History
by PAM PREEDY, historian & author
Historians believe that timekeeping goes as far back as the Neolithic period. Recent research suggested that Stonehenge (2,500BC) was originally built to track a solar year of 365.25 days. The Sumerians divided the year into 12 lunar months, each comprising 29 or 30 days, giving a total of 354 days. According to legend, Romulus, the founder of Rome, instituted the calendar in about 738 BC, though it is more likely to have evolved from earlier civilisations including the Greek lunar calendar.
The Romans divided their year into ten lunar or ‘moon’ cycles. Hence the name ‘month’. The months were numbered: September (7), October (8), November (9), and December (10). Originally July and August were given their numbers: Quintillus (5) and Sextilis (6), but they were changed to honour the glory of two rulers; Julius Caesar and his nephew, Augustus. Some think that Aprilis (April) means the second (month), others think it comes from the goddess Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, or even ‘to open’ (a bud): it was considered a month of beauty and growth. Maia (May) was the goddess of the growth of plants. Plants were used by the Romans for food, drink, medicine, cosmetics, aromatherapy and even religious worship. Juno (June) was the goddess of love and marriage and June was a popular month for weddings.
For Romulus the New Year came in March, named after his father, Mars the god of war. It was a time for battles to be resumed after the winter months. Numa, the second King, added two months to synchronise the calendar with the lunar year; Januarius (January), named after Janus the god of beginnings and endings and Februum (February), the god of purification, in preparation for the coming of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The previous calendar had comprised six months of 30 days and four months of 31 days giving a total of 304 days. Numa was superstitious of even numbers and wanted all the months to have 29 days. Of the 355 days in his year, the final 57 days were divided between January (29 days) leaving February with 28 days. This was about ten days shorter than a solar year. To keep it synchronised with the seasons a leap month was added normally every two or three years. This was open to abuse from elected officials who could control the length of their term of service simply by adding a leap month.
In 45 B.C. Julius Caesar ordered a calendar consisting of twelve months based on a solar year and eliminating leap months. This calendar included a leap year every four years. The ancient Romans calculated that it took the earth exactly 365.25 days to track round the sun. In fact it is actually 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds (365.2421 days),
an overestimate of a little under one day per century, thus a leap year came every four years without exception.
In 1582 the Julian calendar was replaced by the Pope Gregory XIII calendar who wanted to celebrate Easter on the correct day. It is essentially the calendar we have today, with our twelve months of 28-31 days, the leap year every four years. Also it moved the New Year from March 25th to January 1st. The tax year still runs from the original date of the New Year. This calendar was not popular with Protestant countries: they thought it was part of a plot to return them to the Pope. Gradually countries transferred to the Gregorian calendar. Having been out of synchronisation with other European countries, Britain and her Empire was one of the last but transferred in 1752. The year began on 1st January, but it was necessary to correct it by 11 days: the ‘lost days’. It was decided that Wednesday 2nd September 1752 would be followed by Thursday 14th September 1752. People were unhappy with this and felt they had been robbed of 11 days.
Not everyone was unhappy about the new calendar. According to W.M. Jamieson in his book, ‘Murders Myths and Monuments of North Staffordshire’, there is a tale about one William Willett of Endon. Always keen on a joke, he apparently wagered that he could dance non-stop for 12 days and 12 nights. On the evening of September 2nd 1752, he started to jig around the village and continued all through the night. The next morning, September 14th by the new calendar, he stopped dancing and claimed his bets!
The 7-day week was first found in the Babylonian calendar. It represents the time it takes for the moon to transition between each of its phases, starting and ending at the crescent moon.
The days of the week are a mash-up of many different languages and cultural ideas. Here’s where they got their names!
• Sunday – from the Latin solis, which means “Sun’s Day”
• Monday – from the Latin lunae, which means “Moon’s Day”
• Tuesday – named after Tiw, the Viking god of law
• Wednesday – named after Woden, the Viking god of gods
• Thursday – named after Thor, the Viking god of war
• Friday – named after Frida, the Viking god of love
• Saturday – named after Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture

Tea and coffee to be served in libraries
Tea and coffee will soon be served in libraries as part of a complimentary welcome to library visitors. As library visitor numbers continue to increase following a decline in numbers during the pandemic, tea and coffee will soon be served periodically as part of providing a warm welcome to library visitors. In addition to information signposting, library staff will continue to be on hand to support the range of library users, from people looking to study, conduct business, join in the many activities in the library, borrow books and dvds and generally enjoy all the wonderful facilities the libraries have to offer in the comfort of a warm place this winter.
Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing said, “How we use libraries has changed over the years, with our services continuing to evolve but I am pleased that through all of this, our libraries have continued to provide a warm welcome. The introduction of tea and coffee further enhances the library service and underlines the libraries’ unrivalled position as warm places in our community to work, study and engage in stimulating activities this winter. I want to thank GLL, our library service provider, for their support in seeking to develop and enhance these important community facilities."

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR BROMLEY
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced that Bromley town centre is to become one of the capital’s new Night Time Enterprise Zones with the aim of increasing accessibility to the centre in the evenings.
Bromley hope to use funding from the scheme for projects including later library opening hours and night markets as well as new lighting to make the pedestrianised high street more welcoming.
Councillor Yvonne Bear, Bromley’s Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing said, “I am absolutely delighted that Bromley has been selected to become a new Night Time Enterprise Zone. Bromley Town has long acted as a central hub for our residents due to its extensive retail and entertainment offerings and following the pandemic, demand for things to do locally has been increasing, giving us a golden opportunity”.
and Museums for Bromley said, “Libraries are here to serve all people of all ages and at all stages of life, where people seek out information both for leisure and pleasure reasons but also in difficult situations as well. The introduction of tea and coffee is very much part of our thinking, not just in the winter period but hopefully beyond this too, that when you visit a library, you will receive a warm welcome.”
Statistics show that over 95% of borough residents live within 1.5 miles of a library. A full list of the locations of libraries across the Borough can be found on the Council’s website. To find out what’s on in Bromley’s libraries, visit the Better website www.better.org.uk.

