Welcome to the new Life After 50!

C

OVID-19 kept us from printing during the month of May and the pandemic altered our operations a bit. We were down, but definitely not out.

It’s fitting that our publication gets a major facelift during our 30th year of serving seniors.

Change isn’t always easy. However, I’m confident that readers will appreciate our new magazine look, along with new sections, new columns and—of course—stories on seniors in the Pikes Peak region.

I’m grateful for this new direction, and I’m blessed to have a great crew of writers and columnists. In my 20-plus year career in journalism, working for Life After 50 has proven to be the most enjoyable.

SPEAKING OF CHANGES COVID-19 has created a new reality for us all.

(Anyone else sick of hearing “new normal” or “these challenging times” on TV and radio?) A simple trip to the grocery store now requires a mask, social distancing from other people, and a dousing of hand sanitizer afterward.

My son, Jaxson, is back in the classroom wearing a mask. His desk is spaced out from the

other students, and he’s required to eat lunch six feet away from his pals. It breaks my heart to remind him that he can’t hug his friends because this little guy is a huge hugger.

We adults have to abide by the same protocol and resist the urge to hug our good friends when we see them. We’re now reserved to fist and elbow bumps.

For others, however, the isolation and distancing have taken a bigger toll. This was the case for writer Melanie Wiseman. Her parents’ independent living facility went on lockdown when the pandemic broke out. Even as her mother’s health quickly declined, Wiseman wasn’t able to see or hug her mom until the day before her passing. In fact, she was only given one hour to be with her dying mother.

The cruelty of

quarantine A daughter’s search for compassion amid a pandemic

EVEN THOUGH IT WAS MEANT TO PROTECT RESIDENTS’ HEALTH, THE QUARANTINE DID THE OPPOSITE.

U

ntil recently, the COVID-19 pandemic was a mere inconvenience. I still biked, hiked, camped and enjoyed small socially distanced gatherings with friends. Everything changed when my mother’s health suddenly and rapidly declined in a Wisconsin independent living apartment 1,200 miles away.

My siblings and I were now among the thousands of families being kept away from fragile loved ones when they needed us most.

Our parents were prisoners to the virus.

HEALTH IS WHOLENESS On March 11, two days after celebrating my dad’s 94th birthday, their independent living facility went into lockdown. My plane ticket to visit the following week would have to wait. Never did I imagine I’d be flying out two months later, just

to watch my mother through her bedroom window with tears in her eyes, arms outstretched, longing to give me a hug.

Even though it was meant to protect residents’ health, the quarantine did the opposite. With her heart weakening, lack of movement and exercise meant fluid filled Mom’s legs and around her lungs, and tethered her to an oxygen machine.

Meals were brought to my parents’ room, and all in-person socialization with friends and family came to a halt. They became depressed and anxious, with little to look for-

“Health is wholeness—the total wellbeing of the person,” said Dad. “There is physical pain and there is emotional pain.”

Their wholeness was not being cared for. Isolation took away any quality of life my mom had left.

Each time I called my parents would say, “At least we have each other.

We think of all the people going through this alone.”

SEARCHING FOR COMPASSION By the time Dad ultimately said, “Come home,” I had just over a week with Mom before she died.

Each day, I pleaded with the facility director to be able to physically and freely hug, hold and comfort them both. Every day I was told, “No.” From behind windows, screens and iron fences, I watched as my mom, now a shadow of herself, was comforted by those who were strangers to me. These “strangers” then went home to their families and friends, while my mom’s own family stood outside.

My father was by my mother’s side at all times, exhausted, but extremely attentive. His being there was our only consolation as anger and frustration built up among us children and grandchildren.

Fortunately, Mom knew what was happening and was at peace, which was the greatest gift she could give us. In return, we wanted to grant her deepest desire: the ability to hold her family. We’d been denied for months; surely at the end of her life, compassion would prevail over rules.

But even as a hospice team was called, we were denied entry. The facility told us that when our mom was “actively dying”—within 48

But they never called it. We did.

After we’d visited Mom in the morning on June 11, my sister, her daughter and I recognized the nearness of my mom’s passing and pressed harder than ever to be allowed to spend time with her. The three of us were finally given one hour that afternoon. We used that hour to its fullest, taking off our masks when staff left the room and watching Mom light up like a Christmas tree as she saw our smiles and faces. We listened closely to her fading voice and reminisced over photos of her life growing up on a farm in Michigan.

“When I was a young person, I thought a lot about what my purpose was, and then I met your dad, and I knew. We would do it together,” she said. “I no longer have a purpose, but now it’s you kids’ and grandkids’ turn to take over for us.”

When the hour was up, my sister and I each gave her a hug and told her how much we loved her. As we went to leave, she quietly called me back.

“I need another hug,” she said.

I tearfully complied at length and once again we told each other, “I

love you.”

I assured her we would see her tomorrow morning. But there was no tomorrow. My mother, beautiful both inside and out, died in her sleep that night.

THE PRICE OF PROTECTION Why, you might ask, would I choose to share such a personal experience?

