Welcome to

Welcome to the very first issue of Life In Beckenham, your new monthly magazine that celebrates local people and really gets behind the concept of community.

The aim of Life In Beckenham is two-fold; to report on positive, uplifting and inspiring stories and news in our community and to encourage you to shop local. It’s estimated that for every £1 spent locally, 63p of that stays in the local economy, meaning that you’re helping to make where you live a better place. So please pay special attention to the advertisers in this magazine; every time you shop with a local business, they do a celebratory dance in their head!

We’d love to hear your thoughts – it could be what you’d like us to report on, your feel-good community stories or public ‘thank you’s’, local hero nominations, your photos or just what you like about our borough! The ‘Star Response’ every month receives a £15 One4All voucher, courtesy of The Bed Post – and there’s every chance it could be you!

Meanwhile, to get your mitts on the June issue (out in May), you can do one of 3 things:

1. Pick up a copy from the wonderful stockists located throughout Beckenham (see the stockists on page 34)

2. Sign up to receive a digital copy straight to your inbox – for free. Visit www.lifeinmagazines.co.uk

3. Receive a postal copy through your letterbox every month for just £24 by emailing us at hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk

In the meantime, thanks for reading our debut Life In Beckenham magazine –we hope you enjoy this issue as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together!

Local Hero...

(Because not all heroes wear capes)

Christine Atkinson

Mark Browne nominated Christine Atkinson for the help she does for the community via the Rotary Club. Mark said: “Christine is always highlighting issues that Rotary Club are addressing. She had done a lot for the Ukraine effort organising events and raising money for the cause and is very passionate about what she does. She attends fairs and different functions, supporting many events and helping the youth in many ways.”

How does it feel to be nominated as a local hero?  It’s a great surprise as I’ve never thought of myself as a ‘hero’. I’m just passionate about the causes that the Rotary supports.

How you got involved in the Rotary?

When I retired 15 years ago I decided to see what Rotary was about. The first thing that jumped out was its 35-year plus project to eradicate polio, as my mother was disabled with polio when I was just four years old, which had a massive impact on the family.

You’ve done a lot of charity work via the Rotary – what were the more memorable projects?

There are many but being Polio Champion was a big one when I administered the distribution of hundreds of jars of jam, donated by TipTree to raise funds, all over the district. I also arranged for 50 Rotarians to climb the O2, which raised more funds. Every pound raised by Rotary becomes three with the support of The Bill Gates Foundation, allowing us to vaccinate infants. My proudest moment was securing Ade Adepitan as one of our Ambassadors for End Polio Now. There was also the Rotary Work Club, put together during lockdown with a number of wonderful people who came forward to help those who had lost their jobs. On Ukraine Independence Day we arranged an event of games, entertainment and dinosaurs to help the many Ukrainian children who now call Bromley home whilst waiting to be able to safely return home. My most recent project has been coordinating funding for sponsorship of a group called Ravens Chat at Bromley Football Club - a growing group for loneliness and mental health which supports Sporting Memories for Bromley residents with oncoming Alzheimer's and dementia.

Why is it important for you to get involved in helping charities and with volunteering?  I’ve had the privilege of travelling all over the world and wanted to ‘give back’ when retiring. I wanted to do something worthwhile and with a sense of purpose, so felt

With Ade, our End Polio Now Ambassador

that an organisation with high humanitarian focus and an international reach was the solution.

Can you tell us about the annual Youth Awards?

A great area of focus for Rotary is youth and we hold many competitions such as Young Chef, Young Musician, Young Artist and Young Photographer etc, and together with Youth Awards this helps to motivate the next generation by recognising special contributions. Hopefully Rotarians of the future!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?  Well, there aren’t many of those hours but I still enjoy travelling when possible. Eating out and not having to cook is always a pleasure.

What are your plans and projects for this year?  I really hope to develop and embed Rotary’s connection with Bromley Football Community Trust as the synergy is very in sync.

What does community mean to you?

Collaboration, relationship development and caring for our fellow human beings. Be nice, be kind and be humble.

If people are looking to become members of the Rotary, what can they expect and how does it work?

As well as charitable activities there are opportunities for professional development and training programmes, which I understand would be very expensive elsewhere.

