1500 died in Agincourt Among them the rich and the poor Many were loved and many were not But they died with conviction, my Poppy did not. My Poppy died without complaint The trust in her eyes so strong and intent Diminished and shrank and started to fade Then vanished forever, and with it came pain The unkempt fur the heavy eyebrows Covered in shadow her wonderful eyes So dark and so hidden with barely a glint Remain in my memory to haunt and convict The query, the question Dad, what did I do? Then watch the needle touch her soul The whispered, unsaid question – why? I have no honest answer The carer was arranged The £500 paid I forgave her her fleas and minor misdeeds She was my precious, my Poppy My saviour and reason to go on My little funny bundle of joy So helpless and trusting and dependent on me Lay down and died, beholden to me. Gerry said: “These words were written from me by feelings of guilt and helplessness after my little dog was put to sleep. She lost the use of her legs in March and deteriorated until the inevitable came. Poppy helped me through my worst days following the passing of my wife of 50 years, so I felt an additional layer of love for her. My poem is to everyone who has lost a pet.”

History

Pam Preedy

The Old Court House Bromley (Before the 20th century) by PAM PREEDY

Today the Old Court House is a thriving community centre under threat. For those not familiar, as I was not, Community House can be found from the Widmore Road entrance to Boots. Cross the main road and follow the little road walking towards the old fire station. At the end, turn left and Community House is on your left. The history of the Old Court House has had a number of changes, both in location and the buildings and uses. Various courts were held in Bromley and the cases reported in the Bromley and District Times. I have picked newspaper reports of the cases tried in January 1915. At the lowest level, we have Bromley Police Court where fairly trivial, open and shut cases were tried. One man was charged and fined for drunkenness, and another felon accused of stealing four fowl and two rabbits valued at 40s (£2). He was held on remand at Maidstone. A Second Court was held in Bromley. Here someone was charged for using bad language. They were small petty crimes. The Bromley Court was a magistrate’s court that could hear disputes between a plaintiff and defendant. The plaintiff would call witnesses to testify to the facts and present evidence such as papers, photographs or other documents. The defendant could cross-examine the plaintiff's witnesses to test their evidence. The defendant would then present his or her own evidence, including witnesses and then the judge would give his verdict on who was most probably in the right. Finally, there was a Coroners Court which gave judgement in cases of death. Traditionally, local courts were held wherever there was a suitable room. In the 1830s the White Hart Hotel was partly rebuilt and extended to make way for the growing coach and post chaise traffic. In addition, a spacious assembly room became the community hub. It was a court house used for magistrates courts in Petty Sessions and the County Court and also having auctions, hosting County Balls and the headquarters of the Voluntary Fire Brigade. It seems that there had been an earlier court, housed

on the site of Medhursts. On December 7th, 1956, the Mercury reported that during demolition work behind what was to be Medhurst’s (now Primark), they had discovered the remains of the Old Magistrates Court within the Georgian house at 192 Church Road. “…going down the narrow, low ceilinged stairway to the cells beneath the ground. “Dank and musty, they have no light or ventilation except for one hole made in the roof during the last war when they were used as shelters. “Divided into two parts, they have low curved ceilings with clammy, whitewashed ceilings and brick walls. The first half is barely wide enough for a man to walk along and has a rough stone seat the length of one wall where apparently the victims had to wait. “This widens out into a square room with a stone bunk wide enough to lie on and a couple of rough cupboards high up in one wall.” It has taken a lot of effort to find the real location of this building. First of all, there had been major road changes. There are discrepancies in the report and what we now know. Baxter’s itinerary has been most helpful; he was born in 1861 and wrote of all the people who he knew had lived in the homes in the High Street. Typical of journalists, ‘facts’ given are often wrong. The Court House we are seeking was probably 53 High Street. He records that “… in 1850 R B and R Latters’ office and here the magistrate met. Prisoners ranged up outside along the railings and questioned by them before going in.” Number 192 was probably numbered as 56 in the itinerary and was inhabited by a doctor’s surgery.

