Chapter & Verse

In our new regular book review column, local resident Zoe Hill (see @zoelovesbooks_ on Instagram), gives us the lowdown on what she’s reading – and more importantly, if it’s worth picking up!

I’ve loved books and reading as far back as I can remember. My Dad was a very keen reader and I always remember him with a book in hand. He definitely influenced my love of reading and one of my happiest childhood memories was going to our local library. Instagram has a dedicated hashtag to all things books which is #bookstagram - the friendliest little corner of the internet and something I get huge pleasure out of. It’s a great community of people who read and share reviews and I can be found on there at @zoelovesbooks_ I hope to encourage as many people as possible to find the pleasure in reading and so I am extremely excited to be bringing my book reviews to Life In...Magazines.

Title: Go As A River

Author: Shelley Read

Published: 13/04/2023

Publisher: Doubleday

No of pages: 320

RRP: £16.99

On a cool autumn day in 1948, Victoria Nash delivers late-season peaches from her family's farm set amid the wild beauty of Colorado. As she heads into her village, a dishevelled stranger stops to ask her the way. How she chooses to answer will unknowingly alter the course of both their young lives forever.

Go As A River is Read’s debut novel, and it is truly stunning. If you’ve read and loved Where the Crawdads Sing, this book will transport you in just the same way; the writing is so descriptive that you can almost taste the juicy peaches. Victoria is such a memorable and well written character, you will be immersed in her story and unable to put the book down. Utterly heartbreaking at times, this is a coming of age story, which covers themes of grief, loneliness, love, loss, hope and survival. This is a book which will stay with you long after you’ve finished the last page.

Go As A River is historical fiction as its finest, a truly unforgettable book. An easy 5 stars.

Popped in to see Heather (left) and Sue at Orpington’s Time For Flowers, sponsors of the Local Hero articles. Enjoyed a visit from Lee Thomas in the office. The strike at Biggin Hill

The RAF opened their station at Biggin Hill in 1917. It remained open after the war. In 1919 there were 500 men of the Wireless Experimental station stationed at South Camp. The living conditions at that time were appalling; most sleeping in tents in a sea of mud. The dining hall, too, was a leaky canvas hangar equally muddy and the food, prepared in an open, rusty shed, was almost inedible.

In spite of many complaints to the authorities nothing changed. After a particularly unpalatable meal in January 1919 a meeting was held and the men voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action. The ‘Red Flag’ was sung, but calls for more radical actions such as a march down Piccadilly smashing windows en route were refused.

The next morning no one turned out for duty. An orderly, wanting to know what was happening, was refused entry to the dining hall by a sergeant and two men refusing to recognise his authority. The men removed magnetos from all vehicles in the camp, including those belonging to civilian contractors and when men from the 141 Squadron in North Camp refused to intervene, the strike committee had achieved complete control. A deputation was sent to the Commanding Officer, Colonel Blanchy (the new RAF ranks had not been fully introduced) and presented the following demands:

1. No man to be victimised.

2. Unless we receive a satisfactory answer from the Commandant we will put our case before Lord Weir, i.e. our deputation will proceed to his quarters.

(a) The men state that when they go "sick" the Medical Officer says that their complaints are due to the disgraceful conditions of the camp food and sanitary arrangements.

(b) Names of the men who can bear witness to the above statement can be supplied if necessary.

(c) We demand that Major __ shall be dismissed from this unit.

(d) Leave to be carried on in the normal way.

(e) The men demand that they leave the camp until it is put into a habitable condition by the civilian employees.

(f) Temporary release of those men who have

jobs waiting and those who want to get jobs pending discharge. While the men are at home demobilisations must continue, and the men be advised by letter or telegram.

(g) Abolition of work on Saturday afternoons and Sundays.

(h) Restrictions placed on Y.M.C.A. to be removed and prices in canteen to be lowered.

(i) Efficient transport to be provided for officers, NCOs and men.

3. Grievances.

Sanitary:

(a) Wash-house - only 5 basins for 500 men.

(b) Wet feet - no gum boots issued.

(c) Dirty and leaking huts.

(d) NO BATHS.

(e) Inefficient latrines.

Food:

(a) Shortages.

(b) Badly cooked.

(c) Dirty cook-house staff.

(d) Dining Hall in a disgraceful condition.

(e) Fully trained cooks should be substituted for present inefficient youths.

THESE DEMANDS TO BE CONCEDED BY NOON TODAY.

Clearly Blanchy thought they had a case and agreed to take the delegation to the Area HQ at Covent Garden! The men agreed, and the magnetos were replaced in a sufficient number of vehicles to transport the delegation. Meanwhile the rest of the camp remained on strike. The delegation resulted in an inspection of the camp by the area second in command. The outcome: the whole camp was immediately sent on leave for ten days, during which time conditions were drastically improved and the other demands largely conceded. When the strike ended there was no victimisation. This limited but solid struggle had met with success.1

The Green Mile

On Saturday 25th June, we're bringing the community together and wearing Green for CASPA, a small, local Bromley charity for autistic young people and their families. Our course is set out for one mile around Norman Park and the starting point will be the Hayes Lane Car Park end. You can run, walk, jump, hop, skip or even tie yourself together with someone else. It's a fun event for the whole family to come together. Dogs can come too (must be on a lead and free of charge) and buggies/pushchairs. Everyone will receive a winner’s medal.

If you’re a local business owner or community group looking for new ways to broaden your audience and your customer base, consider taking part in BizComm on Thursday 6th July from 7pm- 9.15pm at the Bromley Court Hotel. Organised by The Chartwell Charities, the event will feature guest speakers, rotational networking and is being held to raise money for Mary How Trust, Freddie Farmer Foundation and the Chartwell Cancer Trust.

Tickets cost £20 from bit.ly/bizcomm23. Call Jo on 01959 570322 or email jo@chartwellcancertrust.co.uk for more information.

