By Anthony Welch
C
harlie Consalvos followed a few simple guidelines when he worked as a limousine driver in New York City in the 1950s – be seen and not heard. “If they (passengers) spoke to me, I spoke to them,” the 89-year-old Pueblo West man said. “If they didn’t, you kept your mouth shut.” Sticking to that rule and establishing a good rapport with his clients led to a successful career that spanned over a few decades for Consalvos. The man known as “Charlie C” became to the go-to driver for many celebrities. Not too long after he started driving, however, he had his first well-known client – Fidel Castro.
Consalvos’ first job involved driving U.N. diplomats and other world leaders around the New York area as a high-security driver. Castro had come to speak at the United Nations.
“I drove him to the U.N., and sat in the back while he gave his speech,” Consalvos said. “When

News about older Americans doesn’t usually make the front page. Recently, however, the prospect of federal budget cuts to Meals on Wheels and other senior programs made headlines. TV newscasts, articles on Fortune.com as well as stories in USA Today, the local Gazette and the Pueblo Chieftain raised eyebrows – and concern. The topic has also spurred citizens of all ages into action. For those new to Meals on Wheels America, the organization was
founded in 1974 as a nonprofit that receives funding from the federal government, state and local governments and private donors. Last year it served more than 2.4 million seniors ranging in age from 60 to 100-plus years old. A recent outpouring of support by AARP and local advocates has brought the situation to the forefront. NBC reported, for example, that more than $100,000 in online Meals on Wheels donations in a single day – up from an average of $1,000. There’s also been a registered spike in the

Knee Pain Treatment Makes Surgery Obsolete?
Hundreds of Colorado Springs Knee Pain sufferers choose all-natural medical treatment over surgery to relieve arthritis pain - doctors office swarmed for FDA cleared treatment covered by most insurance and Medicare By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer
Knee pain can be crippling. And for serious arthritis sufferers there have been few options besides pain pills and eventually total knee replacement surgery. That is, until now. For the past year and a half, hundreds of knee pain sufferers have flocked to Osteo Relief Institute located in Colorado Springs right here in the state of Colorado. That’s when their specially trained doctors added Hyalgan treatments to their already successful and comprehensive knee pain relief program. Hyalgan is unique because - even though it is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, it is NOT considered a drug because it is a natural substance with an incredible story. Why So Many Want It You see, when you suffer with arthritis - the lubricating fluid in your knee joint dries up. This means instead of gliding smoothly - your bones start to rub and grind against each other. This causes a little pain in the beginning but over time the pain steadily gets worse until it is excruciating. Like “Joint Oil” Hyalgan works so well because it is like “joint oil.” It is a natural substance that contains one of the natural building blocks of your knee’s lubricating fluid.
Seeing is believing: Actual Video Flouroscopy showing the painful knee joint before and after Hyalgan treatment. The video xray on the right shows the Hyalgan inside the joint - coating the joint space and lubricating it. This allows the joint surfaces to glide more smoothly and reduce of even end knee pain. When it is injected directly into your knee joint, it is like squirting oil on a rusty door hinge. Hyalgan allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain. Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of supplements that claim to do what this advanced medical procedure does. “We have been able to help so many knee pain sufferers - even many who have already tried other injections like Synvisc, Supartz, Orthovisc and even Hyalgan. We use advanced low-dose video flouroscopy imaging so we can see right into the joint. This allows us to put the Hyaglan
exactly where it needs to be. Studies show doctors doing joint injections without flouroscopy miss the joint up to one third of the time.” said one of the head clinicians at the Osteo Relief Institute located in Colorado Springs, CO. And that’s not all Osteo Relief Institute has a complete knee relief program called “P.A.C.E.” to make sure you get the most pain relief and the best possible results from treatment. “Every case is individual. Some patients get quite a bit of relief right away - others take a little more time. But most have been extremely happy and the results usually last for at least 6 months. Patients who were suffering for years with bad knee pain are getting their lives back... going for walks again and exercising. It’s amazing to see. They tell all their friends - that’s why we are swarmed. I can’t tell you how many patients
have cancelled their total knee replacement surgeries.” added one of the doctors. How To Get It If you have knee pain, The doctors would like to invite you for a free screening to see if you are a candidate for Hyalgan treatments and the P.A.C.E program. All you have to do is call 719-266-2855 right now and when the scheduling specialist answers the phone tell her you would like your risk free “Knee Pain Screening.” The doctor can only accept a limited amount of new patients each month for this screening - so if you are interested please call now. And here’s something really important Hyalgan treatments and the P.A.C.E program are covered by most insurance and Medicare. To schedule your risk free screening or if you have any questions call 719266-2855.

