History
Pam Preedy
‘To be or not to be?’ A history of Bromley’s Theatre by PAM PREEDY
I remember my parents were keen theatre-goers. There was a special deal in the 1950s at Bromley’s New Theatre: two seats for the price of one, on Mondays. Who doesn’t like a bargain? At the time we had no knowledge of the vicissitudes of the theatre’s life or the various names it had been given: the Grand Hall (from 1889), the Lyric (from 1905), the New (from 1948) and the Churchill (opened on 19 July 1977). In 1889 the Grand Hall and Country Club opened with a pantomime. It was built on a site behind two shops; numbers 22 and 23 High Street (now Lidl’s), built partly over a former duck pond. The auditorium contained a large swimming pool, intended to be boarded over for dances or theatricals, and above the stage was a tank capable of holding 1,000+ gallons of water. At first the pool was used by school children in 1891 for 1½d. a week, but in 1891 it developed a leak and was permanently closed. There were some early successes with such offerings as the lecture by Dr Barnardo about rescuing waifs and strays (1890) and performances of The Mikado and The Gondoliers by the D’Oyley Carte Opera Company (1891), but there was always the problem of getting licences to put on performances. Censorship was introduced by Henry VIII (1553) to theatres to prevent the stage from being used for religious propaganda. Other restrictions followed: Oliver Cromwell (1653-1658) banned all plays to prevent public disorder; Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole (1737) tightened up the censorship of drama to prevent political satire against him, stating that the Lord Chamberlain with his Examiners of Plays must vet any script before a performance. The theatre in Bromley was subject to the theatre licencing laws which controlled what could be performed and how often. In the 30 years after opening the Grand Hall underwent a number of changes; from a full refurbishment which included the repair of the roof, fireproof curtain, adjustment of the counterweights and a permanent floor

over the pool supported by steel girders and started a new life as the Lyric Theatre on 4th February, 1899. The managers continued to produce dramas such as Hamlet, School for Scandal and David Garrick (1905) but they were poorly attended. Other highlights were variety shows and lectures. From 1907 ‘silent movies’ gained popularity. They came to Bromley to the Grand Hall, now billed as ‘The Premiere Picture Theatre’, accompanied by a huge orchestra. When ‘talkies’ came to England in the twenties the theatre was taken over by the Provincial Cinematograph Theatres (PCT) chain and in 1934 came under the control of the Gaumont British Theatres chain. They operated the Grand Theatre as a cine-variety house until they closed it in May 1937, once their massive 2,498 seat Gaumont super cinema opened (now the home of ‘Dreams’). The Grand still produced some live shows and was converted into a strictly live theatre venue, but in 1940, it was requisitioned by the Government to become food stores for the duration of World War II. After the war, the building was de-requisitioned, reopening on 26th December 1947 as the New Theatre and was served by a repertory company. This meant that while one group performed another group was rehearsing - they had to be word perfect). The system gave opportunities to new actors such as David Jason where they could learn their craft. On 6th May 1971 The New Theatre was destroyed by fire. The remains were later demolished. In 1977, out of the ashes, like a phoenix, on a site adjacent to the old theatre, the Churchill Theatre and Library rose, at a cost of about £4,431,000, though with the sale of shops and grants from the Arts Council and other sources of finance the final cost to the ratepayer was about £1,630,000. (The Theatres of Bromley by Sheila Dunn is a delightful book which intertwines the history of our theatre with details of life in Bromley at the time)

MAYOR’S VOICE It’s a busy time for the Mayoral team as we head towards the winter months, with so much happening across the borough and many exciting events taking place. Last month the borough’s history was on full display thanks to Heritage Open Days and Open House Festival, where great spaces and places opened their doors to visitors looking to explore their local neighbourhoods. I thoroughly enjoyed the various talks and tours as part of this, including learning more about Bromley town centre from Bromley Civic Society and about the fascinating history of the Battle of Britain Lace Panel that is now on display in Bromley Central Library. I know the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Keith Onslow and Sara Onslow, also enjoyed finding out about the Tudor origins of the Scadbury Moated Manor. The highlight for me had to be reopening of the stunning Bromley Old Town Hall, with the impressive new restaurant, boutique hotel and stylish workspaces breathing new life into important heritage in the heart of Bromley. This last month has also given me plenty of opportunities to meet those working hard to support health and wellbeing of residents across the borough. I had the pleasure of joining St Christopher’s for their AGM recently, of handing out staff awards for the Gracious Care team in Farnborough, and joining the Primrose Centre for their open day to hear more about their great work supporting

