General John J. PERSHING Diaries; Set 2; 1918
...
From there we went to the Palace. The streets everwhere we went were crowded with people who waved and yelled with an enthusiasm that was very touching.
They had learned to say "Hip, Hip, Hooray", and greeted us lustily with this yel1 from al1 sides.
At the Palace I was taken up first and had a talk with the Grand Duchess and her sister for a few minutes, and then the other officers accompanying me were brought up and presented to her.
I had with me Generals Dickman, Hines, Parker and Preston Brown, and Colonels Boyd, Quakemeyer and Bowditch.
We then went out on the balcony and the 18th Infantry passed in review under the window.
I must say that I was not particularly pleased with the appearance of the 18th. They had a business-like air, but were a little sloppy. It must be said, however, that they had been fighting too much lately to have an opportunity to smarten up.
