Inspired by travels of the summer holidays, the team and I thought that it would be a great idea to come up with a new type of editorial feature – ‘Eat Your Way Around the World – in the Bromley Borough!’ So, we handpicked a different selection of restaurants to give your tastebuds a tantalising treat! If you call to make a booking to any of the restaurants featured, please mention that you saw them in this magazine. It helps reinforce how we help spread the good word about local businesses and the work they do.
Elsewhere in the magazine we’ve got everything from Local Heroes and Ask The Experts, to local news updates and What’s On events. Plus don’t forget you can download the App or register to receive a monthly copy to your email too!
Finally, we’re gearing up for this year’s Above and Beyond Bromley Business Awards on Thursday 13th November. Although submissions and nominations for this year have now closed, the last remaining tickets are available. If you’re a small business looking to network, be entertained and support local businesses, grab a ticket from www.the-abbbas.co.uk – you won’t regret it!

Lest we forget
I popped down for the VJ Day event in Orpington as an ex-soldier and airwoman (though most of my service was after WW2). I took some photographs before the sun became too strong, capturing as many people as possible.
The President of the Royal British Legion, Kim Botting, took on some of the load at the event. Afterwards, flowers were laid at the remembrance area.
Rosalind Lee
What wonderful pictures Rosalind and we’re delighted to see the event went well. Following your email we spoke to Gary Valentine, Chairman of the Royal British Legion, who said: “I was honoured to attend Orpington’s Victory over Japan Ceremony today. An absolute privilege to be Chairman of such a special organisation. Lest we Forget. Special thanks to all involved.”
Here’s Ziggy (Stardust), our new kitten! We’ve got one of him smiling (yawning really) and one of him falling asleep on my daughter's Lego plate whilst she was building. Ziggy is a energetic and loving 15 week old kitten that loves cuddling up in the evening on the sofa, sleeping where he shouldn’t and chasing his favourite fuggler toy around the house.

First, some context. Diwali, celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists, dates back over 2,500 years. Its origins lie in ancient India, marking the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance –themes that have resonated across continents and centuries.
And while Bromley’s story doesn’t stretch quite that far back, our borough’s history – from Roman settlements to Victorian railways – has quietly intersected with the wider world in ways that make it part of the Diwali story today.
Empire, Trade and the Arrival of New Cultures By the 19th century, as Britain’s empire expanded, so too did the cultural connections between the UK and India. Bromley, like many parts of London, saw the arrival of individuals linked to British trade, governance and education in India. Some returning British officials and traders settled in the Bromley area, bringing with them stories, souvenirs and, indirectly, exposure to Indian traditions like Diwali. Though these early links were shaped by colonialism – a complex legacy to say the least – they paved the way for greater cultural exchange. Fast forward to the post-war years and Bromley, along with much of London, saw families from India, East Africa and the Caribbean making new homes here, many of them celebrating Diwali.
Diwali, Bromley and Bowie?
Now, here’s a fun historical twist. Bromley’s most famous son, David Bowie, was famously open to Eastern influences – musically, spiritually and philosophically. During the 1960s and ‘70s, when Bowie was walking the streets of Bromley and Beckenham, a wave of interest in Indian culture swept through Britain. From The Beatles discovering sitar music
to yoga and meditation becoming mainstream, Eastern traditions including Diwali started capturing the British imagination.
While there’s no record of Bowie lighting diyas in his parents’ home on Plaistow Grove, it’s easy to imagine the curiosity and cultural blending that defines both his music and the Diwali spirit being part of Bromley life even then.
Bromley’s Historic Spirit of Celebration
Even long before Diwali took root locally, Bromley had its own tradition of community celebration. The Bromley Charter Market dates back to the 13th century – a gathering of traders, farmers and townsfolk coming together, not unlike the bustling Diwali fairs seen in cities like Leicester or Mumbai today.
And Bromley’s historic High Street has seen centuries of festive gatherings, processions and light displays – from Victorian Christmas illuminations to royal jubilees. So when homes across Bromley light up for Diwali, it’s not just a new tradition, it’s another chapter in a long history of community, celebration and coming together.
Today, Bromley’s growing South Asian community continues to celebrate Diwali with pride while curious neighbours join in the fun – visiting local temples in Croydon or Kent, attending cultural events or simply admiring the glittering lights and colourful rangoli designs adorning doorsteps in Beckenham, Bickley and beyond.
The Festival of Lights reminds us that history isn’t just dates and dusty books – it lives in the traditions, celebrations and connections we share today.
So, this Diwali, as homes across Bromley glow with candles and fairy lights, remember – you’re not just lighting up the present. You’re illuminating a history that stretches from ancient India to Victorian Bromley and right into our modern multicultural borough.
Happy Diwali, Bromley – and here’s to making history together.