Because this story is happening every day, all over the world. Facilities are “protecting” people from the virus, but at what cost?

The distressing end to lives from COVID or amid its restrictions is hard to fathom, but it’s very real.

Families who just want to hold their dying loved ones face a moment in history where isolation reigns and liability overrules compassion.

I strongly believe that my mom’s death came quicker, not from heart failure, but from a broken heart.

Did she die from COVID? No. Did she die much sooner because of it?

Absolutely. My father agreed that the isolating confinement caused by the pandemic both rushed her death and was an undeniably cruel way to die.

“It’s time for me to grieve and adjust after falling in love with your mom every day for the last 72 years,” Dad said. “There isn’t a normal way to do that in this current situation.”

Sadly, the cruelty continues.

The day after my mother died, Dad went back to being alone in their apartment, with no visitors. He FaceTimes with his children and grandchildren, but it’s no substitute for stimulating contact and social communication. He can’t leave the facility except for essential appointments. simple phone conversation with Chuck Zukowski can get very interesting very quickly.

A microchip engineer by day and paranormal investigator by night, he mentioned some of the cases he had investigated prior to COVID-19 as if they weren’t too big of a deal.

Those cases included strange lights spotted east of Calhan, a Bigfoot sighting near Green Mountain Falls and peculiar animal killings up in Cripple Creek.

“That was kind of a cool one. It was almost chupacabra-like stuff.

The animals had puncture marks,” Zukowski said. “Three animals were dead, one survived and one missing. The rancher saw some unusual things in the sky and unusual things running around out there.”

PASSION FOR THE PARANORMAL Zukowski grew fascinated with everything paranormal as a child.

He was born and raised in Safford, Arizona, where he constantly questioned the nuns at his Catholic school.

Zukowski immersed himself into everything paranormal from that point on. He read, researched and attended symposiums to learn more about the field. It wasn’t long before he was conducting his own investigations.

“I became a field investigator and UFO detective of sorts,” Zukowski said. “I’d go on site, look for evidence and talk to people that actually witnessed an event.”

In his line of work, some of his favorite people to talk to are kids.

“A few years ago, a father and his kids saw a triangular craft fly over Austin Bluffs in the late afternoon,” he said. “I love talking to kids. As we get older, we try to understand what we saw based on what we know. Little kids will just say what they saw flat out.”

LIFE AFTER 50 Zukowski’s investigating skills were bolstered by his eight years spent as an El Paso County reserve sheriff’s deputy. However, his fascination for solving paranormal mysteries is what he enjoys most.

“I look at all my investigations analytically,” he said. “I use that thinking going into investigations in ufology and try to eliminate anything that could be possible first.

TV STARDOM The 30-year paranormal investigator quickly became so experienced and knowledgeable in the field, that he was asked to provide commentary on several cable television shows. Since 2002, he’s appeared on 10 shows on the SyFy Network, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel and ABC. In December 2018, Zukowski was given his own show on the Travel Channel. “Alien Highway” ran for one season, eight episodes total, in 2019. Zukowski, his son Daniel and fellow investigator Heather Taddy followed up on his cases along what he calls “UFO Highway”—the 37th Parallel.

“There were no scripts. They’d turn the camera on and say, ‘Okay, Chuck, do your stuff,”’ he said.

Through his research and investigations, Zukowski has found numerous UFO sightings, cattle mutilations and other strange activity along the 37th parallel north latitude, which travels through Colorado, New Mex-

ico, Utah and Arizona.

Author Ben Mezrich details Zukowski’s findings in his 2016 New York Times best-selling book, “The 37th Parallel: The Secret Truth Behind America’s UFO Highway.”

“It’s been optioned to New Line Cinema,” Zukowski added. “Last I heard, the screenplay has been written and is starting to get a little interest now.”

RESUMING INVESTIGATIONS When COVID-19 hit, Zukowski’s investigations came to a screeching halt. He used the down time to upgrade equipment and learn about the different kinds of technology investigators are using these days.

He’s just now starting to resume his investigations and receive more reports of the paranormal.

“In May, there was a string of lights spotted between Fountain and Pueblo. Just on the other side of Black Forest, people are seeing some interesting things,” he said.

Zukowski mentioned that the “Godfather of Roswell” Stanton Friedman—a nuclear physicist and professional ufologist—died last year. He was an civilian investigator of the Roswell UFO incident.

“He passed away at an airport coming back from a lecture,” Zukowski said. “That’s how I want to go. He was pushing and pushing the UFO thing, and that’s how he died.”

Spinach-Ham Dip Bread Bowl Recipe courtesy of www.Culinary.net Ingredients: 2

cups ricotta cheese

1

cup sour cream

package (10 ounces) frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry

1/4 pound ham, cubed 3/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 2

green onions, thinly sliced

round bread loaf (16 ounces), unsliced

Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. In medium bowl, blend ricotta cheese and sour cream until smooth.

Add spinach, ham, Parmesan cheese and green onions; mix until blended.

Cut 1-2-inch diameter circle out of top of bread loaf. Reserve top.