A NEW MOVE FOR BROMLEY COUNCIL?
The Executive Committee’s decision agreed in principle to purchase the modern purpose-built office accommodation at Churchill Court, currently the home of Direct Line Group. The move is projected to save currently an estimated £17 million taking into account the saving from not undertaking refurbishments works at the exiting civic centre site combined with the disposal receipt which would be generated from the sale of the Civic Centre site. There is also potential for reduced running and energy costs and providing a future income stream in rent from other organisations. As part of the negotiations, discussions with Direct Line Group include leasing back a section of the building for their Bromley office.
Councillor Colin Smith, Leader of Bromley Council, said: “Whilst leaving our current home is a real wrench and tinged with considerable sadness for those of us who have been there a while, this move is of its time given the well-publicised pressures on
local governments' finances and the opportunities it presents in terms of integrating our services more efficiently. At a time when intense funding pressures facing the Council continue to build, we remain absolutely determined to continue providing first class services to Bromley residents and this decision will feature prominently in helping us to deliver that ambition.”
The proposed purchase of Direct Line Group’s offices, which remains subject to contract, would support a modern and efficient style of working and support the Council’s financial position. It is envisaged that the proposal would see the council relocating in the early part of 2024, with the proposal subject to ratification at the next Council meeting.
The greenspace around the Civic Centre would continue to be accessible to park visitors, with the anticipated proceeds of the sale of the buildings helping fund the purchase of the new HQ site.
Shoppers beware!
Ten courts will be refurbished across four sites in Bromley as part of efforts to get more residents of all ages playing tennis by improving access to better facilities.
The initiative will mean more residents can book well maintained tennis courts and access affordable coaching and tennis activity in Bromley. This is hoped to encourage more residents to join in as improved courts are delivered in Church House Gardens, Coney Hall Recreation Ground, Goddington Park and Poverest Park. The initiative is being delivered in partnership with grant funders the LTA and will also see some free access to tennis provided on all sites at set times, including a ‘Parkrun for tennis’ type offer at selected venues.
One of our readers has asked us to remind you all to be very careful when out shopping in the area. Keep a careful eye on your handbags and purses, especially if you often put them in your shopping trolley which makes them vulnerable to thieves. There has also been a report of someone trying to reach over the top of a toilet door to try and steal a bag from the hook on the back of the door, so please be vigilant when you are out shopping or looking for January bargains.

Alex sadly passed away from Chordoma cancer on 3rd November 2022 aged 15. I want to raise funds to get Alex a bench next to her grave so we could sit close to her. It would mean so much to me and her family. The cost of the bench is £820. If anyone can help, the funding link is https://gofund.me/2564fc2a

New Biggin Hill facility to create over 100 jobs
London Biggin Hill Airport has confirmed that Bombardier, a world leading manufacturer of business jets, celebrated the opening of its new service facility at the airport recently. The expansion of the Canadian manufacturer’s European presence at London Biggin Hill will create more than 100 new jobs by the end of 2023. The Bromley-based airport is focussed on becoming a world-class business aviation centre of excellence in manufacturing and engineering. This includes investing in the airport estate and infrastructure to create job opportunities for Bromley residents, training opportunities for local young people and providing an economic boost to the region.
This month’s local author is Annabel Lovick, whose first novel, The Other Half of Me, tells of one family’s journey through heartbreak. The story depicts an idyllic family life, ripped apart by betrayal, forcing Sophie, the main character, on an emotional rollercoaster, returning her to her hometown of Bromford. Uplifting and therapeutic, Sophie finds out that sometimes the dreams that come true are the dreams you never knew you had.
Says Annabel, “My aim was to create an inspirational story, exploring the emotional overwhelm of heartbreak. There is always a way forward, but it takes courage and will to succeed and to demonstrate to our children what a good divorce looks like! It was inspired by my own story and as a Divorce and Breakup Recovery Coach – it feeds in perfectly to what I teach my clients on their journeys!”

5 Minutes With…
Neill Tully
Neill is the Mayoral Attendant and Mace-bearer for the Bromley borough. He’s a former police officer, having received a Queen's Police Medal (QPM), and is also a toastmaster and MC.
Q: Neill – it seems you lead a very busy life –what keeps you on your toes and where do you get the energy?
That was my parents. They both lived very long lives and stayed active, healthy and busy right to their very end. It is just a way of life for me. As for 'on my toes'...Have you met my wife?
Q: As the Mayoral Attendant and Macebearer, can you outline what your responsibilities are? I am responsible for the Mayor's safety and wellbeing at all of her engagements. I drive the Mayoral car and make sure the Mayor arrives at the destination with as much precision timing as possible. I ensure that all the protocols are observed and adhered to and that all the proper etiquette is in place. As for the mace, it is my honour to be Bromley’s mace-bearer. It is carried and processed in all big ceremonial occasions.
Q: How did you come to be the Mayoral Attendant?
I am a former police officer of 30 years. Six months before I retired (at 55... too young to do nothing), I started looking to see what sort of jobs were out there. The attendant’s job was advertised on the LBB website and it sounded perfect. To my delight, I was not only interviewed, but offered the job!
Q: So what does a typical day look like? No such thing as a typical day. The engagements are extremely varied. But I do get to go to some great places on and off the borough, even overseas.
Q: What have been some of your most memorable moments working alongside The Mayor and Deputy Mayor?
There are many. Visiting all the Jubilee parties last year was fun and carrying the Bromley mace into Westminster Abbey each year is an honour. But I suppose, travelling to Shanghai, China, accompanying school exchange visits will take some beating.
I believe that young people are often given a bad press and, in 2001, I set up Bromley’s Volunteer Police Cadet unit. I began guiding young people on the right path, therefore engendering good citizenship. The unit grew from 14 to over 150 cadets and my work was recognised as I approached retirement in 2017. The QPM was for 'Services to youth engagement'. Having my wife, daughter and mum with me when my QPM was presented at Buckingham Palace by Prince William was one of my proudest moments. Mum (then 93) was a true Royalist and was more excited than I was.
Q: You’re also a toastmaster and MC – how did that come about and what sort of events do you cover?
Mayoral duties naturally lend themselves to being a Toastmaster and seemed to be a natural progression. Announcing at weddings, civic events, charity functions and general public speaking comes very natural to me. See toastmasterneill.co.uk
Q: You can be hired as a singer for Frank Sinatra songs – have you always wanted to do this? I grew up listening to Sinatra, Bing, Nat King Cole, etc - in my opinion, the best genre! I got into singing by accident. In 2015, I played guitar in a band and we did an a OAP Christmas party. The lead singer didn't turn up so I had to step in. The band split up, but I've been going back there solo every year since. I do weddings and parties but I mainly do care homes, dementia cafes, hospices, etc, for which I never charge. See quitefranklysings.com
Q: Apart from all your other interests, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I run, I love hillwalking and I occasionally take my kayak on the sea to fish for a nice bit of Sea Bass.
Q: Who has been your inspiration? Without a second thought, my wife Beverley. She has been the wind beneath my wings and my absolute soul mate. We've been together for 27 years.
Q: What do you most enjoy about living in the Bromley borough?
Bromley has been my home all my life. It’s such a green and open borough. I can also say, from an insider’s perspective, it has a fabulously well run council too.
In the second half of my police career
I was on the Youth Affairs Unit dealing with youth crime.
Q: What does community mean to you?
The very nature of a 'civilised' society is that we all look after each other and communicate with each other. That's what a good community does.