A once-overgrown and gloomy walkway has been given a brandnew lease of life thanks to a fantastic community project at the Hazelmere Road underpass. Led by Leigh Sims from the Petts Wood and District Residents’ Association (PWDRA), and supported by The Chislehurst Society, the National Trust, Bromley Council and Network Rail, the project has truly transformed the space. Local volunteers worked hard cutting back shrubbery, jet washing and painting the walls a vibrant blue before artist James Daw brought the tunnel to life with a stunning mural. Bromley Council also improved access, making it much easier for pushchairs to reach the nearby National Trust woodland.
The project was officially unveiled last month by Bromley’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Gemma Turrell, alongside Cllr Simon Fawthrop, with key stakeholders and volunteers gathering to celebrate the achievement. Funding came from generous contributions by The Chislehurst Society, Network Rail, PWDRA, the Petts Wood Business Association, Southeastern Railway and £3,500 raised through a community Crowdfunder. One Inn the Wood micropub also pledged a three-year maintenance contribution. PWDRA hopes this will be a lasting example of what can be achieved when local organisations and residents work together. If you’d like to join the new Friends of the Underpass group to help keep the space looking fabulous, get in touch with them by emailing specialprojects@pettswood.org.uk. Brothers Anthony and Pete from Southeast Legacies grace our Orpington cover this month – and share what they love most about living and working in the borough: “We’ve called Bromley home for more than 30 years, so being able to both live and work here really does mean the world to us. Supporting the people we see every day – and having a presence on two local high streets – is something we’re incredibly proud of. For us, community is about pulling together, whether that’s lending a helping hand, checking in on someone, or simply showing respect. At its heart, it’s about being a positive influence in the place you call home.”

Research by the University of Leeds has highlighted the benefits of dancing for older people. They welcomed 685 people aged 55 and over to weekly dance classes over a 12-month period. The average age was 75, with many being over 85. The research showed that dancing is good for the heart, builds muscle strength, improves balance, increases the ‘happy hormones’ serotonin and endorphins, increases flexibility and agility and improves mental health. Keen to start dancing? Musician and dancer Janet Maile has launched a new class in Orpington, Improve Your Fitness Dancing for Seniors. After a serious accident in 1997 left her with a broken back and severe knee injuries, Janet turned to dance to aid her recovery. Despite doctors recommending a knee replacement, she refused – and credits dance with keeping her mobile and pain at bay.