If you would like more information about Bromley Rotary Club see https://www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/ homepage.php?ClubID=699

MAYOR’S VOICE community

It was the greatest honour to be named Mayor of Bromley last year. I have lived in Bromley for 44 years and brought up four wonderful children here. My year as Mayor presented me with the opportunity to give something back to the community that has given me so much. When I accepted the position of Mayor, I said I wanted to visit every corner of the borough and residents from all walks of life.

As my fulfilling time as Bromley’s Mayor starts to draw to a close, I find myself fondly reflecting on all those I have met during these visits and all that has been achieved during my tenure.

I have had the pleasure of joining so many community events with schools, care homes, businesses and charities - and everything in-between. There has been no shortage of occasions for residents to come together, be that for recent Easter holidays and or various other religion festivals that I and the Deputy Mayor have attended, or countless other festivities across the borough throughout the year.

We have been holding a whole range of events to raise

Lines from Linda

There’s something very happy about May. It is mid spring, although nowadays we can’t vouch for the spring weather. However, we can guarantee two extra days holiday. May Day, the first Monday, and Bank Holiday Monday, the last Monday.

As a child I used to love watching the May Day Carnival. The floats went through our local high street. In the front float was the year’s pretty May Queen along with her princesses, waving at the onlookers, as they cheered her through the streets. How I longed to be one of the pretty ladies on the float. In those days there was the choosing of the May Queen and her princesses. First, there was the advert in the local paper; if you were aged between 12 and 18, you turned up at the given location, accompanied by an appropriate adult, and a board of women and men chose their queen and princesses.

funds for my chosen charities – Orpington Sea Cadets, PTSD999 and The MumMum Foundation. Through various meals, quiz nights and matches with my bowls and golf teams, we have been supporting the incredible work these charities do each day, with further events still to come!

With many more events still in the calendar, I hope to meet as many of you as possible in my remaining time as Mayor and then hope my successor has just as enjoyable a year as I have serving as your Mayor and celebrating the importance of coming together.

Cllr Mike Botting

Mayor of Bromley (2023-24)

In those days, on the ascending part of the bus, where the conductor stood, there was a floor to ceiling pole. I stood there holding onto the pole and leaning out, so the wind blew through my hair. I was feeling very glamorous and grown-up. Then I lost my balance and the next thing I had slipped. My feet and legs were on the ground, being dragged along, as I hung on for dear life with my hands onto the pole. My father jumped up and grabbed me. Everyone was shouting. The bus came to an immediate halt. I was hoisted back onto the bus, the skin on my legs had been peeled away and underneath was full of grit and tiny stones. Everyone was telling me how stupid I was. Which of course I was. I hadn’t actually done any major damage, but my legs were a sight, and the hem of my dress was in tatters.

As a child I used to love watching the May Day Carnival "

Needless to say, we missed the carnival queen picking. We spent the afternoon in A and E at the local hospital, having grit and dirty stones dug from my legs.

Knowing I was keen to fulfil my young dream, my mum dressed me in my prettiest dress, and brushed my hair till it shone. I persuaded her to lend me her heeled shoes, and I borrowed some of her mascara. Voila, I was ready. It was a bus ride away. My dad took me. We climbed up on the bus (I struggled a little in the heels). I decided not to sit down so as not to crease my pretty blue, flowery, cotton dress.

5 Minutes With Captain Peter Adams VSM

Captain Adams has over 30 years flying experience, much of which has been on search and find missions. He has flown numerous aircraft, including the Spitfire Mk 9. Two decades ago he founded Air Search, a voluntary organisation that is made up of volunteers who donate their time and aircraft to the emergency services to provide eyes in the sky, aerial reconnaissance and photography. Captain Adams lives in Orpington with his wife Elizabeth, and has two grown up sons and four grandchildren.

Hello Captain Adams! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’ve always been interested in aviation, and it has taken me in three directions: the Biggin Hill International Air Fair, where I ended up Director of Charities at the shows, I trained as a pilot and I’ve done a lot of fundraising for the military.

How did you get involved in Air Search?

Some 20 years ago I was asked by a retiring RAF officer if I could help support the emergency services from the air, so I founded Air Search. We’ve helped in multiple operations, from finding people in distress to monitoring the air when we hosted the Olympics.

What aircraft do you fly?

