Thoughts

I thought about the world today, and what it means to me

Why are we here, what should we do, what are we meant to be?

I didn’t find the answer, but then I didn’t think I would And I wonder if my thinking really did me any good.

Why can’t we all just live in peace, why do we go to war?

Why, when we have the things we need do we always crave for more?

Well I didn’t find the answer, but then I didn’t think I would And I wonder if my thinking really did me any good.

Whoever created joy and love, created suffering too Hunger, illness, torture, pain, can these be for me and you?

Well I didn’t find the answer, I didn’t think I would And I wonder if my thinking really did me any good.

Just look at little children with their innocence of mind

We’re born with simple needs and wants, our way in life to find. I guess that is the answer, to think just like a child, To try and be just happy, till our future’s reconciled.

Thank you for another excellent fun and informative magazine (March). I noticed the useful 'Workplace terminology' at the bottom of page 29. Perhaps, next month, you could explain the phrase (American?) that is much beloved by our PM - double down. I haven't a clue what it means. Thank you.

Sylvie C

Thanks Sylvie – after a little research (and according to Dictionary. com) to ‘double down’ means to ‘strengthen one's commitment to a particular strategy or course of action, typically one that is potentially risky.’ We hope that answers your question.

My daughter Alyssa Kyria takes her one woman show 'The Funny Mummy' on tour and I would be grateful if you could mention her. Alyssa is from Bromley and a co-founder of Bring Your Own Baby Comedy'. She will be performing at the Churchill Theatre on 24th May this year. She is mum to Lola aged 9 and is also Chairperson of the PTA at Scotts Park Primary School. She works so hard and it’s great to have a local girl making us proud.

Christine Carrington

You must be really proud of Alyssa Christine – and how wonderful you wrote to tell us about her. Best of luck with the performances Alyssa!

I had to let you know that the lovely, planted trough of Spring flowers you arranged to be delivered to me this time last year is flowering again beautifully, welcoming visitors. Am thrilled.

History

William Brown and his creator Richmal Crompton

William Brown was born in Bromley in February 1919 when he first appeared in the monthly Home Magazine, and although during the next 50 years he has two birthdays, he remains 11 years old.

‘Just’ William, as he became known as a result of the title of the first collection of stories in book form in 1922, was the creation of Richmal Crompton Lamburn a 28-year old, unmarried teacher. A name familiar, if for no other reason, because the Wetherspoons opposite Bromley South Station bears her name. Richmal, born in 1890 in Bury, Lancashire was educated at a school for the children of the Anglican clergy in Derbyshire and then, at Royal Holloway College, London University where she graduated in 1914 with a degree in Latin, French and Maths.

She obtained her post as a Classics Mistress at Bromley High School for Girls, then situated in Elmfield Road, Bromley in the summer of 1917. Before taking up post, she and her mother moved to 9 Cherry Orchard Road on Bromley Common and she would cycle the three miles to the school each day. Because her employer had a rule that staff should have no other occupation without the headteacher’s permission and being uncertain as to whether free-lance writing counted as such, she played it safe and submitted her stories under the shorter version of her name. When it was discovered that she was the author of short stories in ‘Punch’, the Head Teacher, Miss Hodge was delighted. Richmal was an inspirational teacher and organised the school dramatic and debating societies.

Disaster struck Richmal in the summer of 1923 when she contracted polio. By the following year she could no longer

teach, and she relied on her pen to provide an income. Such was the popularity of William and other stories that within a matter of years she had a large house, ‘The Glebe’, built for her on Oakley Road, Bromley Common where she lived until 1954 when she downsized to ‘Beechcroft’ a bungalow on Chislehurst Road. All three houses still exist.

The William stories were written for adults, but it soon became clear that children were also enjoying William’s escapades. In 1922, Newnes, the publisher issued the first collection of the magazine stories in book form. The final 38th volume ‘William the Lawless’, was published posthumously the year after Richmal’s death in January 1969 aged 78.

The William stories are set in a village, the location is never specified, but it is close enough to London for his father to commute daily to the city. In the early stories, the Brown family – father, mother and elder siblings Robert and Ethel – are sufficiently well off to employ a cook and a maid and to send William to a private grammar school. William is a bright and intelligent boy but an atrocious speller, and despite sudden enthusiasms, particularly for history, he is not a model pupil. William has a group of close friends he names ‘The Outlaws’. Ginger is his lieutenant; Henry is the best informed of the Outlaws and enjoys researching subjects, whilst Douglas is slightly gloomy and pessimistic. The Outlaws use an abandoned barn as their headquarters and it is there that they first make the acquaintance of William’s nemesis Violet Elizabeth Bott, the seven-year-old lisping daughter of a self-made millionaire who has made his fortune selling ‘Bott’s Sauce’. Despite being told ‘we don’t like girls’; the Outlaws are unable to shake her off and she becomes a regular participant in their ventures. The Outlaws’ great adversary in the village is Hubert Lane and his friends the ‘Laneites’. Hubert is spoilt by his doting mother and in spite of his cunning ploys inevitably gets his comeuppance.

In addition to the William books, three feature films were made in the 1940s and there have been five separate television series since 1956, with the later series and the films being available on YouTube.

