure those things are looked after,” Giesbrecht says. “And allow families to just focus on each other.”

Looking to the future, Giesbrecht says their goal remains the same as it has been since 1949.

“If we’ve done our job, you’ll hardly notice that we’re there,” he explains. “All the planning and hard work that goes into creating a special service, if it runs flawlessly nobody really realizes that we’re there, and that just means we’ve done our job right.”

It may not be an easy calling, as being a funeral director is not for just anyone. But for the men that have made it their life’s work at Wiebe Funeral Home, they say it’s a solemn role to play and one they’re committed to into the future in the Pembina Valley; charting a familiar path through the deep and serious valley of grief.

“Overall, I would say grief is very personal, no two people grieve the same way. You never know the loss someone is experiencing, because it’s theirs. That’s why a lot of times there’s nothing you can say because you can’t know what that loss means to someone, it’s completely unique,” Giesbrecht says. “Grief has stages, but you can’t just chop it up into specific timelines, different people go through it in different amounts of time.”

He adds, “support structures are important, but it’s just something you have to move through knowing some people get through quicker than others. It’s just something that has to happen when you’ve experienced a significant loss.”

Grenier notes even though the population has increased dramatically in the last two decades, it’s mostly been buoyed by young families, and so they haven’t felt an increase in funerals. With the variety of backgrounds, however, they’ve come to learn more about different cultures and traditions.

“We just appreciate the people living in the Pembina Valley, we appreciate their trust and confidence in us, we enjoy the community and we appreciate working with the churches, pastors and those in healthcare,” Grenier says. “We work together as a team serving families in a time of need.”

SMOKED BISON BURGER

Ingredients: • • • • • • •

1 lb ground bison 1 egg 1/2 c bread crumbs or crushed bbq chips 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp chili powder 1/4 tsp onion powder salt & pepper

Method:

1) Pre-heat smoker to 225°F. 2) Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and mix until they’re united.

3) The burgers may feel “wet,” and that’s okay. Bison meat is very lean. If it’s too wet and you can’t properly shape it—this depends on the size of egg used—simply add more bread crumbs or chips until you can mold it accordingly.

4) Shape the patties into large balls.

5) Place them on a cutting board and press them down to your desired thickness.

6) Place them on the grill and smoke for roughly 1.5 hours, or until a safe internal temperature is reached.

7) Probe the patties for temperature. It’s important to cook ground meats thoroughly. The beauty of smoking patties is that they’ll be pillow soft and flavourful when done. You should see a nice smoke ring when they are done. Do not confuse this for being undercooked.

8) Feel free to sear them over high heat on each side once complete.

Additional Tips:

• Bison burgers are excellent with BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, and red onions. Sometimes I’ll add mustard, as pictured on the right.

• Best served on a brioche bun.

SOME SIMPLE TIPS TO CARE FOR YOUR PLANTS DURING THE HOT, DRY SUMMER MONTHS TO KEEP YOUR TREES AND SHRUBS LOOKING GREAT Do not water everyday. Plants will establish better and be lower maintenance in the long term if they receive a slow, deep soak of water, enough to saturate the entire root system, once or twice a week. Frequency of watering will vary depending on the soil, sun exposure and weather; if you are unsure, dig down an inch or two, if there is moisture then you can hold off on watering for a few more days. Local water restrictions have complicated landscape watering this season, however, harvesting grey water from everyday indoor activities and natural rainfall in barrels can typically provide enough water for watering your new plants.

Mulch, placed in a 2-3” layer on top of the soil around your plants, will make a significant difference in how moisture is retained in the soil, and inhibit weed growth. Wood mulch, as it breaks down, will also feed the soil with essential nutrients.

Fertilizing will help to give your plants an extra boost to flourish and replenish some of the nutrients that may be depleted from the soil. Other soil amendments, such as sulphur, seaweed, and compost, can help condition the soil to make the nutrients more available for uptake by the plants.

Make sure to stop fertilizing in August so the plants get the signal that it is time to stop growing and think about shutting down for the winter. If a plant is still forcing new growth too late in the season, that new growth may not harden off enough to withstand the freezing winter temperatures and cause dieback.

Always be on the look out for any dead, diseased or damaged branches. These can and should be removed anytime they are noticed as they will hinder the growth and health of the plant.

