Hoe Zijn we een goede voorouder? 1 what makes a Good ancestor?

Arcadia is een 100 dagen durende cultuurtriënnale in de provincie Fryslân. Samen met internationale kunstenaars en de Friese mienskip maken we een programma waarbij één vraag centraal staat: Hoe geven we onze aarde en samenleving door aan de generaties die na ons komen? In de vele voorstellingen, exposities en andere uitingen van Arcadia worden vragen gesteld over wat goed voorouderschap precies is. Door daarin zoveel mogelijk mensen een stem te geven, ontstaat een rijk en gelaagd verhaal.

Arcadia is a 100-day cultural triennial in the province of Fryslân. Together with international artists and the Frisian mienskip, we create a programme with one question at its heart: How do we pass on our earth and society to the generations that come after us? Arcadia’s many performances, exhibitions, and other manifestations ask questions about what good ancestry means. Giving as many people as possible a voice creates a rich and layered story.

De gedachte van het Arcadiaprogramma komt voort uit een regel van het Friese volkslied:

‘Wy sjonge it bêste lân fan d’ierde’. Of het nu een koor is of een stadion vol voetbalsupporters dat deze hymne zingt, je vóelt het. De trots van de Friezen. Op hun cultuur, hún land. Het beste land. Het is waar: het is goed toeven in het Noorden. De kwaliteit van leven is hier hoog. Mensen die van ver komen, treffen een warme omgeving aan. Met zeven landschapstypes beschikt Fryslân over een rijke grond, een ware rijkdom.

Maar leven we echt in die idylle? Want hoever staan onze deuren eigenlijk open voor anderen?

En hoe gaat het met ons landschap? We zien weidevogels verdwijnen en lezen in de krant over maatschappelijke problemen zoals stijgende armoede, vereenzaming, het stikstofbeleid, het klimaat. Terug naar het volkslied: een claim is het niet. De Friezen blijven bescheiden en houden het slechts bij het ‘bezingen’ van dit ‘beste’ land. Betekent dit misschien dat we ons realiseren dat we nog niet zover zijn, dat het iets is waar we gezamenlijk naar streven? It bêste lân fan d’ierde: we durven er een uitroepteken én een vraagteken achter te plaatsen.

Arcadia ademt dwars door alle lagen van cultureel Fryslân heen. Het is laagdrempelig en grotendeels gratis toegankelijk. Van groots opgezette (openlucht) theaterstukken en exposities tot kleinschalige vertelavonden in de huiskamers van stadswijken en in vele tuinen in het dorp. Intiem, extravagant, inspirerend, beeldend en uitnodigend.

Arcadia is één van de vervolgen op Leeuwarden-Fryslân Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa 2018 (LF2018) en bestaat uit een aantal grote producties en tientallen coproducties met culturele organisaties uit Fryslân, Nederland en Europa. Kunstenaars, inwoners en bezoekers worden uitgenodigd om zich te verhouden tot de vraag: ‘In welke wereld wil jij wonen?’.

Mienskip

Tijdens Arcadia gaan we eropuit, we herontdekken onze omgeving. Wie zijn mijn buren eigenlijk? Wat mis ik in mijn omgeving? En wat kunnen we daar samen aan doen? Samen is het sleutelwoord voor het vormen en onderhouden van de gemeenschap, wat de Friezen mienskip noemen. Maar mienskip betekent veel meer dan de gemeenschap. Mienskip is de onderlinge verbondenheid die zich kenmerkt door een actieve houding ten opzichte van hoe we samen leven. Het ontstaat

The idea of the Arcadia programme stems from a line of the Frisian national anthem: ‘Wy sjonge it bêste lân fan d’ierde’ (‘we sing of the best land on earth’). Whether it’s a choir or a stadium full of football fans singing this anthem, you really feel it. The pride of the Frisians. For their culture, and their land. The best land. It’s true: it’s good to be in the North. The quality of life is high. People who come from far away find a warm atmosphere. With seven types of landscapes, Fryslân has a rich land, true abundance.

But do we really live in that idyll? After all, how far are our doors open to others? And how is our landscape doing? We see meadow birds disappearing and read in the newspaper about social problems, rising poverty, loneliness, nitrogen policy, and the climate. Back to the national anthem: it is not a claim. The Frisians remain modest and stick to only ‘singing of’ this ‘best land’. Does this perhaps mean that we realise that we are not yet there, that it is something that we are all striving for? It bêste lân fan d’ierde: we dare to put both an exclamation mark and a question mark after it.

Arcadia breathes through all layers of cultural Fryslân. It is easily accessible and largely free of charge. From large-scale (open-air) theatre plays and exhibitions to small-scale storytelling evenings in the living rooms of urban districts and in many gardens in villages. Intimate, extravagant, inspiring, evocative, and inviting.

Arcadia is one of the continuations of Leeuwarden-Fryslân European Capital of Culture 2018 (LF2018) and consists of a number of large productions and dozens of co-productions with cultural organisations from Fryslân, the Netherlands and Europe. Artists, residents, and visitors are invited to consider the question: ‘What kind of world do you want to live in?’.

Mienskip

During Arcadia we go out and we discover our environment. Who are my neighbours? What is missing in my surroundings? And what can we do about it together? Together is the key word for shaping and sustaining the community, which the Frisians call mienskip. But mienskip means a lot more than just community. Mienskip is interconnectedness characterised by an active attitude towards how we live together. It arises and grows by seeking cooperation outside one’s own circles. A welcome contrast to the polarised world we live in.

All cultural projects together form a rich variety of perspectives. Combined, these perspectives tell

“Stel no dat wy de tiid omdraaie soene. Alles wat ferline wie is de takomst, wat wêze sil hat west. Hoe sjogge wy dan nei wat wy efterlitte?”

