We’ve got the bank holidays to look forward to and you may be looking for some escapism – whether that means a day trip or weekend away or perhaps relaxing and binge-watching your favourite series, it’s always great to have something to look forward to. In this month’s issue we’ve introduced a unique addition; local illustrator Sam Richards will be contributing his wonderful illustrations to the issues – you can find his first one helping to illustrate this month’s Screen Free Week on page 20. Meanwhile, here’s an interesting fact for you: Strong communities improve health! Research from the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health suggests that living in a close-knit community can have positive effects on health outcomes, including lower rates of chronic diseases and higher life expectancy – a great reason to embrace being part of our wonderful community.

I wanted to share with you the contents of my garden waste bin!  Yuk you may think, but look closely and what do you see? Luckily, I checked inside before putting my bin out for collection as a Robin had decided to make it's nest on top of all my garden waste. I now wait patiently, not only to empty my bin, but in the hope that we have some hatchlings very soon!

5 Minutes With Captain Peter Adams VSM

Captain Adams has over 30 years flying experience, much of which has been on search and find missions. He has flown numerous aircraft, including the Spitfire Mk 9. Two decades ago he founded Air Search, a voluntary organisation that is made up of volunteers who donate their time and aircraft to the emergency services to provide eyes in the sky, aerial reconnaissance and photography. Captain Adams lives in Orpington with his wife Elizabeth, and has two grown up sons and four grandchildren.

Hello Captain Adams! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’ve always been interested in aviation, and it has taken me in three directions: the Biggin Hill International Air Fair, where I ended up Director of Charities at the shows, I trained as a pilot and I’ve done a lot of fundraising for the military.

How did you get involved in Air Search?

Some 20 years ago I was asked by a retiring RAF officer if I could help support the emergency services from the air, so I founded Air Search. We’ve helped in multiple operations, from finding people in distress to monitoring the air when we hosted the Olympics.

What aircraft do you fly?

I’ve just sold my plane and retrained in a Gyrocopter (a helicopter that requires a short  runway for take-off but can land straight down). I can now hover above someone in distress and wait for rescue to arrive.

Where did your love of aviation come from?

I used to cycle to Biggin Hill as a young man just after the

second world war and sit on the bomb shelters watching the fighters taking off and training. I then became an ATC Cadet in Shirley and when I was 25, took up flying and trained with an RAF Squadron Leader as a flying pilot in the 1960s.

Air Search is entirely voluntary; how does it work and how can people get involved?

I have a number of pilots who give their time for free and we train observers to join us on flights. They come from all walks of life, from solicitors to plumbers. We are not a charity; we are a group of people who want to give back. An average hourly flight on a four-seater aircraft is around £200 an hour, so the observers will be asked to make a contribution of £30 when they join. If someone is fit, local and healthy they can volunteer to train as an observer. We are always looking for observers and also need more pilots. Many pilots aren’t even aware that we exist. They might want a reason to fly more, and we give them something to focus on.

How many people are members of the organisation?

We have 25 pilots and observers and averaged about 100 jobs last year. We do a lot of training; an observer needs to take good aerial photographs at 80mph, as well as be trained in observation, because if you’re part of a crew the pilot will expect you to look out for other aircraft. The pilot’s job will be to fly a search pattern whilst talking to air traffic control, and the observer will take pictures which we send directly to the emergency services.

Do you have time for other interests in your busy life?

My two other interests are classic cars and fundraising. I was contacted by the RAF and asked if I’d raise money for them 20 years ago and we’ve raised over £4 million since then.

What does community mean to you?

It’s everything. Most of my adult life has been spent supporting the community. I like to think the footsteps I’ve walked in life will stay in place through the charity work we’ve done, such as helping raise funds to build hospitals.

By the middle of the 19th century the population of Bromley had exploded and changed the character of Bromley from a small market town to a bustling and busy town. In 1903 Bromley had a population over 30,000 and was awarded its Royal Charter. In 1906 a new Town Hall was built in the neo-Wren style along Tweedy and Widmore Roads. Officially opened on 27th September 1907, it contained a barrel vaulted Magistrates Court with two cells. The cells remain within the Town Hall building.