Our residents enjoy the outdoors in summer, just as we all do. It has been many years since the Cottonwood Patio has seen upgrades and it is not the pleasant, peaceful space that it could be. The residents have enjoyed the wheelchair accessible lawn swings that have been placed in the other areas and now we want to place one in the Cottonwood Patio as well. A new concrete pad to replace the old bricks and some trees and other plants will make this an inviting place for residents to enjoy relaxing and reminiscing on the swing. The choir is a branch of Mennonite Curch Manitoba and is dedicated to the mission of inspiring others to worship God through music. In the nearly two decades that the choir has existed, it has sung at various Mennonite church assemblies and congregations, concerst and songfests. Central Station

As the name suggests, Central Station strives to serve as a central hub in our community, connecting residents of Winkler and the surrounding areas to one another and to the local agencies and resources available to them. Prior to opening their doors in September 2014, a group from the Winkler MB Church, with the help of an extensive local survey, recognized individuals were having a hard time navigating the system when experiencing struggles - from an unexpected change in circumstances to more complex traumas. The group shared a vision to create a space where people from all walks of life - all ages, cultures, religions and socio-economic backgrounds - could intersect and connect with one another, either over a shared meal or a shared interest. A place where people could serve and be served by one another. And when greater needs arose, the group hoped community members would feel comfortable in this collective space to ask for help and the staff would be knowledgeable and prepared to provide guidance and connections toward the appropriate and available resources.

As COVID-19 and the resulting social restrictions of the past year highlighted to many, if not all of us, people need people. Central Station was established on the foundation of Christian faith - rooted in love, respect and recognition of the innate dignity in every human being. With a staff of ten and a large, invaluable volunteer base, they seek to be some of those present and invested people for the individuals who walk through their doors. Collectively, they have staff members who are able to converse in English, High German, Low German, Russian and Spanish. This helps to alleviate the significant barrier of language when it comes to filling out forms for employment, housing and support programs, as well as helps to bridge relational connections.

Cafe 545 began as a way to foster the initial vision for intersection and connection through a free, shared community meal. Open to everyone, Cafe 545 was serving 350-400 people from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, religions and cultures on Monday nights, prior to COVID-19 restricting the ability to gather in large groups.

Community member Lyubov shares, “When we came to Canada in 2014, Joyce Bergen brought us to Cafe 545 and introduced us to something that was unknown for us: donating your time, feeding people for free, making sure everyone has been asked if they need anything. It made us think of helping others too.”

While staff and volunteers await the return of Cafe 545, Central Station continues to offer food to the community through their Easy Eats program. Similar to the meal kit subscriptions gaining popularity across the country, Easy Eats takes the hassle out of meal prep by providing ingredients and instructions for recipients to create a delicious meal at home. The meals are available with a

suggested donation of $7 for a dual portion, or $20 for a family (~8 person) portion. Further details, including ordering instructions, regarding these weekly meal kits can be found through Central Station’s Instagram (@winklercentralstation) and Facebook pages.

Central Station started small, opening their doors once a week and seeking out partnerships in the community. Today they are open five days a week, with public drop-in hours running from 9 am - 2 pm. On the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month, from 9 am - 11 am, clothing and toiletries are available through their Shine & Share Community Store.

Additionally, they collaborate with other organizations to host programs, including Southern Health’s Healthy Baby program for new and expecting moms, Regional Connections women’s cooking classes and with CW Wiebe Clinic’s “Kids in the Kitchen” program to name a few.

In the spring of 2017, their current location, 545 Industrial Drive, shared with The Bunker Youth Ministries, underwent a major renovation to accommodate the Winkler & District Food Cupboard moving into the space. Knowing the circumstances that lead to food insecurity are vast and complex, this created an opportunity for Central Station to serve breakfast on Wednesday mornings and socially connect and address the other areas individuals and families accessing the food cupboard may need support in.

Volunteer, Carol Schulz, shares, “It’s a wonderful thing when someone comes into Central Station and says, ‘I don’t need [to access the] food cupboard anymore because I’ve been working, I have a job!’ And we celebrate with them. And that’s what it’s all about... helping people get back on their feet so they can have hope for better things to come.”

Additionally, alongside CO-OP Grocery, Central Station coordinates a neighborhood bulk buying program, ensuring fresh fruits and vegetables are more affordable for families.

Available to anyone in Winkler and the surrounding communities, Better Access to Groceries (BAG) can be ordered one week prior to pick-up and customers can expect approximately $14-$16 value of fresh produce for their $10 purchase.

In January 2018, Central Station took over the property management duties for the Winkler Affordable Housing units. Seven months later, they also took on the management of Manitoba Housing units in Winkler. With 90 households in their care, Central Station is determined to do housing differently, intentional about the standard of care they provide to both the structures themselves and the tenants who call them home. By walking alongside tenants to assist in a myriad of practical needs — from navigating complex forms to budgeting and managing household finances — Central Station is committed to

building relationships and offering family support. They have put up gazebos near a number of their apartment units, as well as hosted pizza parties and barbeques, to foster healthy relationships among neighbors. Recently, they completed major renovations to Southview Apartments, providing a variety of interior and exterior updates. They have committed to a two-year timeline to do likewise renovations to all the properties in their care. Their attention to these projects is driven by a desire to ensure the homes are truly that — a home; a place of dignity and sense of wellbeing for the individuals and families who live there.