Local Heroes...
Jill Thomas
Peter Li nominated Jill Thomas as a local hero for the contribution she makes as a volunteer fundraising officer. Peter said: “Jill has been a member of Bromley Lions club for about 13 years, she is a tireless volunteer who is currently our fundraising officer which means she organises and runs most of our events that bring in donations which we distribute primarily to charities and individuals in Bromley borough.”
Q: Congratulations on the nomination Jill! How does it feel to be nominated as a local hero by Peter?
I am surprised and honoured to have been nominated. Being part of Bromley Lions Club CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) is like working with friends whilst helping others, who just need a bit of help as we all have done at some point.
Q: Can you provide a bit of background about how you became involved in the work you do?
I joined the Bromley Lions Club in 2009 after attending one of their Quiz nights a friend was running. I liked the group because they were so friendly and I thought the Club’s primary ethos – to raise funds from the Bromley public to distribute amongst and aid the sick and disadvantaged within the Borough – was a laudable objective.
Q: What do you particularly love about your job? As well as being a Trustee of the CIO, and therefore approving grants and donations to local organisations and people, I am the fundraising organiser which means I propose fundraising events to the Club members and, if approved, I then arrange and organise them. As well as our regular monthly Quiz Nights at venues around the Borough we also have Lucky Dip stalls at local village events, collections at local stations and supermarkets, and various social events. The funds raised are then mainly distributed to local frontline charities or to assist individuals in need.
Q: What does a typical working day for you look like?
Days are busier when we have an event imminent, I will be checking emails from people who wish to attend and making sure everything is prepared.
Q: Have you been involved in anything else community-related locally?
When asked we have joined with local groups like Rotary Clubs and other Charities i.e. fundraising and supporting of Ukrainian refugees, marshalling at local fun runs, car shows and firework displays to name a few. We have also provided a number of local schools with packets of seeds for the children to plant, watching them grow and observing the wildlife living and working within these areas.
Q: What does community mean to you? It is important to keep the place you work and live in
comfortable for as many as possible. Having pride in where you live and taking part in events helps build a community. The stronger the community the safer the area will be for your family.
Q: What’s new on the horizon? We have recently developed a much stronger social media presence in an effort to get the Lions message across to more people. We would like to increase the Club membership so that we can become involved in more community activities.
Q: What do you most enjoy about living in the Bromley borough?
It is a green Borough close to countryside/parks and yet very convenient for the bright lights of London, the transport links are generally very good in all directions and I enjoy the suburban family vibe that permeates the area.
Q: What message would you like to give people reading this?
A lot of associations such as ourselves frequently complain that their membership is gradually ageing, we would love to see more Generation X volunteers to reverse this trend! But, more seriously, if any of our regular event supporters are reading this may I just say that without you being prepared to come along to our events and part with your money we would have no reason to exist so we are very grateful for your support over the years. We have an evening meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at the Two Doves Pub Oakley Rd, Bromley BR2 8HD and you can find us on Facebook.

New Year, New You
To see in the New Year, we’ve compiled a special pull-out-and-keep guide on how to put your best foot forward in 2023 – from your health and fitness goals to beauty and mindset. Here’s to you!
BEYOND DETOX
by CRISTIANA SANNA, The Detox Master
Overindulged during the festive holidays and now feeling a bit lethargic? Don’t worry. It happens to the best of us. Unfortunately, these fun times often encourage us to abandon our good dietary habits. And the problem isn’t just gaining weight. What most people don’t realise is that overindulging can overload the body with toxins. And unless we go back into healthy habits and lifestyles after the New Year, we will drag the excess toxins with us into the next holiday season, where even more will accumulate.
Types of toxins
It's important to understand that there are different types of toxins. Some are easy to identify, like junk food, alcohol, cigarettes, air pollution, heavy metals and BPA (a chemical found in some plastic products). Others tend to get overlooked since we don’t necessarily think of them as toxins. Examples are body fat, radiation and EMF (Electro Magnetic Field), sleep deprivation, stress and anxiety. We’re also faced with emotional and energetic toxins like being in a toxic relationship or negative thoughts. We are constantly bombarded with toxins, and luckily our bodies can release many of them through natural physiological processes like urination, sweating, breathing and thinking. Problems can arise when the organs are overloaded or don’t work as they should. The result is a build-up which could cause an array of issues.
Signs of toxin build-up
For example perhaps you're now feeling fatigued, anxious or struggling to sleep among other issues. If we don’t help our bodies to eliminate these accumulated toxins, we might end up in a chronically toxic state which could lead to a range of far more serious conditions.
So what’s the solution?
The first and most important action we can take is to start with what we eat and drink. Eating organic and drinking good-quality water is the first step in relieving the body from toxicity. Then, we might want to avoid using chemical cleaning products around the house. Nowadays, there are so many natural alternatives that it is easy to swap. We might want to invest in a good air purifier for the home or add air-cleaning plants or crystals, adding some nice vibes to your home as a secondary effect. Reducing contact with toxic people is the next big step.
We can’t avoid toxins completely, but what we can do is help our main detoxification organs function at their best by regularly (and gently) detoxing them. And let’s not forget the need to detoxify our emotional and spiritual energy. After my own personal experience, I would suggest seeking the help of a qualified practitioner. A professional can evaluate if we are ‘fit’ for detox because there are some conditions where a cleanse can be counterproductive, and it can sometimes be overwhelming without the guidance of an expert.

