Wonder no more; in this month’s ‘Final Thought’ you can discover what it’s all about, its historic relevance and how you can get involved. It’s a great read and we’ve learned a lot from it. In fact, we’ve got some cracking articles in this month’s issue – from how to be a morning person and grooming your pet at home, to bargain-hunting charity shop tips and growing your own veggies for immunity.

Meanwhile, we’re delighted to introduce a new regular column starting with this issue. Cllr Hannah Gray, the new Mayor of Bromley, puts pen to paper in her article, Mayor’s Voice, detailing what she has been up to since her election and how you can keep in touch with her and her upcoming events calendar. You can read her debut column on page 9. Finally, our pet feature has certainly been popular, with plenty of photos of your beloved family members coming in thick and fast. Please continue to send them in – we love reading about your pets – old and new – and seeing their pictures too. You can email hello@ lifeinmagazines.co.uk. Until next month, have a great August!

Getting Orpington to know Mayfield Place

Great houses of the district For the next few issues of our regular article page we will take you on a journey back in time to look at some of the great houses in our district and their purpose and demise. Sadly a lot of them are long gone, but some do remain. This article gives you a flavour of what is to come. In the days of the manorial system, where the local Lord or the Manor and the church parishes looked after most of the economics, welfare, law and order etc, the Lord of the Manor’s house was very important. Orpington and district had several manors and large parishes.

Bark Hart House

Did you know?

Elizabeth I stayed at Bark Hart House during her reign.

Orpington itself had two manors: Little Orpington with Mayfield Place as the home of the ‘Lord’ and Greater Orpington with Bark Hart House as the home of the Lord. Chelsfield had several large houses with Goddington House being the best known but others being the actual seat of the manor. St Mary Cray had several manors within its boundaries, and East Hall being the home of one of the Lords of the Manor and others being homes to significant land owners. Downe, Farnborough and Crofton also had significant houses as their parishes covered quite a lot of land.

East Hall

Crofton Grange

Explaining the manorial or manorialism system and how it evolved (and eventually was phased out) is quite complicated, but we hope to explain that as we look at each house in upcoming features. It wasn’t just the manor ‘Lords’ that had the houses; other houses were built by important local businesspeople and we will cover those in future editions also. Warning signs

You might be aware that a lorry hit the bridge at Orpington Station recently? I was driving behind it and it was pretty scary. The incident stopped the traffic and the trains for several hours and six hours later there were still two policemen on site directing traffic. You might recall that there used to be a 'Over height vehicle' warning signal at the top of the hill, but you may not be aware that the local council removed that sign last year to make space for the new cycle lane. We're unfortunately creating the perfect storm here; a number of new flats in the immediate vicinity has increased road usage, we've removed the warning signs, and now we're narrowing the road and encouraging vulnerable bicycle users onto this busy bus route. It would be good to know if there are any plans to address this issue? Anon We contacted the councillors for their feedback: "The equipment failed due to old age. That was not linked to the improved walking and cycle environment in progress for Crofton Road. The equipment is expensive and has not been fully successful in eliminating bridge impacts. Options are being considered as technology has advanced since the last system was installed. Options such as targeting route planning applications and seeing how operators of high vehicles plan routes and whether that can be addressed. This isn’t the only low rail bridge in the borough". Cllr W Huntington-Thresher

I’m sending in a picture of my three rescue girls who in turn have rescued me – Roxy, Jazz and Princess Lily. Sadly, we lost our 17-year old Jack Russell, Trixie, in lockdown. My girls compete in dog shows all over the country doing obedience, agility and heelwork to music. Lily, the little one, loves doing TV and theatre work and recently starred in a Channel 4 programme called Barking Mad. Jazz won a big part in a famous advertising campaign, while Roxy has appeared on Britain's Got Talent, so my lot are stars in their own right. They in turn have helped rescue me after losing both my parents; I owe them all so much. Deborah Fisher Turn to page 18 for more of your pet pictures

