Think Pink Live Green Cancer has touched all our lives in one way or another. When the diagnosis comes in, time stands still as a rush of emotions takes over in that moment and everyone realizes life has changed.

We all know someone who has experienced this and begins the fight for their life.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month!

Breast Cancer remains one of the most common cancers for women and is projected to double globally by 2040. We all need to be aware, make changes to reduce the risk, get involved to support those who are diagnosed, and help find a cure! Studies have shown a direct connection between “living green� and lowering your risk for cancer. Check out the Think Pink, Live Green campaign at breastcancer.org for more information and tips.

TRICK OR TREAT PLEASE FOLLOW JBLM, CITY AND STATE GUILDELINES FOR TRICK OR TREATING DURING COVID 19

Halloween is an exciting time of year for children. Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) would like to take the opportunity to help you make it as safe as possible. Trick-or-treating will take place in JBLM housing areas October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Parents are asked to accompany their young children during trick-ortreating and to use caution when crossing roadways. If you are driving, please be extremely careful on the roadways, especially in housing areas and where children are present.

Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering. A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats.

•

Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won’t catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source.

•

Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists. For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car’s headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights or glow sticks. Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. Children should wear well fitting, sturdy shoes. Mother’s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking. Hats and scarves should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children’s eyes. Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loosely fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision.

Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers. To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over.

Wet leaves should be swept from sidewalks and steps. Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome. Barracks are not authorized. Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult. People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jack-o’lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame.

*** Not all resident homes participate in Trick Or Treat, yet choose to leave their porch light on for safety and visibility purposes. Please visit your District Office for a Trick Or Treaters Welcome door sign. Please hang the sign on your door to let resident children know if your home is handing out treats or not participating in the festivities. Thank you. *** 4

Seasonal Reminders Changing batteries in smoke

All of the homes in Lewis-McChord Communities are equipped with smoke detectors. You will find detectors on every floor of the home and in bedrooms. Some smoke detectors will be battery operated only and some are hard wired directly into the home with a battery back up. You are responsible for maintaining the smoke detectors in good working order. Please test your detectors regularly and change batteries when it is needed. If you are ever concerned or would like to have your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors checked, just simply call in a work order. ** TIP: A good way to remember your detector batteries is to change then every time you set your clock forward or backward in conjunction with Daylight Savings time and Standard time. Upcoming Daylight Savings End Date is November 4th (set your clocks back one hour).

When leaving your home for an extended period of time (more than two (2) weeks), a Vacation and Extended Absence Form must be completed and given to your District Office. This form can be picked up at any of our District Offices.

Before you leave your home, we strongly recommend that you: 1. Stop mail and newspaper delivery.

2. Leave pets with friends or at a kennel (pets are not allowed to stay in your home during your absence.

ANIMAL CONTROL WILL TAKE PETS LEFT IN HOME DURING YOUR ABSENCE. 3. Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as a TV, coffee maker, or computers.

4. Lock and secure all doors and windows.

5. Turn off water supply line to washing machine.

During winter months: Please call our Customer Service line at 253.912.3500 for special “cold weather” instructions to prevent frozen / broken pipes.

Holiday Decorations

Pet Responsibilities

Halloween Decorations must be removed by Nov 10th.

Halloween decorations consist of Jack O’ Lanterns (carved pumpkins), skeletons, ghosts, spiders and spider webs, spooky decor, witches, scary cats and all related inflatable characters. Please be aware, we may ask that you remove gruesome and overly scary decorations. There may be Service Members recovering from PTSD in your community. Please keep Halloween fun and safe for the entire community.

Pet droppings are odorous, unsightly, and a nuisance. More importantly, they can be a health hazard, especially for children. Therefore, pets must be kept under control so they do not defecate on parade fields, playgrounds, troop formation areas, sidewalks/walkways, common areas, miniature playgrounds of the housing areas, and neighbors' yards. You will immediately clean up droppings when your pet defecates outside of your residence yard.

Fall seasonal decorations must be removed by Dec 10th. Seasonal decorations (Fall) consist of leaves, scarecrows, gourds, whole un-carved pumpkins, natural wreaths, hay bales, corn stalks, etc.

Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet's waste, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area. A pet owner who does not properly dispose of his/her pet's waste will be subject to a fine of $25 for each offense plus $5 per day that the violation persists.