residents with breast cancer. A particularly innovative imitative was the new Connections Café, who are promoting wellness through drama in a series of free events run by Radfield Home Care Bromley. The first week of November is the annual Befriending Week, which highlights the important networks and support that is available in various ways to those who need it. As Bromley’s Loneliness Champion, I am enheartened by the passion I have seen from the host of opportunities created across the borough for residents to come together. I am sure Befriending Week will add further to this supply, which I and the council will look to share with residents wherever we can. Do not forget that you can follow along with my Mayoral journey on social media and look back at all the other events we have been attending. Perhaps you missed the London Pearly Kings and Queens' Costermongers Harvest Festival which saw much singing and merriment, including the obligatory dance around the Maypole alongside the Mayoress, Councillor Kim Botting, and Bromley's very own Pearly King, Chris Conlan. Hello November. The month of fireworks and rockets and all thing flying skywards. I was born on Fire-work day. My mother always said the sound of the loud whooping and explosions startled her and brought me into the world. I was reminded of this forthcoming anniversary a few weeks ago.

Joe Appiah
Father of two, Joe Appiah, has lived in the Bromley borough for six years. Joe is a world record holder in athletics and enjoys inspiring young people. When he’s not busy training or working, Joe likes to relax, travel and socialise with close friends. Hey Joe! How’s things and what have you been up to recently? This summer l have been supporting local athletics events as part of the starters team. I have also been delivering career path presentations in schools as a volunteer for ‘Inspiring the Future’. Over the last nine months, l have delivered Men’s Health presentations at my workplace to over 500+ staff.
You’re a world record holder! Tell us more and how you manage training while working full time? I compete in Masters Athletics over sprint hurdles, and I am a six times World Masters Athletics Champion in 100m and 60m hurdles. I used to play semi-professional football in the Kent League and Essex League in the 90s until l retired at 29. I then took up athletics seriously, and discovered masters’ athletics which starts from age 35. I train three days a week which takes a lot of discipline and dedication after completing a full day’s work. Training and competition gives me focus, a purpose and another dimension in my life - it helps me mentally to face the challenges of life.
How did you get into athletics and what do you enjoy about it? I got into athletics by chance. My work colleagues knew l was quick on the football field; they asked me to be part of their 4x100m relay team at work’s sports day. The following year’s sports day l entered the individual 100m and came third place. After this, l was hooked and joined Kent Athletics Club in Lewisham and trained to sprint and jump. I enjoy the individualism of the sport and the athletics family you gain. Athletics made me a somebody and allows me to travel the world.
When you’re not busy training, what can you be found doing? In my day job, l am a learning co-ordinator. I make sure our staff of over 1300+ receives the training and skills they need to meet the business objectives. I also support Prostate Cancer charities.
We know that you are a motivational speaker, particularly for young people. What’s your common message? Follow your dreams, don’t give up. Failure is part of the journey to success; learn from your failures and move forward. I have a very positive mindset and l bring that across during my talks.
Tell us about your cancer story, how has this impacted your life? I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021 at age 50. My cancer has significantly changed the way l think and how I live my life.I create more memories and appreciate the precious times with close friends and family. I know cancer doesn’t discriminate. But for some cancers or other health issues, the risk can be minimised with small lifestyle changes like reduced alcohol, good diet and exercise. A friend encouraged me to get tested and saved my life, and l want to do the same for others by raising awareness. This subject is a taboo amongst men, especially in the black community. But our risk is doubled, one in four compared to one in eight men in the UK. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men in the UK with figures comparable to breast cancer, yet the majority of men don’t know about its risks. I have been involved in media campaigns with PCUK and the NHS including a social media advert and TV news appearances.
Have you got any messages that you’d like to share with readers? I will direct readers to check their risk by using the Prostate Cancer UK 30-second risk checker This cancer is treatable if caught early. You are entitled to ask your GP for a PSA blood test if you are over 50 or 45 for black men.