Bromley has officially been named one of the happiest places to live in Britain, and we couldn’t agree more!
According to a recent feature by The Guardian (May 2025), Bromley scored high for its abundance of green spaces, low crime rates and strong sense of community. With parks like High Elms, Scadbury and Kelsey buzzing with families, dog walkers and joggers, it’s clear that fresh air and friendly faces are part of daily life here.
Our borough also boasts excellent transport links, a thriving mix of independent businesses, and countless opportunities to get involved in local clubs, activities and volunteering. These factors all help foster the warm, welcoming atmosphere that residents love.
In a time when joy and connection matter more than ever, it’s heartening to see Bromley get the feel-good recognition it deserves. And for those of us lucky enough to live or work here – well, it just confirms what we already knew! We’re proud to bring you only good news from across our borough.
The stats:
82% of residents say they feel safe in their local neighbourhood
Over 160 parks and green spaces across the borough
300+ independent businesses helping to create a thriving local economy
Fast trains to London in under 20 minutes – urban buzz meets leafy calm
Ranked one of the UK’s top areas for community spirit
(Source: Rightmove Happy at Home Index)
I’m writing this as the month of August – for many, the holiday month and a chance to get away and recharge batteries – has been and gone. But civic and community life in Bromley very much continues year-round – and the Mayoress and I have had the opportunity to visit events to support local charities, champion children’s literacy (opening Bromley Palace Park’s Little Library), and open new businesses and facilities (including the new and refurbished Chislehurst Library).
Two events over the month stood out in particular. First, Durbar Spice, a local Indian restaurant in Downe Village, wrote to me shortly after my election as Mayor with an extremely generous offer – to provide 50 freshly prepared meals to homeless people across the borough – and working with local charity Bromley Homeless, which supports homeless people and those facing homelessness in Bromley, we arranged distribution. The Mayoress and I visited the Bromley Homeless Centre, where we saw first-hand some of the vitally important support provided, and spoke with staff and users of the centre alike about their experiences and the support available for them – an opportunity to help those affected by, and raise awareness of, an incredibly important issue, all made possible by the generosity of a conscientious local business.
Yes, it truly is the autumn. Shorter days, colder nights and I promise not to mention how many countdown days until Christmas!
What I am thinking about are those nights drawing in and getting colder. And, naturally, on goes the heating to keep the chill out. This set me thinking about many, many, years ago when there was no electricity or fridges or basically even hot water to keep off the winter chill. I am going back a very long time, to the cave men period in time. What stood out for me was the fact all of them had a lot of hair. They had swimsuit type, animal fur, one pieces, covering their torso protecting and warming their body. (Here, I am remembering the male characters of Fred and Barney in the Flintstones). Anyone else old enough to remember that wonderful television show?
August also saw our nation commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day), with 15 August marking eight decades since Japan’s surrender and the final end of the Second World War. Local services of commemoration took place across the country, and we joined Deputy Lieutenant Christopher Muttukumaru, Orpington’s local MP Gareth Bacon, and representatives of Orpington’s Royal British Legion, including local President Cllr Kim Botting, at Orpington War Memorial – laying wreaths to honour and remember those who served, and in many cases gave their lives, for us all, commemorating an oftenoverlooked, but extremely important, anniversary.
Both events were an important reminder of the importance of service in all its forms – whether through the Armed Forces or similar institutions, or to those less fortunate – and of the difference that each and every one of us can make by stepping up to serve, in our own way.
Best wishes
Cllr Jonathan Andrews Mayor of Bromley (2025-2026)

climate. I have no desire to put beauty salons out of business, but most of them combine with hair salons and if we are going to make a fashion of growing our hair down to our ankles, the hair salons will be buzzing with wash and blow-dry customers, as I also include gentlemen. (They need to keep warm too).
I haven’t found any pictures of cavemen shivering with cold "
I have done extensive research, but I haven’t found any pictures of cavemen shivering with cold. They lived in stone caves and kept warm by building fires and wrapping themselves in animal hair. So, I concluded, it is all about growing our hair in winter. No haircuts until spring. Sorry ladies but may I suggest the bikini wax, and dare I even mention a Brazilian, is a complete no-no for the winter
So, on the plus side, no agonising in the leg waxing department, and as we don’t wear sleeveless dresses in winter, we can also leave our armpits be. Pure joy. Gentlemen may be luckier in the nose department, but there are now hair extensions to be had, maybe us ladies, could hang a few short ones from a ring through our female nose. Beards and moustaches may even come into fashion for the ladies too. (The heating bills will be minimum). And, let’s put those hooped earrings into good use, another few hair extensions will help warm the neck, maybe even down to our collar bones. So, come the spring and we’ve had no winter chills or colds and our heating bills have been low, we can invest in a lovely weekend away in the Kent countryside. Somewhere abounding with rabbits but no hares.