4 actionable ways to become truly confident
by DIANA ROBERTSON, Toastmasters International
Many of us lack confidence. However, as I know from experience, we can change this.
Find the areas in which you are already confident The most important step towards building confidence is to be aware of what you have already been successfully doing in your life. You may be a talented artist or a good parent or friend. Note down anything that comes to mind because everything you are good at counts. What this will reveal is that confidence is not absolute. Nobody is fully confident about everything.
Change your negative thoughts with positive statements
To start reprogramming your mind repeat encouraging affirmations before facing challenging situations. Try the opposite of your negative thought e.g. change “I’m terrified of being asked to share my opinion on a work Zoom call”, to “I’m so excited to share my opinion on the call!”. You may initially prefer using softer opening statements. You could affirm “I can be very good at sharing useful ideas”. What’s most important is to create and repeat affirmations which make you feel better about yourself.
Question your negative thoughts
By answering the following questions, you’ll find fears hidden behind your lack of confidence and learn how to transform destructive thought patterns into constructive ones.
1. How can I describe the exact negative thoughts on this particular subject in only one sentence?
2. Is this thought 100% true? Is it a fact or simply my assumption?
3. What proves that this negative thought is completely or partially false?
4. If the event that what I most fear were to happen, how would it truly affect my life? What would I do (realistically and without exaggeration)?
5. If my best friend had this exact thought, what would I tell them?
Take the long view
Sometimes projects don’t go according to plan. If you fail at something, remind yourself that the key to becoming better at anything is to shift your focus onto your progress over longer periods rather than holding on to the setbacks. And remember to celebrate each small achievement along the way!
7 morning ritual tips to help you reconnect with your purpose
by Shayoon and Alexander Mendeluk
1. Stop the scroll, switch off screens at least one hour before bed – Your morning ritual starts the night before. Disconnect from content, programming and media to allow yourself to come into a relaxed state. Switch on “do not disturb” so you can turn off any unnecessary distractions to get a deep and restful sleep.
2. Avoid screens in the morning – Take time to check in with yourself before you check in with the rest of the world. This is your time to come into yourself and welcome the new day.
3. Make yourself a cup of tea – The process of making tea is a part of the ritual itself, so take your time. Try brewing a blend of lemon, hot water and fresh ginger. The goal is to activate your nervous system and kick start your metabolism. Sip slowly and savour the moment to awaken your senses
4. Perform light movements – Get your body moving by going for a walk, doing some light stretches or yoga. The whole point is to awaken your body as you prepare for the day.
5. Meditate – Unplug to recharge by resting into a short morning meditation to set an intention for the day. This will help ease stress and anxiety while providing focus and clarity to carry you through the day.
6. Plan your day – Jot down a list of your top priorities. Focus on three to four core tasks to help you maximise your productivity. Stay away from work for work’s sake by compartmentalising these key to-do's.
7. Go after your day with love and light – Embrace your day from this focused and centred space. Create from a place of love and light and flow with whatever life brings you.
22 Life in... Orpington January 2023 lifeinmagazines.co.uk
Your mission this month… (should you choose to accept it) Increase your intake of brightly coloured fruit and veg to help boost your immune system. A recent German study found that healthcare workers who consumed more fruit and vegetables had 20% fewer colds.
Bromley’s The Extensionist has created a new type of hair extensions called ULTRA BONDS...tiny hair extensions that have been popular with a number of celebrities including Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. We tried them out to give you the lowdown…
Ultra what? Ultra bonds are hair extensions that have strands so tiny the bond is almost invisible. They are applied meticulously, strand by strand, using a bespoke micro extension fusion machine specifically designed for the application of the tiny bonds. Clients can reuse the bonds, offering a big money saver – only payment for reapplication is needed every 3-4 months. The hair is Slavic and European natural hair, available in 30-plus colours and from 14'' to 30'' inches.
How? A colour match is given to ensure the hair looks natural and clients can decide on the length. Application depends on the amount of hair, but it varies between an hour and a half and two hours.
Your need to know: You can colour your hair but you can’t use oil products or conditioner (only on hair tips). After washing, hair needs to be dried as the roots can become prone to matting. You should also use a tangle teaser and the hair needs to be brushed regularly. Hair can be straightened or curled as normal.
How much? It depends on the amount of hair used and the length, but expect to pay from £385. Half head refit
is £170 and a full head is £250 (or £350 just using keratin bonds).
Our experience: We opted for a mix of ultra bonds and tapes and found them great for making hair appear thicker. It took a while getting used to drying and styling hair after every wash, but the results are worth it.
To book or for more information call 020 7223 9922 or WhatsApp 07387-117144. Email: info@theextentionist. com or see theextensionist.com

Stay healthy & pain-free with a body MOT pull-out-and-keep
by CHRISTOPHE CHAMPS, founder of PODO Clinic and Workshop
Physical activity can help you build a strong and healthy body, or it can cause damage, and this depends on the quality of your alignment, balance, and postures (standing, sitting, and sleeping). So, it is essential to ensure that the body is aligned and in balance – a body MOT could make a huge difference to your life.
An expert in biomechanics can take an overall look at your structure, your posture, and your movement. From there, they can recommend any treatment plan you may need and/or what other type of expert may be best for your personal circumstances. For example, you may need orthotics and then an exercise plan with a trainer, or regular physiotherapy or IDD (Intervertebral Differential Dynamics) Therapy, or perhaps Pilates or yoga might be best for you, or cranial osteopathy. There are lots of options and by getting your body assessed you can then focus your treatment with the correct professional.
Why have a body MOT?
A body MOT will help you adopt a clinical and logical approach, guided by a medical practitioner with a better expertise and experience than the world-wide-web. Every clinic has its own philosophy and therapeutic arsenal. At PODO for example, we work from—and on— the feet (the body anchor and a quarter of the skeleton) up to the neck, looking at the entire body while referring you to other techniques and therapies when needed. Communication with patients and referrers is ongoing to make sure the patient understands how their body can work better and is able to take steps to get there. Everyone can benefit from a body MOT because preventive measures, compared to curative ones, make patients save
time, pain, and money. Plus, by investing in your health to make your body work better you will likely also improve your quality of life and treat yourself to a brighter future.
Limits of a body MOT?
Your structural factors can’t be changed. You’ve got to work around them. The skeleton and its 224 bones are connected by the ligaments. The elasticity of your ligaments will define whether you are stiff, mobile, hypermobile, or somewhere in between.
Postural factors are the ones that can be changed. From an untracking kneecap or foot overpronation to anterior pelvic tilt, obesity, or poor flexibility, your practitioner will ask you to make changes to your lifestyle and general diet. These will help to solve the issues and ensure long term health.
Remember, our bodies are not fixed, they change over time, and these changes influence the health of our body and our movements. At any stage of life you can benefit from a body MOT.

Happy New Year to you! I hope you had a fantastic festive season. It feels as though I was celebrating for most of December!
I started off by helping switch on Christmas lights in both Hayes and West Wickham, and sang my heart out at the Big Christmas Sing at St Francis of Assisi Church and Carols in the Park at Alexandra Recreation Ground. I joined the children at Bullers Wood School for a tasty Christmas lunch and supported a fine collection of motorbike-riding Father Christmases at the Bromley Children and Families Voluntary Sector Forum Annual Santa Run.
I was lucky enough to be invited to see the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree lights switched on and I even got to cut down my own Christmas tree at the Magic of Foresters organic Christmas tree nursery. I spent December celebrating with everyone from the Salvation Army to the Bromley Valley Gymnastics Centre and it was wonderful.
There was more celebration at the end of November as I joined two of the borough’s restaurants, Shampan at the Spinning Wheel and Copper Ceylon, at the British Curry Awards. They both won their respective categories!
There were openings too. On an industrial scale, I helped mark the opening of the new Bombardier service centre at Biggin Hill Airport. On a more local level I had tremendous fun at new family arcade VR N3XT.
With so many events to attend, the Deputy Mayor and I thought it incredibly important to refresh our first aid knowledge. Thanks to Sam Jones from First Aid 4 All, we can feel confident helping to save a life if we need to. As such, we also took the step of registering ourselves as London Lifesavers for the London Ambulance Service.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at our night of classic movie themes in December. I had a marvellous evening, and it was wonderful to create another event where we could bring the community together and raise much needed funds for charities Everybreath and the Bromley Care Leavers Come Dine With Us project.
Here’s looking forward to more wonderful events in 2023. Cllr Hannah Gray Mayor of Bromley (2022-23)
Lines from Linda
It’s the month when everything seems so dark and the nights so short. I remember a January, many years back, when everything, for me, was a lot brighter. Orange actually, yes - bright orange.
It started toward the end of a six week-long panto season. Pantomimes are gruelling work as one performs twice, sometimes three times a day, six days a week. Add to that, Christmas shopping, new year celebrations, and bad weather, and performers get very weary toward the end of the season.
This particular year I had made my mind up to stay, and look, healthy, so I decided to invest in some vitamins and maybe a sunbed or two. Off I went to have a sunbed, and then I went to a stall in the local market and saw carrot juice on special offer. Good allround vitamins I thought, as I paid for my bumper pack of six cartons. I immediately drank a whole carton, the next day the same, and then, same again the third day. The three sunbeds had already turned me a little tan, and yes, my eyes were brighter. I was pleased, until the lighting man at the theatre asked me what was wrong with my skin, he went on to explain he now had to use different lighting for when I appeared in the sand-scene outside Aladdin’s cave, as he said I was blending in with the sand. That got me worried. I immediately looked in the mirror, and noticed instead of my usual pale skin, my complexion
"
was indeed turning a tone of orange
Worse was to come, I had an audition the next day. I was up for a very ill patient in a hospital television show and had instructions to go to the audition without any make-up. The director stared at me. ‘I asked you not to wear make-up,’ he said.
‘I’m not,’ I said apologetically. ‘I’m afraid I have drunk a lot of carrot juice.’
There was a silence, while he took that in, and then he said, ‘We are auditioning for a hospital series not Roger Rabbit.’
I immediately looked in the mirror, and noticed instead of my usual pale skin, my complexion was indeed turning a tone of orange.
The casting director flicked me a not pleased with you, look. And of course, I knew I hadn’t got the part.
I leaned against the post by the crossing outside the studios feeling very upset, but when I realised it was a traffic light, I quickly jumped away for fear of any cars mistaking me for an amber light which could cause a traffic jam.
I learned not long after that this carrot juice had been taken off the market, as some people had a bad reaction, some with their skin glowing the colour of a carrot! I was glad I have a pet dog and not a pet rabbit - that could have been a lot more of a problem.