5 Minutes With...

Daisy Snell

Daisy Snell is 16 years old and lives in Orpington. She’s in sixth form studying for her A-levels and is an up-and-coming athlete – currently 34th in the world, 16th in Europe and 7th in the commonwealth as an under 18.

Hi Daisy! Let’s start by asking what got you into athletics?

What fuels your passion for the sport?

Under 18s and was selected to compete in the Welsh International. I jumped a PB of 6.08m and that put me to the top of the UK rankings for under 17s. In the under 20s I was able to represent Club European in Rome which was an amazing experience. Also, in the Under 20 International held in Cardiff, where I competed for England as an U18, I came second. This was the competition where I achieved my PB of 6.08m which ranks me first in the UK in the U17 age group.

I love the competitive spirit, going out trying your best. I also like the social side and meeting new people from all over the world. It’s a nice environment to be in.

Are there any community projects or initiatives that you're part of?

Before athletics I was a gymnast from age four to 11. One day I tried out at a development day and was spotted by a coach who said I had a talent in jumping. I wasn’t thinking about where it would get me at that time, I just really enjoyed it.

Are there any role models or athletes who inspire you? I really look up to a long jumper who represents GB, Jazmin Sawyers. I also like a Serbian called Ivana Vuleta. The way she jumps is technically what I do, so I enjoy matching my performance with hers and observing her technique.

Could you walk us through a typical training day or week? I train four times a week for long jump as I have decided to concentrate on this for the 2024 season. One day is technical, one gym and sprint, one a mix of both and one hill work.

How do you balance your training with other commitments? School is really important and I’ve had mocks recently, so I’ve made sure my work is completed before I head out to training. I plan out my days to make sure everything is organised.

Do you have any hobbies or ways of relaxing? I like socialising with my friends and love the cinema.

Can you share any memorable moments? At the 2021 English Schools Pentathlon, I came third individually and won a team bronze. I also qualified to compete in a Schools International competition in Glasgow. When I competed, I came third and our team came first. We also achieved a record score which was an amazing experience. In August I competed for England

10 Life in... Orpington March 2024

I coach at a club called Bees at the weekend, which is for U11s. I also coach for the Blackheath and Bromley Academy, which is a group of people on a waiting list for the main club.

What are your short- and long-term goals? Short term 2024 in July I am trying to qualify for the U18 European’s long jump, which will be held in Slovakia and that’s where I’d gain my first international GB vest. At the moment, England athletics haven’t officially said the distance, but we think it will be 6m and I’ve already jumped 6.08 so hopefully I will get to go. Also, as a goal for the future, I would love to make it to the Olympics.

Who has been your biggest support in your athletic journey? I couldn’t do this without my coaches and parents. My dad has driven me all over the UK. My coaches are really supportive – always being there for me in competition. Paul Patten is my mentor; he looks after me with my training and competition schedules and is a huge part of my athletics journey.

Do you have any favourite local spots in the borough? I like to go and watch Bromley FC. It’s nice to have a break from athletics and I also love going out to eat!

If you could convey one message to the local community, what would it be? Athletics is in the shadows a bit. It should have a higher profile as it’s an amazing sport. Blackheath and Bromley Athletics Club is one of the best in the UK and I am very fortunate to be part of it and to be surrounded by a community like this.

MAYOR’S VOICE It has been an exciting start to the year in Bromley. I’ve had the pleasure of welcoming a range of new businesses to the borough and have already seen Littleville Children’s Play Café and Indiya Tapas Bar and Restaurant both opening their doors in Orpington this year. I hope to see many more businesses joining them in the months to come, taking advantage of great business opportunities across the borough! I recently attended the opening of new Changes Places toilets in Crystal Palace Park and High Elms Country Park. These specialist facilities are so important for ensuring those with complex needs and their families can enjoy the wonderful public spaces we have in Bromley. As Mayor I have joined with residents for many important services across the borough, which have presented opportunities to reflect on significant issues that may not always be at the front of our minds in our busy lives. The recent Holocaust Memorial Service was a clear example, as faith group representatives from different religions came together with residents, council representatives and a Holocaust survivor to remember the horrors of the Holocaust and other genocides, and the tragedies involved in this history.

