Our NHS Sell Off
We clapped for our doctors and nurses
The altruistic Nightingale heroes; Now they are slapped with curses And reduced to zero.
Their unremitting dedication

To save, heal and rejuvenate, Is the treasure of our nation
Emitting waves of hope and light.
In darkness they walk with lanterns Selflessly holding patients’ hands, Empathetically bandaging, whispering, Nurses change sheets and dirty pans.
Scandals haunt our sacred NHS, As privatisation sweeps in by stealth. Feel the wallet before your pulse!

Greedy corporates suck up public wealth.
Patients agonise while managers smile, The sick on trolleys beg for a bed. Bed blocking by the elderly; a system defiled, Wards filled with panic and dread.
We watch the daily horror show On TV, of staff overworked and stressed. We sense this service will go, Appalled at hundreds dying needless deaths.
This was Britain’s jewel in the crown Free at the point of delivery.
Now shamelessly defunded and drowned, Creating nationwide misery.
Sangita KansalA big thanks to...
The kind ladies at Downe Village church who let my nephew Teddy, who is 12 years old, help with the bell-ringing – you made a young man very happy!

A call to action
I’d like to ask other readers to sign Breast Cancer Now’s #NoTimeToWaste petition to demand the government invests in and takes urgent action to fix the breast screening programme. Diagnosing breast cancer early is SO important. I ignored the small lump I found and ended up running the full gamut of treatment. The wonderful thing to say is that, 20 years on, I am here to tell the story but we know that’s not always the case. Since the pandemic started, nearly 1 million fewer women have had breast screening in England resulting in thousands currently living undiagnosed. Yet opportunities to further invest in, modernise and improve the breast screening programme are being missed by the government. Please join me in doing what we women do best, standing with each other, by signing the charity’s #NoTimeToWaste petition to demand the government invests in and takes urgent action to fix the breast screening programme. The Coronation

There have been 39 coronation ceremonies for monarchs held in England. The first can be traced to the ceremony devised by Saint Dunstan for King Edgar’s crowning at Bath Abbey in 973AD (CE). The earliest form of an oath was an oral contract between a monarch and their people. The crown may have been an ornate helmet. At this time, there was no immediate (or automatic) right of succession, and so a coronation was an essential rite of passage.
Nowadays, a sovereign succeeds, by law, immediately upon the death of another, although the ceremony remains an important event early in a new reign. When William the Conqueror (1066-1087) was crowned on Christmas Day 1066, he began the tradition of holding a lavish coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
The coronation emerged from a European tradition of increasing church involvement in the state, as well as the need to bring stability to often unstable societies in which several individuals had a claim to the throne. Central to the ceremony is the ‘unction’, the act of anointing a monarch with holy oil. It can be dated back to the 7th or 8th century. This signals the conferment of God’s grace upon a ruler.
Today, the United Kingdom is the only European monarchy to retain such a ceremony. As we all know, the last one was for Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June 1953 and the next one is on 6th May 2023 for King Charles III. Every ceremony is different and organised and paid for by the state, with input from the new monarch. The coronation of Charles III has evolved from the coronation of King Edward VII.
When ceremonies go wrong…
• When the Archbishop of Canterbury tried to put the ring on the finger of Queen Victoria, he tried to ram it on her fourth finger, but it had been sized for the little pinky. After the ceremony she had to soak her hand in iced water to get the ring off.
• Sometimes the crown jewels had been lost or went missing. During the English Civil War, the crown jewels were pawned by the Royalists to pay for their part of the military conflict. After the war Oliver Cromwell melted down some of the jewels for his own use and Charles II had to commission new jewels for his coronation.
• At nine years old, Henry III was crowned at Glastonbury Abbey in 1220 with one of his mother’s circlets because his father, King John, had lost the crown jewels when his baggage train overturned in a bog. Four years later, with new crown jewels, Henry had a second proper coronation in Westminster Cathedral.
• George IV was married to Queen Caroline, whom he did not like. He did not want her at his coronation and she was determined to attend. She was left outside banging on the abbey doors, but the guards would not let her in and she was turned away.

Luxury flats planned for the high street
Plans to bring 40 new luxury flats to Orpington’s high street have taken a step forward after boutique property developer Life
Less Ordinary confirmed that the London Borough of Bromley had approved plans to create a four- to five-storey mixed use development, with construction now underway.

The new development will sit alongside an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants and bars and is within easy walking distance of Orpington Station. The new homes will offer a mix of one-, twoand three-bedroom apartments each benefitting from bespoke German kitchens, stylish bathrooms and their own private balconies, together with shared landscaped amenity space.
The property developer anticipates a build programme of 18 months with sales being launched during summer 2024.

15-year-old Emma Appah from Orpington has been selected as the South East winner in Pearson’s national writing competition, My Twist on a Tale, Represent!, with her poem about social injustice published in the new book. Emma’s contribution, Dear Ghetto Girl, was chosen alongside 17 other stories and poems written by children across the country, and begins with a line from the classic nursery rhyme, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, growing into a major commentary on racial inequality and injustice; encompassing white privilege, discrimination in the justice system, exclusionary rhetoric around immigration and belonging, and the need for minorities to stay visible and present.

You can bet on Betsi!

Win a flight in a Spitfire!

The Powley family founded Real Eazy after their nine-year old daughter Betsi, was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Ewing Sarcoma in November 2021.
As Betsi went through chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, it soon became apparent that as part of her care she was often disturbed, whilst resting or sleeping, to access her medical lines. This was obviously vital to her care, but at a time when she was at her weakest and needed to rest as much as possible.
This was the trigger that inspired Betsi and her family to design sleepwear that would allow medical access with minimal movement, allowing the child to rest and not feel self-conscious.
The family are now making their super comfy hoodies available for purchase at www.realeazy.uk and each sale will automatically release funds to allow the donation (completely free of charge) of a set of their specially adapted sleepwear pyjamas to a child who is receiving treatment for cancer.