How does working from home affect your mortgage?
by CLAIRE FLYNN, money.co.uk
The Office for National Statistics has revealed that homeworking in the UK more than doubled between 2019 and 2022, from 4.7 million to 9.9 million. While working from home has its benefits, the effects it could have on your mortgage aren’t often talked about.
The first thing you need to do is notify your mortgage lender. If not, you risk breaching the terms of your contract, with some lenders prohibiting business use as part of the terms and conditions. In the worst-case scenario this could result in you having to repay the whole mortgage immediately. However, in most cases homeowners are simply doing their regular job from home. If that’s the case, and you’re just at a computer, then it’s unlikely this will cause a problem and your lender will probably allow you to continue with your residential mortgage.
You’re much more likely to need to make a change if a significant portion of your property is being used for business purposes. This could be the case if you sell products and have stock on the premises, or run a photography studio
from your residence, among other things. Generally speaking, if more than 40% of the property is used for work purpose most mortgage lenders will look to implement a commercial mortgage rate.
Commercial mortgage rates are more expensive than residential ones as the lender is deemed to be taking on a greater risk, with the possibility of the business owner going bankrupt, for example. Another option that’s applicable to some is the semi-commercial mortgage rate. These are used for properties that include commercial and residential characteristics. Examples include shops with a property on top or pubs that have a living space attached. In order to get a semi-commercial mortgage rate, you’ll need to contact a commercial mortgage lender rather than a residential provider.

The Bromley Business Network was set up in 2019 with four founding members. This month we chat with Chas Jordan from Fair Contract Associates...
Q1: What first attracted you into becoming a founding member of BBN?
The then current network meeting was closing and the football club asked if I would run a meeting for them. We already had a core of people who attended the meetings and it seemed the right thing to do to keep the group together. However, running a group is not just turning up on the day and going home afterwards, so David Spragg offered to help keep the meeting going and once we had Susan Wright and Helen Paul on board, I was sure we had the makings of a successful group.
Q2: What’s your role – and some of your regular duties?
My role is primarily to host the meeting, or as someone put it recently, I “run the front end” of the meetings. I am the person attendees see and hear, but believe me there is a fabulously supportive group behind the scenes. I also oversee contacts with suppliers, etc and a fair part of my alternate Tuesdays are taken preparing the meeting and finalising the running order for the next day’s meeting.
Q3: Did you envisage BBN becoming as successful as it is today?
We decided at the beginning that the meetings would be focussed on what the attendees wanted, no silly rules or regulations, no lock outs, everyone is welcome, be that in the room or via a Zoom link on the day. Not demanding
any joining fees or annual membership fees either, it seems people prefer the freedom to choose. The group is very supportive of each other and look out for each other’s needs. Personally, I couldn’t ask for anything more. When I look around the meeting room and see people actively engaging with smiles on their faces, meeting after meeting, I know we have found the formula for success.
Q4: What makes a great networking event? Bringing together genuine like-minded people who want to work and do business with genuine people, and believe me, if you are not genuine in what you say and do at a networking event, you will soon be found out and your credibility goes out of the window. Knowing you can trust the people in the group is a big plus but knowing those people also have your back in turbulent times, is priceless.
Q5: When you’re not busy working or helping organise BBN, what do you get up to in your spare time? Family and friends are a very important part of my life and take up most of my spare time, My wife and I are often away exploring UK towns and villages. Having met me, you will realise the gym holds no fascination for me whatsoever. However, a walk along a beach on a spring or autumn day, or a stroll by a river in some distant town or village with the odd pint or two thrown in works for me.

10 MEDICAL CONDITIONS THAT COULD VOID YOUR CAR INSURANCE
Drivers have been told to inform the DVLA if they suffer from a medical condition that could prevent them from getting behind the wheel. Experts from Quotezone.co.uk have identified ten conditions that could prevent motorists from legally taking to the road or invalidate their insurance – leaving them unprotected in the case of an accident. The penalties for not declaring a medical condition can include a £1,000 fine and the risk of prosecution if the driver is involved in an accident, yet some motorists may be unsure of what exactly precludes them from driving.
1. Diabetes
Diabetes can lead to further complications including hypoglycaemia, which can result in drowsiness and blurred vision. It may not lead to a driving licence being revoked, but the DVLA do need to be informed, especially if the diabetes diagnosis is extremely serious.
2. Sleep apnoea
Extreme fatigue can lead to drivers losing concentration on the roads. Conditions including sleep apnoea, where breathing stops and starts during sleep, as well as other illnesses affecting fatigue and in turn driving ability, must be reported to the DVLA.
3. Heart conditions
Any heart conditions must be reported to the DVLA. For example, arrythmia must be reported as it can affect the ability to safely stop a car, and can be distracting.
4. Eye conditions
Most eye conditions, such as Glaucoma, must be reported to the DVLA, and it is up to their discretion what procedure to carry out regarding your licence.
5. Stroke
After having a stroke it is possible that you may be able to
Think ahead!
With bank holidays falling on Friday 7th and Monday 10th April 2023, you can turn four days of annual leave into ten, including weekends. Block out 3rd-6th April ahead of your colleagues and secure a sensational escape. There are also bank holidays in May and August, which are perfect for some long weekends away. drive again in the future, but initially you must stop driving for one month after having a stroke. If you have returned back to normal health after a month, you can start driving again, however the DVLA needs to be informed if health problems still persist for longer than a month after the stroke.
6. Seizures and epilepsy
If you have had a seizure whilst awake and lost consciousness, your licence will be taken away. You can reapply if you go six months without a seizure and medical advisors have given their input. If a seizure happened in other instances, such as while you were asleep, you may be able to retain your licence depending on DVLA and government guidelines.
7. Vertigo
Recurrent or sudden dizziness must be reported to the DVLA.
8. Syncope
Syncope is a condition that causes a temporary loss of consciousness. Fainting conditions including syncope, which causes blackouts, must be reported to the DVLA.
9. Certain operations
Operations on certain body parts, including your legs, can prevent you from driving, yet this can be up to the discretion of the doctor, who should inform you on driving procedures after leaving the hospital.
10. Driving on medications
If you are on strong medications, it is likely that you will be recommended to avoid driving. Opioid painkillers, tranquillisers, and certain antidepressants are examples of medicines that can affect driving ability – don’t drive if you are on medications that cause drowsiness or say ‘do not operate heavy machinery’
Thanks to an extra £300 million investment in the Probation Service over the last two years, a further 1,500 trainee probation officers will be taken on in 2022-23, keeping our streets safer and preventing future crime.