The Pass Key: A Pueblo Tradition
By Becky Hurley This is another in Life After 50’s Historic Restaurants series
T
he history of Pueblo’s Pass Key restaurants is a 60-year family affair. Known for its special family recipe Italian sausage sandwiches, Dutch Lunches and other savory menu items, the restaurant chain was started in 1952 by the late John and Frank Pagano. The brothers’ family had
acquired the original location — a drive-in restaurant on Abriendo Avenue — from Vitale Pasquale (aka “Paskie”). Today, Julie Pagano – John’s daughter and Frank’s niece – manages the group’s Pass Key 50 West restaurant. She says her dad and uncle
- Julie Pagano
had little knowledge of a drive-in operation when they started out, but “learned the hard way.” “They had to do the ‘car-hopping,’

wait on tables and do the cleanup, and cooking all by themselves,” she explains. Fortunately the boys’ mother, Helen Pagano, was there to help. Eventually the John and Frank hired their first employee — a car-hop — and introduced a new generation of employees to Pass Key. A few longtime cooks and waitresses now have children who are following in their footsteps. Julie, along with her mother Mary Jo, son Luke Fleckenstein, sisters (Jonna and Kathy) or other family members are usually easy to find – both in the front and the back of the house.

“We enjoy carrying on a great family tradition, often 24/7,” Julie explains. In fact, when she asked Luke ‘Do you really want to run your own [family] restaurant, rather than work 9 to 5 for someone else,’ he didn’t hesitate. “No Mom, I know what I want – to run this restaurant and carry on grandad’s legacy.’” The hometown business includes three different locations: 518 E. Abriendo Ave. (Pass Key South); 3416 W. Northern Ave (Pass Key 50 West) and one in Pueblo West. For those hungry for casual eat-in or take-out dining, the menu offers a wide range of choices. Options include homemade pasta and meatballs, a 21-item salad bar, a sharable Dutch Lunch, sandwiches, homemade soup, green chile, french fries, onion rings for starters. The most popular item with online reviewers and locals both, however, is definitely the Pass Key Special Italian sausage sandwich. Ingredients

Trip Advisior reviewer, “jbeeebroomfield” recently weighed in: “Haven’t been here in years so we drove down from Denver for lunch. Wow still excellent … Look at the menu if you wish, but there is no need. Just get the Pass Key special with provolone and onion rings. Great flavor, with a flat sausage, lettuce peppers and mustard … Five solid stars.” jbeeebroomfield And he’s not alone. Julie Pagano says a few regulars have been customers since the 1950s. “Some still remember the first small building on Abriendo and the car hops,” she says. “We hear stories all the time,” she adds. One couple had their first date at Pass Key South and ended up getting married. Another military customer told her while he was stationed overseas, his buddies got to talking. “They found out they all liked Pass
Key – and wished we had a restaurant in Iraq.” Even during the Recession, the company’s three outlets remained busy. Julie credits good food and low prices “that allow people to enjoy our food.” Future plans include adding new menu options like today’s spaghetti and meatballs or Pasta Alfredo.
But the family also plans to stay true to classics like “Pueblo’s Best Sausage Sandwich.” Like softball at Stauter Field, fishing at Runyon Lake or the annual Bell Game, these family-owned eateries are one of Pueblo’s time-honored traditions.

Spirituality and Well-being By Marcia Pottenger, B.A. As we get older, many of us begin to think less frequently about those new golf clubs or trying out the latest restaurant and more about the meaning of life and the legacy we wish to leave. A famous psychologist, Erik Erikson, called this stage of life “integrity vs. despair.” Thinking of these two terms on a continuum, at one end is integrity and at the other
despair. Integrity in this context includes a sense of contentment and fulfillment—being able to look back on a life filled with meaning and valuable contributions. Despair, on the other hand, is looking back on one’s life and viewing it as a failure. People on this end of the continuum tend to fear death, thinking, “What was the point of life? Was it worth it?” Spirituality is a common theme upon which people tend to reflect at this later life stage.