For more information see www.realeazy.uk and you can follow Betsi’s journey on Instagram @betsiatthemarsden

Works commence on St Paul’s Cray Library
Works to refurbish and remodel St Paul’s Cray library have commenced, with the library service temporarily operating from the nearby Cotmandene Resource Centre.
The planned works will create improved spaces and modern facilities in the library, including accessible toilets and consultation rooms. Additional services will also be offered to allow the valued Cotmandene Resource Centre service to be relocated on site, as announced in last month’s issue.
Once the refurbishment is completed this summer, the operating hours of the library will then be extended as the community resource centre service can open on current library closed days and make full use of the building.
SUPPORTING LOCAL AUTHORS…
Published poet and prose writer, Richard DJJ Bowdery, is 66 and works part-time. His new book, ‘let sleeping dogs stand' is out this month.

Why did you decide to write a book and how was the experience?
Although my poems have appeared in pamphlets, anthologies and online, this will be the first book of poetry I’ve had published. The ideas come easy. Completing them doesn’t. I’m never happy with my first draft and often not even my tenth. I think my writing process more nearly resembles that of a sculptor. I chip away with my pencil until I get something I’m reasonably happy with. Then I step away for a while, maybe a few days, possibly a couple of weeks, sometimes a few months and in extreme cases a year or more. Then I chip away with the pencil again until I'm ready to unveil my sculpture.
Who is your book aimed at?
Anyone who enjoys reading poetry. They don’t have to be writers of it themselves, just people who enjoy that creative form. That said I hope that they would also appeal to someone who has never read poetry before. The poems in this book largely speak of the here and now, touching on subjects that affect us all.
Are there any more books in the pipeline do you think?
Poetry? Yes. I enjoy comic verse particularly that of Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, John Henley, Pam Ayers, Spike Milligan and Ogden Nash. So my next book may well be full of comic verse. Humour is a wonderful tonic and right now we need that more than ever. I’m also writing stories for my grandchildren which I hope to get published someday.
How much is your book and where is it available for people to buy?
The price is £5 plus P&P. I am currently looking at several outlet options. These should be finalised after Easter and details will be available at richardbowderywriter.wordpress.com by 14 May.
Richard will be launching his book at two upcoming local events as part of the Orpington Literary Festival. The two events are: Orpington In Letters — Literary Light Bites at the Croft Tearoom, High Street, St Mary Cray on Wednesday
17th May 10.30am-12 noon, and Orpington In Letters — Literary Short Bites at Orpington Library, The Walnuts on Thursday 18th May at 10.30am-11.30am. There is a £6 entry to Croft Tearoom event which includes a cup of tea/coffee and a slice of cake.
If you’re a local author or know of one, email hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk for the chance to be featured.

NORMAN PARK COMMUNITY SPORTS CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENS

Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC’s new Community Sports Centre at Norman Park in Bromley has officially opened. The opening ceremony, held recently, marked the culmination of a project that has its roots in discussions with the London Borough of Bromley, commencing in 2013, concerning the possibility of the club taking over the responsibility for the operation and management of the existing track. These led to the formulation of an ambitious plan, involving the transfer of the track on a long lease to the club, who would move their Hayes Clubhouse and develop a new sports centre for the community at the track in order to underpin the long term future of the facility.
For the full list of events visit www.heverfestival.co.uk or call 07379-488477.
The Mayor of Bromley, Cllr Hannah Gray, conducted the ribbon cutting ceremony and commented: “It is wonderful that Bromley Council has been able to help and support the growth of Blackheath & Bromley Harriers in this way. Sport can play such an important role in the lives of a community, so I look forward to seeing Blackheath & Bromley Harriers go from strength to strength at this new community sports centre, making athletics available to the local community and nurturing the champions of the future.”

Local Heroes...
(Because not all heroes wear capes)
Debbie Elwell & Zoe Carver
Karen Britton nominated Debbie Elwell and Zoe Carver from Harlequins Theatre School as local heroes. Karen said: “My daughter has been with Harlequins since she was five and she is now 13. When she was 11 her father had a stroke at the age of 47. He is disabled and unable to work again. I told Harlequins that unfortunately AvaGrace would not be able to attend anymore as we could not afford the term fees. They gave her a full scholarship so that she was able to continue singing and attend drama lessons every week, take part in shows, have wonderful experiences and make lovely memories. They still are not charging me anything two years on. Their motto is ‘trained like professionals, treated like family’ and this is certainly the case.
Congratulations on the nomination Debbie & Zoe! How does it feel to be named joint local hero by Karen?

We are extremely flattered that Karen has nominated us it was completely out of the blue. It’s really nice that all of our hard work, passion and dedication to our school has been recognised.
Your motto is ‘trained like professionals treated like family’ is that what inspired your act of kindness for Karen/Ava-Grace?
Absolutely - we treat all of our students like extended family and know all of our parents on a first name basis. We couldn't imagine not having this relationship with everyone in our school.
How did you end up working together?
We trained together at Reynolds Performing Arts Academy when we were 16 years old. Subsequently we ended up working on lots of professional contracts together because of our chemistry. One of them was a children's entertainment company! We then founded our own entertainment company and the theatre school followed on from there.

