Warning signs
You might be aware that a lorry hit the bridge at Orpington Station recently? I was driving behind it and it was pretty scary. The incident stopped the traffic and the trains for several hours and six hours later there were still two policemen on site directing traffic. You might recall that there used to be a 'Over height vehicle' warning signal at the top of the hill, but you may not be aware that the local council removed that sign last year to make space for the new cycle lane. We're unfortunately creating the perfect storm here; a number of new flats in the immediate vicinity has increased road usage, we've removed the warning signs, and now we're narrowing the road and encouraging vulnerable bicycle users onto this busy bus route. It would be good to know if there are any plans to address this issue? Anon We contacted the councillors for their feedback: "The equipment failed due to old age. That was not linked to the improved walking and cycle environment in progress for Crofton Road. The equipment is expensive and has not been fully successful in eliminating bridge impacts. Options are being considered as technology has advanced since the last system was installed. Options such as targeting route planning applications and seeing how operators of high vehicles plan routes and whether that can be addressed. This isnât the only low rail bridge in the borough". Iâm sending in a picture of my three rescue girls who in turn have rescued me â Roxy, Jazz and Princess Lily. Sadly, we lost our 17-year old Jack Russell, Trixie, in lockdown. My girls compete in dog shows all over the country doing obedience, agility and heelwork to music. Lily, the little one, loves doing TV and theatre work and recently starred in a Channel 4 programme called Barking Mad. Jazz won a big part in a famous advertising campaign, while Roxy has appeared on Britain's Got Talent, so my lot are stars in their own right. They in turn have helped rescue me after losing both my parents; I owe them all so much. Deborah Fisher Turn to page 18 for more of your pet pictures