Lines from Linda There is so much to look forward to in March. We get to see the emerging of spring as the clock goes forward toward the end of the month. It is also the month where we celebrate mothers. Saint Patrick, from the Emerald Isle has his own commemoration day this month, on the seventeenth, and the Mad March Hare appears. I’m sure we will all agree how special mothers are, and for those of us who no longer have our mothers, it can be hard, but we will have our memories to cherish.

As my time as Mayor continues, one piece of local history I was pleased to commemorate was the Bishop’s Palace at the Civic Centre. As the council prepares to move away from this site to our new headquarters at Churchill Court, I was pleased to plant a symbolic tree recently in Bromley Palace Park behind this magnificent building. You can watch me plant the tree and discuss its significance at www.bromley.gov. uk/Mayor. Finally, we have a number of events coming up to help raise money for my Mayoral charities – Orpington Sea Cadets, PTSD999 and The MumMum Foundation. Please contact mayors.office@bromley.gov.uk for more information. Cllr Mike Botting Mayor of Bromley (2023-24) Find out more and stay connected at www.bromley.gov.uk/mayor

Behind the Badge

INSIGHTS FROM THE SUPER

I’m very pleased to share this page with Chris Line, the London Fire Brigade Borough Commander for Bromley. Chris and I work closely together on crime, anti-social behaviour and community safety as part of the Safer Bromley Partnership. It’s great we can both share our updates. As we move into March, work continues apace. In late January, all Bromley Neighbourhood Policing staff received a full day’s input in public protection, to develop their skills and ensure they are best equipped to support the most vulnerable who are at risk of harm or being affected by ever evolving criminality. We have now hosted the first Bromley Retail Crime Working group, with an excellent and motivated group of partners focussed on making our retail spaces safer. We are identifying our most prolific offenders to manage more effectively, and have already secured our first hearing at Court to obtain a Criminal Behaviour Order

against one of our most persistent offenders to control their offending more effectively. The Problem Solving Group I mentioned last month is now set to meet and really start getting stuck into the problems that affect communities most, and will look at new and innovative ways to fight crime. We continue to roll out training for officers to use our new speed gun to issue penalty notices to create a deterrent for speeding. We know this isn’t popular with everyone, but the overwhelming community response is that you want to see more enforcement of those causing danger on our roads and we continue to work to make our roads safer. There are a whole host of other things going on that I don’t have the space to go into here! But I will keep you all posted as to the progress of these as we move through the year. Superintendent Luke Baldock Bromley Borough Neighbourhood Policing

Firefront Line. .

I’m privileged and honoured to be the London Fire Brigade Borough Commander here in Bromley. I look forward to working with the local community and our partners to make Bromley a safer place to live and work. I’m looking forward to sharing with you our activities across the services we provide here in Bromley in future editions.

We believe that the best way to keep Londoners safe from fire is to help you understand common risks and reduce them in your home. Here are some of our firefighters' top tips to keep you safe:

Cooking: Even if you're a very careful cook, accidents can happen – so it's a good idea to know what to do. If a pan catches fire, there are four steps to take to stay safe: • Don't tackle the fire yourself and don't try to move the pan. • Never throw water over a fire as it could create a fireball. • Turn off the heat – but only if it's safe to do so. • Leave the room, close the door, shout a warning to others and call 999. 14 Life in... Orpington March 2024

Candles: Over 200 fires at home involved candles last year. Although they create a gorgeous warm glow, candles need to be handled with care. In 2020, over 200 fires in London were connected to candle use. That's why we recommend you swap your wax candles for 'flameless' candles such as LED tea lights.