With thanks to Cllr Nicholas Bennett for his help in my research and image sourcing.

75th anniversary of Orpington Junior Singers

In June, past members of the Orpington Junior Singers (OJS) will celebrate the group’s 75th Anniversary. The girls’ choir was formed by conductor Sheila Mossman in 1949 and became well known, both locally and nationally; reported as being the “leading youth choir in Britain” in the 60s.

Among some memorable highlights, they were invited to participate in several performances under renowned conductors including Jasha Horenstein, Andre Previn and Seiji Ozawa in the Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall; the pinnacle of which may have been in the performance of Mahler’s 8th Symphony in 1966 under the baton of Leonard Bernstein, which past members vividly remember to this day.

Early significant recitals included an invitation from Winston Churchill to sing at Downing Street and patronage from Sir Arthur Bliss (President of OJS, who was Master of the Queen’s Musick). Sadly, Sheila Mossman died in 1971 at the early age of 48. The choir continued after her death under the leadership of many local conductors, with the ’curtain falling’, coincidentally, after 48 years.

Past members have been meeting annually for the past 3 years and celebrate their very fond memories at Orpington’s All Saints Church, which, extraordinarily, held the first performance of the choir in 1949. The group would be delighted to hear from anyone who has had a connection with OJS and can do so by emailing hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk or by calling 020 3488 9959.

SUPPORTING LOCAL AUTHORS…

Can you help the RNLI?

The RNLI has a fundraising branch near you! The Bromley, West Wickham and Hayes branch raises funds for the saving lives at sea, and on the River Thames; also the provision of lifeguards on many of our beaches. The busiest lifeboat station in the UK is only 13 miles away on the river Thames just 10 minutes’ walk from Charing Cross Station. Can you spend an hour or two on an occasional basis to help raise funds for Lifeboats, or maybe join a sponsored walk or cycle ride alongside the River Thames between lifeboat stations. This year, London Lifeboat Day is on Thursday 9th May when there are street collections and collections at stations across London. Can you spare an hour on two collecting for us in Bromley, or alternatively, if you travel into London, could you collect for us at the London rail terminus?

Volunteers needed for Schoolreaders

Schoolreaders, a national charity that helps children who have fallen behind with their reading, by providing free reading support to primary schools, is seeking volunteers across Greater London to go into primary schools and listen to children read. The latest SAT results showed that one in four children are still leaving primary school unable to read to the expected level, which can have a devastating impact on that child's life opportunities further down the line. Volunteers offer one to one, regular face to face reading support in primary school to help those children catch up.

Dugald Bruce-Lockhart is an actor, writer and theatre director, living in Hayes. His debut novel The Lizard was inspired by a solo backpacking trip Dugald made to Greece in the late 80s, while still a student. An adventure thriller, set on the Aegean island of Paros, the tale is ultimately about survival – the ability to rely on one’s basic animal instincts in order to live another day. The primary target audience is fans of ‘rites of passage’ stories (18- 35 years), with a secondary audience of all people, fans of mystery thrillers. The novel has enjoyed national press accolades including: ‘An impressive debut...written with huge verve, the story twists and turns like a malign serpent’ – by The Daily Mail, and has been optioned for a six-part television series, and is with broadcasters and streamers awaiting sale. Dugald’s follow up novel, Second Skin is to be published this May.

The Lizard is available in Waterstones and Foyles or available from Amazon and online from WH Smith and other retailers.

If you’re a local author or know of one, email hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk for the chance to be featured.

Bromley selected for London Festival of Architecture

The London Festival of Architecture is an annual celebration of architecture and city-making, which takes place across London but with a focus on the chosen destinations each year. The theme for 2024 is ‘Reimagine’, with the festival calling for events that put people at the heart of London and rethink public spaces. This builds on the success of last year’s festival, which saw the incredible local history and architecture of Crystal Palace and Penge celebrated through a series of tours, workshops, installations and family events. The Penge and Palace trail guided residents and visitors through some of the highlights of Penge’s past and present, much of which will be on display again this year.

This year, Bromley is expanding its focus to highlight five of the areas that shape Bromley as it is today - Bromley Town Centre, Chislehurst, Darwin, Orpington and Penge –these and more will be showcased as part of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) this June.

This London-wide celebration, delivered in partnership with the Council, Bromley’s Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and Chislehurst Society, will see events take place to highlight Bromley’s history and public spaces.

5 Minutes With

David Winstanley

CEO at London Biggin Hill Airport

London Biggin Hill Airport (LBHA) is one of the largest employers within the borough, with over 70 companies employing more than 1,400 people on the 500-acre airport site. It’s no mean feat for the airport’s CEO, David Winstanley. Here, we catch up with David to find out what his job entails as well as get the lowdown on the airport’s upcoming plans…

David – can you provide a brief history of your background in the run up to you being appointed CEO of LBHA?

Of course. I began my career in the Royal Air Force (RAF) at Biggin Hill, back in 1984, in the Officers Aircrew Selection Centre - which still stands today. I was lucky enough to enjoy 20 years in the RAF, initially as an Air Traffic Controller and later focused on Leadership Development before retiring as a Wing Commander. After the military, I joined Birmingham Airport in 2007, initially in a safety role and then Operations Director and became Chief Operating Officer in 2014. I joined London Biggin Hill Airport as its first CEO in 2019.