What is the most rewarding part of the job? Seeing the students progress and develop from mini performers up to our senior students.
Have you been involved in any other community related projects?
We have given scholarships to lots of children that would have otherwise not had access to performing arts. We work a lot with local charities and put on regular fundraising events throughout our school calendar year.
What’s your favourite thing about living in the Bromley Borough?
There is always something to do in Bromley. We love to visit the Churchill Theatre and watch a local show.
What does 2023 and beyond have in store for you both?
We would like to continue to grow and develop. We have recently created an elite branch of our school so are excited to see where these talented students can get to.
Words of advice for aspiring thespians?
Don't give up, try hard and ignore anyone who isn’t your biggest cheerleader.
What message would you like to give people reading this?
Smile - you never know what somebody else is going through; it's easier to be kind than to be mean.
A special ‘Thank You’ to Time For Flowers for sponsoring the bouquets and plants for our Local Heroes.
Nominate a local hero – it could be a friend, neighbour, local business or a member of your family! Email hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk

MAYOR’S VOICE community
I have had a tremendous time since last I wrote, meeting and chatting with the younger citizens of Bromley. I have witnessed the musical mastery of our young people at the Bromley Youth Music Trust Proms concerts and at Bishop Challoner School, and welcomed the inquisitive children of Harris Academy Beckenham to the Old Palace at the Civic Centre. I visited The Learning Centre to meet new principal, Helen Dyer, and was incredibly impressed by the sporting prowess of all the children taking part in the Bromley Schools Cross Country at Crystal Palace Park!
On the subject of sport, I was delighted to be able to open Blackheath and Bromley Harriers’ new Community Sports Centre in Norman Park and to support the stalwart swimmers putting in lengths of West Wickham pool as part of Beckenham Rotary Club’s swimalong. I was also lucky enough to see the Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race at close quarters, thanks to a fundraising event staged by the Mayor of Wandsworth.
Thank you to everyone who has donated money to my
Lines from Linda
Ah, the month we’ve all been talking about; it is the Coronation of Charles III. I love royalty, and I have been fortunate enough to have met our King and Queen on a couple of occasions.
And, wearing my hat as an actress, I have also played many a royal role. A lot of our heritage buildings and outside theatres still produce Shakespeare during the summer months. Shakespeare wrote for the royal court, so a lot of his work is about kings and queens. I think I mentioned in an earlier column, I once played Lady Macbeth, who, as we all know, became a queen, briefly, before she went mad. I have also played Ophelia, earlier in my career. She wasn’t a queen but similarly she also went mad (Am I noticing a running pattern in the casting here, because I also once played the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, and she is, definitely, as mad as a bunch of frogs.)
I yearned to play Queen Cleopatra, but alas I am blonde and she is always cast as dark-haired. I have appeared in a production of it, though. I played Octavia, and watching my friend caressing a life-like, plastic snake every day, and twice on matinee days, made me glad my hairdresser has kept me a blonde. Yes, us actresses undertake some very strange activities for the love of art. I had to have a custard tart squashed into my face in a television sketch many years ago. I agreed to it, as I love custard tarts. No one told me until we were on the set, that it wasn’t genuinely a custard tart,
own charities – Everybreath and the Bromley Care Leavers Come Dine With Us project – or who has attended one of my fundraising events. My final event was a wonderful meal at the Honourable Artillery Company. The evening was made extra special as the venue holds a very special place in my heart through family connections.
I recently took the opportunity to say thank you to council officers working hard on your behalf at Bromley’s Civic centre. Theirs are not always easy jobs, and I wanted to make sure they knew their hard work was appreciated.
I am passionate about supporting small businesses, so I was delighted to be able to open a panel discussion as part of Start Up Bromley’s Start Up Business week. It was also great to meet up with one of the businesses that I’ve supported, and have supported me, in the past, Rentadinosaur. They staged musical dino show Jurassica Spectacular at the Churchill Theatre and I even got to catch up with my old friend Dexter the T-Rex! One of my goals as Mayor was to visit our twinned town of Neuwied in Germany. I was delighted to be able to do this recently, and planted a tree that will grow there as a sign of our continuing and flourishing friendship.
it was made from shaving foam, as that looks funnier when it drips everywhere. And, we ended up having to do seven takes!!
Back to royalty. I was once doing a Shakespeare play in the open air, in a heritage building, rumoured to be haunted. One of the actors in the play liked to have a drink before the show and often wandered off into the grounds, when he wasn’t on stage, for another few.

This night, he nearly missed his cue. It was the famous sleepwalking scene in Macbeth. You could have heard a pin drop in the audience, until he belted noisily up the wooden steps to the stage, sadly unaware he had left his teeth in the dressing room! Perspiration was dripping from his face and instead of whispering his rehearsed line, in this exceptionally quiet and tense scene, he shouted, ‘I’ve just seen her. It was her’. ‘You know the ghost queen. She was carrying her head in her hand. And the head was wearing her crown.’
I was stunned into silence and the audience had no idea what was happening. He then looked at the audience and said, ‘There’s a ghost here. I saw her.’ Then he looked at me, and half smiled a toothless grin. ‘Sorry, he said. ‘Gave me a right fright. Carry on.’

