THE PATTON MONUMENT On 16th May 1954, a monument in honor of General Patton was solemnly unveiled by Prince Félix of Luxembourg in presence of Captain George S. Patton IV, the son of General Patton, as well as numerous other civilian and military authorities. The memorial was designed by the Luxembourg artists Pierre Droessart and Aurelio Sabbatini. This 16 May 1954 was also the birthday of the very first Remembrance Day. Until 2004, „Remembrance Day“, devoted to the memory of the liberation by the United States Army, was celebrated annually in Ettelbruck. On 28 June 1970 a bronze statue representing General Patton, designed by the American sculptor James Earle Fraser, was unveiled by Grand Duke Jean in presence of Brigadier General George S. Patton IV. Since 1970, a Sherman model M4 A1, the same type of tank used by the armored units under Patton’s command, is displayed as well at the Patton Square. 31