Remove bread inside loaf, leaving about 1 inch along sides. Pour cheese mixture into bread bowl. Replace top. Cover bread loaf in aluminum foil and bake 60 minutes, or until warmed through.

Take bread removed from inside bread bowl and cut into dipping sized chunks.

Remove bread from aluminum foil and place on platter. Scatter bread chunks around bread bowl to use for dunking in cheese sauce. ■

I’m sick of dating virtually Dear Old Bag: I read your answer to the woman who realized she was in a miserable relationship for 40 years and wanted out. I am in a similar marriage, and I want to leave this miserable man. I talked to my adult kids about it, and they are dead set against it. They say, “Mom, it’s too late. Dad won’t know what to do without you.” I say, “What about me?”

They said that I am a strong woman and I can manage anything. So, am I supposed to stay put because he won’t know what to do? He is mean enough to manage! Help! Signed, Fed Up Dear Fed Up: There’s a strange thing that happens as we age: Our kids seem to take on the parenting role and think they know what is better for us! As long as you have all your marbles and your thinking process is intact, you should make your own decisions. Perhaps you could do a dry run? Leave him for a month and see how you both feel. He may come to new realizations about his behavior, and you might think misery is better than loneliness. At least it’s worth a try. Let me know what you decide.

Then he suggested we should just move in together. I am against that because my family has not met him, although both our families know about us.

What should I do? JJ Dear JJ: It sounds as if you two must know each other very well by now.

While I think moving in together might be a bridge too far right now, I don’t see why you can’t bring him into “your bubble.” These are the people you associate with on a regular basis, such as family members or close friends. If you bring him in, he could meet whoever else is in your bubble and you could be let into his bubble—then you could continue to see each other until you either make the relationship permanent or call it off! Dear Old Bag: I am writing about my mom who lives alone. I get so mad at her because she has fallen several times because she won’t consistently use her walker. I’m afraid she will fall and break a hip, or worse.

Help! I’m growing man boobs!

“M

y breasts have become large and I’m embarrassed.

What can I do?”

This question came from a man in his 60s. Actually, breast enlargement in males is common, as well as the embarrassment that comes with it. About 30 percent of older men have this condition, which can be caused by hormonal changes or simple weight gain.

When the usual balance of estrogen and testosterone shifts, man can get “gynecomastia,” which is derived from the Greek words meaning “woman” and “breast.”

Estrogen controls female traits, including the growth of breasts.

Testosterone dictates male traits, such as muscle mass and body hair.

Males normally produce small quantities of estrogen to regulate bone density, sperm production and mood. Natural hormonal changes that lead to gynecomastia also oc-

cur during infancy and adolescence.

Gynecomastia can be caused by a health problem such as liver, kidney or thyroid diseases. This condition can also result from drinking alcohol or taking steroids, marijuana, amphetamines and heroin.

There are medications that can cause gynecomastia, too. These include anti-androgens, such as finasteride, that are used to treat prostate cancer; AIDS medications such as efavirenz or didanosine; anti-anxiety medications like Valium; tricyclic antidepressants; antibiotics; ulcer medications such as cimetidine; chemotherapy drugs; and heart medications such as digitalis and calcium channel blockers.

Some additional symptoms of gynecomastia include tenderness, swelling and nipple discharge. If you have enlarged breasts, see your doctor. Enlarged breasts can be

a symptom of breast cancer or a testicular tumor.

You could also be suffering from “pseudo-gynecomastia,” which occurs when a male’s enlarged breasts are due to a lot of chest fat.

You can tell the difference between false gynecomastia and the real thing by examining the breasts.

In an exam, a health care professional spreads a thumb and forefinger and places them—opposing each other—on the circumference of the breast. The fingers are then squeezed gently toward the nipple.

Gynecomastia is diagnosed if there is enlarged glandular tissue that feels like a rubbery disk. Often, this

tissue can be moved around.

Gynecomastia is often treated with drugs. Sometimes, enlarged breasts are reduced surgically.

Medications used to treat breast cancer and other conditions may be helpful for some men with gynecomastia. These drugs include anti-estrogen medications such as raloxifene and tamoxifen.

Two types of surgery are used to treat gynecomastia: liposuction and mastectomy. Liposuction removes breast fat, but not the breast gland tissue. Mastectomy removes the breast gland tissue. ■

Picky eater? You could be B vitamin deficient

W

hen you think of B complex, you probably think of it as just one B vitamin. But “B complex” refers to a group of B vitamins consisting of B1, B2, B3, B6 and others.

The B complex dietary supplement is intended to fill a nutrient gap that some people develop from malnutrition. While this is fine, most people can eat their way to a better B status.

The concerns about B vitamin deficiency are frequently overlooked by the most caring practitioners. The mindset in today’s health care system is to medicate you, so doctors often prescribe a drug for a symptom even if that symptom stems from a nutrient deficiency! But that’s why you have me to help identify nutrient depletion and proper ways of restoration.

Some signs and symptoms of B deficiency include fatigue, anemia, diarrhea, hypothyroidism, burning mouth, nerve pain, memory issues, depression, vision or hearing difficulty, hair loss, confusion, agitation and numbness.

