In the first lockdown I learned all the capital cities of the world off by heart. I’ve forgotten most of them now though!

September usually brings sighs of relief as children head back to school and, for those of us juggling work and parenthood, a more structured schedule resumes.

On the subject of school, and more specifically education, here at Life In Magazines we love learning new things and we spend a significant amount of time each month researching topics to include in each issue - we call it one of the perks of the job! This month we learned that a new ‘greener’ fuel type will be offered on petrol forecourts imminently, so of course we gave this a mention on the Eco page (p26). The launch of E10 fuel is part of a government initiative to reduce greenhouse gases, with the aim of cutting transport carbon dioxide emissions by 750,000 tonnes a year, which is the equivalent of removing 350,000 cars from our roads – what a great idea and certainly a move in the right direction to protect our planet.

Swimming Blues Hurray, I went swimming for the first time in two years, But when I donned my cossie it confirmed my worst fears, I looked like two people trying to get out of a sack, When I looked in the mirror I was quite taken aback.

The Covid lockdowns have certainly taken their toll, I have two spare tyres now so have an extra roll.

Thinking I would frighten everyone out of the pool, For a few minutes I did hesitate and stall.

I waited for the other swimmers to grin and stare, But when I slid into the warm pool I didn’t care.

It was wonderful being in the water again, Even though I’m now swimming in the slower lane.

In the lockdowns we’ve had an abundance of leisure, And for me chocolate has been my one guilty pleasure.

I’ve had many a fight with the fridge don’t you know, So, those sinful calorific carbs will have to go!

Of the puds me muvver used to make there’ll be a lack, Looking like two people trying to get out of a sack, Will be a thing of the past while I get slimmer, And of my former slim self you may see a glimmer.

Should we give vaccinations to children for COVID-19?

Elaine Roberts No, being that children have very little risk of getting seriously unwell and that the vaccine is still in a trial stage until 2023, they are much better to contract the disease and build up natural immunity which will have less side effects and last longer.

Lisa Best I don’t have children under 18 anymore, but I think so given the way it is flying round schools. I think they should definitely consider the senior school age children the way so many are having to isolate along with any teachers that have been in close contact.

Love Da Beat Radio

Life In Magazines has teamed up with Love Da Beat Radio, an innovative commercial radio station based in the Bromley borough that places community and young people at the heart of everything it does. We caught up with the station’s founder, Edmund Christie, to find out more…

Hey Ed, what’s the story behind Love Da Beat Radio (LDBR) – why did you launch it?

I launched on 7th July 2017, so four years ago now, from my house using two computers linked together. I’m proud to say that it’s now grown to an office with 30 presenters.

I initially launched LDBR as I was DJing on pirate radio stations and I wanted to have my own station and build my own brand legally.

What type of listeners do you get and what’s the overall aim of the radio station?

We broadcast in 176 countries across the world ranging from the ages of five to the over 65s. I know we attract a wide range of listeners, but we also have the Kids Corner show, where children read books and where siblings or family can listen in on them. Also, we play a number of eclectic genres of music which caters for all ages. Our overall aim of the station is to entertain and engage all our listeners and to support people.

What community projects are you involved in?

LDBR is currently working with local councillors on projects. We were looking forward to Penge Fest in June, but Covid restrictions meant that it was delayed. We are looking forward to participating in festivals and events, and we are also working with the Bromley Youth Engagement Team with the Police, who are supporting us in what we are doing for the young people. In addition, we are also running a mentoring programme for young people, who are involved in gangs and/or crime to engage with them and help support, guide and direct them on the right path to living a better life, which is done on a one-to-one basis. We are also partners with XbyX (Experts by Experience), who are a disabled charity in the Bromley Borough. We support them to do events such as Disability Pride which is held

annually. At the last Disability pride event we had the Mayor of Bromley attend, different councillors, a deaf rapper, a dance group and a disabled comedian, so I’m really looking forward to next year’s event. We have also now partnered with Life In Magazines, where we collaborate with cross promotions and support each other in our journeys.

When you’re not busy with the radio station, what do you get up to?