CORONATION CHEESE, POTATO AND PINEAPPLE PASTIES

Makes 48
Prep time 40 minutes
Cooking time 20 minutes
Ingredients:
• 600g small Maris Piper potatoes
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 1 large onion, finely chopped
• 1 can (435g) Del Monte® pineapple slices in juice, finely chopped
• 200g cheddar, grated
• 4 x 320g packs ready rolled puff pastry
• 1 egg, lightly beaten
• Salt and pepper
Method:
1. Peel the potatoes and place in a pan of cold water, bring to the boil, add 1 tsp of salt and simmer for 15 minutes, drain well and leave to cool.
2. Meanwhile heat the oil in a large frying pan and cook the onion for 10 minutes over a medium heat until softened but not coloured, remove from the heat.
3. Once the potatoes are cool enough to handle cut into 1cm cubes and add to the onion along with the chopped pineapple pieces and cheddar, stir gently to combine and season to taste with salt and pepper.
4. Preheat the oven to 200°C, Fan 180°C, gas mark 6.
5. Unroll the pastry sheets onto a lightly floured surface and ensure each one measures 24cm x 32cm – roll out slightly or trim if need be. Cut each sheet into 12 x 8cm squares.
6. Take 1 square of pastry, lightly brush the edges with a little beaten egg, then place a spoonful of the potato and pineapple mix into the centre of the square, fold in half to form a triangle and press the edges together to seal, repeat with the remaining squares, ensure the pasties are as full as possible.
7. Using the end of a fork press around the edges of the pasties to create a pattern and ensure they are fully sealed, brush each pasty with beaten egg and place on baking sheets lined with baking parchment. With the tip of a small knife cut 2 small slits in the top of each pasty to allow the steam to escape as they cook, then bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until puffed up and golden. Depending on how big your oven is, you may need to do this in batches.
8. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Classic English recipes
What’s
not to love about classic English recipes?
Many of our wonderful culinary creations offer a great source of comfort food. Think about Sunday roasts served with all the trimmings - Yorkshire pudding, gravy, and vegetables, which can be really comforting for people who grew up eating it.
Then there’s the taste of our classic dishes; although often made with simple ingredients, they are cooked in a way that brings out the flavours. Think about a shepherd's pie - a simple dish of mashed potatoes, lamb mince and vegetables but delicious.
Many English recipes have a long history, passed down through generations which makes them special and unique. And many recipes are part of our culture and a way for people to connect with their heritage and learn about their history.
Here are a few firm favourites – which one is yours?
Fish and chips * Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding * Shepherd's pie * Bangers and mash * Ploughman's lunch * Steak and kidney pie * Toad in the hole * Bubble and squeak * Pork pie * Spotted Dick * Trifle * Sticky Toffee Pudding * Banoffee Pie * Christmas Pudding * Jelly and Ice Cream * Lemon Tart * Apple Pie * Bread and Butter Pudding * Eton Mess *

HOW TO PAIR WINE WITH FOOD
When you’re discussing how to pair wine and food, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. In short, the best wine pairing depends on a variety of factors, including the specific dishes being served, the flavours of the wine, and the personal preferences of the wine drinker.
Generally white wines tend to pair well with lighter foods, such as fish and vegetables, while red wines are often a better choice for heavier dishes, such as red meat and pasta.

You should also aim to match the weight of the wine to the weight of the food. A light-bodied wine, such as a Sauvignon Blanc, will not overpower a delicate dish like grilled fish. On the other hand, a heavy-bodied wine, such as a Cabernet Sauvignon, will stand up to a hearty meal, such as braised beef.
Try taking into account the flavours of the wine and the food. If the wine has a strong flavour, such as a Riesling or a Chardonnay, it will need to be paired with a dish that can stand up to it. On the other hand, a light-bodied wine, such as a Pinot Noir or a Sauvignon Blanc, can be paired with a more delicate dish.
Some examples are:
White wine and fish: A light-bodied white wine, such as a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Grigio, will pair well with fish dishes. The acidity of the wine will help to cut through the richness of the fish, and the flavours of the wine will complement the flavours of the fish.

Red wine and meat: A heavier-bodied red wine, such as a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Merlot, will pair well with meat dishes. The tannins in the wine will help to break down the fat in the meat, and the flavours of the wine will complement the flavours of the meat.
Sparkling wine & appetisers: Sparkling wine is a versatile wine that can be paired with a variety of dishes. It can be served with light appetisers, such as salads and vegetables, or with heavier ones such as cheese and charcuterie.

An in-depth report
FOOD HYGIENE RATINGS
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
The Food Hygiene Ratings System (FHRS) was formally launched in England, Northern Ireland and Wales in November 2010 (a similar scheme also operates in Scotland). The idea was, and still is, to give consumers key information about outlets serving food.

cooled, stored etc); physical conditions of the business (cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation, pest control etc) and management of food safety (processes, training and systems).
The rating will be published online as well on the stickers that businesses display. The date of the last inspection should be on the back of the sticker. If you cannot see a sticker on display, you can ask a member of staff what the business’s rating was at the last inspection or check online at ratings.food.gov.uk.
Sometimes there might be a difference between the rating displayed on a sticker and the rating shown online. This can be because the Local Authority hasn’t yet uploaded the most recent rating or because the business has appealed against its most recent rating and is waiting for the outcome. The types of business covered by the FHRS usually fit into one of the following categories:
• Restaurants, pubs and cafes
• Take-aways, food vans and stalls
• Canteens and hotels
• Supermarkets and other food shops
Many businesses display a green and black sticker on their door or window, telling us what their hygiene rating is. It is important to remember that businesses in England are not legally obliged to display their hygiene rating.
It is obvious that a business with a rating of 5 has much better hygiene than a business rated 1 or even 0, but what exactly are these ratings based on?
First of all, the Hygiene Rating is not based on customer service, culinary skill and presentation or the quality of the food. You can use the system to understand how hygienically a café or restaurant is working, but not as a guide to how tasty your meal might be.
The Hygiene Rating is based on a ‘snapshot’ of the standards of food hygiene observed by a Local Authority Food Safety Officer at their most recent inspection. The officer will be basing their judgement on:
• The handling of food
• The storage of food
• The preparation of food
• Cleanliness of facilities
• How food safety is managed

