Crompton’s Quarters

I felt I had to email you after reading the article about Richmal Crompton. It mentions that she lived at 9 Cherry Orchard Road, Bromley Common and the interesting thing is that I lived in that house from the age of 9. The house was owned by a builder who turned it into two flats – 9 and 9A. My father worked for that builder and we rented the ground floor flat which was 9A. I lived there until I got married to my first and only wife. We have just celebrated our 54th wedding anniversary. We didn't know that Richmal Crompton had lived in the house, I only found out later in life. I do believe that the house she had built in Oakley Road has a blue plaque on it. I also remember reading the Just William books as a lad.

A plea for understanding (in an electronic age)

I am in my mid-eighties having spent 60+ of those years as a Bromley resident, but am now beginning to feel as if I came from another planet. I am one of the many non-electronic minded ‘oldies’ and therefore an outsider. I do not have a computer or even a mobile phone, meaning I am not even able to park my car in Bromley as the charge also has to be paid electronically. If anyone wishes to contact me it has to be by landline phone or letter, for which I am usually charged a fee. I console myself knowing that I cannot be scammed (unless face to face). However, what I find most annoying is when speaking to utility companies, the NHS or any business transaction – having firstly explained my electronic inadequacies, they usually finish the conversation by saying “we will send you an e-mail.” Don’t they listen? The Enigmatic Cockpit on Chislehurst Common: More Than Meets the Eye

In the heart of Chislehurst, right opposite the west gate of St Nicholas church, lies a piece of history that often gets overlooked – the intriguing cockpit on Chislehurst Common. Some might describe it as unique, while Webb’s History of Chislehurst takes a more modest approach, calling it "one of the few perfect examples of a cockpit which still exist."

Contrary to popular belief, this circular structure, situated within the triangle of common land known as the Village Green, is not a remnant of a bomb crater. The misconception might stem from an incident during the last air-raid of World War I on Whit Sunday 1918 when a bomb fell nearby, causing no damage to the cockpit.

Darrell Spurgeon and Roy Hopper, in their book 'Discover Chislehurst,' propose an interesting theory about the origins of this depression. They speculate that it might have started as a medieval gravel pit, later allowed to grass over for the purpose of hosting cockfights.

Cock-fighting, a once-popular but outlawed activity, met its demise in 1834. Surprisingly, the ban wasn't due to concerns about animal cruelty but rather the troublesome behaviour it incited among the spectators. Following the ban, the cockpit found itself a new purpose – hosting singlestick fighting until 1862. The Vestry, Chislehurst's equivalent of local government, put a stop to it, citing the cockpit as a gathering place for the "commonest and lowest class of persons."

Misbehaviour and rowdiness persisted on Chislehurst Common, especially during the funfairs held on the Village Green on bank holidays. The early Conservators, now Trustees, inherited these concerns, leading them to monitor activities closely.

Measuring 40 meters in diameter and 1.5 meters deep with sloping sides, the cockpit's circular structure is a fascinating historical relic. At its centre, there's a slightly raised circle spanning 32 meters in diameter. In the 20th century, this seemingly historical site became the venue for significant public events, like the homecoming service for the returning troops in 1919, marked by an engraved stone donated by former Board member Mr A. Gunn.

Now, weaving through the tapestry of Chislehurst's history, we uncover another significant thread just beyond the borders of Chislehurst Common. A key figure in this tale is William Willett, a proud resident of Chislehurst. During the tumultuous days of World War I, Willett introduced the concept of daylight saving time in 1916, a visionary move aimed at optimizing daylight usage and conserving energy.

Willett's innovative idea not only transformed our relationship with time but also cast a lasting influence on our daily lives. By adjusting the clocks to make better use of daylight, people found themselves with extended evenings, fostering increased productivity and energy efficiency. A memorial stands to commemorate his invention in Chislehurst Woods.

