JUNE 2023

WELCOME TO LGGSSPORT

Welcome back to the Sports Newsletter and thank you for dropping by to see what our incredible students have been doing since the start of 2023.

As part of the curriculum, KS3 students have access to a range of indoor sport opportunities. Alongside increasing their fitness levels, this develops creative skills, resilience, and personal responsibility.

Year 7 have taken part in a Yoga and Champion Mindset unit, where they have been learning the importance of self-care, understanding the value of yoga as a tool to improve focus and concentration in lessons, as well as practising relaxation techniques.

Year 8 have been Rockin’ and Rolling in their dance unit, as well as gaining an understanding of the differences in body composition during theory lessons.

Year 9 have been celebrating individual differences and creating choreography to ‘Everyone is talking about Jamie’, using dance to share their own stories about acceptance, strength, and mental toughness. They also took part in a problemsolving unit, which challenged and pushed individuals out of their comfort zone by using high ropes and climbing frames in obstacle courses. Outdoors, we have been developing football and netball skills by adapting game

situations. These have fed into some of the extra-curricular clubs and fixtures throughout the term. Year 10 have all completed their Leadership lessons, where everyone that opted for the Award planned and coached a session of their choice for their peers. In their other core PE lesson, they have had the opportunity to play full-sided games in a range of sports from netball to tag rugby.

Year 11 have been taking part in Inter-house tournaments including the fitness suite challenge, football, cone ball, netball, and tag rugby, to name but a few.

We have had huge success in extra-curricular competitions, and participation numbers are continuing to impress - as you will find out in the following Sports News pages where we have included information about some of our sports highlights.

We can now enjoy some warmer weather, and a change in season means a change in sporting provision. Tennis, athletics, rounders and cricket will be introduced and we shall. Don’t forget to pack the sun-cream!

DANCE

05.2023

A group of students entered and won a Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham ‘Virtual Dance’ competition. As winners, they were asked to represent the area at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool during May. Congratulations to Kavya Suresh & Srainya Arakel, who choreographed the dance and to the team for all their hard work!

The team included:

Sarisha Oli

Mae Weldon

Charlotte Jolleys

Rehab Burhan

Udita Chatterjee

We created a Bollywood fusion dance that incorporated the theme of ‘Saving the environment’. Blending a mix of classic Bollywood steps, which everyone was able to achieve, and with the goal of highlighting the impact on nature. In the dance we used 'trash', scattered across the floor, to represent litter and we infused a popular Bollywood turn step to represent the easiness in which we can take little steps to help stop climate change. In the final song we used bright coloured cloths to represent how we can recycle

of global emissions. The bright colours and intricate designs of the clothes also add to the fusion of Indian Bollywood dance. This dance revealed the different layers that it takes to save the environment and was represented through the different songs, different beats and through ambience. Overall, it highlighted how, through little steps, we can start to save the environment.

MY YEAR 7 ACHIEVEMENTS

Olivia Corvi 7.4

In school I have been to:

• two netball matches for the school team (at LGGS)

Out of school I have been to:

• A street dance show (with Jennifer's Dancers) at the Grand Theatre - a team of 15-20 aged 9-16 years old.

• Swimming at Lancaster University since we moved from Italy and achieved the highest-level - Stage 9.

• Skiing (February half-term), I participated in many races down a toboggan track with the instructor and came 1st - 3 times in a row. That is all my achievements. I hope to do more sports and clubs later in the year and am currently training for another street dance show.

INDIVIDUAL SPORT

Many of students are very keen sports competitors outside of school. You can read about just some of their impressive and varied achievements …

master Ronnie Green and Sandy Holt.

I didn’t win as it was an inter-club and in inter-clubs there is no win or lose, it is a draw - even if you technically win.

CURLING

Marianna Ward, Year 10

I have been playing curling for nearly two years, since a friend and I tried out winter sports at The Flowerbowl, Preston.

I was lucky enough to be spotted by the former Vice-President of Preston Curling Club, now President of the English Curling Association, who put me in contact with a team from Kent and Cambridge who were looking for a fourth player to join their team. I travelled to Junior National Women's Championships in Kent in late March and, in the second competition I ever played, we came second! A great achievement considering I'd never even met the skip (captain

of the team) until the start of the competition.

Since the National Women’s Championships I have been training non-stop and competing in bonspiels (curling competitions).

In January 2023, I competed in the Mixed Doubles Adults Championships with a boy from Lancaster Royal Grammar School. It was a great experience and I got to play on new ice in Dumfries. A friend, who also plays in the same team as me, won the competition and is going to the World Championships in South Korea. In the Women's section only one team entered my team! Therefore, there are no National Championships, and instead we are going straight to World B Championships this winter in Lojha, Finland. I have been training more and more, ever since we found out, but it is extremely difficult for the rest of my team as The Flowerbowl is currently the only dedicated curling rink in the entirety of England.

I am very excited to be representing England for the rest of the year and looking forward to competing in lots of competitions which take place in England, Scotland and Finland.

I recently competed in Preston Curling Club's Novice Bonspiel at The Flowerbowl with a randomly selected team. The weekend was very tough but we pushed through and won all but one of the matches, putting us in second place overall. We won a hamper each, which was donated by Barton Grange. There were also separate competitions including

a sociable and fun sport. I also competed in a Christmas Bonspiel during December with Team Mcloughlin and we all dressed up in fancy dress!

Despite there being lots of junior competitors at The Flowerbowl, there is only one girl, apart from myself, that is part of the Preston Curling Club's junior squad, the rest are boys and, I am trying to encourage more girls to participate in the sport. It would also be better for the sport if there was more competition in this category, especially when it comes to the national championships. It would be wonderful if more girls from LGGS would join as there are National Schools' Championships to compete in also. There are currently only one or two schools from the Kent area involved, but if a few more LGGS students joined, we would have enough for a girls’ team. We could also have a mixed team by recruiting from other local schools.

It is a truly an amazing, unique and inclusive sport which has become my hobby, passion and life.

People can watch or take part in the junior sessions at The Flowerbowl on Mondays between 5.30pm and 7pm and on Sundays from 10am until 11.30am.

If you are interested in joining, please catch me for a chat or email me, as I am always open for questions and conversations regarding the sport. I can bring my curling equipment in to school to showcase to students and explain how everything works and believe that my coaches

enough interest. I hope this news helps raise awareness of curling. Videos of the sport are available should you wish to see them.

GOLF Sofia McGhie, Year 11 2022-2023

During September 2022, Sofia was invited to join the Scottish Girls’ Golf National Performance Training Squad at St Andrews. Sofia had a very successful tournament in the Stephen Gallacher Foundation where she came 2nd at Fairmont Golf Course, St Andrews. In February, Sofia won the Robert Rock Junior Masters U18 Girls’ event in Portugal. Sophia took part in the Scottish Golf U18 Winter Training schedule and this involved monthly meetings at

girls form England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales to be invited

for a 2 day selection-workshop for the Vagliano U16 girls’ team which will play against Europe. Sofia really enjoyed the