community NOTICEBOARD Countdown to The ABBBAs
The Above & Beyond Bromley Business Awards (The ABBBAs) culminates in a glittering awards ceremony on Thursday 9th November at The Warren in Hayes. It aims to celebrate local businesses who go ‘above and beyond’ for their customers, their local residents or wider community. It was a tough decision for this year’s judges, who included Chandra Sharma, Aysha Best-Forbes, Kristel Valaydon, Lee Thomas and Gary Valentine, to whittle down nearly 300 entries into just 36 finalists. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors who got involved to make this inaugural event possible, the headline sponsor of which was Tapi Carpets & Floors; the judges who had the unenviable task of judging; and to all those people who submitted a nomination or voted for someone to win.
For more information and to look at entering next year’s awards visit www.the-abbbas.co.uk

SUPPORTING LOCAL AUTHORS… Annie Lyons is 49, a writer and creative writing teacher living in West Wickham. Her book, ‘The Air Raid Book Club’ was published by Headline on 11th July this year. Annie said: “Although this is my seventh published novel, it is my first complete historical fiction novel. I love history and am particularly interested in the Second World War. I also love books and reading and wanted to write a book set in a bookshop during that time, so it’s set in a small fictional town based on our very own Hayes!” ‘The Air Raid Book Club’ is available in hardback priced £20 from Beckenham Books, Waterstones and other local bookshops. It is also available as an eBook (£4.99), audiobook (prices vary) and Bromley libraries have copies available to borrow in all formats. For details see https://bit.ly/3Q9mmze

Bromley Old Town Hall officially launched recently, with a ribbon cutting ceremony from Bromley Mayor, Mike Botting, and a DJ set from Woody Cook, son of Bromley legend Fatboy Slim. The iconic Grade II listing has been brought back to life to offer a multi-use destination for Bromley residents, visitors and city goers. It is home to Bromley’s first and only boutique hotel, Brama; an all-day dining restaurant, Dorothy & Marshall; and a flexible office space, Clockwise.
The launch celebrates the end of the major renovation of Bromley Old Town Hall following its addition to the Heritage at Risk register in 2009, bringing a new lease of life to the much-loved historical building and surrounding area. Steeped in history, the Old Town Hall officially opened in 1907 and its re-opening signals a reinvigoration of the building’s spirit and a renewal of its purpose.

INSIGHTS FROM THE SUPER
Following on from my last article, I have continued to work on improving how we work with the community to provide a quality neighbourhood policing service. This has included meetings with Ward Panel Chairs for all the Wards in the borough; meeting the Petts Wood and Knoll Ward Panel to hear views directly from residents; and continued work with councillors. I have also accepted several invitations to attend public meetings called by councillors to hear the views of the various wards across the borough. As part of my plans, we will now be providing Leadership and Problem-Solving training to all Bromley neighbourhood officers to equip them with the skills they need to work with you to tackle community crime and anti-social behaviour problems. We have many skilled and dedicated officers who I intend to continue to provide professional development to, so that they can achieve this. We are now in the final stages of purchasing a new, fit for purpose speed gun using funding provided by the Safer Neighbourhood Board, along with courses for at

Winter calls for cosy reads and what could be more cosy than presenter Richard Osman’s cosy crime series; The Thursday Murder Club. It has gone on to be a bestselling series and let me tell you, once you meet Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron in the first book in their peaceful retirement village, you will love being reacquainted with them in each book. These four unlikely friends meet up once a week to investigate unsolved murders. But when a brutal killing takes place on their very doorstep, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case. This is a great murder mystery that kept me guessing right until the very end. A heartwarming, funny, clever read and the ending even had me welling up! This is so much more than your usual whodunnit and I would highly recommend it. Five stars!