As we reflect on the rich history of the cockpit on Chislehurst Common, it intertwines with the forwardthinking spirit of William Willett. His dedication to harnessing the benefits of daylight aligns seamlessly with the multifaceted stories woven into the fabric of Chislehurst. So, as you traverse the Village Green, take a moment not only to appreciate the unique charm of the cockpit but also to acknowledge the local innovator whose legacy shaped the very rhythm of our days.

Chris Conlan

Local resident, Chris Conlan, is Pearly King of Bromley, an iconic figure in London's cultural tapestry with roots tracing back to the 19th century. Pearly Kings and Queens have been central to charitable efforts, raising funds for various causes in their communities. We caught up with Chris to find out more about his interesting and important role…

Can you give a brief overview of the history of Pearly Kings and Queens?

The very first Pearly King was a man named Henry Croft. After his father died and mother went into the workhouse, he became an orphan who later worked as a road sweep in Somers Town, North London. He saw the community and support held amongst the local market sellers and decided that was something to aim for. He made his first Pearly suit around 1870 and began raising money for charitable causes including the orphanage in which he was raised. Henry become so well-known, and the need was so great that he asked friends to help and these friends became the Pearly Kings and Queens of their respective towns or boroughs.

What roles and responsibilities do you have?

A common misconception is that Pearly Kings and Queens are entertainers, but this is not the case. We are charitable workers and wear our Pearly suits to attract attention in order to raise as much money as possible for charitable causes. We are ambassadors for London and do not represent any religious, cultural or political viewpoint; we are solely in place to raise money for worthy causes and share the history of our great city.

What is a typical day in the life of a ‘Pearly King/ Queen?’

There really is no typical day. We come from all different parts of London and walks of life and there is a large age range amongst us. We all work as Pearlies on a voluntary basis. In fact, it costs us to be a Pearly King or Queen as we make our own suits and pay for our own travel; we do it for the love of the role and to raise money for needy causes.

Are there other Pearly Kings and Queens? Do you meet up?

Yes and yes! We come from all over London and regularly

communicate with each other. We meet up in an official capacity also; whether that be raising money for charity or taking on jobs all over the Southeast, where we appear at events and accept donations for our charitable causes. These include school visits, fetes, care home visits, women’s institutes and anywhere we are requested to appear and a donation to charity is given. Outside of our work, many of us are friends for life and we meet up in our ‘civvies’ socially whenever we can.

What did you wish you knew before you became a Pearly King?

The sheer amount of sewing involved! My Pearly suit contains thousands of buttons which were all sewed on by hand and they frequently fall off. The vast amount of buttons makes the suit extremely heavy and bulky, especially on hot days. Still, I would not change becoming a Pearly for the world.

What has been your highlight so far?

I have had some amazing opportunities, but my highlight has to be my coronation which took place on the same day as King Charles III. Bromley has welcomed me with open arms and recognised me as their official Pearly King, which is a privilege not always afforded to Pearlies. I am extremely proud to wear the title ‘Pearly King of Bromley’ on my suit when representing the town across the borough, London and beyond. Accompanying the Bromley Mayor on several events has been an unexpected privilege and delight and I look forward to all the opportunities the future may bring.

What does community mean to you?

It’s about people coming together for a common good.

Sing like you’re winning!

One Saturday in April, Viva Acappella, a competing acappella chorus based in Bickley, took to the stage at the Barbershop of Iberia Association Convention (BiBA) and won Gold, returning home as International Champions!

Under the direction of Nicky Salt, a professional Vocal and Performance Coach, the group competed against 17 other choruses from the UK, Sweden and Portugal to a packed auditorium, watched on by family and friends via a live webcast back home.

The group is already planning its next competition, returning to compete in at Sweet Adelines International in May 2025, and is open to welcoming new members who are willing and able to commit to joining a competitive chorus.

Elm revival

The Kent & East Sussex Railway (K&ESR) is helping to reintroduce an environmentally important native tree to the Weald - the Elm - which virtually disappeared from the English landscape in the 1970s, following an outbreak of Dutch Elm Disease (DED).

