The Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square is donated to us by Norway as a thank you for our support in the Second World War. The very first tree was donated in 1947. The tree came by ship to the Surrey Commercial Docks in London to be unloaded. My father was a Stevedore in the docks at this time and was part of the gang that unloaded the tree. As an eight-year-old child, he took me into the docks (with or without permission). He took me onto the ship and sat me up on the tree. I had never seen a tree so big. It had a lovely pine aroma - still remembered! So, my claim to fame is that I was the first child to see and touch the very first Christmas tree from Norway in 1947. Maureen Perrin

The coffee shop by PAM PREEDY

We all have our favourite coffee shop. Which is yours? Starbucks, Costa or one of the speciality coffee emporia? They are proliferating everywhere. In the last few months three new coffee shops; Gail’s, Bread Ahead and the Black Sheep Coffee shop, have opened in the pedestrianised area near the Metro Bank, often next door to established shops such as Café Nero and Pret. Once you arrive at the venue of choice you are faced with further choices: Americano, latte, cappuccino; with and without caffeine. Then, there is the variety of milks: oat milk, various nut milks including coconut and hazel. They try to please all tastes. From Orpington to Petts Wood and Chislehurst, wherever two or three shops come together, there is likely to be a shop selling coffee. Coffee can be traced back through the centuries to the ancient coffee forests of the Ethiopian plateau. There are various stories about how the coffee bean gained Kudos for its energy-giving qualities and, when turned into a drink in a monastery, would sustain the monks through long hours of evening prayer. Gradually the popularity of coffee made its way north and east to the Middle East. The first coffee house is thought to have opened in 1550 in Constantinople, (Istanbul), poised to enter Europe and ultimately England. Coffee houses became taverns without the alcohol and provided social activities, such as conversation, listening to music and watching various performers, but most of all to keep up with the current news. There were those, such as a Venetian clergymen, who dubbed it the “bitter invention of Satan” in 1615. Pope Clement VIII decided to taste it and found it so satisfying that he gave it papal approval.

Coffee houses in Constantinople became important centres for the exchange of information and became known as “Schools of the Wise.” In England they were known as “penny universities” because, for the price of a penny, one could purchase a cup of coffee and engage in stimulating conversation. By the middle of the 17th century, it was seen that the quality of the work improved by those who had switched from tea to coffee. There were over 300 coffee houses in London, many of which attracted like-minded patrons; merchants, brokers and artists. Many businesses grew out of specialised coffee emporia; Lloyds of London grew out of the Edward Lloyd Coffee house. It was also a place for spies to hear ‘interesting pieces’ of information for their spy-masters because the patronage was fluid and there was plenty to overhear. In 1714, the Mayor of Amsterdam presented a young coffee seedling to King Louis XIV which was planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens of Paris. In 1723, a young naval officer Gabriel de Clieu received a seedling and braved horrendous weather, a sabotage attempt to destroy the seedling and a pirate attack to get it to Martinique where it thrived, and is thought to have led to the proliferation of over 18 million trees. At first the Americans favoured tea, but in 1773 the colonists revolted against the heavy tax on it – The Boston Tea Party. They quickly changed their habits. Thomas Jefferson (3rd American President 1801-1808) referred to “Coffee: the favourite drink of the civilised world.” It is interesting to look at the popularity of coffee in Bromley. The Bush Directory for 1900 records two Coffee Taverns and five Coffee Houses: in Chatterton Road, East Street, Simpsons Road and Palace Road, often run by ladies and therefore not considered a commercial venture. By 1924 Kelly’s Directory recorded only two; in Chatterton Road and Palace Road. By the 1940s, there were only two real coffee shops in Bromley, Wilsons (above Robert Dyas) and the Importers Retail Salesroom Ltd (now Carpet Right). The coffee habit is increasingly popular, brought into Britain from America; a place to socialise with friends, conduct work meetings, read and now, at the same time, people can buy snacks and choose ‘take-away’ coffees.