As the town grew, there was a need for a larger court house. Architecturally the Old Court House is part of a distinct group of three red brick public buildings built in 1939, consisting of the Town Hall, the Fire Station and the Old Court House, now known as Community House.

The 1991 census showed a population for the whole borough was 293,500. By 2021 it had reached 329,991. A new Magistrates Court opened at no. 1 London Road at the top of Beckenham Lane and the Old Court House was no longer fit for purpose. The Council sold it to Castle Forge who converted it into a rentable office.

As a result of the feasibility studies, architects and builders were commissioned to begin the conversion of the old Courts in 1999. A huge community fund raising effort bought the lease which included a formal fundraising dinner, public subscription, council grants and sponsoring

flagstones in the South Street Café courtyard, together with matching funding from Bromley Council, support from many local businesses and grants from the Big Lottery Fund. It meant that Community House could now open. By 2000 the council was able to grant a lease to a new charitable body to manage the building for the benefit of the community, and so Bromley Voluntary Sector Trust (BVST) and Community House Bromley was born. Opening in its new guise to the public, the building entered a new historical phase; from court house to Community House under the watchful eye of Sir Roger Sims, the first President of Bromley Voluntary Sector Trust. He was a tireless contributor and an inspiration in the development of the community building. He continued to serve as an active and committed President until July 2019. Denis Barkway, the then leader of the council, was instrumental in devising and setting up the trust. Over the years many trustees have guided the project. I then became the chair of trustees in January 2023 and was involved in the original fundraising and have continued my involvement with Community House, first as a trustee of Bromley Citizens Advice, and since 2019 as a trustee of BVST.

A whole list of community groups that use the facilities would be too long. The founding members were Bromley and Greenwich Age UK, Community Links Bromley, Citizens Advice Bromley, deafPLUS and Relate. Since then, 14 charities hold regular meetings at Community House, such as Magpie Dance Charity, CASPA – Life with autism, and Florence Nightingale Aid in Sickness Trust to name just three. In addition, they hire out rooms for conferences and virtual offices. After 24 years inside it still looks as good as new.

At the time of writing, Community House is going through a fraught time. The building has been sold by the Council. Meetings are being held with the BVST in an effort to renegotiate its lease – they have about two years remaining. It is history in the making. We wait for the next stage and I hope as a community centre, it will have a long life into the future.

MAYOR’S VOICE

As my fulfilling time as Bromley’s Mayor starts to draw to a close, I find myself fondly reflecting on all that has been achieved during my tenure.

I have had the pleasure of joining so many community events with schools, care homes, businesses and charities - and everything in between. There has been no shortage of occasions for residents to come together, be that for recent Easter holidays and or various other religion festivals that I and the Deputy Mayor have attended, or countless other festivities across the borough throughout the year.

We have been holding a whole range of events to raise funds for my chosen charities – Orpington Sea Cadets, PTSD999 and The MumMum Foundation. Through various meals, quiz nights and matches with my bowls and golf teams, we have been supporting the incredible work these charities do each day, with further events still to come!

I previously shared news from the Mayor of Bromley’s Awards, where I had the privilege of awarding ten residents for their outstanding voluntary efforts. These stars highlight what I see time and time again as I journey around the borough as Mayor – that so many residents work tirelessly to support those who need it

There’s something very happy about May. It is mid spring, although nowadays we can’t vouch for the spring weather. However, we can guarantee two extra days holiday. May Day, the first Monday, and Bank Holiday Monday, the last Monday. I have no idea why they call it May Day, as pilots facing looming air disasters call out that name, and as for Bank Holiday Monday? Aren’t the banks always on holiday, seeing that most are closed permanently? However, the upside is two extra days holiday which we love.