Once you have signed up, we would then love you to create a fundraising page and ask for sponsorship for your one mile. All children under 16 must have a parent/guardian with them.

SUPPORTING LOCAL AUTHORS…

For 15 years Jo Clegg has worked in TV and radio on comedy shows for the BBC and Channel 4. Now she writes books, and scripts for kids' animation including BAFTA and Emmy-award winning Hey Duggee. Her first novel, The Summer Holiday (published by Orion) was joined by a second last summer: Here Comes The Sun - a warm, nurturing, optimistic novel set in Orpington about community, family and finding your way back after a loss.

Why did you decide to write a book and how was the experience?

I'd been writing scripts for years but wanted to see if it would be a deeper emotional experience, which it was.

Who is your latest book aimed at?

Daughters, mothers... and anyone who knows one!

Are there any more books in the pipeline?

Definitely. I have an idea about a family set in the 1970s but it will be a while before it sees the light of day.

How much is your book and where is it available for people to buy? It's currently £7 on Amazon or can be ordered through any book shop.

Linda Regan is both an actress and crime novelist, with nine novels published to date. They are all police procedural, and feature Detective Inspector Paul Banham and his Sergeant Alison Grainger, who have an on-off romance and relationship. Linda lives in Bromley and is also a regular columnist of Life In…Magazines.

What’s your latest novel, The Burning Question, about?

I have nine crime novels published to date. They are all police procedural, and feature Detective Inspector Paul Banham and his Sergeant Alison Grainger. These two also have an on-off romance and relationship.

Who is your latest book aimed at?

My latest book, The Burning Question, is aimed at all crime readers as well as anyone who wants a good read. Are there any more books in the pipeline?

Yes, there is another book coming out later this year or early next year.

How much is your book and where is it available for people to buy? My books are available on Amazon and can be ordered from all good bookshops.

Regeneration plan for Crystal Palace Park

Crystal Palace Park will reap the rewards of funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund; £300k has been awarded to proceed with the £5m lottery grant application that will focus on the restoration of the much-loved dinosaurs and their landscape at the park. The Lower Paxton Axis of the park and Penge Entrance will also be improved, a new dinosaur themed playground will be developed near the existing popular park café, and a replacement information centre will be provided for visitors and residents to find out about the park and its illustrious history, which will also be occupied by the Crystal Palace Park Trust. Work is expected to be completed by this September.

Bill LoSasso, Chief Executive from Crystal Palace Park Trust said: “This needed investment will help preserve some of the Park’s most beloved heritage and create new ways to engage with and learn about the Park’s rich history.  We are grateful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for helping to preserve the park’s past while ensuring that its future is equally inspiring.”

Organised by local resident, Steve Sangster, chair of The Knoll Residents Association and local drone operator, the event saw attendees wear coloured ponchos and organised into a crown shape so that Stephen’s drone could capture the image. Nature-friendly Bromley

A total of 11 key locations around the borough will soon become part of the Nature Friendly Verges initiative, where nature is being put back in the driving seat. Bromley Council’s new pilot will see carefully selected locations receiving only one annual cut, either in September or October, and then these will be left to grow throughout the rest of the year with other maintenance activities continuing.

Running for a two-year period, the council’s greenspace management contractor, idverde, will be carefully managing the sites, with expected important improvements in biodiversity and increased natural carbon storage. The grass verges will act as wildlife corridors connecting habitats and greenspaces, a process that is likely to take two growing seasons to develop. These wildflower verges will help increase floral diversity and increase pollinator habitats, which is good news for bees, butterflies, and invertebrates. The chosen sites are Addington Road (West Wickham); Beadon Road (Bromley Town); Copers Cope Road (Beckenham Town & Copers Cope); Court Road (Orpington); Downs Hill/Ravensbourne Avenue (Shortlands and Park Langley/Bromley Town/Beckenham & Copes Cope); Northfield Avenue (St. Mary Cray); Ormonde Avenue (Farnborough and Crofton); Pickhurst Lane and Pickhurst Mead (West Wickham); Rangefield Road Footpath (Plaistow); River Pool Walk (Penge and Cator); and Warren Road (Chelsfield).

It would have been hard to finish my term of office as your Mayor of Bromley with an event more momentous, important and spectacular than the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

It has been quite the year, but it feels perfectly fitting to me that my tenure as Mayor came to an end by spending the bank holiday weekend joining as many residents as possible at street parties across the borough. What an honour both to be able to read the King’s message to our brilliant residents and to be so warmly welcomed at so many of your fantastic street parties. Thank you, you did Bromley proud again. I managed to fit in one final trip to Bromley FC, who have become great friends over the last year, to support their dementia-friendly afternoon, which is a fantastic initiative. I also visited the Orpington Dementia Club for an early coronation celebration. There was also time for one last charity event, the 4-mile Whittington Walk. Held on London Marathon weekend, but a little less taxing, this involved a number of London Mayors walking from the Whittington Hospital to Islington Town Hall. Money raised from that event went towards the more than £41,000 raised for Everybreath and the Bromley Care Leavers Come Dine With Us project over the course of the year. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you again to everyone who

supported my charities, and for the warmth and welcome you have shown me during my year as Mayor. It has been the honour of my lifetime, which I will never forget. I am eager to see what the new Mayor, Cllr Mike Botting, does with his year.

Welcome from the new Mayor of Bromley

It is the greatest honour to be named Mayor of Bromley, one that I embrace with dignity, integrity and enthusiasm. I have lived in Bromley for 44 years and brought up four wonderful children here. My year as Mayor offers me another way to give something back to the community that has given me so much. I really want to be a Mayor for the entire Borough, so I will spend the next year visiting residents in every corner of Bromley. I want to support absolutely everyone from every walk of life throughout our fantastic community, from the borough’s youngest to its eldest, from volunteers to businesses. If you would like me to attend an event of any sort, please do get in touch through the Mayor’s Office. I look forward to meeting you over the course of the year.