Community News - NOTICEBOARD

MAYOR’S VOICE… First of all, I’m thrilled to be putting together a monthly column in Life In Orpington. I’ve always been a big believer in community and supporting one another, so it’s great to see this celebrated and to be part of that. As you will have read in last month’s issue, I’m the newly elected Mayor of Bromley and, as part of this monthly update, I’ll be detailing what I’ve been doing in the borough as a whole. Because of lockdown, getting out to meet people was a little challenging to say the least, but we pulled it off. I was keen to get out and meet all those who were going about their business while the rest of us were isolating – just to say thank you to them. In our day-today lives, we rarely acknowledge the jobs that others do to provide us with a service, so I wanted to make it my mission to be ‘on the ground’ and saying thank you to those who helped support us – from funeral directors, pharmacies and surgeries, to care homes, parcel/ food delivery drivers, the police and schools. I’ve been meeting independent businesses as well as companies like Ward Security, one of the council’s contractors who, along with the police, have been helping keep the borough safe. They even gave me a demo of how they’ve been continuing to tackle things like knives, drugs and gangs. Other appointments have included the 100th birthday for The Association For The Blind, an annual flag raising ceremony to mark the week running up to Armed Forces Day and a visit to the refuse and recycling centre at Waldo Road. It’s always important to say thank you. And when it wasn’t safe to do so, I have been utilising technology to send video messages of thanks and support including Princess Royal University Hospital and Orpington Hospital. And that’s the great thing about technology; it has meant that we’ve been able to keep in touch with our

friends and loved ones throughout lockdown. And utilising technology, including social media and video chats, has meant that I’ve been able to modernise the mayoralty, demonstrating that I’m here to support the borough and to help make it easier to stay connected with me. Talking of getting in touch – please do send in your requests. By the time you read this, most businesses will have reopened under new social distancing rules, so I expect to be even busier out and about, with a lead visit time of around two to three weeks. You can email mayors.office@bromley.gov.uk On the website there are options to be able to request a phone call from me – important for those who are lonely or are continuing to self-isolate; or I’m taking part in Zoom calls with schools and organisations. There is also a form to join the mailing list so that you can read about events I’m either involved in or attending. Just visit www.bromley.gov.uk/MayorStayInTouchForm Until next month, take care, Cllr Hannah Gray Mayor of Bromley

GIVING IS RECEIVING Councillor Kim Botting (left) was on hand to take delivery of 2,000 face masks for staff and vulnerable people in the borough from Gigi Chen of Orpington Education. Gigi and her team have already kindly donated over £25,000 and numerous items of PPE to hospitals in Bromley. Thank you Gigi for supporting our community!

We’re sure you can’t wait to visit our libraries again, but, due to coronavirus, there are some new safety measures in place, as well as some changes to our library services, that you should know about. Visit www.better.org.uk/coronavirus/librariessafety to view the video containing all the information you need about our libraries reopening. We suggest familiarising yourself with the new measures, but don’t worry – when you arrive there will be plenty of signage and helpful staff on hand to guide you. Together, we can keep our libraries safer, better and stronger than ever.

what's on - AUGUST 2020 When will libraries reopen? Some of our libraries have started opening in a phased manner. How are we keeping you safe during coronavirus? Our staff are doing everything they can to keep our libraries as clean and safe as possible. As part of the coronavirus regulations, our libraries will have: Extra cleaning throughout the day. Hand sanitisation stations to use as you enter and exit. A limited number of visitors, so it will be easy to maintain a physical distance. What can you expect at your local library during coronavirus? The way our libraries operate will be slightly different to what you’re used to. Before you come to the library, be sure to: Check the opening hours of your location as we will be operating with reduced hours. Check what facilities will be available as some services may not be operating. Reserve items online, by phone or email if you’d like to borrow something from the library. A member of staff will then let you know when it’s ready to collect. You can find your local library here. During your visit to the library, we ask that you: Keep a safe distance from other visitors and staff. Come alone if you can. Acknowledge the coronavirus safety signs around you and listen to the staff as they are there to guide you. Queue if necessary. Wipe down any surfaces and equipment before and after use with the cleaning materials provided. Pay using card, not cash. What library services will be available during coronavirus? In some libraries, you will be able to: Browse and borrow books, DVDs and other resources. Book a computer for 30 minutes. Use the printer and photocopier. These services will not be available in all libraries or areas, so please check with your local library before visiting.