This month I’d like to talk about the next phase of the Met’s ‘New Met for London’ plan with phase 2 of the plan now published in draft form. You can find this by searching for ‘New Met for London’ in your search engine and finding the pdf of the document on the webpage.
I was here in Bromley when the first iteration launched in early 2023 covering until 2025, and the Commissioner attended our launch event at the Civic Centre in Bromley in August 2023. We have achieved a great deal since then, but of course still have a long way to go. We are starting to see some real successes and crime in key areas starting to reduce. Many of the headlines are covered in the draft consultation document. What is crucial is that we listen to the views of communities here in Bromley to shape and refine this strategy.
The Commissioner will once again return to Bromley for a public meeting to launch the new strategy, and to directly hear your views. This is scheduled for the evening of Thursday 4th December 2025. We are sourcing a venue but will aim for somewhere accessible and convenient for anyone who lives or works in Bromley.
The Commissioner will present his plans to the communities of Bromley for the Met as a whole, and how this will impact policing on the Borough. As mentioned, you will have your chance to put your questions, concerns and suggestions to him directly. I will be there to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the last two and a half years, along with my plans for implementing the Commissioner’s plan on the Borough. I will also be there to answer any of your questions.
Superintendent Luke Baldock Bromley Borough Neighbourhood Policing
Home should be the place where we feel the safest. But for some residents in Bromley – particularly the elderly, people living alone or those facing mobility and health challenges – the risk of fire can be a much bigger danger. The good news? By working together as neighbours, families, charities, carers, doctors, nurses, police and fire crews, we can help reduce risks and keep every home in our borough safer.
Working together
Bromley’s Borough Commander, Ian Frame, and his dedicated team are leading a strong Fire Safety Initiative across the borough. His Community Liaison and Fire Safety Teams are working with charities, health and social care groups, community organisations and other local partners with one clear goal: to protect those most at risk. Part of this work is promoting London Fire Brigade’s Home Fire Safety Visit (HFSV) referral system and checklist. By educating groups on how to spot potential hazards and encouraging them to use the referral process, the team ensures residents get early support and practical advice. If you think your organisation could benefit from a talk on fire safety, get in touch via the London Fire Brigade website. Spotting the risks
Sometimes little things pose the biggest danger: a cluttered hallway, an overloaded plug socket, or a faulty heater. Left unchecked, they can escalate into a life-threatening situation. That’s why friends, neighbours, carers, volunteers and
by CHERYL BROOKS
family members play such an important role. You might be the first to notice when something isn’t quite right – and by completing a referral or using the Home Fire Safety Checklist, you could be preventing a devastating fire before it starts.
Making a referral is simple. Once received, local fire crews will arrange a Home Fire Safety Visit at a time that suits the resident. The visits are friendly, respectful and tailored to the individual. Every home and person is different, and the advice reflects that.
During a visit, fire crews will:
• Assess the home for potential hazards
• Offer clear, practical advice
• Install free smoke alarms if needed
• Share tips on safe cooking, electrical safety and escape plans
These visits are not about criticism – they’re about reassurance, empowerment and making homes as safe as possible.
Make a referral today: Visit www.london-fire.gov. uk/safety and follow the links for The Home and Home Fire Safety Checker, or call 0800 028 4428 or email smokealarms@london-fire.gov.uk.
Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Mike Davies was nominated by Herbie Künstlinger who said: “A cornerstone of Bromley’s athletics scene for decades, Mike has inspired generations as a coach, mentor and official. From nurturing young talent on the track to guiding fellow judges behind the scenes, his passion for the sport and unwavering commitment to the community have made him a true local hero. Now in his mid-80s Mike has been coaching athletics all his life. He deserves the recognition – he turns up consistently for the athletes – he is a rock and so many people depend on him.”
Mike, were you surprised you’d been nominated as a Local Hero by Herbie?
Yes, I have known Herbie as a fellow throws coach with the local athletics club for many years, but it’s nice to know that he feels I deserved this nomination.
You’ve been involved in athletics for most of your life – what first sparked your passion for the sport?
As a kid in Eastbourne I was always running somewhere – to the woods, playground or the Downs – so, starting secondary school just after the inspiring 1948 Wembley Olympics, I took to cross-country running readily, leading to track and field events in the summer and then into the local athletics club. Thus began a life-long passion for the sport.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Teaching athletes their events and coaching them to improve gives me the most satisfaction, and sharing their pleasure at their achievements.
Over the years, you’ve trained many people to become athletics judges. What inspired you to take on that role?
Teaching is in my DNA so, when my officiating had reached a certain level, I was ready to respond to a request to tutor on Kent Officials’ courses. I have also been mentoring newer officials in my own club, Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC, ever since – about 30 years now.
What’s been one of your proudest moments of your journey?
In coaching, a particular weekend some years ago stands out for me. We took six hammer throwers to the English Schools Championships and came home with three gold medals, two silvers and a fourth place.
What’s your advice for anyone looking to get involved in athletics?
To get down to the track at Norman Park. Whatever role you have in mind, the stadium staff will point you in the direction of someone who will be pleased to help you.
How important do you think local sports clubs and volunteers are to the wider community?
The opportunity to take part and develop in a sport is important to the physical and mental wellbeing of so many people. Without local sports clubs these opportunities would simply not be available to most people.
What are your hopes for the future of local athletics?
As the club has recently taken over and developed the athletics stadium at Norman Park, I am confident that there will be an excellent facility for athletics training and competition in Bromley far into the future – at a time when many other tracks round the country are closing or falling into disrepair owing to their local councils’ financial difficulties. Personally, I would like to see many more aspiring jumpers and throwers from local schools coming to the club.
Do you have any personal goals or dreams, either in sport or beyond?
After all this time in the sport I just want to keep doing what I am doing. Without it, my wife says I wouldn’t be worth living with.
Finally, what does community mean to you?
In large part, the community is made up of the many smaller communities to which we belong – that is, the clubs and societies that make us feel at home here.
Sue made Mike an arrangement of 4 plants - he was delighted to receive them!
A special ‘Thank You’ to Time For Flowers for sponsoring the bouquets and plants for our Local Heroes.