The railway's entirely volunteer Forestry & Conservation group, which is responsible for the management of all trees and vegetation along the 10.5-mile line, recently planted ten DED-resistant species of standard Elm tree at the start of its 2024 tree planting programme.

Geraldine Ann Ford is a retired 72-year old with a zest for life. She was born in Catford and growing up with five siblings meant there was never dull moment. Geraldine has lived in many different places including three different islands abroad. She came back to Greater London five years ago to be near to her son and daughter and her grandchildren. Her new book, which was published in January this year, is called Humour is Good for Your Health.

Geraldine said: “Writing is my first love and I’ve written and self-published six books. I enjoy the challenge of writing books whether non-fiction, fiction or poetry. Putting a book together and seeing the end result is extremely satisfying. My book would suit most readers, especially those who don’t have a lot of time; they can open it to any page and have a chuckle. People enjoy listening to me when I perform my humorous poems and monologues, so I thought I’d put them in a book. I am currently writing a book called Memories of a London Girl which covers the 1950s and 60s.

Madlani Cancer Support

A new local charity who supports anyone living with any type of cancer, and their loved ones has launched. The group operates from Orpington Village Hall (311 High Street, Orpington) every Thursday from 10am – 4pm. Pop in and see them to hear about their plans. The next coffee morning takes place on Thursday 27th June from 10.30-12.30pm where attendees can get to know others who have been touched by cancer.

In Mary’s memory…

The Primrose Centre held a memorial Cream Tea event recently in memory of its founding CEO, Mary Spinks, who sadly passed away last year. One year on, the wonderful legacy she left is being carried on by the most fantastic team of volunteers.  The charity welcomed over 55 visitors and volunteers to its Cream Tea event, where it unveiled its new water feature in the garden – a tribute to Mary who loved the gardens. Charity Ambassador, Jonny Meah, a Heart Radio presenter, took time out of his busy schedule to visit on the day and chat to some of the visitors. Many of them remembered his mum, who was a visitor at Primrose until last year. Meanwhile, M&S Bromley generously donated the scones and with a raffle on the day too, the charity raised over £425 for treatments for its visitors.

The Primrose Centre offers support to women with a breast cancer diagnosis, at whatever stage of their treatment. They offer a range of support and holistic treatments from their centre in Locksbottom. No referral is needed, just pop in and register with us. They are open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am until 4pm and coffee mornings are the second Thursday of the month from 11am. Bromley Cup Final: The Highway v Keston Primary School (0-2)

The Highway Primary School boys football team in Orpington was in the Bromley Cup Final recently. Although they didn’t win, The Highway has never reached so far in the league before, so it was deemed a huge success that they reached the final.

There were some valiant runs by The Highway midfielders and forwards to drive the ball up the pitch but most attempts to get near the opposition’s goal were thwarted.

Following a strategic half-time talk by teacher and manager Mr. Copping, The Highway increased the pressure and had more possession than in the first half. However, Keston were relentless in their attack and scored two goals in quick succession. The Highway retaliated and they gave it their all to score but strong goalkeeping by Keston denied them this chance.

Keston may have won the cup but for the first time ever The Highway came second in their league – a feat that they should all be proud of!

From blue to green

Mytime Active has removed all single-use plastic overshoes from its swimming pools and leisure centres as part of ongoing sustainability efforts. Across the trust’s six swimming pools in the Borough of Bromley, the decision to no longer use single-use plastic overshoes will prevent 36,000 pairs from going into landfill per month - 432,000 a year. The trust, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is asking its community to instead bring their own flip flops or other suitable footwear to use around its swimming pools.

The company’s CEO, Jason Stanton, said: “There is growing awareness of the issue of plastic and other waste, and we are taking really positive steps towards lessening our impact on the environment. We have clear sustainability goals and work hard to communicate these to everyone in the company and beyond, helping employees and members to understand how they can contribute to our environmental and sustainability targets.”