I have no idea if the sun will be shining when you read this, I know it should be, but as I write a month ahead, one never knows, and you certainly can’t rely on weather people to tell you.

I mean I’m sure you all remember Michael Fish and his major faux pas. Well, I am about to tell you about my month’s major faux pas. It started when I was on my way home from a book signing event. The management very kindly sent me home in one of their cars. The car journey was fine until we got near my road. As we turned into the main road, where I live, we pulled up sharply in a tailback of stationary traffic. I leaned out my window to see what was happening, and realizing, in horror, there was a large goose trotting down the middle of the road in the middle of traffic chaos. I, immediately jumped out of the car to rush to its aid. I live next to a farm, and I knew this goose and all his family. How he had got loose I had no idea. I only knew I had to save his life. I grabbed my dog’s towel, as I intended throwing it over the goose’s head and carrying this fellow back to his home. Geese bites are pretty painful, so I was wanting to avoid one. I knew it would be best to throw a towel over the goose rather than ask it not to bite me. It was, understandably, in a state of great panic. Hooting cars don’t help. I shouted at the cars to pipe down, then one of them shouted ‘Sunday Lunch,’ and I shouted something, reasonably rude, back, (I am a vegetarian),and carried on running after the goose.

The goose ran in the opposite direction. The car jam was getting heavier and I was running in between the cars, in seven inch stiletto heeled shoes, diving and ducking, (please pardon the pun), desperate to save the panic stricken feathered fellow. Then something awful happened.

The elastic in my bright turquoise knickers snapped, stopping me in my tracks as my knickers speedily slid to my ankles. The goose ran down a side road, away from the hooting traffic, and I was left standing in the middle of the road hearing the laughter and horn hooting which was now aimed at me. My embarrassment of losing my knickers in a main road, (On a windy night too), in front of 30-odd cars was overridden by my sadness at what had happened to the goose, as I now had lost sight of him.

However, this story has a happy ending. The next morning, I looked out my window (which looks over the farm) and saw he was back with his family, all huddled together, and happy. Job done, I thought as I headed for the bus stop into town and to the haberdashery market stall, to purchase a reel of thick knicker elastic.

Behind the Badge

INSIGHTS FROM THE SUPER

I am very pleased to have been appointed as the Neighbourhood Policing Superintendent for Bromley Borough. I look forward to working together to serve the communities of Bromley. I have served as a police officer for 17 years now in a variety of roles. I previously worked in Lambeth and Croydon Boroughs in a wide variety of local policing and neighbourhood roles before moving to the Met’s Territorial Support Group. I then left the Met for five years to work in the City of London Police, before returning as a Superintendent in the Met on the Specialist Firearms Command. However, after just over a year in that role I missed being involved in local neighbourhood policing and was thrilled to secure a transfer to my new role in Bromley.

I was born at PRUH (Farnborough Hospital back then) and lived my early years here, so I feel a connection to Bromley and am motivated to do whatever I can to deal with crime and anti-social behaviour that negatively affect the area. I am aware that following the Baroness Casey Report, we have a lot of work to do to regain and rebuild the trust of all our communities, and this will form a central focus.

I aim to do this through effectively targeting the problems that most affect our communities, aiming to sustainably solve those problems whilst maintaining the very highest of standards to meet the Commissioner’s objectives of More Trust, Less Crime and High Standards.

I have been invited by Life In…Magazines to submit a regular article for Life In Bromley and I hope to be able to update you on the progress of these objectives and be able to demonstrate some positive examples of this approach in the coming months. I look forward to working with you all.

5 Minutes With...

ERPT Superintendent Angie Gentry

Superintendent Angela Gentry is responsible for Bromley borough’s ERPT (Emergency Response Policing Team), where she oversees a team of approximately 560 officers. Angela is based at Bromley Police Station and lives in Chessington with her husband, two teenage children and dog, Riley, a miniature schnauzer. We caught up with Angela to find out the challenges a Superintendent faces and what she loves about her job…

What made you want to join the police?

I’ve wanted to join since I was seven years old after doing a project on the police at school. I did work experience at Kingston Police station when I was 15, but I was told I was probably too shy for the police! I’d always wanted to help people and was looking for a job that was different. I also liked the idea that it would push and test me as a person, so I joined the force in 1994 age 20.

You’re an ERPT Superintendent - what does that mean for the uninitiated and what does your role encompass?

ERPT stands for Emergency Response Policing Team which means we answer and respond to the 999 and 101 calls. It entails overseeing approximately 560 officers across Sutton, Croydon and Bromley areas who work 24/7 dealing with the emergency calls and what we call volume crime, i.e. criminal damage, theft and assault (up to ABH - Actual Body Harm). Around 172 of those officers are in the Bromley borough specifically. Although much of my role is administrative, it also involves supporting officers in their daily role and ensuring we have enough police coverage. We currently have a lot of new officers joining, which is a huge responsibility. Assault also impacts on our officers in terms of morale and their wellbeing; we probably get an average of five to ten officers assaulted in a 24-hour period. I take on the role of a Blue Light Champion as much of my job is working with officers and supporting their mental health.

What does a typical day look like, if there is such a thing?

The joy of my job is that there’s not a typical day. I have my fun day when I get out and drive the van twice a month if I can. It’s a role that offers a lot of exposure and you never know what you’re going to deal with. It also reminds you what policing is about and what’s happening locally, which is really helpful for me in my decision making and understanding the challenges our officers face. Getting out and meeting the team is very useful in breaking down the barriers of communication; I can’t fix it if I don’t know about it. I am trying to emulate the person that I would have wanted as a Superintendent when I was climbing

the ranks as a PC for eight years – someone who was approachable and on my side. My time is also spent in meetings with colleagues about resource planning, with mental health teams, partners and advisory groups. Other tasks include parades, reading incident reports, dealing with officers that are the subject of hate crime, supporting females in the job, flexible working policies etc.