community NOTICEBOARD More than just a walk in the park Have you heard of ParkBathe? It's a peer-led green health movement using forest bathing that is spreading throughout green spaces in Bromley and the south east to help with:

• Mitigating social isolation and loneliness • Helping women feel safe in urban parks • Connecting local people • Showing how you can experience nature connection in a busy urban park

This is an initiative led by the community for the community and is 1. An accessible 1 hour free guided, slow and silent stroll through an urban green space that gets you "into your senses & out of your thoughts." 2. Uses mindfulness, forest school and forest bathing to encourage relaxation and lower anxiety for groups of 2-10 people. 3. Adaptable for all ages and abilities and specialised groups eg. families of children with ADHD/women who are fearful of walking alone/older people. 4. Aims to combat health inequalities by providing peer-led walks - i.e. "guided by the community for the community." 5. Provides a 'health map' for social prescribers offering a free continuous and consistent wellbeing service 'a bus-ride away.' 6. Our study with Derby university saw an overall 40% reduction in anxiety and a 50% reduction in 'over-thinking' after a 1 hr walk.

The January Challenge Charity 64 Million Artists has launched its 11th January Challenge with a call to action for people to sign up for the free daily creative challenges by email – and to encourage people who would like to become Creativity Champions for their community to get involved. Each day throughout January, one Creativity Champion offers a suggestion for creative thinking, making, seeing and doing. The January Challenge activities are all free, accessible and are available in person at local workshops and online. Since 2012, every year over 50,000 people across the UK have explored their individual creativity with The January Challenge, which is designed to boost creativity during the gloomiest month of the year and improve well-being and happiness. Michael Rosen, Poet says: “The January Challenge is a lovely idea for people to think about the fact that you've got creativity inside you. Everybody has - they're doing gardening and thinking, ‘Well, I'll put this over there, and do this over there, I'll just try that out’ - that's actually creativity! If you just name five of the major problems of the world, or whatever it is, you can be sure that they need creative ways of dealing with them. Because if you're not creative about them, you'll just repeat your mistakes. So we need creativity. When you put something out there, either onto a piece of paper, or what you've actually done, is taken something out of your head, and this enables you to look at yourself taking you beyond feeling satisfied, it takes you into a kind of serenity.” Nigel Clarke, founder of Dadvengers and CBeebies’ presenter said: “I think The January Challenge is amazing. It's really accessible for people because it just allows people to get into whatever might interest them. One creative prompt could be paints and things like that and another one could be music. I do a lot of work with parents and families and I started something called Dadvengers, we're using that platform to share The January Challenge creative prompts for families and specifically for dads and men to get involved as it's usually a little bit more difficult to get men involved in creative activities.”

Charity appeal lunch for Ukraine

The Mayor of Bromley is teaming up with Bromley Borough Rotary Clubs to help raise funds for Rotary’s Ukraine project to support civilians with medical needs, shelter, generators and household items. It takes place on Sunday 21st January at The Warren, Croydon Road, Hayes, BR2 7AL. £35 per person for three courses Bookings and payment to be made by Friday 5th January. SUPPORTING LOCAL AUTHORS… Dena Scott retired from the legal profession four years ago at the age of 68. She has lived in Orpington most of her life and is married with two sons who are in theirs 40s. The title of her book is ‘A Man of No Substance’ and was published in 2022. Dena said: “I had always enjoyed writing but with my career and family I couldn’t dedicate a great deal of time to writing. My experience was to write a few chapters and then return to them whenever possible. Retirement allowed me to focus and finally finish my book. I think my story would appeal to readers who enjoy the era of post WWII – programmes like Dads Army and The Land Girls. However, it is not a war story as the timing is set after the war.” Dena’s book covers several emotions including love, betrayal and distrust and she is in the process of writing a sequel. London Biggin Hill Airport’s Res cue & Firefighting Service took part in a 24-hour tyre flip fundraiser to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Mon th, which took place last year. We are currently coming through a very challenging time for policing here in Bromley, and throughout London. We have all seen in the news the impact that the Middle East conflict has had on the communities of London. As the Commissioner said earlier this week, there has been a significant rise in hate crime affecting every area. We continue to encourage the public to report all incidents of hate crime to us so they can be investigated fully, and we will support victims in every way we can. This has had other knock on consequences, with the ongoing need to provide Bromley officers both to police central London demonstrations, and to assist in investigating the rise in hate crime. As a result, you may have noticed in recent weeks that your neighbourhood officers haven’t been as visible as I would have liked, but this has sadly been unavoidable due to the current demands across the capital and our officers are under significant pressure. I wish to publically note my thanks for