Articulating your own thoughts on spirituality can help guide you to a more purposeful way of moving through your later years. Spirituality in this sense is not limited to religious beliefs and practices but recognizes the meaning and value-making inherent in all life. In the broadest sense, it pertains to one’s inner resources, or the basic value around which all other values are focused (Snodgrass & Sorajjakool, 2011). Spirituality also encompasses compassion, hope, and a sense of meaning and purpose in life. According to Lavretsky (2010), research shows that at least 88 percent of Americans report being spiritual. People who turn to their spiritual beliefs tend to have better ways of coping with life’s adversities, and they experience decreased anxiety and
depression, as well as a greater sense of emotional well-being and better overall health (Richards, Bartz, & O’Grady, 2009). As we grow older, the question of how we are living now and the meaning our lives have is at the core of our existence. What are some practical steps one can take toward moving from despair to integrity on Erikson’s continuum? First, take some time to reflect on your life. What gives you meaning? During what times in your life were you able to live with purpose? How were you able to cope with loss? What did these times mean to you in terms of how you will live going forward? Second, it is important to engage in meaningful conversations with others. The next time you have lunch or coffee with a loved one or a friend, instead of discussing the latest movie, the most recent happening in the lives of grandchildren or how well your garden is doing, try starting a conversation on the meaning of life. Discuss each other’s life purpose to

SPIRITUALITY/from page 8 uncover your deepest values and hopes. Delve into the thoughts of your loved one or friend, and see where it leads. Articulating your own thoughts on spirituality can help guide you to a more purposeful way of moving through your later years. Finally, if you are feeling isolated, reach out to a professional mental health therapist to help guide you through these existential questions. A therapist can walk with you through these vital issues and help you learn new ways to cope with grief or loss and other stressors. In addition, good nutrition and physical health will boost your resilience and are linked with spirituality (Lavretsky, 2010). Actively re-engaging with your spirituality, in whatever form that may take, has the potential of leading to more satisfaction and peace as we age. MEALS/from page 1 number of new volunteers willing to serve as drivers or to deliver meals. “We had about 15 new volunteers come in and sign up to deliver Meals on Wheels just days after the proposed Meals on Wheels funding cut was announced last month,” says Colorado Springsbased Silver Key Senior Services spokeswoman Lorri Orwig. “They understand how important it is to get meals to the people who need them.” Today both El Paso and Pueblo counties make sure home-delivered meals get to thousands of recipients. The community-wide programs enable at-risk seniors to stay out of more expensive healthcare settings and to remain healthy, safe and independent in their own homes, Orwig explains. “We delivered about 57,000 meals to seniors last
year,” she says. “To put that in perspective, the annual cost to provide someone with Meals on Wheels is about the same as the cost of an average one-day stay in the hospital or 10 days in a nursing home.” While potential budget cuts will not impact Silver Key’s Meals on Wheels program directly, other nutrition services could be affected, Orwig says. The city’s Golden Circle congregant meal program offered at 19 sites and related home-delivered meals are potentially in jeopardy. Pueblo’s Senior Resource Development Agency management team is faced with a similar problem. In contrast to the El Paso County program, Pueblo County’s 88 volunteer drivers take a daily meal to 300 or so homebound people in Pueblo daily, Monday through Friday. The 2018 proposed Trump administration budget could decrease the agency’s
funding by 60 percent – a tremendous blow to the many low income families that depend on its meals. “It would not only affect being able to offer mileage reimbursement for our drivers who use their own vehicles to deliver Meals on Wheels, but more importantly, it would hurt those who depend on us,” says Pueblo Volunteer Coordinator Gloria Valdez. She notes that her drivers have expressed concern – mostly because they know the value of each meal to their clients. “We have the best volunteers anywhere,” she adds. “Some work every day. They love the people they meet – they really care.” That view is shared by Silver Key CEO Pat Ellis. “An interruption or reduction in Federal funding could result in not only the loss of a meal, but the opportunity to share a meal with others. This can be very important to seniors who live alone,” she says.