How are community relationships with the police being strengthened?

We offer ‘Ride Alongs’ for residents to join us and gain an insight into our roles. We also run a ‘Walk and Talk’ initiative for females who may not feel safe in the community. On the back of the Baroness Casey Review*, Bromley has a dedicated Superintendent, which I think is key to driving a lot of local activity – someone who can speak to community partners, oversee policing responses and improving contact with dedicated ward officers. The most important thing I want from the community is for them to feel they can report things and that they will be given the attention they deserve, because then the trust will grow. That’s where this magazine is so powerful because it also reaches people that don’t always have the online presence, which is actually more common than we realise.

What’s the best thing about working in the borough?

Bromley has a great friendliness and strong community spirit, which means that people care, which is great to see. We’re largely supported and to us that’s really important in driving improvement on a local scale.

What do you like to do to relax?

Reading and walking the dog.

What does community mean to you?

Communities are essential to the future of our health and wealth, we don’t police alone. Working on the principle that the public are the police, and the police are the public, we must be one - it’s essential.

Local Heroes...

(Because not all heroes wear capes)

Chris Tuck

Angela Hulm describes Chris Tuck as ‘a strong, inspiring fitness instructor and survivor of abuse campaigner’ and has nominated her as a local hero. Angela says “Chris came to talk to students at Langley Park School for Girls about her role with survivors of abuse. Chris's example of not being defined by her past and using education to be independent saw her qualify in accounts, earn enough to buy her own home and manage health challenges. Her powerful message to the girls is that they are worthy.”

Chris, you’ve faced some struggles from your past but have turned this into a positive in helping others. Can you tell us more about this?

I grew up in the borough and now live in West Wickham. Due to my chaotic, dysfunctional and abusive childhood I didn’t do very well at school. I later attended a catering college in London and that’s when I fell in love with accountancy. I spent the next ten years training and I qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant in 1997. I had my first child in 1998 and this resulted in me experiencing a period of poor mental health due to the trauma from the adverse childhood experiences I had encountered coming to the fore. In 2003 I had my second child and I realised that I needed to change my life in order to be both mentally and physically strong and well. For the last 20 years I have retrained as a trauma informed health, wellness and fitness coach and have used my experiences to set up the charity Survivors Of Abuse. I have created my own psychoeducational eight-week programme that empowers adult victims and survivors to recover from the trauma of their abuse holistically.

How did you become a survivor of abuse campaigner?

Unfortunately society does not understand or recognise how prevalent childhood abuse is and how impactful it can be in all areas of a victim’s/survivor’s life. I combine my lived-experiences and my knowledge to raise awareness and create positive change at a government, organisational, individual and societal level. I have written three books, co-host a weekly podcast and speak publicly on the subject matter via TV, radio and in print.

What’s the most rewarding aspect about what you do?

I have given myself a voice and now I endeavour to empower others to use theirs for the greater good.

What does a typical working day look like?

There is no typical working day to be honest. Throughout my week I teach 12 fitness classes for pre- and postmenopausal women, both active classes and Pilates. I am currently working with professional bodies, a university and the government to make the positive changes needed to make the world a safer place for children NOT to be abused and to hold those who abuse accountable.

What does community mean to you?

It means a sense of belonging, feeling safe and trusting. Often this is destroyed for individuals who have suffered any form of childhood abuse. So through my charity and my work I endeavour to raise awareness and empower people to live a life that they deserve. After an individual has been through my programme they are offered continued support.

What do you most enjoy about living in the Bromley borough?

Within an hour I can be in London for work; within 90 minutes I can be by the sea or within 10 minutes I can be in the countryside to walk my dog. As part of the IICSA Bench Legacy Project I have been successful in getting a bench placed in Churchfield’s Recreation Ground in Beckenham. This will be installed soon and means a lot to me personally. The Bench legacy was about leaving a tangible physical legacy where society can find out more about the Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse by clicking on the QR code.

What message would you like to give people reading this?

If you have suffered abuse of any kind and you are impacted by it, please do not suffer in silence. There are many organisations that can help you with you with what you have been through, going through and your recovery.

GREAT IDEAS TO SPOIL DAD THIS FATHER’S DAY

With Father’s Day almost upon us (Sunday 18th June), here are some novel ideas on gifts and experiences to make dad’s day as special as it can be…

1. Treat dad to a delicious meal at his favourite restaurant or somewhere new. Have you tried our local advertisers Shampan for Indian cuisine, The Landing Biggin Hill for Afternoon Tea, The Bank for Mediterranean delights or Xenia for Japanese gastronomy?

2. If dad is an avid golfer, take him out for a round of golf at a beautiful course. You could also rent a golf cart and make a day of it.

3. Help him unwind and de-stress with a relaxing spa day. You could book a massage, a facial or a mani-pedi for him to enjoy.

4. Head to Churchill Theatre Bromley to take in a great show – from comedy and thrillers, to musicals and magic, there is something for all tastes. See churchilltheatre.co.uk

5. Put together a gift basket filled with all of his favourite treats and goodies including snacks, drinks or maybe a personalised gift or two. Or maybe try your luck at winning the hamper from Bumbles & Boo (see below).

Pamper with a hamper!

Bumbles & Boo offers beautiful gift hampers starting from £22.95 and packed full of gift ideas - from fabulous luxuries to everyday essentials. All hampers are hand-picked and packed in the UK, beautifully presented and filled with items to suit all tastes. Life In…Magazines has teamed up with Bumbles & Boo, a UK independent company founded by two mum friends, to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a Father’s Day hamper. For the chance to win, answer this question: What hampers do Bumbles & Boo offer? (A) Baby Shower (B) New Parents (C) Both A and B. Email your answer, name, address and telephone number to hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk. For more information visit www.bumblesandboo.com

6. Plan a day out for dad where he hasn’t been before. It will give him the chance to relax and spend quality time with you! We can recommend RAF Biggin Hill Museum and Chapel!