I have also worked alongside Bromley Council to launch a joint initiative to better understand the reasons behind high street related crime and anti-social behaviour, based around several different locations across the borough. This will feed a larger piece of work to tackle Retail Crime where shoplifting, intimidation and assaults continue to affect our businesses and their workers. We understand the value that local business brings to communities, and want to ensure they are supported. Finally, I will be presenting at the Safer Neighbourhood Board Crime Summit on Saturday 14th November at the Civic Centre and will keep you updated on this. Why Did You Stay? Rebecca Humphries 06/07/23 Little Brown 416 £9.99
I listen to a lot of my non-fiction as audiobooks, especially when they’re memoirs and narrated by the person. I just feel it brings you the full 360 experience that way. Humphries has a natural dry wit which comes across in this book. If you’re a Strictly fan you probably all know the scandal of Humphries then boyfriend, kissing his dance partner. Humphries had an inkling something was going on, yet was called “crazy” when she confronted him about it. This is the story of why she stayed with him… and also why she left him. It’s very fast paced and even though it’s covering important and serious topics of gas lighting and toxic relationships it’s also a very easy read. 4 stars, especially for the humour and wit Humphries brings to the narration!

At Life In…Magazines we receive a lot of correspondence from local residents and we’ve noticed that there are a lot of talented poets out there! So, what better way to celebrate our borough’s talented creatives by highlighting just some of the wonderful poems we’ve received. It’s over to you…
Pearls before swine
Do not cast your pearls before swine, Not because they may trample them Beneath their cloven feet, Then turn and tear you into pieces, Thus deposing you from your lofty perch; But because as they grind them Into the mire of their ignorance, They may discover your pearls Are not pearls at all, they’re paste. Richard DJJ Bowdery
Remembering Diana
On a little island not far away When the soft breeze blows And the trees gently sway And a lark sings its song Up high in its nest It is there that Diana Was laid to her rest
Lying so close to her ancestral home She will not see another Sit on her throne The seasons will come And seasons will go The warm rays of summer The soft velvet snow And the pages of history Will have much to tell Of a beautiful princess Who was not treated well
She was happy at first A wife and a mother But the Prince she had chosen Gave his heart to another We know she wasn’t perfect But few of us are To most of her subjects She was their shining star
She reached out to many And showed that she cared She would have done so much more If her life had been spared So sleep pretty lady In your moss covered bed While your crown will be put On another one’s head
And the people will cheer The way that they do But they will know in their hearts It should have been you. Maureen Hillier