HOME FIRE SAFETY CHECKER Our online Home Fire Safety Checker will work out the level of risk in your home with a few questions and suggest what you could do next. This might be booking a visit from one of our crews or getting some tailored online advice. Check your fire safety today and we’ll get you the right help. Just scan the QR code or go to: london-fire.gov.uk/ protect

Our online home fire safety checker tool allows you to carry out a thorough check of your home in only a few minutes. It’s simple and practical – giving you specific advice for your family and your home. Check it out here and other safety tips on our website: www.london-fire. gov.uk/safety/the-home/home-firesafety/home-fire-safety-checkerhfsc/ or call us free on 0800 028 4428 to arrange an in-person visit. SUPPORTING LOCAL AUTHORS… James Steven Clark moved to London in 2000 from North Yorkshire to train as a teacher, having taught at Langley Park School For Girls before leaving the profession to devote time to writing. Last year he published four novels and has a fifth planned for autumn 2024. He currently resides in Bromley and his latest book, Mis-fit, Misplaced, Miss Shelly Clover is part of his series of Shelly Clover novels, aimed at empowering teens. James said: “The idea for The Children at the River’s End came while struggling with Covid in the very first wave. Almost as nostalgic therapy, I searched up memorable places I visited as a kid. Writing is a happy, rewarding place for me, and there are plenty of occasions where I’m truly pushed into ‘The Zone’” James’ ebooks are available on Amazon and from Apple and his printed books are available on Amazon.

Lymphedema Awareness Week Lymphedema Awareness Week runs from 4th -8th March. Lymphoedema is a long-term (chronic) condition that causes swelling in the body's tissues and is thought to affect more than 200,000 people in the UK. It can affect any part of the body, but usually develops in the arms or legs. It develops when the lymphatic system does not work properly. The lymphatic system is a network of channels and glands throughout the body that helps fight infection and remove excess fluid. It's important that lymphoedema is identified and treated as soon as possible. If it is not treated, it can get worse. For more information see www.nhs.uk/conditions/lymphoedema Source nhs.com

Local Heroes... (Because not all heroes wear capes)

Mark Browne Mark Browne was nominated by Zeenat Noorani (of The Clarity Coach) as a local hero because of the contribution and effort that Mark goes to in raising money for charity… Hey Mark! How does it feel to be nominated as a local hero by Zeenat? It was lovely to hear and it gave me a very good feeling that someone actually feels that way enough to nominate me.

We hear that you have been involved in a number of volunteering activities – can you give us some background? I have taken part in a skydive for Wish Upon a Star and I have also ridden from London to Paris to support Debra and London to Brighton in supporting the British Heart Foundation. We carried out a free clothes collection throughout the lockdown and ended up giving the biggest ever clothes donations to The Friends of the Wisdom Hospice. A major event recently was taking part in the Aladdin pantomime raising money for JusB. We also took part in a Christmas tree collection day raising money for Heart of Kent Hospice. Other ways in which my brother and I have helped was giving a pallet of books to the Bromley and Maidstone Rotary club. The books were distributed to different schools and handed out at various events.

Why is it important for you to get involved in helping charities and with volunteering? I like to give back to the community. It gives me a great sense of achievement to help improve the lives of others.

What advice would you give to others looking to volunteer for a local charity or to help with their time? Make sure you have the time to complete what you intend to do. Go for something that you would enjoy. Do it because it really is good for your health.

When you’re not busy donating your time, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

focuses on secure document storage. We have grown from 600 boxes to 40,000 in that time in the last five years. I also focus on offering and growing the secure destruction of data including paperwork, hard drives and PC’s / laptops along with WEEE (Waste electronic and electrical equipment). At the end of 2023 we took over a Will writing company, Legal System Will Bank, offering services for secure storage for wills, will writing and updates and probate services. We now hold over 30,000 wills in store. Our project for 2024 is to start our Self Storage business. I do enjoy my business and getting out to meet new customers and making new contacts and friends. This year I am going to focus more on getting out to meet new and old faces as I have been so busy over the last few years I have not had the time.

Who do you think deserves to be a local hero? I can think of a few, but starting with Sarah Marsh-Collins who does a fair bit for charity. She is always raising money for the animals, currently training for a half marathon for the RSPCA, and has attended Muddy dog challenges too. She gives a lot of help and support to those around her and has also been recently involved in the Aladdin Christmas play, even though she was not too well and going through a lot of stress herself. She also gives great tips on how to work LinkedIn and other platforms should you ask – and great advice generally.