Q: Why is gut health so important and what are some simple ways to support my gut?
Charlotte: Your gut is home to trillions of microbes that influence everything from digestion to immunity, hormones and even mood. Unfortunately, factors such as antibiotic use, highly processed foods, low fibre diets and stress can all disrupt the balance of beneficial bacteria, which may contribute to common complaints like bloating, IBS, fatigue and skin issues. In terms of support, variety is key! Aim to eat 30 different plant foods each week. This includes vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices. Each different plant provides unique fibres and compounds that nourish your gut bacteria. Try including the “3 Ps” daily:
Q: What needs to be taken into consideration when planning a project like fitted wardrobes or storage?
• Probiotics – live bacteria found in foods like raw sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir and natural live yoghurt. Just a small daily serving can make a difference.
• Prebiotics – these are fibres that feed your good bacteria. Good sources include apples, asparagus, onions, garlic, leeks and oats.
• Polyphenols – plant compounds with antioxidant properties that your gut bugs love. Think colourful foods like berries, red grapes, green tea, dark chocolate (70%+) and extra virgin olive oil.
Finally, start small – add an extra portion of veg to your plate, try a new fruit or grain each week, and don’t underestimate lifestyle factors. Managing stress, sleeping well and staying active are just as important. And if you’ve been struggling with ongoing gut symptoms, it can really help to get personalised advice - that’s where I can support you.

Michael: The main consideration is working with the available space. Sometimes a customer’s design ideas and expectations don’t always work within the confines of the space available. We encourage an initial meeting in the planning process to hear ideas and discuss ways in which we can achieve those. For example, a client may want a specific type of door style but, when that door is opened, there isn’t enough space to get around the other furniture. We can overcome this by changing the width of the doors, moving them along the wardrobe itself or swapping to sliding doors. These tweaks are often very small but without them, the overall design would not benefit the customer in the best way possible. Another thing often overlooked is that of the carpet where the storage is being fitted. We’d need to cut the carpet in order to achieve a level ground on which to build the wardrobe/cupboards, but ensure this is discussed at the initial meeting. We suggest asking as many questions as possible in your initial meeting with your carpenter to ensure you are on the same page and that there are no hidden costs. At PWI we are as contactable and as flexible as possible when it comes to our customer needs, something that comes from being a small, local business that cannot always be achieved with larger organisations.