As a child I used to love watching the May Day Carnival. The floats went through our local high street. In the front float was the year’s pretty May Queen along with her princesses, waving at the onlookers, as they cheered her through the streets. How I longed to be one of the pretty ladies on the float.

The youngest Bromley Award recipient, 11-yearold Betsi, reminded me of the inspiring efforts from many of our younger residents that I have encountered this year. One of my ‘Stories from Bromley’ interviews was with nine-year old Mia, who shared her experiences of with Vascular EDS and impressive fundraising efforts. The incredible stories of 102-year old RAF veteran, Peter Lemon, kicked off these interviews, where we looked to shine a light on unsung local heroes.

With many more events still in the calendar, I hope to meet as many of you as possible in my remaining time as Mayor and then hope my successor has just as enjoyable a year as I have serving as your Mayor and celebrating the importance of coming together.

In those days, on the ascending part of the bus, where the conductor stood, there was a floor to ceiling pole. I stood there holding onto the pole and leaning out, so the wind blew through my hair. I was feeling very glamorous and grown-up. Then I lost my balance and the next thing I had slipped. My feet and legs were on the ground, being dragged along, as I hung on for dear life with my hands onto the pole. My father jumped up and grabbed me. Everyone was shouting. The bus came to an immediate halt. I was hoisted back onto the bus, the skin on my legs had been peeled away and underneath was full of grit and tiny stones. Everyone was telling me how stupid I was. Which of course I was. I hadn’t actually done any major damage, but my legs were a sight, and the hem of my dress was in tatters.

Needless to say, we missed the carnival queen picking. We spent the afternoon in A and E at the local hospital, having grit and dirty stones dug from my legs. Moral of the story – some things just aren’t meant to be. For more about me and my crime novels see www.lindareganonline.co.uk

Mark Browne nominated Christine Atkinson for the help she does for the community via the Rotary Club. Mark said: “Christine is always highlighting issues that Rotary Club are addressing. She had done a lot for the Ukraine effort organising events and raising money for the cause and is very passionate about what she does. She attends fairs and different functions, supporting many events and helping the youth in many ways.”

How does it feel to be nominated as a local hero?  It’s a great surprise as I’ve never thought of myself as a ‘hero’. I’m just passionate about the causes that the Rotary supports.

How you got involved in the Rotary?

When I retired 15 years ago I decided to see what Rotary was about. The first thing that jumped out was its 35-year plus project to eradicate polio, as my mother was disabled with polio when I was just four years old, which had a massive impact on the family.

You’ve done a lot of charity work via the Rotary – what were the more memorable projects?

There are many but being Polio Champion was a big one when I administered the distribution of hundreds of jars of jam, donated by TipTree to raise funds, all over the district. I also arranged for 50 Rotarians to climb the O2, which raised more funds. Every pound raised by Rotary becomes three with the support of The Bill Gates Foundation, allowing us to vaccinate infants. My proudest moment was securing Ade Adepitan as one of our Ambassadors for End Polio Now. There was also the Rotary Work Club, put together during lockdown with a number of wonderful people who came forward to help those who had lost their jobs. On Ukraine Independence Day we arranged an event of games, entertainment and dinosaurs to help the many Ukrainian children who now call Bromley home whilst waiting to be able to safely return home. My most recent project has been coordinating funding for sponsorship of a group called Ravens Chat at Bromley Football Club - a growing group for loneliness and mental health which supports Sporting Memories for Bromley residents with oncoming Alzheimer's and dementia.

Why is it important for you to get involved in helping charities and with volunteering?  I’ve had the privilege of travelling all over the world and wanted to ‘give back’ when retiring. I wanted to do something worthwhile and with a sense of purpose, so felt

Can you tell us about the annual Youth Awards?

A great area of focus for Rotary is youth and we hold many competitions such as Young Chef, Young Musician, Young Artist and Young Photographer etc, and together with Youth Awards this helps to motivate the next generation by recognising special contributions. Hopefully Rotarians of the future!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?  Well, there aren’t many of those hours but I still enjoy travelling when possible. Eating out and not having to cook is always a pleasure.