Reflections
There has never ever been a time quite like the present, of this I am sure! It is always good to spare part of one's life to think about what has gone before and ponder as to what is within our capabilities to promote for the foreseeable future. Standing still is not to be encouraged, although better even this than to slide backwards. And so, we must look to the future and imagine what can - and insofar as being within our several capabilities will - be done. No-one can predict precisely where and when things will happen, but we can use the wondrous imaginations, with which we have been endowed, to outline the likely outcome which can result following our individual actions. Whatever transpires as a consequence, this we must accept, for it is out of our hands. but it is certainly within our mortal capabilities to look ahead, to see the future as being something we ourselves can to a remarkable degree improve upon, and accept that whatever happens we are capable of welcoming it - for good or ill. David Alston
The Wonder Years!
If you are of a certain age, welcome to the wonder years. I wonder where my glasses are, and where I put the garden shears. Wonder where I left my phone. Wonder where I put my keys. But I’m having a wonderful time, and I still love hugging trees. My kids say, “Wonder where mum is?” But they can wonder all they like, because I might be at a gig, performing or on a hike. It’s time for bed I’m enjoying my wonder years, It’s time for bed. even though I sometimes wonder, Please let me fall asleep tonight. what day of the week it is, Had quite a few restless nights. and I often make a blunder. Leaves me tired. I wonder where I left my car, Maybe a shower now instead of in in the Morrison’s car park? morning will help. Will try it! I wonder why I went upstairs, Shower just left me feeling refreshed. for a while I’m in the dark. Won’t try that again. But - most of the time I wonder, Climb into bed. Climb out again how time flew to the wonder forgot to take my tablets. years, Need water to take my tablets. but then I think what the Downstairs to kitchen again. heck, Sit on edge of bed to take my tablets. cause I’m having fun Get into bed and get comfy. with my peers. Can’t reach the bedside lamp now. Turn over and turn off light. Geraldine Ann Ford Can’t get comfy again now. Pillow seems to have moved. Or is it the duvet? Turn on light to investigate. Duvet hanging over side too much. Make adjustments. Turn out light. Still can’t get comfy it’s because I’m on my back. Turn onto left side. Still can’t get comfy. Turn onto right side. Still not comfy. Toss and turn for nearly an hour. Oh please let me sleep! Count sheep, that never works. Still wide awake! What’s that? My alarm! When did I fall asleep? Time to get up! Home & Garden QUICK FIX HOME IDEAS (YOU CAN DO IN A DAY) Updating your curtains can instantly change the look and feel of a room. Choose curtains that complement your decor and add a pop of colour.
Changing out light fixtures can add a touch of style and sophistication to a room. Consider installing a statement pendant light or a modern chandelier.
New cushions can freshen up a sofa or bed and add colour or texture to a space. Mix and match different patterns and textures for a unique look.
Replacing the knobs or handles on your cabinets can give your kitchen or bathroom an instant update. Choose hardware that complements your decor and adds a touch of style.
Simply moving furniture around can change the look and feel of a room. Experiment with different configurations to find the one that works best for your space. Hanging artwork or photographs adds personality and interest to a room. Try creating a gallery wall with a mix of framed art and photographs.
7 AUTUMN JOBS FOR THE GARDEN 1. Leaf clearing: - Rake up fallen leaves from lawns, paths, and borders. - Compost or dispose of them appropriately.
2. Planting & transplanting: - Plant spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils, tulips and crocuses. - Transplant trees and shrubs, taking advantage of the cooler weather.
3. Pruning: - Prune back perennials that have finished flowering. - Cut back any dead or diseased growth from shrubs and trees.
4. Lawn care: - Continue mowing the lawn as necessary, but raise the cutting height. - Aerate the lawn to improve soil structure and drainage.
5. Mulching: - Apply a layer of organic mulch around plants to insulate roots and retain moisture. - Mulch also helps to suppress weeds.
Rugs can add colour, texture and warmth to a room. Choose one that adds a cosy feel to your space. Tidying up and organising clutter can instantly make a space look and feel more inviting. Consider investing in stylish storage solutions, like baskets or bins, to keep your space organised. A new coat of paint can dramatically change the look and feel of a room. Adding shelves can help organise your space and display ornaments, plants or books. Consider floating shelves which are relatively easy to install. A peel-and-stick backsplash is a quick way to add character to your kitchen or bathroom. Add some trim (for corners or coving/skirting)! This can give a room a more polished and finished look. You can buy pre-painted pieces for easier installation. A new welcome mat, a fresh coat of paint on the front door, and some potted plants can instantly update a home’s ‘kerb appeal’. Update your kitchen cupboards – a new lick of paint or special vinyl you can attach can give the space a more modern look. Replacing old, discoloured light switches and plug points with new ones can make a room look more polished A well-placed mirror can make a room feel larger and brighter. Consider decorative mirrors for added style.
6. Composting: - Turn the compost heap to aerate it and speed up the decomposition process. - Add the autumn leaves, spent plants and other garden waste.
7. Fruit & vegetable harvest: - Harvest any remaining crops like apples, pears, pumpkins and winter squashes and store them in a cool, dry place.

Cost of living crisis: value products revealed! After the launch of the Great Value recommendation last year, Which? now offers money-saving recommendations on more than 624 reviewed items across 91 product areas and counting. Meticulously selected by the company’s product experts, the brands and products were picked for delivering both an impressive performance and a budget-friendly price – at least 20% cheaper than the average cost among items that were tested in their respective categories.
Among the latest products to receive a Great Value recommendation was the Progress EK4549P air fryer. According to Which?, for anyone looking for an air fryer that won’t break the bank, this product excels, ticking the boxes for effective cooking, speed and energy efficiency and costs £80.
Also earning a coveted badge was Lidl Batts Real Mayonnaise. At 95p, it comes in a little cheaper than top-scoring Morrisons’ mayo, and much less than branded options. It impressed with its creamy, thick texture and appealing colour.
Those looking for an affordable and reliable microwave should consider the Currys Essentials CMB21. At £65, this product has easy-to-use functions and good heating and steaming capabilities.
In terms of the big-ticket items which can be expensive but unavoidable purchases when they need to be replaced, Which? awarded the Great
Beware the vampires
It is estimated that “vampire energy consumers” are costing homeowners up to £95 on their annual bills. Research from SaveMoneyCutCarbon, suggests the average amount of energy consumed by gadgets on standby or in a non-active state is between 9% and 16% of a home’s total energy bill. Therefore, the money-saving experts suggest the easiest way to stop wasting energy and cut your costs is to unplug devices from the wall and plug them back in just as you are about to use them. You could also consider purchasing an inexpensive extension power bar with an on/off switch so you can turn off several appliances at the same time.