One factor that leads to B vitamin deficiency is being a fussy eater. There’s a new case study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine about a boy who only ate fries, white bread, potato chips, slices of ham and sometimes sausage. According to the study, the diet impacted his hearing and vision as a teenager. His B12 deficiency was so profound, injections of it couldn’t save his sight.

As adults, B deficiencies could be

even more detrimental due to the oxidative damage that occurs from drinking alcohol, smoking and taking medicines that deplete B vitamins. Medications that are known to lower B vitamins include oral contraceptives, blood pressure pills, Metformin, antibiotics and acid blockers.

The first sign of B12 deficiency could appear in the toilet as diarrhea or loose stools. If you suddenly have this problem and it’s not related to food poisoning or antibiotic use, consider a B vitamin deficiency. A balanced diet will give you the full range of B vitamins: eggs, vegetables, salad, fruits, chicken, seafood, red meat, dairy and nuts. If, for some reason, you have a limited diet and you decide to supplement, buy a B complex that offers the B nutrients in their body-ready, biologically active form. For example, methylfolate, not folic acid, and pyridoxal phosphate, not pyridoxine.

Most people don’t realize that some of the most important B vitamins are manufactured in the GI tract by our own microflora, and probiotics help restore healthy microflora. A deficiency in biotin, B12 and other Bs could indicate that you’ve stripped your gut of healthy probiotics. This contributes to diarrhea or, for some, constipation alternating with diarrhea.

If you have pins/needles or neuropathy, or you take the medication Metformin, then B vitamins are essential for you. ■

heltering at home for months safely away from the relentless coronavirus, Rachel Hunt peered out her kitchen window, wondering why so many cars were lining up on both sides of her quiet neighborhood street.

“What in the world is happening?” she asked her son, Bob. He quietly carried a chair out to her little porch, and she cautiously stepped out.

Springs. They were glad to be there to celebrate Hunt’s 102nd birthday and her 39th year of philanthropic service with the Assistance League.

“I was completely overwhelmed.

It’s unbelievable to be so kind to come for my birthday,” Hunt said.

“I’m thankful to see and speak to so many dear friends even at a safe distance.”

This pandemic isn’t Hunt’s first.

She was born in 1918 when the Spanish flu killed 50 million people globally, including an estimated 675,000 Americans. She was 11 when her parents “lost everything” during the Great Depression, and was 21 when World War II began.

Delicate but undaunted, Hunt is “blessed to be so old” and to have lived through many life-changing events. She attended Duke and Kent State universities and became a teacher. In 1940, she married Robert Hunt, Sr., a U.S. Air Force B-24 bomber pilot during World War II. They were together 73 years before he died in 2014.

Hunt described her 102nd birthday celebration as “absolutely unforgettable.” Cynthia Robin-

son, first violinist in the Colorado Springs Symphony/Philharmonic and Instrumental music director at Fountain Valley School, performed familiar upbeat tunes. Standing on the lawn wearing a plastic face shield, she played Irving Berlin’s “Always”—Hunt and her late husband’s favorite song.

Boundless, brave spirits safely gathered that uncommon day.

Hunt’s grit, grace and love outshines the pandemic gloom far beyond its time. Though only eyes were visible on shielded faces, they sparkled with joy and hope. ■

When life starts to feel like a bad reality show, keep moving!

S

ome days, does it feel like you’re crumbling under the weight of the world? You may be dealing with tough stuff in your personal life— relationship problems, health issues and money worries. Add those on top of the pandemic, fearful headlines and the political scene, and life begins to look and feel like a really bad reality show.

It’s easy to get depressed these days. World events can really bog us down—to a grinding stop if we’re not careful. Ask anyone who’s depressed and they’ll say they feel like they can’t put one foot in front of the other.

So what’s the answer? Just keep moving! You don’t have to feel good to move. My dad used to say, “It’s harder to hit a moving target.”

Remember when exercise routines became the key to good mental and physical health? Those 20-minute, three-times-a-week workouts might suit folks strong enough to jog or fast walk. But for others, it’s just not possible.

Fortunately, intense workouts aren’t the only answer.

In fact, the best answer is what we do after we exercise. No amount of exercise will undo the pathology that is sitting and remaining sedentary.

Movement helps everything from sore muscles to heartaches.

When we’re really feeling down, our inclination is not to move. But repeating the movements that make the muscles sore is a way to get past the aches quicker. Not closing down your romantic heart when it

Walking further than necessary to get a drink of water in the kitchen instead of the closer bathroom can interrupt tiredness from focusing and/or boredom.

At my house, I practice impulsiveness. When I think of something, I get up and do it. (I just vacuumed the living room rug.)

This means we might have to pause the remote—sometimes in critical areas.

At times when you feel frozen, afraid of making a mistake if you move, do what The Eagles say: “When I feel like giving up, I can hear a voice inside me say, ‘Do something! It’s too easy not to care.

You’re not ready for the rockin’ chair. Don’t wait too long—even if it’s wrong—you’ve got to do something.’”