Other initiatives underway include replacing all existing lighting with energy-saving LED fittings, while Mytime Active is also taking steps to improve biodiversity and promote ecological sustainability across its golf courses.

Bromley FC makes history!

Bromley Football Club is officially members of the English Football League for the first time in its 132-year history. The promotion to Sky Bet League Two came following the club’s win against Solihull Moors in the National League Promotion Final recently. THE FUTURE OF CHURCHILL THEATRE…?

The council reports that it is continuing with its plans to ensure that a thriving, state of the art theatre remains anchored at the very heart of Bromley Town Centre deep into the 21st Century.

A council spokesman said: “Whilst discussions remain ongoing with the theatre’s current operators Trafalgar Group, the council is also going out to market to invite additional expressions of interest, to secure the future of the theatre, in line with its statutory duty to obtain best value for council tax payers’ money, prior to reaching a final decision.”

This follows confirmation last year that the theatre, which was constructed in the 1970s and is now rapidly approaching the end of its life, needs to be replaced, providing the council with an opportunity to secure a new and upgraded theatre, as well as enabling the relocation of Bromley’s Central Library to a more prominent location on street at the vacant Top Shop premises slightly nearer to Market Square.

Literary delights read & reviewed by Bromley borough residents

FICTION

Title: Force of Hate

Author: Graham Bartlett

This is a fast-paced book which is exceptionally well written and covers many aspects of life. The story begins with a firebomb at a traveller site which kills women and children and Chief superintendent Jo Howe is assigned to the case. Covering topics such as corruption, sex trafficking and hate crime to name a few, the story provides an in-depth view of the working of many organisations – from the police to the council. Force of Hate helps raise awareness of a range of issues, offering an insight into the suffering of people affected including both the physical and mental ramifications. The book offers food for thought across a range of topics by emphasising the level of corruption within many organisations, with an underlying message of taking accountability.  A compelling read and a real eye-opener.

I would give it a 5-star rating.

Can you believe we’re halfway through the year? I can’t, and nor can the flowers in my garden, which have already waved their hellos long before their official entrance.

‘Climate Change,’ someone told me. ‘Bad timing,’ I replied. I mean if you were Peter Kay or Katherine Ryan, you wouldn’t just throw a joke, uninvited, you’d wait for your official cue. It’s called good timing.

Anyway, I still have some pretty flowers in my garden so I mustn’t moan. But I need to tell you something I can moan about. I have recently taken to baking. I bought a Mary Berry book a while back. It went on the shelf and stayed there. However, my hubby had been a little poorly which landed him in hospital for a few nights. (A big thank you here to all the nurses at the Princess Royal University Hospital, who do a marvellous job and get such little thanks for it).

My House Plant Changed My Life confirmed my thoughts that plants help contribute to a calmer and more relaxed environment, detailing everything from how plants can help our mental wellbeing through to their air purifying qualities. Other unexpected nuggets of advice include how to engage kids with house plants, mood enhancing colours and how to cultivate them. My favourite chapter was ‘Houseplant Heroes’. There are just some plants that I can’t seem to keep alive no matter how much I look after them. This section detailed each of the plants into beautifully illustrated pages with top tips including how the plant would make you smile and calm you down, as well as how they can be rescued and practical tips such as positioning, potting, care and growth rate. The design and illustration of the book prevented it from feeling monotonous and lends itself to being a great gift too.

to purchase ingredients. Then I heard hubby was to be discharged the next day, so I set to work. Mary Berry made it very straightforward and with my favourite Phil Collins DVD for background music, I baked and iced away. I was thrilled, my cake looked perfect.

Down came the Mary Berry Baking Bible

Hubby was, understandably, feeling very sorry for himself. I was visiting as often as they would let me, always weighed down with fruit and chocolate. I even brought my dancing teddy in to cheer him. He showed little interest. When I asked him what he was missing most, (fully expecting him to say being with me), he said carrot cake. I love it when you buy me carrot cake.