SAVE MONEY ON TECH & COMPUTING
With the cost of living crisis putting a huge strain on household budgets, non-essential expensive purchases are likely to be put on hold. But sometimes when an essential bit of electronic kit goes wrong, finding a fix or an alternative can’t wait. Which? has put together some tips that could help save you some money….
Watch the sales: Shop around for the best price, as sometimes sale prices can be misleading. A ‘sale’ price can just be a product’s normal price at other times of the year. If you know there’s a sale coming up, it’s worth checking the price of the device prior to the sale, to ensure it’s a genuine bargain. If shopping on Amazon, you can use website camelcamelcamel to check price history.
NAVI KING OF POP
Consider refurbished: A refurbished or reconditioned laptop has usually been professionally restored by a manufacturer or retailer to the closest it can get to ‘as new’ condition; they usually come with warranties too. Refurbished laptops and phones are sometimes hundreds of pounds cheaper than buying new, but check if the device is still supported by vital security updates.
Trade-in devices: You might be able to trade in old devices for money off a purchase. For example, Apple offers to take old devices and swap them for credit towards new purchases or an Apple Store Gift Card to be used at any time. Samsung also has a trade-in scheme for mobiles, tablets, wearables and occasionally other devices, too.
NEW ON THE MARKET
Check for student deals: Students can often bag discounts on laptops, especially at the start of the educational year. Microsoft and Apple both offer 10% off for students as well as other exclusive perks. Dell and Samsung offer up to 25%. It’s also worth checking other retailers who might run their own limited-time student deals.
Check the price of HP products: HP laptops are found in nearly every laptop retailer, but most of the ‘deals’ you’ll find are at Currys, with dozens of models available. Most HP laptops go on sale at a higher price, then are discounted by at least £100 after around a month. HP also sells directly through its website, so it’s always worth checking for discounts and voucher codes to see if this works out cheaper.
Think about the features: It isn’t always necessary to spend a fortune on a laptop, especially if it is only for dayto-day use. Which? found decent models for £200 or less, good value if they’re only going to be used for browsing the internet and light note-taking. Cheaper laptops usually come with 4GB of Ram, which will be enough for some. Certain features and extras can also add to the cost of a new laptop. For example, it often isn’t necessary to pay extra for more than 8GB of Ram. As many people now back up files and photos to the cloud, it might not be worth buying a laptop with massive storage potential. You save money by picking a laptop with less internal storage and utilise free cloud storage instead.
1MORE’s first Bluetooth ANC headphones, the SonoFlow, has launched to offer highresolution wireless audio and support for LDAC that can transmit three times more data than conventional Bluetooth audio. Other highlights include an ultra-long playtime of 70-hours and the ability to fast charge the headphones in five minutes to gain five hours of continuous playback. The SonoFlow headphones can be purchased via the 1More website or found on Amazon – at the time of writing for just under £70.
As far as global carbon emissions go, flying is one of the most harmful ways you can travel. But a potential solution could come from the most unlikely source: paper. Researchers at Washington State University, the University of Dayton and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the US have developed a biofuel using paper industry by-product lignin that they say delivers higher performance and fuel efficiency with fewer emissions and lower costs than conventional fuel.
The researchers found that the new biofuel offered higher density and lower emissions than conventional jet fuel, while retaining the ability to swell the rings used to seal metal joints in engines. Since lignin is one of the most abundant materials on Earth, this could be a huge step forward in the switch from fossil fuel to biofuel for the airline industry.

Can dogs eat a vegan diet?
Domestic dogs are omnivores, just like their humans. They’ve evolved over many thousands of years to digest plant-based foods and receive all the nutrients they need without meat. But how? Sometime between 15,000 and 40,000 years ago, wolves started venturing closer to the campfire and began to offer humans protection and help with hunting in return for tasty food scraps. From that point on, early dogs and their humans evolved and adapted together. They even shared similar foods, the dogs noshing on the humans’ leftovers, mostly beans and grains at the bottom of the stew pot or stale bread crusts, meat being a rare luxury back then. Today our pet dogs not only look different to wolves, but their inner biology is different too.
Inside their bodies, dogs make 30 times more amylase than wolves, an enzyme that helps them to digest the starches in plants. Dogs can also make maltase, another enzyme needed for starch digestion, only found in herbivores and omnivores. All this means that our four-legged friends are no longer strict carnivores: they have important genetic mutations which mean they’ll give a paw for anything delicious, including vegetables! Try PACK dog food which is rich in iron and fibre and leaves unnatural nasties out of its meals. See thepackpet.com