What does community mean to you? A sense of belonging, mutual support and the idea that individuals within a group are connected in a meaningful way.

A special ‘Thank You’ to Time For Flowers for sponsoring the bouquets and plants for our Local Heroes.

I do a fair bit in the gym keeping myself fit and healthy for my job. I like to go for a walk and spend time with my daughter.

You’ve got your own business as well. Can you tell us a little bit more about that? SMB Records Management is a family run business that

Ask The Experts

community

by TORI HOWE

You asked – and they answered! Send your need-to-know questions to our local experts by emailing hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk with the subject line ‘Ask The Experts’ Q: How can I best care for my carpet?

Johanna: Modern carpets feature clever technology designed to improve stain resistance – some even come with a stain-free for life guarantee. Carpets made from polypropylene are 100% bleach cleanable for peace of mind, wool carpets are stainresistant. The trick is to act fast and follow these steps: • Scoop up solids and blot liquids with a clean cloth working from the edges to the centre of the stain so it doesn’t spread further. • Don’t scrub and don’t apply carpet cleaner directly to the carpet but a cloth instead (always test it on a hidden area of the carpet first). • Repeat with clean water until the cleaning agent is removed. • Dry the area with a clean cloth. • Vacuum when dry. Regular vacuuming is key to keeping a new carpet looking amazing. As a general rule, you should at least once a week (twice a week for softer carpets). You can buy carpet cleaner in Tapi showrooms. Now and then, treat your carpet to a professional deep clean to leave it in excellent condition. Johanna Constantinou, Interior Trends Expert and Floorologist, Tapi Carpets & Floors

Q: What advantages does home care offer compared to opting for a care home, especially considering a decline in health of my parents?

Q: Shampan has created a loyal customer base. What advice would you give other businesses to help them do the same?

Simi: One key advantage is the ability to maintain a familiar and comfortable environment for your parents. Home Care professionals can adapt their support to the specific needs and preferences of your parents, fostering a more individualised approach to care. In a home care setting, your parents can maintain a greater level of control over their lives, participating in decision-making processes and staying engaged in activities that bring them joy. Additionally, home care can promote stronger connections with family and friends. Having a support system nearby fosters social interaction, which is vital for emotional and mental well-being. On the practical side, home care often proves more cost-effective than care homes. Therefore, it is essential to carefully evaluate your parents' specific needs, the level of care required, and your own capacity to provide support.

Sufian: Have a vision, visualise what you like to do, believe in the vision and your product and your brand, stay focused and always be open to adapt within your brand to enhance and develop it further. Create awareness and presence on social media platforms and have a good website that is easy to navigate through as today’s world of business is on our finger tips. Did You Know

WHAT’S YOUR TIPPLE?

Now that Dry January is over, you might decide to treat yourself to a glass of your favourite tipple. Online cake shop, Jackandbeyond.com, has teamed up with PsychicWorld to reveal which drink each zodiac sign might enjoy the most…

LIBRA: SAUVIGNON BLANC

ARIES: CRANBERRY MIMOSA

Aries are bold and ambitious, so the kick of champagne and cranberry juice in a cranberry mimosa is sure to satisfy.

Scorpios are passionate and calculated in everything they do, so the intense flavour of an espresso martini will satisfy their cravings.

TAURUS : BAILEYS

SAGITTARIUS: SHERRY

As connoisseurs in everything they do, Libras will appreciate a drink that matches their palate – and they can’t go wrong with a sauvignon blanc.

SCORPIO: ESPRESSO MARTINI

Taureans are calmer and more collected, preferring comfort and smoothness over a kick of flavour. They can’t go wrong with a Baileys on ice to maintain serenity.

A Sagittarius is adventurous, hilarious and full of stories. What better drink for them than a sherry?

GEMINI: BUCK’S FIZZ

A Capricorn will appreciate something strong and smooth, so a brandy lends itself well with its strong and steady notes.

To match Geminis’ flitting and sociable personalities, treat yourselves to a buck’s fizz which will pack a punch and keep you entertained!