7. Create a personalised photo album filled with memories! This is a thoughtful and sentimental gift that he'll cherish for years to come.

8. If dad is into gadgets and technology, surprise him with a new device or accessory that he's had his eye on. Whether it's a new phone, tablet or smartwatch, he'll love the upgrade. And if his gadget needs an MOT or repair, give James at Our Technician a bell. Call 020 8616 0244 or email info@ourtech.co.uk

9. Commission a piece of jewellery for something you’ll know he’ll love – a bracelet, ring or neck chain perhaps? Shop local with Nicholas Foreman Jewellerynickforemanjewellery.co.uk or call 07753-611769.

10. Have a relaxing movie day and head to your nearest cinema to treat dad to a film – or opt for movie night at home – don’t forget the popcorn!

11. If dad works from home, book him some office space for a change of scenery! Try Devonshire House or Newman Flexible Workspace – they have both co-working and private offices to rent. See newmanbusinesscentre.co.uk and devonshirehse.co.uk

EASY WAYS TO BRING SPRING INTO YOUR HOME

* Add a burst of fresh colour with a selection of new accessories. Pops of colour can bring a whole new energy to a space, whether it’s a set of colourful kitchen accessories or new cushions in the sitting room.

* Brighter days draw attention to tired paintwork. Refresh your woodwork in your home to make the room feel instantly updated and ‘clean.’ It might seem an unnecessary job, but even refreshing the ceiling can dramatically enhance the light levels in a space.

* Bring spring colouring new life into your home with cut flowers. For an eclectic, country feel, pick

A 9-step plan to the perfect garden

up bud and single-stem vases and bottles from charity shops.

* Tackle that one big ‘problem area’ with a declutter for a great way to feel like you’re winning at life! Invest in storage baskets or shelving that will enable you to organise an area that bugs you to instantly feel a weight off your shoulders.

* Swapping out your bedding for a new set is one of the very best ways to embrace spring in the bedroom. There’s nothing better than beautiful soft new sheets to aid a better night’s sleep. Try a light linen set for a relaxed, bohemian vibe, with no ironing required!

Britain's favourite flowers

1. Start by determining the style you want for your garden, such as a cottage garden, a formal garden or a modern garden. This will help guide your plant and design choices.

2. Analyse the site where you want to create your garden. Look at the soil type, drainage and light levels to determine which plants will thrive in your space.

3. Use your garden style and site analysis to create a garden plan. This should include the layout of your garden, the types of plants you want to use and any hardscaping features, such as paths or garden beds.

4. Prepare the soil for planting by removing any debris and adding organic matter, such as compost or manure, to improve soil quality and drainage.

5. Choose plants that are well-suited to your garden's conditions, such as sunloving plants for sunny areas and shade-loving plants for shady areas. Consider using a mix of perennials, annuals and shrubs for a variety of colours and textures.

6. Space plants appropriately to allow for growth and add support structures, such as trellises or stakes, for taller plants.

7. Regularly maintain your garden by watering, fertilising and pruning as needed. This will help keep your plants healthy and promote growth.

8. Add hardscaping features such as paths or garden beds, to add visual interest and structure to your garden.

9. Sit back and enjoy your garden! Use it as a place to relax and unwind, entertain guests, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature.

Ashridge Trees generated a comprehensive list of 100 flowers, analysing 12 months of search volume statistics to discover the "most searched for" flowers. The shortlist was then presented to a nationallyrepresentative survey group of 1,000 participants. Results were generated by crossing search volume results against public opinion poll to find Britain’s favourite flowers, which are:

Travel

How to really enjoy your holiday

Taking time out is a great way to relax, explore new places and create memories. Trouble is, most of us don’t get to do it very often, so when we do, it’s important to make the most of it. Here’s how!

• Plan ahead: Research the destination you are travelling to, plan your itinerary and make sure to book any activities or attractions in advance. This will help you make the most of your time and avoid missing out on anything.

• Be flexible: While it's important to plan ahead, it's also important to be flexible and open to changes. Sometimes the best experiences can come from unexpected adventures.

• Unplug: Consider taking a break from technology during your holiday to fully disconnect and immerse yourself in the experience. This will help you stay present and enjoy the moment.

• Try local cuisine: A big part of any holiday experience

Is it the end for tiny toiletries?

Plans to introduce new CT X-Ray technology at UK airports means passengers will no longer be limited to carrying 100mls of liquids in their hand luggage, with a deadline of June 2024 set by the UK government for older generation scanners to be replaced with newer versions.

However, some UK airports, such as Teeside International Airport and London City Airport, have already installed the state-of-the-art bag and body scanners, allowing travellers to take up to two litres of liquids in their hand luggage and keep electronics in their bags.

To help savvy travellers avoid confusion, Airport Parking and Hotels (APH.com) has released a comprehensive table comparing hand luggage rules currently in place across 15 major UK airports. For details see www.aph.com/liquidlimits

is trying the local food. Be adventurous and try new dishes and cuisines to get a taste of the local culture.

• Take time to relax: Don't feel like you have to fill every moment of your holiday with activities. Take some time to relax and enjoy your surroundings, whether that's by the pool, at the beach or in a park.

• Get off the beaten path: Explore beyond the typical tourist areas and discover hidden gems in your destination. This can be a great way to experience the local culture and create unique memories.

• Connect with locals: Strike up a conversation at a cafe or take a local tour. This can help you learn more about the destination and create a more meaningful experience.

• Create memories: Take photos, keep a travel journal or buy souvenirs to help capture and remember your holiday experience. This can be a great way to look back and reminisce on your trip.

