Ready your home for the winter chill
Interior maintenance
What to focus on this fall
What could be better than curling up at home, sheltered from the snow and wind on a cold winter day? As fall arrives, take the time to inspect and maintain these key elements inside your home.
WINDOWS AND DOORS
Keep the heat in and the cold out by reapplying caulking, installing plastic window sheeting and replacing damaged weatherstrip. You should also remove window screens to prevent condensation and potential breakage.
DETECTORS
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors by pressing the test button until you hear the alarm. If needed, or if it’s been a while, replace the batteries. While you’re at it, inspect your fire extinguishers to ensure the tamper seal and safety pin are still intact.
HEATING SYSTEM
Check your heating system to ensure it’s working properly before the winter chill sets in. Vacuum your baseboard
heaters or wall-mounted convectors to prevent unpleasant odours. Also, make sure no flammable objects, like curtains or cushions, are within 10 centimetres of them. Con sider scheduling a professional inspection if it’s been a while since your last check.
AIR EXCHANGER
Wash the unit’s filter and air vents. Then, remove them entirely to vacuum and clean out as much dust and debris as possible.
SUMP PUMP
Pour a bucket of water into the tank slowly. If the pump starts immediately, it’s work ing as it should.
AIR CONDITIONER
Clean the filters on your wall-mounted or window air conditioner. Then, either store it away from the elements or protect it with a cover or case.
Once you complete these tasks, you’ll be ready to face winter in a warm, cozy home.
Outdoor maintenance 8 must-do tasks before winter
It’s no secret: northern winters are harsh! If you want your property to make it through the cold season without any issues, you have certain tasks that must be completed this fall. Check out this handy checklist to ensure you don’t miss anything.
1. Close your pool. Drain the water, remove the ladder, clean the filter and install the protective cover. You know the drill!
2. Put away seasonal items. Empty and put away your garden hoses and turn off the outdoor taps. Clean and store your patio furniture and accessories, summer games and toys and the barbecue, or cover them with a sturdy tarp.
3. Maintain your chimney. Minimize the risk of a fire by sweeping your chimney. Also, check the condition of the cap to ensure no unwanted animals make a home in your chimney.
4. Inspect the roof, walls and foundation. Look for damaged shingles, missing gravel, tears in the membrane or cracks, and make any necessary repairs to prevent leaks.
5. Clear gutters and drains. Wait until all the leaves have fallen, then clear out the gutters and drains to prevent overflows and water damage.
6. Install screens on vents. Vents from range hoods and dryers are irresistible entry points for many creatures seek ing warmth. Install new screens or replace damaged ones to keep your home secure.
7. Protect your plants. Shield your shrubs, bring in potted plants, divide perennials, pull up annuals, plant fall bulbs, aerate the soil and trim any hedges. Prune trees as needed to prevent branches from falling on your house in a storm.
8. Clean up the yard. Rake up dead leaves and any debris that could shelter rodents or attract insects. Time to get to work!
Pet care: fall safety
Fall is a beautiful time of year, but as the weather changes, so do the potential risks to your pets. As a responsible pet owner, prioritizing your furry friend’s safety and well-being is essential. Here are some tips to keep your pet safe this fall:
WATCH OUT FOR TOXIC PLANTS
Plants like mums and decorative corn are common in the fall but can be toxic to your pet if they eat them. To keep your pet safe, keep these plants out of reach or avoid them altogether. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet has eaten a toxic plant.
BEWARE OF CHEMICALS
As rodents seek shelter from the cold, the use of rodenticides increases in the fall. Unfortunately, these substances can also be toxic to pets. Additionally, antifreeze, frequently used in the fall, is deadly to pets. Clean up any spills immediately and store these items securely.
STAY SAFE OUTDOORS
As the days get shorter and your walks get darker, ensure your pet is visible outdoors. You can invest in reflective gear, such as collars or leashes, to help drivers see your pet from a distance.
STAY
AWAY FROM HALLOWEEN
CANDY
Halloween candy can be tempting for pets, but it can also be toxic. Chocolate, in partic ular, can harm your pet and cause serious health issues. Keep candy and other treats safely stored away from curious noses, and dispose of any wrappers or other debris that could be ingested.
STAY UP TO DATE ON VACCINATIONS
Fall brings increased exposure to wild animals, which can increase the risk of disease transmission. Ensure your pet’s vaccinations are current to protect against potential diseases. You should also consider flea and tick prevention, as these pests can be more active during fall.