I’ve just sold my plane and retrained in a Gyrocopter (a helicopter that requires a short  runway for take-off but can land straight down). I can now hover above someone in distress and wait for rescue to arrive.

Where did your love of aviation come from?

I used to cycle to Biggin Hill as a young man just after the

second world war and sit on the bomb shelters watching the fighters taking off and training. I then became an ATC Cadet in Shirley and when I was 25, took up flying and trained with an RAF Squadron Leader as a flying pilot in the 1960s.

Air Search is entirely voluntary; how does it work and how can people get involved?

I have a number of pilots who give their time for free and we train observers to join us on flights. They come from all walks of life, from solicitors to plumbers. We are not a charity; we are a group of people who want to give back. An average hourly flight on a four-seater aircraft is around £200 an hour, so the observers will be asked to make a contribution of £30 when they join. If someone is fit, local and healthy they can volunteer to train as an observer. We are always looking for observers and also need more pilots. Many pilots aren’t even aware that we exist. They might want a reason to fly more, and we give them something to focus on.

How many people are members of the organisation?

We have 25 pilots and observers and averaged about 100 jobs last year. We do a lot of training; an observer needs to take good aerial photographs at 80mph, as well as be trained in observation, because if you’re part of a crew the pilot will expect you to look out for other aircraft. The pilot’s job will be to fly a search pattern whilst talking to air traffic control, and the observer will take pictures which we send directly to the emergency services.

Do you have time for other interests in your busy life?

My two other interests are classic cars and fundraising. I was contacted by the RAF and asked if I’d raise money for them 20 years ago and we’ve raised over £4 million since then.

What does community mean to you?

It’s everything. Most of my adult life has been spent supporting the community. I like to think the footsteps I’ve walked in life will stay in place through the charity work we’ve done, such as helping raise funds to build hospitals.

HANNAH GRAY

I am truly honoured to have been chosen as the Conservative Candidate for Beckenham and Penge ahead of the General Election. It is with great pride that I look forward to representing our community, a place that has been my home for nearly 17 years.

As we prepare for the election, I am more determined than ever to connect with the residents of Beckenham and Penge. The recent boundary changes have brought us all together, and I am eager to listen to your concerns and aspirations, as I visit every corner of our new constituency.

my plan To secure a better future for Beckenham and Penge

Re-open Penge and West Wickham Police bases. I want our neighbourhood police to be in the neighbourhood, with new bases for the 3,666 additional o cers.

A new secondary school for Kent House. I’ll work with the government and council to get this new school, so fewer kids have to go to school in other boroughs.

Invest in the PRUH and Beacon. The Conservatives are investing £20m in a new Cancer unit at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH).

Extra Capacity on Local Bus and Rail Services. I want to see new bus, tram and overground services to reduce overcrowding on bus, tram and rail services.

Support Jobs and Opportunity. Over 5,000 new apprenticeships have been started locally since 2010.

Stop Pay-Per-Mile. The war on motorists needs to stop and particularly Project Detroit – the programme planning to charge you for every single mile you drive.

Etymology

Beckenham’s name has AngloSaxon origins, with the place dating back to at least 1086 when it appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 under the name of Bacheham. The name is thought to be derived from the Old English words “beohha” and “ham”, potentially meaning “Beohha’s homestead” or “Beohha’s village”. The River Beck was most likely named after this!

Local Landmarks

Did you know that the Chinese Garage is a listed building? Originally built in 1928, it was designed in the style of a Japanese pagoda and first opened as a petrol station. In 2001, it was voted the most unusual garage in England!

Keeping Safe

Beckenham’s borough of Bromley is, as of 2023, the seventh safest borough in the whole of London!

Green & Clean

David Bowie’s Early Days

The legendary musician David Bowie spent part of his childhood living on Foxgrove Road, here in Beckenham! The Three Tuns pub (now Zizzi) is where Bowie set up Beckenham Arts Lab and as a collective, they hosted a free festival at the Croydon Road Recreation Ground in 1969. The bandstand at which they played has also recently been restored!

LOVINGLOCAL:

Transport Links

Amajor transport hub, Beckenham Junction provides easy access to Central London. Alongside a comprehensive bus network across the whole of London and trams into SouthWest London, living in Beckenham leaves you very well connected!