Poland takes the crown

New research has discovered the top ten cheapest European capitals for a city break, with Warsaw in Poland taking the top spot.

Data Analysts at Gambling ‘N Go analysed the average cost of several factors in each capital city in Europe, including flights from any London airport, a night’s stay in a hotel, and a three-course meal for two in a mid-range restaurant. The cost of each factor was added up to determine the ranking.

Taking the crown (at the time of writing) for the cheapest European capital for a city break is Warsaw, Poland, with a total price of £161.67. This includes a three-course meal for two at an average of £37.52, while a return ticket will set you back £88.89.

In second place is Spain’s capital, Madrid, on a total of £184.80, where a night’s stay in a hotel costs an average of £35.91. In third place was Sofia, Bulgaria, which has a total of £200.58 – and where a beer will cost an average of just £1.81.

Cities making up the rest of the top ten for cheapest cities included Riga, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Bucharest and Rome. On the opposite end of the scale, Vaduz, Liechtenstein, was found to be the most expensive capital for a city break with a total of £1,021.65.

Tried & tested: Vida de la Mariposa Coaching

Zeenat Noorani, founder and owner of Vida de la Mariposa Coaching, knows how to juggle life – and seems to do it effortlessly. Not only does she run her own company, she’s also a radio presenter, one half of the Bromley Buzz team, co-founder of Let's Talk Better and co-founder of The People Skills Course - and that’s just to name a few! We decided to experience a coaching session to see how we can better juggle our work/life balance (and get an insight into how Zeenat does it herself!)

What? Zeenat offers bespoke coaching programmes across a range of areas – from mindset and growth coaching to mental health and wellbeing. We wanted to find out how to reaffirm what our aims and goals are in life – and to stop the overwhelm when it happens.

How? Zeenat educated us about the power of affirmations. We discovered that first thing in the morning and last thing

How to deal with daily stressors

Wouldn’t it be great to have simple daily activities we could do to make ourselves feel good? Things we could do before an intense business meeting or at the end of a stressful day. The more regularly we practise calming activities like the ones below, the more of a lasting positive impact they have on our mental health.

at night are the best times (when we’re naturally more relaxed), and to use affirmations in the present tense. It’s also a good idea to have them written down. We also learnt about how tapping and mindful breathing can help with feelings of overwhelm and were tasked with doing this following the session – and held accountable.

The results? We started changing our language behaviour, using more powerful statements such as ‘I should…’ or ‘I know…’, rather than ‘I think..’ which helped reinforce our goals. Reflecting on the affirmations we had written on waking helped focus the mind, while tapping helped with the overwhelm. Zeenat says: “We often remind ourselves of what we haven’t got accomplished in a day, so switch it round and remind yourself of everything you’ve achieved – and how you’re proud of yourself. It will change your thinking and ultimately your mindset.”

How to…get rid of hay fever symptoms

1. Breathing exercises: Breathe in for a count of four, then breathe out for a count of six, repeat. Whether you practise this for a few minutes or even a few seconds, it can make a huge difference to your state of mind and overall health.

2. Positive affirmations: Giving ourselves positive messages is a powerful way to improve mood and self-esteem for the day ahead. It’s up to you what they sound like but here are a couple of my favourites:

• ‘I am calm, relaxed and confident.’

• ‘I am safe and secure.’

3. Gratitude journal: Write down up to three things that you feel grateful for. For example, “I feel grateful for my family for being there for me” or “I feel grateful for the beauty of nature.” Repeating this activity on a daily basis can help us to see the good in our lives more easily.

The best remedy to stressors in our life is to actively bring more positivity into our everyday routine. Even if these habits feel quite alien to us at first, over time they become more natural and could encourage a calmer and more resilient state of mind.

1. Knowing what triggers your hay fever symptoms can help you avoid exposure to allergens. Keep track of when your symptoms occur and what may have caused them, such as certain plants, pets or environmental factors.

2. Limit your exposure to allergens by staying indoors during peak pollen times and keeping windows closed. Wash your bedding in hot water and dust and vacuum regularly.

3. Over-the-counter antihistamines, nasal sprays, and eye drops can help relieve hay fever symptoms such as itching, sneezing and congestion. In severe cases, your doctor may prescribe prescription medication.

4. Some people find relief from hay fever symptoms with natural remedies such as nasal irrigation, herbal supplements or essential oils. However, talk to your doctor before using any natural remedies to ensure they're safe for you.

5. Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and managing stress can help boost your immune system and reduce the severity of symptoms.

New law for cat owners

Thousands of cat owners in the UK have just over a year to microchip their pet else risk receiving a £500 fine due to new legislation.

Hefty fines could also be dished out to the thousands of dog owners who have not microchipped their pets despite it already being a legal requirement to do so.

The experts at Quotezone.co.uk have urged pet owners to microchip their dogs and register them on a national database in order to make it easier to track down lost or stolen pups.

The microchipping law was put in place on 6th April 2016 for dogs and will be mandatory for cats by June 2024.   The number of stray cats is a rising issue, as recent research reveals that 80% of cats coming into Cats Protection’s centres are not microchipped, making it very difficult to reunite them with their owners. Under the new law, the fines for cat owners who are caught not having microchipped their kittens will be the same as for dogs, however cats need to be chipped by the time they’re 20 weeks old.

Your pet pics

Meanwhile, drivers could be fined £1,000 if they accidentally hit a cat and fail to inform the police, under a proposed new law. Experts from LeaseCar.uk are supporting a campaign for the law to be changed to give cats the same rights as many other animals when it comes to road traffic accidents. Currently, drivers must stop and inform police if they hit dogs, horses, cattle, pigs, goats and sheep - but not cats. Many cat owners are left wondering what’s happened to their beloved pets if they’ve been run over by a driver, as it’s not a legal requirement to go to the police or track down the owner.