Well, I work full time as a Custodial Operations Manager in a prison. Basically I’m a Prison Officer at a manager grade. I spend time with my children and go out with my friends and I like to do technical things like fix computers to exercise my brain. I also enjoy DJing and producing music.

What’s next for Love Da Beat Radio?

That’s a good question! Well, we are looking to complete the application to go DAB, as we want to hit an audience locally and enable people to listen to us on their radios and in their cars. We will be hiring more background staff for the running of the radio, so keep a watch on the website for vacancies. And we potentially have some A-List Celebs coming to the station to do interviews, so that’s in the pipeline. We are trying to reach out to other celebs, especially those who live in the borough of Bromley to help support the local cause.

How does it feel to be nominated as a local hero

by Lucy?

I​ was honoured. Lucy has been a great campaigner for everything we've been trying to achieve in Orpington.

Lucy says that you’ve brought plastic-free shopping to Orpington – can you describe how you’ve managed to do that?

I​ bought a second-hand electric vehicle and created a business that could be taken to markets or be taken to someone's house where they could buy organic products like rice, pastas, pulses, oats and a lot more that wasn't in plastic packaging. I also offer refills for things like washing up liquids, washing detergents, all-purpose cleaners and other household cleaning liquids. ​

Why was it important for you to get involved in this – and what’s your background?

I​ was an accountant in London going in to the pandemic, but after the incredibly tough year we all had I decided I wanted to do something more fulfilling. I’ve always lived around the Southeast London/Kent area and was educated in the borough. I love the outdoors, especially camping with the kids as it gives me an opportunity to switch off and remind myself how wonderful nature is. Buying organic and fewer chemically-enhanced products is something I've strived to do for as long as I've been buying my own products. My love for the outdoors led me to do research in to what is doing damage to our planet and made me want to buy responsibly.

What are your thoughts on Life In Orpington magazine?

I​ think it's fabulous that Life In Orpington champions all things good about the local area, both places and people.

With the world at our fingertips, I think it's easy to forget that good things are being done on our doorsteps and we maybe need reminding to connect with our local community because it offers more than just the products you're buying. It offers a sense of 'community' - a sense of belonging.

What is it you love most about our local area?

Memories and friends. Although I may have moved back to Lewisham, my childhood area, my teen years and most of my 20s were spent in the Orpington area. Hanging out in Blockbuster where one of my friends worked at the time through to watching football in the Maxwell and the Buff.

Wherever I go in Orpington, there is always something that reminds me of my little community that I built there, and even though many of us have moved out of the area, it will always be full of good memories from my formative years.

What message would you like to spread to encourage people to be more eco-conscious?

'We don't need a few people doing this perfectly, we need millions doing it imperfectly' - this is a quote I see everywhere on social media, but one I think we should all take a closer look at. It's human nature to want to do everything to perfection, but that is an impossible situation.

Don't try and become an eco-warrior overnight because you'll beat yourself up and eventually give up after you realise it's not easy and that in fact it's almost impossible.

Change one small thing about your life, and once that change becomes habit then make another small change. ​ ​ A special ‘Thank You’ to Sue at Time For Flowers for sponsoring the Local Hero bouquet.

Are you involved in any other community-related activities or projects? ​ ince quitting my job in October 2020, I have been very S focused on the business. Other than small donations to an Orpington Scouts club, we have done very little other activities/projects. The goal is to join a local litter picking club with the children and eventually go on beach clean ups too when things return to normal. We use a local Terracycle drop off, but are looking at offering Terracycle ourselves at some point too.

Why do you think community is so important?

I​f 2020 (as horrific as it was) taught us something it was this: If we come together as a community (as Great Britain did), we can overcome even the worst of situations. With support from our neighbours, we truly can do anything.

MAYOR’S VOICE My duties as Mayor are borough-wide in the interests of our residents. In addition, I also ensure Bromley is represented in the important areas of influence, seeking to ensure our aims are understood and appreciated.

The detrimental effect of Covid is the damage caused to our business community with a number of companies unable to continue due to the lack of trade. To assist the recovery, I have undertaken visits to companies who are seeking to promote their businesses to counteract the negative effects.