What are your main responsibilities and duties?

As CEO I am ultimately responsible for setting the strategic direction of the company and for establishing the culture to achieve this. On a day-to-day basis, I am responsible for creating the environment in which all my colleagues can contribute to the running of the business.

What does a typical day look like for you?

No two days are ever the same! I’m involved in every part of our business and each day can bring new challenges and opportunities. Flexibility, adaptability and effective time management are essential, and I am lucky to be surrounded by a brilliant team of colleagues. A CEO is only as good as the team they build.

Do you have any exciting plans or projects in the pipeline for LBHA that you can share with us? London Biggin Hill Airport’s main focus for 2024 is job creation. Over the last decade, sustained investment in new infrastructure has attracted global business, including Formula One and Bombardier - the world’s leading manufacturer of business jets. We want to create even more opportunities and make sure local people are benefiting directly.

Can you tell us more about how you are helping to inspire the next generation?

We are passionate about engaging young people and opening the door to a career in aerospace and engineering from an early age. That’s why we are investing heavily in training opportunities and working closely with local schools and colleges. From apprenticeships to work

community

experience, school visits and our Futures Week, we have an opportunity for every learning style and career path, and this will continue to be one of our key ambitions in 2024. In Futures Week, students aged 15-18 spend a week with us here at the airport and experience a range of interactive activities and careers advice, talks from inspirational people and immersive visits to our resident aerospace companies.

What advice would you give to the 17-year-old you?

Your future is not pre-determined and trust your instincts… everything will work out! Although maybe not in the way you expect.

When you’re not busy overseeing LBHA, how do you relax?

Like many people I enjoy reading and I also like to sketch, which helps me to wind down after a busy day. I also enjoy puzzles, the more pieces and complexity the better!

What measures has the airport put into place when it comes to sustainability – and how important is this on the agenda?

Incredibly important. The entire aviation industry has a responsibility to reduce emissions and create a sustainable future – and we are fully committed to playing our part. Our goal is to achieve carbon neutral status by 2029. We are already working closely with operators and resident businesses to explore new fuel technology, which will mean that aircraft operating from London Biggin Hill in the future will be quieter and emissions will be reduced. We want to be at the forefront of this change, delivering a cleaner, greener and leaner business for everyone.

LBHA is a community advocate and a keen supporter of local initiatives, recently evidenced by the sponsorship of the annual Above & Beyond Bromley Business Awards. How important is it for the airport to support such initiatives within the community?

We are committed to ensuring that our community feels the benefit of our airport so that when we succeed, the local people do too. Our Community Fund supports a range of partnerships and initiatives with local charities and organisations, totalling £98,000 since 2015. Most recently, we became a lead partner for Bromley Football Club Community Sports Trust’s Women and Girls Strategy, which aims to drive participation and create equal opportunities for women and girls of every age and background.

Local Hero...

(Because not all heroes wear capes)

Sarah Marsh-Collings

Mark Browne nominated Sarah Marsh-Collings as a local hero. He said: “Sarah does a fair bit for charities. She is always raising money for animals. Sarah is currently training for a half marathon for the RSPCA and has attended Muddy dog challenges too. She gives a lot of help and support to those around her.”

Hey Sarah! How does it feel to be nominated as a local hero by Mark?

Surprised! My first reaction was, ‘Oh, that’s so lovely!’ and my next reaction was, ‘where does the hero bit come in?’ So, I’m flattered and surprised and really quite chuffed.

Can you tell us more about your volunteering?

I love animals, especially dogs, so I’ve volunteered with Brittany’s Needing Homes (BNH), a grassroots organisation that rescues hunting dogs in Spain and where I found my Brittany Spaniel, Barney. I’ve participated in the Muddy Dog Challenge each year since 2018: a 5k obstacle course with your dog. In April, I'm running the London Landmarks Half Marathon for the RSPCA. I’ve joined Rotary events like swimathons and Christmas collections. I volunteer with the Skills 30:30 initiative, where business owners visit schools to talk to pupils, bridging the gap between school and work. I’ve volunteered with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) since 2018 and ran online events through the pandemic. At the beginning of lockdown, with Chandra Sharma, Zeenat Noorani and Piyush Patel, we set up Business Continuity Support and ran online sessions. Guest speakers were chosen for the skills they could impart to business owners struggling to survive lockdown and take their businesses online. I’m quite proud of that because not only did we provide people with access to valuable resources, but it also supported the mental health of many within our business community. We gave them some routine, some normality when the world was anything but normal. People said it really helped them. I think that’s it. Oh, I participated in Zeenat Noorani’s and Mercedes Yearley’s Christmas Panto.

Why is it important for you to get involved in helping charities and with volunteering?

Why NOT get involved? You can sit on the sidelines and complain or get up and affect the change you want to see. We have a collective responsibility to look out for each other. Knowing you’ve helped change lives is empowering.

What advice would you give to others looking to volunteer?

Do it! Pick a subject close to your heart, find a charity that deals with it and ask them how you can help.

What projects are you currently involved in?