Reclaim your bedroom!

According to research from Premier Inn, more than half of workers transformed their bedrooms into makeshift offices during lockdown. The survey of 2,000 adults who are working from home examined how they have adapted after offices were forced to close in March. More than half (54%) of those questioned said the bedroom is the only place they can get some peace and quiet, so have turned it into a workspace. As a result, one in five are now snacking in their beds more often - and 18% have even worn pyjamas on a video call. Workers have been improving their bedroom office by splashing out on new items such as a desk chair, house plants and a new desk, with a comfy pillow to lean on being another vital addition. With no need to commute, 52% said their bedtime and wake-up routines had dramatically changed, with a third getting more sleep. But just under half of those polled said waking up to a messy bedroom puts them in a bad mood for the day. The company’s Head of Sleep, Sarah Simpson, offers 10 tips on optimising your bedroom environment and getting a great night’s sleep:

1. Tidy away pyjamas and make your bed. Being organised from the get-go, puts you in the right frame of mind to do your best work. 2. Create a different environment for work. Consider covering the bed with a throw and making sure you have a supportive pillow. 3. Avoid snacking or eating in bed while working. 4. Pack away all work equipment when the working day has finished. 5. Eat your dinner away from your bedroom if you can. 6. Relax your body and mind. Try to ensure you switch off all devices and laptops. 7. Replace your pillow regularly, have higher cotton count bed linen and ensure your mattress has sufficient support. 8. Ventilate your room. 9. Minimising light in your bedroom is important for drifting off, whereas blue light inhibits the production of melatonin, darkness actually stimulates the production of this important sleep regulating hormone. 10. Have regular wake and sleep times.

Pets

Keep your pet cool this summer! • • • • • • • •

Only walk your dog during cooler parts of the day – in the early morning and late evening Always check the pavement before you set off on your walk, if the pavement is too hot for your hand then it is too hot for their paws and will burn their paw pads If your pet shows signs of overheating; loss of energy and heavy panting, find a shady spot and give them some water Paler coloured animals are more vulnerable to sunburn, particular on their noses and areas – prevent walking between 11am and 3pm, alternatively apply a non-toxic waterproof sunblock or even pop a t-shirt on your pet to protect their vulnerable areas Make sure your pet has constant access to clean water at all times throughout the day Add ice cubes to your pet’s water when you feel the t emperature getting hotter As bizarre as it sounds – freeze some of their favourite nibbles to make cooling treats Get your pet a haircut to ensure they are kept cool

• • • • •

Maybe invest in a pet sun bed for your fluffier pets to stay cool, the raised ones are more effective as it provides added ventilation If possible, set up a paddling pool for your pet Leave out a damp towel in the shade for your pet to lie on Be aware that playing and running around with your pet in the heat will cause their temperature to rise – especially with older animals, short-nosed dogs and animals that are overweight Try and avoid travelling in your car with your pet when it’s too hot – if need be, stop for regular water breaks and keep them hydrated

5 charity shop bargain-hunting tricks

1. Look out for detagged surplus stock from high street shops as many donate samples and excess stock, plus some designer names do too. 2. Follow them on social media as you can get insider knowledge on flash sales, new products and great bargains. 3. Head to charity shops in swanky areas - chances are, many items will be designer. Hot favourites include

KEEP HYDRATED!

A recent survey by O.R.S Hydration Tablets revealed that 63% of the population admit to not being properly hydrated on a daily basis. Water makes up to 60% of the weight of an average adult and performs vital roles transporting nutrients and waste around the body, lubricating joints and regulating body temperature. Studies have shown that being dehydrated by just 2-3% can reduce overall performance by up to 20% and can have an adverse effect on short-term memory, arithmetic efficiency, visuomotor tracking, motor speed and attention. O.R.S Hydration Tablets provide a convenient and simple way to ensure the body is properly hydrated. As they are in tablet form consumers just need to drop, dissolve and drink. They are available to buy through the O.R.S website with prices from £3.50 for 12 tablets. Stockists also include Amazon, Boots, Holland & Barrett, WHSmiths, Wiggle, Morrisons and local pharmacies nationwide. lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Edinburgh, Chelsea, Oxford, Tring, Bath, Cheshire and St Andrews. 4.