I enjoyed a recent visit to Orpington for the grand opening of a furniture retailer, Sofology, located in the Crays. It offered a well-designed layout, high quality furniture with original designs coupled with competitive pricing. The initial reaction was good to the delight of staff and management, and further outlets are now being planned.

On Wednesday 14th July, I visited Orpington High Street to meet with some local businesses. Bromley’s first summer camp for children was opened by the Lady Mayoress and myself on the 26th July at The Warren sports ground in Hayes. Children and young people from across Bromley are being given a wonderful holiday with a variety of sports facilities with

expert coaching. I hope the first summer camp will prove to be a great success and continue to be an annual event.

New research from money.co.uk reveals the cross-generational divide in how Brits view their current financial situation, as well as how they are managing their money following the pandemic. The data reveals that Gen Zers (18-24yr olds) are placing the biggest focus on savings, with the generation admitting to saving on average nearly a fifth of their monthly pay (17%). PRODIGAL RETURN

by DIANA ELVIN My dear Gregory, How lovely to hear from you at last and, hopefully, to see you soon. Your dad and I do understand how difficult it is for you to get away when you are in such demand and that if you are offered a star part which involves you haring off abroad just when we were expecting you here, you have to grab the opportunity. We understand, but, Gregory, it has been YEARS! We followed your meteoric rise to fame with great pride.

Obviously, we watch your TV appearances but, alas, getting to any of the theatres would have involved an overnight stay and that is just not possible, because of all the animals.

We did follow your suggestion of ‘Pet Sitters’ but they all, although initially keen, surprisingly found they were ‘fully booked’ once they had all the details!

We respect your belief that it is wrong to ‘muck about with nature’ but when one is caring for creatures of a sociable and obliging disposition one is soon swamped.

Obviously, the original cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs have moved on to that ‘pet paradise’ in the sky but there are now plenty of their offspring underfoot to keep us busy.

The parrot is still around and likely to be so for a good many years. Did you know that this breed can live to be a hundred? Most don’t, admittedly, but Roland shows every sign of enjoying life to the full and being keen to stay around indefinitely. He spouts a lot of words that he must have picked up from you because I can assure you that he did not learn them here. It is most embarrassing when visitors call because he enjoys company and shows off at full volume.

We had no idea of the hazards posed to parrots in the normal domestic home. Glass they fly into, fires ditto, knitting and string they get themselves entangled with, sharp objects they injure their silly selves with, electric wiring they nibble and Roland narrowly avoided getting a shock and/ or setting the house alight. Pens, pencils and matches all pose problems as we learnt the hard way. The vet added that aerosols, smoke and the fumes from heated non-stick surfaces can be lethal. Imagine how difficult it has been to keep the bright and adventurous Roland safe. He is adorable and loving but has been very, very wearing.

He loves fruit and is furious if he sees a human eating some delicacy he feels should be his. Apples are his favourite, grapes are fine as long as they have pips – the seedless sort get spat out, making a squashy mess and oranges give him a ‘good clear-out.’ We learnt fast, of necessity, but fuller instructions would have helped. We had no idea that parrots like pasta until Roland swooped over and removed a mouthful from the plate of a friend. We had invited her over for a meal, intent on persuading her that he was so well behaved and easy to care for (which, by and large, he usually is - now that we have ‘parrot-proofed’ the place) that he would be no trouble for her to look after while we had a short break. Needless to say, we didn’t get our holiday – I think she had made up her mind even before he dived head first into her yoghurt.

When he was sick over the settee the vet revealed that it is normal for a parrot to regurgitate food before a prospective mate. He was merely offering his stomach contents to his lucky owners in the absence of a suitable partner. Did you know they did this? A word of warning would have been helpful. There isn’t a wooden chair in the place left unchewed but, admittedly, Rodney leaves untouched those remnants of curtains that the cats have already shredded.

You say you miss the animals and would like to take them back with you to your latest home. We have grown very fond of them but feel it would not be right for us to hang on to them when they really belong to you.

Head to Keston to recycle your compost Waste-aware gardeners in and around Keston are now able to recycle their compost packaging thanks to a trial scheme from Dobbies Garden Centres. The company has teamed up with Evergreen Garden Care on the initiative which will see garden furniture created from the recycled material and donated to Greenfingers, a charity that creates green spaces for terminally-ill children. The Keston recycling scheme will be open for the first three weeks of September at Dobbies near Keston Mark.