Did you know that Beckenham’s borough of Bromley is the greenest in the city? Many of our parks and green spaces have been awarded the Green Flag, a scheme by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy to recognise green spaces that are clean and well managed. Bromley was also ranked 1st in 2023 for the highest recycling rates across all London boroughs.

Music, Culture & Creativity

Historical Roots

Although early written history tells us little about the area, relics from both the Bronze and Iron Ages were found locally and reveal evidence of settlers! On the land of Langley Park, a Bronze Age metalwork hoard was found comprising axes and weapon fragments.

Family Days Out

As the greenest borough in the city, parents have a wide selection of parks and playgrounds to take their kids to. Many have a café so you can grab a hot drink whilst your kids run wild! Quality of Life

Last year, Beckenham was recognised as one of the ‘Best places to live in London’ by The Times and was championed for its natural beauty and abundance of green spaces.

Historic Churches

At the centre of Beckenham stands St George’s Church, showcasing historically significant and impressive architecture. Not only is it the centre point of the village, but it also has one of the oldest lych gates in England! Although the current building is the result of extensive rebuilding towards the end of the 19th century, an earlier version of the Church dates back to around 1100.

Green Spaces

In Beckenham, we’ve got sports for all… With Beckenham Town FC, Beckenham Cricket Club, Beckenham Tennis Club and Beckenham Running Club (to name a few!), make sure to get involved!

Here are just 20 of them!

Don’t forget about Mytime Active’s leisure centre in West Wickham! And of course, Beckenham Place Park hosts a weekly Parkrun at 9AM every Saturday!

Literary Hub

From High Street chains to local independent stores and boutiques, Beckenham provides a diverse shopping experience and truly has something for everyone! Back in the middle of the 19th century, the arrival of the railway at Shortlands ensured the borough and Beckenham’s destiny to be an important local centre of commerce!

Local Markets

The weekly Food & Farmer’s Market takes place at Beckenham Place Park every Sunday, and offers a selection of artisanal products, freshly baked sweet treats, and delicious street food! Multiple antique and vintage fairs are also scheduled throughout the year. L cal Love

We asked residents and local businesses in the Beckenham community what they love about living or working in the area. Here are their thoughts...

“Beckenham is a great place to live and work, with a village feel, fab cafes and restaurants, beautiful parks and excellent public transport links. I love supporting the local business community to thrive here and am proud to call Beckenham my home.”

Jane Rogers, Chair, Beckenham Business Association

“Beckenham's local parks are a particular draw for me as I love walking and regularly explore the Green Chain walks in the borough and the surrounding areas. It also offers ease of access for commuting to London and other routes around the South-East, for work, business, and leisure.”

Denise Meade-Hill, Beckenham Resident

“Having worked in the Metropolitan Police Service for 24 years, I have spent the last five working as a Safer Neighbourhoods Sergeant in Beckenham, and I plan to retire here. It’s a great place to work not only because of the vibrant high street and beautiful green spaces, but the variety of opportunities we get to help and engage with local residents. Beckenham has a thriving business community who are heavily involved with our ward panel, a panel that meets every quarter to discuss local issues and help set local policing priorities. The ward panel is open to everyone, please contact us at coperscopeSNT@met.police.uk or ShortlandsSNT@met.police.uk if you want to be a part of shaping your Beckenham neighbourhood.”

Del Simcox, Safer Neighbourhoods Sergeant in Beckenham

“I’ve lived in Beckenham for more than half my life. When I was ill, my sister did some shopping for me and she was amazed that all the shopkeepers said hello to her, even though they didn’t know her! It’s a friendly oasis on the edge of London.”

Barrie, Beckenham Resident

“I have worked in Beckenham for 40 years and whilst it’s a great place to be, it’s the people that make it great! It has a real community feel to it.”

Chris Penfold, Deens Garage

“As an independent business owner of over 12 years, I have enjoyed every single moment in Beckenham as there has always been real community support & customer loyalty. It’s an absolute pleasure & a privilege to have a business in such a wonderful area.”

Emine Mazloum, Em’s Kitchen

“First job at sweet sixteen – a bank in Beckenham. Half a century later, I’m an author in the same area. Says it all really.”

Val Portelli, Beckenham Resident

“Beckenham is a lovely place to live! You would never go hungry or thirsty with its great pubs and lovely restaurants… it caters for all tastes! We have lovely shops, parks, good bus routes, and the tram is very handy as well. Beckenham has a great community spirit, and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!”