CANCER: MULLED WINE

As the ‘mothers’ of the zodiac signs, a Cancerian will appreciate their drink being homely and comforting – so they can’t go wrong with a heart-warming mulled wine.

LEO: LIMONCELLO

Leos, treat yourselves to a pop of lemon with Limoncello – try it neat with ice or as part of a lemon-inspired cocktail and let the tartness spur on your vivacious spirit.

VIRGO: WHITE RUSSIAN

Logical, practical and a bit of a perfectionist, Virgos care more about the flavour combinations in their drinks than the alcohol content, so a mix of bitter vodka, strong coffee and sweet cream – AKA, a white Russian, is ideal.

CAPRICORN: BRANDY

AQUARIUS: TIA MARIA

Despising conventionality, Aquarians should embrace diversity and opt for a tasty Tia Maria – perfect neat or as a base for an experimental cocktail.

PISCES: SNOWBALL COCKTAIL

A Piscean should embrace their kind and creative nature by enjoying a snowball cocktail – gentle in flavour and ethereal in appearance.

Did you know…? The heart of a blue whale is so large that a human could swim through its arteries?

New strategy tackles crime A new strategy aimed at tackling the growing threat of serious and organised crime has been announced by the Home Secretary as the government steps up action to clamp down on criminal gangs operating in and against the UK. The National Crime Agency (NCA) estimate that there are at least 59,000 people in the UK involved in serious and organised crime and that it costs the UK at least £47 billion each year. The new strategy sets out further action to eradicate complex criminal networks, including through the NCA and also empowers local forces to tackle these illicit crimes in their communities. The strategy also sets out work overseas to prevent exploitation, such as modern slavery and human trafficking.

INSPIRING INCLUSION

This year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Inspiring Inclusion’. When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. When women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment. We asked a selection of female business owners in the borough ‘What woman has positively impacted you – and what lesson did she teach you?’ ‘Always Wear Your Invisible Crown’ This is a mantra that has stayed with me since I started my business, nearly ten years ago. Not only does it encapsulate a powerful message of self-worth, confidence and personal empowerment, but by imagining you are wearing a crown it encourages you to carry yourself in a graceful, dignified manner, no matter what life throws at you. For me, it is about recognising your inner value, maintaining a positive self-image, holding your head up high and giving out positive vibes. Jane Knight, Successful Mums

‘Have confidence’

The woman that has positively impacted me is Joanna Charnley who told me ‘have confidence and you will achieve.’ Christine McNamara, Gracious Homecare

‘Have honesty and integrity’

‘Manage your obstacles’

Dany Cotton, former Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade, is my inspiration. During my time as a firefighter, I admired that she was proud of her workforce, always bringing out the best from the teams that worked for her, yet able to move in the political echelons with confidence. Her honesty and integrity never faltered, even in the face of adversity. Dany Cotton continues to be a true hero for so many women, now working to help emergency service personnel suffering the effects of PTSD. Fran Flin, Flin’s Fitness

My mother has positively impacted me in many ways throughout my life. She has taught me to manage any obstacles through meditation, self-belief and faith. Simi Ghuman, Radfield Home Care Bromley

Did you know…?

Empowering women from the Bromley borough include Julie Andrews – the renowned actress lived in Beckenham and attended school in Bromley; Enid Blyton – the children's author lived in Beckenham for the first six years of her life; and the successful singer Pixie Lott. These women have made significant contributions to the arts and have left a lasting impact in their respective fields. lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Parenting

GETTING THE MOST FROM SCHOOL OPEN DAYS Great questions at school open days can help you understand a school's environment, values and approach to education, ultimately aiding your decision-making process. Here are some questions to consider when looking at taking the next step for your child…

• • •

• • •

Academics: •

School culture & community:

What is the school's educational philosophy and approach to teaching? This gives you a sense of their overall values and methods. How does the school support students with different learning needs or abilities? Shows inclusivity and caters to individual needs. What is the student-to-teacher ratio in classes? Smaller ratios suggest more personalised attention. Can you provide information about the curriculum and any unique courses or subjects offered? Helps assess if the curriculum aligns with your child's interests and academic needs. Where do pupils from your school go onto after they leave? Gives insights into the school's track record and future opportunities.