So down came the Mary Berry Baking Bible, and off I went

The next morning, off I went and picked up hubby. We arrived back at the house. I made him cover his eyes while I hurried in and picked up the cake which was being presented on a pretty doily and sitting on a cake stand. At the same time as I walked toward the door carrying the cake, our dog caught sight and smell of hubby, and unable to contain her excitement, dashed for the door just as I was about to walk through it. Doggie’s dash included running swiftly in front of my legs. Yes, you’ve guessed it. I tripped, the cake went flying, landing in bits on our gravel driveway. Hubby, hearing the commotion, took his hands from covering his eyes and stood staring in devastation.

INSIGHTS FROM THE SUPER

As I write this article, I am preparing to attend a key workshop on how we deliver community safety, which in Bromley is through the Safer Bromley Partnership. This has agencies from all across the public and voluntary sector working together to make Bromley safer for everyone who lives and works here.

The new Safer Bromley Partnership Strategy has now launched following extensive work and consultation to really add focus to what we are trying to achieve. We are doing this by looking at the “Three Ps” – People, Places and Prevention.

People – We will seek to protect victims of crime and support the vulnerable to prevent them becoming victims of crime. We will also work to divert those at risk of falling into criminality and come up with robust plans to deal with those engaged in criminality.

Places – We will use problem solving methodology to create safe spaces and inspire communities to work with us through Community Impact Days to improve our public spaces.

Prevention – We will make preventing crime our fundamental focus and ensure everything we do seeks to stop crime and anti-social behaviour happening in the first place.

Now we have the strategy in place, the next stage is delivery, making sure we give these words meaning and real measurable outcomes. This now means that in the year I have been in my post we have fundamentally reworked our community safety strategy, and an ever-strengthening partnership is looking to create real tangible change in our communities. I will continue to update you all as we move forward.

This month I would like to highlight our preparation and preventive work towards fires in open areas and extreme weather incidents. In England on average 26,500 fires are started on grass, heathland and moorland every year. That’s an average of 73 fires a day.

Our new custom all-wheel drive (AWD) has been delivered to Biggin Hill Fire Station, where this latest addition to the Brigade’s fleet will be stationed. It’s an upgrade to our previous off-road vehicle and offers improved operational capability to help us

serve our communities. The new addition will provide us with resilience in an area of the capital which has rural and urban areas to serve. This is particularly important during inclement or even extreme weather conditions, such as flooding, snow, mud or ice, all of which the vehicle can navigate. In hot weather the vehicle will support our crews at grass fires and can also be called on to support London Biggin Hill Airport fire crews if needed.

In addition to being fitted with familiar firefighting equipment such as ladders and breathing apparatus and being able to pump water, it comes kitted out with specialist gear such as a winch for vehicle self-recovery when off road. The new AWD will have a positive impact on what we’re able to do and how we’re continuing to serve the local community.

Use smart plugs for lights

Not everyone has sophisticated lights that dim or are on a timer in their homes, but there is no need to run up a huge electricity bill or break the bank by leaving them on all day. Be mindful of social media

It is very easy to forget that it is not always just your friends who can view your profiles on certain social media platforms. New Gatwick taxiway helps reduce delays

London Gatwick has completed a new infrastructure project to help reduce delays and go-arounds, as well as supporting the airport’s sustainability targets.  The Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET) enables arriving aircraft to leave the main runway at a more optimal location after landing. By achieving a more efficient exit, the airport’s runway will perform more consistently as they are less likely to impact other aircraft.

According to the survey, the biggest concerns are data loss due to security breaches, who has access to the data and general apprehensions regarding the handling and storage of personal information.