I plan to run a 10k Tough Mudder next year, fundraising for Tag Pet Rescue and BNH. And I’ll be panto-ing again!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love walking my dogs. And food: eating out and cooking. I enjoy the movies and the theatre, supporting Bromley Little Theatre and the Churchill Theatre when I can. And obviously, I spend time keeping my fitness up so I can keep fundraising!

You’ve got your own business as well. Can you tell us a little bit more about that?

babelMonkey is a digital marketing agency I launched in February 2014. We “create chatter” about Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through online activity to raise their profile and sell more of their products and services. Ultimately, I’d love to have offices with meeting rooms on a mezzanine. Downstairs would be a co-working space with bean bags, couches, high tables, regular desks and standing desks, and all the good stuff like coffee and cake – so it would be a centre for the business community as well as being babelMonkey HQ. And in the middle, a tree with a slide and a ball pit for people to land in. It’s important to keep a sense of fun in business – as small business owners, we get so caught up in the stresses involved we forget to have fun. Then what’s it all for?

What does community mean to you?

It means like-minded people coming together to support each other and to progress a common cause. The word ‘community’ is derived from the Latin word ‘communitas’, which translates to ‘fellowship’. I quite like being part of a fellowship. It’s like having an extended family – with a purpose. And yes, I’m a Tolkien fan, although sadly, more Hobbit than Elf!

MAYOR’S VOICE community

11-year-old Betsi Powley and The Mayor of Bromley

For over 30 years, the Mayor has had the privilege of holding the annual Mayor of Bromley Awards, a ceremony recognising local volunteering stars from across Bromley, who work tirelessly to enhance our great borough. This year I had the privilege of giving out ten awards to volunteers who are a shining example of Bromley’s community spirit. The youngest recipient was 11-yearold Betsi Powley, who had an incredibly inspirational journey through her successful cancer treatment and subsequent fundraising. This included giving out adaptive pyjamas to children in hospitals, which Betsi designed to better meet the needs of children going through similar experiences to her.

Further contributions this year include from Katrina O’Leary, a local campaigner for Changing Places toilets who has worked with the Council to see six new facilities introduced across the borough to support residents with complex disabilities. John Bruce was recognised for contributions to various organisations like Bromley Children and Families Forum and Bromley Rotary. As was Gary Valentine, for his contributions including to The MumMum Foundation, one of my chosen charities this year, supporting families dealing with cancer.

Tony Banfield was awarded for over 40 years of contributions to heritage in Bromley, including as Chair of Bromley Civic Society. Dr Judy John was

And so it’s April. That’s one third into the year already. But great news that the nights are getting longer and spring lambs are leaping over high and low ground, surrounded by pretty yellow daffodils waving the approach of better weather. Oh, and April showers? These days are more unpredictable. Remember those recent and unexpected storms? A reminder to carry umbrellas with us at all times.

As I work away so much, I always try to pack economically and practically, however, recently, I came amiss.

also recognised for all her endeavours in support of Bromley’s biodiversity. David Vallade was acknowledged for his commitment to Crystal Palace Park, including as Chair of the park’s Friends group. Eddie Green was awarded for efforts in support of the Mottingham community, including establishing a weekly community lunch.

Margaret Wilmot was awarded for dedicated service to St. George's RAF Chapel in Biggin Hill and Barbara Arora was recognised for her role in establishing and supporting the Friends of Chislehurst and Walden Recreation Grounds.

These ten volunteers are heroes of our community and I am so pleased that we can show our recognition in this way for all they do. Ceremonies like this highlight what really makes a difference to so many residents, providing important support for a host of worthy causes and helping make Bromley such a special place to live.

My dry hair was sticking out in all directions

I was booked to give one of my after-dinner talks and would be staying in the hotel where the function was taking place. Having looked up the hotel and read that it had a lovely spa, I decided to go a day earlier and enjoy a bit of selfpampering. I arrived, had a massage and went to bed early. The next morning, the morning of the event, I was up with the lark, and slipping into my bathing costume went back down to the spa and dived into the pool. Heaven. I swam a bit, stepped into the jacuzzi feeling wonderful. I showered and washed my hair, but as I was drying my hair, I remembered I hadn’t brought my curling tongs with me. My now dry hair was sticking out in all directions. I hurried back to my room desperately thinking what to do. I had to stand up in front of two hundred people and give

my talk later, and my hair currently was looking like it had had an electric shock. I then remembered that when I was filming the series Hi-De-Hi, the hairdresser used a cut up old sheet to tie my hair into period curls every night during filming. Cutting up this bed sheet belonging to this hotel wasn’t an option, but I remembered that I always travel with half a dozen pairs of spare knickers (just a habit). So, problem solved, I could curl my hair with these and stay in my room all day with a book. It would work: two for each side and two for the back, creating perfect curls. The evening came, my knickers had worked, and I went down with curly hair and a smile on my face. My talk went very well and I popped to the ladies to powder my nose and reapply my lippy. However, as I lifted my arm to comb the back of my hair, something blocked me. I turned my head and to my horror, realised I had omitted to take out the scarlet G-string knickers, which were bordered with black and white zebra print ribbon, that I had tied into the back of my hair. I had just stood in front of 218 diners and talked for an hour, walking around the tables as I talked, they couldn’t have missed it! Well, my G-string may have been bright red, but now it looked dull in comparison to my cheeks which now glowed redder than Rudolph’s nose.

