Community: Our Superpower Community: Our Superpower

We didn’t have a choice, We didn’t choose to leave, One day we were home, Next, we were running.

Not a holiday, Not an adventure, But an escape. A hope for freedom. A hope for safety, A hope for life.

I arrived with no map, Just memories folded like paper, In my pocket, A name that felt foreign in every mouth, A silence sitting heavy on my shoulders.

School.

School was the scariest part, Everyone already had friends, Inside jokes too, Uniforms that fit, That weren’t mismatched.

I had the innocence of a child, Brimming with questions. Trying to make the most of it all, Most of the already difficult plight.

They stared, I stared back. An outcast, That’s who they saw.

They said, “Go back home, you don’t belong. Your name’s too weird, your words sound wrong?”

But thenSomeone offered me a seat at lunch. Said “you can sit here if you want” Like it was nothing, They didn’t know that was everything. Then someone smiled. Shared a joke. Passed me the ball. Held the door.

Small things, you may say. But when you’ve lost a whole world, Small things feel like magic.

Community, it found me first Not all at once –But in pieces.

Celebrating Refugee Week Poetry Competition

That one girl who lent me a pencil, With a smile on her face. That neighbour who waved each morning.

The voices that said;

“You are strong for all you’ve done, You shine bright, you are someone, You’re not alone, we’ve got your back, Your story matters, you belong”

Slowly things changed. I found a sports club, A library card, A teacher who actually listened, Who said,

“You don’t have to get it right first timeJust try”

And I tried.

Because they saw meNot as a stranger, But as someone worth knowing.

I still miss homethe food, the noise, my cousins, the sunbut I’ve started laughing here too.

But bit by bit, This place became less cold.

Teaching me how to belongNot by changing who I am, But by making space for it, Their kindness was loud and strong, Louder than the fear, Stronger than the loss.

And now in my heart, I start to hear

More from the voice of hope, And less from fear,

A voice that says, I’m more than pain, More than the loss, or the harsh rain, I am mix of then and now,

A future shaped by strength somehow, Even though I’ve walked through fire, And crossed the sea, That there’s something strong left in me.

We can be heroes. Even without the capes, We can lift each other, We can hold each other, We can see each other, We can speak up, When someone feels small.

Together, strong through any weatherWe rise, we heal, We build together.

So, here’s to voices brave and true, To old and young, to me and you. For when we care, include, empowerCommunity becomes our superpower.

Community: Our Superpower Community: Our Superpower

In LGGS we learn, and we grow, With friends and teachers, we all know.

No matter the time, lessons, lunch or break, Each moment is enjoyed with the memories we make.

In LGGS, we each begin, Setting goals for the future, to try and win,

Whether it’s on the field playing sports, In the gym or tennis courts.

In LGGS we flourish strong, Our school, our space where we all belong.

Friendships can flourish like flowers in spring, And classrooms hum with each idea we bring.

In LGGS we discover our futures, unknown, Where seeds of potential are individually grown.

A diverse community from years 7 to 13, A diverse community, where we are each seen.