Business

Make money while you sleep!

Making money while you sleep may sound like a dream, but it's actually possible with the right approach. Here are just ten strategies you can use to generate passive income:

1. Rent your drive: Companies like JustPark allow you to rent your driveway when you’re not using it. It’s handy for those living close to rail stations, event venues, hospitals etc.

2. Dividend stocks: Investing in dividend stocks can provide you with regular income without having to sell your shares. Many established companies pay dividends to their shareholders.

3. Peer-to-peer lending: Peer-to-peer lending platforms allow you to lend money to individuals or small businesses in exchange for interest payments.

4. Create and sell an online course: If you have expertise in a particular field, you can create an online course and sell it on platforms like Udemy or Teachable.

5. Write and sell e-books: If you’re a dab hand at writing, think about compiling an e-book on a topic you're knowledgeable about and sell it on platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.

6. Create and sell stock photos: If you've got a knack for taking photos you can create a portfolio of stock photos and sell them on platforms like Shutterstock or Getty Images.

7. Rent out your belongings: If you have items that aren't being used, you can rent them out to others and earn a passive income. This could include things like storage units or equipment like cameras or drones.

8. Create and sell an online product: If you have a creative streak, you can create and sell digital products such as templates, printables or software tools. Once you've created the product, you can sell it online through platforms like Etsy.

9. Create and sell a mobile app: If you have coding skills, you can create a mobile app and sell it on app stores like Apple's App Store or Google Play Store. Once the app is live, users can download and purchase it, generating passive income through app sales and in-app purchases.

10. Dropshipping: This is an e-commerce business model where you set up an online store and sell products without physically owning or storing inventory. When a customer makes a purchase, you forward the order to a supplier who ships the product directly to the customer. You earn money through the difference between the retail price and the wholesale price.

2. Update your wardrobe: Have a rummage through your wardrobe and decide what you need to update for the warmer weather – think shorts, sundresses and swimwear, as well as other summer essentials like sunscreen, sunglasses and hats.

3. Get in shape: Consider starting a regular exercise routine to help you feel confident and comfortable in your summer clothes. This could include activities like walking, running, swimming or taking a fitness class. Support local businesses such as Flin’s Fitness and Sam Dance Fit!

Understanding different home care services

Whether you’re a family member looking to provide support to a loved one, or an individual looking for in-home assistance, it’s important to understand the different types of home care services that are available. Here is an overview of the various types of home care services and the support they can provide to help you make an informed decision...

Companionship Care - provides companionship and emotional support for a person in their own home. A care professional will provide companionship and emotional support to an individual by engaging in activities together, such as playing cards, board games, or just talking. This type of home care service helps to reduce feelings of isolation, supporting people to retain their sense of self and identity.

Nutrition and hydration care - a type of home care service that focuses on providing assistance with meal preparation, food storage and general nutrition advice. A care professional can provide support with food shopping, meal preparation and food storage. They can also provide nutritional advice in line with the individual’s care plan, helping to ensure that they are getting the nutrition they need.

Medication assistance - focuses on helping an individual manage their medications. A regulated home care provider will liaise with health professionals involved with a person’s care to ensure that the correct medications are being taken as prescribed.

Respite care - caring for a family member or loved one can put a strain on personal relationships. Respite care provides assistance with daily tasks while family members are away, allowing everyone to recharge their batteries.

Home care services can provide physical, emotional and practical support to those in need and can help to improve quality of life.

Game changer for Alzheimer’s?

Research has found that Alzheimer’s is preventable, and now an online questionnaire, supported by new app, COGNITION, can determine your risk of Alzheimer’s and create a plan to dementia proof your lifestyle reducing that risk.

Charity FoodForTheBrain.org carried out research on 380,000 people over a decade covering eight known areas of risk including:

Lack of B vitamins. Oxford University research showed 73% less brain shrinkage and virtually no further memory loss when giving those with pre-dementia B vitamin supplements versus placebos.

Lack of seafood and omega-3 fish oils. A serving of fish a week halved Alzheimer’s risk compared to those who ate none. Studies giving both B vitamins and fish oils show the best evidence for dementia prevention.

£129m to deliver cutting-edge mini drones for UK forces

More than 250 ‘portable and packable’ mini drones will be delivered to the Armed Forces after the award of a contract worth £129 million to Lockheed Martin UK. The drones are due to be operational by 2024 and weigh just over 20 kilograms, with a 4.88 metre wingspan. The portable Stalker is a verticallaunched, near-silent drone providing more than eight hours of imaging capability and able to cover around 60 miles. The packable Indago 4, weighing just 2.27 kilograms, can be folded and carried in a soldier’s backpack and deployed in just two minutes with a range of eight miles. Its high-res camera systems providing zoom capability to accurately identify people, objects, vehicles and weapons, day or night.

Minister for Defence Procurement, Alex Chalk KC said: “It’s crucial we remain at the forefront of innovation, delivering cutting edge capabilities to our deployed forces, ensuring operational advantage is maintained by UK Armed Forces by upgrading the drones, keeping pace with technological changes and emerging threats when required.”

Too much sugar and carbs.  35 predict Alzheimer’s risk later in life. A high level of sugar and insulin in the blood – linked with a high carbohydrate diet – is another driver for Alzheimer’s.

Too little exercise, social and cognitive stimulation. Exercise encourages brain growth and repair. Without stimulation, the health of brain tissues deteriorates affecting memory and thinking. Mental and physical exercise such as puzzles, problem solving and learning a new language all are all beneficial, especially as we head into retirement.

Other areas include consuming plenty of antioxidants from diet, a healthy gut, sleeping well and controlling stress. Targeting all eight earlier in life may reduce dementia risk by as much as two thirds. To find out more visit  www.foodforthebrain.org

3 tips for a great password

World Password Day is on 4th May and provides a reminder for us all to evaluate our passwords. So here are three tips to ensure a strong password…

1. A great password should be unique, complex, and difficult to guess. Avoid using personal information: Don't use your name, date of birth or other personal information as part of your password. This information is often easy to find online and can make your password vulnerable to hacking attempts.