INSIGHTS FROM THE SUPER

I have just returned from the first Bromley Anti-Social Behaviour Conference, hosted by the Safer Neighbourhood Board (SNB) at Bromley Football Club. I’d like to note my thanks to the SNB for organising this and to the football club for accommodating us. It was great to be at a community club where from our conference room we could see the teams training. It was also great to get out of the usual environment of the police station.

It was an interesting and engaging day with around 90 police, partners, councillors, community and others all gathered to discuss Anti-Social Behaviour and how it affects the communities of Bromley. We all pooled our ideas to outline key themes and the biggest problems. This was followed by some great input from Dr Aiden Sidebottom from University College London as to how

we can use Problem Solving methodology to tackle these issues as a partnership. Then followed inputs from the police, the London Fire Brigade and the Local Authority as to our shared roles and responsibilities in tackling this issue and how we can all work together. I felt really positive being part of such a committed group of partners.

Anti-Social Behaviour negatively affects so many people and makes life in the community feel less safe. This makes it essential that we give this issue our proper attention, by using our partnership to properly identify problems, analyse and understand them, before coming up with bespoke local solutions to local problems. We are committed to this and will continue to do so. Work also continues on our Retail Crime Working Group (which includes a lot of overlap with Anti-Social Behaviour), and our efforts to target vehicle-based Anti-Social Behaviour. I will keep you posted as we move forward.

Superintendent Luke Baldock Bromley Borough Neighbourhood Policing

Firefront line..

Over the winter we see a change in the weather and how that can affect us. Often caused by increased rainfall we look at how to prepare for flooding in our community.

Who should I call if my street is flooding?

If you can see water building up in the street, call Floodline on 0345 988 1188. Water building up on the street can quickly turn into an emergency. If you feel that you or someone else is in danger, call 999 immediately.

What should I do?

The main priority is to ensure you, your employees and customers are safe. In the event of a flood there are steps you can take.

• Make sure your phone is charged, so that you can call for help if required

• Send your employees home if it is safe to do so

• In an emergency be ready to turn off your gas supply, turn off your water supply and turn off your electricity supply if possible.

• If you’re using candles for light, make sure you follow our safety advice at www.london-fire.gov.uk/safety/thehome/candles

• Think about a safe place you could go to if flood water

comes into your business. Don’t put yourself in danger to get there. If you are in a basement or ground floor unit, this could include moving to a unit or flat on a higher level.

Always follow advice from Floodline or the emergency services if you have called them. Never put yourself or others in unnecessary danger.

Is there anything I can do to stop my property from flooding?

There are steps you can take to try and limit the damage to your property.

• Use flood barriers to divert the water away from your business and to prevent it entering. You can buy flood defences online or from a local hardware store.

• If possible (and without putting yourself at risk) move belongings to a higher level.

• Flood water can come in through toilets, so be prepared to sandbag your bathroom doors or block your toilet.

MOVING HOME: A GUIDE TO PACKING UP & SETTLING IN

Moving home can be both exciting and daunting, but with the right approach and a bit of planning, you can make the transition smooth and stressfree. Here’s how…

First of all, stock up on packing materials such as sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap and packing paper. Label boxes clearly with the contents and the room they belong to. Aim to pack room by room and start with larger items and furniture, then move on to smaller items and accessories. Use bubble wrap or packing paper to protect fragile items such as glassware, dishes and ornaments. Pack these items snugly in boxes and label them as fragile. If possible, disassemble large furniture pieces such as beds, tables and shelves for easier transport. Keep screws, bolts, and hardware organised in labelled bags. Finally, pack essentials separately and set aside a box of the ones you’ll need on arrival such as toiletries, medications, important documents and a change of clothes.

What rooms to pack first?

Start with non-essentials: Pack up items that you won't need immediate access to, such as seasonal clothing, decorative items and infrequently used kitchen gadgets.

Tackle storage areas: Clear out cupboards, cabinets and storage rooms early on to declutter and create more space for packing. Sort through belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or discard.

Pack up spare rooms: If you have spare bedrooms or guest rooms, pack up these spaces next. Bedding, linens and decor can be boxed up and stored away until needed in your new home.

How to allergy proof your home

1.  Regular cleaning: Vacuuming regularly and dusting surfaces with a damp cloth can help remove pollen, dust particles and pet dander (fur and skin particles) that can aggravate allergy symptoms. Don’t forget hidden areas such as behind sofas and the corners of the room.

2.  Extractor fans: Use an extractor fan in the kitchen and bathroom to remove moisture and particles whenever in use. Switch the extractor fan on before pre-heating the oven and leave it running while you cook and for a few minutes after you’ve finished. Similarly, keep the extractor fan on during showering or bathing, as this will remove excess moisture.

3.  Clothing & laundry: Clothes and shoes can carry pollen and be transferred indoors, so wash clothes thoroughly and change clothes straightaway if

Kitchen and bathroom: Leave essentials in the kitchen and bathroom until closer to moving day. Pack up nonperishable food items, cookware and toiletries in the days leading up to the move.