Value badge to a £349 washing machine. The Hisense WFQY1014EVJM cleans well with an impressive rinse and is energy and water efficient. The Hisense received a score of 69%, one percentage point higher than the Samsung WW90T854DBX/S1 which costs £779, which is more than double the price. For an affordable and efficient washing powder, Aldi Almat Bio Washing Powder (£3.95/40 washes) received a Great Value recommendation. Working out at 10p per wash, this product performs well against stains and also keeps white clothes bright. In comparison, Ariel Original Powder works out at 23p per wash.
Anyone due a laptop upgrade could do much worse than looking at the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 14-inch (Gen 8). For £449, the laptop won a Great Value badge thanks to its good battery life and speedy processor, putting similarly priced laptops to shame with these features.
For campers, the Eurohike Snooze 200 Sleeping Bag is worth considering. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of more advanced and expensive sleeping bags, but for those who crave simplicity and only plan on camping in the summer months, the Snooze 200 is a solid choice at a bargain price of £13. Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services, said: “We test thousands of products and while Great Value winners may not always rank quite as highly as our Best Buy recommendations, they still perform strongly, making them fantastic choices for budget-conscious shoppers.”
LAUNDRY HACK REVEALED Did you know that the quickest, cheapest and most energy efficient way to dry your clothes inside is using a dehumidifier? According to John Elliott MBE from Ebac, studies show that drying loads using a dehumidifier is more than £1.30 cheaper per load than using an energy-hungry tumble drier without comprising the air quality and condition of the family home. This equates to a potential saving of £50 a month compared to using a tumble drier – a saving of more than £600 a year. November 2023 Life in... BROMLEY 31

Walkies warning: Protect your pooch from these poisonous plants Nature walks are a great way to enjoy the great outdoors with dogs, however, it's crucial to be aware there are several common plants that can be harmful to pets if ingested. Innocent-looking plants, such as bluebells, hogweed and azaleas can lead to a range of health issues, from gastrointestinal distress to severe heart problems. The experts at pet insurance comparison company, Quotezone. co.uk, are advising dog owners to familiarise themselves with poisonous plants, keep their dogs on the lead and supervise their pets when venturing into nature. The company’s Helen Rolph said: “Typical signs of poisoning for dogs include drooling, pale gums, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash and seizures. If you suspect that your dog has eaten a toxic plant, it is essential to contact a veterinarian or animal poisoning hotline immediately to aid their recovery.
“Every dog owner should read up on the range of toxic plants for dogs that can be commonly encountered in their area, some are quite surprising.” The team at Quotezone.co.uk has compiled a checklist of seven common plants that are poisonous to dogs:

HOW BRITS ARE STAYING YOUNGER FOR LONGER
Cosmetic surgery has evolved significantly over the past few years. We have stepped away from dramatic surgeries that create vast changes in our appearances, and instead are now opting for regenerative treatments that enhance our look using more natural substances. These regenerative treatments have become commonplace in the media; from the Kardashians who champion 'vampire facials' - also known as PRP - to procedures that utilise a patient's own stem cells, such as the Uvence treatment. Dr. Olivier Amar, leading cosmetic surgeon and CMO of Uvence, says that the prominent use of these regenerative treatments by high-profile celebrities shows how far the cosmetic arena has innovated in the past decade. Here, Dr Amar shares some of the leading regenerative treatments set to dominate the cosmetic industry this year:
• Express PRP: Also known as Platelet Rich Plasma, PRP is a natural and non-surgical treatment that uses the healing power of your own blood to regenerate your skin and encourage new collagen. Treatment boosts the skin’s radiance and luminosity, improves texture and reduces the visible signs of ageing. Where traditional PRP treatments involve many injections

into the face, Express PRP gives patients all the skinbrightening, rejuvenating benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma but in less time, with less redness and less downtime than other types of PRP, and with minimal discomfort.
• Uvence: An innovative and bespoke cosmetic treatment that utilises the patient's own cells to rejuvenate the skin - whether that be the face, neck, hands or décolletage – to improve the overall appearance of skin.
• Morpheus8: Having recently gained prominence after Judy Murray's impressive results, the Morpheus8 is a minimally invasive treatment that reduces the appearance of wrinkles, scarring and sagging skin. The addition of radiofrequency energy to the microneedling procedure helps to further stimulate the body’s natural collagen and healing processes revealing firmer, rejuvenated skin. The micro needle also stimulates collagen production without damaging the skin.