Q: What extra care would someone living with dementia receive?
(PWI)
Simi: A key area is cognitive stimulation. Family members can engage individuals in memoryboosting activities such as puzzles, reminiscing exercises and brain games, which help stimulate cognitive function and support memory retention. These can improve mental agility and provide a sense of accomplishment. Safety is another important aspect – remove trip hazards, install handrails and using non-slip mats if possible. Emotional support – engaging in calming conversations and providing a listening ear – can significantly improve a person's well-being. Finally, social engagement is vital. Through our Connections Café at Community House Bromley, we provide a friendly space where individuals can socialise, participate in activities and form meaningful connections with others. This helps reduce isolation and promotes a sense of community. At Radfield, we offer personalised support that adapts to the specific needs of each individual, while also promoting their independence.

BY 16TH OCTOBER for your chance to win!
Born from personal experience and a desire to make tough conversations easier, Southeast Legacies was founded by brothers Anthony and Pete Rockliffe in 2019 to help people plan ahead with compassion, clarity and care. From a two-person office in Petts Wood to a growing team of nine and a second branch in Orpington, the firm continues to support families with wills, probate and power of attorney services –all while planting trees and giving back to the community.
Anthony, Pete – can you provide a bit of background on how the business launched?
While Anthony was working as an heir hunter (tracing the rightful heirs to people who died without wills), I had just been diagnosed with cancer. We realised that these were conversations people rarely had. It wasn’t about focusing on death – it was about being prepared. What would you want to happen if the worst were to happen? We wanted to help people make informed choices, and to do it in a way that felt simple and accessible. That was the spark that led to launching Southeast Legacies.
What’s your journey been like so far?
Serving our community was always a priority. We started in a small, two-man office on the high street in Petts Wood. When we hired our first employee, we literally had to take turns sharing the office with them! When the pandemic hit, business increased as more people started thinking about the future. That allowed us to move to a bigger office just three doors down. Since then, the team has grown to nine, we’ve opened a second office in Orpington, and now work alongside two consulting lawyers. Over the past few years, we’ve also acquired three businesses from retiring practitioners. To date, we’ve helped around 5,000 clients –and counting.
Can you tell us more about the tree planting scheme that you do?
We feel very strongly about the environment and it’s important that we try to counteract all the paper that we use. As such, for every document drafted, we donate to the World Land Trust to plant a tree.
What services do you offer and how do they help your clients?
We host appointments in our meeting rooms, but in the event that people can’t get out, we will look to visit them. In terms of our core services, we offer will preparations, trusts - protecting assets & vulnerable people, lasting powers
of attorney and probate work. We are seeing an increase in the numbers of enquiries where people have sadly lost loved ones and we help guide them through the whole legal process. Since the pandemic, the average age of our customer has dropped from 50s-60s to people in their 30s as they become more aware that a will is something that they should have in place.
What are some of the challenges you currently face?
There’s a lot of uncertainty around government policy changes – particularly regarding pensions. We live in a part of the South East where inheritance tax still impacts many people, even though national stats might suggest otherwise. Technology is another area to watch. It’s an incredible tool, but it can also be risky. We’ve seen some truly worrying documents created by AI – and people often don’t realise what’s legally valid and what isn’t.
What advice would you give to someone who hasn't written a will?
Start by just getting some information – we’re always happy to talk you through it. Think about why you’d want to do this. A will ensures that the people you love and trust are the ones making decisions, not government rules. It’s about protecting what matters most – whether that’s your assets, your loved ones, or your wishes. Power of attorney is just as vital. It gives you control and peace of mind if you’re ever in a position where you can’t make decisions yourself.
What has been one of your proudest achievements?
The team, without a doubt. We laid the foundations, but they’ve taken what we built and run with it. We’re also proud of how many people we’ve helped – and the support we’ve been able to give to charities. It’s an amazing feeling to tell organisations like St Christopher’s and Foal Farm that we’ve raised money for them. Knowing we’ve made a difference means the world.