The Tokyu Hotels Group has unveiled the world’s first hydrogen hotel in Kawasaki in Japan, which is entirely powered by waste. Hydrogen created from waste plastic supplies 30% of the hotel's energy needs and food waste is used to generate the other 70%.

It’s Zero Waste Week from 6th-10th September and what better way to mark the occasion than by making the switch to biodegradable and plantable Sprout pencils as a more sustainable stationery swap? The pencils are made from sustainably harvested wood, are fully biodegradable and are made from 100% natural materials including a graphite writing core and a cedar wood body. My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do.

I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington.

So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye.

But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

Start Up Bromley has officially opened the doors of its new business lounge in Orpington, located at Orpington Library.

Once registered, small businesses and start-ups can use the space to meet with customers and clients, network and receive business support. The new membership programme is designed for anyone starting a business in the borough and is provided by Bromley Libraries in partnership with Bromley Council and the British Library’s Business and IP Centre Network. Registration is free and the facilities are also free to use for members. Lee’s tip: Responding to criticism If you find yourself having to deal with a complaint or negative feedback, consider the following:

1. Is this someone who you think should be your ideal client?

2. If yes, what has gone wrong with your process that they had a bad experience?

3. If no, then they are not your target audience and you should deal with them courteously and professionally, and learn to not target those type of customers.

While we should always be open to feedback that can help us improve our business, it is important that we don’t take all feedback on board and that we stay true to what we want our business to be. It is always hard to hear complaints of your business, but you have to weigh these comments up alongside your positive interactions and reviews. If more people like your business than criticise it, then you know that your business is sound - you have just sold to the wrong person on this occasion.

Husband and wife team, Eniko and Tony Benfield.

The background: Compassion Homecare celebrates its 10th anniversary next year. The company offers clients, mostly elderly, support at home including shopping, everyday tasks, personal care and medication management. It is also a nursemanaged company (Eniko is a registered nurse), meaning that they can offer clients both health care and social care at home, eliminating unnecessary admissions to hospital.

What they are proud of: Their staff, whom Eniko says have “ploughed through the whole pandemic without any complaints and have really gone the extra mile and rolled their sleeves up, despite of all the changes in care needs”. the team considerably despite the pandemic. Eniko has recently re-registered as a nurse, and over the last year the company has gone paperless and has introduced new technology including an online care system and app.

Championing small businesses Cllr Hannah Gray, Mayor of Bromley 2020/21, has officially taken up the borough’s Small Business Champion post. We chat all things business and get the lowdown on what small businesses need to know…

Q: You’re familiar with the Small Business Champion post, having previously taken up the role for a couple of years - why did you agree to taking it up again?

I’m very passionate about small businesses and really feel we need to help them, especially after lockdown. When Yvonne Bear stepped down from the role (to step up as the chair of the Renewal, Recreation and Housing PDS Committee), I felt it had my name on it as I’ve done it before and I’m known within the business community.

Q: Can you give an overview of what being Small Business Champion entails and what your responsibilities are?

I liaise between small businesses and the council to make sure that the council knows what small businesses need and also make sure that small businesses know what the council is doing. It’s really making sure that people are properly informed as to what is going on and encouraged as much as possible. For example, there are new Startup Lounges in Orpington and Bromley libraries for small businesses, so I want to make sure that facilities like this exist for small businesses and get the word out about them. Another project that is being rolled out is Bromley’s partnership with Openreach to bring ultrafast full fibre broadband for homes

and businesses in the borough. We will be one of London’s fastest boroughs for broadband in the first instance, which is very exciting.

Q: What message right now do you want to get across to small business owners?

I’d encourage small businesses to keep their eye on any help that is available to them from the borough, such as grants. One way of doing this is to sign up to the Bromley Business Newsletter and keep an eye on the website, which is constantly evolving. In addition, a new Economic Development Strategy for the borough has been confirmed.

The plans, which are designed to support economic growth up to 2031, include help for businesses such as boosting opportunities for access to education and skills to ensure healthy employment in the future, as well as access to the right employment spaces to encourage enterprise and sustained growth.