Rather than duplicate services provided in the area, a key pillar of Central Station’s vision is to invest in generating trust and partnership with local agencies. They work to actively identify and remove barriers to reveal options to their community members. A key component to ensuring this vision becomes a reality is through the Community Care Program.

Following the City of Winkler’s Safe Communities Initiative, it was determined that there was a need in our community for a program that would work with individuals and families needing additional supports to change the trajectory of their lives and provide momentum by working collectively with all of their supports. With a steering team that is governed by staff from Garden Valley School Division, Winkler Police Chief, Genesis House, Department of Families and Eden Health Care Services, Community Care is Central Station’s take on a process called The Wrap Around. With the help of Central Station’s Community Development Coordinators, Krista Rempel and Thomas Froese, a participant will determine each agency and/or individuals they need on their support team. Once a month, their team - which may potentially include social workers, therapists, law enforcement, family members or other appropriate agencies - will come together for a meeting to collaborate their support of the participant. The intent is to ensure that all supports are on the same page, unified in the goal of helping the individual succeed. Krista and Thomas work to facilitate this unification of supports. The process can take anywhere from four months to as long as a year or more.

As Central Station has grown, so too have their needs for greater physical space. They recently announced they will be moving into the Main Street Plaza with renovations slated to begin in fall of this year. In their current location, they have had to adapt to what was already in place and the staff, board and volunteers are all excited for the opportunity to design an intentional space for optimal functionality and service.

Bev Wiebe, Executive Director of Central Station, shares, “The upcoming move to Main Street is very exciting. We are central right now but not very visible and individuals that could benefit from our services may not even know we exist as we are hidden. The opportunity we will have to create a well-designed community space is wonderful. A space where the community can gather, meet with friends old and new, enjoy a meal together. A space to collaborate and dream of how to be a stronger community. A space to work together with other agencies in town to further break down barriers.”

Bev became involved with Central Station first by volunteering as a host and then as a secretary on the board.

When the Executive Director position became available, she was asked to consider taking it. Bev says she was at a stage in life where she had been “looking forward to what God had planned for me next as my children were in high school and I had more time available.”

When asked what part of her role is the hardest, she responded, “The hardest is the overwhelm that you can feel when you see people struggling. The wish is that one could fix every problem out there, and you can’t. What keeps me going though is that every day you have the opportunity to walk alongside someone. While you may not be able to change their circumstances, you can offer hope, encouragement, resilience and the willingness to dig deep into social issues to make a difference.

The other thing that keeps me going is that we are not in this alone. We have an incredible community that says, we want to help. We want to volunteer our time. We want to serve. We want to give of our time, money, and energy, to make a difference.”

Henry Siemens publisher It’s difficult to fully express what an amazing experience putting together this magazine is.

We get a little ‘behind the scenes’ peek into the businesses and organizations that make our southern Manitoba community what it is. As we write these stories, we are reminded again and again that there is far more that unites us than divides us if we’re prepared to work together.

I believe that’s exactly what we as a society need to do today . . . we need to come back together.

I’m disheartened by the anger I see growing in our community. What I’m seeing and hearing and feeling is not healthy disagreement that leads to conversation. It’s okay to disagree, in fact it’s important, as we rarely grow if our views aren’t challenged, but this is way past that. It’s outright anger and hatred for anyone who doesn’t share our opinion. Please, let’s stop falling into that trap. That’s not who we are.

We solve nothing by pointing out our neighbour’s faults. That brief moment of righteous indignation does nothing more than put our own faults on public display for all to see.

If your neighbour or co-worker has a different opinion, listen to it RESPECTFULLY and then RESPECTFULLY share yours. Then agree that it’s okay to disagree and continue to work side by side as friends. That’s what we’ve always done and

LAST WORD it builds strong healthy communities. I implore all of us to start doing that again. This area really is special. We work together to make things. We work together to sell things. We work together to offer a hand up to those who’ve been given a raw deal. We solve huge problems. We can right many social and societal wrongs if we come back together without anger and condemnation, seeking only to understand and grow. That’s what makes us work. The world around us is crazy but we don’t have to join in.

In a day and age where we all seem to be scared or mad or both . . . let’s take a few moments to honestly look at our neighbour and see that ‘they’re the same kind of different as me’. We’re all hanging on and trying to figure it out. The impossible unfairness of all of this isn’t going to change if we get angry at those who deal with it differently than we do. It gets a little easier when we extend grace and understanding to those we disagree with and go through it together with them.

We have communities and businesses and organizations to rebuild. It’s time we come back together and start doing that.