SYRUPY ORANGE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE
by HOLLY TAYLOR, Chef at Kindling Restaurant, Brighton
For the oranges
• 2-3 thinly sliced oranges or blood orange
• 200g sugar
• 120ml water
• Put the sugar and water in a large saucepan set over a medium heat
• Stir to dissolve the sugar.
• Add the orange slices (minus any seeds) and bring to a gentle simmer.
• Once the rinds are beginning to turn translucent, remove from the heat and allow to cool.
• Then layer the syrupy oranges in a pattern of your choice at the bottom of your cake tin.
For the cake
• 250g butter, softened
• 250g caster sugar
• ½ tsp of concentrated almond extract
• 2-3 tbsp of poppy seeds (these are optional but they add a nice flavour and texture)
• 5 small eggs (or four very large ones), at room temperature
• 150g gluten-free self-raising flour (you can also use normal wheat-based self-raising flour)
• 150g ground almonds
• 2 tsp of baking powder
• 30g whole milk (2 tbsp)
A shift towards plant-based diets is considered necessary to tackle current environmental challenges. Additionally, a vegan diet can be a cheaper option in high-income countries such as the UK. But before embarking on a meat-free journey, think about protein, which plays a lead role in the creation and maintenance of every single cell in our bodies. It also controls hunger, helps keep blood sugar levels stable and is used in the regulation of hormones. Traditionally, meat has been considered the go-to for fulfilling our protein needs because it contains the nine essential amino acids forming what is known as a “complete protein”. But excluding meat and dairy need not be a problem.
There are plant-based foods containing complete proteins—including soy, quinoa, hemp and chia—but you don’t need to consume all nine amino acids in one sitting. Your liver will store amino acids. So, by eating a combination of plant-based proteins throughout the day you can easily consume all the amino acids you need. Brown or white rice combined with beans or lentils produces a complete protein – think chilli and rice, or
To make the cake
1. Preheat your oven to 160C / Gas Mark 3 and line an 8inch / 20cm round cake tin with baking parchment.
2. First, cream together your butter and sugar using a stand mixer or electric whisk.
3. When the mixture is pale and fluffy add in the poppy seeds and almond extract, then beat in your eggs one at a time
4. Sift together your self-raising flour, ground almonds and baking powder. Fold these dry ingredients into the butter and egg mixture. Once everything is well incorporated stir in the milk.
5. Spoon the cake mixture on top of the oranges and carefully level it off with a spatula. If you make a gentle indent in the middle of the cake mixture it will compensate for the rise. This helps make the top of your cake flat when it’s baked, making it a better shape when you turn it upside down.
6. Bake the cake in your preheated oven for 1 hour – 1 hour 10 mins until an inserted skewer comes out clean. If you’re using a sprung form cake tin, I recommend baking the cake with an oven tray on the shelf underneath to catch any oozing syrup or escaping fruit juice.
7. Once your cake is baked, leave it in the tin until it’s cool to touch, then turn out upside down onto a plate or serving dish to reveal the sticky golden caramelised oranges.
beans on toast. Broccoli and peas are among the superior plant protein sources. Flax seeds contain branched-chain amino acids, and they’re a great vegan source of essential fatty acids, and pumpkin seeds contain all nine of the essential amino acids.
There are plenty of protein powders available, but these can be faffy. A convenient way to top up on protein is ready-made protein shakes. Shakes are great to have in the fridge for the end of a busy day if you’re worried that you haven’t packed in enough protein. Just grab and gulp!

Home & Garden
After months of not having to heat the home, winter is usually a time when people start experiencing problems with boilers and pipes – especially when the weather turns super chilly.
If you have a condensing boiler, you might find a condensate pipe running from the boiler to an external drainpipe or waste pipe system – and it’s this outdoor pipe, which is prone to freezing up, affecting how well your boiler performs. But you don’t always need to spend hundreds to fix an issue as local business owner, Stanley from AB Stan’s Heating, (who is accredited by Bosch), says: “Simple fixes when it comes to frozen condensate pipes and things like pressure top-ups can usually be done over the phone with an expert,
Design tips you might not have thought of
Add interest to a room by placing items at different heights - shelves, tables, picture frames, etc and having them in different textures and complementary colours.
saving people an emergency call-out charge.”
If you believe you have a problem with a frozen condensate pipe (which runs from the boiler to a soakaway or into the drainage system), Stan recommends a couple of things to try.
1. Locate the outdoor pipe that will be connected to your boiler. It’s usually a white plastic pipe.
2. Fill a watering can with warm (not boiling water) and gently pour this along the length of the pipe, repeating a couple of times.
3. If the pipe feels like it is defrosted, reset your boiler. If in doubt, Stan is available both on the phone and for call-outs on 0800 688 9665 or 07960-700422.
Cut water bills the savvy way
Get water savvy by adopting some of the habits below to save you money down the line...
1. Every time you run the dishwasher or washing machine, aim to put on a full load. If you haven't got a full load look for an economy or eco cycle which uses less water and energy.
Focus on a feature - preferably as soon as you walk into a room. It could be a stunning piece of furniture, a really unusual object or some colourful artwork.
Rather than pushing your furniture against the walls try to bring them into a room if possible. You'll create a sense of depth and it will also free up wall space for things like mirrors and wall murals.
Always have the option of using lamps in rooms like bedrooms and lounges. They will take the harshness of spotlights or downlights away and create a softer, more relaxed vibe.
In small spaces or those without much natural light, use silk paint on the walls or lighter wallpapers to bounce light around. Mirrors also work well in lightening up a space and making it appear bigger.
2. Waiting for tap water to run cold (to water plants for example) can waste as much as ten litres of water a day, so keep a couple of bottles of water in the fridge for tasks like this.
3. Use a water butt in your garden. The rain water it collects can be used to water plants.
4. If you're upgrading your bathroom most new appliances are more eco-friendly. For example, dual flush toilets use much less water than the old style flush systems.
5. Consider using flow limiters on taps or aerated shower heads.
* With the Bromley borough being a hard water area, look for designs that come with a washable filter - it will help you keep on top of the limescale build-up!
* Think about the capacity kettle you need. If you live alone or as a couple you can get away with a smaller one, but a family of six will need at least 1.5 litre capacity

- Working from home is often now the norm, so ensure you are claiming all the available deductions for travel and home office use.

The busiest time of year for shopping is fast approaching and there are many deals to be had. However, it’s important to keep ourselves safe from hackers and scammers that target online shoppers.
Online safety expert Chris Bluvshtein at VPNOverview. com gives his top ten tips for keeping yourself safe while shopping online during the holidays.
Stick to websites you know
You might be tempted by a Google link promising an amazing deal but before you click, look at the name. If it’s not something you recognise, don’t go there. Hackers can use similar names to high-street brands to trick you into giving up your data so double check the site is the one you know.
Check the URL bar
Every website should have a valid security certificate and you can tell by the little padlock icon next to the URL. If a website doesn’t have one of these then don’t give your bank details or valuable information.
Check your bank statements
You might not even be aware of your details being stolen until it’s too late, but by making it a habit to check your account and statements you’ll be able to catch any suspicious activity early on.
Use a password manager
The safest thing you can do is use a unique, randomised password for all your accounts. But instead of writing those down on post-it notes or in notebooks, use a password manager to keep them all in one place. Password managers lock your information behind a master password and many of them autofill the website logins for you, keeping you safe from keylogger attacks .
Don’t shop on public Wi-Fi
You might be tempted to hop onto your favourite shopping site while having a coffee at your local cafe, but Public Wi-Fi rarely has safety protocols such as passwords in place and hackers can steal unsecured banking details and sensitive information without you knowing.
Use mobile payments
Apps like Apple Pay and Google Pay can protect your banking details so if a website accepts them, it’s best to use them instead of your debit card.
Use a credit card
If something is high value, don’t use your debit card to pay for it. Consumer law in the UK means that you could get refunds or claim your money back if your card is stolen.
Set up a temporary bank account
By opening an online only bank account such as Revolut or Monzo, you can control the amount of money you have access to with transfers from your usual account. This way, even if your details are compromised, the hacker can’t do anything to your real bank account.
Use a VPN
A VPN protects your data from prying eyes. Everything you send is encrypted so even if a hacker can see you on a network, they won’t be able to access your sensitive information. VPNs connect you to a remote server and hide your IP, using one along with any of our other tips can make your online shopping super secure.
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!
Be careful with any adverts for amazing deals. You might never get the item or there could be hidden dangers. This old saying still rings true with online shopping.