walk around the block or to a nearby park. Stand up and stretch: Take a break every hour and stand up to stretch your legs and arms. This can help improve circulation and reduce the risk of injury from prolonged sitting. Multi-task: Use the ad breaks while watching TV to do some quick exercises, such as squats or lunge. Alternatively, use a yoga mat to do some stretching while watching your favourite show. Cycle fit: Consider cycling or walking to work instead of driving or taking public transport. It also helps reduce your carbon footprint. Park further away: While heading to the shops or running an errand park your car further away from the entrance or take the long way to your destination. Be accountable: Find a friend or family member to exercise with, such as going for a walk or jog together. This can help you stay motivated and accountable to your exercise goals. How to stress less Stress is a natural part of life, but when it becomes chronic, it can take a toll on your mental and physical health. Fortunately, there are several strategies you can use to stress less and improve your overall well-being. Pay attention! • Look at what triggers your stress and make a list of the things that make you feel anxious or over whelmed. This can help you avoid or minimise these in the future. • Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation or yoga can help promote a sense of calm. Find one that works for you and incorporate it into your daily routine. • Lack of sleep can exacerbate stress and anxiety. Aim for between seven and eight hours of sleep per night and be consistent. • Exercise is a natural stress reliever that can help im prove your mood and reduce anxiety. Find a physi cal activity that you enjoy and try to do it regularly. • Taking care of yourself can help reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being. Make time for activ ities that you enjoy, such as reading, taking a bath or spending time with friends and family. • Poor time management can lead to feelings of stress and overwhelm. Use a planner or scheduling app to help you manage your time effectively and prioritise tasks. • Talking to friends or family members about your stress can help you feel less alone and more sup ported. You might also consider seeing a therapist or counsellor for additional support.

3G turning off soon Several major networks are planning on phasing out their 3G services by the end of 2023, meaning that businesses need to ensure their devices support 4G services or upgrade to avoid disruption. Vodafone and EE are the first two networks to close their 3G services, with both expected to switch their 3G network off completely by early 2024. This follows a government agreement with the four major networks – Vodafone, EE, O2 and Three – to sunset their 2G and 3G services by 2033. However, each provider is free to choose when they end those services before that date, meaning that businesses could find themselves without vital connectivity services if they haven’t already upgraded their devices.