Go little and often – and aim to visit during the week and in the morning as you’re most likely to nab a bargain. If you can’t get out, you can shop online if you have to; for example, Oxfam has an online shop, while many organisations also sell on eBay such as the British Red Cross, British Heart Foundation and the Royal British Legion.

SELL FOR FREE! Facebook is gaining momentum as a digital marketplace with plenty of potential buyers locally. Put in the name of your local area and the word ‘selling’ into the Facebook search box to find local groups. You might have to request to join them but it’s worth looking at what’s available to help reuse and recycle goods.

MOTHS BE GONE The warmer weather is here, which means moth season is in full swing! These seemingly harmless but pesky little creatures can cause havoc in the home, and if left untreated, can cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage to your belongings destroying garments, carpets and sofas. Zensect by Vapona is an effective moth proofer for your wardrobe. With soft scents of lavender these tiny bags (20 in each purchase) can help keep away any unwanted flying guests for up to three months. They are available to buy for £4.50 from Amazon.

JOIN THE BIG BUTTERFLY COUNT This summer you can join in with The Big Butterfly Count - a UK-wide survey aimed at helping the wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation assess the health of our environment simply by counting the amount and type of butterflies (and some day-flying moths) that you see. Why count butterflies? Tracking numbers of butterflies is crucial in the fight to conserve our natural world. Butterflies are not only beautiful creatures but they are extremely important parts of the ecosystem as pollinators and part of the food chain. Sadly they are under threat, with numbers significantly decreased since 1970. Butterflies also react very quickly to changes in their environment making them fantastic biodiversity indicators, meaning that butterfly declines are an early warning for other wildlife losses. The count will help the Butterfly Conservation team to find trends in species and in turn help them plan how to protect butterflies from extinction, as well as understand the effect of climate change on wildlife. So taking part is of great importance not just for our butterflies but for the wider environment and biodiversity in general.

How do you take part? Download the butterfly ID chart or free app for iOS and Android to identify and record the butterflies you spot. There are currently 59 species of butterfly fluttering

around in the UK. This is great opportunity to learn about them and impress your family and friends with your knowledge. You can download the count sheet at www.bigbutterflycount.org

When is the Big Count taking place? It's taking place right now up until Sunday 9th August- all you have to do is choose a place to spot butterflies and moths (sunny spots are best). Watch for 15 minutes. Then record which species you see.

Add your counts Add your counts on the website or via the app and look at the fascinating interactive map to see how your data is contributing to conservation science and research.

Get the free app

Count on the move with the free 'big butterfly count' app. Available for iOS and Android so you can while you are out and about watching butterflies.

Everybody wins! Your sightings will not only help the Butterfly Conservation's vital work but you also get to enjoy a mindful 15 minutes and be a vital part of one of the UK's biggest citizen science projects therefore officially become a citizen scientist!

RE E H E S I T ADVER My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do. I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington. So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye. But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

Life Hacks

How to become a morning person For many of us, working from home continues to be the new normal. For many others, we’re being encouraged to return to work if we’ve encountered a period of not being able to. Whatever your situation, it’s natural to feel lack of motivation with a change in daily structure. It can also send us into a morning lull, and we may find ourselves sleeping in more than we used to. However, during these moments of uncertainty, maintaining a routine is key. Alister Gray, Executive Leadership Coach and Mindset Expert, explains that ‘routines bring a level of certainty and security amidst a time when uncertainty can often feel overwhelming. Daily routines help us to stay focused, maintain productivity and feel fulfilled by activating the reward system in our brains when we complete tasks.’ Alister, who is also Founder of Mindful Talent, adds that waking up early allows us the time to prepare ourselves for the day ahead. But what if the thought of an early start sends fear through your veins? And routine seems impossible? Here are some great tips from experts to try… 1. 2. 3.