Take the inside out!

Summer may be on its way out, but that doesn’t mean you can stop tending to your garden. Here, stylist Flossie Saunders shares her tips on how to bring the inside out.

1. Introduce soft furnishings: We often look to

textiles and soft furnishings as a way to add warmth and change the look of a space indoors, but the same rule applies for the outside. Adding some beautiful textiles is a quick and cost-effective way to reinvent an outdoor area. Ideas range from outdoor rugs and tablecloths, to large cushions and throws.

2. Get creative with colour: Bright colours really

pop in the sunlight, and work in a garden large or small. Get creative and use colour to your advantage to create zones of colour within your garden, as you would an open living space.

3. Invest in lights: Whether it be solar operated

festoon lights on a tree or balcony, electric lights installed on your decking, candles flickering on your table or large pillar candles in lanterns adding lights allows you to use your space long into the night.

4. The finishing touches: Adding the finishing

touches to a table setting outdoors can transport your dining space from fine to fabulous. A vase or small vases of seasonal blooms and flowers on your outdoor table and lit candles can really transform a setting.

5. Open up the space: If you want to create the illusion of space, an outdoor mirror hung or resting on a wall is perfect for reflecting both the light and the space.

How to deal with…heatstroke Heatstroke happens when the body gets so hot that it can't control its temperature. Symptoms include having hot, flushed, dry skin; headache; feeling dizzy or being confused and restless, which gets worse quickly and the person becomes unresponsive.

What to do: Call 999/112 immediately. Cool them by moving them into a cool environment and remove their outer clothing. Wrap them in a cold, wet sheet and begin pouring water over them. Keep cooling them while waiting for help to arrive. If their temperature returns to normal and they no longer feel hot to touch, you can stop cooling them.

Productivity: work smarter, not harder!

Ok so you’ve had a bit of a break over the summer, have put things to one side and now you’re feeling the overwhelm of what you have to do. Is it you putting unnecessary pressure on yourself or do these jobs need to get done right now?

Perhaps you are reading this article BUT you really should be getting on with a work matter that you keep putting off - the total art of procrastination! You are not alone - we all do it.

So here are five pointers to help you become productive, keep you motivated and work smarter, not harder…

# Focus on most important tasks first

MIT’S = Most Important Tasks. At the beginning of your day choose 1–3 MITs - the things that, no matter what, you need to finish by the end of the day. By focusing on just a few things that are important, it’s easier to create a meaningful to-do list, and make sure those MIT’s get done!

# Keep a distraction list to stay focused

We have all been there, deep in middle of a project then suddenly a social media distraction comes along, a thought that we need to call someone, pay an invoice etc… so simply just keep a spreadsheet or a piece of paper to hand and jot down your ideas/distractions and deal with them after the job you have in hand is done.

# Break tasks into smaller pieces

Do some of your jobs seem too daunting? Maybe you don’t even know where to start? Start by breaking the job down into smaller to-do jobs and then it won’t seem so daunting.

# Don’t multitask

Do you multitask? If you do, then perhaps you need to rethink. Every time you switch your focus between two things, you have to re-focus on the new task. Because it takes a few minutes to get up to speed on a task, these ‘switching costs’ make multitasking extremely inefficient. However, if you’re cleaning your home while listening to an audiobook/podcast, you’re probably going to be ok. The reason being is that the

two tasks - cleaning and listening - don’t use the same mental resources. But if you’re writing an email while trying to follow the words in a podcast, both tasks are competing for your language resources so your work will slow down and quality will suffer. Plus it also saps your energy and makes your brain more tired, which means that you slow yourself down on future tasks too.

Simple ways to stop multitasking

• Close the tab with your email • Mute Slack/Trello, email and any social media notifications • Don’t respond to calls whilst emailing, writing, typing or researching

# Recharge

Templates, tactics and prioritisation can all help, but they won’t help if you aren’t taking care of yourself.

You need to spend time recharging. That means getting enough sleep every night, exercising and eating healthily. Take time to get outside and get some fresh air. Taking care of your healthy habits is a crucial part of efficient work habits.
