IIS: samen nadenken over erfskip

IIS nodigt de mienskip uit om na te denken over ‘erfskip’: wat laten we na als voorouders van de volgende generaties? In IIS houden verenigingen zichzelf en de mienskip een spiegel voor. Is de manier waarop het verenigingsleven is ingericht, één die standhoudt in een veranderende wereld?

De in totaal 39 evenementen, georganiseerd door de mienskip, met steun van Arcadia, vinden veelal plaats op en rond ijsbanen. De ijsbaan staat enerzijds symbool voor de verbonden mienskip. Samen de baan en daarmee de ijscultuur onderhouden. Anderzijds is de klimaatcrisis pijnlijk zichtbaar: natuurijs is niet langer vanzelfsprekend. Jaarlijks de ijzers uit het vet halen om het ijs op te gaan, is een smeltende traditie. Waar een event niet op een ijsbaan past, dient deze toch als metafoor. Een eens zo’n levendige plek in de winter, die tegenwoordig steeds minder, misschien wel nooit weer, functie heeft als ontmoetingsplaats voor schaatsliefhebbers en ijsgenieters.

Hoe laat je de wereld – met haar veranderende klimaat – dan tóch een beetje beter achter voor de volgende generaties? Het initiatief van alle IIS-events kwam vanuit verenigingen, burgers en collectieven.

De bubbel te buiten

Eén van de voorwaarden om een IIS-activiteit onder de vlag van Arcadia uit te voeren, is: doe het samen, en niet alléén met de eigen club. Welke school, welke andere band, vereniging, toneelclub wil meedoen? Door aansluiting te vinden buiten de eigen bubbel, ontstaat en groeit de mienskip. Naast de wens om een sterk cultureel evenement neer te zetten, blijkt binnen het IISprogramma het proces ernaartoe minstens zo belangrijk. Nieuwe verbindingen ontstaan. Meer dan eens strijken deelnemers na het repeteren neer voor een gezamenlijk pilsje. En zo ontstaan gesprekken over actuele onderwerpen, die verband houden met de IIS-activiteit waaraan zij deelnemen. Het stikstofbeleid. Politieke teleurstellingen. De klimaatproblematiek. Elkaar fysiek ontmoeten, ontdekken dat dezelfde issues je dwars zitten. Dat je met z’n allen in hetzelfde schuitje zit. En daar sámen wat aan gaat doen. Want iets moois, iets beters doorgeven aan de volgende generatie, dat willen we allemaal. Dát is ook IIS.

Mienskip klinkt door in het gehele culturele programma van Arcadia. We delen enkele hoogtepunten, van groots en fier tot raak en intiem.

IIS: reflecting together on inheritance

IIS invites the mienskip to reflect on ‘erfskip’, or inheritance: what are we leaving behind as ancestors of the next generations? In IIS, associations hold up a mirror to themselves and to the mienskip. Is the way in which the voluntary sector is structured one that holds up in a changing world?

A total of 39 events, organized by the community and supported by Arcadia, take place on and around ice rinks. On the one hand, the ice rink is a symbol of the connected mienskip. Maintaining the rink together and thus the ice culture. On the other hand, the climate crisis is painfully visible: natural ice is no longer a certainty. Dusting off the skates every year to go out on the ice is a tradition that is now melting. Where an event does not fit on an ice rink, it still serves as a metaphor. Once such a lively place in the winter, which nowadays has less and less, perhaps never again, functions as a meeting place for skaters and ice lovers.

How do you then leave the world – with its changing climate – a little better for the next generations? The initiative of all IIS events came from associations, citizens, and collectives.

Outside YOUR OWN bubble

One of the conditions for carrying out an IIS activity under the flag of Arcadia is: to do it together, and not only with your own club. Which school, which other group, association, or theatre club wants to join? By finding a connection outside one’s own bubble, the mienskip is created and grows.

As well as the desire to organise a strong cultural event, the process towards achieving it turns out to be just as important within the IIS programme. New connections are created. More than once, after rehearsals, participants settle down for a beer together. This creates discussions on topical issues related to the IIS activity in which they are participating. The nitrogen policy. Political disappointments. The climate problem. Meeting each other physically, discovering that you are bothered by the same issues. That you’re all in the same boat. And will do something about it, together. Because something beautiful, something better to pass on to the next generation, that’s what we all want. That’s IIS, too. Mienskip resonates throughout the cultural programme of Arcadia. We share some highlights, from grand and proud to raw and intimate.