Linda Formaggi, Beckenham Resident

"Having run my businesses for 22+ years from Beckenham (I’ve lived here for 43 years – where else would I want to be!)  and from working and supporting the local business community, I know it’s a vibrant, proactive town that is packed with the most amazing restaurants! We need never cook at home! It has the most beautiful parks and “green spots” and is a real transport hub for anywhere you wish to travel.”

Jackie Groundsell, 1230 The Women’s Company

“My grandparents, parents and I lived in Beckenham from c.1926 to 2001, most in the same road – St. James’s Avenue. Beckenham has so many main line stations to London from Hayes and Orpington as well as great parks.”

Jane Datoo, Beckenham Resident

“When you get tired of living in Beckenham, you are tired of life. Great transport network, fabulous cafes and restaurants, parks, gyms, swimming pools, Beckenham Beacon, cinema, and of course David Bowie amongst others.

Peter Ayres, Beckenham Resident

“So many great memories, laughs, and a wonderful community spirit.”

Elizabeth Hardman, Beckenham Resident

Beckenham & West Wickham MRC

Have you heard of Beckenham & West Wickham Model Railway Club? Founded in 1950, it is an active club promoting all aspects of railway modelling. The club holds community days during half terms, a free Open Day for the community, plus two one-day exhibitions during the year as well as days out for educational trips. It has a small membership which meets every Thursday evening at St George's Church Hall in Beckenham.

The group’s Chairman & Exhibition Manager, Greg Marshall said: “Our exhibitions at Forest Hill provide an enjoyable day out for our local community, other local model railway community groups and club members to share our love for the hobby in all aspects. Model Railways are not just about watching the trains go round. There are considerable skills required to construct a successful operating model railway – woodworking to construct the baseboards, wiring and electronics for switches and controls, computer skills for controlling trains and setting routes and artistry in creating convincing scenes to name a few. Other skills such as problem-solving, maintenance, communication and inter-personal skills come into play.

The Adventures of Doctor Dolittle  (plus your chance to WIN!)

Come and enjoy this tale of great kindness in May half term, with the first of this year’s Illyria performances at The Festival Theatre at Hever Castle. Taking place in the Twos Sisters’ Theatre with undercover, allocated seating, the venue’s easy access, open-air auditorium is an ideal, stress free environment for family theatre. Doctor Dolittle leads a simple life as the village doctor in sleepy Puddleby-On-The-Marsh. He often undercharges his patients, or even treats them for free, so he is terribly poor. But one day, with the help of his wise old parrot Polynesia, he makes an extraordinary discovery: that he can talk to animals. Hugh Lofting’s timeless classic celebrates the power of empathy and inspires audiences young and old to see the world through the eyes of animals. This funny, exciting new family musical is performed with flair and wit by Illyria in the great outdoors.

For details see heverfestival.co.uk

Both heart-breaking and heart-warming, this book will remind you how significantly you can touch the lives of those around you. The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a quick and compelling read, making it the perfect book to help you smash any 2024 reading goals.

Now he teaches others how to improve their mental performance. His message is that the human mind is our ultimate superpower and that all behaviour is driven by belief.

In this easy to digest book Kwik highlights how we can accomplish more—more productivity, more transformation, more personal success, more business achievement—by changing our mindset, motivation and methods and creating unstoppable momentum. The book is easy to follow, relatable and offers practical techniques that can help change habits. Kwik’s back story, coupled with his strategies to boost mental performance, left me with a ‘can-do’ attitude and a belief that I could memorise daily lists, such as a short shopping list, without the fear of forgetting anything.

History

The coffee shop

We all have our favourite coffee shop, which is yours? Starbucks, Costa or one of the speciality coffee emporia?

They are proliferating everywhere. Coffee shops are ‘popping up’ throughout Beckenham; from Beckenham Junction Station along the High Street opposite St George’s Church, it seems to be a mecca for them. Once you arrive at the venue of choice you are faced with further choices: Americano, latte, cappuccino; with and without caffeine. Then, there is the variety of milks: oat milk, various nut milks including coconut and hazel. They try to please all tastes. From Beckenham to Bromley; Orpington to Petts Wood and Chislehurst, wherever two or three shops come together, there is likely to be a shop selling coffee.