NIGHT OF THE HAMSTER by CLIVE GIBBONS
Life at Clifton Village was pleasant enough, though not without a few regulations that tenants were required to abide by, or else face eviction. Perhaps the least loved, and certainly most reviled regulation on the books, especially amongst the juvenile population, was… "NO PETS". Just those two words, with no exceptions listed in the fine print. When mum signed on as Rental Agent, she thought it was too draconian, but rather than appeal to the landlord, Mr. Wise, she decided to unofficially limit the "NO PETS" stipulation to cats and dogs. One day, when I must have spent too much time watching TV in my room, mum asked a question that caught me off-guard– "Don't you want a pet, son?” A pet? Did *I* harbour some secret desire for a non-feline or non-canine companion? No, not really. My friend, Randy, had a caged white rat in his bedroom, named "Marsha". He seemed to enjoy having a caged white rat on the shelves next to his money collection, and it was cute, if you liked rats... which I didn't.
And so, with little fanfare and almost no reason to rejoice, "Scamper" the hamster arrived in our household. He came complete with an instruction booklet, "Getting To Know Your Hamster", which seemed to be nothing more than promotional material from the Hamster Marketing Board, if such an organisation existed. With his cage filled with wood shavings, a water bottle, food dispenser and, of course, an exercise wheel, little Scamper was all set for a life of futility and boredom in my bedroom. The following summer, Dad thought that Scamper had spent rather too long cooped up indoors, so for the good of his health, we moved his cage to a shady nook on our back patio. It must have been quite a revelation for Scamper to see birds, bees, squirrels, toads and other outdoor creatures wandering near his domicile, quite apart from all the fresh air and sunshine. Fortunately, there were few cats roaming about.
My mind began to twirl, because I knew that whenever mum asked me a "Don't you want" question, she expected a reply to the affirmative, and I really hated to disappoint her. It was true that on our regular visits to the Towers department store in Aldershot, my favourite spot to hang out was in the pet department. It was like a miniature zoo, with all manner of household pets, including lizards, small monkeys and even a coatimundi, but just because I liked visiting those animals didn't mean I wanted to live with one of them.
One morning, I went outside to check on him and found the door of his cage dislodged. No sign of Scamper. Perhaps some marauding nocturnal carnivore had taken him. My parents were resigned to his fate, but I cradled a glimmer of hope, so a few pieces of lettuce were arranged next to his cage, and the door left open, just in case he somehow found his way back.
"How about a hamster?" she suggested, cheerfully, "I hear they're very popular with children."
"Scamper's back home, son. I don't know how, but he's back."
Before I could voice my opinion on hamster ownership, she spoke again, "And your father thinks it would be an ideal pet for you. Cute and easy to care for. They're on sale at Towers!"
I rushed outside to see him curled up, snoozing in his nest of wood shavings. He must have had one hell of a story to tell, bless his twitchy whiskers...
I smiled at my mother and said with every ounce of mock enthusiasm I could muster, "Gee, that's great, mum! Really cool!"

A Final Thought…

Are smart devices making us less smart? by Zachary Ikhelef
My name is Zachary and as part of my work experience with Life In…Magazines, I was given the task to write about my thoughts on a certain topic. I am very lucky to have this chance and I would like to use this opportunity to discuss my thoughts on the common phenomenon of smart devices and whether they are a piece of good fortune or a mind-numbing slab of metal that suck away at your life through apps like Instagram and Tiktok. The introduction of the iPhone in 2007 stunned the world with its revolutionary features including a sleek design, a multitouch user interface and the ability to surf the internet via its unique Safari browser at the tips of our fingers. Apple quickly went on to sell nearly two million phones in 2007, creating a revenue of $630 million, making it the most popular phone brand in the world. Sorry Blackberry, your time to shine was over a long time ago! But are these devices a positive addition to our lives? It’s definitely something to consider. Ask yourself, “What does my phone do for me?” or “Is spending time on my phone worth my time?” I think most people would begin to reconsider their lives. According to Statista, people in the UK spend a total of four hours and 14 minutes a day on their phones - doing what I ask? And, according to the app monitoring firm App Annie, people are spending a third of their waking time on mobile apps. But if scrolling aimlessly floats your boat, then by all means carry on doing so. However, being engrossed on your smart phone all day every day will have detrimental effects on your development, especially if you’re a child without a fully developed brain. The American Academy of Paediatrics suggest that a child under the age of 18 months should not be exposed to any sort of screen time and children aged between two and five years should only be spending one hour a day on screens. All I can say is that I’m grateful that I’m not one of those kids who spends their life glued to their iPads and throws a demonic tantrum when it gets

taken away - good luck to you parents! Having said that, during the Covid-19 pandemic when we were all cast away into our homes, an absence of technology would have caused further damage. We can all agree that smart devices have made communication more convenient and without them lockdown would have been insufferable with the inability to see our family members, even if it was on the weekly Zoom quizzes. Without smart devices, I wouldn’t have been able to complete my school work, easily keep in touch with my friends or complete my daily Joe Wicks workout – I’m joking, I think we would’ve survived without that! Smart devices themselves don’t make us less smart. However, it’s our constant usage and dependence that are influencing our intelligence. Ultimately, we must strike a balance by using our devices to enhance our lives rather than allowing them to replace critical thinking. I don’t want to completely condemn the creation of smart devices as I full well know that they are able to do amazing things that help us in our everyday lives such as managing home features like lighting and security cameras, from our phones. Smart devices have woven themselves into every fabric of our lives and are addictive companions that connect us, enlighten us and somewhat destroy us. “Are smart devices making us less smart?” is the question that the world must answer.