What are your plans and projects for this year?  I really hope to develop and embed Rotary’s connection with Bromley Football Community Trust as the synergy is very in sync.

What does community mean to you?

Collaboration, relationship development and caring for our fellow human beings. Be nice, be kind and be humble.

Bromley-born Kate Sweeney is 36 and lived in Columbia as a child and is fluent in Spanish. Fun Walk fundraising

St Christopher’s Hospice is celebrating the return of its popular Fun Walk fundraising event after a five-year absence. The event will see thousands of keen walkers and supporters of St Christopher’s take part in the fun on Sunday 12th May, with fancy dress costumes a popular choice for many. Some walkers proudly walk in memory of loved ones with photos of them on their t-shirts, raising money for the charity. The Fun Walk starts and finishes at Keston Common, which hosts fair-ground stalls, children’s games, live music, refreshments and a dog show. Attendees can choose their distance with a choice of 3, 5, 8 or 11-mile sponsored walks with plenty of entertainment stops along the way. Walks commence from 9am, with the last recommended set-off time advised for 11am if you are undertaking the 11-mile walk. It costs £15 to register as an adult or £5 for 3-17-year-olds. Britain set to be a riot of beautiful blooms

Foodbank egged on by Bromley Lions

Bromley Borough Foodbank was happy to take delivery of an impressive haul of Easter eggs, thanks to a generous donation from Bromley Lions Club.

The chocolate eggs were distributed to families in need across the borough in time for the Easter break. Bromley Lions is part of an international network providing service to communities through fundraising and charitable giving. Established in 1986, Bromley Lions currently has 18 members and is one of over 700 Lion clubs in the UK. Members meet monthly to decide how to raise and distribute funds. As each member pays an annual subscription, it means that 100% of money raised by Bromley Lions is spent on the community. A total of £100 was allocated to the foodbank which bought 64 Easter eggs.

Bromley Borough Foodbank is part of the national Trussell Trust network. It has centres across the borough, with at least one open every weekday. In 2023, it provided 14,221 food parcels to 8,634 adults and 5,587 children.

INSIGHTS FROM THE SUPER

As spring arrives and the rain (hopefully) starts to finally subside, we are now planning phase 2 of our work to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour in the borough, with a follow up conference in June to look at real action and deliverables.

The first conference worked to understand and separate the issues into clear themes. We can then come up with bespoke plans to tackle this using problem-solving methodology as a whole partnership that encompasses police, fire brigade, local authority, health, police ward panels, the community and many others.

In May we will be holding our second Retail Crime Working Group, to try and make retail spaces safer for residents and retail workers, with a key focus on tackling shoplifting, stolen goods markets and assaults on staff. We have made some great progress, including a partnership with the Drug and Alcohol Service to target our most prolific offenders

with Criminal Behaviour Orders. These look to both exclude offenders from the areas they offend by law, and require them to seek help if they have substance misuse issues to try and address the root causes of offending. The group has also grown with more retailers represented to give their views, plus an improved commitment from us to share relevant data to help us combat this problem together.

Road safety continues to be a community priority, with our new speed gun now set to be deployed, with around 25 and growing cohort of officers who can issue fines to speeding drivers. We now have three handheld speed guns and will be doing operations most days somewhere in the borough. We considered this carefully, but are acting in clear response to community concerns to create a deterrent to this which creates clear danger on our roads. Please drive safely!

New research reveals that the most expensive language to master is Korean whilst Romanian is found to be the cheapest. The average cost of becoming fluent in a language is £32,870 and should take 44 weeks. The online education discovery platform, Internet of Learning, analysed 66 languages, factoring in the time needed to master one, plus the expenses of online tutors to calculate the overall cost of becoming fluent.

The cost for a beginner to achieve fluency in Korean was estimated at £122,200. Dedicating a minimum of 2,200 hours, over 88 weeks, in 50-minute sessions at an average cost of £42.50.

Q: What skills can my child develop from taking part in a theatre school?