The three major elements of an inspection are: the handling of food (how it’s prepared, cooked, re-heated,
• Schools, hospitals and care homes
The frequency of inspections ranges from six months to two years, depending on factors such as the type of food handled by a business, the number of vulnerable customers served, the food processes operated by the business and the standard of hygiene seen at the last inspection.
Local Authorities can monitor businesses in between inspections as well.
There are some businesses that get visited by Food Safety Officers but don’t get food hygiene ratings. These include ‘low-risk’ businesses like newsagents or chemists that sell pre-wrapped goods that don’t require refrigeration, as well as childminders or businesses that offer caring services at home.
If you have any concerns about the hygiene of a business or other questions and issues, you can contact Bromley Food Safety Officers by emailing food@bromley.gov.uk or see bromley.gov.uk/info/407/food_safety. Also see food.gov.uk/ safety-hygiene/food-hygiene-rating-scheme
If you ever have a case of suspected food poisoning, contact your GP in the first instance as it is a notifiable infectious disease. Also consider contacting your local environmental health or food safety team.

YOUR LOCAL GUIDE: THE KING’S CORONATION
How to celebrate
On Saturday 6th May the Coronation of King Charles III takes place. Here’s your insight into what happens on the day, some interesting facts you might not know, plus ideas for street parties – let the festivities begin!

What happens at a Coronation?
The Coronation of a King or Queen in the UK is a historic and ceremonial event that marks the official beginning of their reign. Here are some key elements of the ceremony:
The Oath: The new monarch takes an oath to uphold the laws and customs of the country and to serve the people to the best of their ability.
The Anointing: The new monarch is anointed with holy oil by the Archbishop of Canterbury, signifying their consecration as the sovereign ruler.
The Investiture: The new monarch is invested with the symbols of power, including the crown, the sceptre and the rod.
The Homage: The new monarch receives the homage of the representatives of the British people, including the peers of the realm and the representatives of the Church, the armed forces and the people.
The Procession: The new monarch leads a procession from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace, accompanied by members of the royal family and other dignitaries.
The Celebrations: The Coronation is followed by a series of celebrations, including banquets, concerts and other events to mark the occasion.
3 little known facts about King Charles III
1. He is a philanthropist and is involved with numerous charitable organisations and causes, including the environment, architecture and community development.
2. Charles is known for his interest in alternative therapies and holistic health. He has been a strong advocate for organic farming and sustainable agriculture.
3. He’s a skilled painter and author, and has written several books on subjects such as architecture, the environment and traditional crafts.
Say what?
King Charles is known for his wit and humour, and has made several memorable one-liners throughout his life. Here are a few of his most famous quotes:
"I'm a great believer in destiny. I think one's path is always there."
"I've learned that you don't have to be an expert to have an opinion."
"The greatest threat to the planet is the belief that someone else will save it."
"We all have an opportunity to make a difference, no matter how small."
"I’ve always believed that the most important thing is to be authentic, to be yourself."
"It is possible to build a better world for all, but it will not happen automatically."
Ideas for street parties
If you’re planning a Street Party, then you’ll either have permission to close your road or you can run what is called a ‘Street Meet.’ If you live in a cul de sac, councils are generally happy for this to go ahead without permission. Otherwise, you can use driveways, parking areas and front gardens which don’t require council permission, as long as you don’t obstruct pavements.
• Get your neighbours involved from the start. Invite them to a social media group so everyone discusses the day beforehand.
• Ask everyone to bring a dish and drink, and don’t forget to include vegetarian/vegan type options.
• Consider classic British recipes, such as Scotch Eggs, sausage rolls, Bakewell Tart and Victoria Sponge cake. Alternatively, you could plan a BBQ if using private land.
• Consider whether you will buy plastic cutlery or reduce waste and encourage neighbours to bring their own.
• If you need crockery, consider buying some mismatched plates from a charity shop, they appear much more authentic, cause less waste and the charity will benefit from your purchase. You could even clean them up and return them for resale.
• Task the local children with creating bunting, flags on (paper) straws, and paper chains.
• Consider setting up a Spotify playlist and sharing the link with your neighbours who can add their music to it as well. aplan.co.uk
Celebrating the Coronation in Orpington
Saturday 6 May - Monday 8 May 2023
The enthusiasm for the Coronation across Bromley has been incredible, with over 170 street parties being planned across the borough over the celebratory bank holiday – so expect a lively and joyous weekend!

If you’re going to one of these street parties, you may just catch the Mayor of Bromley out and about as she embarks on another street party tour, trying to visit as many of these great street parties as possible. The Mayor was just as busy for the Platinum Jubilee last year, where she had a record number of street parties to get round, alongside a number of other great events. You may enjoy some of the photos on this page taken across the borough during the Platinum Jubilee, to help get you ready to celebrate again!
Of course, street parties are not the only way to celebrate in Orpington, so why not get together with your friends and families and come along to watch the Coronation ceremony on the big screen in Orpington’s Market Square. The festivities are from 10am-4pm (subject to confirmation), and residents can also enjoy live music, entertainment and a range of activities, all courtesy of Orpington 1st.
As we approach the Coronation, you may spot the borough’s shops and high streets looking a bit more regal! If you do come across some impressive shop front displays, then why not ask the owners for a photo and
send it in for Bromley’s best decorated shop competition. The winning shop will get a visit from the Mayor of Bromley to kick off the Coronation celebrations – so get your nominations in while there’s still time at www. bromley.gov.uk/Coronation.
If you’re heading to Bromley town centre in the run-up to the Coronation, you may notice some colourful posters on display – these are the winning entries of the Kingdom of Bromley poster competition, which saw many school children create vibrant designs to illustrate and enhance the local Coronation spirit.
The borough’s high streets are also being enlivened for the Coronation, with £20,000 being allocated to decorate town centres, courtesy of Bromley Council and being delivered through the borough’s BIDs*. Many community groups across the borough are also getting a little boost from the Council to help their celebrations, with small grants of up to £500 going to groups like residents’ associations to support free community events over the special bank holiday and make sure everyone gets the chance to celebrate.
As you can see, there is plenty going on for the Coronation throughout the borough and this is just the tip of the iceberg! Stay up to date with the borough’s Coronation plans at www.bromley.gov.uk/Coronation.