2. Use a passphrase: Instead of a single word, consider using a passphrase made up of multiple words. This can make your password more complex and difficult to guess. For example, "thelazybrownfox" is a passphrase that's easier to remember than a random string of characters, but still difficult to crack. Even better if you add numbers and upper and lowercase letters.

3. Use a password manager: remember multiple strong passwords, consider using a password manager. These tools can generate and store unique passwords for each of your accounts, so you don't have to remember them all yourself. Just make sure to use a strong master password to protect your password manager!

A Final Thought…

Funerals.... who are they for?

Working as a Professional Funeral Celebrant, the subject often comes up about funerals and why we have them, especially when I visit families to discuss the funeral service that we are putting together for their loved one.

Quite often, families will say that their loved one’s request was "oh just put me in a wheelie bin and be done with it".... no fuss or expense wanted when their end of life finally arrives, and definitely not wanting that pressure and expense put on their loved ones, who may have to pay out for it.

But isn’t a funeral for the benefit of those who are left behind? Surely it is their grief we are tending to, saying a fitting farewell to allow their pain to surface, and to say goodbye in a way that also reminds them of their loved one, with chosen songs that remind us of them, and also the sharing of humorous stories, as well as talking about their character and the deeds that they have done.

That bond that you have shared in life with the person who has died, that bond is worth celebrating when they are no more.

I've always said that funerals are for the living, not the dead. It’s our way of grieving and adapting to the loss, celebrating all those things that we loved about them, and of course, how we will continue to love and remember them too.

Just recently, we have seen a rise in direct cremation, I'm not a huge supporter of this simply because I've seen a rise in how it impacts our grief after, and I understand grief well enough to know that all phases of life need to be celebrated.

love confirmed and the possibility of, again, more lives that come from that union. And sadly, when someone’s life ends, we join together to support each other and mourn their passing, but still celebrating the life that's been lived.

As humans it is that thing that we are. That means life and celebrating it; it is the way that we move through each phase and form of our existence.

But don't get me wrong; it's not about costs and spending money that isn’t there. A celebration of life at the end doesn't have to cost the earth; there are many ways of remembering and paying tribute to a life that meant something to you. We shouldn’t just ignore it or dictate to our loved ones that you don’t want to be celebrated when you are gone. You won’t be there, but they will.

If you have those conversations (which you should) with your loved ones, and if your relatives request the wheelie bin (or something similar), explain that it’s important to you to celebrate them and remember them for the impact that they had on your life - and that funerals are for those who remain.

If you have been affected by grief, The Bereavement Café is held on the last Thursday of every month at Orpington Village Hall at 11.30am - all are welcome. See www.facebook.com/bereavementcafe for details.

If you are a grief counsellor and would like to volunteer you can contact us on the details above.

When there is news of a pregnancy, and then the birth, we celebrate with coming together and well wishes for that new life and the opportunities we hope for it. When that child grows and reaches birthdays and milestones, again we celebrate. When two lives join together as partners, we are joyous in those unions, with

A MAGIC MOMENT

In August 1962 I was on holiday with my parents in Eastbourne, Sussex, my Dad’s favourite resort. We were in a hotel, a considerably up-market accommodation compared to his more usual choice of a caravan or chalet.

I had recently turned 14 and was aware of the buzz going on about the 60s and the revolutionary freedom it offered. But when it came to relationships, I had yet to benefit from such liberation. I was shy, and if anyone could have explained such an affliction and more importantly how to overcome it, I would have been undyingly grateful. It cursed me with an inability to converse with the opposite sex that I found attractive. An overpowering pounding in my head, plus a disconnection from my brain to my mouth, prevented me from expressing my thoughts. This was accompanied by a bright red colouration to my cheeks, a burning sensation inside, eliciting the amusement and unwelcome attention of pretty much everyone in my vicinity. “Oh, look,” they’d say, “he’s shy!”

So, that said, what happened when Susan Peterson sat at a table with her parents adjacent to the one I was sharing with my parents at breakfast, was inexplicable. She was very pretty and by noticing this I had caught her attention. Unusually for me, I didn’t look away or blush, and drums weren’t playing in my head. I just smiled, she smiled back, and, what seemed like the next instant, I was standing next to her asking her if she’d like to go for a walk along the beach with me after breakfast (or at least it was words to that affect).

Both she and her parents must have acquiesced because we were indeed that morning walking along the beach together, holding hands. Some nervousness had returned

leaving me vocally paralised, and she may well have been in a similar state as she was silent also. Eventually I said, “The sea looks nice,” or something equally lame, but she graciously smiled and agreed. I suggested a swim but she pointed out we had no costumes. I wanted to say “So what?” but chose not to. But I had at least found my voice and we had a conversation.

Being with her felt good, really good, and I didn’t want to say or do anything to risk spoiling the magic of the moment. I’d found out her name, that she was also 14, that she had no boyfriend, but that she lived in Leeds, a distance from where I lived in Kent. That may as well have been Australia from an access point of view. Also, that she was going home that afternoon.

As we were about to go back to the hotel I asked “Can I kiss you?” Her answer, “I don’t know,” bemused me. Did she mean she didn’t know if I was capable or if she’d let me? Or if she wanted me to? We walked in silence. Approaching a beach side café, not much bigger than a beach hut, I offered to buy her an ice-cream. She smiled again, oh such a smile, as she said “Thanks.” We both had a cornet, which we enjoyably consumed sitting on a nearby bench. All too soon we were back in the hotel lobby. As we began to part she turned and kissed me, a long kiss on the lips, then she smiled once more went upstairs, and out of my life forever.