Q: What are the most common mistakes people make when they go about decorating a room and how can they avoid them?

People often use the wrong products for what they’re trying to do only realising when they start and then it’s too late. It’s worth properly researching exactly what you need in advance and not trying to cut corners. Decorating a room is actually more involved than most people think and preparation is always key. Have all the equipment you need ready, including for prepping, priming, cleaning and making good, as well as protecting areas you aren’t covering. Take time to ensure you are working with a good clean base, that might mean stripping back and repairing before you can begin. Painting ceilings is always much harder than you’d imagine and most people don’t own the right equipment for reaching them in order to create a perfect finish. I’d say it would be best to call in an expert like myself for the trickier jobs, I spend a lot of time correcting people’s mistakes!

CAT GROOMING TIPS (FOR A SHINY COAT & CONTENTED CAT)

Cats love being brushed and groomed, and it is important for cat owners to make it part of their routine as it helps to bond with them and keep your cat contented, says pet insurer petGuard. The company’s marketing manager, James Whitten, said: “Regular grooming contributes towards the preventative care of the cats by stopping them swallowing dead hair while they self-groom and reducing the likelihood of them coughing up any nasty furballs. Regular grooming also allows the owner to spot anything unusual, which might be worth being checked by a vet.”

Watch out for bloat!

This is our late dobermann Beau. After surviving surgery for GDV (bloat) in 2008 we set up a bloat awareness campaign. We were helped enormously by numerous vets, The Royal Kennel Club and the dog press. Nine years after Beau's passing his legacy lives on.

If you experience a combination of the following:

• Your dog retches from the throat but nothing is produced, other than a small amount of frothy mucus

• Your dog tries to defaecate unsuccessfully

• Your dog adopts the 'Sphinx' position

• Your dog's tummy goes hard and / or swells up like a balloon and is as taut as drumskin

• Your dog is trying to bite, or worry, the abdomen

• Your dog is very unsettled

Contact your vet immediately. Bloat is a true emergency - be prepared to drive to the surgery straightaway. The chance of survival decreases alarmingly if you delay getting the dog to the surgery more than 60-90 minutes after the first signs – it could save your dog's life.

Tips for grooming

• It might take a while for a cat to get used to being groomed, so until then keep sessions short and sweet to build up a tolerance.

• It is important that the experience is kept positive for both the cat and the owner, as forcing this onto the cat can cause stress and build up reluctance or aversion to future grooming.

• Longhaired cat breeds require daily grooming. One way to keep them properly maintained is to use cat grooming accessories like grooming gloves or specialist pet grooming brushes. Some cats may prefer this gentle style of grooming and it is a good way to introduce a young cat to more regular grooming.

• Grooming a reluctant cat can be challenging, and it’s very important to start the routine early when welcoming a new cat into your home.

THE GRUDGE

My cat Bessie didn’t even want to be in the same room as me when I returned after an unexpected six weeks in hospital. She spewed out angry and bitter recriminations at great length. It wasn’t necessary to speak ‘cat’ in order to get the gist – she had expected me to be reassuringly in the house at her beck and call, as I always had been since her arrival a few years earlier when she had first approached me and my resident cat hissing, spitting and refusing any attempt at stroking or human interaction. She had come from a caring home - but where she had been gradually overwhelmed by the numerous large dogs. She had developed a very realistic dog growl but it wasn’t enough and it had seemed kinder to move her to a new home.

On arrival at my home, she had been met by Boo my much older cat, who had long been afflicted by a rare illness which necessitated him having drops inserted four times a day in both eyes. His amazing fosterer had taught him the necessity of these drops, and he would arrive for them within 30 mins of the exact time each day. He had been taught to lie on her lap on his back, with his eyes open, without protest. He was so good about this - but it did need a great deal of my time and attention – and I wasn’t sure how he would feel about sharing me with another cat. Cats only use their voice to connect with people – with other cats it is body language alone – so now he stood quite still gazing amiably at the spitting fury that had entered his home. He immediately knew she was scared and not aggressive – and conveyed – as cats can do – that he wouldn’t be harming her. She accepted his friendship without question.