Home & Garden
BRING YOUR LAWN TO LIFE!
The Wildlife Trusts and Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) are calling on gardeners to reimagine their lawns this summer as they launch their ‘Bring your lawn to life’ initiative. The charities are encouraging gardeners to experiment with a new look lawn in 2023 for the benefit of wildlife and also the wider environment. They are inviting people to raise the blade on their mower and cut their grass less regularly, embrace daisies, dandelions, clovers and other naturally flowering plants, and even grow container lawns if space is at a premium. Lawns left to grow long are shown to help mitigate flooding by better soaking up rainwater, counter the heat island effect in urban areas through their cooling properties, and capture pollutants. They are also better at resisting browning during dry spells than short grass owing to their longer roots.
Five ways to love your lawn this year:
1. Reduce the frequency of mowing to once every three to four weeks to allow flowers such as dandelion and speedwell to bloom and help pollinators.

2. Keep some areas short as pathways, sunbathing spots, and foraging areas for worm-eating birds. For the rest, let the grass grow a little longer, offering shelter to grasshoppers and other insects. In turn, these creatures are food for frogs, birds, and bats.
3. Allow parts of your lawn to grow long for the whole summer so that caterpillars can feed and transform into butterflies and moths.
4. Turn a blind eye to the odd bare patch within a lawn as these provide sites for ground nesting bees.
5. If you do want a luscious green carpet, consider growing hardy yarrow within your lawn or, where there is limited footfall, experiment with a tapestry lawn and grow herbs and flowers such as chamomile and creeping thyme.

1. Paint your walls: A fresh coat of paint can instantly update a room and make it look more high-end. Choose a neutral colour, like grey or beige, for a sophisticated look.
2. Invest in statement lighting: A statement lighting fixture, like a chandelier or pendant light can add a touch of luxury to a room. Look for affordable options at discount stores or online retailers.
3. Add mirrors: Mirrors can make a space look larger and more glamorous. Consider hanging a large mirror on a statement wall or adding a few smaller mirrors to create a gallery wall.
4. Add a rug: A plush rug can make a room look more inviting and luxurious. Choose colours that complement your colour scheme.
5. Hang curtains: Hanging curtains can make a room feel more polished and elegant. Choose curtains that are long enough to reach the floor and made of a luxurious fabric, like velvet. Keep your eye out for end of line curtains that have been reduced.
6. Invest in statement decor: Adding a few statement decor pieces, like bold artwork or a unique sculpture, will add a touch of luxury to a room.
7. Rearrange furniture: Simply rearranging furniture can make a room look more high-end. Experiment with different layouts to find the one that works best.

8. Declutter and organise: Less is more as they say, so decluttering can instantly make it look more luxurious. Get rid of anything you don't need or use, then invest in stylish storage solutions to keep your space organised and clutter-free.

Life Hacks
6 THINGS THAT HAPPY PEOPLE ALWAYS DO

Try a couple of these ideas every week and see your happiness get a boost!
• Practice gratitude: Happy people tend to focus on what they have and express gratitude for it. They appreciate the positive aspects of their life and don't take them for granted.
• Build and maintain positive relationships: Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people will help give you a lift. Happy people prioritise their relationships and invest time and effort in building and maintaining them.
• Engage in activities they enjoy: It’s important to do activities that bring joy and satisfaction. Those at their happiest make time for hobbies and interests that they find fulfilling and rewarding.
Struggling to sleep?
If you’re experiencing sleeping difficulties and have tried a number of solutions without success, it may be time to look at your mattress. Not having the right mattress (or one that is too old) can affect your quality of sleep as well as things like concentration, work ability and even physical pain. The Bed Post is offering a discount of 20% to Life In…Magazines’ readers. See their advert in this month’s issue for more information.
3 hacks to boosting a candle’s life
1. Freeze it! Pop your candle in the freezer a for a couple of hours before you plan to light it – it will slow down the burn time!
2. Add salt: Add salt to melted wax – it will help your candle burn more slowly the next time it is lit.
3. Light it for longer: When lighting your candle for the first time, let it burn for a while (until the whole top wax has melted). Wax has a ‘melt memory’ so will it burn within the circumference of the previous burn.
• Stay present and mindful: Live in the moment and savour the present! If you practice mindfulness and focus on the here and now, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, you’ll be in a better frame of mind.
• Take care of their physical and mental health: Happy people tend to prioritise their health and wellbeing. They make an effort to exercise regularly, eat well and get enough sleep. They also prioritise their mental health by managing stress, practicing self-care and seeking support when needed.
• Maintain a positive outlook: Seeing the good in situations, focusing on solutions rather than problems and maintaining an optimistic attitude even in challenging times will help see you through most of life’s ups and downs and maintain a happy disposition.
How to… be a better friend
1. Be present and listen actively: This is one of the most important things you can do as a friend. Give your friend your full attention when you're together, and take the time to really understand what they're saying.
2. Show empathy and support: Being a good friend means showing empathy and support when your friend is going through a tough time. Be there to listen, offer advice, and provide comfort and encouragement.
3. Be honest and open: Good friends are honest and open with each other. If there's something you need to talk to your friend about, be direct and honest in your communication.
4. Respect your friend's boundaries: Every person has their own set of boundaries and comfort levels, and it's important to respect them. If your friend needs space, give it to them. If they don't want to talk about something, don't push them.