Please note, immediate removal may be required of any decorations, alterations, additional or fixtures which are made or installed without Agent’s prior written consent, The premises will then be restored or repaired solely at the cost of the resident.

With the fall season comes heavy rain, wind and chilly weather. If you have a pet that spends time in the fenced yard, make sure you are taking the best care possible of your four legged family member.

Remember if its too cold for you, its too cold for your pet. Be kind, bring them inside.

Conserving energy at home on JBLM By: Tammy Shoop

October is energy month, time to start thinking about conserving energy. We live in a challenging time to save energy, especially when many of us are working from home, or going to school from home, or both!

At home, just like at work, we can establish an energy monitoring program to help track and conserve energy usage. Appoint one of your children to be an energy conservation monitor, trading off each week. They can track your home energy use on a chart. Teaching children while they are young will help them (and you!) to conserve one of our most valuable commodities-energy.

Where to start? Here’s a few tips: • Close your windows when the heat or air conditioning is running.

• Use fans instead of air conditioners, and turn the lights off in unoccupied rooms.

• Be aware of ‘Vampire Energy’: electronics such as game systems, laptops, computers, printers, and monitors can use power even when we’re not using them. Check to see if there’s a power-saving feature to set on your electronics.

• Plug your home electronics into power strips, and then turn the power strips off at night, and when you’re away from home.

• If you can, use the Energy Star electronics, and appliances.

• Remember to check with Lewis-McChord Communities to change filters on your furnaces, and use LED light bulbs.

Need to recycle your lightbulbs? If you are a JBLM resident take them, along with your household hazardous waste, to Environmental Services, Bldg. 1210 during M-Th. 1300-1600 and Fri. 1300-1500.

Lincoln Military Housing is committed to enriching the lives of military families through providing quality homes and vibrant communities. Your feedback is an important piece in helping us accomplish this goal, and we want to ensure we provide you with an avenue to initially address your needed repair, suggestion or concern and the process to escalate it, should that be necessary. Below is an outline of our easy Three- Step process for concerns and opportunities to provide feedback.

To Our Military Families and Valued Residents, At Lincoln Military Housing, it remains our mission to provide exemplary service.

With that in mind, we are always looking for ways we can improve and make our resident’s experience and our communities better.

After a recent review of our maintenance process, we discovered that we are unable to complete many of our resident initiated maintenance requests promptly because our team members are being denied Permission to Enter (PTE) the home to complete the work. To ensure our resident’s needs are being addressed as well as performing necessary maintenance, we have modified our current process.

Effective immediately, when a resident enters a routine maintenance request via the LMH Resident App or LMH Maintenance Portal, the system will default to yes. Residents will have the ability to change to “No”.

If Resident Selects Permission to Enter - “Yes”: • If a resident gives us Permission to Enter, our goal is that the service technician will respond to the home before the end of the next business day. The district office will follow up with the resident if they are unable to respond within this timeline.

• Please ensure that all rooms that the maintenance technician(s) need access to are unlocked, including screen doors. If rooms are locked, we will not be able to complete the service request and will need to reschedule.

• Please ensure that all pets are to be secured during the maintenance visit.

• An adult must be present alongside anyone under the age of 18 during the maintenance visit.

COVID-19 screening questions remain in place for the safety of our residents, team members, and vendors.

Technicians will only visit a home when the resident has responded “no” to all COVID-19 screening questions.

Any “yes” responses, however, may affect our response time.

If Resident Selects Permission to Enter - “No”: • If the Permission to Enter is set to “No” and the resident states that someone will be home, our goal is to respond to the home before the end of the next business day. If the resident is not home when we arrive, we will leave a door hanger advising the resident to contact the district office to set up an appointment.

• If the resident requests an appointment, someone will contact the resident before the end of the next business day to set up an appointment.

Regardless if the Permission to Enter is granted or denied, our goal remains the same to have our service technicians respond to the maintenance request before the end of the next business day. Please remember for all maintenance team members to enter the home to respond to a ticket: • All pets are to be secured during the maintenance visit.

• An adult must be present alongside anyone under the age of 18 during the maintenance visit.

• Please ensure the rooms that the service technicians need access to are unlocked as well as front screen doors.

• COVID-19 screening questions remain in place for the safety of our residents, team members, and vendors. Technicians will only visit a home when the resident has responded “no” to all COVID-19 screening questions. Any “yes” responses, however, may affect our response time.