Book an appointment with a veterinarian to ensure your four-legged friend has a safe and enjoyable autumn.

Sustainable tips for celebrating the fall season
Here are some eco-friendly tips to help you welcome fall responsibly:
• Support local farmers’ markets by buying seasonal produce, reducing carbon emissions associated with transportation.
• Decorate your home with natural elements like pinecones, gourds and fallen leaves in stead of plastic or disposable decorations.
• As temperatures drop, conserve energy by sealing drafts, using a programmable thermostat and opting for warm layers instead of cranking up the heat.
• Use reusable bags, containers and utensils when enjoying fall picnics or packing school lunches.
• Before splurging on new fall attire, consider swapping or thrifting clothes. Repair, upcycle or donate items you no longer wear to extend the life of your wardrobe.
• Get creative with leftovers and preserve seasonal fruits and vegetables through canning, freezing or drying.
• Instead of bagging fallen leaves for disposal, compost them to nourish your garden or donate them to local composting facilities.
• Simplify fall festivities by prioritizing meaningful experiences over material possessions. Instead of buying excessive seasonal items, host potluck dinners with friends or go on outdoor adventures.
• Opt for sustainable transportation methods such as biking or public transportation to enjoy fall foliage instead of driving.
• Join local sustainability initiatives or volunteer for fall clean-up events to make a tangible difference in your community’s environmental efforts.

Do you want your home to exude the warmth of the blazing fall leaves? Here are a few tips to welcome nature into your home this autumn.
FOCUS ON TEXTURES
Textured fabrics are a great way to add a touch of fall colour to your decor on a budget. Heavy curtains and plush wool throws have a soothing effect. Moreover, table runners, napkins and cushion covers in varying shades of red, brown, orange and yellow instantly create an inviting atmosphere.
INCORPORATE NATURAL ELEMENTS
Pinecones, gourds, pumpkins, tree leaves and other natural elements are ideal for creating seasonal centrepieces and wreaths.
MAXIMIZE THE LIGHT
more tips:
As the days get shorter, create a cozy atmosphere by installing string lights. These twinkling bulbs can brighten up rooms that desperately lack sunlight and can be used to showcase your banister or mantel. Decorative metallic objects are also great for reflecting natural light and making your space feel more inviting.
Winterizing your barbecue
Unless you have a natural gas barbecue that is connected directly to your home’s fuel supply, the chilly days of late fall signal the end of outdoor cooking. It is also the time to winterize your barbecue properly in order to prolong its life and look.
Of all the different components, the grill is the one that deserves the most attention. Removing all traces of food is essential, especially after you have finished cooking the last meal. This is
above all a question of hygiene. Use some steel wool or a metal brush with soapy water for cast iron grills. More expensive barbecues are often equipped with stainless steel grills which should be cleaned with a cloth, mild soap, and hot water. If you don’t want to go to a lot of trouble, do a self-clean by turning the burners on high and letting all food residues burn off.
The next item to clean is the rubber pipe that connects the valve of the propane tank to the burners. Brushes that have been designed for this job are available at specialized retailers. On the outside of the barbecue, use linseed oil to get rid of any rust on the cover. When all rust is removed, it can be repainted with a heat resistant paint. This retouching not only improves the look of your barbecue, it will also prevent rust from reappearing over the winter while the barbecue is in storage.

4. Soups and broths. Vegetables like squash, onions, leeks and cauliflower are the perfect addition to soups and broths. Make a big batch and defrost it whenever you want.
5. Dried fruits and vegetables. Dried strawberries, apples, tomatoes, carrots and kale have a long shelf life. They can be used in various recipes, including sangrias, salad dressings and sauces.
Get creative when whipping up a healthy and tasty meal.
4 REASONS to treat yourself to a night (or two!) in an enchanting location this FALL
Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself and shake up your routine. Here are four reasons to book a night—or several—at an inn, hotel or bed and breakfast this fall.
1. Discover breathtaking scenery. Summer has its charms, but nothing compares to the beauty of fall landscapes with their rich and vibrant colours. Spend a night in a picturesque village and immerse yourself in the stunning hues and crisp smells of autumn.
2. Save money. As peak tourist season winds down, accommodation prices often drop. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a getaway if you’re on a tight budget.
3. Explore in comfort. Hiking in the forest or exploring attractions when the sun is blistering and the temperature is over 30 C isn’t the most pleasant of experiences. Fall is definitely the most temperate season. Plus, there aren’t nearly as many mosquitoes buzzing around!