Last-minute items: As moving day approaches, pack up remaining items such as clothing, toiletries and everyday essentials. Keep a ‘last-minute’ box handy for items you'll need right away in your new home.

Your essential checklist

Notify relevant parties of your change of address, including banks, utility companies and government agencies.

Arrange for mail forwarding with the Royal Mail. Transfer or set up utilities and services at your new address.

Arrange for removals or transport of your belongings to your new home.

Update your address on important documents such as driving license, insurance policies and voter registration.

The timeline

• 8 weeks before: Start decluttering and packing nonessential items.

• 6 weeks before: Arrange for removals or transportation services.

• 4 weeks before: Notify relevant parties of your change of address.

• 2 weeks before: Pack up remaining items and essentials.

• Moving day: Supervise the loading and transport of your belongings to your new home.

you’ve been outside. If you’re a hay fever sufferer, avoid drying your washing outside as this is a magnet for pollen which can fall on and cling to damp clothes or bedsheets.

4.  Ventilation: Hay fever sufferers should keep windows and doors shut as much as possible, particularly during high pollen count days. The pollen counts are highest between 5am and 10am, so limit exposure outside during these times. Open windows and doors in the evening to prevent locking irritants into rooms.

5.  Bedding: Pillows should ideally be changed every 18 months. Within two years use, one-third of a pillow’s weight comprises of dirt, oil, dead skin and dust mites – not good news for allergy sufferers. Use allergen-proof barrier covers on the mattress, duvet and pillows to prevent allergens taking hold and regularly wash all bedding.

FIVE WAYS TO LOVE YOUR PETS FOR LESS Pets

Pets are at the heart of many families, but the cost of care can rack up quickly. In the midst of rising household bills, many Brits are now struggling to manage pet costs. Here are five wallet-friendly tips – courtesy of the experts at NetVoucherCodes.co.uk – to ensure your furry friends receive the care they deserve without breaking the bank…

1. Bulk buying

Opt for buying pet food in bulk, particularly for dogs and cats. Although the initial cost might be higher, over time it proves to be the more economical choice that could save you hundreds. Ensure you store the food correctly to maximise its shelf life.

2. Affordable alternatives

Whilst we all want to provide our pets with the best diet possible, expensive brands aren’t necessarily the better option. Ingredients can be the same between numerous brands, so learning what ingredients are key to your pet’s diet will allow you the freedom to shop around for cheaper alternatives without compromising your pet’s nutrition.

Did you know…?

A cat’s sense of smell is around 14 times better than that of a human? Whilst dogs have around 300 million olfactory receptors compared with 200 million in cats, studies have shown that cats have a far superior ability to distinguish between scents compared to dogs. Recent studies have begun to unlock the science behind cats’ incredible sense of smell, and scientists may even use the intricate structure of a cat’s nose to inspire improvements in modern laboratory equipment!

3. Reconsider day-care

Traditional day-care for dogs can be pricey. Instead, explore dog sitting communities in your local area or enlist the help of family and friends. Planning ahead and making early arrangements can significantly reduce expenses whilst ensuring your pets receive the attention they need.

4. Vet payment plans

Vet payment plans allow you to spread the costs of expensive treatments across several months, making it more manageable for your budget.

5. Second-hand supplies

Take advantage of the wide selection of online marketplaces to find the pet supplies you need. Items like dog crates and fish tanks are great finds – just ensure the items have been thoroughly cleaned to ensure your pet’s safety. Make sure to stay clear of second-hand chew toys though.

Foods to avoid feeding your dog

It’s a well-known fact that chocolate is toxic for dogs. But did you know that there are many other household foods that are equally as dangerous? Pet insurance specialists, Protectivity, has compiled a list of common foods to avoid feeding to our pooches...

• Grapes and raisins – a naturally low-calorie and fat-free snack for owners, but few people know they are toxic to dogs. Grapes and raisins can cause canine kidney failure, even in small amounts.

• Macadamia nuts – these are a popular pregym snack for those looking for a quick energy boost. However, they can cause weakness, vomiting and hypothermia in dogs.

• Onions and garlic – these are toxic for dogs in all forms (whether powdered, raw, dehydrated, or cooked). They can destroy a dog’s red blood cells and lead to anaemia.

• Dairy products – yoghurt, low-fat cheese and milk are great sources of protein and calcium for humans. However, many dogs are lactose intolerant and will experience digestive problems if they consume dairy.

THE MOST COMMONLY LEAKED PASSWORDS

A new study has revealed the most commonly leaked passwords, with some surprising trends. Database experts Red9 analysed the number of times commonly used passwords appeared within publicly posted data breaches by running each of them through HaveIBeenPwned.com.

The most common password within breaches was found to be ‘123456’, which has been seen a staggering 42,542,807 times and accounted for more than one in five (21.65%) of all appearances. According to brute force calculators, this simple numerical password can be cracked almost instantly – which is extremely worrying for the millions of users who continue to use

In second place is ‘123456789’ and in third place is the first alphabetic password on the list, ‘qwerty’, which makes use of the first five letters on the standard computer keyboard.

4 cool technology hacks for everyday living

1. Automate your home: Use smart home devices like smart plugs, thermostats and light bulbs to automate routine tasks such as turning on/off lights, adjusting the temperature and controlling appliances with voice commands or smartphone apps.