Words of Life
The Faith of Mothers By Kay Owen-Larson “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” 2 Timothy 1:5 You may not know the name Anna Javis, but she was the first one to suggest having a national observance of an annual day honoring all mothers because she had loved her mother so much. At a memorial service for her mother on May 10, 1908, she gave a carnation, which was her mother’s favorite flower, to every person who attended. Well, the idea of honoring mothers soon caught on and on May 9, 1914 by an act of congress, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. He established it as a time for ‘’public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.’’ Mother’s Day is one of the most special days in all of the year. We are told there are more telephone calls
made on Mother’s Day than any other time of the year. If you haven’t called your mom yet, I want to encourage you to do so. It is a day when we remember our mothers. We give her gifts, visits, and phone calls. Abraham Lincoln said, ‘’No man is poor who has a godly mother.’’ There have been many mothers in the history of the world who have impacted their sons in a tremendous way. Abraham Lincoln was one of those. St. Augustine, the great religious leader, had a mother named Monica and it was the prayers of his mother, Monica, which brought him to the foot of the cross. Others have had godly mothers in the history of the world. Also the Bible tells us about many wonderful mothers who are great examples for all of the mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers alive today who want to be what God wants them to be. Let’s let our faith shine today for not only our children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren but for everyone around us. Happy Mother’s Day!

till ready to join a gym? Great! Consider this article your protection against fraud and abuse. In the April 2017 issue of Life After 50, we talked about some of the tactics that gyms use to try and rope you into a contract. Since then, (just in the past month), readers here in the Springs have emailed me with their nightmare stories: Owner of a Karate Dojo writes: “I ended my agreement with ______ Gym both in person and in a letter but they still claim I owe them money for gym fees. Now they’re taking me to collections.” Window Installation Tech writes: “When my personal trainer left ____ Athletic Club, I followed her. So there was no need for me to continue at that gym. I did everything the contract said to do and By Vicki Morgan cancelled, but they’re still charging me $400 per month for personal training. My credit card company won’t protect me. Now I’m getting a lawyer.” A former gym member writes: “Every so often, ____ Fitness will call me and claim I owe them money. Every single time, I explain that I’ve cancelled my membership. Then we argue for five straight minutes and finally, the person will apologize for the inconvenience and hang up! I feel sorry for the people who actually fall for it!”
With that said, here is a list of survival questions for you to cut out and take with you as you shop for prospective gyms: • Do you offer a month to month agreement, without auto-pay or contract? Can I pay with a check, cash or credit card in person? • What is your enrollment fee? Do you charge a maintenance fee or any other hidden fees or costs?
Part tWo
• Does your monthly membership special include the classes, childcare, and use of all the facility? • Am I required to have a Fitness Assessment? I don’t feel comfortable that. I just want to use the gym and work out on my own. • OR ... Can I pay for my personal training

“New FDA Approved Treatment for Burning, Numb and Painful Feet”
Dear Neuropathy Victim, I hear every day from people suffering with numb, burning and painful feet. They want to know-“is there anything that has been proven to help with these terrible feelings and this worsening condition”. Patients are coming from Canon City to Castle Rock, Divide to Peyton, from all over the State because I am often their ‘last resort’ doctor. If I can’t help them, they will have no where left to turn. They, like you, have usually been told, “Well, you probably have neuropathy so here is your prescription for pain medication”, and / or they’ve been told, “there’s nothing that can be done for the neuropathy in your legs and your feet” except to block your ability to feel your pain with seizure medications or anti-depressants like Neurontin and Lyrica. When it comes to pairing wine with food, even experts agree that desserts can pose a challenge. A wide variety of flavor combinations can make it hard to find the perfect selection to serve with your sweet treat. While there’s no exact science to wine pairing, these simple tips can help you make your selection. Sweet Cheesecake A good rule: the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. Avoid heavy reds for a sweeter dessert and instead pair with a crisp white like Chardonnay, such as Joseph Carr from Sonoma, California. Citrusy Lemon Meringue Pie Lemon flavors can sometimes be polarizing, but complementing this dessert with an equally citrusy wine can work wonders. Try pairing with a food-friendly pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc. Rich Chocolate Cake Red wine with chocolate seems like a no-brainer, but not all red wines are created equal. For a richer delicacy like this devil’s food cake, try something like Villa Pozzi Nero D’avola, a more fruit-forward, easy-drinking red varietal. For more tips and wine selections, visit winefix.com.

Well beyond surgery.
At Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group, we believe surgery should be the final option, not the first recommendation. That’s why our team stays up to date with the latest surgical and non-surgical advancements in orthopedic care, including minimally invasive procedures and cutting-edge research like Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell therapy.