Coffee can be traced back through the centuries to the ancient coffee forests of the Ethiopian plateau. There are various stories about how the coffee bean gained Kudos for its energy-giving qualities and, when turned into a drink in a monastery, would sustain the monks through long hours of evening prayer.

Gradually the popularity of coffee made its way north and east to the Middle East. The first coffee house is thought to have opened in 1550 in Constantinople, (Istanbul), poised to enter Europe and ultimately England. Coffee houses became taverns without the alcohol and provided social activities, such as conversation, listening to music and watching various performers, but most of all to keep up with the current news. There were those, such as a Venetian clergymen, who dubbed it the “bitter invention of Satan” in 1615. Pope Clement VIII decided to taste it and found it so satisfying that he gave it papal approval. Coffee houses in Constantinople became important centres for the exchange of information and became

known as “Schools of the Wise.” In England they were known as “penny universities” because, for the price of a penny, one could purchase a cup of coffee and engage in stimulating conversation. By the middle of the 17th century, it was seen that the quality of the work improved by those who had switched from tea to coffee. There were over 300 coffee houses in London, many of which attracted like-minded patrons; merchants, brokers and artists. Many businesses grew out of specialised coffee emporia; Lloyds of London grew out of the Edward Lloyd Coffee house. It was also a place for spies to hear ‘interesting pieces’ of information for their spy-masters because the patronage was fluid and there was plenty to overhear.

In 1714, the Mayor of Amsterdam presented a young coffee seedling to King Louis XIV which was planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens of Paris. In 1723, a young naval officer Gabriel de Clieu received a seedling and braved horrendous weather, a sabotage attempt to destroy the seedling and a pirate attack to get it to Martinique where it thrived, and is thought to have led to the proliferation of over 18 million trees.

At first the Americans favoured tea, but in 1773 the colonists revolted against the heavy tax on it – The Boston Tea Party. They quickly changed their habits. Thomas Jefferson (3rd American President 1801-1808) referred to “Coffee: the favourite drink of the civilised world.” It is interesting to look at the popularity of coffee in Beckenham and Bromley. Thornton’s Directory for 1902 records a Mrs Alleeson’s coffee rooms at 42 Chancery Lane. By 1911 she had clearly branched out and expanded into 13a Wickham Road. Back to 1902 Henry Clarke was running a coffee tavern at 55 Parish Lane as was George Heard at 17 Croydon Road, Elmers End. By 1911 the popularity of coffee shops had dwindled. The coffee habit is increasingly popular, brought into Britain from America. It’s a place to socialise with friends, have work meetings, read, buy snacks and choose to ‘eat-in’ or ‘take-away’ – where’s your favourite?

INSIGHTS FROM THE SUPER

As spring arrives and the rain (hopefully) starts to finally subside, we are now planning phase 2 of our work to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour in the borough, with a follow up conference in June to look at real action and deliverables.

The first conference worked to understand and separate the issues into clear themes. We can then come up with bespoke plans to tackle this using problem-solving methodology as a whole partnership that encompasses police, fire brigade, local authority, health, police ward panels, the community and many others.

In May we will be holding our second Retail Crime Working Group, to try and make retail spaces safer for residents and retail workers, with a key focus on tackling shoplifting, stolen goods markets and assaults on staff. We have made some great progress, including a partnership with the Drug and Alcohol Service to target our most prolific offenders

with Criminal Behaviour Orders. These look to both exclude offenders from the areas they offend by law, and require them to seek help if they have substance misuse issues to try and address the root causes of offending. The group has also grown with more retailers represented to give their views, plus an improved commitment from us to share relevant data to help us combat this problem together.

Road safety continues to be a community priority, with our new speed gun now set to be deployed, with around 25 and growing cohort of officers who can issue fines to speeding drivers. We now have three handheld speed guns and will be doing operations most days somewhere in the borough. We considered this carefully, but are acting in clear response to community concerns to create a deterrent to this which creates clear danger on our roads. Please drive safely!

Firefront line..

I’m privileged and honoured to be the London Fire Brigade Borough Commander here in Bromley. I look forward to working with the local community and our partners to make Bromley a safer place to live and work. I’m looking forward to sharing with you our activities across the services we provide here in Bromley in future editions.