Do whatever it is with more steps. ■

n spring, we watch leaf buds form on the bare branches of trees.

Throughout the season, the tree pulls up water and nutrients—trace minerals—from deep down in the soil, through its roots, and delivers those nutrients to the leaves so that they can produce sugar sap.

Through this exchange, a tree nourishes itself.

This is just a tiny snapshot of the miracle happening inside every tree. There’s also photosynthesis, which is when leaves catch the sun’s rays like solar panels, and transpiration, which is when the water evaporating off of the leaves helps the tree pull water up through its trunk. There’s also annual growth of new layers of wood and bark.

In a single tree, nature performs an orchestra of magic. But spring and summer don’t contain the whole show.

ACT TWO Fall and winter bring the second act—when trees return all those nutrients to the ground, where they decay, transform and prepare to be taken up again to facilitate life.

Full of carbon, fallen leaves are food for the critters below ground.

Earthworms and microbes rely on organic material like dead leaves for nourishment so they can do their part to create the nutrient-rich topsoil our garden plants thrive on.

Leaves help lighten heavy soils, enhancing their structure and creating space for life to thrive. Leaves also act like a warm sweater during winter, insulating bare ground and tender plants from the cold.

The more we can support a continuous, full-circle garden ecosystem, the more life we can facilitate in our gardens. Leaves and all organic matter (like grass clippings

WHAT TO DO WITH LEAVES Leaves make fantastic mulch. Use them to mulch your garden beds or bare grounds in your yard.

You can also experiment with composting. Layer your leaves with a nitrogen source, like manure or bone meal. Create a ratio of five parts leaves (carbon) to one part nitrogen. Make a layered pile and keep it moist. If you turn the heap each month, you’ll have a pile of great compost come spring.

If you have no use for leaves or

compost or just simply aren’t interested in the work, there are many great ways to gift your leaves to ensure they continue along in the cycle of life.

Give them to a neighbor to use as mulch or to line their chicken coops. Try reaching out to a local farm or gardening group to see if you can make someone’s day.

Modern Elder Academy Retreat to Cabo for new outlooks on aging

“Y

ou’re not getting older, you’re getting better!”

Such was the popular catchphrase back in the day, prompting serious eye rolls from a lot of seniors. But Modern Elder Academy goes beyond the cliché by actually giving older people new skills and outlooks on aging.

Chip Conley, the founder, calls the academy “a wisdom school for midlife, where wisdom is not taught, it’s shared.” He believes midlife isn’t a crisis, it’s a calling.

In March, Colorado resident Yolanda Del Hierro, 72, spent a week experiencing the academy at its home base in Baja California, Mexico. She learned about it from her brother, who went to Stanford with Conley and suggested she

attend one of the workshops. As he described the academy, Del Hierro, a holistic practitioner, felt strong, positive energy flood her. That night, she dreamed she was looking over a cliff and saw people sitting on a beach and talking.

“I knew without a doubt I was going to Mexico,” she said.

The next day she went to the website and saw pictures that mirrored her dream.

LEARN IN PARADISE Del Hierro applied for a scholarship, received the support and off she went. From the moment she landed in Cabo San Lucas, she was immersed in learning and luxury.

“It truly felt like heaven on earth!” she said.

tralian took part in the week-long retreat, all from varied professions and backgrounds (one man was a steelworker for 40 years). Since its founding in 2018, the academy has hosted folks from all over the world, from ages 30 to 78. So while it’s called “elder,” the academy is for anyone feeling anxiety about where they are in life.

Students have nothing required of them except to concentrate on unlearning old habits and learning new ways to see the world as elders. The rooms are cleaned thoroughly every day and other ordinary chores are taken care of.

Academy activities include an optional surfing lesson and trips into Todos Santos for meals and to explore the village, which has eluded the horde of tourists

common in other Mexican towns and cities. Though there are many small-group events to choose from, private nooks encourage solitary meditation. One exercise everyone participated in was stone balancing.

“The activity forces you to be in the moment, focused only on that task,” Del Hierro explained.

Such focus was the drive of the week-long getaway.

“We learned to let go—to let grace happen,” Del Hierro added. “I broke through perceived limitations that I had imposed on myself.”

Students also gained different perceptions about aging by paying attention to their bodies and changing their mindsets about getting older. Instead of thinking of their lives as practically over, they learned that they have a lot more to offer.

“I learned that I have an incredible support system. I am bolder and feel that I let go of limiting beliefs of myself,” she said.

Since returning home, Del Hierro has created an intention to embrace technology with ease, to stay in contact with her cohort on Zoom and to read Conley’s “Wisdom Well” blogs every day.

Meals are all served outside on covered, open-air decks with plenty of space for separation; activities have been redesigned to increase personal space, allowing attendees to regulate and control their own interactions; the campus has been optimized for open air and social distance interactions; and classes have shifted to mostly outside to create a more nature-based experience. Speak God’s word and be victorious

his is a very important year for all of us, so I want to look at one word from this verse: “victory.”

It doesn’t matter the challenge you face this year, keep this foremost in your mind.