5. Be reliable and dependable: If you make plans with your friend, be sure to follow through. If they need your help or support, be there for them.
6. Celebrate your friend's successes: Being a good friend means celebrating your friend's successes and accomplishments. Whether it's a new job, a personal milestone or another happy event - be there to congratulate them and show your support.

Social care tops Gen Z’s list of dream jobs

A new UK study has found that health and social care is the most popular career choice for students aged between ten and 16. The career path was three times as popular as those wanting to become social media influencers. The Future of Education Report 2023 by online tutoring provider, GoStudent also suggests that the education system is not arming children with essential skills needed to help them navigate the world they live in.
At a time when media messages about young people suggest self-obsession, the report findings reveal a more selfless reality. Despite public sector strikes, a staffing crisis and low pay in some caring professions, it appears that Gen Z is motivated by a desire to make a positive

difference to society, rather than to star on TikTok. Close to three quarters (73%) cite making a difference in the world as important for their future.
Other preferred career choices included the creative industry, sport and leisure, animal care and computing and science.
Despite Prime Minister Rishi Sunak prioritising maths in his January address, parents want to see their children equipped to both make sense of, and better cope with, modern life:
• 91% want to see personal finance on the curriculum
• 84% want to see lessons on the environment
• 82% would like their children to learn mindfulness
• 81% see current affairs as a core skill
Unusual UK laws most people aren't aware of
• It's illegal to beat or shake any carpet or rug in the streets of London after 8am. This law dates back to the 19th century and was designed to prevent the spread of dust and disease.
• It's illegal to handle a salmon in suspicious circumstances. This law dates back to the Salmon Act of 1986 and was intended to prevent the illegal trading of fish.
• It's illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament wearing a suit of armour. This law dates back to the 1313 Statute Forbidding Bearing of Armour.
• It's illegal to be drunk in a pub or bar. The Licensing Act of 1872 makes it illegal to be drunk on licensed premises.
• It's illegal to handle a hedgehog without a license. This law was introduced under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to protect the hedgehog population.
• It's illegal to carry a plank along a pavement. This law is part of the Metropolitan Police Act of 1839 and was designed to prevent damage to the sidewalks.
It's worth noting that many of these laws are rarely enforced or have been modified over time. Nonetheless, they provide an interesting glimpse into the history and traditions of the UK.

Health & Fitness
why you might have had a fitness plateau (& how to overcome it)

Maintaining fitness goals and staying motivated can be difficult to sustain; this may be because you haven’t found an exercise you enjoy or you’re struggling to find the time - whether that’s due to upholding social plans or a hectic work life, it can all have an impact and make it more difficult to maintain a fitness regime. However, as the days become lighter and your body gets some much-needed vitamin D, now is the ideal time to get back into fitness. So, for those who require some extra motivation and a greater understanding of why you might have plateaued, Dean Zweck, product development manager at Total Fitness, shares some insights on common obstacles to fitness and how to overcome them.
Sticking to a routine
No matter what your goals are, maintaining a routine is vital to keep you in check and is an ideal way to monitor your success. Make sure your workouts are convenient to you and fit in around your daily routine, as you only need 150 minutes of physical activity a week to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which is just 20 minutes a day. The best way to form a routine is understanding what time of the day you’re most motivated to move - maybe it’s straight after your alarm goes off or an evening trip to the gym. The most important thing is to ensure it’s a time that suits you. Setting alarms is a fantastic way to hold yourself accountable and a sure-fire way to turn your workout into a habit.
Too much, too soon
Joining the gym is an ideal way to be surrounded by innovative equipment and inspiring individuals. However, that can become overwhelming if you’re not too sure what it is you want from your workouts. It can be fun trying out all the new and exciting equipment, but burning out at the first hurdle won’t help you to reach your fitness goals. It’s best to slowly build up your stamina and incorporate different forms of exercise into your routine. For best results, create a timetable which includes what areas of your body you want to target over the course of a week, to ensure your entire body is receiving a workout and you’re not overdoing it.
You haven’t found the right workout
One reason you might be lacking in motivation could be that you haven’t found a workout that excites you. Exercising shouldn’t be a chore, it should be incorporated into your daily life because you find it fun and motivating. If you can’t get to grips with weights or find the cross-trainer repetitive, why not opt for a boot camp or spin class? Or simply getting outdoors and moving your body is still a great way to keep fit. Walking your furry companion every evening or taking a leisurely walk on your lunch break are
both easy ways to incorporate fitness into your lifestyle. Hitting the gym with a friend or partner is also a great way to stay accountable for your fitness goals.
Fuel your body
Getting the nutrients your body needs is key to making sure you can get through your weekly workout sessions. A balanced diet and eating the right foods are both vital in providing you with the sustenance you need to work out. If you don’t eat the right foods, you are more prone to feeling lethargic and as a result will make it easier to say no to exercise. Aim to eat nutritious foods, with meals which are packed with fibre (fruit and veg), complex carbs, protein and healthy fats. In addition, a pre-workout snack can give you a much-needed energy boost to give you the extra motivation to work out.
5 daily supplements you should consider taking

1. Multivitamins: Multivitamins can provide a range of vitamins and minerals to help fill any nutritional gaps in your diet.
2. Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil supplements, can help support heart health, brain function and joint health.
3. Vitamin D: This is important for bone health, immune function and may help reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases.
4. Probiotics: Help support a healthy gut microbiome, which is important for digestion and immune function.
5. Magnesium: Important for muscle and nerve function, blood pressure regulation and bone health.