4. Participate in events. Find an event that inspires you and stay in the area to enjoy it to the fullest. From music, film and literary festivals to sports competitions and food gatherings, you have plenty of options.
Go out and find local destinations where you can savour the joys of fall in all their splendour. Which colourful region will you choose to relax in this season?
Winterizing a lawn mower
Your faithful friend, the lawnmower: your trusty steed once or twice a week all summer long, keeping your lawn impeccable. After such loyalty, the least you can do is give it TLC before winter.
Late in October, after the lawn has been cut for the last time, remove any remaining gas and store it in a suitable container. Next, empty the tank, feed hoses, and carburetor by letting the engine run until no fuel remains. This step is crucial, as additives in unleaded gas settle during disuse, and sediment can obstruct carburetor jets next spring.
The crankcase oil should be emptied into a container while still warm and liquid. Clean the crankcase with gasoline and refill with new oil up to the recommended level; this prevents condensation and rusting. Oil with a viscosity grading of 20-40 is best for your mower.
If the lawnmower exterior is steel, coat it with non-polluting cooking oil. Grease the wheel axles, sharpen and grease blades, clean or replace the air filter, and clean the spark plug.
A metal mower should also be inspected for rust spots and touched up with suitable paint. The chassis interior may benefit
from an oil coating for protection, while bearings and cables should be lubricated. After thoroughly hosing down the mower, including underneath, store it in a dry place for winter. With this care, it will give you another season of faithful service!

Prepare your vehicle for winter driving
Every October, in honor of Car Care Month, the Car Care Council encourages American car owners to prepare for winter driving by raising awareness about the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and repair. Here’s an overview of the benefits of the Be Car Care Aware campaign.
GET A HEAD START
Industry experts encourage Americans to prepare their vehicles for winter before the temperature drops to ensure small problems are fixed and any lingering wear and tear is resolved.
The Be Car Care Aware program teaches Americans about the importance of pre-winter inspections and maintenance in an effort to keep them safer on the road, avoid collisions and prevent them from being stranded in harsh winter conditions. Plus, efficient brakes, good tires and a fully functional heating system are crucial when driving on winter roads.
BOOK AN INSPECTION
Modern vehicles are equipped with advanced technological systems that essentially make them computers on wheels. It’s not enough to know how to change the oil. Only a professional mechanic has the tools, knowledge and skills to repair and maintain your vehicle’s complex electronic components. This October, book a tune-up at your local garage.
3. Festivals. Explore an array of food and culinary festivals this season. With beer tastings, food trucks and agri-food exhibitors, you can treat your taste buds to various local delights while soaking up the lively atmosphere.
4. Farmers’ markets. Visit local farmers’ markets to stock up on fresh produce bursting with flavour. Use your bounty to create delicious jams, soups and marinades, so you can savour the tastes of fall with your family for months to come.
5. Orchards. Experience the timeless joy of apple picking. Spend a day in the fresh air while fil ling basket after basket with crisp apples. Treat yourself to fresh cider, pies and other sweet treats.
6. Vineyards. What better time than fall to visit a vineyard? Go on a tour, book a tasting or watch live entertainment. Some vineyards even allow you to participate in the harvest. Now that’s an experience to remember! Have a delicious fall!
SIDING ROOFING GUTTERS WINDOWS
There’s never been a better time to upgrade your home to the beauty and convenience of maintenance-free vinyl or steel siding, vinyl windows, gutters & various types of roofing.
Fall gardening: best bulbs to plant
With the arrival of fall, gardeners should start preparing their yards for winter and spring. For most, an important task is to plant their spring-blooming bulbs. Here are some of the hardiest types.
• Crocuses. This will be one of the first to bloom in your spring garden. Choose from a variety of species in different colours and sizes, and plant them in a spot that gets partial or full sun.
• Daffodils. These spring flowers will grow back year after year with little help from you. Plant them in partial shade or full sun for best growing results.
• Alliums. This ornamental variety of the onion family produces big purple balls of blooms. They love the sun and will return every spring.
• Tulips. These blooms come in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes. They do best when planted in areas with partial shade or full sun. They’re perennials, so you won’t need to plant new bulbs every year.
To ensure they take, bulbs should be planted before the ground freezes but only after the weather is reliably cool. For a spring garden that’s continuously in bloom, be sure to plant bulbs that flower at different times during the season.