Victory means to overcome and to conquer. Now is the time to keep moving forward in the pursuit of victory, expecting God to move in your life all while making preparations to succeed in every area. This year has given us many reasons to pursue the Lord this year and expect victory in our lives. In order to pursue your victory, you must have faith. Believe in God and focus on proclaiming His word without reservation. Remember that Almighty God is greater than any obstacle or challenge you face.

We’re all finding obstacles that stand in our way of victory. My husband and I need a victory in several areas of our life right now.

Because of our faith in God, we are preparing to succeed in those areas even though it doesn’t always look like things are in our favor.

“See how the farmer waits expectantly for the precious harvest from the land.”

As we speak God’s word, be like the farmer expecting to reap your harvest in victory. My husband and I have 10 children and 25 grandchildren, so there’s always something or someone we need to be speaking the word over or believing God for. It’s exciting to see how faithfulness in believing His word comes to pass in their lives.

The key is to never give up!

Continue to be steadfast in pursuing your victory. Settle in your heart and mind that God will keep His word.

Do not limit God with your thinking. How we think can change the outcome of our prayers. He waits to hear your words and fulfill them.

Is it simpler than a computer?

he topic of this month’s column was prompted by a reader question, which I always appreciate.

Joy asked: “Dear Adam, I’m old enough to have relied on a typewriter for many years. I purchased a Chromebook, which has many nice document features, but is there something simpler? I just want to write letters, articles, reports and print them. I don’t understand the capabilities and features of the commonly referred to ‘word processor.’ Is this a separate electronic device I can purchase? As an elderly woman, I appreciate your patience and understanding.”

Oh, boy! What a great question.

I grew up with a love of typewriters. I think they’re beautiful (Google “Oliver Typewriter Company” and you’ll see what I mean).

I also grew up with an appreciation for the ability to compile words on a page almost as quickly as those words come into your mind.

Generally, kids today aren’t even taught how to type in school anymore. They’re raised using a QWERTY keyboard. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen parents hover over their teens and ask, “When did you learn to type?”

Today, it’s a skill that’s acquired alongside learning to speak.

“Word processing” is a term used to define the entire process of creating a document. It’s a concept, a physical device, and a type of software. In the days of a typewriter, you typed letters and reports, or you filled out predesigned forms.

Word processing refers to both the typing and creation of the forms.

The devices once known as word processors are now obsolete.

Typewriters are still being manufactured, but computers have taken over the role of word processing machines that allowed you to create a document on a screen before the words were printed on paper.

Today, the term “word processor” generally refers to a program that allows you to type, create documents and build forms.

There are a few online word processors that eliminate the complexities of form creation and focus primarily on typing and document creation. I often recommend Hemingway (www.hemingwayapp. com) for people who just want to put words on a page. The online version is free and it’s only $10 for the offline app.

The biggest difference between “word processing” and “typewriter-ing” is the workflow.

With a computer, the process is backwards. Start by putting the words on the screen. Next edit the document. If you can create, save and print a document, you are 80 percent there. Last, add embellishments like bold, underline, italics, indent, etc.

Once you have mastered these basics, you’ll find that you’ve learned important concepts that will help you customize the look and feel of the document you’re creating.

I find that most people get overwhelmed by what technology can do more than they get flustered by what it actually does. Don’t think about all of the things your word processing program can do. Just focus on the things you want to do. ■

Stuck mulling over the Medicare muddle?

Here are some crucial tips

I

’ve been writing about Medicare for years, so I wasn’t particularly affronted when, not long after my 64th birthday, I started receiving advertising circulars about Medicare, Medicare Advantage and supplemental plans. Whether you are a newly enrolling senior or have been enrolled in Medicare for years, you do need to understand the system and the changes that happen nearly every year.

WHERE TO START Your first decision, and the most important, is deciding whether to expand your upcoming Medicare coverage either through Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medigap (supplemental Medicare).

The best way to begin is with “Medicare & You: The Official U.S. Government Handbook,” available at www.medicare.gov.

Medicare’s confusion stems from its being cobbled together over the last 55 years by many political administrations. When approved by President Lyndon Johnson in 1965, it included only Part A (hospital) and Part B (doctor visits) coverage.

In the 1980s, supplemental private insurance in the form of Medigap plans were offered to cover some of the deductibles and copays. The Medigap plans currently available in most states are A, B, D, G, K, L, M and N. Each plan offers a different level of coverage. Two other plans, C and F, are no longer available to new enrollees.

DRUG COVERAGE Part D Drug coverage is different in an important way. Drug coverage began in 2003. Every year since then, the insurance companies tinker with their list of covered drugs.

Because of this, every October, it’s a good idea to determine which plan is least expensive and most convenient for your menu of prescriptions.

Unlike Medigap plans, you can choose a new drug plan each year with no penalty. One caveat is that if you require a new prescription during that year, you’ll be at the mercy of your current drug plan.

When choosing your Medicare plan, start by asking your doctors and your friends what plan(s) they recommend. Perhaps the clinic or hospital with whom your doctor is associated only accepts one or two plans. If your friends have had good experiences with their plans, consider those. But understand that what works for your friends may not always work for you.