Despite Apple having the most monthly complaints, it ranked third in terms of customer loyalty, a recent study has revealed. Alphabet (Google) ranked highest in terms of positive reviews, with around 335,000 complaint-related searches a month which pales in comparison to Apple which receives a whopping 1.2 million.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WORLD OCEAN DAY

World Ocean Day, celebrated this year on 8th June, serves as a poignant reminder of the critical role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. This global event, endorsed by the United Nations, aims to raise awareness and inspire action for the conservation and protection of our oceans.

According to the World Ocean Day website, oceans generate at least 50% of the planet's oxygen and absorb 30% of carbon dioxide emissions, mitigating the impact of climate change. However, there are a plethora of threats to our oceans including pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction; more than 8 million tons of plastic waste enter the oceans each year, posing a severe threat to marine life and ecosystems.

1. Plug in Instead of letting the hot tap run until warm, pop in the plug, allowing the cool water to build the base of your bath before it runs hot.

2. Stop those leaks A tap dripping for a week can fill a bath. And leaky loos waste around 400 litres of clean water a day! So get your leaky taps and loos fixed.

3. Turn off the taps  Shorter showers are common advice, but turning the taps down whilst you lather up can also save you 680 litres in wasted water per month. Turning off the tap when brushing your teeth saves a staggering 12 litres of water.

4. Be smart with your dishwashing A small amount of washing up is best done in the sink. But if you regularly use your dishwasher, it's essential you pack it correctly using all the space available. Short cycles or eco settings can also cut time as well as water.

5. Don’t overfill the kettle Don’t overfill the kettle – just put in what you need as this will save both water and energy.

THE FACE IN THE WINDOW

Gemma stopped to gaze in the window of a small art gallery. A painting of a young woman caught her eye as the sitter could be her double. Intrigued, she stepped inside the showroom.

‘Hello Sophie,’ said the proprietor. ‘Come to see how good you look as my centrepiece?’

‘I’m – I’m not Sophie but because of that lady’s likeness I came in to enquire about it.’

‘Sorry madam. I did think you were Sophie the wife of the artist, Ben Fairweather. Do you know his work?’

‘No I’m afraid not but that portrait is of interest. I wonder if you could tell me something about the artist. Ben Fairweather I think you said?’

‘Yes, you can look him up online and here is his card if you want to get in touch.’

‘Thank you.’

‘Your resemblance to Sophie is most uncanny. A lost relative perhaps?’

‘I don’t really know but I’d like to find out, thanks for your help.’

On the bus journey home Gemma decided to ask her parents about the likelihood of there being a branch of their families which they hadn’t mentioned.

‘What do you think mum? Are there any family members that girl could be?’

Her mother was staring at the image on the laptop screen and didn’t answer immediately.

‘Mum, are there?’

‘No of course not. They say everyone has a double, that’ll be it. What’s the name for that Mark?’

‘It’s a doppelganger.’

‘There you are Gemma, she’s your doppelganger and like you she is a beautiful girl.’

While accepting her mother’s viewpoint she, for some reason wanted to learn more about Sophie Fairweather. Although not of a fanciful nature, she felt drawn to the girl she resembled and was determined to contact her.

She was woken during the night by an unfamiliar noise, which after a few moments she recognized as her mum crying. What was wrong she wondered? When she heard her dad’s calm voice comforting her mum, she settled back down. She knew that whatever was the matter her parents would tell her, if it was her concern.

‘Morning mum, morning dad.’

‘Morning love. Gemma we have something to tell you.’

‘Neither of you are ill, are you?’

‘No love we’re not ill.’

‘What then?’

As her parent’s story unfolded she experienced a battery of emotions especially when she was told she had a twin sister.

They, young with no spare resources, estranged from their families, found themselves having to make a momentous decision. Gina had been born with a heart defect which meant she would need specialized treatment, long periods of hospitalization and hours of special care. With their difficult financial situation, they agreed to have their baby adopted believing it would be for the best.

‘Why are you telling me this now?’

‘It’s because we think that the girl in the painting could be our Gina.’

‘What makes you think that?’