We believe that the best way to keep Londoners safe from fire is to help you understand common risks and reduce them in your home. Here are some of our firefighters' top tips to keep you safe:

Cooking: Even if you're a very careful cook, accidents can happen – so it's a good idea to know what to do. If a pan catches fire, there are four steps to take to stay safe:

• Don't tackle the fire yourself and don't try to move the pan.

• Never throw water over a fire as it could create a fireball.

• Turn off the heat – but only if it's safe to do so.

• Leave the room, close the door, shout a warning to others and call 999.

Candles: Over 200 fires at home involved candles last year. Although they create a gorgeous warm glow, candles need to be handled with care. In 2020, over 200 fires in London were connected to candle use.

That's why we recommend you swap your wax candles for 'flameless' candles such as LED tea lights.

Our online home fire safety checker tool allows you to carry out a thorough check of your home in only a few minutes. It’s simple and practical – giving you specific advice for your family and your home. CAT GROOMING TIPS (FOR A SHINY COAT & CONTENTED CAT)

Cats love being brushed and groomed, and it is important for cat owners to make it part of their routine as it helps to bond with them and keep your cat contented, says pet insurer petGuard.

The company’s marketing manager, James Whitten, said: “Regular grooming contributes towards the preventative care of the cats by stopping them swallowing dead hair while they self-groom and reducing the likelihood of them coughing up any nasty furballs. Regular grooming also allows the owner to spot anything unusual, which might be worth being checked by a vet.”

Watch out for bloat!

This is our late dobermann Beau. After surviving surgery for GDV (bloat) in 2008 we set up a bloat awareness campaign. We were helped enormously by numerous vets, The Royal Kennel Club and the dog press. Nine years after Beau's passing his legacy lives on.

This beautiful dog, Beau, would have died if his owners hadn't recognised that he had bloat and rushed him to the vet immediately.

If you experience a combination of the following:

• Your dog retches from the throat but nothing is produced, other than a small amount of frothy mucus

• Your dog tries to defaecate unsuccessfully

• Your dog adopts the 'Sphinx' position

• Your dog's tummy goes hard and / or swells up like a balloon and is as taut as drumskin

• Your dog is trying to bite, or worry, the abdomen

• Your dog is very unsettled

Contact your vet immediately. Bloat is a true emergency - be prepared to drive to the surgery straightaway. The chance of survival decreases alarmingly if you delay getting the dog to the surgery more than 60-90 minutes after the first signs – it could save your dog's life.

For more information email info@safedog.co.uk with BLOAT as the subject or join our Canine Bloat Awareness group on Facebook.

Tips for grooming

• It might take a while for a cat to get used to being groomed, so until then keep sessions short and sweet to build up a tolerance.

• It is important that the experience is kept positive for both the cat and the owner, as forcing this onto the cat can cause stress and build up reluctance or aversion to future grooming.

• Longhaired cat breeds require daily grooming. One way to keep them properly maintained is to use cat grooming accessories like grooming gloves or specialist pet grooming brushes. Some cats may prefer this gentle style of grooming and it is a good way to introduce a young cat to more regular grooming.

• Grooming a reluctant cat can be challenging, and it’s very important to start the routine early when welcoming a new cat into your home.

EDUCATIONAL TRIPS ALLOWED DURING TERM TIME? HERE’S

While the general rule is that children should attend school during term time, there are exceptions where educational trips can be justified. Jim Northwid, an ex school governor and head of operations at Frontline Collections, helps parents ensure the trip is genuinely educational and complies with legal and school requirements.

The legal side - Parents are legally obligated to ensure their children attend school during term time; unauthorised absences can result in fines or legal action. However, these laws often have provisions for approved absences, including those for educational purposes.

Defining a trip - A trip must have clear learning objectives that promote significant educational value, such as visits to historical sites, museums, scientific institutes, or cultural exchanges. It is key to demonstrate how the trip supplements the child's education in a meaningful way.

5 tips to ensure a smooth transition to secondary school

HOW…

Engaging with schools early - Transparency and early engagement with the school are crucial. Parents should present a well-structured plan outlining the trip's educational benefits, how it aligns with the curriculum and proposed measures to mitigate the impact of missed classroom time. This could include detailed itineraries, educational objectives, and post-trip assignments.