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS? You may still have a lot of questions after you’ve devoured the official guide. I’ve also found the book, “Medicare for Dummies,” to be very helpful.

A few final suggestions to urge you on your way: • Your initial Medicare enrollment period begins the third month before your 65th birthday month and finishes at the end of the third month after your birthday month. That gives you seven months to make some pretty momentous decisions.

• You can sign up later, at retirement, if your current coverage through an employer is at least as comprehensive as Medicare

(“creditable coverage”). Otherwise, you may face a permanent financial penalty.

• This year’s Open Enrollment Period—when current insureds can choose a new MA, drug, or supplemental plan—is October 15 through December 7, 2020.

Coverage starts January 1, 2021.

• Don’t forget you can always contact a local Medicare insurance sales advisor.

If you’re approaching your 65th birthday, make some time for Medicare decisions. Despite my background in financial planning, I still find the choices complex and confusing. ■

Breaking bread: Summit Glen residents and staff are one big happy family

ot only do Allen and Natalie Miller serve as managers for the Summit Glen Gracious Retirement Living, they are residents as well.

The live-in managers, along with the 140 residents and 30 staff members, consider themselves one giant, happy family.

“It’s a family atmosphere. It’s a friendly, warm building—you can feel it when you walk in,” Natalie said. “We all eat together as a family. We break bread together.”

Summit Glen, located at 4825 Old Farm Dr. in Colorado Springs, is owned by Hawthorn Senior Living, which operates 80 senior communities throughout the country and a few in Canada. The Millers have worked at Summit Glen since June 2015 and were recognized as Hawthorn’s Managers of the Year in 2017.

Living at the property enables the Millers to respond to residents in need of aid at any time of day.

“We’re first responders. There are pull cords in every apartment in the living rooms, bathrooms and kitchens,” Natalie said. “Even if someone has an emergency at 2 a.m., we’re there for them.”

Assistant managers Scott and Kelley Vaughn also live onsite.

“It’s peace of mind for family members, so they know Mom’s not alone anymore, and there are people there for her,” Allen said.

The independent living facility is all-inclusive. Weekly housekeeping and linen services are provided. All utilities, including basic cable televi-

sion, are covered as well.

“The only thing not included is the phone bill,” Allen mentioned.

Meals are provided restaurant style in a country club-like setting.

Executive Chef Ryan Boyd, a former chef at the Broadmoor, prepares three meals a day from scratch.

“The food is over the top,” Natalie said.

Meal time has changed slightly due to COVID-19. Usually four residents sit together at a table during meals. Now, only two per table are allowed for social distancing reasons, according to Allen.

OPEN TO VISITORS Summit Glen houses 120 apartments, along with a library, media room, chapel, beauty salon and an exercise room. A full-time activity coordinator keeps residents active with outings on Wednesdays and shopping on Fridays. The facility provides bus transportation.

COVID has put a damper on outings temporarily. Residents used to visit Red Rocks, museums and concerts. For now, picnics and occasional restaurant trips are par for the course.

Summit Glen is at a point in the pandemic where residents can have visitors and see family members. All visitors to the facility are screened and must have their temperature checked.

Keeping the residents engaged is top priority for the Millers and their staff. Summit Glen offers a variety

of activities that benefit mind and body, including stretch exercising every morning, yoga, memory enhancement classes, bingo three times a week, a cribbage club, book club and cooking club. Physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech services are also available.

Summit Glen is built into a hill, which makes ground-level access easy for all residents.

“Every floor, somewhere, winds up on the ground floor,” Allen said.

“Even the third floor goes out to the ground level.”

Residents get their exercise from simply walking the outdoor path, which is three-quarters of a mile. If a resident walks every floor—door to door—they’ll get a mile in, according to Allen.

Summit Glen is also furry-friend friendly, and there is no deposit required for a cat or dog.

“We’re more involved with the community. The commute is great—right down the hall,” Allen said. “We’re making a difference in peoples’ lives and that feels good.”

The making of Peter Parker How Stan Lee’s unlikely teenage hero became a pop icon

t was the late 1950s, and comic book sales were stagnating. So was the enthusiasm of Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee, following two decades in his high-pressure, often-chaotic world of work. He later recalled to Rolling Stone, “I got to thinking, why not try something different? Something I’d like to read.

No more cardboard characters and predictable stories where the hero is 100 percent good and always wins, and the bad guy is 100 percent bad and doomed to lose…”

Lee eventually came up with a unique idea—a fairy tale for the modern teenager.

“My formula became: Let’s suspend disbelief for a moment and accept that a character can fly through the air, climb on walls or have the strength of 50 men. What would his life be like if he lived in today’s world?”

In August 1962, Lee introduced Spider-Man to the world, a character supposedly inspired both by Lee having watched a spider crawl up a wall, as well as the memory of one of his favorite childhood comic books, “The Spider, Master of Men.” Spider-Man is a timid, nerdy, genius-level teenager named Peter Parker. As you well know, a bite from a radioactive spider resulted in numerous mutations in his body, including the proportionate strength and agility of the arachnid as well as a “spider sense” that warns him of nearby danger.