‘Well love, a couple of years ago we had a letter from the adoption agency, enclosing a letter from a Sophie Fairweather. Your dad and I thought it best to ignore it.’

‘Why?’

‘We didn’t want to upset you and it seemed it was better for things to be left as they were.’

After a long walk to think about what she had been told, Gemma had come to a decision.

‘Mum, dad, did you keep that letter?’

‘Yes, why?’

‘You know I’ve always wanted a sister, so do you think you should get in touch now? That way we could find out whether the girl Sophie is indeed Gina.’

‘Are you sure that’s what you want love?’

Gemma hugged her parents. ‘Oh yes if you do too.’

Eyes filled with tears they nodded in agreement.

‘That’s wonderful, let’s find out what the future holds for us all. Now go and get that letter so we can send a reply off today.’

A Final Thought…

Most of us are lost beneath the night sky. We gaze up on clear evenings to spy a few stars and perhaps the moon, and likely think little of them… they are far away, unchanging, of no consequence to modern life; merely dim specks in a sky too easily obscured by clouds and urban glow. We have been taught what stars and planets are, but since we’re not astronomers or celestial navigators, there’s no reason to dwell on any of it.

Our vision is firmly focused below the horizon—at this world—rather than above it, towards the cosmos. ‘Let scientists ponder and solve the universe’s mysteries…’ and yet, when we truly see the night sky in all its glory, on a trip to the countryside, on a mountain top or some tropical island, where thousands of stars fill the vault of heaven, who is immune to their grandeur? Some intangible force tugs at our hearts and prompts us to question what’s out there and what it really means… Are we alone?

Half a century ago, when astronauts had just walked on the moon and I was a star-struck youngster, my parents bought me a small telescope to point skyward. My knowledge of astronomy amounted to little more than an appreciation for "Star Trek", but the lure of the universe and what mysteries the night sky harboured, soon sparked what has become a life-long love affair with the cosmos.

It’s a wonderful feeling to look into the night sky and say “hello” to the stars and planets as old friends. They might be obscured by clouds or city lights, but by glimpsing them when the sky is clear, they can change our perspective, to rise above the worldly, everyday issues that so often burden our minds.

Did you know that the discoverer of Pluto in 1930, Clyde W. Tombaugh, wasn't a professional astronomer, but rather, a young farmhand from Kansas who came to work for a major American observatory as a night assistant? He didn't have a university degree in astrophysics, or any other science, but merely possessed an unquenchable passion for searching the night sky.

Amateur stargazers are very often the ones who spot new comets, asteroids and exploding stars, with their hobbyist equipment.

So, why not explore the universe with binoculars, a small telescope or just your inquisitive eyes? Thanks to the availability of reasonably priced robotic telescopes and interactive star chart apps for smartphones, it’s never been easier to learn about what’s ‘up there’. And there are many online resources (including astronomy clubs) to help ease you along the journey of celestial discovery.

For your next holiday, consider a trip to a place where the night sky is dark enough to show the Milky Way (our own galaxy) in all its grandeur. There are an increasing number of holiday destinations that cater to stargazers who wish to explore what the universe has to offer. If you wish to stick closer to home, think about a visit to the more remote parts of Britain, which have fewer towns or cities nearby. Six UK National Parks – Exmoor, Brecon Beacons, Moore's Reserve in the South Downs, Snowdonia, North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales have been awarded International Dark Sky Reserve status. Northumberland, with England's most pristine dark skies, is an International Dark Sky Park (Gold Tier).

Who knows, perhaps you’ll even discover a new comet or star one day? But, no matter what, by standing under the glorious dome of night, whether you focus on our neighbour, the moon, just a quarter of a million miles away, or a giant galaxy at a staggering one quarter of a billion light-years distance (one light-year equals nearly 5.9 billion miles!), your horizons will be richly expanded.

So, let your imagination explore the wonders of the cosmos, and by all means, keep looking up!