1. FrIIS festival in Oudega Súdwest (IIS)

Een mooi dorp maak je samen, is het credo hier. Naast een ontzettend geslaagd festival, waarbij hitlijsttoppers van weleer (‘van toen er nog ijs lag’) in een Friestalig jasje worden gestoken, ontstaat er in aanloop naar het hoogtepunt ook een bewustwording. Als we beter voor elkaar zouden zorgen, dan zouden we met z’n allen minder gebruikmaken van de zorg. FrIIS is niet een intern feestje; geen evenement waar alleen dorpsbewoners welkom zijn. Oudega nodigt mensen uit de wijde omtrek uit om naar hun mooie dorp te komen. Om de energie die ‘iets samen doen’ geeft, te delen.

FrIIS festival in Oudega Súdwest (IIS)

The motto here is: you make a village beautiful together. In addition to a very successful festival, where chart toppers of yesteryear (‘from when there was still ice’) are put in a Frisian-language jacket, there is also awareness in the run-up to the climax. If we all took better care of each other, we would all make less use of the health services. FrIIS is not an internal party; not an event where only villagers are welcome. Oudega invites people from all over the world to come to their beautiful village. To share the energy that ‘doing something together’ creates.

2. Beammebern in Workum (IIS)

Een muzikaal sprookje opgevoerd in het park van Workum. Het stuk behandelt op een heel toegankelijke manier de relatie tussen de mens en de natuur. Beammebern vertelt over een koning die niet van groen houdt en leeft in de Grijze Stad. Natuurlijk heeft het sprookje een goed (en groen) einde. Voor dit project zocht Brassband Crescendo in Workum de samenwerking met lokale acteurs en schoolkinderen. Zowel het verhaal als het prachtige decor spreekt bij jong en oud tot de verbeelding.

3. Uitgesteld Geluk in 100 tuinen

Leeuwarden UNESCO City of Literature brengt het literaire project Uitgesteld geluk. Waarbij elke Arcadia-dag in steeds een andere idyllische tuin een nieuw verhaal wordt voorgelezen. De verhalen zijn geschreven door 100 schrijvers vanuit de hele wereld. Van de 100 tuinen liggen er 81 in een dorp. De tuineigenaren geven aan ‘hun’ Uitgesteld gelukmoment een eigen draai. Met een hapje en drankje, een rondleiding door de tuin of soms zelfs live muziek. In die tuinen ontdekken we dat verhalen zaadjes zijn waaruit telkens weer andere verhalen ontspruiten – en mooie gesprekken over wat een verhaal losmaakt. Over wat we herkennen of waar we nog niet eerder over hadden nagedacht. Zo worden we elke dag verrast door een nieuw verhaal, maar ook door elkaar; de aandacht, betrokkenheid, creativiteit, humor, interessante vragen en alle eigen verhalen die bezoekers, voorlezers, tuineigenaren, vrijwilligers en fotografen meenamen en met elkaar delen. Uitgesteld geluk is geïnspireerd op de 14e eeuwse verhalenbundel Decamerone van Giovanni Boccaccio. In tien dagen worden 100 verhalen verteld door tien jonge mensen, op de vlucht voor de pest die in Florence woedde.

Blijf samen dingen doen

Energie krijg je van samen iets ondernemen. Dat magische gevoel houd je vast door het te blijven doen. Alleen zo geef je het door aan de volgende generaties. Van schoolkinderen tot theatermakers en van brassband tot borduurclub én alle bezoekers aan de evenementen: voel je aangemoedigd om je blijvend aan te sluiten bij de groeiende mienskip.

2. Beammebern in Workum (IIS)

A musical fairytale performed in the park of Workum. The play addresses the relationship between man and nature in a very accessible way. Beammebern tells the story of a king who does not like green and lives in the Grey City. Of course, the fairytale has a good (and green) ending. For this project, Brassband Crescendo sought collaboration with local actors and school children in Workum. Both the story and the beautiful scenery appeal to young and old alike.