“Stel dat wij de tijd zouden omdraaien. Alles wat verleden is heeft de toekomst, wat nog komt is geweest. Hoe kijken we dan naar wat we achterlaten?”

Alle culturele projecten samen vormen een rijke variëteit aan perspectieven. Gebundeld vertellen deze perspectieven vanuit kunstenaars, jongeren, bewoners, bedrijven, maatschappelijke organisaties en makers uit alle windstreken een gelaagd verhaal. We handelen naar de verhalen waarin we geloven. Zijn dit de verhalen waardoor we de wereld mooier doorgeven dan we haar aantroffen? Of is er een ander verhaal nodig?

Verandering van perspectief

De maatschappij is alles wat we samen zijn. Het is de optelsom van al onze gedragingen. Uit het verleden, heden en hoe we onze toekomst zien en willen inrichten. Soms is verandering van perspectief nodig. Om te ontdekken of wat we doen, misschien beter of anders kan. Door radicale verbeelding ontstaat het gesprek over de vergroening van onze samenleving. Kunstenaars, cultuurmakers en ontwerpers laten ons middels hun werk discussiëren, struikelen, dromen en naar andere perspectieven kijken. Kunst verbeeldt een radicaal andere omgeving en brengt zo het onmogelijk lijkende een grote stap dichterbij.

We zien om ons heen dat systemen vastlopen en dat leidt tot maatschappelijke onrust en onzekerheid. Juist nu hebben we de behoefte aan visie en perspectief. Aan inspiratie voor een eerlijke toekomst voor iedereen, op een gezonde aardbol. Want als we blijven doen wat we deden, dan krijgen we wat we kregen.

Een kunstenaar geeft de bezoeker de vrijheid om anders te denken. Kunst doet ons achter de oren krabben. Laten we eens stilstaan. En laten we kijken naar hoe we de wereld doorgeven aan de volgende generaties. Arcadia creëert de ruimte voor openstaan voor andere perspectieven. Een vakbondsman zei tijdens de Franse studentenprotesten in 1968: ‘Wees realistisch, eis het onmogelijke’. Door het onmogelijke te proberen, brengt kunst een mooiere realiteit dichterbij. Door 1.200 bomen door Leeuwarden te laten wandelen, ontstaat het gesprek over de vergroening van onze omgeving.

Voedingsbodem

Samenwerking tussen verschillende organisaties, sectoren, kennisinstellingen en de overheid vormt de voedingsbodem van Arcadia. Cultuur zetten we in om die verbindingen te versterken en het netwerk a layered story from artists, young people, residents, companies, social organisations, and makers from all corners of the globe. We act on the stories we believe in. Are these the stories that make us leave the world a more beautiful place than we found it? Or is another story needed?

Change of perspective

Society is everything we collectively are. It’s the sum of all our behaviour. From the past, the present, and how we see and want to shape our future. Sometimes a change of perspective is necessary. To find out if what we’re doing could be better or different. Radical imagining creates a conversation about the greening of our society. Through their work, artists, culture makers, and designers allow us to discuss, stumble, dream, and look at other perspectives. Art represents a radically different environment and thus brings the seemingly impossible one big step closer.

We see around us that systems are breaking down, leading to social unrest and uncertainty. Right now, we need vision and perspective. Inspiration for a fair future for everyone, on a healthy globe. Because if we keep doing what we’ve always done, we’ll get the results we’ve always got.

An artist gives the visitor the freedom to think differently. Art makes us scratch our heads. Let’s pause for a moment. And let’s look at how we will pass the world on to the next generations. Arcadia creates the space for being open to other perspectives. During the French student protests in 1968, a trade unionist said: ‘Be realistic, demand the impossible’. By trying the impossible, art brings us closer to a more beautiful reality. By having 1,200 trees walk through Leeuwarden, the conversation arises about the greening of our surroundings.

Breeding ground

Cooperation between various organisations, sectors, knowledge institutions, and the government, is the breeding ground for Arcadia. We use culture to strengthen these connections and expand the network. Together we answer the question: How does Fryslân relate to our shared home, Europe? We have a strong identity, with a clear history and our own story, which we have traditionally expressed through cultural activities. The Frisian identity stems from mienskip, ‘terpencultuur’ (the culture of building artificial hills or ‘terpen’ to live on), and is different from all other regions in the Netherlands.

Dat verhaal versterken we, samen, in de cultuurtriënnale met steun van partners en Provincie.

Wat er gebeurt in arcadia

De ervaringen die bijblijven, zijn veelal intieme ervaringen. In deze 100 dagen ontstaat verbinding. Het zijn de talloze kleine, persoonlijke ervaringen die impact hebben. Het wandelen door Bosk, het zien van onze aarde vanaf de maan, het ervaren van een dans, het luisteren naar de wanhoopskreet van de vogels. Verbinding is wat ons betreft de beste methode om nieuwe perspectieven te omarmen en verandering in gang te zetten.

Hoe zijn we een goede voorouder?

Langetermijndenken is van groot belang. Tijdens het culturele programma krijgt iedereen de mogelijkheid om letterlijk vooruit te kijken naar de volgende generaties. In welke wereld wonen de kinderen van je kleinkinderen?

Together, we will reinforce this story in the cultural triennial with the support of partners and the Province of Fryslân.

What happens in arcadia

The experiences that stay with us are often intimate. In these 100 days, connections are made. It is the countless small, personal experiences that have an impact. Walking through Bosk, seeing our earth from the moon, experiencing a dance, and listening to the desperate cry of the birds. In our opinion, a connection is the best way to embrace new perspectives and initiate change.

How can we be good ancestors? Long-term thinking is very important. During the cultural programme, everyone will have the opportunity to literally look ahead to the next generations. What world do your grandchildren’s children live in?