What’s remarkable? At just 17, Amelia is a shining example of energy, empathy and enthusiasm. As the lead charity rep at her school, Amelia throws herself into everything she does, meeting people from all walks of life and making a positive impact wherever she can.
You’ve sponsored dolphins, a pangolin and a sloth – what made you choose these animals? They’re all very underappreciated. All eight species of pangolin are threatened with extinction due to hunting for their meat, skin and keratin scales, as well as increasing agricultural development. Very few people outside of the countries where they originate know they exist. The risk of losing so many incredible species to ignorance and hunting is extremely troubling. You raised money to travel to Borneo – what was that experience like?
It was one of the best experiences! Spending 16 days in a completely different country on the opposite side of the world was a big cultural change, but one I really treasured. Forming new relationships with many different people was fantastic. The skills and qualities I gained from the trip will never be forgotten, such as resilience during our 3-day hike in the Bornean jungle.

Gracie’s life takes an unexpected turn and everything she ever knew is wiped out of her memory. Who does she turn to for help? Will she live the same life twice? Or will she restart down a completely different path? Due to a car crash she is left with severe amnesia, forcing her to put her trust into the memories of others to help her settle back down. Gracie decides to leave everything and everyone behind and move to her late mother’s flower farm in order to learn who she is now. This opens her up to a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love as she meets a handsome neighbour. Overall, a captivating read filled with clues and plot twists.
You also sponsor a child in Kenya and collect school uniforms – why is this important to you?
I’m so grateful for everything that I have and want to make an impact by doing charity work and helping others. Sharon, my sponsored child, is so much like me. She’s my age, loves her family and school, and sending her a little bit of money every month is the least I can do. Every girl should be able to receive an education!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your charity work?
That it doesn’t take much to make a difference. Small actions lead to big changes and changes for the better are always possible if people come together and celebrate their differences.
What advice would you give to others your age?
Get involved! I promise you won’t regret it once you start doing something, and you may find a passion in a completely unexpected place. We’re only here for a short amount of time – so make everything you do count!
What’s next for you?
After finishing school, I want to go to university to study zoology, then I’m going to travel the world!
What does community mean to you? It means togetherness and acceptance between individuals. The sooner people start to care about each other more, the sooner the world becomes a better place. Tolerance is key!

Bromley’s Contingent Works is set to host the launch of Talk Club Bromley on Thursday 10th October, World Mental Health Day. The initiative offers a free community for men to talk, listen and support each other.
Talk Club is a national mental fitness movement helping men open up about how they really feel. It began in a Bristol pub in 2019 and has since grown to more than 5,000 members across 125 clubs around the UK. Every two hours a man in the UK dies by suicide, and Talk Club wants to change that.
Founder of Contingent Works, Ewan Buck, said: “We’ve always believed workspaces should feel more like hotel lobbies than offices – relaxed, open and welcoming. It’s exactly the kind of space where conversations like these belong. The first session is an open invitation to anyone curious to find out more. Together, we’ll set the dates for the ongoing Bromley Talk Clubs; all free, all hosted at Contingent Works.”
A Talk Club session is simple but powerful. Each meeting starts with the question: ‘How are you? Out of 10?’ From there, men share what’s on their minds, what they’re grateful for, and how they’ll look after themselves in the week ahead. Groups are small, safe, supportive, and focused on listening without judgement.
To join the event, just turn up on Thursday 10th October. The event runs from 6.30pm-8.30pm. For more information see http://talkclub.org