• •

How do you ensure your pupils reach their potential? Understand the school's support and development strategies. What types of clubs and activities are on offer? Reveals opportunities for extracurricular interests and social interaction. How are pupils supported pastorally? Assesses the school's approach to emotional well-being and dealing with individual challenges. What is the school's behaviour and discipline policy? Gives you an idea of their expectations and approach to classroom management. What opportunities are there for student involvement in school leadership? Shows the school's commitment to student voice and empowerment.

Top tips: • • • •

Ask questions specific to your child's needs and interests. Talk to teachers, current students and parents for different perspectives. Observe the school environment and atmosphere. Don't be afraid to ask follow-up questions to clarify information.

Family time Save your petrol and get the whole family out on their bikes. It’s a great way to explore locally and you’ll get your exercise in too. Have a look at local trails to plan a route around quiet roads – see sustrans.org.uk/national-cycle-network

What can parents do at home to best support their child's early years learning and development? Kate & Tracey: The most important part of a child’s Early Years Learning and Development is always going to be most influenced by the home environment from parents and carers. By far and away the best thing for a child to do at home is read. From birth, parents/carers can read to children which will hugely benefit their Early Years Development and future outcomes. Another key way to support children is getting them used to being in different environments with different 34 Life in... Orpington March 2024

people. This really helps with their adjustment from only being at home with known adults to being in a childcare setting. Toddler groups and baby groups from an early age can help children to begin learning to socialise and get them used to groups of children and unfamiliar adults, which will help their transitions. Short Story

THE ANTIQUES SHOPPE by CLIVE GIBBONS

He wanted a drink. The town's entertainment district had changed a lot since his last visit, although it still harboured a hive of bars and restaurants. He remembered a tavern called ‘The Queen's Head’ and hoped it was still there. The ambience had been rather seedy years ago, but the beer and snacks were cheap. Sure enough ‘The Head’ was still open, but a quirky little shop next door caught his eye. Its front window displayed a variety of antiques, knick-knacks and junk. The sign on the door said ‘OPEN’ and he felt an irresistible urge to explore the shop's contents. With a tinkle of tiny bells, the door opened to reveal a small, dimly lit space, groaning with the enormity of what it encased. Every square foot of floor and wall was home to relics of the past, and old scratchy jazz music was playing from an ancient Victrola buried somewhere in the back. Perhaps the absent clerk was lurking in the stock room? On what looked like the sales desk, a cat curled in its bed. One sleepy eye opened to survey him before slowly closing again. "Hello! Is anyone here?" he called. No answer. Just the cat. He spied a bell next to the cat's nest and rang it. The cat remained nonplussed. There was a handwritten note on the desk, ‘Gone for a drink. Back soon. Please feel free to browse. If you wish to purchase, find me in The Head.’ Typical antiques shop owner, he thought. At least the cat didn't seem to mind. It would be fun to browse unhindered, but where to look first? Collections of collections crammed their respective spaces and the walls were veneered with an eclectic array of art. Nothing was priced. A magnificent bronze elephant with pure white tusks stood out, with its trunk raised as if to trumpet for attention. If it wasn't too expensive, a chat with the shopkeeper might be in order. His eyes scanned shelves of old cameras, porcelain figurines, glass vases and paperweights. There were