2. Save time with keyboard shortcuts: Learn and use keyboard shortcuts on your computer and smartphone to navigate apps, perform tasks and switch between programmes more efficiently.

3. Maximise battery life: Extend the battery life of your devices by adjusting settings such as screen brightness, background app refresh and push notifications.

4. Automate repetitive tasks: Use automation tools like IFTTT (If This Then That) or Zapier to automate repetitive tasks across various apps and devices. For example, you can automatically save email attachments to cloud storage or post social media updates across multiple platforms simultaneously.

Mark Varnas, Founder of Red9, said: “Employing a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters, and avoiding easily guessable information such as names and birthdays, can significantly bolster the resilience of passwords against unauthorised access. Regularly updating passwords further fortifies your defence against potential security threats.”

‘Ask James’

Q: What is the cloud, and should I be using it?

Imagine your phone bursting with photos, your laptop overflowing with documents, and your music collection taking up all the space on your tablet. That's where the cloud comes in. It's like a magic storage locker in the sky, accessible from any device, anywhere. Think of it like this:

• No more carrying around a ton of stuff: All your files, photos, and even music can be stashed safely in the cloud, accessible from your phone, laptop, anywhere in the world.

• Optimises physical storage: If you have more files than your computer can handle, the Cloud can help offload the heavy files and keep streamlined versions accessible.

• Safer than a superhero's vault: The cloud keeps your stuff safe even if your device gets lost or breaks, like a digital Fort Knox. Just remember, use a strong password with 2FA.

But there are a few things to keep in mind:

• You need a good internet connection: The cloud is like a streaming service for your stuff, so you need a decent internet connection to access it smoothly.

• Security matters: Choose a reputable cloud provider that takes good care of your data, like a trustworthy friend for your digital belongings.

• Switching clouds can be a hassle: Moving your stuff from one cloud to another can be a bit tricky, so choose wisely.

So, should you use the cloud?

It's a super convenient and secure way to store your stuff, but it's not essential for everyone. If you're tired of juggling devices and worrying about losing files, the cloud might be your new best friend.

Got a question related to technology or IT? Send it to hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk with the subject line ‘Ask James’.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR BANK & SAVINGS ACCOUNTS

The cost of living crisis and spiralling inflation has led to the Bank of England hiking interest rates. While this has been a blow for many mortgage borrowers, it has led to more competitive savings rates hitting the market.

Which? magazine has analysed the best savings accounts currently available to consumers and has also found other ways for people to make the most from their bank accounts.

Find the best savings account for you

There are various different ways to save your money, including regular savings accounts, instant-access accounts, and fixed-rate bonds. When choosing between them, consider how often you’d like to be able to deposit and withdraw savings. At the time of going to press, one of the best restriction-free instant-access savings rates was 3.15% AER (Annual Equivalent Rate), offered by Chip. However, you can find higher interest rates with a fixed-rate account.

Take advantage of switching offers

If you’re already looking to move banks, it’s worth seeing what incentives are on offer first. Switching to a new provider takes just seven working days and can often earn you a cash bonus. For instance, NatWest recently launched its highest-ever switching incentive (£200) for new and existing customers who move to its current accounts – and other banks offer similar incentives.

New on the shelves…

Modibodi has unveiled its latest TEEN First Period Kit (RRP £27.50), making it easier for teens to navigate school with confidence during their periods. Designed in collaboration with UK-based illustrator, Justyna Green, the custom box includes everything for teens to manage their cycle including a choice of one or two pairs of Modibodi Black Hipster Bikinis in Moderate-Heavy absorbency; a waterproof bag; an exclusive illustrated Modibodi comic and sticker kit; and a handheld mirror for self-exploration. The new underwear and dancewear designs feature three layers of built-in technology, so teens don’t have to worry about leakage during activities. For details see modibodi.com

Packaged bank account perks

Packaged bank accounts offer perks such as travel insurance, breakdown cover or mobile phone insurance, in exchange for a monthly fee. Packaged accounts can offer a cheaper and more convenient way to insure yourself, but read the terms and conditions carefully. Remember that these accounts are only worth having if you make the most of the benefits and services you’re paying for.

Earn rewards & cashback

Cashback can help you make money on your spending. Many banks and building societies offer cashback on monthly bills and loyalty rewards as an incentive to open or retain an account. Some pay as much as £20 per month. The Santander 123 account was ranked highly by Which? and pays up to 3% cashback on selected household bills, capped at £5 per cashback tier each month – however, it also comes with a £4 monthly fee.

Check the overdraft fees

Going overdrawn can be costly, especially as some accounts charge up to 39.9% EAR (Effective Annual Rate). If your bank charges a high rate of interest, it could be worth checking to see if you can switch to an account that offers a lower one – particularly if you use an overdraft regularly. Nationwide currently offers a free authorised overdraft on its FlexDirect account, subject to status, but this only lasts for the first year.