In April 2025, Ersun Redzheb took over ownership of the 1917 Chill Café on Widmore Road in Bromley and quickly made his mark. He revitalised the business by boosting footfall and placing customer service at the heart of operations.
With a background in hospitality and catering, as well as co-owning food ventures with partners, this new project allowed Ersun to leave his own personal imprint. He’s committed to maintaining top-tier quality, efficiency and a memorable guest experience.
One standout feature is the café’s charming out-building, which Ersun has turned into an events space. For example, Grow London Local recently hosted its Bromley Coffee Fridays there, a free networking event for local businesses. During a consultation, Ersun shared that while the business is thriving, competition in the area is fierce. He’s keen to

raise the café’s profile and is planning interior renovations and a possible rebrand. To support these developments, a business mentor would be invaluable. He takes pride in his attentive team, especially in delivering excellent service, but highlighted that when he’s not on site, having staff trained in leadership would help maintain high standards.
Grow London Local have arranged access to free business mentoring and on-demand social media marketing workshops for Ersun and his team. They’ve also referred them to London South East College’s free courses, including a “Principles in Team Leading” certificate.
Finally, Grow London Local is planning another follow-up consultation with Ersun once he concludes negotiations on new lease terms. At that point, they’ll offer even more tailored support on his upcoming projects.

1. Purpose beats profit Yes, money matters but passion is the real driver. Many business owners are motivated by making a difference, solving problems, or bringing something beautiful into the world. Find your why –it’ll keep you going when things get tough.
2. Start small, think big You don’t need a five-year plan or a huge budget. Some of the best businesses begin as side hustles, scribbled ideas or weekend projects. Don’t wait for perfection – just start.
3. Embrace the learning curve You’ll wear many hats – marketer, accountant, customer service rep. Mistakes will happen, but they’re part of the process. Think of each setback as a lesson, not a failure.
4. Community is everything Whether it’s customers, fellow founders or local supporters – your network matters. Reach out, share your journey and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
5. Celebrate the small wins Got your first order? Made it through a tough week? Found the courage to say, “I run my own business”? That’s worth celebrating.
Entrepreneurship isn’t about having all the answers – it’s about having the heart to begin. And that’s something worth raising a toast to.

How many times have I felt terrible watching David Attenborough sigh at turtles tangled in plastic? And yet, how many times have I walked past rubbish in my local pond without doing a thing about it?
I admire Surfers Against Sewage. Cool people doing cool things to clean up cool places. But I’m no surfer, and I don’t live near the sea. So, when I saw they were running a clean-up – not on a beach, but at a suburban duck pond in Bromley – I grabbed my paddleboard and went to help.
Venue - Church House Gardens, Bromley
It was worse than I’d imagined. Filthy. Stagnant. A rank little puddle of neglect. But, as they say, a bad day on the paddleboard beats a good day in the office.
I met Andrew Stotesbury, the organiser – one of those people who turn outrage into action, complete with hi-vis vests and health & safety forms. Three police officers rocked up just as we were inflating our boards. I thought we were about to be shut down. Trespassing? Health & safety? But no – they were delighted we were cleaning the pond.
So, I pulled on my wellies, gloves, and important hi-vis, then paddled out onto what might be the most disgusting body of water I’ve ever floated on.
We joked that this might be a world-first: paddleboarding on Bromley duck pond. And then we got to work.
The haul?
 Two traffic cones
 A soggy stuffed unicorn
 A giant Christmas bauble
A Harrods bag weighed down with a brick, containing shoes, underwear, and an empty olive oil bottle (???).
⚽ Lost footballs, broken tennis rackets, half a skateboard, and of course, countless bottles and cups.
A French passer-by stopped to chat, horrified by how we treat our parks. “In France,” she said, “we respect our green and blue spaces more.” I munched on some Hula Hoops, then looked at the plastic packet in my hand differently. Two minutes of crunching. 500 years of waste.
By the time we finished, we were muddy, stinking, exhausted, but we’d made a difference.
It was strangely rewarding and a bizarrely enjoyable paddleboarding trip.
If you fancy making a difference too, check out the Surfers Against Sewage Million Mile Clean. You don’t need a surfboard. You don’t even need the sea. Just a couple of hours and a willingness to get your hands dirty.