Fuel your brain to focus: Nutritionist Jenna Hope recommends eggs, as the yolks contain choline, which is pivotal for supporting memory, mood, and cognition. As well as eggs, enjoy oily fish and nuts. Protect your sleep: Euan MacLennan, Herbal Director at Pukka Herbs and Medical Herbalist at an NHS practice in London, says: “Research shows that side-effects from herbal medicines for sleep are rarely experienced, particularly compared to over-the-counter medicines. Some of my favourite natural remedies to support sleep include ashwagandha, valerian and oats – which naturally contain Tryptophan, helping to regulate our bodies circadian rhythms.” Try meditation: Yoga and meditation teacher, Kirsty Gallagher, recommends meditating for five to ten minutes

upon waking: “Feel the calm, the peace, the presence. This one pause will make the biggest shift to your day and all that follows.” 4. Listen to inspiring people: Kirsty also recommends listening to podcasts or audio books from some of the world’s most inspirational people: “‘Allowing their words to infuse and shape your day can be really beneficial, particularly if you begin your mornings listening to their positive mantras.” 5. Bring bedtime forward: Lucy Gornall, Personal Trainer at DigMe Fitness, says the big secret to being a morning person, is simply getting to bed earlier: “I go to sleep between half 9 and 10 and find that getting up at 5 is barely an issue as I will have had at least seven hours sleep.” 6. Reduce the negativity: Alister says we should focus on all the things that are great in life: “We have over 70,000 thoughts per day; it’s suggested up to 80% of these thoughts are negative in their nature as our brain constantly scans and searches for threats in a bid to keep us safe. Try to give yourself a set amount of time to read the news. When time’s up, move on and focus on something else- ideally something happier!” 7. Write it down: Journaling as part of a morning routine is a great way to delve deeper into your motivations, asking questions such as, ‘What would make today great?’, ‘What am I grateful for today?’, and ‘What inspires me most in life?’ 8. Set a wake-up intention before bed: ”Take a moment to make a pact with yourself that you will wake up earlier tomorrow than you did today, and then in small increments each day, work towards the desired time.” 9. Move your alarm: Lucy says that placing your alarm across the room means you have to physically get up to turn it off. “When you’re up, stay up, and crack on with the rest of your day!”

WHAT’S BETTER – A TUMBLE DRYER OR AN AIRER? In terms of cost, tumble dryers use a lot more energy and are therefore more expensive to run, so keep costs down by using an airer. However, the problem with airers is that when you allow your clothes to dry naturally inside, it can cause condensation and damp. The best bet? Use a tumble dryer if it’s wet weather and when there’s sun, use the airer to hang clothes to dry outside. If you need to dry them indoors, try closing the door of the room they’re in and leaving a window open to help with air circulation. August 2020 Life in... Orpington 25

BLOO FOR THE LOO

GROW YOUR OWN IMMUNITY Historic Glasshouse and Greenhouse manufacturer Hartley Botanic share their essential tips for growing the most nutritionally dense, fresh vegetables in your greenhouse. 1: Watercress – ‘powerhouse’ nutrient density score: 100% Once considered a weed, watercress is part of the Brassicaceae family and packs an impressive nutritional punch – particularly vitamin K which is necessary for blood clotting and healthy bones. 2. Chard (or Swiss Chard) – ‘powerhouse’ nutrient density score: 87.27% Chard is an excellent source of vitamin K and is also high in antioxidants, including beta-carotene and flavonoids, which fight free radicals and may protect against disease. It is also loaded with fibre.