Businesses urged to get ready for reforms to cut packaging waste
Consumers will find it easier to recycle their packaging waste once new reforms are put into place for businesses.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging will make firms that supply household packaging responsible for the costs of dealing with packaging waste, moving costs away councils and council taxpayers.
Producers will be required to pay for the collection and disposal costs of household packaging they supply when it becomes waste. This is hoped to encourage them to reduce the amount of packaging they place on the market, and to improve the recyclability of their packaging – in turn ensuring less waste ends up in the natural environment. From now on, all obligated packaging producers in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland must collect information on the amount and type of packaging they have supplied during 2023, with Wales to follow shortly. Producers with a turnover of greater than £2 million and who handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging each year must also report this information to the Environment Agency twice a year. The first reports must be submitted from 1 October 2023.
New UK-France partnership
A new partnership between the UK and French governments has been signed to help both nations make the move towards greater energy security by moving away from fossil fuels and towards renewables and nuclear power.

Under the new deal, the UK and France commit to further cooperation on civil nuclear, to capitalise on both countries ambitions to significantly grow their sectors. The UK has an ambition of up to 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, which could support over 12,000 jobs and unlock over £9 billion in private investment by 2030.
Producers will be required to pay an EPR fee towards the costs of collecting and managing household packaging waste, currently borne by local authorities. This shift of cost is estimated to be around £1.2 billion per year across all local authorities, once EPR is fully operational.
Happy birthday!
The Hub, from local charity Greener and Cleaner, is celebrating its first birthday. What started off as a Facebook group in 2019 has grown and developed into a charity that was making ambitious plans for a new green community hub in The Glades shopping centre, Bromley.
Today, both the registered charity and The Hub, which opened in March 2022, are a reality. The Hub team is kept busy hosting events and workshops for the local community, teaching skills such as mending and upcycling and providing information on energy saving amongst a wide range of other topics.

With a focus on positive actions and solutions people can embed into their everyday lives to make green living the norm, Founder and CEO Parisa Wright enthuses: “No one doubts the need for systemic change, but there is so much we can do on an everyday basis as individuals to reduce our carbon footprint. We’re bringing the community together, empowering everyone to make changes, improving their wellbeing and reducing their cost of living at the same time”.
As The Hub celebrates how far it has come in its first year, Greener and Cleaner invites everyone to come in and chat with a volunteer about how they can start living a little greener, or to try an event or workshop for the first time.

A Final Thought…
Volunteering at Community Fridge
by LOUIS DAVID-HOOPERMy name is Louis, and as a part of my Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Bronze award, I have been volunteering at the Community Fridge at Unity Church on the Ramsden Estate in Orpington for a number of weeks. I am writing this article to highlight the incredible community work from all the volunteers who give up their time, especially Neil, who has coordinated a team of volunteers from its beginning in January 2020.
To provide perspective on the reasons why it was set up and the benefits that both users and volunteers reap each week, I held interviews with Neil, Pat, a user of the Community Fridge, and a fellow volunteer.
In January 2020 Pat saw a notice in a local shop window advertising a new community event at the Unity Church. It began with the gathering and serving of Greggs and Pret sandwiches and some biscuits, but as COVID emerged it grew into what it is today; not just the Fridge, but a huge variety of activities, such as Life Skills and Jobs Clubs and the Warm Space Café.
What Pat liked most about the Community Fridge was the true community feel, friendship and companionship between users and volunteers. These make it not just a place to collect food, but a second home. Pat also mentioned the huge variety of foods that cater for everyone. A phrase Pat used that truly paints the picture of Community Fridge is “you can always find someone who is a helping hand”.
Neil provided valuable insight on why the Community Fridge started. Primarily it was to reduce food waste, help meet food needs and provide a service to the community by creating a hub where local people can come together. He said: “There isn’t going to be a reduction in need, so it is vital to encourage community values instead of isolation”. Community Fridge also helps meet people’s food needs as well as demonstrating how to make their income go further. There is also a community garden and gym on site to encourage overall wellbeing for mental and physical health.
The inaugural distribution in January 2020 came at a perfect time as there
was an increasing need due to COVID restrictions only two months later. Neil then approached other organisations such as FareShare, which collects remaining stock from supermarkets at the end of the day, and where supermarkets and wholesalers donate over-ordered or nearing best before date products via the Felix Project, to the Transform Bromley Borough Food Distribution Hub, which in turn distributes it to around 12 charity food distributors in Bromley.
The Community Fridge distribution began with around 8 to 12 people and has grown to some 40 to 50 people on a typical morning; an incredible feat in a relatively short space of time.
Neil and the team put in a truly admirable number of hours each week, involving 15 collections, unpacking and sorting on Tuesdays and Fridays prior to the distributions on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, when at least ten volunteers set up, serve and clear away.

These mind-blowing efforts have inspired other local churches to set up and develop their own distributions in Orpington, and over the last three years other social activities have developed to create that same sense of community and togetherness.

Fellow volunteer, Ethan, who initially also joined for his DofE award two years ago, continues to volunteer. “Mainly due to the enjoyable and engaging atmosphere which drives me to help the lives of others, and being able to distribute food where it's most needed”. An inspiring message demonstrating the compassion between volunteers and users of the Community Fridge, and a perfect depiction of one of the reasons that caused many of us to begin volunteering - as Unity Church is much more than a place to volunteer for DofE but also a safe environment, a place where you feel at home, somewhere to make new friends, and a food distribution for those who need it most.