EAT THE RAINBOW & NOURISH YOUR BODY NATURALLY

Research reveals that around one in five of us are vitamin deficient. Common signs of not getting enough key nutrients in your diet include tiredness and fatigue, muscle weakness, low mood, recurrent coughs and colds and disrupted sleep. However, with a bit of know-how and some delicious culinary creativity, you can easily meet your daily vitamin requirements through the food you eat. Here’s how:

Colourful plate: Aim for a rainbow on your plate. Different coloured fruits and vegetables signify diverse nutrient profiles. For instance, orange fruits like carrots and sweet potatoes are packed with vitamin A, while leafy greens such as spinach and kale are excellent sources of vitamin K and folate.

Power of citrus: Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and grapefruits are loaded with vitamin C, essential for a healthy immune system. Start your day with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or add lemon slices to your water for a zesty boost.

5 reasons why getting outdoors is good for you

1. Reduced cortisol levels: Studies have shown that spending time in nature can lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that just 20-30 minutes in nature can significantly reduce cortisol levels.

2. Improved mood: According to research published in Environmental Science & Technology, spending time outdoors, especially in green spaces, can enhance mood and reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and depression.

3. Enhanced wellbeing: A report by Mind, a mental health charity in the UK, highlighted that activities like walking in nature can improve overall well-being, reduce stress levels and boost self-esteem.

4. Better sleep: Exposure to natural light during the day, which you often get when you're outdoors, helps regulate your body's internal clock, leading to better sleep at night. The National Sleep Foundation suggests that spending time outdoors can improve sleep quality.

5. Increased physical activity: Whether it's hiking, cycling or simply taking a stroll, being outdoors often involves physical activity, which releases endorphins and helps combat stress. It is recommended that we have at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week for stress relief.

Dairy delights: Milk, cheese and yogurt are not only rich in calcium but also provide essential vitamins like D and B12. Incorporate yogurt into your breakfast routine, sprinkle cheese on your salads or simply enjoy a glass of milk as a midday snack.

Omega-3 rich foods: Foods such as salmon, flaxseeds and walnuts are abundant in omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health and brain function. Try adding salmon to your dinner rotation or sprinkling flaxseeds over your morning oatmeal.

Whole grains galore: Opt for whole grains like quinoa, brown rice and oats, which are not only high in fibre but also contain important B vitamins. Start your day with a bowl of oatmeal topped with berries for a nutritious breakfast.

Don’t forget the lentils: Beans, lentils, and chickpeas are not only budget-friendly but also packed with vitamins and minerals like folate, iron and magnesium. Whip up a hearty bean stew or toss chickpeas into your salad for an extra nutrient punch.

A Final Thought… community

A fit community is a happy community

We can all do our bit to ease pressures on the NHS and free up care facilities for those who really need them if we keep ourselves fit and improve our levels of physical fitness. My previous work with the Director of Public Health in the South East London Health Authority taught me that physically fit people are:

• Less likely to suffer falls in bad weather;

• Less likely to need hospital treatment if they do;

• More likely to recover quickly from any injuries that they might suffer;

• More resistant to colds and flu;

• Less likely to need to hospital admission for their ailments;

• More likely to make a quick recovery from ailments that they might suffer.

We are all aware of the crisis facing our NHS at present, with growing waiting lists and longer waiting times for treatment of people who have suffered accidents and illnesses. So it’s more important than ever for us to keep fit – but are we?

Getting fit does not mean hours of pumping iron at the gym, working up for the Tour de France or preparing for the London Marathon. Going for a walk can be just as effective. A study by the Institute of Sports Medicine proved that a 10km walk has all the health benefits of a 10km run. Both involve the same muscle groups, require the same level of cardio-vascular activity and both involve moving the same weight over the same distance. Walking just takes longer.

Of course, not everyone has the confidence to go off on a long country ramble on their own, which is where walking groups can help. Joining a walking group gives the benefit of social contact as well as fitness, curbing the effects of social isolation which can be a factor in reducing resilience and making folk more vulnerable. Socialising outdoors cuts the risk of spreading viruses compared to indoor socialising too.

health perspective, walking is an excellent way to improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen muscles and maintain a healthy weight. Regular walking can help reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Studies have shown that even moderate-intensity walking for 30 minutes a day can significantly lower the risk of these ailments.

Moreover, walking promotes better mental health by reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Spending time outdoors in nature while walking can elevate mood, boost self-esteem and enhance overall wellbeing. The rhythmic motion of walking can also induce a meditative state, leading to improved clarity of thought and increased creativity.

Additionally, walking provides social opportunities and fosters a sense of community. Whether walking with friends, family, or participating in walking groups and events, it offers a chance for social interaction and connection.

And finally, it’s environmentally friendly and sustainable, requiring no special equipment or resources other than a good pair of shoes. It reduces carbon emissions associated with transportation and promotes eco-friendly modes of travel.

As the chair of Enbro, we run a wide range of public walks, many of which are dog-friendly and cater for a wide range of abilities and levels of fitness. All of the public walks are free of charge and there is no need to book either – just check the programme online at www.enbro.org.uk

Walking offers a myriad of benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing, making it one of the simplest yet most effective forms of exercise. Some key advantages are that it is accessible to almost everyone regardless of age, fitness level or location. From a physical

The organisation endeavours to achieve these aims by protecting and maintaining footpaths, promoting the use, enjoyment and understanding of the countryside by a programme of interpretive walks and other means deemed appropriate.