mantle clocks, some ticking gently, old globes and brass telescopes, Dinky toys, model ships, vintage radios and teddy bears. His reverie ended when the music stopped; the old jazz record skipping as it crackled and popped. He surveyed the shop's contents one last time before turning to leave for a chat with the shopkeeper next door. The cat had disappeared. What a curious place, he thought... The Queen's Head was much as he remembered it – dark, noisy and not the least bit trendy. Its old projection TV had been replaced by a huge Ultra-HD panel above the bar. The place was packed and smelled of spilled beer and just a hint of over-burdened septic system. He ordered a pint and asked the barman, "Can you point out the owner of the shop next door, please? I'm interested in some of the antiques." The server looked up quizzically. "That'll be £6, mate. Sorry, I don't know what you're talking about." The visitor replied, "The antiques shop next door, sir. I was just in there and read a sign saying the owner was having a drink in here." The bartender's brow furrowed. "Really? There's no antiques shop. Not anymore. You might need to visit SpecSavers, mate!" The pint suddenly tasted vile. He pushed through the crowd to escape the bar's fetid atmosphere. The street outside was dark and silent, as dark and silent as the empty shop next door. He peered through its dusty window and saw nothing. Just bare walls and stained wooden floors, like it had been abandoned years, perhaps decades ago. At that moment, he knew he wasn't supposed to be in this town, this country, now only inhabited by ghosts. The time had come to move on… Feeling creative? We’re looking for your short stories. Send a brief synopsis to hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk with your idea and contact details.

A Final Thought…

community

Orpington is anything but ordinary

by JERRY DOWLEN Never let anyone tell you that Orpington is a dull suburban town and that the ‘O’ in Orpington stands for ordinary! Writers like George Orwell might have complained that each suburban town is identical to innumerable others, but if you are lucky enough to live in Orpington there is much for the eye to feast on. All you have to do is follow the advice of the poet W.H. Davies to ‘stop and stare’. It was 40 years ago that Dorothy Cox wrote kindly and resonantly of our town and its surrounding countryside: ‘Pleasant settings on the one hand and ease of access to London on the other reflect the attraction of Orpington.’ Her words remain emphatically true. And you don’t have to wander far from the town centre to find echoes of Sir John Betjeman who was an enthusiastic champion of suburbia. His poems and television documentaries were love-songs to chintzy-chintzy cheeriness and geraniumbeds for the lawn. Broomhill for example is a lovely, serene spot. Its small common of green space and trees helps retain a vestige of rural beauty in a built-up residential area. There are pretty cottages and rows of terraced houses pleasing to the eye. And have you found and explored the enchanting leafy alleyways that crisscross that elevated western side of our high street? As you thread your way through that half-hidden Orpington network that runs ‘over, under, sideways, down’ you’ll find surprises for sure. The Knoll Tennis Club nestles within – did you know it is there? Born here in 1936 the novelist and scriptwriter David Nobbs gifted us the 1970s comic television satire of Reginald Iolanthe Perrin. The commuter railway line to London is surely part of Orpington’s DNA? How many of us sympathised with Reggie’s nine-to-five pain? (‘Twenty-two minutes late: escaped puma, Chessington North.’) After the electrification of the Southern Railway in the 1920s, attractive new family homes sprang up in Orpington. They were styled as ‘garden estates’ because there was plenty of open green space around and within; there was a richness of birches, hazels, oaks, ash and pine trees; one

brochure extolled ‘green woodlands, golden in autumn, with deep glades shining with bluebells or the pale stars of the primrose…open parklands and gorse.’ Anyone walking around Orpington today can still see and savour the distinctive styles of notable architects and builders of the inter-war and post-war eras. The so-called ‘Tudorbethan’ houses of Noel Rees are prominent towards and into the Petts Wood border with Orpington; their halftimbered and gabled Tudor rural-romantic effect contrasts with Davis whose clean, functional buildings featured smooth white walls and steel-framed windows that sometimes turned a corner. There were flat roofs on some of his houses, too. ‘Stop and stare’ at the Davis houses today (there is an estate of them between Sevenoaks Road and Tubbenden Lane) and surprise yourself how often you can spot pleasing and imaginative little Art Deco flourishes that speak to me of an architect whose dictionary didn’t include the word ‘ordinary’ in his vision of our town of Orpington. In our own All Saints Orpington churchyard the 18th- and 19th-century memorials and gravestones visit me with conflicting moods. There is serenity in the sound of grasses swishing in the wind; birdsong in the shafts of sunlight; the distant hum of a busy high street that was once, as the occupants of that old earth would know, a quiet village. But I see too in the eye-catching, colourful and sometimes glitzy modern grave decorations that there is intent, there is defiance even – that a churchyard must not be a forlorn and faded recluse. Our churchyard is a soulful blending of the old and the new in Orpington.