Bessie soon became his shadow – wherever he went she followed, and became much more cat like in behaviour. Together they climbed trees, visited the neighbours and

told visiting foxes to shift themselves off ‘their’ property. Except that for some time she could only eat her meals on an upstairs window ledge [she had learnt that dogs cannot jump onto narrow ledges to pinch her food]. However, this only lasted about a week before she joined him eating normally off her dish placed on the kitchen floor.

Many happy years later the elderly Boo became incontinent and then suddenly lost the use of his back legs - so very regretfully I had to call the vet out to end his misery. I miss him dreadfully. Bessie seemed to understand that he had died and wandered about looking lonely and lost without him. Then very soon afterwards I found myself in hospital.

When I ‘disappeared’, she was looked after by my son – b ut was most cross with me when I returned six weeks later. Where had I been all this time? Bessie was lucky that she could remain in her own home – as my son was visiting at the time and could stay on to feed her – but he was at work during the day. Although I had been going out daily before my hospital stay, I was home for most of each day. The double loss was obviously most upsetting for her and, in her opinion, this was all MY fault.

In time we restored our friendship of course – but now she never goes outside at all. However, she no longer seems to worry when I leave the house.

Life has returned to as near normal as it gets here, and she now eats well – as long as I hold out her dish to her and remain holding it while she eats. All things considered it seems a small price to pay for peace.

A Final Thought…

Acting for the first time

At the start of 2023, I set myself a challenging New Year’s resolution, I wanted to act in a London play. I last acted as a child, dragged to a Peckham drama Saturday class by Mum for energy release. My remote job in corporate marketing couldn't contain my desire to be onstage. So, in my late 30s, I embraced the nervewracking thrill of acting, a world away from my marketing reports.

The Audition – After Googling “Theatre Auditions in London” there was an upcoming audition for Noel Coward’s 1940s comedy play Present Laughter at my local theatre, the Bromley Little Theatre. Reviewing the different roles, I decided on a small part, a cockney valet character called Fred. The character helped with the running of the house, owned by the famous, wealthy womanising lead, Gary.

For the audition, I watched old war-time documentaries on YouTube and imitated the home guard “cockney” soldiers that helped Londoners find safety from the air raids. The day soon came and I entered into a dark room by the main stage, with nervous looking people waiting for their turn to read out lines in front of the director. My name was called up and I put on my cockney accent to bring to life the lines. After a week’s wait, I had landed the part. See you on stage in 6 months!

Pre-rehearsals – The play was so far away, I almost forgot about it. As the start of rehearsals drew closer, I made an attempt to learn the lines. Just before the rehearsals, on a family holiday in the Canary Island of Fuerteventura, I started practicing my lines with the family and soon realised remembering 40+ lines and whistling to a loud level was an uphill challenge. My nerves began to kick in and I began questioning if I could actually do it.

During rehearsals – We practiced in a tiny room below the theatre. Initially, it was unnerving. Many of the

cast were highly experienced actors and I was at the other end of the spectrum, a rabbit staring into the head lights. Rehearsals were only 6 weeks, not long at all. The lack of preparation time caused a lot of tension in the rehearsals and nervous energy was in high supply. The director had her name associated with the play and a few of us were not line perfect, especially me. The tension intensified as we approached the opening night. The dress rehearsals were the final chance to get match fit. Our set was transformed into a 1940s themed upper class living room, which definitely helped me get into character.

The performance – As the 1940s music and lights turned on and curtains opened, now was the moment of truth. I felt very focused and present. The transformation had finally worked, going from a nervous quietly spoken valet in rehearsals to a loud deadpan confident cockney valet. Every night was a real buzz. The cast fed off the audience’s energy. After almost a two-week run, we all received great praise from friends and audience members for a top production. It really was the best thing I did in 2023 and the process gave me a renewed respect for the acting profession.