His new body has the agility, balance and bodily coordination beyond that of the finest human athletes. But Parker himself still remains a teenager with everyday problems that include allergy attacks, money woes, acne issues, dandruff flakes and striking out with girls.

Parker adopts a red-and-blue costume as well as the name Spider-Man in order to conceal his true identity. He also creates and wears a pair of wrist-worn “web shooters” to approximate a spider’s web-spinning abilities, forming sticky ropes of webbing. Parker spins such webs when needing to capture bad guys, some of whom became the world’s most notorious comic-book criminals: Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Scorpion, Shocker the Lizard, Venom and Carnage, to name a few.

Because comic book kids had previously been portrayed as mere sidekicks to larger-than-life protagonists, Parker’s character was quickly embraced by teenage readers. Spider-Man soared to unimagined heights when given his own series in March 1963. Eventually, Lee’s character surpassed even Superman in sales, reigning as the world’s largest-selling comic periodical for several years.

When Lee first described the idea to his publisher, Martin Goodman, Goodman reportedly sneered, saying “Yech! Who wants to read about spiders? People hate spiders!

I can’t see that as a name for a hero or a series at all!”

Perhaps he couldn’t, but loyal and enthusiastic Stan Lee fans certainly could. ■

Dear Ms. Kitty: I see posters for missing cats and worry about losing mine. My Lucy is an indoor cat, but she gets curious about the outdoors, and I worry she’ll slip out the door. Would it be smart to put a collar and tags on her? Signed, Concerned in Cragmor Dear Concerned: A collar and tag on Lucy might help identify her if someone sees her outside. While most cats hide from strangers, if Lucy is found and taken into a house or to a local shelter, a tag with contact information would help.

In addition to identification, here are more ways cat collars come in handy: • Attached RFID tags can open a cat flap or a feeding dish • Attached bells or brightly colored tubes announce the cat to other animals, birds and wildlife • Attached current rabies tags assure finders that records are up to date • They can carry and dispense calming pheromones or natural pest control If you’re concerned about Lucy getting out, you may want to train her not to door dart. You can teach her to wait on a designated spot, away from the door, with clicker training. Or, reward her for staying out of the doorway by placing a container of treats or toys near the door and tossing them across the room to distract her when you’re coming and going.

Harness training is a safe way to satisfy Lucy’s curiosity about the outdoors. When taught properly, the harness-trained cat will wait to be invited or carried across the threshold and not dash outside.

on Lucy, you want one that will be comfortable and designed to release if she gets it caught on something to avoid choking. Some collars are stretchy, while others have closure devices that will release with moderate pressure.

The collar should fit snugly but also allow you to place two fingers underneath for comfort.

If she initially reacts by acting fearful of or biting the collar, use a lightweight training collar. These are made with very thin but strong climbing rope with breakaway clasps. Once she adjusts, you can graduate to a wider collar.

It’s important to supervise her after fitting with a collar to reassure her and observe any problems.

Check the fit of the collar frequently, especially for growing kittens.

If you decide to add tags, make sure they’re small and do not hinder her. I like tags made from lightweight plastic or rubber so they won’t clank against her bowl.

Collars can fall off, so be sure that Lucy is microchipped and your contact information is current with the microchip company. Many lost cats are reunited with their humans when their implanted microchip is scanned by a local veterinarian or shelter.

Please make sure to microchip Lucy first. Then you can decide if a collar is right for her and you. ■

Could it be canine hearing loss?

HEARING LOSS IS NOT I THE END OF THE WORLD thought he said, “Let’s tie one on,” which was a strange suggestion from my husband on a Monday afternoon.

“Tequila or rum?” I offered.

He stared at me blankly. “I said that the toothpaste is all gone.”

Hearing loss is a problem in our house—and it’s not just mine. Our 13-year-old dog Chip no longer comes when he is called. Ernie, also 13, has taken up preventive barking to keep intruders at bay. And though I must repeat myself frequently to my husband, he insists his hearing is fine—it’s my voice that’s the problem.

It’s ironic that the only creature whose hearing remains intact is Johnny’s, our oldest dog at 14. Our old guy still comes trotting to the kitchen when he hears the refrigerator door open, or magically appears by my side when I stick my fingers into the box of dog biscuits.

It’s well-documented that our canines outperform us in the auditory realm. Their ability to detect higher-pitched sounds and softer noises from a long distance away is astounding. When I worked at a veterinary clinic, we often knew an owner was minutes away from our parking lot by the sudden agitation of his/her dog in its kennel. But what if your canine starts becoming startled or aggressive when you wake him from a deep sleep? Or is suddenly disobeying you when he’s always been such a good boy? A trip to the vet is in order to rule out anything serious when our dog has

Get a personalized dog tag—which you can buy and have engraved locally— that has his/her name, your phone number and the word “deaf” on it.

Use hand gestures to get him/ her to follow you or go outside.

And always remember to say “I love you” a little louder and closer to their ears. ■