CYBERSECURITY EXPERTS GIVE 10 TIPS FOR SAFE SHOPPING ONLINE

Google searches for UK ‘Staycations’ surge
With the cost of living continuing to dent our bank accounts, many will be opting for the cheapest ways to get away for a winter break.
Fortunately, Sam Whillance, a savings expert at Deal. Town has shared his expert tips to help you save as much as you can when booking a winter staycation this year.
1. Book closer to home
No matter where you live, you don’t need to travel too far to find a complete change of scenery.
With petrol prices fluctuating, you want to save as much money on travel as you can, which means opting for somewhere closer to home.
Therefore, swapping a long drive for a journey of an hour or so to a nearby coastal or rural area, will help you save on petrol money, stress, and of course is better for the environment too.
2. Avoid events when booking accommodation
If you book a weekend somewhere without realising there is a huge concert or sporting event happening at the same time, not only will prices be higher, but also places will be a lot busier.
Generally, weekends are always more expensive than weekdays, due to higher demand, so if you can get away during the week, do so.
3. Book directly with a hotel
Whilst using comparison sites to check prices and locations is a good place to start, it is recommended you directly contact the hotel or B&B for a good deal.
Often, their best deals aren’t always on comparison sites. Also, it may be the case that the hotel is listed as sold out for your dates on a comparison site, however by directly contacting the accommodation, they could let you know whether they get a last-minute cancellation.
4. Bring your own food
Whilst eating out is one of the best parts of a holiday, it can be expensive if you’re doing it every day.
Especially if you are in a cosy lodge in the countryside, bringing along your own food to cook will definitely help you save on spends.
If you are doing a supermarket shop on the way to your trip, do some research online for the supermarkets that currently have the best deals.
Of course, being signed up to a loyalty scheme offered by supermarkets will slash your basket price significantly.
5. Sign up to loyalty schemes
Speaking of loyalty schemes, like supermarket shopping, it is also worth signing up to free loyalty schemes with
hotel chains and booking websites to save money when staycationing in the UK.
Often, they will give loyal customers promotions and discounts for their next trip, so it is always worth getting yourself on the mailing list.
6. Opt for budget-friendly accommodation sites
Always opt for budget-friendly accommodation websites for your staycation.
Often, the best option is to look for vacation rentals by owner. VRBO offers accommodation owned privately that are usually less expensive than traditional hotel rooms and can offer more space and amenities.
Another option is booking a room in a bed and breakfast (B&B), that are often family-owned and operated. Therefore, you will receive a more personal experience and often B&Bs will offer discounts for longer stays.
7. Plan ahead
We all know that saying, but planning ahead will always help you avoid being caught out by last-minute price surges. Planning your trip in advance can allow you to take advantage of early bird discounts and special offers.
8. Stay with friends and family
This is not always possible for everybody, but if you are lucky enough to have friends or family in different parts of the UK, you could save a lot of money on your staycation trip by staying with them.
Whether it’s a family member’s home, a friend’s caravan or a winter lodge, don’t hesitate to ask, as this could save you a great deal on accommodation.
9. Try to travel off-peak
If possible, travel during off-peak periods, this will be significantly cheaper.
Essentially, avoid weekday rush hours from 6 am-10 am and 4pm-8pm. The best time to travel on a motorway to avoid weekend congestion is on an early morning, Saturday or after 6pm and around 11am on a Sunday.
10. Don’t forget insurance
Even though you may not be leaving the country, unexpected and costly problems are just as likely to arise the same as if you were heading abroad.
There can be anything from travel delays, lost or stolen luggage and cancellations.
Therefore, if you are purchasing a train ticket, it is always worth adding insurance onto it, just in case there are any sudden changes to your journey. The same applies to accommodation, it is always worth securing any money you have spent.

A Final Thought…
Is it all doom and gloom for pubs?
by JAMIE WRIGHT
It has been a familiar story over the past few decades; the English pub is in terminal decline. One of the touchstones of English and British culture for hundreds of years, part of the fabric of village and town life no longer has such a favoured position in our hearts, it seems. The figures seem to bear this out with around 5,000 pubs lost in the past five years alone. And then came the Coronavirus pandemic. Aside from the human loss, the hospitality industry, which includes pubs, has been hit disproportionately by COVID-19 with some sources suggesting that the industry as a whole lost £100 million for each month of lockdown…
Well…that paints a sombre picture and you could be forgiven for thinking that the direction of travel is one way. Pubs have tried to change their appeal over the years to deal with each of the bumps in the road: becoming more family friendly; improving the food offering; trying to shake off negative stereotypes. People’s image of pubs is often limited to throbbing town centre pubs, replete with large screen TVs, the occasional scuffle and bouncers on the door- not everyone’s idea of a good night out.
Now local residents of Bromley North ‘village’ might not thank me for revealing their secret. Seemingly a million miles away from the homogeneity of the town centre, there is an oasis which seems to have been transported from a by-gone age. As the cars zoom by at the intersection of Kentish Way and Widmore Road, nestled behind Bromley Baptist Church, there is a quiet pedestrian walkway to Park Road. Suddenly the noise of 21st century Bromley dissipates and is replaced by residential calm.
Our first stop on our little pub crawl was the Crown and Anchor. At dusk on this balmy August evening, it stood handsome and white-fronted on the corner of Park and Palace Roads with hanging baskets cascading from their
planters. There was a little book exchange shelf outside too - which was a nice touch. Inside was lively with a real mix of ages which was also good to see. I took my Bexley’s Own beer outside to the garden area, complete with a seaside mural and comfy seating area.

Suitably refreshed, we poured out onto Palace Road, headed for the Anglesey Arms. Dusk had darkened and the smart frontage of the pub was illuminated now. The interior again in this Shepherd Neame house dating to the 1870s, was cosy and welcoming but as the weather was still so warm, we repaired to the garden, holding on to our Whitstable Bays. https://www.angleseyarmsbromley.co.uk
We continued along Palace Road no more than a couple of minutes to the White Horse. This is how I picture a pub; filled with laughter and conversation and with the intimacy of a front room. We opted for an Atlantic Pale Ale and asked the friendly landlady to turn on the lights of the pool table and whiled away the time on the green baize. https:// thewhitehorsebromley.godaddysites.com
An actual stone’s throw from the White Horse is the Red Lion on North Road. On the night we arrived, some of the locals had just come back from a trip to Sandown Park and a buffet table was laid out for them- this really is a community pub for the locals. There was a wide range of beers on offer but I couldn’t resist an Abbot Ale and it was excellent. There is food available here too and the stone-baked pizzas looked amazing (although we limited ourselves to some chilli nuts). Towards the back of the pub is a dart board (the pub is active in the darts leagues) and we inexpertly played 501 as the pub neared closing time. https://redlionbromley.co.uk
As an admirer of pub culture, I think Bromley North really can count itself lucky. But perhaps it isn’t luck - here smuggled in among the houses are little gems. The quintessence of the British pub is to be found here; homely, welcoming and warm. I look forward to another trip here soon.