This month we are holding our first Retail Crime working group across a wide range of partners to target assaults and abuse of retail workers, along with reducing shoplifting. In March, we are holding the Bromley Anti-Social Behaviour Conference to fully understand the problem and how to tackle it together. My officers remain committed to listening to the problems affecting Bromley borough residents and working on solving them. This remains underpinned by a strong partnership and regular meetings with the council, Fire Brigade, Health services and many others to ensure we are progressing on what matters. Throughout the course of the evening guests enjoyed a pre-dinner Champagne reception and a delectable three-course meal; had access to a pic ‘n’ mix sweet cart and fun photo booth; enjoyed the awards ceremony and danced the night away with ABBA classic songs from tribute band, ABBA Magic. The event also helped raise a total of £1,050 for the MumMum Foundation, one of the Mayor’s charities this year, where guests took part in a fun ‘head and tails’ game to win a hamper worth over £70. Yesterday's child: A new year eulogy

I have lived in Bromley for almost a century, and feel privileged to be able to weigh the balances between progress and disappointment in the place of my birth. Progress there has undoubtedly been, but sadly much of the borough has been spoiled physically and irrevocably over recent years. I cannot bear to think about such too much. Sufficient it is to say that we have lost so many old friends, replaced by treks to the ever-expanding supermarket, where often quality is not always the criterion. Repeated street disruption promotes hazard, but this we have also had to endure. Of yesterday we have of course the inevitable memories. Gone are the days of childhood, where wandering around toy-department stores (of which there were several at Christmastide) lit up the eyes of seasonal childhood. Just as days of delight with anything and everything could be compared with similarities as always sustaining and welcoming various others. As a child I recall vividly being taken by my mother (my grocer father was dealing with turkeys at his Market Square outlet in David Greig's) in order to examine suitable family gifts for all and sundry! (Perhaps mainly for me, or so I imagined!)

The Co-op in Widmore Road had a wonderful Toy Department wherein were mouth-watering gifts within a range of toys on offer. The ever-welcoming FW Medhurst in the Market Square was the top of the tree and has never been superseded. Its magical southern (removed from here) corridor entrance provided a spinetingling experience which included exciting Punch and Judy land! Much I would enjoy both here and later when Santa Claus would find his way to our bedsides! Yuletide is past another year, but memories of past seasons remain and will do for all time. And why not? For this is the stuff of which the human spirit is made up. And as through the years memories remain, so will the urge to do what one can to keep for ever the spirit of Christmas. As for the hostilities of war which were, of course, frightful, there were signs of(removed) human considerations and kindnesses of our fellowmen in the face of adversity and nothing can erase them. The wonders of VE Day stamped an indelible mark on my life. (removed) I shall never forget the thrill of awakening on May 8th 1945 - VE Day -to the sight of our front garden host to the beams of searchlights. These had been set up overnight to transform, as best they could, the broken but yet ever hopeful parish church tower clock! Such was a day never to be forgotten, as it were by its celebrations and its joys. Years have passed, but not the sights and sounds of that truly memorable day. Nothing indeed can erase its excitement and its pleasures. (removed) To all who have ever lived and loved in this beautiful part of the world, A happy New Year!