Bloo has launched Deluxe, a new range of premium toilet rim-blocks that have been inspired by fine fragrances and last up to 240 flushes. Two scents are available Magic Moonflower & Delicate Magnolia – and are inspired by Dolce and Gabbana and Prada Luna Rosa Sport respectively. They are available in Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Wilko and cost £2.50. 26 Life in... Orpington August 2020

3. Beetroot greens – ‘powerhouse’ nutrient density score: 87.08% Beetroot greens are the green leaves of the beetroot plant and are bursting with vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, known to be a natural immunity booster, vitamin A for healthy skin and eyes and vitamin K. Their health benefits may help boost immunity, lower blood pressure, improve mental health and strengthen bones. 4. Spinach – ‘powerhouse’ nutrient density score: 86.43% Spinach is well known for its nutritional qualities and has always been regarded as a plant with remarkable abilities to restore energy, increase vitality and improve the quality of the blood. There are sound reasons why spinach would produce such results, primarily the fact that it is rich in iron. Spinach is also an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C and folate as well as being a good source of manganese, magnesium, iron and vitamin B2. lifeinmagazines.co.uk

A Final Thought‌ Bromley and Neuwied Twinned in Friendship

lifestyle

Bromley Youth Concert Band at Rimmersdorf Abbey

by STEVE COTTERELL Town twinning isn't about politics, it's about people and, as a direct result of the London Borough of Bromley being twinned with the German town of Neuwied, many lasting friendships have been formed. Neuwied is one of the largest cities in Rhineland-Palatinate, close to many of the historic sites of the rivers Rhine and Mosel and is a staterecognised tourist resort and centre. It sits on the right bank of the Rhine between Bonn and Koblenz and has just less than 65,000 inhabitants. Bromley has been twinned with Neuwied since October 16, 1987 and the Bromley Town Twinning Association is a voluntary body, separate from the borough council and run by its own committee under its own funding. Membership, among which Orpington is well represented, is open to everyone living or working in the borough. So, what does the Association actually DO? Without doubt, the main event of the year is the exchange visit when, in alternate years, a party of Bromley members visits Neuwied and a party of Neuwied citizens visits Bromley for a long weekend. For convenience, comfort and economy, a coach is arranged for the journey, although those wishing to make their own travel arrangements are perfectly free to do so. Visitors have the option of staying in the homes of local residents, as their guests, or of staying in a hotel. This autumn it's our turn to go to Neuwied, but because of the Covid 19 situation, this visit has been postponed until next year. When we visit Neuwied, the programme commences with a Civic Reception followed by some interesting excursions such as a visit to a place of historical interest, a wine festival or even a cruise along one of the most scenic stretches of the Rhine. Some meals are eaten during excursions, some taken with our hosts and the visit concludes with a banquet at which all members of both organisations attend. We are all made most welcome and spend a most enjoyable few days in the company of our hosts.

On the return visit, when the German people visit us, the programme follows a similar format and we do our best to give our guests an entertaining, interesting and memorable time. Past excursions have included a trip on the Kent & East Sussex Railway from Tenterden and visits to the Houses of Parliament, Chartwell and Brighton Pavilion. Because strong friendships have developed between members of the two organisations, some also make their own arrangements to visit each other at other times, especially during festivals. Contact between the two towns isn't limited to association members, though. An annual tennis match is held between the Park Langley Club and Neuwied Tennis Club. The Bromley Youth Music Trust has played at a Spring Festival Concert in Neuwied and Orpington's Newstead Singers have performed in Neuwied. The Ravensbourne Morris Men have visited Neuwied several times and have always received a warm welcome; their performances providing much amusement for the locals. Contact has also been made between schools in Bromley and Neuwied. However, the exchange visits are not the association's only activities and the committee arranges a programme of events throughout the year. These include a New Year dinner, an annual lecture (on a German theme), visits to places of interest, garden parties, wine tastings and meals out. We also run the occasional stall at local fetes to tell people about the association, raise funds and recruit new members. The Bromley Town Twinning Association has its own web site at www.bromleytowntwinning.co.uk and a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BromleyTTA. Bromley's partner association in Neuwied, the Freundeskreis Neuwied-Bromley (Neuwied-Bromley Friendship Circle) also has a website at http://freundeskreis-neuwied-bromley.de For further information, please contact the membership secretary on 020-8777 2361 or email becksank@outlook.com