Documentation and evidence - To strengthen the case, parents should be prepared to provide documentation supporting the trip's educational nature. This could include brochures, itineraries, educational materials and letters from experts or institutions involved in the trip.

Potential pitfalls - While the educational loophole offers flexibility, it's not a free pass. Schools and authorities scrutinise such requests to ensure they're not an excuse for regular vacations. Abuse of this loophole can lead to stricter enforcement and legal repercussions.

A collaborative approach - The most successful educational trip requests are collaborative, involving dialogue between parents, students and schools. This partnership ensures that the trip genuinely contributes to the child's education while respecting the importance of regular school attendance. As your child steps into secondary school, look beyond uniforms and consider other factors for the right fit:

1. Assess the school's events calendar, offering insights into shared values and creative initiatives.

2. Explore the curriculum and language options, emphasising holistic learning and life skills development.

3. Scrutinize teachers' expertise in key subjects, acknowledging that student performance is reflected by passionate educators.

4. Embrace the significance of extracurricular activities, ensuring flexibility for extension classes and diverse opportunities, signalling a supportive environment.

5. Prioritise open communication, staying informed about school initiatives and achievements through newsletters, teacher accessibility, and alumni networks.

Balancing these factors ensures a seamless transition, fostering your child's success in secondary school. NumberWorks’nWords provides tailored tuition for academic goals. Contact us for more information and a free assessment to kick-start their educational journey.

A Final Thought…

Acting for the first time

At the start of 2023, I set myself a challenging New Year’s resolution, I wanted to act in a London play. I last acted as a child, dragged to a Peckham drama Saturday class by Mum for energy release. My remote job in corporate marketing couldn't contain my desire to be onstage. So, in my late 30s, I embraced the nervewracking thrill of acting, a world away from my marketing reports.

The Audition – After Googling “Theatre Auditions in London” there was an upcoming audition for Noel Coward’s 1940s comedy play Present Laughter at my local theatre, the Bromley Little Theatre. Reviewing the different roles, I decided on a small part, a cockney valet character called Fred. The character helped with the running of the house, owned by the famous, wealthy womanising lead, Gary.

For the audition, I watched old war-time documentaries on YouTube and imitated the home guard “cockney” soldiers that helped Londoners find safety from the air raids. The day soon came and I entered into a dark room by the main stage, with nervous looking people waiting for their turn to read out lines in front of the director. My name was called up and I put on my cockney accent to bring to life the lines. After a week’s wait, I had landed the part. See you on stage in 6 months!

Pre-rehearsals – The play was so far away, I almost forgot about it. As the start of rehearsals drew closer, I made an attempt to learn the lines. Just before the rehearsals, on a family holiday in the Canary Island of Fuerteventura, I started practicing my lines with the family and soon realised remembering 40+ lines and whistling to a loud level was an uphill challenge. My nerves began to kick in and I began questioning if I could actually do it.

During rehearsals – We practiced in a tiny room below the theatre. Initially, it was unnerving. Many of the

cast were highly experienced actors and I was at the other end of the spectrum, a rabbit staring into the head lights. Rehearsals were only 6 weeks, not long at all. The lack of preparation time caused a lot of tension in the rehearsals and nervous energy was in high supply. The director had her name associated with the play and a few of us were not line perfect, especially me. The tension intensified as we approached the opening night. The dress rehearsals were the final chance to get match fit. Our set was transformed into a 1940s themed upper class living room, which definitely helped me get into character.

The performance – As the 1940s music and lights turned on and curtains opened, now was the moment of truth. I felt very focused and present. The transformation had finally worked, going from a nervous quietly spoken valet in rehearsals to a loud deadpan confident cockney valet. Every night was a real buzz. The cast fed off the audience’s energy. After almost a two-week run, we all received great praise from friends and audience members for a top production. It really was the best thing I did in 2023 and the process gave me a renewed respect for the acting profession.

If you have the time, try a new hobby in your local community. From volunteering to even stage production and acting in your local theatre. It’s a great way to meet new people in the area and brings you out of your comfort zone. Come on down and check out some great shows at Bromley Little Theatre – I’d love to see you there!

Do you have a passion for something – a hobby or cause that you want to raise awareness of? Perhaps you just want to share your (positive or inspiring) thoughts on a subject or life in general? Send your idea to hello@ lifeinmagazines.co.uk with the subject line ‘Final Thought.’