3. Happiness Delayed in 100 gardens

Leeuwarden UNESCO City of Literature presents the literary project Happiness Delayed. Every day of Arcadia, a new story is read aloud in a different idyllic garden. The stories were written by 100 writers from all over the world. Of the 100 gardens, 81 are in villages. The garden owners give ‘their’ moment of Happiness Delayed a twist of their own. With a snack and drink, a tour of the garden, or sometimes even live music. In these gardens, we discover that stories are seeds from which other stories spring up over and over again – and beautiful conversations about what a story unlocks. About what we recognise, or what we hadn’t thought of before. Every day, we are surprised by a new story, but also by each other; the attention, involvement, creativity, humour, interesting questions, and all the stories that the visitors, readers, garden owners, volunteers, and photographers took with them and shared with each other. Happiness Delayed is inspired by the 14th-century collection of stories Decamerone by Giovanni Boccaccio. Over ten days, 100 stories were told by ten young people, fleeing the plague that raged in Florence.

Keep doing things together

You get energy from doing something together. You hold on to that magical feeling by continuing to do it. This is the only way to pass it on to the next generations. From schoolchildren to theatre makers and from brass bands to embroidery clubs and all visitors at the events: feel encouraged to join the growing mienskip.

Onderzoek door de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

Tijdens Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 is de basis gelegd voor de mienskipsmethode, de methode waarin vanuit een democratische insteek wordt gewerkt aan een sterke, duurzame en aantrekkelijke samenleving, waar mensen gedijen in een brede welvaart en iedereen zich gezien en betrokken voelt. In het programma van Arcadia werken we de mienskipsmethode de komende jaren verder uit en passen we deze toe in verschillende cultuurtriënnales. Het is de bedoeling dat de mienskip met kunstenaars, denkers en makers aan de slag gaat met de toekomstige uitdagingen om Fryslân als rurale regio beter, mooier en duurzamer achter te laten voor de generaties na ons.

In een promotieonderzoek gaat een onderzoeker aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen aan de slag met de mienskipsmethode, op basis van de recente ervaringen. In hoeverre draagt deze werkwijze op korte en middellange termijn (blijvend) bij aan betrokkenheid van inwoners? Daarbij kijken we naar betrokkenheid bij sociale en ruimtelijke vraagstukken in de eigen leefomgeving. Leidt deze betrokkenheid tot veranderingen in handelen en gedrag?

Vanuit heel Europa kijken organisaties naar Fryslân: Hoe kan een cultureel programma tienduizenden mensen in beweging krijgen? We weten dat – in Fryslân – de mienskipsmethode de sociale cohesie en leefbaarheid goed doet. Maar is deze ook toepasbaar in andere regio’s, met een andere identiteit en cultuur? Door dit wetenschappelijk te onderbouwen, hopen we onze mienskipsmethode nog beter in te zetten en ook te delen met anderen. En zo ook buiten de eigen grenzen te werken aan goed voorouderschap.

Research by the University of Groningen

Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 laid the foundation for the mienskip method, the method in which people work on a strong, sustainable, and attractive society from a democratic perspective, where people thrive in expansive prosperity, and where everyone feels seen and involved. In the Arcadia programme, we will further develop the mienskip method in the coming years and apply it in various art and cultural events. The intention is for the mienskip to work with artists, thinkers, and creators to tackle the future challenges of leaving Fryslân as a rural region better, more beautiful, and more sustainable for the generations to come.

A researcher at the University of Groningen is working on a doctoral research project exploring the mienskip method, based on recent experiences. To what extent does this method (permanently) contribute to the involvement of residents in the short and medium term? We look at involvement in social and spatial issues in our own living environment. Does this involvement lead to changes in actions and behaviour?

Organisations from all over Europe are looking at Fryslân: How can a cultural programme get tens of thousands of people moving? We know that – in Fryslân – the mienskip method is good for social cohesion and quality of life. But is this also applicable in other regions, with different identities and cultures? By researching this academically, we substantiate the effectiveness of the mienskip method and come up with a shareable method, so that the principles of good ancestry can also be applied beyond the borders of Fryslân. And also to work on good ancestry beyond one’s own borders.
